The specific objective of this three year study is to investigate the means of reestablishing non-polluted hydrologic systems in areas where surface mining directly impacts shallow ground-water resources. The research area chosen for the study is located near Colstrip, Montana it a new mine site where chemical analysis of core samples from the overburden suggested that excessive concentrations of several elements would he encountered during the mining process. This report discusses local vegetation; soils; and regional geology, and hydrology. Stratigraphic cross sections and regression analyses were used to study the litho-chemical relationships in the overburden. Cross sections indicated Inimical material may be related to both rock tune and position within the overburden profile. In overburden zoness where clay content was high, there was a greater probability that Pb, Cu, Ni, and Mn concentrations would also be higher than average; similarly, the likelihood of overburden exceeding a suspect level became less as the sand content increased. Highest value, of conductance were usually found within a few meters of the surface. High concentrations of clay, nickel, and zinc were frequently found directly above and below the Rosebud coal. Regression analysis indicated overburden SAR was predictable with only a Na analysis. A strong relationship also existed in the overburden between conductance, Ca, and Mg.

This paper briefly describes the principal commercial and near-commercial deposits of gold-bearing gravel and the important placer-mining operations in Lemhi County, Idaho. It is on of a series on western mining districts being published by the Bureau of Mines. This paper is based on a field survey of the placer-mining districts of Lemhi County in the summer of 1938. Available information concerning gold-bearing gravels was obtained from prospectors and claim owners; operators supplied the data on mining operations. No attempt was made actually to test the gravels. The principal object of the examination was to indicate placer areas worthy of further investigation by prospective operators.

The compressibility factors, Z, of helium, nitrogen, and helium-nitrogen mixtures in the three-dimensional space of temperature, pressure, and gas composition have been related to the Leiden form of the virial equation of state. The dependency of virial coefficients through the fifth on temperature and gas composition has been established for the temperature range 133.15° to 748.15° K. Compressibility factors, Z, have been computed from the equation of state and tabulated as functions of gas composition, pressure, and temperature. Tabular values of Z are presented for 30.00 through 100.00 percent helium for temperatures from 240° through 700° R for pressures from 14.696 through 3,050 psia and for temperatures from 720° through 1,300° R for pressures from 14.696 through 1,500 psia. Tabular values of Z are presented at increments of 5.00 percent helium and 20° R, and, for pressures greater than 50 psia, at increments of 50 psi.

"Cyclic polarization technique and also potentiodynamic measurements were applied to study corrosion behavior of 13% chromium steels in chloride containing environment. Potentiodynamic measurements were performed at 25 and 75 °C with 0, 10 and 20 g/l NaCl in 0.01 M hydrochloric acid solution. At the same time, the significant pitting parameters such as corrosion potential (Ecorr), pitting potential (Epit), protection potential (Epro) and passive current (Ipass) of cyclic polarization curves with various NaCl concentration were analyzed and compared to describe the corrosion behavior of 13% chromium stainless steel. Surface measurement techniques such as SEM and EDS were used for morphology and analysis of corrosion products. The results showed that both temperature and Cl- concentration had significant effects on corrosion behavior of 13% chromium stainless steel in acidic solution.INTRODUCTION Of all the corrosion resistant alloys (CRA) used in oil and gas developments, martensitic stainless steels (MSS) are some of the most common ones these days. These steels not only have the advantages of normal steels: high strength, cost-effective, easy to manufacture, available in a wide variety of product forms, but they also have good CO2 corrosion resistance at higher temperatures as a result of their 11% minimum chromium content. One of the most common types of MSS used in the oil and gas industry is 13% chromium steel. NACE and API standards both reference several different varieties of 13% chromium steels for use in oil and gas projects(“Corrosion Resistant High Cr Steel for Oil and Gas Wells,” 2013). All types of 13% chromium steels have about 12 to 14% chromium and other minor alloying additions, and can be placed into two general groups: conventional and modified. Conventional 13% Cr steels (13Cr) are those most common in oil and gas, some of which are CA6NM (UNS J91150), AISI 410(UNS S41000), and AISI 420 (UNS S42000). These alloys have excellent corrosion resistance when compared to carbon steels up to about 300°F (150°C) and are used for a variety of wellhead, tubular, and downhole components however they have very limited resistance to cracking in H2S (Vallourec Group, 2015). Modified 13% Cr (M13Cr) steels came from the need for increased corrosion resistance at higher temperatures, increased H2S cracking resistance, and increased yield strength above 85 ksi (586 Mpa) primarily for tubular goods and other downhole equipment. These features were developed by taking a conventional 13Cr steel and adding nickel (Ni), molybdenum (Mo), copper (Cu), and other alloying elements. M13Cr provides better corrosion resistance than 13Cr up to about 350°F (177°C), yield strengths up to 110 ksi (758 Mpa), and also improved H2S cracking resistance(“Corrosion Resistant High Cr Steel for Oil and Gas Wells,” 2013)."

"This paper offers a case history of piled raft foundation in soft ground supporting a twelve-story building in Tokyo. To increase bearing capacity of the soft soil as well as a countermeasure of liquefaction, grid-form deep cement mixing walls (DMWs) were employed with the piled raft. Based on the long-term monitoring results, the ratio of the load carried by the DMWs to the effective structure load after the construction of the raft was estimated to be 0.3 while that carried by the piles was 0.7. In order to clarify the contribution of the DMWs to bearing the structure load, numerical simulation of the settlement and the load sharing among the piles, the DMWs and the unstabilized soil was performed using a three-dimensional finite element model. The results of the numerical simulation agreed well with the measured values, when the Young’s modulus of the DMWs obtained from the unconfined compressive tests was adopted and the shear modulus of the soft soil was reduced to 50% of that at small strains.INTRODUCTIONIn recent years, piled raft foundations have been used in many countries as building foundations. The effectiveness of piled rafts in reducing average and differential settlements has been confirmed not only on favorable ground conditions as shown by Katzenbach et al. (2000), Poulos (2001) and Mandolini et al. (2005), but also on unfavorable ground conditions such as soft clay and/or liquefiable sand using ground improvement technique (Yamashita et al., 2011a; Yamashita et al., 2011b; Yamashita et al. 2013). Grid type ground improvement using the Deep Mixing Method has been applied to sandy ground as a countermeasure of liquefaction to increase liquefaction resistance of unstabilized soil left in the grid walls where its shear deformation during seismic motion is reduced by the confinement effect of the grid walls (Kitazume, 2013). The high applicability of the method was demonstrated in the 1995 Hyogoken-Nambu earthquake and the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake (Tokimatsu et al., 1996; Uchida et al., 2012a; Uchida et al., 2012b).This paper offers a case history of piled raft foundation in soft ground supporting a twelve-story building in Tokyo. Federal and state regulations, in an effort to reduce acid rain, are becoming increasing more stringent regarding sulfur content of fossil fuels. Whereas coal from Illinois and Ohio contains between 1.5 and 37. sulfur, Wyoming has billions of tons of coal reserves containing less than O.5/% sulfur. However, much of Wyoming's coal is high in moisture, 25-30%, and low in energy, 8,200 to 8,900 BTU, vs. 10,500+ BTU for Illinois and Ohio Basin coals. Wyoming currently ships in excess of 130 million tons of coal to utilities as distant as Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas. With freight charges ranging from $12.00-$20.00/ton, more than $1.5 billion a year is spent to transport water. A test shipment of more than 50,000 tons of Wyoming coal has recently been made from Mobil's Cabello Rojo Mine, south of Gillette, by Burlington Northern to the Robert's Bank British Columbia coal terminal for transloading and shipment to Taiwan Power Company. This coal assayed approximately 8,400 BTU/lb. and 277. moisture. Carbontec Energy Corporation feels the future availability of dried coal containing 11,000+ BTU could substantially enhance the potential export as well as the domestic market for Wyoming coal. Large and small utilities, along with industrial furnaces require tens of millions of tons of Wyoming, West Virginia, and other Eastern The federal government is encouraging the expenditure of hundreds of million of dollars by utilities to retrofit their boilers to allow them to burn higher sulfur coal. This program, if carried to completion, would cost many tens of billions of dollars, with the net result being high power costs sustained by the utilities. These costs will be passed on and paid for by the American consumer. A sensible alternative would be the burning of low sulfur coal by the utilities, without costly capital and operating expenditures. Carbontec Energy feels the successful operation of a Carbondry Coal Drying Plant in Wyoming will be the forerunner to other similar and larger operations in the State. CARBONTEC RESEARCH The activities of Carbontec's personnel to develop a viable process to dry sub-bituminous and lignite coal goes back some 14 years; in fact, for some of us it goes back to 1962 when we were involved in a program under which lignite coal from Truax Trayer's Velva mine was placed in low sulfur coal, which are burned alone or blended with high sulfur, Midwestern coal. Carbontec believes that a high BTU. reasonably priced, shippable coal fuel produced in Wyoming and delivered at costs competitive with Eastern low sulfur coal, could offer substantial benefits to Wyoming coal producers, utility customers, and to the State of Wyoming.

Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine is located in Papua, Indonesia operated by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) with approximately 1,500m below surface. The ore body extend 1230m width from northwest to southeast by 300–400m length east-west. The mine currently produces at full production of 80,000 tons per day until 2041. Part of the extension of current active production block and mitigation sits 225 m above the production block 1 (PB1) and 2 (PB2A and PB2B) which located in 2590L, named production block#4 (PB4W and PB4E). As the mining continues at PB1N, PB2A, and PB2B, the cave growth vertically and laterally to south perimeter of the footprint affecting the integrity of PB4W/E footprint. Currently, PB1N and PB2N are in active production whilst PB4E development continues from South against PB1N cave, as can be seen in Figure 1. A slight overlapping between PB1E and PB4E intentionally to promote cave connections between the two caves. Despite low stress model in the PB4E near existing caves, the PB4E cave propagation expected by the large strain and will be propagating in tension failure to the PB1E cave. Hence, designing the drill drives edge and first drawbell location as close as possible to the PB1E cave is necessary to guarantee cave connection. Since PB4 footprint development commenced in December 2021, there have been a substantial cave propagation observed from existing downhole monitoring. As the PB4 footprint designed perpendicular to existing DMLZ PB1 cave, adjustment of the development edge design is necessary to reflect the progression the loosening zone propagation to the South. Final life of mine design for extraction, undercut and ventilation level were decided in October 2023 considering latest update cave (fractured/ yielded) boundary. Numerical model of potential rock mass damage also aids the decision to locate the drift edge design. Predicting the cave progression impact is critical to both production at the existing active blocks and development of the new area. The use of cave shape data from year 2021–2023 gives an insight of the cave shape estimation at the end of 2024 when the undercut drift will be developed. This paper presents actual cave growth of active production blocks and its relative vertical progression impact as the result of drawing in order to plan for acceptable rate and provide mitigation once the minimum acceptable rock mass condition and minimum pillar threshold achieved.

"Processing of ferrites has gained tremendous importance in recent times to meet the high performance demands on ferrites in keeping with the fast emerging· technologies. The quality of ferrite powders has strong influence on ·the performance of final device. Fabrication· of high performing ferrite components requires starting ferrite powders of precise stoichiometry, purity and microstructure. It is difficult to obtain these attributes by the conventional ceramic method. The key to obtaining quality powders lies in the· solution techniques. With this in view soft ferrites have been prepared by a wet chemical process, known as the citrate precursor method, which involves the formation of citrate complexes of the constituent cations. The advantages of this process are the ease of preparation and close control of composition, homogeneity, purity and particle size. Electrical and magnetic measurements on lithium ferrites have shown resistivity higher by more than two orders of magnitude compared to that observed for samples prepared by the conventional ceramic method, and low magnetic losses, making the ferrites specially suitable for high frequency applications.IntroductionProperties of ferrites are known to be sensitive to .their processing technique. A small deviation in the compositional stoichiometry of the ferrite affects its properties greatly. Soft ferrites such as Ni-Zn, Mn-Zn and Mg-Mn. are well known ferrites covering wide-ranging applications [1,2]. Lithiiim ferrites have also assumed technological importance for microwave applications and are potential substitutes for the expensive garnets [3]. Lithium ferrites are often doped with zinc to tailor the saturation magnetization required at high frequencies. Lithium and lithium-zinc ferrites, however, present difficulty to processing due to the volatile nature of both the cation components, namely Li and Zn. These ions are volatile at temperatures > 1000°C which makes their processing difficult. One of the main considerations of high frequency performance of ferrites is the high eddy current losses which prevent the interaction of the magnetic field with the ferrite component and hence impair device performance. These losses can be reduced by having a material of high resistivity. Electrical conductivity in lithium ferrite has been attributed to electron hopping [4] between the two vaience states of iron, Fe2+ <=> Fe3+, on octahedral sites. Maintaining the + 3 valence state of otahedral- Fe ions is thus a prerequisite for achieving high resistivity. The resistivity of ferrites is normally found to be low when processed by the conventional solid-state or the ceramic method [5]. This is attributed to (a) extensive ball-milling employed in the method to mix the component oxides results in non-stoichiometric compositions due to introduction of additional Fe ions on abrasion of steel balls during milling, (b) high processing temperatures involved which result in significant volatilization of Li and Zn ions creating thereby oxygen non-stoichiometry which results in reduction of Fe3 + to Fe2 +, (c) large and non-uniform grain sizes. In the present work, preparation of Li and Li-Zn ferrites by a non-conventional method known as a citrate precursor method [6, 7] which requires lower processing temperatures and duration is reported. The method gives stoichiometric compositions on account of homogeneous atomic-scale mixing of the constituent cations via the formation of metal-citrate complexes mixed in solution state. The method is also capable of giving small grain size which aids the oxidation ofFe2+ ions."

The origin of the titanium pigment and metal? industries began with the discovery of the element titanium in 1791 by an Anglican clergyman named William Gregor. The titanium was discovered in magnetic black sands found in the beaches near Cornwall. England. The name titanium was established by the German chemist who discovered the mineral rutile in Hungary. Rutile is the oxide of the element titanium, which he called titan alluding to the mythological titans, giants of ancient Greece. The commercialization of titanium minerals began probably in 1916 with the production of titanium tetrachloride which was to be used in tracer bullets, flares and smoke screens during World War 1. In the 1920&apos;s composite pigments based on TiO2 barium sulfate and calcium sulfate were produced, followed by the introduction of the sulfate process anatase TiO2 crystal in the 1930s. The U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1938 began investigating titanium metal technology and promoted the development of the Kroll process. which is the magnesium metal reduction of titanium tetrachloride to produce titanium metal sponge.

"Ed Rapp is among those who believe in the saying that necessity is the mother of all invention. Rapp is the president of Caterpillar’s mining group. As such, he is tasked with leading the world’s largest mining equipment maker, and its customers, through this time of lower commodity prices, while also positioning his company to be prepared for better days that lie ahead.The decade-long mining boom fueled by growth in emerging markets and demand for commodities that led to record prices for some metals paused in 2008 with the global financial crisis. However, according to Rapp, thanks to stimulus packages around the world, and in particular the stimulus from China that was focused on infrastructure, the mining sector recovered fairly quickly, and from 2010 to 2012, mining was strong.And then the stimulus stopped. Credit dried up and global growth began to slow down and, in the three years since, commodity prices have declined by an average of 60 percent. Caterpillar expanded during the boom, acquiring Bucyrus, and investing billions into the mining sector. It has felt the pinch of the slowdown as much as any mining company in the world. These pages, and those of other mining publications as well as mainstream media, have been filled with stories of doom and gloom about the industry. But Rapp, while acknowledging that the difficult times have been painful, also said Caterpillar sees opportunity in the slow down and reaffirmed his company’s commitment to the mining industry as absolute."

Infrared materials are a special kind of material widely used in military, biological engineering and chemical industry. However, the problems associated with them such as unstable properties, high cost and a high thermal expansion coefficient seriously restrict the development and the wide application of the traditional infrared materials with the SiC or ZrSiO4 matrix. The ultrafine quartz powder is normally used to prepare the infrared materials by hot-pressing technology. The aim of the paper is to investigate the thermal expansivity, the effect of the SiO2 size and the addition of Al2O3 or Fe2O3 on the infrared emissivity of the quartz matrix of the infrared material (QMIM) in a 8-25um wavelength range. The results indicate that 89% of infrared emissivity and 0.4x 10-5/°C of thermal expansion coefficient of QMIM can be obtained. The affecting mechanism of A1203 and Fe2O3 on the infrared emissivity of QMIM were also discussed.

The current Queensland Government’s rehabilitation guidelines for post-mining landforms present a hierarchy of preferred outcomes for different areas within the mine site (see Figure 1). Within all areas, restoration of a ‘natural’ ecosystem is clearly prioritised as the preferred end land use, although it is not a mandatory practice. Beyond the official guidelines, there is also an implied preference for renaturalisation echoed in most environmental impact assessments and closure plans (Lamb, Erskine and Fletcher, 2015). In practice, however, ecosystem restoration does not extend to construction of a realistic topographic form, largely rejecting the ‘natural’ aesthetic implied by ecosystem restoration in favour of adopting a functional aesthetic in deference to standard engineering criteria.This presentation argues that the established disconnection between actual and implied landform aesthetics is indicative of a wider problem around end landform planning. It contends that such disconnects are the result of the impact of competing ‘ways of seeing’ (Bradley and Kearney, 2007) the same landscape, and reflect the struggle between, and inclusion of, these differing perspectives within the planning process itself. We propose that recognition of the complexity of landscape perceptions is key to improving post-mining landscape outcomes, and the misalignment between land use values and landscape aesthetics can be addressed by establishing an overarching framework for landscape preferences. As such, we outline the reality of stakeholder landscape preferences, and present a critical response to current planning practices within the life-of-mine (LOM).CITATION:Hine, A and Erskine, P, 2016. An accepted statement of fact is that transportation next to agriculture is the second most important industry in the world. The transportation networks of the United States contributed immensely to the growth and prosperity of our nation. My objective is to make each and everyone here aware of the need for communication between geologists, mining engineers, purchasing agents and transportation managers. Only through a cooperative effort is it possible to reap the benefits of transportation in the industrial minerals field. Transportation is often thought of in terms of trucks, rail cars, barges, covered wagons or whatever. If this is your only exposure to the transportation industry then you probably spent most of your life in a cave.

The origin of the written blasting log or shot report can likely be traced back to the earliest annals of blasting and record keeping. These records were, for the most part, a way of checking inventory, production progress, or billing, and not necessarily designed with the intention of being used as a legal document in a court of law. As our litigious society has evolved to include far reaching regulatory requirements, however, the blasting log has developed to support and aid in the defense of the common blaster from blasting lawsuits by providing a comprehensive written report of his or her actions.

The following processes were investigated using ultrasonic treatment in mineral recovery: (1) cleaning coal from coal slurry ponds, and (2) extracting precious metals from tailings and other sources. The treatment entails the production of a water slurry of the material containing the mineral which is made to flow over the vibrating surface of the ultrasonic treatment unit. The vibrations transmitted into the slurry break up particle agglomerates and also produce a scrubbing action on the surfaces of the particles. The treated mineral particles were found to have increased settling rates, better compaction, and more rapid water drainage.

Modem civilization is indebted to that most ancient of the skilled crafts - the art of stone working, as the one consistent means whereby the dim un-recorded past has conveyed to our modem schools of science volumns of facts, written in characters of imperishable stone. Although left, centuries ago, to ruin and decay, architectural examples of the ancient building crafts still remain to the glory of the old master-builders, whose accomplishments in that remote age continue to influence and inspire their modem successors. Present-day architects and builders will leave to posterity just as faithful a record of our modes of living and of the methods now adopted for protection, as if it had been made by written word; and our craftsmen have profited greatly, in meeting modem requirements, by taking advantage of the indurance and utility of stone. Stone in all ages and stages of the world&apos;s civilization and development has been the material chosen by the masterbuilder, the one material possessing qualities that render it most desirable in affecting the artistic ideals of each period. It perfects the science of architecture through its durability and thus renders possible the study of man&apos;s workmanship in stone throughout periods of civilization of which we have no specific written account. Other materials have been used for the construction of man&apos;s habitations, but none have withstood the test of time, nor have established the credit of designer and builder so well as stone. _All other materials fall into ruin and decay, leaving neither mark nor monument for the enlightenment of mankind.

Investigations of the sinkhole indicated that the loose, disturbed ground was completely encircled by dense competent core. This confinement substantially increased the effectiveness of the compaction grouting compared to what might have been expected at a "greenfield" site. However, the 8 ft diameter circle shown in the plan view was only the surface expression of the sinkhole proper and the deep, loosened ground actually extended to a larger diameter of about 20 ft. The planned spacing of the grout holes was based on the finite element simulations using a target void ratio of less than 0.3 throughout the compacted ground within a 5 ft radius of the grout injection point. Because of the strong confinement effect, the layout of grout holes included one central primary hole surrounded by six secondary holes at a triangular spacing of about 5 ft. Since the disturbed ground was considered a confined cylinder, it was anticipated that the primary hole would perform the majority of work and the secondary holes would act as check holes, with progressively lesser grout takes as the loose ground densified.
