In this paper, ductile iron material with different content of niobium was prepared by a scientific melting method. Image Analysis Software was used to studied the effect of niobium microalloying on both pearlite content and pearlite lamellar spacing in ductile iron quantitatively. The results showed that the addition of a small amount of niobium could increase the pearlite content and decrease pearlite lamellar spacing of ductile iron effectively.

This paper describes the successful mechanized extraction of coal pillars in 11 panels using the fish-tail method from 2010 to 2017 at Pinoura Mine in India. This method proved its potential of coal recovery with efficient strata control under weak roof due to faster rate of extraction in a single lift. Observations of strata and snook behavior during the field studies in different panels of the mine are included.

Bioleaching has an increasingly important place among available mining technologies as biological processes have emerged as alternatives for metal recovery, especially for metals like gold and copper. An important disadvantage of bioleaching is the slow reaction rates, with microbial attack times often lasting weeks. Therefore, applicable research is required to improve these rates. From previous research, copper bioleaching has been divided into two specific regimes: (1) surface reaction controlling step and (2) mix of surface reaction and diffusion controlling steps. The presented model, which includes the effects of both these regimes, predicted the results of copper bioleaching recovery with good accuracy.

The challenge of managing geological uncertainty in mine planning is central to optimizing resource extraction while minimizing risks and costs. This paper introduces a novel approach to coal mine planning by integrating chance-constrained programming to address the uncertainty inherent in mining operations. The main takeaway from this work is the demonstration that focusing on reducing the variance of high-quality coal blocks, rather than low-quality ones, can lead to better blending outcomes, higher profitability and more efficient resource utilization. The study presents a case study of a coal mining operation, using chance-constrained programming to manage the uncertainty surrounding coal property predictions, specifically the predicted coke strength after reaction (CSR).

"Many earthquakes take place every year in Japan, in which the 1995 Hyogoken-Nambu earthquake and the 2011 Tohoku earthquake induced both a humanitarian crisis and massive economic impacts. As liquefaction which occur in a loose and saturated sand layer, induces quite large damages of infrastructures, the importance of liquefaction mitigation has been emphasized to minimize earthquake disasters for many years. Many kinds of ground improvement techniques based on various improvement principles have been developed for earthquake disaster mitigation. Among them, the grid type deep mixing method has been often applied to liquefaction mitigation. In the method, the stiff grid walls are constructed by mixing the soil and binder in-situ, which are expected to restrict the shear deformation of the soil within the grid walls so that the pore water pressure generation can be remained small. The high applicability of the method was confirmed in several earthquakes, including the 1995 Hyogoken-Nambu earthquake and the 2011 Tohoku earthquake. In this paper, the development of the method, some applications of the deep mixing method to earthquake disaster mitigation are briefly introduced. INTRODUCTION In Japan, many earthquakes take place every year in Japan, in which the 1995 Hyogoken-Nambu earthquake and the 2011 Tohoku earthquake induced both a humanitarian crisis and massive economic impacts. As liquefaction induces quite large damages, the importance of liquefaction mitigation has been emphasized to minimize earthquake disasters for many years. Table 1 shows the amount of damage to port facilities (Noda, 1991). According to the table, the amount of damage when liquefaction takes place is about 20 to 50 times larger than that without liquefaction. This highlights the importance of liquefaction mitigation to minimize earthquake disasters. There are many kinds of soil stabilization techniques developed for liquefaction in Japan. Among them, the deep mixing method (DMM), an in-situ cement stabilization techniques, was developed in 1970s in Japan and has frequently been applied to improvements of clayey and sandy soils (Kitazume and Terashi, 2013). The grid type DMM has been often applied to prevent liquefaction, where the grid of stabilized column walls function to restrict generation of excess pore pressure in the soil within the walls by confining the soil particle movement. The improvement effect of the method was first evaluated in the Hyogoken-Nambu earthquake in 1995 and was also evaluated in the Tohoku earthquake in 2011. In this paper, some successful performance of the deep mixing method to earthquake disaster mitigation in the two earthquakes are briefly introduced."

Recent antipollution legislation for the control of mine tailings and waste-water has required an increasing number of tailings ponds. Many of these new waste-retention ponds are being constructed in congested locations, or the older ponds have reached such a size that--if failure occurs--they pose a threat to human life and public property. Although the typical tailings-disposal embankment represents--to the casual-, observer or the economy-minded mine official--a rather ugly but benign and stable pile of waste, they are in fact an extremely sensitive structural mass, retained behind the frailest of dikes. Failure of the waste mass requires only a minor change in water retention or weather conditions, erosion or piping of the ground strata, shifts in load or slight earth tremors. When failures occur, the results can be disastrous. In the U.S., we have been fortunate that, so far, pond failures have not caused loss of life. Thus, failures in this country have attracted little public attention. Present tailings-pond construction methods used by the mining industry require the barest money investment, and little engineering effort. Unfortunately, this superficial approach may increase short-term profits, but the practice may be conducive to the construction of needlessly weak structures. In coming years many of these designs will probaly become corporate liabilities. A typical pond is portrayed in Figure IA. This particular pond in Arizona is 1 mile long and 3/4 mile wide. Illustrated in Figure lB is a representative pond in cross section. "An experimental program was undertaken to investigate the effects of randomly distributed basalt fibre on the index and engineering properties of Dhanori clay and to compare its performance with the properties of soil reinforced with polypropylene fibre. In the present investigation, 7 groups of soil samples were prepared at four different percentages of basalt fibre and polypropylene fibre content and tests were done for measuring their consistency limits, compaction characteristics, unconfined compression strength and consolidation properties. The test results indicate that the inclusion of basalt fibre in Dhanori clay resulted in significant improvement in properties. The improved properties are not comparable with polypropylene fibres, nevertheless, the improvement by basalt fibres is able to meet the typical design target values and the cost is very much less than synthetic fibres. More importantly, basalt fibres are environment friendly.INTRODUCTIONConstruction of buildings in low lands with engineered filling, flexible and rigid pavements for highways/airfields, and embankments for highways/railways are also part of major infrastructural development in addition to construction of tall buildings, bridges/fly overs, major dams and underground structures. The later projects require different improvement techniques than that is adopted in the former projects. Ground improvement techniques such as use of reinforcement inclusions within soil found as an effective and reliable technique. Especially such modification by fibre reinforcement, is primarily possible in engineered filling, pavements subgrade and embankments, where surface mixing is easier; and may not be feasible when stabilization/modification is required for deeper depths. In comparison with conventional reinforcement using geosynthetics (strips, geotextile, geogrid, etc.), there are some advantages in using randomly distributed fibre as reinforcement. In past few decades, the discrete fibres are simply added and mixed randomly with soil, in much the same way as cement, lime, or other additives.There are several studies (Ziegler et al. 1998; Puppala et al. 2000; Bei-xing et al. 2004; Cai et al. 2006; Tang et al. 2007, 2012, 2016; Abdi et al. 2008; Viswanadham et al. 2009; Le et al. 2015) that investigated the behaviour of polypropylene fibre-reinforced soil and reported that an increase in fibre content caused an increase in strength and shrinkage potential but brought on the reduction of swelling potential. The length of fibres had an insignificant effect on soil characteristics, whereas fibre contents proved more influential and effective. A study on rubber fibre conducted by Hambirao and Rakaraddi (2014) mentions that tensile cracking of clays can be improved with the inclusion of short rubber fibres, optimum fibre content was about 15 % of weight of soil. Several experimental studies (Babu et al. 2008; Chaple and Dhatrak 2013; Vibhakar and Nahta 2014; Soundara and Senthilkumar 2015; Goyal et al. 2015; Jayasree et al. 2014, 2015) were conducted on coir fibre-reinforced soil and concluded that it helped in reducing the swell potential and 1% fibre by weight of the soil almost doubled the CBR value. Martins et al. (2015) found that 4% of sisal fibre by weight of the soil reduced the visibility of cracks. Pillai and Ayothiraman (2012), Ayothiraman et al. (2014) and Sahu et al. (2016) have demonstrated that human hair fibres can be used to improve the properties of both fine grained and coarse grained soils."

One of the serious environmental problems related with the extraction of coal for carbon and energy resources is that upon preparation of coal a large quantity of fine coal has been discarded and/or lost to tailing impoundments. These problems present hazardous conditions to the local community. Also, the precious heating value of energy resources has been wasted and Left unrecovered in the tailing impoundments. Both RCR and SMRC ACTs recognize and mandate an investigation into slurry impoundment problems, including consideration of potential use of those coal fines in the tailing ponds. Bituminous coal producing district 46 encompasses the northern panhandle of West Virginia. The major producing seam in this district is the Pittsburgh coal, 1-7 meters thick. 75 percent of the coal producted in this district is deep mine. This district produces approximately 3 million tons of coal waste materials annually. One of the coal preparation plants in the district which we have visited has been processing Pittsburgh too. 8 seam coal for the past ten years. The characteristic data of the Pittsburgh raw coal is shown in Table 1. The raw coal produced in this district is characterized by its high heating value, high ash and high sulfur contents. The coal preparation plant flowsheet designed and used to process this Pittsburgh raw coal prior to 1979 is shown in Figure 1. It was a partial coal cleaning plant' with 1 092 mt/hr designed capacity, which consisted mainly of a coarse coal cleaning circuit. The rejected fine particles in the size range of -600µm which consisted of vorsiv underflow and cyclone underflow from clean coal streams and spiral classifier overflow from refuse stream were settled down in a thickener with the aid of anionic flocculant prior to being pumped to the tailing ponds for disposal. Figure 2 shows that the same coal preparation plant in Figure 1 was modified to a semi-complete coal cleaning plant and expanded its designed capacity to 1 820 mt/hr, when market of coal fines becomes feasible in 1979. Tabling in the clean coal circuit and thermal dryer in the dewatering circuit were added to the flow sheet. The purpose is to recover more coal fines, reduce more pyritic sulfur and ash contents in coal and also to reduce solid waste material to be stored into the slurry impoundment, giving them a Longer Life. The rejected fine particles fed to the thickener are clean coal fines from two cyclone overflows and the fine refuse from the rufuse cyclone overflow. The clean coal fines presently lost to the tailing impoundments are in the size range of -150 µm and constitute about 5 percent of the overall plant feed. Total amount of tailing waste material accumulated in a tailing impoundment is estimated at 1.3 million metricton for the past ten years.

"As-cast aluminum alloy microstructures are highly segregated. Coring occurs when solute is rejected during solidification resulting in a non-uniform solute distribution across the dendrite arms. Furthermore, coarse constituent phases are formed in the interdendritic channels as a result of coring. These constituents are either soluble or insoluble and can form from the major solute elements, or the impurity elements iron and silicon. The dissolution of these constituents, or precipitates, is an important consideration in determining the microstructural evolution of an alloy. The properties of an alloy are significantly affected by the morphology of the precipitates. Precipitates can be either beneficial or detrimental to the properties of the alloy. Regardless of the nature of the precipitates present, it is useful to understand the dissolution process. A diffusion-limited dissolution model for planar precipitates is presented and compared to an analytical solution and to models in the literature. Experimental data for the dissolution of AhCu precipitates in a dilute alloy are compared to the proposed model, and found to have good agreement.IntroductionDuring the processing of precipitation hardening alloys, beginning with the solidification step and ending with the final solution heat treatment step, there are a variety of particles that form. Some of these particles must be dissolved and solute redistributed and re-precipitated in a more homogeneous distribution than as it first appears in the as-cast microstructure. The particles can be classified by size as microstructure develops during processing. Coarse particles that form during solidification can either be soluble, partially soluble or insoluble. These particles can be the result of coring of the major solute elements as well as the limited solubility of elements such as iron and silicon. Iron and silicon can combine with the major solute elements such as copper in 2xxx alloys forming coarse phases often referred to as constituents. Figure l(a) shows the as cast microstructure with the constituent phases, Al2Cu and the insoluble phases containing Al-Fe-Mn-Cu-Si [7]. During preheating the soluble phases such as AhCu that were formed by eutectic decomposition must be taken back into solution, whereas the insoluble phases remain essentially unchanged by most thermal operations. Figure l(b) and (c) show some of these constituents after subsequent preheating steps. In Figure l(b), AhCu platelets are shown and in Figure l(c) the remnants of the AhCu phase are noticeable, along with Mn-bearing dispersoid phases. Reduction in the volume fraction and size of these phases improves the ductility and fracture toughness as well as reducing the inhomogeneities that occur during coring. Also adjacent to the dendrite arm boundaries are smaller AhCu phases that precipitate by a solid-state transformation on cooling to room temperature."

"Refuge alternatives (RA) provide shelter to miners trapped underground during a disaster. RA manufacturers must demonstrate that their RAs meet the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements for oxygen supply, carbon dioxide removal, and the management of heat that results from the RA occupants and mechanical/chemical systems. In this study, miner size and activity level were used to determine the metabolic heat rate, oxygen requirements, and carbon dioxide generation that is representative of miners in a refuge situation. A convenience sample of 198 male miners was used for the distribution of current US coal miners, and the composite 95th percentile height and weight were determined to be 193 cm (76 in) and 133 kg (293 lb). The resting metabolic rate (RMR) was determined to be representative of activity level in an RA. The highest likely metabolic heat generation ranged from 115 W to 135 W, depending on RA occupancy. The highest required oxygen supply and carbon dioxide removal were estimated to be 23 LO2/h/person (0.81 ft3/h/person) and 20 LCO2/h/person (0.71 ft3/h/person), which means the margin of safety is 50% or more when compared to the MSHA requirements. INTRODUCTION Refuge alternatives (RAs) provide shelter to miners trapped underground during a disaster. Manufacturers must demonstrate that their RAs meet Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements for the supply of oxygen, the removal of carbon dioxide, and the management of heat that results from the occupants and the mechanical/chemical systems in the RA [1]. These MSHA requirements were based on a standard 70 kg (168 lb) male with an assumed allocation of activity of 80% rest and 20% moderate activity level [2]. The purpose of this paper is to re-examine the metabolic heat generation and oxygen and carbon dioxide requirements of miners in an RA based on actual miner size and more realistic RA activity levels based on current RA designs. The purpose of this paper is to re-examine the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements for oxygen supply, carbon dioxide removal, and heat generation. To achieve this, researchers took the following steps to estimate the metabolic demands and the associated heat generation, oxygen requirements, and carbon dioxide production. 1. Characterized the anthropometric characteristics of the miner population. 2. Described the metabolic rate profile of RA occupants. 3. Characterized the maintenance demands of RAs. 4. Summarized oxygen supply and carbon dioxide removal volumes. ANTHROPOMETRIC CHARACTERISTICS OF MINERS The weight, height, and age distributions of the adult male populations are summarized in Table 1. For each data set, the reported mean and standard deviation are provided. The 95th percentile (%ile) value for height and weight for each population was the mean plus 1.64 times the standard deviation."

"INTRODUCTION This report is the first of several dealing with the application of flotation methods for beneficiating the calcareous and siliceous red iron ores and ferruginous sandstones of the Birmingham district. The flotation study was part of a general investigation of the concentratability of various iron ores of Alabama and other Southeastern States undertaken by the Southern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Ala.Batch testing and pilot-plant flotation testing of the calcareous red ores of the Birmingham district have been in progress for several years, and although some phases of the study are not yet completed, enough data are available to indicate that many of the ores will yield marketable-grade concentrates with good recovery.The first flotation tests on the calcareous red ores employing conventional methods either the iron oxides or the siliceous gangue materials failed to give the desired results. The inferior separations obtained or prohibitive reagent requirements made the methods unattractive. Other more effective flotation methods were sought. A laboratory study of various reagents was undertaken. It resulted in the development of two attractive methods embracing anionic flotation of the activated siliceous gangue from the retarded iron oxides. The methods were similar in that fatty acid or soap-collecting agents were employed in strongly alkaline pulps to float the naturally activated quartz from the iron-ore pulps. The methods differed, however, in the addition agent employed to retard the hematite or hematite and calcite. By proper choice and quantity of the addition agent, the calcite could be floated with the quartz or retarded with the hematite as desired. Ability to recover or reject the calcite gives added flexibility to the separation. Although the methods have their limitations and cannot be considered ""cure-alls,"" they have given encouraging results on a number of calcareous red ores that heretofore proved difficult to concentrate by conventional flotation procedures."

The coal-bearing rocks in Iowa occur in an arcuate belt across the central and southern parts of the State (fig. 1) at the northern end of the Western Interior coal field. Coal beds of minable thickness are sporadic throughout this area and are mined principally in the three districts indicated by dark shading on the index map, although coal occurs also in the areas indicated by light shading. The coal is mostly of high-volatile C bituminous rank in all parts of the State. SURFACE FEATURES The coal-bearing rocks in Iowa are concealed for the most part by a covering of glacial drift ranging in thickness from a few feet to several hundred feet. This covering has been dissected to form a gently rolling upland, rising from an elevation of 466 feet at the mouth of the Des Moines River to about 1,200 feet in Calhoun County in the central part of the State. The local relief, however, rarely exceeds 150 to 200 feet.

One important element of the U.S. Bureau of Mines computer-assisted mining research program is the development of a reliable coal interface detection (CID) system. Several candidate CID concepts currently being investigated by the Bureau include use of natural gamma radiation (NGR), vibration, passive infrared, video, and radar. To help establish which CID sensor technologies need to be developed for a given seam, the Bureau has collected geological and mining practices data from over 460 underground and surface mines in the United States. Also, over 500 coal and rock samples have been obtained for laboratory analyses of ash content, sulfur content, heating value, and NGR. The Bureau's findings indicate that the immediate roof strata in 81% of the underground mines and 93% of the surface mines are made up of shale, draw slate, or claystone. The immediate floor strata in 88% of both the underground and surface mines consist of fireclay, shale, draw slate, or claystone. The results of the NGR testing indicate that the NGR method appears to be a potentially useful CID tool, provided that the immediate roof and floor are both composed of a high percentage of shale-type material.

The Salt Flat field, formerly called the Toe -Bruner field, is located northeast of the town of Luling in Caldwell County, Tex. This field, which is a fault structure, approximately parallels and is about 5 miles east of the Old Luling field. The proved area is approximately 1,280 acres, on which 332 producing wells (September, 1930) have been drilled. The majority of the wells are producing from the Edwards limestone at an average total depth of 2,700 feet. A few wells are producing from the Austin chalk or from other formations above the Edwards limestone. The Wilcox formation is exposed, and the fault trace in places is scarcely evident. The strike of the structure is approximately 111. 20 to 45° E. The displacement of the fault is probably 200 to 500 feet. The discovery well was completed in the Austin chalk by the Lutex Oil Co. during April, 1928. In October, 1928, the Sun Oil Co. completed the discovery well in the Edwards pay. This well was an important discovery, as it indicated the potential oil possibilities of the Edwards limestone in echelon fault structures. The discovery led to the development of the third fault field in the Edwards limestone and opened up a large area for future prospecting. The total oil production for the Salt Flat field to and including September, 1930, was 19,833,215 barrels. The most reliable figures available of water production were compiled for a number of leases and wells in the south half of the field. These data show that the water percentage for the average well in this part of the field increased steadily from 30 per cent for January, 1929, to 81 per cent for December, 1929. The estimated daily water production of the entire field for December, 1929, was about 82,000 barrels as compared with a daily oil production of 29,725 barrels; or approximately 2.7 barrels of water were produced with each barrel of oil 14 months after the discovery well was completed in the Edwards pay. Estimates of water production in the (Old) Luling field, which is near the Salt Flat field, place the daily water production at about 150,000 barrels (July, 1929) as compared with a daily oil production of 11,000 barrels. These figures indicate that in the Luling field approximately 14 barrels of water must be lifted for each barrel of oil produced. The Luling field was discovered in August, 1922, and a peak annual production of 10,210,000 barrels was reached during 1924. The production during 1928 was 5,057,000 barrels of oil from an average of 567 producing wells for the year. Although water appeared early in the life of the Luling field, the oil production has been well sustained. Another feature of outstanding interest is the comparatively few producing wells that have been abandoned on account of water during the soven years of operation of this field. Comparison of data between the Luling and Salt Flat fields is of importance because of the nearness of the two fields. The Luling field is a narrow strip or "shoestring" approximately 8 miles long, with a maximum width of 3,400 feet. Production is obtained in the Edwards limestone at an average depth of 2,200 feet on the upthrow side of a fault. Similar conditions of accumulation are found in the Salt Flat field at greater depth to Salt Flat field as outlined (April, 1930) is about 7 miles long? with a maximum width of 2,000 feet. At the time the field work was begun (July, 1929) in the Salt Flat field, drilling operations had been almost completed in the south half of the field, while the north half was still under development. Cross sections and a structure contour map interpret the subsurface conditions in the south half of the field, where the water conditions first became serious.

This article examines the spatial variability of dust concentrations within a coal miner?s breathing zone and the impact of sampling location at the cap lamp, nose, and lapel. Tests were conducted in the National Institute for Safety and Health Pittsburgh Research Laboratory full-scale, continuous miner gallery using three prototype personal dust monitors (PDM). The dust masses detected by the PDMs were used to calculate the percentage difference of dust mass between the cap lamp and the nose and between the lapel and the nose. The calculated percentage differences of the masses ranged from plus 12% to minus 25%. Breathing zone tests were also conducted in four underground coal mines using the torso of a mannequin to simulate a miner. Coal mine dust was sampled with multi-cyclone sampling cans mounted directly in front of the mannequin near the cap lamp, nose, and lapel. These four coal mine tests found that the spatial variability of dust levels and imprecision of the current personal sampler is a greater influence than the sampler location within the breathing zone. However, a one-sample t-test of this data did find that the overall mean value of the cap lamp/nose ratio was not significantly different than 1 (p-value = 0.21). However, when applied to the overall mean value of the lapel/nose ratio there was a significant difference from 1 (p-value < .0001). This finding is important because the lapel has always been the sampling location for coal mine dust samples. But these results suggest that the cap location is slightly more indicative of what is breathed through the nose area.

IN a previous study of hypereutectoid Ti-Ni alloys&apos; a substructure was observed in quenched powder specimens when the constitution was 100 pet retained ß body-centered-cubic phase. The alloy powders were quenched from 1000°C by a blast of helium gas and precautions already described were observed throughout the work, to minimize contamination. Ogden et al.2 have previously observed subboundaries in the ß phase of a Ti-Mn-N alloy; but this structure was attributed to nitrogen-rich a precipitation. The nitrogen content of the Ti-Ni alloys does not exceed 0.02 pet and the quenching rate was sufficiently rapid to suppress precipitation reactions. Since X-ray diffraction results have confirmed the absence of any second phase which might account for this phenomenon, it seems unlikely that this substructure is explicable in terms of nitrogen content. Fig. 1 shows the substructure in adjacent grains of 100 pet ß phase in a quenched 6 atomic pet Ni alloy. Fig. 2 shows adjacent ß grains in a similarly treated alloy; one grain contains marked intracrys-talline boundaries and the other is completely free from any substructure. The suberystals appear to have fairly regular shapes, suggesting a regular orientation relationship among them. Tempering the retained ß structure at temperatures below the eutectoid eliminates the substructure at an early stage of ß decomposition. At the present time it is possible only to guess at an explanation for this subboundary phenomenon, since very little work has been reported on substructures resulting from phase changes. DELN ITE Mines Limited is located in Deloro township, on the west end of the south break of the Porcupine Camp. Mining operations are currently being carried out on the downward extension of a system of quartz veins in an andesite zone. This zone has been followed from surface to the present bottom level of 5,250 feet. The changing mineralogy of the vein system has involved an increase in tourmaline content from the surface downwards, so that the veins at the lower levels are composed of dark brown quartz-tourmaline. The drilling problem presented by these extremely hard veins was partially alleviated by the development and adoption of a one-inch drill bit. All blast-hole drilling is now done with the one-inch bit, without any difference in hole spacing.
