"IntroductionCONTINUOUS casting of ferrous and non-ferrous metals is not a new innovation. Patents describing machines for continuous casting are on file as far back as the year 1842. In the middle of the last century, Sir Henry Bessemer conceived and built a continuous casting• machine for the production of mild steel sheet.The production of billets and slabs of both non-ferrous and ferrous metals is being carried out by the continuous method on a fairly large scale on this continent and abroad. At present, the volume of production of •copper and aluminum and their alloys in billet and slab form is much greater than the continuous casting of steel products. The new installation of a continuous casting unit at Atlas Steels, Limited, is designed primarily for the casting of alloy steel billets and slabs.As an introduction to the art of continuous .casting of metals, it is interesting to examine a few of the many devices which have been developed. As previously mentioned, Sir Henry Bessemer constructed a machine for the direct casting of mild steel sheet. His discoveries and ideas of continuously casting steel formed the foundation for the work of other pioneers in this field, all of whom have contributed to the improvement of this art through the ensuing years. The machines which will be selected for examination are those of Bessemer, Poland-Lindner, Williams, Ennor, and Junghans. The last unit to be discussed will be a modification of the Junghans machine recently installed at Atlas Steels."

Many mining wastes, especially those from the metal mining industry, have traditionally been treated as a matter of little or no value and in practice a cost burden. Some wastes, due to their reactivity characteristics, have emergent values that go beyond purely economic and into the environmentally beneficial realm. This paper discusses the changing paradigm of mine waste management. Such fundamental parameters such as cut off grade, and strip ratio, are positively impacted by the revaluation of waste rock material. Mine rock waste can now be seen as a commodity of value, similar to the underlying ore being mined and influences the economic performance of suitable projects. This valuable material can be used for industrial purposes including acid neutralization as well as the capture and long-term disposal of anthropogenic carbon dioxide. The Turnagain Nickel project, located in northern British Columbia serves as an example of how waste rock material can become an important matrix for carbon capture and sequestration and can benefit economically from it. By producing material that has emergent economic value as well as carbon capture and sequestration capabilities, the sequestration matrix producer is a beneficiary of new carbon credits that have a market value and is looked upon favourably by regulatory authorities and affected stakeholders.

"The aluminum industry generates about 90 million tonnes of red mud each year. Previous research shows it could be utilized as a refining flux with a high capacity to absorb phosphorus and sulphur from hot metal in the steel industry. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the melting properties of such fluxes, as it affects the effectiveness of the flux. The results show that the melting behavior of red mud is strongly affected by lime addition and the characteristic melting/softening temperatures reach minimum VALUES (at 32.7 wt% CaO. From these findings, a correlation was established between melting behavior and optical basicity. This allows one to adjust the composition of the flux based on the process requirements. INTRODUCTIONThe aluminum industry generates about 90 million tonnes of bauxite residues each year. This residue is usually red in color because it contains a substantial amount of iron oxide. The red mud, as it is called, is a solid waste with a high concentration of sodium oxide, high pH (10 to 13), and high alkalinity, and thus is harmful to many forms of life. Traditionally, the material is stored in large tailings ponds within the plant’s vicinity (Power, Grafe, & Klauber, 2009). Development of solutions for safe disposal or preferably using this residue for other industrial processes or applications could help restore polluted locations and eliminate a negative impact on the environment (Haake, 1988; Power et al., 2009; Yan & Xuegong, 2010).The mineralogy and chemical composition of red mud depends on the quality of the bauxite and refining process parameters. In general, it consists of iron oxide (Fe2O3), aluminum oxide (Al2O3), titanium oxide (TiO2), sodium oxide (Na2O), silicon oxide (SiO2), and calcium oxide (CaO) (Power et al., 2009). Like most ores and soils, bauxite can contain trace quantities of metals such as arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, lead, manganese, mercury, nickel, and naturally-occurring radioactive materials, such as thorium and uranium. Most of these trace elements stay in the residue (Power et al., 2009)."

The degree to which copper will continue to be in an integral part of the world economy in the future will depend largely on the dynamics of global economic development, the primary and secondary copper resource stock, technological change, and potential environmental constraints. We have characterized the copper cycle of 1994 for all of Earth's regions and for the planet itself (T. Graedel et al., Environmental Science & Technology, 38, 1242-1252, 2004) and recently updated that cycle to year 2000. In this paper, we compare various features of the 1994 and 2000 cycles. The three largest-using regions, Asia, Europe, and North America, all increased their absolute rate of copper use between 1994 and 2000, and all increased the per-capita rate of copper use as well. Globally, the use of copper increased by about 32%, from 11.7 to 15.3 million metric tons, while population increased by only 8%. Various changes are seen in scrap trade, finished products trade, and other parameters of the cycle. We conclude by considering how the rates of technological change and growth in demand, especially in Asia, may influence the copper cycle in the years ahead.

Rubidium and cesium were discovered by Bunsen and Kirchhoff about 100 years ago. These two elements are by no means as abundant as sodium or potassium. Their occurrence in minerals is widespread, but usually as minor constituents. There is no known specific ore containing rubidium, but rubidium is found replacing the. other alkali metals in .some minerals.. Perhaps the highest concentration of rubidium found in one mineral is in lepidolite, KLi(OH,F)2A12Si3010, which contains from 0 to 3.5%*Rb20. 0n the average, lepidolite contains about 0.5% Rb20. Other sources of rubidium are carnallite, KMgCl3?6H20; pollucite, H20.2Cs20.2AI203.9SiO2; rhodizite, R20.2A1203-3B203; biotite, H2K(Mg,Fe)3A1(Si04)3; sea water, rivers, marine and fresh water organisms, soils, and plants. Cesium, even though it is the least abundant. of the stable alkalies, has a specific ore. Pollucites a hydrous cesium aluminum silicate, may con¬tain as high as 42.5% Cs20, although again, the average Cs20 content is about 25% among the handful of known deposits. Other cesium-containing minerals are lepidolite and carnallite. Rubidium and cesium are very much like potassium in chemical properties, consequently, they are hard to separate. Because of the difficulty in obtaining pure cesium and rubidium compounds coupled with the scarcity-of supply, prices were high and the two elements enjoyed little industrial use. "To comply with the new Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards, the automotive industry is aiming to reduce weight and increase the power and efficiency of small displacement engines through the application of forced induction technologies. As an example, there are now several 2.0 litre turbocharged engines in production, producing in excess of 240 hp. To meet the need for improved fatigue properties in the engine blocks used in these high-output engines, a new water-cooled chill technology is under exploration at UBC in partnership with General Motors and Nemak. A series of experimental techniques were used to assess the capability of the new chill to extract heat from an A319 casting in the vicinity of the main bearing bulk head. The results show that this method has the potential to achieve a reduction in secondary dendrite arm spacing thus meeting the new microstructural specifications for these engines.INTRODUCTION The automotive industry is working to meet the stricter efficiency requirements laid out within the CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) regulations (Bastani, 2012; Cole, 1995; Mackay, 2011; Miller, 2000), while at the same time not sacrificing performance. One approach is to increase the use of lightweight materials, which leads to a decrease in the overall vehicle weight and fuel consumption (Cole, 1995; Mackay, 2011; Miller, 2000). Other approaches include smaller displacement engines and gas-electric hybrid drivetrains. However, one trend that is becoming clear, is a greater emphasis on force induction gasoline engines. This allows for weight reduction to be achieved with smaller displacement engines without sacrificing performance. One consequence of this approach is that the engine block materials are subject to higher in-service thermal and mechanical cyclic loads (Cole, 1995; Miller, 2011; Heysler, 2001) The fatigue properties of an alloy are strongly affected by a number of the, as-cast, microstructure features including, Secondary Dendrite Arm Spacing (SDAS), porosity and eutectic lamella spacing (including intermetallic ß-Al5FeSi platelets) (Mackay, 2010a; Mackay, 2010b; Viet-Duc, 2015; Casellas, 2005). It is generally accepted they can act as fatigue initiation sites and that a reduction in their size will result in an improvement in fatigue performance. For a given alloy chemistry, one of the key parameters affecting the length scale of all three is cooling rate (Mackay, 2000)."

In this paper we introduce a realistic model for mine openings that explicitly considers the effects of local irregular topography. Also, we consider the effect of entry orientation and rock anisotropy on the induced stress fields around mine openings under the given in-situ stress field. A triangular mesh formulation is derived for representing complicated irregular surface topography and underground openings. Each element contains three internal collocation nodes. Parts of the surface which are far from the mine openings are discretized by infinite elements. The rectangular infinite elements with three internal nodes are introduced specifically for this problem so they are compatible with the triangular elements. With the corresponding boundary element method (BEM) formulation, we then investigate the combined effect of the topography and entry orientation on the stress fields induced by openings in anisotropic rocks under in-situ stresses. A single rectangular opening in the anisotropic ground with topography and in-situ stresses is simulated using data from the Carroll Hollow mine in Ohio. The results of these simulations show that topography, rock anisotropy, orientation of the regional stress field and mine opening geometry all have appreciable effects on the stress fields around underground openings, yet these factors can all be accounted for in an efficient code with no need to discretize the model domain. Future applications using this new BEM formulation will provide useful guidance on selecting the optimal opening orientation in the mine in order to minimize undesirable stress concentrations around underground mine workings.

Model reconciliation problems at the low-grade, high-nugget Phoenix gold-copper deposit led to an examination of the influence of production decisions on ore-waste classification. A conditional simulation study of the deposit was used as the basis for: 1) quantification of dilution at different bench heights, 2) quantification of ore-waste misclassification relative to bench heights and cut-off wades, and 3) determination of an appropriate number of samples to optimize ore-control polygon definition. Actual reconciliation data were empirically used to support conclusions. Simulations of both gold and copper were combined through net revenue modelling. These simulations increased understanding of the nature of the deposit and provided insight for resource modeling and mine planning.

This paper gives the cost and describes the mining of 55 tons of nickel-bearing rock by hand methods from a prospect in southern Nevada, June 15, 1937, by the Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines. The geology, mineralogy, and problems related to future development also are discussed briefly. The main object was to obtain a 55-ton sample within the limited period during which funds were available; little time was available to make a first-hand detailed study of the possibility of commercial ore deposits being found. The sample was desired by the Metallurgical Division of the Bureau for experimental purposes at the Electro-Metallurgical Station at Boulder City, Nev. The term "ore" is used loosely in the following discussion to designate dike material containing nickel and copper, without consideration of its commercial value. Room temperature ionic liquids (RTIL) can replace certain traditional organic solvents in liquid/liquid extraction of metal ions from aqueous systems. The very low vapor pressure and non-flammable nature of RTIL warrant consideration of these neoteric solvents for new processing technologies which will reduce pollution, Increase safety, and lower costs. Metal ion separations in RTIL, however, will typically require the use of an extractant and research is needed to identify suitable selective extractants which have appreciable solubility in the RTIL and low solubility In the aqueous phase. Choice of extractant should also take into account the toxicity, expense, and disposal of the ligand.

"The wide publicity that is given to the discover; of new oil fields has led many people to believe that our supply of crude petroleum is practically in- exhaustible and that in order to keep pace with the demand for petroleum products, it is only necessary to drill a few more wells in some of the south-western states. It is not generally realized that, although many famous fields have been developed in Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas and Louisiana during the past few years, the production of crude oil in 1919 was not sufficient to meet the demand and it was necessary to import approximately 53,000,000 barrels from Mexico.Continued efforts are being made to recover a larger percentage of the oil underground by improvements in methods of drilling and in handling producing properties. Improvements are also being made in methods for handling the oil after it has reached the surface which will result in reducing losses through leakage and through evaporation. These methods for cutting down waste in production and storage, if universally adopted, will no doubt result in appreciable increases in our supply of crude oil."

The Jamaica Mining Legislation requires the bauxite companies operating in the island to reclaim all mined-out lands (except those legitimately excluded) to the level of agricultural or pastoral productivity, which existed prior to the commencement of mining. If it is not possible to reclaim a mined-out area the companies are required to reclaim an equivalent area of some other land which had not previously been used for agricultural purposes, or alternatively, pay to the government the sum of $120 (US) for every acre of land mined in the particular sector. In the seventeen years since the programme commenced the companies have in general chosen to reclaim most of the mined-out lands, rather than the cheaper alternative. However, the ultimate success of the programme will depend not only on actual reclamation per se but moreso the productivity of the rehabilitated lands. There are a number of reasons why the accent has to be placed on productivity of the lands. The first is that Jamaica is a small country (4,450 square miles) with a population of nearly 2 million people. Because of its mountainous terrain it is estimated that only 35% of the land area is cultivable in crops and pastures; hence this limited area, as well as that which can be reclaimed, must be made highly productive in order to support local and export demands. The Mining companies own over 200,000 acres of land, and of this acreage, it is conservatively estimated that about 75,000 will be affected by mining and will be reclaimed. As such, the use of the land after mining can have an important bearing on Jamaica's future agricultural productivity. A physical model based on similarity principles was constructed for simulating the RH degasser of CST (Companhia Siderurgica Tubarao, Vitoria, ES, Brazil) to evaluate the circulation rate of the metal which essentially defines the degree of exposure of the metal to vacuum in the chamber and thus of the refining rate. The circulation rate on the other hand will influence the decarburization rate and removal of dissolved gases like nitrogen and hence it is essential to optimise this parameter to get maximum refining efficiency with minimum refming times, thus improving the productivity of the secondary refining process. Mixing characteristics in the ladle is evaluated by pulse tracer addition using conductivity-meters located at the down leg as well as at several locations in the ladle. The influence of gas injection through nozzles in the upleg with simultaneous bottom injection of gas as well as nozzle blockage on the circulation rates were investigated. Also simulation experiments of kinetics of decarburization were carried out using C02 adsorption-desorption process in sodium hydroxide solution as circulating fluid and the effect of, bottom gas flow rate in this case was also evaluated. The results were carried over to prototype and to optimize the process.

"This article presents the results of comprehensive research on the quantitative distribution of gold content in the raw ore and tailings from the flotation enrichment process at the Ellatzite Med plant. The study is a quantitative and qualitative determination of the presence of gold in the ore processed by Ellatzite Med AD, as well as its behavior and distribution in the various metallurgical products of the flotation process. The representativeness of the samples taken is ensured by the frequency of sampling: four work shifts of sampling on different days within a period of four consecutive weeks. The form of gold present is determined both in the analyzed samples and in separate fractions - granulometric, magnetic, electromagnetic, heavy and light. A summarized diagram presents the phase distribution of gold in the final products of the dressing process. The results obtained are used for further analysis and evaluation of the actual technological parameters of the gold. It was established that an increase in the initial gold content, respectively in the content of native gold in the raw ore, with the current process, leads to an increase in gold losses, mostly in the native gold phase. The conducted analysis of the results from the comprehensive tests on determining the form of gold present in the various enrichment products gave rise to further research with the use of a Knelson centrifugal concentrator."

It is known that an addition of rigid particles into a fluid medium changes the flow field. Therefore, the rheological behavior of suspensions will be hardly Newtonian, such as their continuum phase. This phenomena was studied by Einstein in 1906 (Einstein, 1956) for the single case of spherical particles in a continuum liquid of a very dilute suspension. The final analysis applied for suspensions was derived from the evaluation of the behavior of ideal gases, finding a simple expression for the viscosity of the dispersion. All the following works about the hydrodynamics of suspensions at low and high solid contents was based in the Einstein´s model. For clay minerals suspensions where the physical and chemical properties of the particles are complex, it was found that the Einstein´s model is not a good approximation, even so for the most dilute dispersions. The present paper shows a new approximation that describes the non-Newtonian behavior of the suspensions of clays, and the attempt of understand how the different fine sizes, shapes and physico-chemical properties of clay particle surfaces give specific characteristics of plasticity, viscosity or visco elasticity to suspensions. The 50 ohm resistorized electric detonator is commonly used in the oilfield for initiation of wireline conveyed perforating guns and other downhole explosive tools. This type of electric detonator provides some degree of safety above that of the conventional one ohm electric detonator, since a higher current level is required to initiate the device. In order to obtain the necessary data to develop safe distance tables from RF sources for the 50 ohm electric detonator, laboratory tests were conducted to determine the detonator’s “no-fire” current, AC impedance, and its susceptibility to ESD. The results were surprising as two types of failure modes were observed. The “no-fire’ current levels determined from Langlie “One-Shot” Test Methods were determined for the devices tested providing values for the 0.999 probability “no-fire” power level at a 95% confidence level. This data will serve as the basis for sets of safe distance tables from RF sources that will appear in the forthcoming edition of the Institute of Makers of Explosives Safety Library Publication 20, “Safety Guide for the Prevention of Radio Frequency Radiation Hazards in the Use of Commercial Electric Detonators, (Blasting Caps)”.

"Tailings generated during the upgrading of ore present a major challenge for the mineral processing industry. On one hand, the processing of tailings requires added capital input. On the other hand, increased difficulties in obtaining permits for dams and landfilling and increased costs associated with storage and tailings management also result in increased costs. To promote sustainability and make tailings management economical, added value must be generated from the waste material. This might be possible through the recovery of the metal values in the waste. This work discusses the possibilities of recovering metals from multimetal tailings through leaching in a stirred tank. The characteristics of the tailings are crucial and the distribution of the metals within the different size fractions is used to identify the most attractive route for the hydrometallurgical step. Leaching of nickel and copper is further investigated using acids at different concentrations. The leaching of base metals is possible at acidic conditions. Increased temperature and concentration of the leaching agent promote the dissolution of the metals, as could be expected. With simultaneous dissolution of several metals the dissolution mechanisms are difficult to identify. Furthermore, as several metals, not all of them being target elements, are leached another challenge arises from the selective recovery of those metals from the liquid phase."
