Introduction Gold holds an important place among the mineral products of Manitoba. In value, it ranks second only to copper, which in 1931 attained first place. The gold production increased from 23,189 fine ounces in 1930 to 102,969fine ounces in 1931. The production for 1930, worth $479,359, came almost entirely from the Central Manitoba mine. The production for 1931 was worth $2,128,558, of which $1,509,018 came from the Flin Flon mine, $528,951 from the Central Manitoba, and $83,497 from the Sherritt Gordon. The Gem Lake mine and some prospects produced $7,785. The total output of gold in Manitoba, from the first recorded production in 1917 to the end of 1931, is estimated at 178,669 fine ounces, valued at $3,693,332. The production for 1932 promises to reach a new high record, due chiefly to the stepping-up of tonnage at the Flin Flon plants and the coming into production of the San Antonio mill in May. History The Manitoba Act, constituting Manitoba a Province of the Dominion, was passed in 1870 and provided for the vesting in the Crown of all un-granted or waste lands of Manitoba, as well as for the administration of these lands by the Dominion of Canada for the purposes of the Dominion "subject to, and except and so far as the same may be affected by, the conditions and stipulations contained in the agreement for the surrender of Rupert's Land by the Hudson's Bay Company to the Crown". Included in these waste lands were large areas later prospected and staked out as mineral lands. Up to the year 1912, that vast territory extending from the 12th base line to the 60th parallel of latitude, and from the Saskatchewan boundary to Hudson bay, was part of the District of Keewatin. Although added to Manitoba in 1912, the administration of its mineral lands also remained vested in the Dominion, so that all mineral lands within the Province upon which deposits of gold ore have been found were disposed of and administered by the Mineral Lands Division, Department of the Interior, until the transfer of the natural resources to the Province of Manitoba, on July 15th, 1930.

"The Property of Opemiska Copper Mines (Quebec) Ltd. is in Levy Township, Chibougamau district, west of Chibougamau and south of Opemiska Lake. The original find was made in 1929 by the late Leo Springer and associates of Prospectors Airways Ltd., following observation from the air of an area of dark rocks in newly burned-over country. Work on the ground discovered three veins of high-grade chalcopyrite in gabbro (No. l, No. 2, and ""North"") and, after several seasons of trenching and diamond drilling, financed by Ventures Ltd., a shaft was sunk in 1936. This work indicated about 280,000 tons of six per cent copper ore to a depth of 500 feet. During this period, the senior author carried out a reconnaissance geological survey over the whole property and surrounding claims, which showed that the veins were in the gabbro portion of a large composite basic sill that had been folded with the enclosing lavas. Owing to the low price of copper and lack of transport work was suspended and the property remained dormant until 1951.In that year the company was re-financed, the property prepared for production, and further exploratory drilling undertaken. The drilling, based on structural indications, located a new vein of which the only previous evidence had been some irregular stringers. This vein, No. 3, was traced by drilling for a length of 2,000 feet and the indicated reserves were thereby increased to about one million tons. An additional vein, No. 4, was intersected in several holes.With this encouragement, plans for production were confirmed, and operations commenced' at the beginning of 1954 on a scale of about 400 tons a day, concentrates being shipped by truck to St. Felicien and thence by rail to Noranda. In the first year of operation concentrates were re-covered carrying 14,047,210 pounds of copper, 76,714 ounces of silver, and 6,259 ounces of gold. The operation is under the direction of J. P. Millenbach, General Manager, with J. M. Thompson as Assistant General Manager and F. G. Cooke as General Superintendent on the property."

The single track North Strathfield Rail Underpass (NSRU) consists of a dive structure either end of a 148 m long driven tunnel skewed under three live railway tracks. The tunnel is 8 m high, 9 m wide, with a horseshoe profile, excavated by full face using a road header. Ground cover varied between 2.5 m to 3.5 m. Settlements were 5 mm to 15 mm (the latter due to a dyke). A one pass synthetic fibre reinforced shotcrete lining was installed (no lattice girders or steel sets were used). A system of automated robotic total stations was used to provide real time monitoring of the rail track and associated ground formation. This research was conducted as part of the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines program to recover metals, glass, and a combustible fraction from municipal solid waste (MSW). The objective of this analytical study was to determine the concentration of antimony, arsenic, and mercury in samples taken from various sampling areas in the Bureau of Mines raw refuse recycling plant and to compare these values with those for coals used in the generation of electricity. To provide the necessary analytical data, sensitive reproducible ashing-chemical digestion-atomic absorption procedures were adapted from published procedures. It was determined that antimony and mercury concentrations in the combustible fraction of MSW are approximately an order of magnitude higher than those found in coals presently used for power generation;' the arsenic concentration is similar in both fuels.

The Nitrogen Dioxide Cloud: After one year of testing it can be stated that we do know and understand a great deal about why the nitrogen dioxide formation is exacerbated in cast blasting. Picture 1 is an example of how concentrated the NOx can be from a cast blast. It has long been felt that 300 or more milliseconds of timing needs to be put between each row of detonations to allow the rock a maximum time of flight so the cast percentage is high. Our experiments have found that higher cast percentages can make with timing between 150 to 200 milliseconds between rows. Picture 2 show a definite improvement in nitrogen dioxide concentration and most of that was the result of shooting a previously shot end of the cast pattern that had not been dug, thus no confinement of the powder columns.

"In-mine airborne particulate samples have been successfully collected and the relative amounts of diesel and coal determined using the Laser Raman Quantitative Analysis (LRQA) method. This method allows analysis of filters which have been collected by a method similar to that used to determine the airborne respirable dust concentration in us underground coal mines. Samples were taken near the feeder-breaker, on haulage vehicles, and in the returns. Sampling methodologies were developed for coal-only and diesel-only particulate reference samples with sufficient filter loading for the LRQA method. A statistical analysis of reproducibility has been carried out. Samples have been collected simultaneously at two locations using the LRQA and the size-selective sampling methods. Good agreement between the two methods has been found.INTRODUCTIONThe goal of this research has been to develop the Laser Raman Quantitative Analysis (LRQA) method to measure the composition of respirable particulate, i.e. the fractions of coal and of diesel particulate, in the mine ambient air. In earlier Bureau of Mines sponsored research, we successfully demonstrated that the LRQA method could be used to measure the fraction of Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) in coal/diesel particulate mixtures which were prepared in the laboratory.(I) 'The immediate objective was to test and refine this LRQA method on samples collected in a diesel underground coal mine.Specific objectives required to meet this goal include:I) Develop in-mine sample collection methods which will insure sufficient particulate loading on filters for LRQA. ,2) Develop methodology for in-mine collection of reference samples (""coal-only"" and ""diesel-only"" filters) which arc required for quantitative LRQA. 3) Analyze precision and accuracy of the LRQA method. 4) Compare composition measurements with another analytical method, i.e. the University of Minnesota/Bureau of Mines size selective sampling Micro-Orifice Uniform Deposit Impactor (MOUDI) method.An advantage of the LRQA method is that it allows analysis of filters which have been collected by a method similar to that used to determine the respirable dust concentration in US underground coal mines. No new sampling instruments and techniques are required. Transfer of sample from collection substrate to analysis substrate is not necessary. Furthermore, other analyses can be made on the same sample since the technique is nondestructive."

"The Gosowong Gold Project is owned and operated by PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM), an Indonesian company 75 per cent owned by Newcrest. It is located on Halmahera Island, in the North Maluku Province of the Republic of Indonesia, approximately 2450 km north-east of the national capital, Jakarta (Newcrest, 2017).Kencana is one of two underground gold and silver mines at the Gosowong Operation where ground conditions vary from competent to very poor. Development headings occurring in poor rock mass conditions require high capacity ground support including long tendon cable bolts. Manual installation of cable bolts in these development headings has been a time consuming process due to borehole collapse, blockages requiring subsequent re-drilling and a minimum eight hour grout curing time interval. The installation of cable bolts including the setting, plating and tensioning can impact the critical path for development heading advance resulting in development cycle delays.A review was conducted by PT NHM on current industry practices for alternatives to manual cable bolting. PT NHM subsequently approached Minova to assist with the development and trialling of self drilling anchors (SDAs) installed using jumbos with a rapid setting pumpable resin, CARBOTHIXTM. A series of system development trials were conducted and a reliable bolting system was developed utilising the existing jumbo drilling fleet with minimal required modifications.The system developed was a ‘one pass’ bolting process to install and grout SDAs using a two component resin with a remote, mechanised system. Improvements achieved from the system include: eliminating hole closure issues and more immediate support in poor rock mass effectively reducing personnel exposure to poor ground conditions by removing the requirement to access the drive backs reducing grout set time with full installation times for 6 m SDAs averaging 25 min.The resin grouting system has now been successfully implemented to effectively manage areas of poor ground conditions and to accelerate advance rates in high priority headings.CITATION:Pateman, D and Sprague, T, 2017. The aim of this work was to prepare the metallic coatings on 316L stainless steel dental implant and evaluate the corrosion characteristics and thus the biocompatibility of the uncoated and metallic coated dental implants and comparison of the effect of the type of coatings on biocompatibility. Three types of metallic coatings including Tantalum, Niobium, and Titanium coatings were made using physical vapor deposition process on 316L stainless steel dental implant. Structural characterization techniques including; X-ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis were utilized to investigate the microstructure and morphology of the coatings. Electrochemical potentiodynamic tests were performed in two types of physiological solutions at 37±1 °C in order to determine and compare the corrosion characteristics. All three types of metallic coatings had a positive effect on improvement of the corrosion behavior so that the coatings could increase the corrosion resistance of 316L stainless steel and this trend was independent to the type of physiological environment. Biocompatible metallic coatings could decrease the corrosion current density that is a distinct advantage for prevention of ion release. This can improve the biocompatibility of the implant and, consequently prevention of tissue damages, inflammation and irritation and obtained desirable histopathological response.

Smelting approaches available using top submerged lancing technology are discussed and analysed. Pilot plant results for a range of lead and zinc-bearing materials are presented.

"During the history of the sulphur industry there have been three distinct phases of production. Factors controlling supplies during these periods have shifted from demand for sulphur to demand for energy and a cleaner environment. The pattern of brimstone production is t raced through these phases and includes estimates of future supply; these indicate an involuntary excess production of some 20 million plus tons per year by 1980 unless some large-scale new uses are found. Traditional uses for sulphur, including fertilizer, chemicals, fibers, etc., are generally expanding slowly; how• ever, supply in ""by-product"" form alone will soon outstrip demand. The predicted oversupply situation can be corrected by the development of novel potential markets. Promising areas include construction materials, insulation and plastics, among others."

"Tunneling and Underground works are unequivocally subject to a diversity of inherent uncertainties associated with the geotechnical, hydro-geological and environmental regime that surrounds them. On many occasions, these uncertainties can provoke loss events of considerable consequences. The present contribution elaborates on losses that the insurance market has suffered in the recent years, following a construction failure event. These losses are being considered and analysed on a quantitative basis through evaluation of cost related data, with explicit discretization of the applied construction methodology and of the subsequent developed failure type since both of which are considered of major importance. Given the identified persistence and regularity of some loss-contributing factors, recommendations are provided on the basis of a proactive risk engineering management approach that are envisaged to reinforce the understanding of project risks and alleviate the incurred insurance cost. 1 INTRODUCTION The underground construction sector has always been a very challenging area for all involved parties, including the insurance market. Main reason for that remains the uniqueness of the uncertainties sources and the subsequent inherent risks that the tunneling and underground projects are exposed to. In many instances, these risks materialize, leading to loss events with substantially high impact on reinstatement cost and incurred delays, which depending among others on the insurance coverage will have to be bared by the Insurance market. In the recent decades and as the tunneling industry boomed and expanded with many major and significant projects undertaken around the world, the insurance market was faced with additional challenges. Increased competition during tender coupled with the scale and complexity of the projects and politically driven decision making exerted pressure on the project timelines, completion dates and budget. The pressure for on-time or even early project completion- to avoid liquidated damages or achieve bonus payments, respectively- along with cost reduction efforts and the incentive for innovative failure events. That, in turn, put additional pressure on the Insurance market which had experienced a significant amount of losses with substantial cost. One of the triggered mitigation actions was the introduction of the Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works (ITIG, 2006 & 2012; MunichRe 2006, Wannick, 2007, Spencer, 2008, Adeyemo, 2011)."

Conventional processing of poly-metallic gold containing flotation concentrates are challenging for a number of reasons. One reason is that substantial copper and zinc in the cyanide leach solution compete with gold and silver for carbon adsorption sites. In this study, metal-cyanide adsorption kinetics and equilibrium are measured on three samples of coconut derived activated carbon and one sample of synthetic carbon. Loading selectivity was confirmed to be in the order gold>silver>copper>zinc for all carbon samples. After careful investigation of several operating properties it was decided by the officials of the company to take over the lease on an undeveloped acreage held by a private party in Price Canyon, about 3 miles north of Castle Gate, Utah.

The identification of crystal phases and crystal chemistry can be critical to understanding the mechanisms of waste material interaction with native soils. Understanding these mechanisms can suggest correct methods for remediation and treatment. A program is outlined and examples are given of the development of effective techniques for rapid phase identification of environmental samples using electron microscopy. The program concentrates on the development of integrated object oriented software to aid rapid searching of online databases and rapid simulation of potential crystal diffraction patterns. Examples come from dried sludge taken from a former hard-chrome plating facility.

All grade control methods in use currently by the mining industry are imprecise. The methods suffer from being locally inaccurate, leading to are loss and contact dilution. An ore/waste indicator variable can be used to predict the probability of ore occurrence at a given location, Po. Then, an ore grade Zo for an ore location and a waste grade Zw for a waste location are obtained. The expected revenue is calculated at each location, based on its probability of being are or waste, the corresponding grade, and on the cost of mining and processing the ore or the waste. Finally, the decision of whether to recover the block is based on the expected revenue value for that block. The method is illustrated with an example taken from the Jerritt Canyon district in northeastern Nevada.

Because of the inherent safety problem associated with the deposition of airborne respirable dust onto the floor and other airway surfaces, the Bureau of Mines investigated the rate of reduction of airborne respirable dust in an airway due to deposition of the particles onto the surfaces of the airway. The effects of relative humidity and air velocity on the deposition rate were examined. It was found that the deposition rate was comparable in magnitude with the Stokes sedimentation rate and that it was independent of relative humidity. However, near the dust source the deposition rate depended significantly upon the air velocity, with such dependence decreasing with increasing distance from the dust source. In addition, the size distribution of the airborne particles was approximately constant along the first 300 ft of the airway, indicating that it was not merely the larger (heavier) particles that were being deposited. These results suggest that deposition, though comparable with the Stokes sedimentation rate in magnitude, does not follow a simple Stokes-type process, and that the process of deposition remains to be explained.

The paper presents the modeling and simulation experience in field of research into the mineral row material separation. Features of the subject domain generate a need of different approaches using for modeling and simulation. The general scheme of separation modeling process and some examples of developed simulators are presented. Due to different features and standards of knowledge, different formal models should be used to describe and analyze separation processes in the frame of general scheme. The main types of simulators are modeling tools based on statistical, analytical or expert (logical) methods. Advantages and disadvantages of each method above are mentioned in the paper. Based on the studies in the field considered, an aggregated mathematical model of a separation process has been generated. The aggregated model is presented by two combined equations. The actual apparatus model is formed by substitution of the particular functional expressions of the forces acting in the apparatus into the aggregated model. The developed simulation tools are based on integration of limited experimental data and on ex-pert knowledge available on separation processes. Simulation does not allow producing an optimal, in terms of mathematics, solution. But it gives an opportunity to produce and compare quite adequate solution variants in real time. The results obtained are the theoretical and methodological base for integrated information technologies to support studies in the field of mineral processing.

Blast designs can have productive and non-productive impacts on downstream stages, mine productivity and operating costs. On the other hand, ground vibration, fragmentation, and back break caused by blasting impose damage and financial penalties and which must be controlled by blast design. One of the significant variables in blast design is the burden. In this study, the potentials of artificial neural network are investigated in prediction of burden in the Sungun copper open-pit mine. Input data were assembled through 18 blasting blocks according to different levels and experimental geomechanical investigation. To construct the model blastability index, uniaxial compression strength, hole diameter, specific weight of rock, rock quality designation and cohesion strength are taken as input parameters, whereas, burden is considered as an output parameter. Mean square error was used as the performance function and back propagation algorithm as the training function, containing four hidden layers and 14 data sets. Four sets of data were used to make sure that correct training had been carried out. This produced the coefficient correlation of 0.662.

The raw material handling complex at the Durgapur steel plant provides iron ore, crushed coke and flux to two sinter plants. Either some facilities were not envisaged or not properly designed before the project stage which caused problems during operation of the plant. The absence of an in situ roll turning facility, used to increase maintenance activities for disassembly, transportation of rolls to central machine shop and assembly of rolls, led to decreased crusher availability and increased activities for the maintenance crew. The provision of a smaller vibro feeder/screen in place of a suitable sized screen caused jamming of the screen deck, adversely affecting screening efficiency and the crushing index of crushed coke. Some design modifications and developmental work was undertaken, such as the development and installation of an in situ roll turning facility in the existing limited space, achieving low feed (0.1 - 0.2 mm/rev), lower cutting speed of 30 - 40 m/minute for 350 BHN hard roll, which was also a difficult engineering challenge to bring within the tolerable limit of vibration. This was successfully achieved. Modifications to the screen deck, introduction of differential speed crushing and modification to the vibro screen and vibro feeder for uniform distribution of feed have been incorporated. These innovative design modifications to the in situ roll turning have led to a drastic decrease in maintenance activities and an improvement in the crushing index. Modifications to the screen have resulted in the elimination of jamming and improved screening. Modifications to the vibro screen before the primary crushers and to the vibro feeder before the secondary crushers have prevented excessive wear in the central portion of rolls, ultimately leading to increased roll life. Incorporation of differential speed crushing has resulted in an increased crushing index and decreased generation of micro fines. All the above modifications have led to distinct improvements in equipment availability, increased roll life and a decrease in maintenance activities and improvement in crushed coke granulametry, ultimately resulting in improved productivity and quality of iron ore agglomeration at the sinter plant. The innovative design modifications mentioned above are discussed in detail in this paper.

"Morro do Ouro Mine is a high tonnage/low-grade mine located in Paracatu, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The mines move around 55 Mt of ore per year at an average grade of 0.4 g/t. The auriferous mineralisation of Morro do Ouro is related to hydrothermal fluids rich in arsenic (As), gold (Au), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn). These percolated along favourable structures contained within phyllites of Upper Proterozoic age and defined a mineralised megaboudin which outcropped with 4 km extension and up to 2 km in width. The litologies in the interior of this structure are typically more deformed, sericitised and sulfidised, and exhibit the development of quartz boudins in the centre of the more deformed zones where are found the higher Au grades and the coarser sulfide crystals. Gold is preferentially associated with arsenopyrite, mainly occurring in fractures or aggregations of crystals and is rarely in solid solution or refractory. Over 90 per cent of the gold contained in the sulfide ore is free or extractable by cyanidisation. The current mineral reserve is 17.9 Mt at 0.403 g/t published at the end of 2012.In order to get a good grade estimation that represents the orebody more accurately a solids methodology was used to distinguish the different orebodies. Before 2011 the orebodies were worked with two domains relating to the weathered mantle. The B1 ore, which is oxidised, is located at the top of mineralisation, and is used to feed Plant 1. Underneath B2 ore, which is fresh sulfide bearing, represents over 30 years of production in Plant 2.In order to improve the predictability of gold grade estimation in geological modelling and to get a better predicting behaviour of each domain on the deposit, studies were carried out in which it was possible to show a correlation between elements and the mineralisation. One strong correlation and spatial distribution between Au and As, As and sulfur (S), Au and Pb, Au and Zn were found.Based on geochemistry, mineral correlations, amount of sulfide, structural deformation, texture of sulfides and the daily experience of the mine, it was possible to create solids that individualised bodies with similar mineralogical and chemical characteristics using the parameters listed above.After 2011, a new modelling concept was proposed and built with 11 different domains, compared with the previous, and with two more parameters: recovery acid neutralised capacity (ANC).Each of these bodies have different behaviours in mineral processing, like flotation and metallurgy. For example, bodies with pyrrhotite bring problems in the flotation, bodies with high arsenic do not recover well, bodies with high As with coarse texture have good recovery, bodies with fine texture do not have good adherence in production.In the present state of knowledge, protocols are being developed for bench testing to predict the recovery of each geochemical domain aiming to include these in the geological model for the parameter recovery.
