The carbonatite orebody in Jacupiranga is situated some 230km (140-mi) southwest of Sao Paulo and is mined by Serrana S/A de Mineragao, producing an apatite concentrate for fertilizer production and a calcite tailing for cement manufacture (see Figure 1). The orebody (Table 1) is mined by open pit and the total production is 4.5 million mt/year of carbonatite ore with a further 2.2 million mt/year of overburden. The carbonatite low-grade ore (Table 2) is fed to the concentration plant at 460 mt/h , comprising of four parallel lines of grinding, by rod mills 2.7m x 4.5m (9 x 15-ft), operating in closed circuit with hydrocyclones. The grinding circuit product is deslimed in four stages using hydrocyclones and the deslimed product is conditioned with corn starch and subsequently floated, using fatty acids as collector to, recover the apatite.

The principles of Ore Sorting in general and photometric sorting in particular are discussed with detailed reference to the Model 16 machine. The operating principles and design of the Model 16 are discussed and a case study presented to demonstrate the use of sorters to process an industrial mineral. In addition, an economic study is presented, to highlight the benefits of ore sorting, by evaluating the increased revenue that can be achieved using an ore sorter to process a particular ore body.

Prior to 1995, the smelting process at the Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation (KUCC) smelter consisted of Noranda reactors and Pierce-Smith converters. In the consideration of expansion opportunities, the existing process did not lend itself to a program geared towards processing the total output of KUCC mining and milling operations. During 1989 and 1990, a number of smelting options were evaluated. The final selection was the Outokumpu flash smelting process, coupled with the new Kennecott-Outokumpu flash converting technology. Facilities were designed and installed to process 1.0 million tonnes per year of copper concentrate, with the ability to expand to 1.2 million tonnes per year. Following the shutdown of the smelter facility utilizing the Noranda technology in May 1995, the flash smelting furnace commenced operation in June with the flash converting furnace startup following a few weeks later. The smelter has achieved design production targets and environmental goals. Current operating rates are at or above design rates for concentrate and matte processing. Emissions are lower than the permit levels and equate to less than 3.5 kg of S02 per tonne of copper. This paper outlines the design, construction, startup and the first two years of operation of the modernized KUCC smelter.

"The application of pneumatically-assisted fluidized bed flotation, specifically the ERIEZ HydroFloatTM technology, has found widespread use in non-sulphide processing (particularly phosphate, potash and coal) for the recovery of coarse particles. In gold processing, centrifugal gravity circuits and flash flotation cells are typically employed for the recovery of coarse and near-size liberated gold which tends to accumulate in recycled grinding streams due to bypass to the classifying cyclone underflow streams owing to the higher specific gravity of these gold particles. Early removal of this gold from the grinding circuits contributes toward the reduction of downstream processing losses as a result of overgrinding and particle shape deformation in the case of flotation processing, longer leach residence times in the case of extractive processing, and surface occlusions in the case of both flotation and extractive processing. Furthermore, recovery to bullion attracts higher payment terms by way of comparison to concentrate sales in the case of copper-gold concentrators. This paper assesses the application of pneumatically assisted fluidized bed flotation for the recovery of coarse liberated gold through the analysis of piloting data generated from the operation of a continuously operated 16 inch ERIEZ HydroFloatTM unit treating a sized coarse grinding circuit stream. The paper presents the stage recovery by size performance of the ERIEZ HydroFloatTM unit together with quantitative gold deportment analysis to demonstrate the efficiency with which gold was recovered during this pilot campaign and then compared to more conventional processing units – centrifugal gravity and conventional flotation.INTRODUCTION Newcrest Mining Limited (NML) has identified that an opportunity exists for improving the recovery of coarse composite particles at its current operations, both as a means for improving overall recovery and as an opportunity for early gangue rejection. As such, Newcrest Mining Limited has taken an interest in the application of pneumatically-assisted, fluidized-bed flotation i.e. ERIEZ HydroFloatTM technology. This interest dates back to 2011 with sighter testwork carried out on their Australian-held ore bodies (Kohmuench et al, 2013). Newcrest continues to assess ERIEZ HydroFloatTM potential for coarse composite recovery and, in the case of the topic of this paper, coarse gold recovery based on examples in the literature which demonstrate the efficiency of this technology in this regard (Carmona Franco et al., (2015); Miller et al., (2016); and Kohmuench et al, 2013)."

Pyrite, as the host mineral in refractory gold ores and concentrates, has been treated by pressure oxidation in sulfuric acid solutions at temperatures above 180°C to liberate gold prior to cyanidation since the 1980's. However, no data is available on the kinetics of pyrite during acid pressure oxidation over the temperature range of 180 to 230°C which is the range employed by most commercial plants. The dissolution of pyrite (FeS,) in sulfuric acid solution under oxygen pressure was investigated at temperatures ranging from 170 to 230°C. The effects of temperature, particle size, agitation speed, oxygen partial pressure, and pulp density were evaluated. The effects of foreign ion addition and the concentration of sulfuric acid were also examined. The apparent activation energy was estimated to be 42.6 kJ/mol in the temperature range 170 to 230°C. The reaction orders with respect to particle size and oxygen partial pressure were found to be -1.5 and 0.5 at 210°C, respectively. Experimental evidence suggests that the kinetics are limited by the surface chemical reaction initially, and then also to some extent by the diffusion of ferrous ions away from the particle surface.

Introduction Within the past year a new deposit of gypsum has been opened up and brought into production in the Province of Manitoba. Until 1930, Manitoba's entire production came from Gypsumville, northwest of Winnipeg, at mile 161 on the Gypsumville branch of the Canadian National railway. However, during 1930 a gypsum bed was opened up at a point one mile south of the village of Amaranth, forty miles north of Portage la Paririe, on the west side of lake Manitoba (See Figure 1). Although no exposure has yet been discovered, the presence of gypsum below the surface in that district has been known for many years as the result of drilling for water. In 1929, J. R. Spear (1), of Winnipeg, interested some local capital in the possibility of .finding commercial deposits of gypsum, and, after some exploration work in the area with a well drill, the Amaranth deposit was located. Sixteen holes were put down at intervals of 400 or 500 feet, all of which encountered what appeared to be a continuous bed of gypsum, about thirty-eight feet thick, at a depth of 92 feet. The extent of the deposit has not yet been determined.

"The diversification of energy sources in the United States has seen some major shifts during the past decade resulting from:• A sudden abundance of low-cost natural gas becoming available through advanced horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing techniques.• Incentive-driven policies leading to new development in alternative energy.• The emergence of alternative energy sources proliferated as a result of state and federal level incentives and falling capital costs.Coal was once recognized as the primary low-cost fuel source for the generation of electricity in the United States for most of the last century, providing upward of 50 percent of the total generation capacity during much of that period. However, within the past decade, lower-cost natural gas has overtaken coal as the primary source of fuel used in electricity generation, and alternative sources have steadily grown to now account for approximately 10 percent of the overall mix.West Virginia and Kentucky have not experienced the full breadth of the fuel shift, and, as of 2016, still obtained approximately 80-90 percent of electric power generation from coal. However, as coal plants are retired, there has been a shift toward natural gas for new power plants constructed in the region. The economics of power generation (i.e., lowcost fuel source) has typically been the major factor in determining shifts from one fuel source or technology to another. However, governmental energy policies and incentives have more recently been used to promote the development of new alternative technologies such as wind and solar energy growth to diversify the energy mix. The implementation of these incentives has provided some needed traction and resulted in driving the cost of manufacturing and installation of these new wind and solar systems downward to be more cost competitive with conventional fossil-fueled power sources. Future shifts in the generation capacity by fuel type will also be inevitable and impossible to project accurately as policies change and innovative technologies evolve. Determining factors may include the expiration of current incentives, decreasing capital costs, future environmental regulations, evolution of energy storage systems, technical challenges associated with increasing intermittent sources of generation and the development of unforeseen technologies. West Virginia and Kentucky have been among the least solar friendly states, ranking 44th and 48th of the 50 states (Fig. 1 for WV). You here are all familar with the myriad of new laws, some enacted and some pending, that affect the mining industry. These laws, for example those dealing with suspended matter, affect us in Alaska as they do you. Likewise, our friends in government, the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines, provide us with the same fine services that they do elsewhere. I am not going to speak today about these, but concentrate on one act of Washington, D.C. the impact of which is felt, for now at least, principally in Alaska. A little more than a year ago, I spoke in Spokane on the subject, "Governmental Challenge to Mineral Development in Alaska." I outlined some of the policies of Government which were operating to change the rules under which the industry operates and to alter the relation- ship between government, industry, and the individual. At that time the Native Claims Settlement Act had not been passed, but was on the verge of being so. In reading over what I said in Spokane, I note that I touched on many points where Government was actually challenging mineral development in Alaska. With the passage of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, many of these actions were given a cloak of legality, and machinery was set up to concentrate the drive to tie up the public domain, machinery which will allow govern- mental control and interference with the actions of individuals on something like 90% of Alaska's land surface. This remarkable law is going to affect each and every one of you. Now, a year after its passage, we are only just beginning to see its lesson for the future. It was created by a coalition of powerful groups, who got other groups to support them by promising to deliver something they had no intention of delivering. Alaskan issues are again being used to get various groups not to oppose legislation which will severely harm them. It will help to understand the nature of this new drive if we understand the Native Claims Act and how it came into being.

Each year, thousands of tons of toxic concentrates are produced as the unwanted byproducts of industrial operations and smelting activities. The fate of these materials remains open, as in general their consumption is limited and potential markets contracting. Xtaltite (pronounced crystal-tight) is a Synthetic Mineral Immobilization Technology (SMITE) optimized for the concentration, detoxification and consolidation of toxic metal wastes. In this approach, we seek to mimic nature to produce durable synthetic minerals that survive for aeons in well characterized geological settings. This approach has high public acceptability because the concept is easily understood by the layperson and the long term stability of the waste form may be predicted with confidence. In addition, where Xtaltite is used for mine backfill, a system of ecologically sustainable mining development is established. This paper details the design and fabrication of Xtaltite under oxidizing and reducing conditions. To illustrate and contrast these stabilization regimes, specific reference will be made to the treatment of thallium, chrom~um and arsenic wastes. Waste form performance under TCLP, dynamic boiling water tests and in other leaching media will be compared and discussed with respect to their relevance to different disposal options.

"Borehole permeability tests that measure flow or head changes in boreholes located within seepage barrier walls are commonly used to estimate the in situ permeabilities of those walls for quality control and assurance. The current state of practice for estimating permeabilities from these barrier wall borehole tests is to use equations published by M. J. Hvorslev in 1951. Hvorslev’s borehole test equations model an infinite stratum of uniform permeability, which is not the actual condition for a test performed in a low permeability barrier wall located within a high permeability stratum. We examine and develop alternative equations based on line source analytical models, which more closely match barrier wall test conditions. We describe how these alternate equations can be used to estimate barrier wall permeabilities from borehole tests and compare the results to those obtained from the Hvorslev models. We also provide recommendations that consider differing upstream and downstream water levels.Barrier Wall Permeability Tests - State Of PracticeThe installation of seepage barrier walls has become more common in a variety of applications ranging from dams and levees to contaminated sites requiring retardation of groundwater flow. The types of seepage barrier walls and installation methods include soil-bentonite, soil-cement-bentonite, concrete, self-hardening slurry, geomembranes, and sheet piles, installed with various soil mixing, slurry-supported trench, and driving methods.Owners and contractors have used a variety of methods to evaluate the permeability of these seepage barriers. The following table lists commonly used quality control/assurance tests for evaluating the permeability of a seepage barrier."

Stoppings are necessary ventilation control devices for effective air distribution underground. However, one of the major problems underground mining has is that every stopping is a potential leaking source. Since air always flows from a point of high pressure to one of lower pressure, and the total pressure at every point in intake airways is higher than that in the return airways, air will always tend to leak from intake to return (Tien, 1996). In many mines, less than half of the air entering the mine actually gets to the working areas; the rest of it simply short-circuits directly to return airways through leaky stoppings instead (Timko and Thimons, 1983). Leakage through a stopping occurs because of pressure drops across the stopping and available leaky path in stoppings. Empirical equation has been widely used to characterize the relation the amount of leakage and variables that affect leakage. However the use of this equation requires accurate information for constants which are not always readily available. It is the attempt of this paper to derive an equation similar to the Atkinson Equation that can readily be applied to characterize pressure-leakage relationship for any given stopping.

Natural chromite mineral is a solid solution of spinet end members namely: chromite (FeCr2O4), hercynite (FeA1204), magnetite (Fe3O4), magnesio-chromite (MgCr2O4), (MgA12O4), and magnesio-ferrite (MgFe2O4). A phase transformation in chromite minerals occurs in oxidising conditions during the soda-ash roasting reaction. This phase transformation plays an important role in improving the extraction efficiency of Cr3+ from mineral phase. The extraction efficiency of chromium (Cr3+) from chromite to a water¬soluble sodium chromate (Cr6+) salt depends upon the decomposition kinetics of the spinet phase. An investigation of the phase changes in chromite ores in the absence of sodium carbonate was carried out in air, argon, and in argon +5 % hydrogen gas mixture. The thermodynamics of phase transformation reaction in chromite solid solution phase is discussed using the solution model proposed by Sack and Ghiorso [1]. The microstructural changes and the changes in elemental compositions of different phases were examined by SEM and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) respectively. The experimental results indicate that the solid solution spinet phase in chromite mineral undergoes spinodal decomposition under the influence of oxygen partial pressure and temperatures. The structure of phases formed and their morphologies suggest that the phase decomposition may be similar to those observed by Burkert et. a]. 121, although the scale of phase separation in chromite appears to be strongly dependent on oxygen partial pressure.

Water treatment is not æcore businessÆ for mining companies.Just as mineral ores and coals are unique, each requiring detailed characterisation and pilot-testing to determine their optimum beneficiation route, so too are mine waters, each requiring careful assessment to determine the most appropriate treatment. There are many cases of æregret capitalÆ expenditure, whereby mines have installed off-the-shelf equipment only to find it inadequate for their purposes or grossly expensive and labour intensive to operate.Water may be required for potable purposes, ore processing, dust control and/or irrigation. A major driver will frequently be environmental constraints for off-site discharge. Mine water projects can become very complex, and detailed models need to be prepared and optimised to properly consider the raw water sources, the on-site storages, the on-site uses and the off-site discharges, as well as handling the residuals (by-products) of water treatment. By-products may be in the form of concentrated backwash streams or streams of elevated salt content. Careful management of the by-products is required to avoid recontamination of the source water.Regulators often drive mine owners toward reverse osmosis (RO) so that their discharges can be considered as æzero dischargeÆ in terms of potential pollutants. Such decisions need to be based on site-specific information rather than any form of æblanketÆ requirement. An analogy is that many humans like to consume mineral water rather than ænormalÆ tap water. Receiving environments also accommodate or even prefer their æmineralsÆ and so RO is neither warranted nor sustainable in many cases.This paper presents two case studies for operating mine sites, both of which have a significant excess of water requiring environmental discharge. The examples demonstrate a sensible balance between treatment type, environmental constraints, process implementation and residuals management. The underground research presented in this paper was carried out in the two Polish copper mines: Rudna and Polkowice-Sieroszowice. The aim of the research was to determine stress field parameters. The measurement method and measuring positions are described as well as the measuring technique adapted to the geological and mining conditions of the Rudna mine and the Polkowice-Sieroszowice mine. The identified values and directions of principal stresses and horizontal stresses and their importance for optimization of mining operation and safety improvement are discussed.

"The tests described below were conducted by the Bureau of Mines at a lease in Oklahoma on installations designed to decrease evaporation losses of crude oil Pram storage tanks. Use of the lease was granted by the Oklahoma Producing and Refining Corporation of America. Tankage was obtained through the courtesy of the Parkensburg Pig and Reel Co. The purpose of the installations and tests was to demonstrate the value of making crude-oil storage tanks gas-tight, rather than to determine the amount of evaporation in any one type of tank. None of the tanks used were absolutely gas-tight, but one of them was very nearly so. They comprised a tank of the ordinary open type with an 18-inch manhole, a tank with a ""4-inch vent"", a tank with a ""smaller vent"", and a tank which had only ""pin holes"" through which air and vapor could pass freely. On the last two tanks any excess pressure was taken care of by an automatic differential pressure regulator.The results obtained in these tests indicate that tight tankage will soon pay for itself. They will not, however, serve as a basis on which a producer can compute the actual number of days necessary for tight tankage to pay out, because the oil used was exceptionally volatile. It is probable that the average evaporation loss in the Mid-Continent field is at least one-half as great as that shown by these tests, and if this is true, the saving that would be effected by providing tight tankage on the lease will undoubtedly justify the expense. The installation of evaporation-proof tanks on the lease has been delayed by the failure of production managers to realize, first, that their evaporation losses are enormous, and, second, that they can practically eliminate these losses by a simple and inexpensive installation."

Large volume sand plugs are placed in tunnels to stem underground explosions at the Atomic Energy Commision's Nevada Test Site. Placement through long, narrow accessways is like stemming coyote holes and blast chambers in mining and construction. Experience with several other methods showed that pipeline conveying could be preferable. Small scale tests justified predicting a placement rate of 20 y. p. h. at 1000 feet, with a modified gunite placer. The initial production trial placed over 2000 c. y. and was estimated to effect a small cost saving after paying for new equipment. Initial problems included duct replacement and supply delays, dust, and other personnel hazards. Operations analysis and SOP'S reduced delays during the second field trial, minimized hazards, doubled production. Re cent re search and operations analyses produced data on abrasion resistant ducts, identified minor equipment modifications which can improve production, developed techniques for impact compaction to 90% ?maximum? and for extension of the practical range to 2000 feet. Twenty-two illustrations include an air consumption-distance chart.

A relatively simple model of grinding which incorporates both the Bond grindability equations and the population balance equations has been extended to form a comprehensive simulation package that can describe most kinds of conventional grinding circuits. The package has two programs, with the first consisting of an input program which helps the user to specify the prescribed circuit, while the second program performs the actual simulation. The package serves two main purposes - i) as a check on mill design, with the output providing not only predictions for the product passing size but also of the full product size distribution, and ii) as a means to assess the likely effects on the product size distribution of operating under different sets of conditions.

"The Margules equation is used for interpreting excess Gibbs energy of several ternary systems. In the present study activity coefficient of a dilute solute, 2, in a binary solvent 1-3 was derived. The derived expression is used to interpret logarithmic activity coefficient of oxygen and sulfur in several metallic systems. Self interaction parameter of the solute is derived from the partial function of solute using constant compositional path. An expression for logarithmic activity coefficient and self - interaction parameter of solute is also derived using Maclaurin infinite series. The derived equation is based on Maclaurin infinite series used successfully to deduce thermodynamics of self interaction of oxygen as a interstitial atom in two metallic systems. The predicted thermodynamic parameters values using Maclaurin infinite series and Margules equations, are in excellent agreement with the experimental data and also our predictions are far more accurate than the predictions made by other models.1 IntroductionIn most of the pyrometallurgical high temperatures processes, interactions of solutes such as oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur, with the solvent atoms are most important during refining processes. There are numerous theories are developed [1-25] to interpret the thermodynamics of solutes in multicomponent alloy systems. Which are mainly developed using statistical or Quasichemical equations.Wagner [4] developed one energy parameter ideal solvent model based on activity coefficient of solutes compositional dependency. He used one energy interaction term which is not able to account for interaction energy parameters for the same solute concentration at different solvent compositions and also it is ineffective model to predict for strong interacting systems."

The probability of detachment of quartz particles from air bubbles during bubble oscillations was investigated by means of a vibration method. Theoretical calculations of the detachment force based on the work of Nutt and Schulze for a single spherical particle show a correlation with the experimental results described. However, the forces that were determined experimentally were considerably lower than the theoretically derived values. Some of the factors which were expected to affect the probability of detachment, such as particle size, bubble size, collector concentration and vibrational acceleration, were also investigated
