Processing nonmagnetic taconites by selective flocculation-desliming and flotation requires large volumes of water. If impounded without treatment these off-process waters require excessively large areas for containment. To discharge the waste water into natural waterways would contribute to stream pollution and likely would not be permitted. In Bureau of Mines experiments conducted in the Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center&apos;s 900-lb/hr pilot plant, approximately 85 percent of water requirements for the flotation-based treatment of a Michigan nonmagnetic taconite were met by reclaimed water. Water reclamation of the off-process streams from flotation was accomplished by controlled additions of lime, sodium carbonate, and a synthetic flocculant to reduce turbidities to <1,000 ppm equivalent Si02, while maintaining a Ca(II) content of 516 ppm in the finished effluent. Flotation concentrates of good quality were obtained using the reclaimed water. The cost of chemicals used in water reclamation was approximately equal to the savings in flotation reagents attributed to recycling of the water.

Following the gold discoveries of the late 1800&apos;s much was written regarding the vast mineral resources of Alaska, and much interest was aroused, and yet over the years little has been done to exploit those resources. Between 1906 and 1935 the Kennecott copper mines of the Copper River region were the keystone of the mineral economy (fig, 1). After the depletion of the Kennecott ore reserves and aided by the statutory rise in the price of gold, the yellow metal became the major mineral commodity. In recent years it has shared the honors with coal and sand and gravel. Although this trend should indicate the development of a stable, diversified mineral industry, yet the trend of production is downward. This report results from a study by the Federal Bureau of Mines to delineate the problems and to forecast the growth of the mineral industries in Alaska. The need for such a blueprint for the future was enhanced by the population explosion in the United States and the consequent eventual need for additional living space, as well as the current interest in new areas, and the necessity to develop reserves of strategic minerals.

DR . JOHN A . CHURCH, in his treatise on the Comstock Locle 1 gave a full and clear account of the conditions of the mine during the period of greatest activity. The difficulties in the way of deep mining at that time were excessive water and high temperature. The drainage of the mines taxed the financial resources of the mining companies, and the high temperatures restricted the capacity of the miners for underground labor. In spite of these difficulties exploratory work was continued until the financial burden of removing the water became too great. The companies then restricted the work to the upper levels. The years 1883 to 1886 marked the period of cessation of deep mining. For 12 years thereafter mining was confined to the levels above the Sutro tunnel; and, while the question of drainage was more or less agitated, nothing of importance was done until the formation of the Comstock Pumping Association in 1898. Since that time successive levels have been drained until, at present, on the north-end mines, a depth of 700 ft. below the Sutro-tunnel level has been reached. Mining is now carried on in the Ophir mine from the 1,700- to the 2,200-ft. levels, and a winze is being sunk to make connection with the 2,300-ft. level (the 2,450 ft. of the C. & C. shaft). In 1903-the Ward Shaft Association was formed to undertake the draining of the Central and Gold Hill group of mines, and at the present time a depth of 2,500 ft. has been reached in the Ward shaft. The situation at the Ward looks promis¬ing, and the 3,000-ft. level may be reached in the near future. It is proposed to establish a large pumping-station on this level, and then begin the opening of known ore-bodies and the prospecting for new ones. The main factors which have contributed to the successful solution of the drainage problem are the Sutro tunnel, the use of the hydraulic elevator as a sinking-pump, the concentration of pumping-units, and cheap electrical power. The question of high temperature and its control still remains as a minor but important problem. The temperatures encountered in the new workings are as great as those in the earlier periods. The Comstock was considered the hottest group of mines in the world, and I am not aware of similar conditions in any other mining-district. A water-temperature as high as 160° F. has been reported from the Ward shaft, and temperatures below the Sutro tunnel are very high in many instances.

The Duluth Gabbro Complex in Northeastern Minnesota possibly contains a significant domestic copper resource and the nation&apos;s largest nickel resource. Exploration has discovered large low-grade copper-nickel (Cu-Ni) deposits between Hoyt Lakes and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA). The mining and processing of Cu-Ni will have environmental, economic, and social impacts. The purpose of this study is to relate major environmental, economic, and social considerations to various aspects of Cu-Ni extraction. An open pit and two underground (block caving and open stoping with backfilling) models were developed to generate information on the impact of Cu-Ni extraction. Important considerations having environmental, economic, and social impacts (luring various aspects of Cu-Ni extraction are identified and defined. These aspects are exploration, development, mining, beneficiating, smelting, transportation, and termination of operations. Considerations are grouped into the general categories of site, industrial, energy, climatic, resource, water, air emission, waste disposal, employee, tax and royalty, transportation, and community considerations. Cu-Ni extraction in Northeastern Minnesota presents major environmental, economic, and social risks. Decisions are required on trade-offs between adverse and beneficial impacts. The approach used in this study assists in assessing environmental, economic, and social impacts. It will aid in the examination of potential and projected short-term and long-term advantages and disadvantages and will aid in the development of Minnesota&apos;s Cu-Ni resource for the maximum benefit to society.

Introduction The Siscoe gold mine is the most easterly producer of gold from deposits lying in the belt of Keewatin and Timiskaniing rocks which extends east from Kirkland Lake, Ontario, and on through the Rouyn copper area. Unlike many of the deposits in this belt, those of Siscoe are contained almost entirely in a stock of much-altered granodiorite which intrudes Keewatin lavas. They are situated on an island of about one square mile in area, lying in lake De Montigny, Dubuisson township, 40 miles south of Amos, on the Transcontinental branch of the Canadian National railways, and 52 miles east, and slightly south, of Noranda. Geographically, the deposits are favour-ably situated with respect to transportation facilities, a through water-route being available from Amos, along the Harricana river and its lake expansions. The deposits consist of auriferous quartz-tourmaline veins of the fissure-filled type and are of particular interest because of their geological structure and genesis. Furthermore, deposits of a similar type occur both in the Keewatin and in granodiorite bodies to the east, in Dubuisson, Bourlamaque, Pascalis, and Louvicourt townships, and it is hoped that the following discussion may be of some aid in the exploration work now being carried on throughout this general area.

COAL companies are definitely becoming conscious of the need for better organization. Mechanized mining and the intricate preparation of coal have brought with them the demand for better trained and more highly skilled mining personnel. Refinement in coal mine management is increasing the demand for young graduate engineers to start in the lower grades of the reorganization and prepare themselves to meet rapidly increasing coal mining responsibilities. The interest is wide in scope and extends from self-helps, extension work, and management study at the mines to stimulation of interest in coal mining amongst undergraduate mining students, leading to their permanent employment after graduation. Data by the United States Bureau of Mines show the total annual value of coal production (bituminous and anthracite in the U.S.) through the past 22 years as being more than 38 per cent of the combined value of all ocher mineral industry products. Natural-gas production has gained rapidly on coal since 1916; petroleum exceeded coal beginning with 1934 (see Figure 1). For this 22-year period, the Committee on Student Interest in Coal Mining, in the A.I.M.E., made a survey of the mining schools in Canada and the United States to show the approximate absorption of young graduate mining engineers by the coal industry. In 1938, 232 mining engineers were graduated as compared with 42 in 1918 (a war year) and 180 in 1923. From 1923 to 1929 the graduates declined to another low of 90, but from there on there was a rapid annual increase in the graduating output, reaching a total of 232 in 1938 and continuing upward to a maximum of over 325 graduating this present month.

Laboratory experiments were conducted to study the carbon deposition characteristics of a high-gravity, paraffin-base crude oil. The results of these experiments indicate that a fuel supply adequate to initiate a combustion wave can be deposited in high-gravity-oil reservoirs. These results are significant because there has been considerable doubt whether oils over 35° API gravity are able to deposit sufficient fuel. Considered in these studies were the effects of air flux, temperature, initial oil saturation, and time on carbon deposition. Conditions that maximized carbon deposition in the laboratory and an understanding of the nature of carbon formation are shown by graphical interpretation of the data. Statistical techniques were used to design and analyze the results of the retort tests. For the same amount of laboratory work, this approach yields more information about the systems that were studied than the classical method of research presently used in many laboratories. In addition, the accuracy of calculating the effect of each variable on carbon deposition is twice that of the classical approach. This paper develops the statistical approach to research without complex mathematics, thus enabling the reader to grasp the concept of how statistics can be applied to study many complicated problems.

Production of traprock occupies an important place in industry. In 1960 the output in the form of crushed stone reached nearly 58 million tons valued at $87 million. Traprocks are also shaped into blocks of dimension stone for monuments, building construction and decoration, and specialized products such as surface plates.

"Mineral endowment in northern British Columbia and the Yukon Territory was assessed on the basis of geological opinion which was gathered in a quantitative framework of subjective probabilities. The survey area encompassed 364,000 square miles and was divided into 310 cells having dimensions of one degree of longitude by one-half degree of latitude. The response solicited related to tonnage, grade and number of deposits of a particular mineral in each cell. The questionnaire sought an expression of mineral endowment down to mine-able depth as distinct from economic expectations. Details on the questionnaire and responses are presented in a series of contour maps on individual commooities, which illustrate the collective occurrence picture of the respondents. The approach is largely dependent on the cooperation of an adequate number of geologists familiar with the region being examined. This approach to an assessment of the mineral endowment of a region has a wide range of applicability, from the focusing of exploration effort to aiding government and development bodies in the formulation of regional strategies and the planning, for example, of road, rail and power facilities."

Over the decades, mine and mineral processing plant operations for the most part, have been found to have had adverse impacts on the environment. At the same time, mineral processing and mining operations produce mineral products that are indispensable to modern society. Thus, the sector has desirable and undesirable attributes simultaneously. The situation presents itself as a contradiction (i.e.) the mineral processing and mining operations are wanted by society, and at the same time unwanted by society. The existing methods of addressing the issues raised above have evidently not been very successful in reducing the opposition to new projects and to the related activities such as land acquisition. This paper attempts to show the relevance and applicability of TRIZ for addressing the issue. TRIZ, or Teoriya Rezheniya Isobretatelski Zadach, is a Russian acronym meaning Theory of Inventive Problem Solving. TRIZ is a powerful tool that can be usefully applied to resolve such contradictions, using resources usually available within the system of interest. Accordingly, this paper introduces the issue background, followed by an introduction to some key concepts of TRIZ such as the 40 principles, separation principles and directed evolution. The paper goes on to apply the 40 principles to two case studies. The results show that TRIZ could be a useful tool to generate potentially innovative and sustainable approaches. Its most appropriate position would be as a supplement to current decision-making procedures, and as a validation tool to review existing solutions for possible improvements. The generation of low cost power is but one phase of the TVA program for regional development. During the 36 years since TVA began, growth in its generation of electric power has necessitated a shift from a predominantly hydroelectric power system to a combination steam and hydroelectric system. The addition of steam-electric power plants to TVA&apos;s generating system was necessitated by the rapid increase in the traditional and defense demands for electric power in the 80,000-square-mile area served by TVA, the need to firm up the hydroelectric power, and the fact that all available sites for sizeable hydroelectric projects had been developed. At present TVA owns and operates 40 power plants--29 hydroelectric and 11 steam-electric plants. The total generating capacity of the hydroelectric plants is 3,105,430 kw, and the capacity of the steam plants is 13,951,135 kw. This provides a total generating capacity of 17,056,565 kw for the plants operated by TVA. Individual capacity of the 112 hydroelectric units ranges from 10,000 to 67,500 kw, and the individual capacity of the steam-electric units now in operation ranges from 60,000 to 950,000 kw. In addition to this generating capacity, TVA distributes the power from 6 U. S. Army Corps of Engineers hydroelectric plants on the Cumberland River. These plants contribute an additional 725,000 kw. Also, under an agreement with the Aluminum Company of America, TVA directs the stream flows and generation of their 423,715-kw system on Tennessee River tributaries and shares with Alcoa in the increased generation resulting from this coordinated operation.

In this work, bioleaching of non-sulphidic materials by applying chemoheterotrophic bacteria and fungi is studied. It was found that the tested fungus, Aspergillus niger, leached substantially more nickel from olivine than the tested bacterium, Bacillus mucilaginosus. A. niger also outperformed fungal species Humicola grisae and Penicillium chrysogenum in the leaching of olivine. Contrary to traditional acid leaching, the microorganisms leached nickel preferentially over magnesium and iron. On average, a selectivity factor of 2.2 was achieved for nickel compared to iron. This can potentially facilitate postprocessing of the leach liquor and reduce the cost. The impact of ultrasonic conditioning on bioleaching was also tested, and substantial increase in nickel extraction with A. niger was observed. This was credited to an increase in the fungal growth rate, the promotion of particle degradation, and the detachment of the stagnant biofilm around the particles. Furthermore, ultrasonic conditioning enhanced the selectivity of A. niger for nickel, resulting in a selectivity ratio for Ni/Fe equal to 3.5. The chemical resistance of the selected microorganisms to several heavy metal and metalloid (As(III,V), Cd, Cr(III,V), Ni, Pb, Zn) was evaluated. It was found that, with the exception of As(v) and Cd, A. niger has high tolerance to these components. Therefore, this biohydrometallurgical route can potentially be applied to non-sulphidic wastederived materials, such as industrial slags, ashes and sludges.

A risk-robust development of a heavy mineral resource requires an assessment of the geological uncertainty and spatial variability of the key factors impacting the mining and processing operation. Attributes of interest are the total heavy mineral grade, the slime content and the amount of oversized particles. The modelling of a mineral sand deposit presents two main challenges. Firstly, the exact location of the geological boundaries are obscure due to the complex interaction of the deposit formation processes. Secondly, the properties of interest exhibit a rather complex transitional behaviour across the so-called soft boundaries. Traditionally, the modelling exercise is restricted to a consecutive stochastic simulation of distinct geological facies and orebody properties. This results in different zones separated by hard boundaries, ignoring the typical transitional behaviour.This contribution presents an alternative approach which models the entire sand body as a single domain while accounting for the complex trends present. Error curves are used to infer covariance model parameters without the need of a prior removal of the trend. The principle is based on minimising the differences between empirical and theoretical errors resulting from two methods of prediction calculated for different rings of influence. The added value results from the unambiguous decomposition of the spatial variation into a deterministic trend and a stochastic residual. The trend model neither overfits nor underfits the data. The calculated residuals are thus unbiased and the uncertainty can be correctly assessed.The effort results in a characterisation of the resource uncertainty which provides a more realistic image of the spatial variability of the key properties in and across the geological domains of an existing heavy mineral sand deposit.CITATION:Wambeke, T and Benndorf, J, 2014. The employment of continuous rotary vacuum disc filters to filter refuse from the fine coal washing circuits has been increasing as it has become more important to close the water circuits and eliminate sludge holding ponds. This paper will discuss our past experience filtering refuse, effects of solids concentration in the filter feed, use of polymer flocculation aids, effect of flocculation devices, and effects of particle size and ash content on the filtration rate. Detailed tests were performed on existing installations utilizing coal refuse filters to determine optimum flocculant dosage, solids concentration, and disc rotation speed to form a dischargeable cake. Information was also obtained showing effect of flocculant addition on the moisture of the filter cake. Our test work has shown that the continuous filtration dry cake rates for fine coal refuse correlates very well with the data developed and presented by Silverblatt and Dahlstrom1 except that the curves have moved up the scale by use of polymer flocculant additions. These polymers were not available at that writing. Finally, our tests also confirmed the general premise stated by S. K. Mishra2 that controlled additions of polymer flocculants will reduce filter refuse cake moistures somewhat.

An earlier paper1 introduced a rapid solution for mine ventilation network problems, employing the digital computer. In this paper, refinements and additions to the computer program which expand its scope of application and a solution to a ventilation network having a coal-mine configuration are presented. Specifically, the revised program--written in FORTRAN for the IBM 7074 computer in Penn State&apos;s Computation Center--is applicable to any mine ventilation network employing natural splitting and having its fan located externally. It accomplishes the following; 1. Distributes an assumed total quantity of air flow among all air- ways of the network, performing iterations until an acceptable level of error is attained and the flow in each airway is known. 2, Computes the pressure drop (head loss) in all airways and the overall network and mine head losses. 3. Determines the operating point for the mine and a given fan, adjusting all air flows and head losses to the actual values.

Anglovaal Minerals acquired the Nkana slag dump from Zambia Consolidated Copper mines (ZCCM) in 1998 and embarked on an ambitious project to pioneer the recovery of cobalt from slag using DC smelting technology. Anglovaal Research Laboratories performed initial pioneering smelting tests in a 250 kW DC furnace over a 3-year period before engaging Mintek for three piloting campaigns at the 1.5 MW level. Mintek had previously developed a reductive smelting process, patented in 1995, using a DC arc furnace for the recovery of cobalt from slags. The results of the pilot-plant test campaigns were used as the basis for engineering the commercial 40 MW operation installed at Chambishi Metals plc in Zambia in 2001. This paper traces the development of understanding of the metallurgical fundamentals ultimately used to predict furnace performance, reviews some of the extreme technical challenges faced, how solutions were identified and highlights some of the critical issues identified during piloting and how these impacted both positively and negatively on the final commercial operation.

"Production of industrial minerals remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. In 2014, 226 active mines and mills were registered in New Mexico and included four coal, eight potash, 11 metal, 33 industrial mineral and 170 aggregate and stone operations. New Mexico leads U.S. domestic production of potash, perlite, zeolite and travertine. Other production includes aggregate, humate, pumice, gypsum, salt, common and fire clay, scoria, limestone, fly ash, cement, magnetite, silica and decorative stone. New Mexico also has the potential for additional production of industrial minerals. One company is exploring for garnet. Cretaceous black sandstones in the San Juan Basin have drawn interest for titanium, rare earth elements (REEs), niobium and zircon, and other REE deposits are being explored. REE-thoriumuranium veins have been found in the Gallinas, Capitan and Cornudas Mountains and Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills. Exploration for beryllium has occurred in the Ojo Caliente No. 2, Cuchillo Negro and Victorio mining districts. Companies also are examining high-calcium limestone and high-magnesium dolomite for potential development, while aggregate continues to be important in urban areas and along highways. IntroductionIndustrial minerals and rocks are literally the building blocks of our way of life. They are an exceptionally diverse and vital group of raw materials that underpin almost all aspects of human activity, infrastructure and standard of living. Industrial minerals and rocks are used in the manufacture of many products, from ceramics to plastics to refractories to paper. Although industrial minerals permeate nearly every aspect of daily life, their presence and their roles are typically invisible. A widely used definition of industrial minerals and rocks is “any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metal ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones: one of the nonmetallics” (Bates, 1975). This definition includes the important construction materials sector as well as specialized industrial minerals, but complex interactions between consumer industries produce a number of apparent anomalies to this definition. Some metals are included as industrial minerals because their use is industrial rather than as a metal. Sulfur is now predominantly extracted as a byproduct of cleaning natural gas, one of the world’s major energy fuels.Production of industrial minerals has been and remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. Industrial minerals constitute nearly 41 percent of the more than $3.1 billion generated by mineral production in New Mexico in 2014 (Table 1). Ilmenite concentrates prepared from beach and dune sands of Florida, India, Australia, and other localities deviate to varying degrees from the theoretical composition of pure ilmenite, and generally contain more Ti02 than the formula FeTiO3 would indicate, and some Fe203. This variation in composition is due to different amounts of altered ilmenite in the concentrates.(l) The alteration has been shown to take place by oxidation and leaching of the iron in ilmenite, to yield residual products consisting of amorphous or very finely crystalline titanium dioxide and ferric oxide, Other studies (2) have stressed that ilmenite may alter first to an amorphous titanium-iron oxide, or to an amorphous mixture of titanium and iron oxides, with later alteration to crystalline titanium dioxide. There has been some speculation as to whether alteration of ilmenite is usually caused by weathering or by hydrothermal processes,(3, 4, 5) Three main methods of approach were used to study the mechanism and rate of ilmenite weathering, (1) Etch tests were used to learn the relationship between crystallographic orientation and the rate of chemical attack on ilmenite. (2) Altered ilmenites in New Jersey sands were compared with ilmenite in rocks of the area from which the sands were probably derived, (3) Experiments were carried out to determine at what rate, and by what agents, originally fresh ilmenite could be altered in the laboratory under simulated weathering conditions.
