AT the last meeting of the Institute, a discussion arose upon the question, " Is them pressure in coke ovens ?" and many of the members seemed to think that the superiority of the Belgian furnace might be due to the fact that it is a completely closed chamber, in which the gases given off by the coal are, or may be, at more than the atmospheric pressure. It seems to me that this position is untenable, and that an examination of one of these ovens in operation will show, not only that there is no excess of pressure in the coke chamber, but that the contrary is true, and a partial vacuum exists. The Belgian or François oven consists of a rectangular chamber closed at the ends by sliding doors, and furnished with flues in the side walls and floor. The new charge is introduced at a time when the furnace is so hot as to cause immediate and copious discharge of the volatile constituents of the coal. The gases pass downwards through the side flues giving out their heat to the walls and thus to the coal. Underneath the floor air is introduced and the gases burn, producing intense heat. Heat is also reflected from the arched roof upon the coal which is therefore heated from all sides. The especial advantage which this construction was designed to secure is that no air is admitted to the coke-chamber. All the heat is produced by the combustion of the uncokeable gases, and the yield ought to be a maximum. It is so in fact, allowing for the imperfections inseparable from furnace construction and management. Sometimes the yield is in excess of the percentage indicated by assay, showing that

SCHLESINGER,* Denver, Colo.-Two problems are of great interest to the radium manufacturer at the present tine: The first is to perfect a process, more efficient and more economical, which is capable of treating a greater variety of ores. . Practically all the radium now manufactured in the United States is extracted from carnotite ores and these vary a great deal according to their location. The amount of sulfates contained in the ore is of particular importance, and any straight acid-leaching method, such as developed by the Bureau of Mines, becomes prohibitive when the ore contains more than 0.5 per cent. of sulfates, as the sulfates go into solution and naturally precipitate the radium as insoluble radium sulfate. Since the amount of ore obtained from any one claim is usually comparatively small, it is necessary to work a number of claims in different localities, and a process, in order to be commercially satisfactory, should handle all of these ores. In other words, it would be entirely unprofitable for radium manufacturers to employ any process which cannot treat any but sulfate-free ores. He must deal with carnotite containing appreciable amounts of sulfates, and must be able to work this in with the other ores. Carbonaceous ores from certain sections in Utah; which are known to contain as pinch as 1.0 per cent. and more of volatile matters, are prone to a, nitric acid-leaching process. The second problem relates to the treatment of concentrates. There is no doubt that a very large amount of low-grade ore, containing less than 0.75 per cent. uranium oxide, is available. MR. DICKINSON: There is an increase of dust in machine loading, especially with the McKinlay loading and cutting machine which was extremely dusty. MR. FORRESTER: Declared more dust must be expected because when loading by machinery, the coal is shot harder in order to make it easier for the machine to pick it up. He believes however, that there was less hazard because of the closer supervision possible by reason of the concentration of operation. MR. McAULIFFE: Machine loading more dusty than hand loading. D. HARRINGTON: The hazard is greatly increased by modern methods of loading. Not only do the methods increase the quantity of dust, but they also increase the rapidity of mining and the increased quantity of coal broken down causes large quantities of gas to be released. The number of motors on loading machines and conveyors add to the hazard. No more dangerous places can be found for such motors than at the working face where there is excessive quantities of pure coal dust and where there is more gas than along any other point. Regarding Mr. Herres remarks that the machine loading was safer on account of the concentration and possibility of close supervision, Mr. Harrington said he believed concentration likely to prove a source of danger rather than its preventive. At Dolomite, Alabama, a number of men had assembled, and as a result what was a relatively small explosion killed a large number of men. Concentration is not without its dangers to mine operations. MR. McAULIFFE: These arguments do not appeal to me. Few places are better sprinkled than the working places in a machine loading mine. There is. more effective supervision, and there can be more ventilation. I believe machine loading will increase safety by that very concentration that Mr. Harrington deplores.

Scarcity of high grade copper low impurity content ores is a reality and processing of low grade dirty concentrates is a need. In spite of this fact, innovative strategies have to be looked at to comply with day to day more stringent environmental regulations. From this perspective the production of matte grades over 70% in copper presents several merits, but it must be contrasted with the fractional distribution of impurities reporting to the condensed phases. Converting of white metal high in arsenic content results in moderate fraction of arsenic to gas, but high deportment to blister. Therefore, production of anode copper, as required by the electrolytic refinery, may result in several operational difficulties. Furthermore, by recycling the flue dust and slag produced in the smelting-fire refining cycle, the arsenic content in the feed to smelting increases and so does in the resulting anode copper. The Teniente Converter, as a smelting unity, has probed suitable for production of high matte grade near white metal composition but regarding distribution behaviour of impurities there is lack of reliable data, specially when processing concentrates over 1% in arsenic content. In the new scenario, i.e. low grade copper high arsenic content concentrates, to fully asses the merits of this technology the effect of matte grade, secondary materials recycling and arsenic in feed upon the distribution coefficient of arsenic between slag and matte, mainly, must be evaluated both from a theoretical approach and by use of industrial data. Based on available data correlations of distribution coefficient, matte grade and matte/slag ratios with arsenic in feed and copper content in slag are worked out. Based on these results suggestions as to matte grades facilitating to deal more efficiently with the handling of smelting byproducts are proposed.

UNGER,*Pittsburgh, Pit., (written discussion?).-From the subject of the paper it is natural to expect that the data presented must be results secured from an open-hearth furnace working under normal conditions, but such is not the case, as the conclusions are based on the results of laboratory tests, which do not approach service conditions. The early basic hearths were made of burnt lime, then followed burnt dolomite, bricks made of calcined dolomite and a 'binder, usually tar, and finally magnesite bricks covered with a layer of sintered magnesite. When this material became scarce, special dolomitic refractories were used. In the summary, it is claimed that magnesite low in lime, or of greatest purity, ranks first in the resistance to slaking and to corrosive slags. It is well known that neither pure lime nor magnesia has much value as a refractory. By the addition f fluxes, such as silica and iron oxide, lime is rendered inert to slaking in the same way as are the special dolomitic refractories. An example on a large scale is the ordinary basic open-hearth cinder, produced every clay, which does not slake. Pure magnesia, regardless of the lime content, is not any better fitted for a refractory than pure lime. The pure natural varieties, such as Grecian or Washington magnesites, must be burnt with sufficient silica and oxide of iron to produce a satisfactory material. Grain magnesite, either artificial or natural, is, not used in burning in a hearth in the state in which it is received. To make a satisfactory hearth, it must be made more impure by adding about 20 per cent. of basic open-hearth cinder, otherwise it will-not remain in place.

A new model for hollow rock bolts which comprises rock material, hollow bolt material, bolt/rock interface, is developed on the base of the composite element method (CEM). The main advantage of the new model is that it can be incorporated into the conventional finite element analysis. So the mesh generation of bolted rock structures becomes more convenient and feasible, which is very important in the optimisation of reinforcement design: the mesh can be kept unchanged when the number and orientation of bolts are adjusted. The comparison of the calculation results with a conventional FE approach shows the robustness of the proposed method. Un nouveau modèle numérique de boulons creux comprenant la roche, le matériau du boulon creux et l’interface roche / boulon est développé sur la base de la méthode des éléments composites (CEM). L’avantage principal du nouveau modèle est la possibilité de l’incorporer dans une analyse aux éléments finis conventionnelle. On December 8th of last year, the new St. Clair River tunnel was holed-through to Port Huron, Michigan. The tunnel, commissioned by the Canadian National Railway, was needed to replace an existing tunnel that had been built between 1889 and 1890, and had remained in continuous operation until the new tunnel was opened to traffic in April of this year. The original tunnel, after more than 100 years of service, was still structurally sound, but was too small to accommodate the double stacked container cars and other advances in the railroad's equipment that had developed over the years. Prior to the construction of the first tunnel, all freight was barged across the river. It was a slow, expensive process, which in winter was sometimes impossible. The nineteenth century tunnel was built in twenty months, utilizing two shields that mined to the middle from each end. The lining, which is still in excellent condition, consisted of bolted, cast iron segments, with an O.D. of 6.4 meters. It was the first sub-aqueous tunnel built in North American, and it's use of compressed air under the river and hydraulic power on the shields may also have been firsts. The digging was done by hand, and the muck hauled out by mule drawn wagons. Boulders and methane gas were reported to be a constant problem during the drive, and compressed air sickness was common, but when the two shields came together in August of 1890, it was reported that the alignment was within 6 mm. The new St. Clair River Tunnel was constructed for basically the same reason as the original. The larger equipment which the railroad is using today would not fit through the old tunnel, and once more they were forced to ferry the cars across the river.

THE essential principle of this new process, now in operation in Chili and in North Carolina, for the extraction of copper from its ores, is the dissolving of the oxides of copper by a hot solution of protochloride of iron and common salt. In the action which takes place, the protochloride of iron is converted into peroxide, while the oxides of copper are changed into protochloride and dichloride, the latter of which, though insoluble in water, is readily soluble in a hot strong brine. From the solution thus obtained, metallic iron throws down the copper in a metallic state, regenerating the protochloride of iron; which is then ready for the treatment of a fresh portion of oxidized copper ore. In the case of slimy ores, the contact of the bath with the ore is effected by agitation in tubs ; but when the ores are granular, lixiviation in large vats is equally efficient and simpler. The hot solutions, charged with chlorides of copper, are digested in tanks with scrap-iron, or better, are made to flow through covered channels containing the scrap-iron, and in their passage lose the whole of their copper; the reaction at the same time evolving so much heat as to keep up the temperature of the liquid. In order to prevent a certain loss of chlorine, which otherwise takes place from the production of some basic ferric chloride in the reaction between the ferrous chloride and the oxides of copper (both protoxide and dinoxide being generally present in calcined ores), a portion of sulphurous fumes from the roasting is made to pass through the regenerated bath before adding it to fresh ore. This has hitherto been effected by injection, with the aid of a jet of steam.

The idea of veneering rich yellow gold alloys with a low-melting, high expansion porcelain, has been a driving force for metal-ceramic research in dentistry. Since 1990, with the advent of the Carrara System (1), a low firing temperature veneering ceramic allowed the use of gold alloys with a lower content of platinum and palladium than the traditional gold-platinum ceramic alloys and thus a richer yellow color. The earlier high gold-platinum ceramic alloys contained at least 12 percent platinum group metals to allow for dimensional stability when firing the relatively high melting traditional ceramics. This amount of platinum group metals gave the alloys a greyish tinge which made them unattractively steel colored and difficult to present as ?high gold alloys?. In the 90?s the new generation universal low-melting, high expansion gold alloys gained market share at a steady rate, starting in Germany, and have now for a great part replaced the traditional gold-platinum alloys (Fig. 1). The first alloys contained 75 wt-% gold and up to 9 wt-% platinum or palladium. They provided a metal-ceramic system in which a gold alloy having an aesthetic yellow colour is fired on with a dental porcelain tailored thereto. The tailoring is meant in respect of compatible coefficients of thermal expansion, and compatible melting or softening points of metal and porcelain. The major concerns in the beginning were with thermal stability during firing, the thermal expansion coefficient of the alloy against the porcelain (compatibility) and the yellow color. In a later stage, alloys with gold contents in the range of 50-60 wt-% gold were developed in analogy with the pale yellow gold-reduced alloys that were formerly used for crown & bridge work and the white gold-reduced alloys used for metal veneering where gold was substituted in part by palladium.

The authors give a definition of the various types of corrosion that may affect a metallic conductor buried in the ground, namely: 1. The metallic conductor may be attacked by the surrounding soil. This phenomenon is purely local and is called by them soil corrosiveness. 2. The metallic conductor may connect two regions of the ground when the electrolytes have a different composition. An electrical current will then be generated and certain zones of the conductor will be oxidized. This is autogalvanic corrosion. 3. Stray current may flow in the ground and enter the conductor in certain sections and leave it in others, thus causing oxidization in certain zones; this is electrolytic corrosion. The soil corrosiveness has been studied extensively by the United States Bureau of Standards and the authors give a summary of the work carried out and results obtained along this line. In autogalvanic corrosion it has been shown, by the investigation of buried pipes, that the zones of corrosion are associated with the zones of egress of the electric current (anodic zones). The location of these zones can be determined by measuring at the surface of the ground the difference of potential that exists along the path of the pipe. This work is performed easily and quickly with the apparatus invented by the authors for the exploration of conductive orebodies. The problem of electrolytic corrosion is a difficult one because it is a question of stray current which may vary in direction and intemsity at every instant. Therefore the components of the electrical field must be known at a given station and compared with the components of the clectrical field at another station, at the same moment. This is achieved by a rccording apparatus that will register the variations of the intensity of the electrlc current along two rectangular directions, during several minutes

Future depth and production limitations of an ore hoisting system are fixed by its initial design criteria. There is little scope to extend these limitations once installation is completed. Depth and production rate upgrades from the initial duty to the hoistÆs practical limitations require capital expenditure in stages, each of which can be defined when assessing the initial system design criteria. A means of presenting and assessing the design criteria, the limiting factors in each option and the relative present and future capital costs is necessary to arrive at a solution that delivers the best value to the mine. Application of this technique to recent friction winder installations and upgrades in the Australian mining industry is of particular interest; however, the analysis methods are also applicable to drum hoists. It is usual to specify a minimum hoisting capacity and depth, based on mine ore handling design and production needs. The final hoist depth and production rate are usually a result of the initial hoist design and hence it is useful from the outset to specify a required production versus depth envelope for the mine. Technical solutions can then be modelled within this envelope at their initial and final duties and a comparative analysis made against the cost of installing and progressively upgrading each solution. Understanding the factors that constrain each solution to a maximum production rate at a given depth is important, as the costs of overcoming limiting parameters such as rope tread pressure and motor power can be significant. The task of understanding and evaluating the options open to the hoisting system designer is simplified using this approach. Communicating the results of a multi-dimensional problem such as hoist specification is also made easier using the graphical methods inherent in the analysis.

DIATOMACEOUS earth occurs in deposits widely distributed throughout the nation. The chief producing areas are in the Western States, where many high-grade deposits are known. Eastern deposits of diatomite are unsatisfactory for many purposes either because of impurity or because of the extremely fine particle size. Eastern users of diatomite, on the whole, must pay for transportation of the material from the west coast. The freight rate is necessarily high because of the great bulk of the diatomite. A satisfactory process of purifying the diatomaceous earths of Maryland and Virginia, which are unsuited for wide use only because of impurities, should be of value to eastern users. In the past, benefication of diatomite by wet processes has been limited to classification or sedimentation for the removal of sand from diatoms. Calcination with salt is used to produce a white diatomite when iron is present in the impurities, and small amounts of clay are rendered inactive in the process. No treatment has been developed whereby a large proportion of clay can be removed from a low-grade diatomaceous earth to give a diatomite of very high purity. In August 1937 the Federal Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with Dr. R. C. Williams, of Baltimore, undertook the problem of purifying low-grade Maryland diatomite by froth flotation. Work was done at the Eastern Experiment Station, College Park. Unless otherwise stated, the crude diatomite used was from the Patuxent River deposits near Dunkirk. This material, consisting of roughly one-third each of clay, quartz sand and diatoms, was representative of the usual low-grade marine diatomite found in the Coastal Plain Miocene beds of Maryland and Virginia and sporadically in other Atlantic coast states. As received, it contained 50 to 60 per cent moisture and probably had been wet since its formation.

(written discussion ?).-Firebricks intended for, the same purpose, but supplied by different manufacturers, may be of entirely different clays, contain different proportions of flint, calcined and plastic clays; the particles may vary widely in size; the water used to make the brick will vary; the pressure in molding will vary, depend-ing on whether the brick is hand made or power pressed; and the degree of burning in the same kiln will differ. These variables affect the melting point and the strength of the brick when heated. An important property, of a firebrick is its ability to resist heat and, at the same time, weight or load without serious deformation. The soft-ening point and the melting point of a firebrick may be several hundred degrees apart, and two bricks may show considerable difference in their softening points, but the melting points may be approximately the same. Bricks are not usually employed at temperatures close to their melting points. If they must withstand very high temperatures, the firebrick is discarded and a brick of more refractory material is used. Under these conditions' it is doubtful whether the determination of the melting point of a brick has much practical value. If the determination of the melting point is necessary, the test should he made on a portion of the original brick and not on a specially prepared sample. A small triangular pyramid with a base about 1 1/2 in. and 3 in. high can be sawed from the corner of the brick with a thin-bladed car-borundum wheel, without injuring or destroying the size of particles, the bond, or degree of burning of the original brick. This specimen can then he compared with standard Seger cones or tested by any other method desired.

Namibia is one of Africa's newest nations. A German colony until 1915, it then became a South African protectorate until 1990, when it gained independence after an armed struggle that lasted more than two decades. However, no trace of past bitterness can be found today in the capital, Windhoek, or in the countryside. Namibia is now one of the safest parts of Africa. Namibia's industrial base and infrastructure have been untouched by war. Swapo, the ruling party, has embarked on a successful policy of reconciliation and economic development. The GNP per capita is a surprising $1500 (from the World Bank), one of the highest in Africa. Namibia's population stands at 1.3 million, including about 100,000 whites. Namibia is a very sparsely populated country (1.7 inhabitants per km2). About 70% of the people are farmers. Namibia has a surface area of 824,232 km2 (318,261 sq miles), about the size of France and Germany combined. The semi-arid climate and generally flat morphology make the country well suited to mineral exploration. About 40% of the country presents abundant rock outcrops. The rest is buried under the Kalahari sands. However, this cover in most of the country hardly exceeds 200 m (655 ft), and Australian technology has shown that large mineral deposits (Roxby Downs) can nowadays be found at even greater depths. Mining is Namibia's largest industry. In 1991, it accounted for 22% of the country's GDP, about 70% to 80% of its exports by value and 25% of internally generated government revenues. The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) is responsible for formulating and implementing national mineral policies. This agency has recently introduced legislation aimed at encouraging new and long-term investment in the mineral sector. The variety of Namibian mineral resources, both metallic and nonmetallic, is rivaled by few countries worldwide.

Under the name given to this column, I almost feel obliged to write about some aspect of grinding, but I have decided instead to comment on the future of chemical processing. In recent years, I have seen a tremendous interest in extractive metallurgy develop among undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Utah. For example, of the 12 graduating seniors this year, over half seem to prefer extractive metallurgy to physical metallurgy. In particular, they seem to be most interested in hydrometallurgy, or chemical processing, obtaining industrial exposure to the phenomena they study via part-time employment at the Kennecott Research Center and the USBM Metallurgical Center in Salt Lake City. The stimulus has been generated by society itself. Many students are dedicated to the proposition that new technology can circumvent the destruction of our environment, a concept which provides considerable motivation. At the governmental level, the recent concern for the quality of our environment has created action in the area of chemical processing both through imposition of stringent air and water quality standards, and through increased funding for technological research in this area. The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) gave impetus to this movement when it pointed up the need for development and support of such disciplines as extractive metallurgy, particularly chemical processing, in a recent report on Mineral Science and Technology. The recommendations in the NAS report have prompted governmental action on many fronts, including the Bureau of Mines, and have also given rise to direct legislation in the form of two bills -H. R. 3492 and S. 635- presently before Congress to a mineral engineering education. The report recommends that chemical processing technology (more generally extractive metallurgy) be developed by both new engineering techniques and unconventional chemical techniques such as application of the chemistry of nonaqueous liquids to mineral systems.

At a time when the US mining industry is struggling to emerge from a lengthy recession, the burden of new, unnecessary regulations could shorten the life of, or be fatal to many domestic mining companies. The possibility of new restrictions on the use of diesel equipment operating in underground mines is one example of unnecessary regulations. These could cause serious harm to the economic health of many mining companies. Whether future health-related Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations restricting the use of diesel equipment are unnecessary, depends on whether these restrictions are supported by fact or created in a political environment. The mining industry has benefited from the use of diesel equipment in underground metal-non-metal and coal mines for more than 50 years. Since first introduce to underground mines in the early 1940s, the use of diesel equipment has grown in numbers and size. During this time, the mining industry in America has achieved much higher productivity rates and improved safety. Although all these gains cannot be attributed to the greater use of diesel equipment, a high percentage can be. I began my professional mining ca¬reer in 1970 working in the Missouri lead mines. At that time, the use of diesel equipment was well established in metal-non-metal mines throughout the United States and many parts of the world. As director of mining research for St. Joe Minerals Corp. (now The Doe Run Co.), I was involved in research to improve mining productivity and safety. This involved investigating the better and safer use of existing or new mining methods, products, equipment and people. Within this group, diesel equipment had the single largest positive impact.

Those familiar with mill-practice understand the work required of an average bucket-elevator, but I wish to call special attention to the wear on the buckets. I have been studying in what manner the life and service of the bucket might be improved, and I feel that an adjustable lip, attachable to each bucket without the aid of rivets, will be of material advantage. For illustration, consider the feed-elevator of a typical mill in the Cæur d'Alene district. The ore is carried by water in a launder from the feed-rolls and dumped in the " boot" of the elevator, directly in front of the ascending bucket. Middlings from the return-rolls are similarly handled. Under this condition the bucket not only carries the ore, but also picks it up, and this latter requirement determines the life and service of the bucket. It might be said that it would be better practice to convey the feed to the elevator and dump it directly into the bucket, but at one mill at which this plan mas tried the results were disappointing and the rubber belt was badly worn. The wear of the bucket is confined to the lip and the corners which have to pick up the material. When the lip on a corner of a '7- by 12-in. malleable cast-iron bucket is worn down about 3 in., the bucket is of no further value as a carrier and has to be replaced. The worn bucket, containing about three-quarters by weight of the metal of the original bucket, has a scrap value of about 10 per cent. of that of a new bucket. My closest personal connection with the problems of rehabilitation comes from two years spent on a project at Weipa. At the beginning I am fairly certain that the engineers did not understand the mental processes of the ecologist they were dealing with. I am absolutely certain that the ecologist did not understand the minds of the engineers. This form of the two cultures problem is the root of some of the matters that lie behind this lecture. It is possible to establish a stabilising cover of vegetation on virtually any land surface, short of a cliff. While the biologist knows this he also knows that the physical and chemical nature of a given acre of land combines with climate to define quite sharply just what plants can be grown there. In the case of land after mining the range of plants may be quite limited. The engineer, and his masters in the accounting section, seem (in my experience) to expect that rehabilitation can be carried on with equal speed and facility in any location. This belief commonly leads to a situation where rehabilitation is not considered until mining is well under way. True, the mine must be proved as an assured profit- earner before money can be justified for the non-productive (to the miner) expense of rehabilitation. But when the miner finally starts rehabilitation he does not always get a convincing and speedy result. Furthermore, the failure may not be easy to overcome. Although the effects of sea level changes on ore concentration processes are to some extent obvious with certain deposits, e.g. beach placer deposits, they have been largely overlooked with others such as Mississippi Valley type lead-zinc deposits. It is contended that sea level variations may have more profound effects on a wide range of deposits than has previously been appreciated. These deposits include not only placer'and residual deposits but also stratiform copper deposits, Mississippi Valley type deposits, stratiform manganese deposits and Minette type iron deposits. Sea levels in paralic basins profoundly affect the influx of 'detrital sediment, and this has to be suppressed to allow for the accumulation of thick rich deposits of coal evaporites, phosphate or metalliferous sediment. Emergence can be associated with oxidized waters, erosion, and,solution of soluble rocks. Submergence can reverse the Eh trend and can lead to preservation of ores. Both realms of surficial sedimentary environments and subsurface diagenetic environments can be affected by changes in water pressure, gas pressure (pC02), Eh, pH, and temperature as sea levels fluctuate. Even relatively small sea level changes may have profound effects. For example, there is some evidence to suggest that when the level dropped below 100 metres about 10,000 years ago, the Red Sea became isolated by the sill at Bab el Mandeb in the south, and evaporated away to leave a series of shallow lakes. The Red Sea is 1 to 2 km deep. It was at times such as this that the well-known copper-zinc mineralization developed in the Red Sea trough. Changes in sea level also affect the stability field of gas hydrates which can yield large volumes of gas leading to mass movements on the sea floor (Warnke, 1986).

Investment in mining and related process facilities will be more costly and complex in the 1980s than ever before. Interest rates and inflation are soaring; regulations are expanding; and in order to achieve economies of scale, plant facilities and mines are getting larger. As the pace quickens, the time/cost circuit closes around the resource owner or developer. Larger modern projects cost more money and take more time to build. The longer it takes to bring a project onstream, the more it costs in interest, escalation, and lost production. One solution to the time/cost squeeze is to take advantage of systems developed by major contractors serving the mining industry. These contractors have been serving clients in planning and executing large and small projects for many years. They have developed systems which, if applied at an early point in the project's life, can be a significant benefit in development of mineral resources. The systems involve performance of feasibility studies, economic evaluations, and the project installation itself. First the Feasibility Study Feasibility studies can minimize risk through systematic evaluations while progressing toward the ultimate objective-an operating plant. Normally, studies are initiated with a minimum amount of specific information and a maximum number of as¬sumptions. Through the course of the study program, assumptions are continuously confirmed, refined, or rejected by facts until a sound basis for decision is available. High on the list of cost effective tools for evaluation is the use of a geostatistically derived sampling program that provides a highly accurate ore reserve estimate for economic evaluation. When a predetermined sample of data from the drilling program and bench-scale or pilot-plant tests are received, a detailed feasibility study may be started.
