Profitably recovering copper and precious metals from copper bearing scrap is a demanding and frustrating combination of art, science and economics. With fluctuating markets, varying raw materials and increasingly stringent environmental regulations requiring process revisions, practically everything is changing. The volatile copper market constantly shifts the percentage of copper in the scrap that can be economically processed. Scrap that has value one day may incur a disposal cost the following day. Also with less copper in the scrap, more residuals, slag, fume, etc. are generated which frequently present disposal problems and infrequently generate income. The ever increasing amounts of electronic scrap add value to the copper produced by virtue of the precious metals present. Printed circuit board materials create more slag and organic off gases which must be treated. Finally, the emphasis on reducing emissions of organics and other metals, especially lead, is a continuing challenge. Stack gases, fugitive emissions and ambient air quality all demand constant surveillance.

Copper plays an essential role in our society. It is one of the key materials supporting economic growth and human development in emerging economies, for its common use in construction, power generation and transmission. It is also a critical metal for the transition to a low carbon future, particularly for its uses in renewable energy and electric vehicles. As a result, global demand for copper has been increasing steadily and is predicted to continue in the future. The demand-supply gap is currently growing, and new mines will be needed to fill it. This project observes the current pipeline of copper mining projects, which are characterised by technical complexity (lower grades, deeper deposits, complex mineralogy etc.) but also environmental, social and governance (ESG) complexities. A common assumption in the mining industry is that a rise in copper prices will unlock these deposits. However, while most technical complexities are price sensitive and are likely to be overcome in favourable economic conditions, the influence of ESG complexities is more difficult to evaluate. One of the largest items in the expense of operating a refinery is the cost of the fuel used in distillation and for miscellaneous purposes such as in the heating of buildings and in the generation of electricity, On a B. t. u. basis, the average refinery consumes approximately one-tenth as much fuel as it produces. Theoretically, the fuel consumption at refineries should be much smaller than this, but furnaces can riot be designed to be 100 per cent efficient' and, in addition, a large part of the waste heat is low-temperature heat which would not pay for the expense of recovering it. Annual surveys of fuel consumption at refineries have been made by the United States Bureau of Mines, beginning with 1925. During the 5-year period, 1925-1929, the refineries made steady progress in fuel economy. This is evidenced by the Computed figures of heat requirement Per barrel of crude oil refined, which show a decline from 829,000 B. t. u. in 1925 to 639,000 B. t. u. in 1929 (see fig. 1). In 1930, however, the trend in fuel economy was reversed and the quantity of heat utilized in refining the average barrel of crude oil rose to 672,000 B. t. u. There were undoubtedly a number of reasons for the apparent decrease in fuel economy at refineries in 1930, chief of which were the tendency to carry the distillation farther instead of merely topping the crude and a gain in the consumption of waste oils, such as acid sludge, which in actual practice yield less heat per unit consumed than has been theoretically assigned to oil. The consumption of natural as fuel at refineries has declined since 1927, but this has been more than compensated by a rapid increase in the use of refinery or still gas. The total consumption of oil as refinery fuel in 1930 was not much below the 1925 total, but the consumption of coal has declined rapidly, so that in 1930 liquid and solid fuels contributed only 56 per cent of the total heat units- utilized at refineries as compared with 77 per cent in 1925 (see fig. 2).

Several foaming aluminum samples of different density were prepared in a semi-industrial scale experimental system. Their properties such as the energy absorption characteristics, mechanical properties, heat conductivity and acoustical properties were measured. The results showed that the foaming aluminum with a density of 0.5 to 0.6 g/cm3 has the best energy absorption and this makes it suitable as the ensuring bar of the automobiles and also as a cushion material for the engine. The foaming aluminum with a density of 0.25 to 0.4 g/cm3 has the best acoustical properties and heat conductivity resistance, which is suitable for the door filling material, the ceiling and the partition of the car engine.

Mill ball charging systems have undergone little change during the past two decades. Most operations utilize a locomotive/ball car combination to load and haul charges from the ball storage bin to the mill charging boxes or, alternatively, transport charges to the charging boxes by means of a ball bucket handled by bridge crane. This paper describes a new concept in ball handling systems that is in operation at the Island Copper Concentrator of Utah Mines, Ltd. at Port Hardy, B.C. This system employs a narrow belt conveyor to convey a weighed charge to each of nine belt unloading stations at the mills. In operation, the system has proved to be practicable, trouble-free and economical of operating labor.

Despite a global slowdown in most mining sectors, Caterpillar, the world?s largest mining equipment maker continues to forge ahead with new, and improved offerings to the global mining industry. On Nov. 10, as part of its Loading and Hauling Mining Focus Session at its Tinaja Hills proving grounds south of Tucson, AZ, Caterpillar unveiled to customers and media its two latest mining products, the 994K wheel loader and 6020B hydraulic shovel. The Caterpillar 994K wheel loader builds on a nearly 25-year history of the 994 model but with one noticeable difference ? the 994K is bigger ? much bigger. Weighing in at 239,142 kg (527,218 lb) the 994 K is up to 20 percent larger and comes with up to 30 percent increase in payload capacity. This behemoth of a machine is currently being tested at Caterpillar?s Tucson Proving Grounds, Anglo Gold Ashanti?s Cripple Creek and Victor gold mine in Colorado and Taseko?s Gibraltor copper and molybdenum mine in British Columbia, Canada.

DURING the last three years, investigations on the aluminum reduction of magnesium-bearing compounds have been initiated at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, The Technical University of Norway. The results of these investigations are reported in this paper. Very little information exists in the literature on the reaction between magnesium compounds and metallic aluminum. The available information itself is conflicting, and, to clarify the existing discrepancy, the reactions between aluminum and magnesium oxide (MgO), caJcined dolomite (CaO . MgO) and olivine (Mg2SiO.) were studied. The logical approach for the study of these reactions between condensed states with the formation of a gaseous phase is, ( 1) the measurement of the equilibrium vapour pressure of the gas, in this case magnesium, associated with the respective reactions and, (2) the identification of the end products of the reaction in order to establish the re-action scheme.

At our Monkland Mine at Gympie, we operate a deep, narrow vein gold mine using hand held equipment, rail mounted haulage and narrow shafts. This is in many respects the old-fashioned way and is well suited most of the orebody geometry exposed to-date. We have also commenced some long hole stoping and we use alimaks for some jobs. The heart of our particular mining style is the employment and retention of experienced miners with remuneration based on productivity. We do our planning/monitoring/supervision down to the level of daily individual productivity. In focussing on cycles per se, we have chosen not to talk about drill and blast cycles or cycles for mine development, stope preparation or drawdown and haulage. Instead we have stepped right back from the operation as presently run and have adopted a very broad view of the mining cycle. We will in this presentation intertwine the ebb and flow of, exploration, project sponsorship, development, production and cash returns to owners. The time line considered spans both history and predicted future.

New or improved technology will continue to drive productivity improvements through the next decade. In January 1988, I presented a paper titled, "Large Underground Mines of the 1990s? before the SME. I will follow some of the themes developed in that paper as modified by our experience in the past two years. In order for a coal company to be profitable today, it has had to reduce unit costs experienced in the past. This is because the current average realization, even accounting for a recent strengthening, remains below that of a few years ago. Doing business as was done in the past is not good enough. The coal industry needs to increase productivity in the range of 5-10% annually merely to stay even with rising costs. Underground productivity has been increasing more rapidly than that for surface mining. With the exception of the Powder River basin of Montana and Wyoming, underground productivity has caught up with that for surface mining in many regions of America. There are a number of technological factors which have attributed to increases in underground productivity and which should be factors in the future.

THE importance of the Donets coal field (the Donbas) to the national economy of the Soviet Union is well known. Great as was the significance of this tremendous deposit of coal in prewar days it is destined to become an even greater factor in the economic life of the country now that the tremendous havoc wrought by the Germans is being remedied. Since the war began, new coal fields have been extended; for example output of the Moscow and Karaganda (Kazakhstan) fields has become considerably larger while new mines are producing coal in several parts of Uzbekistan and Kirghizia. The huge West Siberian coal field, the Kuznetsk Basin, is producing more coal than ever before to supply the industries of that region and of the Urals. But so great has been the development of industry to meet war needs, especially in those districts of the Soviet Union that lie to the East of the Urals, that the coal obtained, eked out by such locally-won fuels as peat and wood, is still barely sufficient to meet industrial requirements. The main burden of the coal supply for the restored industries of the West, therefore, will fall on the Donbas.

DESPITE the tremendous drop in the volume of domestic production of metals, their prices, and profits, the world as a whole has managed to produce and consume nearly as much as in 1937. Measured by production, 1937 was the record year for copper, lead, and zinc. The Copper Institute figures for 1938 (estimating December as equal to November) show that although apparent domestic consumption declined 309,422 tons, foreign consumption increased 133.035 tons. The total for 1938 was 1,971,790 tons compared with 2,148,177 tons for 1937. The domestic decline was 38.5 per cent, the foreign increase 9.9 per cent, and the total decline 8.2 per cent.

PRODUCERS of building stone have had to seek new and attractive uses for their output to supplement the diminished orders for standard products. Lunar is the direct result of the need of new outlets for marble and is. probably the most ingenious and attractive type to reach the market in a quarter of a century. It is a highly translucent stone which retains the same glistening sparkle in transmitted light that marble exhibits by incident rays. This sparkle sets it apart entirely from translucencies made of glass or even onyx, alabaster, and the distinctive exceedingly fine textured calcite marbles produced in Alabama and quarried formerly in northern Vermont and Quebec.

MAGNETITE mining and milling in the Eastern States showed continuing improvement during the year. Some of the smaller mines remained idle, but the larger operations responded promptly to the improved situation in the iron and steel industry. The output of ore for 1936 was over twice that for 1935. A number of improvements were made in mine plant and equipment, and operating forces were increased and maintained at near normal. The coming year should see additional mines started up and production increased at the larger properties.

The current processes that aim to purify molybdenite concentrates are not able to dissolve some copper compounds, hence limiting the processes. Typically, the copper content results are from 2 up to 4 weight percent in the last concentrate. Such values are still too high for the molybdenite concentrate to be further processed to molybdenum trioxide by roasting. In order to achieve lower levels of copper — but also avoid excessive molybdenite losses — a continuous sulfation-leaching process is investigated and applied successfully on a pilot scale. Additionally, a reactor prototype and its process parameters are proposed for a commercial plant.

W. de Klerk, Minister of Mineral and Energy Affairs, announced the change of name at the official opening of the main entrance to Mintek's premises on 30th October, 1981. Awards for bravery Two men who disregarded the dangers of fiercely burning timber and falling rocks to douse an underground fire, using their hard hats to scoop water from a drain, received the Chamber of Mines Award for bravery at a ceremony held at West Driefontein Gold Mine near the end of October.

COAL preparation will be the main topic discussed at the first fall meeting of the Coal Division at Pittsburgh, Sept. 11, 12 and 13, though valuation, mergers, safety, stream pollution and other topics will not' be neglected. It is particularly appropriate that the great changes taking place in preparing coal for the market should be discussed at length where in the plants of the Pittsburgh Coal Co. and others the opportunity is afforded to see on a large scale just what is being accomplished. In wartime, the United States broke all records in coal production, but, as the late Franklin K. Lane pointed out, every fifth car shipped consisted of dirt. Obviously that constituted a big bur- den on industry and, in the remaking of the business which is now taking place both in the anthracite and bituminous fields, clean coal has properly enough be- come a watchward. Central coal-cleaning plants are being erected as a part answer to the puzzled inquiry of those familiar with metal mining as to why miners of coal have so long been content with what are relatively small units of production. Gradually big collieries comparable in tonnage output to the biggest copper mines are being built, and excellent examples are to be seen near Pittsburgh. (communication to the Secretary*):—In my paper on the Conservation of Natural Resources, I referred to the slow replacement of bee-hive ovens by the by-product ovens as a most notable instance of waste. And I quoted from Mr. Parker's report for 1906 an explanation given by him in accounting for the small production of by-product coke. It was that the market for the by-products of the coke-ovens was so limited that some of the ovens constructed were out of operation. His report on the manufacture of coke in 1908' does not record an improvement, and attributes the strange fact that we alone, of all the industrial peoples, delay the adoption of this cardinal improvement from the continuance of the same almost inexplicable cause. THE manufacture of wheels of metal for locomotives and cars constitutes an important branch of the iron industry, and one closely related, moreover, to many of the conditions of railway practice, such as speed, safety of passengers, and economy of working. It has been, also, since the introduction of iron roads, a subject of constant study on the part both of engineers of construction and iron manufacturers. The car-wheels at first used in Europe had spokes of wrought iron and a hub of cast iron. Subsequently endeavors were made to make the wheels entirely of wrought iron, by forging successively the different parts which constituted the hub, spokes, and rim. By this treatment the expansion of the heated portions at the last forgings gave rise to interior ruptures in the already cold and finished parts. The metal was thus strained before use, and the wheels broke frequently in service. It was in consequence of these failures, doubtless, that the engineers of this country were led to employ exclusively wheels of cast iron. The railway companies are nevertheless greatly interested in the reduction of the weight of rolling stock, while preserving abundant strength, and by the employment of wrought-iron wheels one may attain this double end if the defects of manufacture which we have just mentioned are avoided. This may be accomplished by making the wheels in such a manner that the different parts are welded at the same time, whereby the interior strains which so frequently give rise to ruptures in wheels successively forged are avoided. This result has been attained by what is known in France as the Arbel process, of which I will give you a short description if you will kindly give me a few minutes' attention.
