The worldwide talc industry has experienced significant changes since the 1980's. Consolidation of companies and operations in Europe, Australia, and North America has altered the face of supply and distribution. Imports of Chinese and Australian crude have increased competition and product options. The number of processing operations without local mines has moved competition closer to the market area. Quality controls related to ISO certification and tighter specifications demanded by the customers have altered the way our mines and mills operate. Ceramics, coatings, and paper applications continue to consume the majority of processed talc.

"Predictive geometallurgical models are being developed for the Productora Cu-Au-Mo deposit based on geochemistry to reflect variability in Cu species based on Cu sequential leach data (ie oxide, transitional-oxide, transitional-sulfide, sulfide and non-recoverable Cu).Productora, located in the coastal range of northern Chile, is a magmatic-hydrothermal tourmaline breccia-hosted, structurally controlled Cu-Au-Mo deposit hosted by a thick sequence of Jurassic rhyodacitic volcanic rocks. North and north-west striking fault sets control the distribution of mineralised breccias. Alteration is widespread, complex and pervasive. Hypogene alteration assemblages range in composition from distal magnetite-amphibole, to sodic-calcic, to sodic, to phyllic, to proximal potassic. Low-temperature advanced argillic assemblages are locally juxtaposed next to proximal high-temperature K-feldspar-tourmaline assemblages. The dominant hypogene Cu phase is chalcopyrite.A simple Cu species classification scheme based on sequential leach data and S per cent was devised to account for non-recoverable Cu (ie non-sulfide Cu), which is insoluble in weak acids. Through machine learning, a proxy for this Cu species classification scheme was developed based on: depth, Ca per cent, Cu per cent, Fe per cent, K per cent, Mn ppm, S per cent and Ln(Cu/S) plus logged regolith class, thus allowing classification to be extended to areas of the deposit where no sequential leach data are available. The modelled data has been used to generate deposit-wide 3D models for Cu species classification.The validity of the proxy Cu species classification model is being tested against the results of flotation analysis. Free cyanide has been successfully determined in ground and surface water by isolation using a microdiffusion technique followed by a pyridine-barbituric acid photometric finish. The determinable free cyanide includes hydrocyanic acid, ionic cyanide, and the cyanide of weak complexes such as cadmium, lead, manganese, and zinc cyanide. Complexes of copper, iron, nickel, and silver are sufficiently strong so the dissociation into free cyanide does not occur at the microdiffusion pH 7. Cyanate, sulfide, and thiocyanate do not interfere. Samples containing as little as 0.005 mg/L are successfully analyzed. The relative standard deviation is <10%. Samples stored at pH >I2 in the dark are stable at least three weeks.

"This description of the structural geology of the Beattie mine has been condensed from a more comprehensive paper published previously (4).The property is in western Quebec, a short distance east of the Ontario boundary on the extension of the so-called Porcupine belt into Quebec.According to the geological surveys of the Dominion and Provincial Governments the regional structure in the vicinity of the mine is an easterly pitching, overturned syncline with several thousand feet of Timiskaming sediments in the centre surrounded by Keewatin volcanics (1, 2, 3).The mine lies on the north limb of the syncline, and the Keewatin series in this locality is, with few exceptions, overturned, dipping steeply north and facing south.The mineralization is closely related in space, and possibly genetically, to a body of syenite porphyry intruded into the Keewatin series along the north limb of the syncline. No ore has been found very far from the syenite or related lath-porphyry dykes, and the largest orebodies are composite, consisting of bleached and brecciated volcanics ( primarily tuffs) adjacent to altered syenite porphyry, both silicified and mineralized with very fine pyrite and arsenopyrite. In addition there are important ore shoots following a fracture zone within the syenite."

"Economics of wear in mining industry and methods by which wear cost may be reduced will be discussed.IntroductionCanada loses more than $5 billion annually due to friction and wear (Table 1). It is estimated that about $1.3 billion, or about 25% of the losses, could be saved through better application of existing technology (Table 2). It should be noted that the costs given in Table 1 and 2 refer to 1986. The losses due to friction and wear and the savings would be much higher in 1996. Tribology combines the many branches and specialties in science and technology concerned with understanding and combatting friction and wear. Specifically, tribology is concerned with the design and manufacture of sliding and rolling bearings, piston rings, gears, cutting tools and other devices in which surfaces interact, in sliding or other relative motion. Tribology is concerned with the correct use of materials for interacting solid surfaces, with the interaction of the surfaces with the lubricants, with the chemistry, physics and use of lubricants. It is concerned with the reduction of friction and wear and the avoidance of associated failures in machinery. Similar tribological components such as bearings are used in different technologies and similar tribological problems such as abrasive wear occur in different industries. Thus, tribology is in itself a generic science and technology, concerned with the generation and dissemination of knowledge on friction, wear and lubrication, and the application of the knowledge, to a wide range of industrial products and equipment, from ploughs to space equipment, from prosthesis to engines, from washing machines to railways, from computers to power stations, from paper mills to mines. For many applications in hydrometallurgy and water treatment it would be advantageous to use ion-exchange resins in stirred reactors. However, attrition of the resin may lead to significant losses of both resin and metal values and prevent water quality goals from being reached. We have studied the recovery of fine resin particles by froth flotation, using the model copper - Dow XFS4195 chelating resin system. As the functional group on the resin is a bis-picolylamine, the resin should be amenable to flotation by anionic collectors, such as sodium dodecylsulfate and sodium dodecylsulfonate. The kinetics of copper loading from dilute aqueous solutions in an agitated vessel were studied as a function of copper concentration, pH and resin bead size. The flotation of unloaded resin was investigated for different types of collector, collector concentration, conditioning time, and resin bead size. Potential applications are discussed.

The recovery of minor metals from zinc concentrates is dependent on the process used for their treatment. The behaviour of gennanium and indium in pyrometallurgical processes such as the Imperial Smelting furnace or the cupola furnace is of practical importance. The .Anaconda process for the treatment of zinc leach residues is not well suited to the recovery of valuable minor metals, and new technologies must be studied. In this regard, a solvent extraction process, using Kelex 100, developed by Minenet Recherche for the recovery of gennanium from dilute sulphate leach solutions is described. Also, new hydranetallurgical techniques in chloride media can be applied to the purification and concentration of minor metals depending on the stability of their chloro-complexes and the valency of associated inpurities. A synthesis of methods is proposed to address the problems related to the recovery of valuable minor metals in the zinc industry.

A pre-flotation process of the Kupferschiefer ore with only frothers produces a concentrate enriched in carbonaceous matter and tailings for further upgrading steps. A partial removal of easy-to-float components of the feed before the main enrichments steps by flotation (rougher, scavenger) improves overall efficiency of separation of valuable elements from the ore. Since the types and doses of frother used for pre-flotation effect the process, the aim of this study was to determine the influence of selected frothers on the efficiency and selectivity of the Kupferschiefer ore processed by KGHM Polska Miedz S.A. A series of pre-flotation tests in the presence of different poly(propylene glycols) ethers, poly(ethylene glycols) ethers and aliphatic alcohols were conducted. The obtained results indicated that the types and doses of frother determine the flotation selectivity of copper and total organic carbon. The evaluation of the pre-flotation process was based on the analysis of selectivity parameters calculated from the recoveryrecovery Fuerstenau upgrading curves as well as the values of copper and organic carbon grades in the flotation products. It was shown that pre-flotation performed in the laboratory scale using a suitable frother provides higher overall flotation selectivity of organic carbon with lower overall flotation recovery of copper in comparison to flotation without the pre-flotation step. Thus, the pre-flotation process improves the quality and quantity of the final concentrates produced from the Kupferschiefer ore.

"The carbon-in-pulp (CIP) process has been the dominant gold recovery process since the early 1980s. CIP has proven to be very adaptable for a wide range of ores and circuit configurations. The key performance indicator for CIP circuits is the minimisation of soluble gold losses to tailings, however, it is also important to operate the circuit efficiently (maximising gold loadings on carbon and minimising carbon inventory). Over the last 30 years the Curtin Gold Technology Group has studied CIP circuits as part of an on-going collaborative industry funded project (the AMIRA Gold Processing Technology Project). In the early years the project undertook basic research into understanding activated carbon, and its management in the circuit. More recently the development of process models and instrumentation has provided additional tools to assist operators. The results show that while most CIP circuits operate well, there are still significant opportunities for further cost savings, or additional revenue. This paper reviews the observations arising from this work, including key requirements for good carbon management, the results of benchmarking and industry surveys of carbon circuit over 20 years, the value of process modelling of CIP circuits to establish operating parameters, and the use of automated instrumentation to better optimise carbon control in the circuit.INTRODUCTION The introduction of activated carbon to recover gold from cyanide leach solutions in the last quarter of the 20th century was the most significant development in gold ore processing since the advent of cyanidation seventy years before. Replacing the Merrill–Crowe zinc cementation step with carbon-in-pulp (CIP) or carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuits provided a process that allowed the treatment of lower grade and problematic ores (e.g. high-clay ores), at lower capital and operating costs, and higher metal recoveries. The CIP circuit was first developed in the 1950s at the Carlton Mill, Cripple Creek, Colorado. All the components of the modern CIP process came to fruition at the Homestake Mine in South Dakota in 1973 (Fast, 1988). From the late 1970s onward a variation of CIP, carbon-in-leach (CIL) which combined the leach and adsorption stages, became the preferred circuit design in most parts of the word."

The extensive central Idaho black sand placer deposits are a potential source of rare earth elements, particularly the heavy rare earth elements that are not prevalent in commercial bastnasite deposits. These placers derive from the Idaho batholith. The geology, occurrence, and extent of these deposits are reviewed and the diverse mineral assemblages and complex mineral chemical compositions of these sands are described. Niobium, yttrium and thorium are also present in significant concentrations. The results of prior mining practice, including concentration and separation of the heavy minerals are reviewed. Technical approaches to extraction of rare earths from Idaho black sand concentrates are discussed.

"Three heats of 17-4PH stainless steel: with zero, three percent, and seven percent cobalt addition were melted in a 45kg (1 00lb) induction furnace under argon; and cast into no-bake molds and preheated investment shell molds. Specimens were sealed into quartz tubes under vacuum, and homogenized at 1200°C from 2h to 72h. Computational thermodynamics and optical microscopy were used to predict and characterize the microstructures. The lath martensite packet size and the amount of 8-ferrite were observed to be inversely related. A compromise between decrease in segregation and increase in lath martensite packet size was chosen for the optimum homogenization treatment. The specimens were austenitized, quenched, and characterized for retained austenite using x-ray diffraction. Age hardening kinetics were studied at 454°C (850°F), 468°C (875°F), and 482°C (900°F); and, the activation energies for precipitation of copper were calculated. Tensile properties and Charpy V-notch impact energies were measured in the peak aged condition. Fracture surfaces were observed using scanning electron microscopy and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy. The addition of cobalt was found to be beneficial for the improvement of strength as well as notch toughness.IntroductionSegregation in the as-cast condition is one of the drawbacks of metal casting. This paper presents a study on the homogenization treatment of 17-4 PH cast stainless steel and the effect of cobalt addition on tensile properties and Charpy V-notch toughness. Lattice dilatation studies show that additions of up to 6% Co to iron has a negligible effect on the lattice parameter, whereas both the modulus of elasticity and shear modulus increase with increasing cobalt additions5• An ordering reaction has been reported in cobalt-containing, maraging steels and contributes to the hardening during ageing1-4• Although, cobalt addition in maraging steels has been extensively researched, and has been reported to be beneficial; it has not been explored much in other age-hardening stainless steel systems. In a previous study, the addition of 3% Co in cast 17-4 PH martensitic age-hardenable steel was found to improve the strength and elongation while maintaining the charpy V-notch toughness6."

Selecting the best possible cranes and identifying spatial conflict-free locations on sites can result in productivity and safety improvements for large-scale industrial construction projects. In the current practice, experienced lift engineers select cranes based on the heaviest lift and/or the largest lifting radius of the identified crane. This practice is relatively time-consuming, and optimization of the crane?s use and location is also difficult. There are many factors which need to be considered during the crane selection process, a reality which further complicates the process. This paper presents a framework which aims at developing a decision support system to enhance the crane selection process and collision-free path planning for large-scale construction projects. This paper utilizes an innovative crane selection matrix in order to establish a process for optimized crane selection for construction projects. The study considers more than 40 different factors in order to reduce time and improve safety for crane operations. Following finalization of crane type (mobile crane versus tower crane), a visualization model to simulate crane operation and identify collision-free crane operation paths is proposed. This process can assist project managers to plan the lifting process more effectively and efficiently. A case study-based approach was utilized to demonstrate the proposed methodology. The methodology was tested in the planning and construction process for boiler house structures in Mannheim, Germany. The project entailed numerous challenges: one of the major tasks was to lift a 102-ton load on the top of the boiler structure through crane collaboration; space limitations on site also presented several challenges related to crane selection, location, and operation processes. Based on the project constraints, the proposed crane selection framework, and the visualization models, two tower cranes were selected and successfully implemented in the case study.

"This research study aims to identify the best way of processing colemanite concentrates, which is sometimes characterised by a high content of As sulphides, finely disseminated in the matrix of the boron mineral.Scanning Electron Microscopy analyses have been carried out to identify all the mineralogical constituents and to evaluate their distribution, frequency and mutual relationships.Colemanite concentrates are mainly used by chemical plants producing boric acid and gypsum. A high As content is unacceptable for further use of tailings coming from the leaching process and is very dangerous if the tailings are released into the environment.Grinding tests were conducted under dry and wet conditions in order to assess how As sulphide minerals are released from colemanite minerals.Some of the difficulties involved in obtaining selective liberation of As sulphides from colemanite minerals were overcome, although a certain decrease in As grade in the higher size classes was registered.All comminution products have been analysed by SEM, monitoring the degree of liberation of the mineralogical constituents.Flotation tests have been carried out, following different comminution flow sheets and adopting different modulating conditions in order to evaluate the influence of the following parameters:- collector concentration versus contaminants concentration (As minerals) in the froths;- kind and quantity of the frothing agent to maximise mineral recovery in the froths;- kind and quantity of the modulating agents to maximise the selectivity of the process;- conditioning modalities in order to obtain a suitable dispersion of fines and avoid segregation of Asbearing particles together with colemanite ones;- solid/liquid ratio of the pulp to minimise the water flow into the plant.Information obtained from SEM analysis has been adopted to evaluate segregation phenomena in pulp and in flotation products."

Numerous orphaned strip mines and old refuse piles scar the landscape, contributing to stream pollution and degradation of the natural environment. Field experiments to reclaim acidic surface-mined spoil and refuse banks with fly ash from bituminous coal-fired powerplants were conducted at several sites in West Virginia. Fly ash served as a neutralizing agent and soil amendment, permitting vegetation of waste lands and disposal of large quantities of ash. Reclamation of land by this method is estimated to cost about $300 per acre of leveled site, depending upon the topography of the land and quality and availability of the fly ash.

JW Aluminum use lean and Six Sigma techniques to continuously improve their target of reliable, repeatable and reproducible (3R) manufacturing. Six Sigma’s second stage gate, known as "Measure" involves identification and qualifying appropriate measuring systems. Metal quality (inclusions) are known in the industry to be an important element in 3R casting. The measurement of inclusions at JW Aluminum historically depended on outside vendors. In order to establish real time inclusion measurement ability within JW Aluminum, inclusion measurement systems in the marketplace were investigated. The qualification of a MetalVision MV20/20 ultrasonic inclusion analyzer are discussed as well as the subsequent application of the system in melting and casting improvement projects.

The depletion of higher grade mineral reserves will accelerate the trend toward production from progressively larger and lower grade deposits. The discovery of adequate reserves of leaner ores will require the development of improved exploration techniques with a greater depth range. The principal challenges to the Canadian mining industry are to find the mineral resources required to meet fast growing world demand and to develop mining methods and equipment to ensure production costs which will strengthen our position in export markets in the face of in-creasing world competition. The challenges cannot be met without intensive efforts to attract more technical men to the industry and to improve their training.

The Copper Creek area, part of the Bunker Hill District, Pinal County, Arizona, lies within the southwest porphyry copper province of North America at the intersection of a northwest trend and an east-northeast trend of Laramide porphyry copper deposits. The Copper Creek area has been mined and explored for copper and molybdenum since the early 1900?s. The majority of this work focused on the more than 400 surface exposed breccia bodies. In the 1960 to 1970?s deeper drilling discovered a deep porphyry copper-like setting. Redhawk Copper currently has NI 43-101 compliant resources of about 0.652 billion pounds of measured and indicated and 2.745 billion pounds of inferred copper equivalent in breccia hosted and porphyry style deposits. "AbstractA resumé of aerial radiation survey studies performed by and for Eldorado Mining and Refining, Limited, since 1943 is presented. Flight tests were initiated in 1947 and were followed .by intensified use and study of Geiger counters and other radiation detectors. Development of an aerial scintillation counter began in 1948, but •a sensitive large crystal unit was not available for exploration purposes until 1950. Modifications of this unit have been used in all subsequent surveys.For the Eldorado detector, several limiting conditions were established for successful radioactivity detection, the most important being that natural vein exposures can only be assuredly detected .at distances less than 150 feet. Sedimentary and pegmatitic radioactive occurrences can be detected at much greater distances. A helicopter investigation technique appears to •have •a useful prospecting potential.IntroductionAerial radiation surveys were first proposed in the early 1940's. However, it was not until 1949 that airborne detectors were extensively used in the search for radioactive minerals. Eldorado has flown about 50,000 miles of exploration flights, exclusive of tests, using a variety of •detectors and aircraft. Considerable data have •been gathered for .the evaluation of the several techniques employed. Much of the early work was performed with the co-operation of the National Research Council of Canada ( 1). More recent work was done in conjunction with the Commercial Products Division of Atomic Energy of Canada, Limited. The Development Department of this latter corporation designed and built the scintillation counter used in recent Eldorado surveys."

Belt conveyors offer a reliable means and often do the most economical job for providing continuous bulk material transport, whenever the terrain permits their installation. The ore processing, construction and mining industries use belt conveyors to carry all types of material, from small to large tonnages. Most of the conveyors Fluor Mining & Metals, Inc. designs for metallurgical plants are in the in-plant category, of limited length and medium tonnages, and use fabric carcass conveyor belting. Belt widths can range from 24 to 60 inches Generally, the layout and design of these belt conveyors present no unusual problems. However, calculations for belt tension and horsepower, design of materials transfers, and the sizings and layouts of belt pulley stations and their drives are time consuming.
