The West Kentucky Division of Island Creek Coal Company, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Occidental Petroleum Corporation, operates the new Hamilton Mine. It is located six miles West of Morganfield, Kentucky, in the Northwest section of Union County, adjacent to the Ohio River in Lock 50. On July 15, 1968, a unique new coal conveying system was put in operation. This system consists of eight conveyor units carrying coal from the bottom of the mine slope ultimately to barges on the Ohio River. It is over two miles in length and has a total of 3175 connected horsepower. The river loading conveyor is the longest 72" wide conveyor in operation in this country.

Despite increasing demand, the supply of silver is limited by its inadequate recovery from ores. Due to its scarcity in nature, its high ore variability and complex mineralogy of current silver deposits, its recovery by mineral froth flotation presents a real challenge for process engineers. A silver ore often contains significant amounts of five to ten different silver minerals and knowledge of the mineralogy is a necessary precursor to flotation testing. In this work, a complex silver ore was treated by using batch laboratory flotation, in an effort to find the best experimental conditions to obtain the optimal silver recovery. Mineralogical characterization of feed samples was conducted using a combination of tools, namely the mineral liberation analyzer (MLA) and inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), which indicated that most of the silver occurred as ?invisible? silver in pyrite. The pyrite assay of the ore was approximately 4%. The ore was processed in two flotation stages. The first stage, sulphide flotation, aimed to collect a sulphide mineral rich concentrate; then a non-sulphide flotation stage was performed by adding sodium sulphide and collectors to the remaining material in the cell, with the objective of obtaining a pyrite rich concentrate. To reach the target recovery of silver from this ore, various variables were altered. In the first stage: mixed collectors, activators, dispersants, and mainstream inert grinding were assessed. In the second stage, the conditions for sulphidization and subsequent flotation were both investigated. From the grade recovery curves for silver and sulphur it was possible to observe a similar metallurgical behavior for both elements, supporting the results given by the mineralogical characterization. Dust-related respiratory disease remains the major health concern in mining, and health agencies are proposing more stringent standards. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) is investigating techniques to continuously monitor respirable dust in real-time during the coal or ore extraction process. Continuous monitoring will allow mine operators to evaluate hazardous dust concentrations and adjust the operations to produce less dust. Mine instrumentation applications include machine-mounted and hand-held monitors, personal monitors, and area/environmental monitors. Six dust detection methods have been considered to meet application requirements. These are: light-scattering instruments, a smoke-particle detection technique, correlation of pressure drop across the collection filter with amount of dust deposited, the Tapered-Element Oscillating Microbalance (TEOM) instrument, a method that relates the amount of dust collected on a filter with the vibration of the filter, and beta attenuation measurement of dust. Studies to date have identified the TEOM instrument and the technique of correlating the amount of dust collected with the vibration ofthe filter as having the most promise for success. Development of the machine-mounted monitor is the highest research priority. The application options and progress to date in developing continuous monitoring instrumentation are presented.

Alaskan villages typically store a one-year supply of fuel to reduce significant delivery costs. Alaska Village Electric Cooperative (AVEC), an electric utility cooperative providing power to 51 Alaska villages, has made a concerted effort to upgrade and improve their undersized and aging facilities. The Village of Stebbins, located south of Nome on Norton Sound is receiving upgrades to its AVEC bulk fuel facilities. Stebbins offered unique challenges from a foundations perspective due to the nature of the soil. The geotechnical investigation found the soil below roughly a third of the footprint of the bulk fuel facility to be thawed with seasonal freezing and the remainder was found to be warm permafrost with ground temperatures of between 30°F and 32°F. This is a unique and challenging arctic engineering design issue because foundations are designed differently for frozen ground conditions. Driven piles were selected because of site constraints, such as the design flood elevation and the change from thawed to frozen ground conditions. The pile design specified that the pile embedment depths would be selected based on the results of pile driving analyzer (PDA) testing during construction in the thawed ground and maintained within the frozen ground portion of the footprint. Difficulties during pile driving in the frozen ground resulted in several piles becoming severely damaged, requiring subsequent removal. This resulted in a reevaluation of the means and methods for pile installation. Additional fieldwork was performed to further characterize the subsurface soils and their frozen nature. Options for installation of piles in difficult areas were evaluated including ground thawing, predrilling, and reducing embedment depths. Presented within this paper are the findings from the initial and subsequent field explorations, discussion of the design methodology, and the decisions that led to successful installation of piles at this challenging remote village.

"The methods of heap leaching are considered to be the most promising for the low-grade copper-nickel raw materials. The article presents intensification capabilities of the process. Objects of research: the low-grade copper-nickel ores of Moncheplutone deposits (Moroshkovoye Lake, Nyud Terrasa, Nittis-Kumuzh’ya-Travyanaya (NKT), as well as the copper-nickel ore dressing tailings of the “Kola MMC” JSC. The following directions for the intensification of the low-grade copper-nickel raw materials heap leaching have been considered: preliminary electric pulse destruction (EPD) of ore; ore crushing and further sulfuric acid agglomeration. The impact of sulfuric acid concentration (1-3%) on the extraction of non-ferrous metals kinetics from the copper-nickel ore dressing tailings under various conditions of the percolation leaching has been studied. INTRODUCTION The low-grade grade sulfide ores at the abandoned and producing deposits, overburden rocks, mill tailings and non-ferrous slag are thought to be one of the large-scale sources for non-ferrous metals, on the one hand. On the other hand, they are known to be the subjects of emergency environmental danger. For this reason, the use of mine dumps and tailings, as well as the remained ores left in the ground as raw products, and at the same time decreasing the load on environment, are considered to be the pressing ecological and economic issue (Chanturia et al., 2012). Methods of heap hydrometallurgical and bacterial leaching are sure to be potentially productive for processing such low-grade and technogenic raw materials (Petersen, 2016). The early studies of hydrometallurgical method possibility to process copper-nickel ores of the Murmansk region deposits were launched in the seventies of the previous century (Golovko et al., 1978). For referencing purposes, the main types of impregnated ores from the deposits Zhdanovskoye, Kaula, Sopchinsky Plast and Lovnoozerskoye were selected. The metal content varied, as %: 0.46-1.49 of nickel, 0.01-0.62 of copper. In the first experiments, the solution containing 150g/l of H2SO4 and 135g/l of NaCl, was used in the capacity of leaching reagent. The possibility of underground metals leaching from the ores of the Lovnoozerskoye deposit was justified due to the performed laboratory and further large-sized tests."

"Mineral processing unit models require information on particulate properties such as particle size, solids flowrate and mineralogical composition to model their operations. Process models that describe the separation process can be classified based on the level of information required from the ore, i.e. the feed stream to the separating unit. The most comprehensive level of mineral processing models is the particle-based modelling approach. Particle based modelling describes a modelling approach where mineral composition, mineral liberation and textural information of particles making up the process streams is used in modelling. The advantage of this approach is that all model streams carry particle level information (size, liberation, shape). This information is obtained by applying automated mineralogy techniques such as Quantitative Evaluation of Minerals by Scanning Electron Microscopy (QEMSCAN) analysis which provide accurate and detailed information on process stream particle properties. Currently the use of liberation information in modelling and simulation is rare, due to the limited number of separation models that liberation data as input. The objective of this study is to develop a particle based model for a dry magnetic separator, where mineralogical information is used directly to simulate a dry magnetic separator operation. Magnetic separation tests were carried out on high, medium and low grade magnetite ores using a laboratory magnetic separator. Streams from the separator were sampled and sized for chemical and liberation analyses. A sized mass and elemental balance around the magnetic separator was carried out. The elemental assays of each stream were converted to mineral quantities and a sized mineral balance was done. QEMSCAN measured liberation data was reconciled to the mineral balance based on mineral quantities obtained from chemical assays. This was followed by the development of a particle based model that calculates the trajectory of a single particle based on its mineral composition and textural properties. The model was tested on experimental data and was able to predict the effect of variation in process feed stream mineralogical attributes (liberation, grade, particle size) on magnetic separation performance. Results of this study highlight the benefits of the particle based modelling approach. INTRODUCTION The extraction of mineral values from ore requires liberation of the value minerals from the gangue followed by their separation. Liberation is achieved by size reduction operations (Desmond, 2008; Fuerstenau and Abouzeid, 2002). Separation of gangue material from value mineral takes place in various mineral upgrading stages such as classification, magnetic separation and flotation. In these concentration stages value minerals are separated from gangue minerals based on the physical properties of the ore particles making up the feed such as size, liberation, volume of magnetic material and density. The success of separation is related to the liberation of the feed particles, the performance of the separation technology applied, as well as the inherent characteristics of the feed material (Leißner et al., 2013)."

"The world’s largest tunnel boring machine (TBM), at the time of her launch in 2012, the TBM locally referred to as “Bertha,” is incapacitated due to mechanical failure. Bertha’s stoppage places her 25m below the surface between the aged Alaskan Way Viaduct and the failing Seattle Seawall. Accessing Bertha with a vertical shaft provides the best approach to access all facets needed for repairs and will allow the full removal of Bertha’s cutter head and related inner workings. Due to the limited area above the tunnel alignment and physical constraints created by existing infrastructure, the dimensions of the otherwise symmetrical shaft are heavily impacted, thereby requiring special attention to design and layout. Consequently, the shaft design required a combination of 3m, 2.5m, 2.2m, 1.5m and 1m diameter unreinforced drilled secant piles coupled with various ground improvement techniques and dewatering, to fully satisfy the shoring design requirements. This paper will describe the shaft installation procedures, equipment used and pitfalls encountered while undertaking access shaft construction of this magnitude. INTRODUCTION Mining on Seattle’s SR99 tunnel began in July of 2013. Initial mining progressed slowly through a 4.5 m thick fiber-reinforced concrete headwall before immediately entering the first of three planned safe havens. Once through the headwall and safe haven the machine would move through roughly 122 lineal meters of jet grout improved soil at a rate of slightly over 1.6 m per day. It was anticipated that once mining has passed through the improved area, “Bertha” – now the world’s 2nd largest tunnel boring machine (TBM), would be moving at a rate of almost 11 m per day. By the end of October 2013, Bertha had mined roughly 131 m, averaging 1.4 m per day, and had begun mining within native soils. By the start of December 2013, tunneling had reached the 244 m mark and Bertha was now averaging 3.6 m per day, achieving as much as 12.8 m of progress on given days. Unfortunately, on December 6th, 2013, Bertha began to stumble and all progress quickly came to a halt. Initial reports stated an obstruction had stopped Bertha in her tracks. The preliminary investigation involved installation of 10 deep dewatering wells to reduce the hydrostatic pressure within the ground around the TBM, to allow the contractor’s personnel to inspect the cutter head from within and also to investigate for the presence of obstructions at the face of the cutter head. During inspection, the contractor’s crews found fragments of steel pipe entangled in the cutter head. The steel was apparently from an abandoned 254 mm diameter monitoring well casing, previously installed by WSDOT to monitor ground water conditions for the design and planning of this tunnel project. After the steel was removed from the cutter head and cleared from Bertha’s path, she attempted to move forward but was only able to generate a slow crawl."

This paper gives an account of the laboratory testing, plant testing and final inclusion of the two-stage sulphuric acid leaching process in the Milliken mill. Operational results for September, 1962, are presented, showing a uranium extraction of 95.5 per cent, with a saving of some 16 lbs. of 100 per cent H~S04 and some 9 lbs. of lime per ton milled. Methods for effecting further improvements in the process are indicated. HISTORY P RIOR to the incorporation of two-stage leaching, the process for the treatment of uranium ores at Milliken consisted of a single-stage sulphuric acid leach, followed by a solution recovery step involving washing in thickeners and two-stage filtration. The thickener overflow solution was subsequently concentrated and purified by ion exchange, and the uranium was recovered, by two-stage precipitation, as ammonium diuranate. Researchers at Montana Tech are investigating the potential for developing trees tolerable to degraded un-reclaimed mine site tailings and soils as a solution to re-establishing long-term tree growth on those sites. This project involves growing tree seedlings from seeds planted in the degraded mine tailings and soils in which they will eventually be planted. The outcome of the project is expected to lead to a successful solution for re-establishing tree growth in degraded tailings and soils in Butte, Montana with minimal post-planting human intervention. Work conducted on the project to date has shown successful growth of seedlings in degraded tailings and soils. INTRODUCTION In an effort to improve Butte Area One natural resources, this research project is working to help restore tree growth in the Butte Priority Soils Operable Unit Boundary (BPSOU) (Opoku-Ware, et al 2018). Research by Blicker, et al (2003) found that, the BPSOU, which is part of the Silver Bow Creek/Butte Area National Priorities List (Superfund) Site within and near Butte, Montana has multiple historic mining sites situated entirely within the urban setting of Butte. Mine wastes and mill tailings, accumulated from over 100 years of gold, silver, and especially copper mining are dispersed throughout Butte, posing health risks to human and environmental receptors. Stabilization of tailings sites is needed to control fugitive dust, prevent run-off of toxic material resulting in subsequent sediment deposition in streams, reducing the volume of water seepage through acidic and heavy metal contaminated material, and improving land productivity and aesthetic values (Watkin and Watkin, 1982). If successful, the project will help restore water quality and maintain stream flow in Silver Bow Creek where it flows through Butte Area One. Trees native to Butte are being grown to seedlings in a greenhouse located on Montana Tech’s campus which will be planted in degraded soils located within the BPSOU. Growing trees is expected to help restore vegetative ground cover within the watershed contributing to stream flow in Silver Bow Creek. The trees will prevent soil and tailings from eroding and being deposited in Silver Bow Creek where they could degrade water quality and choke stream flow. The project combines research with tree seedling growth to provide a resource for Butte that could produce thousands of tree seedlings each year adapted to the harsh climate, soil, and tailings conditions that exist in the BPSOU where they will grow. It is anticipated that the trees developed by the project will have the capability for long-term survival and growth because they will be germinated and grown into seedlings in the degraded soils and tailings collected from the BPSOU where they will be planted. Soils and tailings collected for the project have been evaluated to determine if they lack nutrients or contain substances potentially toxic to the long-term growth and survival of the trees. Toxic levels of metals, high concentrations of soluble salts, extremes in pH, nutrient deficiencies and imbalances, surface crusting, high bulk density, low infiltration rates, high surface temperatures, low cation exchange capacity, restricted microbial activity, low water retention, harsh climatic conditions and surface particle movement are some of the traits of mine tailings sites that restrict revegetation efforts (Barth, 1986).

"From 1978, the direct process for the smelting of chalcocite concentrates in a flash furnace by the Outokumpu method has been applied at the Glogów II copper smelter. The chemical composition of these concentrates make it necessary to control the process very strictly. In this paper, the method for controlling and measuring the main technological parameters of the copper production by flash smelting is being presented. It includes the determination of the chemical composition of the concentrate, its grain structure, the temperature of liquid products of the process, oxygen content in process gases, as well as lead concentration in copper and copper concentration in slag.The main process parameters are determined from the mass and energy balances. The relations between parameters, such as an effect of grain structure of a concentrate on oxygen and oil consumption, and dependence of chemical composition of a concentrate on capacity and products quality are discussed. 1. IntroductionThe Polish copper concentrates, as most concentrates occurring worldwide, contain from 18% to 30% Cu, and less sulphur (7-11%) and iron (2-5%). The main copper-bearing mineral contained in the concentrates is chalcocite, while bornite and chalcopyrite are present in smaller quantities. Moreover, the organic carbon (5-7.5%), arsenic (0.05-0.3%) and lead (1.2-3.0%) are also contained in the concentrates. The gangue consists mainly of silica, aluminosilicates, calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate. Their proportions make the addition of slag-forming agents unnecessary.The composition of Polish concentrates, especially their low iron content, allows their application in the direct flash smelting process for blister copper production. Low sulphur content is the factor which determines the necessity of oxygen application in this process."

Heat-capacity measurements were made over the range 8° to 350° K on beryllium sulfate dihydrate and beryllium sulfate tetrahydrate using an adiabatic calorimeter. No anomalies were noted in the curve for either compound. Smooth values of heat capacity, entropy, enthalpy function, and free-energy function were calculated from the heat-capacity data at 10° K intervals and at 273.15° and 298.15° K. The entropy values calculated at 298.15° K were 39.01 ± 0.12 entropy units (eu) for the dihydrate and 55.68 ± 0.17 eu for the tetrahydrate.

MOIL Limited is operating 7 underground and 3 opencast mines in central India and producing annually more than 1.2 million tonnes of various grades of manganese ore. The underground mines are operating at shallow - 90 m at Munsar mine to moderate - 353 m at Balaghat mine below the surface with horizontal cut and fill (HCF) or its variant method of stoping with post filling by hydraulic sand stowing. The Munsar mine is being worked underground since 1903. The opencast mining is presently stopped. The ore body below the opencast quarry is geological continuity of the area excavated in past by opencast method of mining. The underground mining is done through the adit in three levels i.e. 270’L, 220’L, 170’L and by incline in western part of the property at 70’L. The horizontal drift development has been developed in the manganese ore body with sill drive of 5 m above the sill pillar in lower level at 70’L and barrier pillar of 5 m thickness is left for protection of upper level at 170’L. Valuable mineral has been locked in sill pillar and therefore rock mechanics investigations have been carried out. On the basis of study now the drift development has been carried out in footwall rock at 70’L, (-) 30’L and below levels and it has improved the mineable manganese ore by about 20%. In this modified HCF stope design, an alternative fill material in place of sand, which has been developed in house by use of overburden (OB) material after treatment, has been used for hydraulic stowing. The experimental trials find out that the alternative fill material of OB is more compact and forming a non expansion floor for the men and machines in the stope. This will certainly help in the introduction of mobile underground mining equipment for drilling in the stopes and mechanical mucking, transportation and loading of the ROM. The paper presents rock mechanics investigations and future use of alternative fill material of OB for better safety and productivity at Munsar Mine of MOIL. In the Yellowknife geologic province, 2,600-million-year-old granites are cut by three sets of diabase or gabbro dyke : (1) large dykes striking 70°E to E-W, (2) rare dykes striking N-S to 30°E and (3) an abundant swarm striking N 10°-300W. Preliminary potassium-argon dating has been carried out on whole-rock samples of the chilled margins and coarse centers of the dykes, and on mineral separates from the dykes and contact aureoles. Data from seventeen dated samples suggest that the dyke sets were intruded during three periods of basaltic magmatism -2,200, 1,500 and 1000 million years ago. The two earlier periods closely follow the time of emplacement of granites in the Yellowknife and Churchill geologic provinces. The latest diabase dykes occurring in the Yellowknife province are temporally related to a widespread basaltic magmatism, for which the term Keweenawan is not appropriate. The pockets of high silica blue dust across the entire high grade hematite deposits in the Bailadila sector bothers the excavation activity due their iron content, which is higher than the threshold value specified by the Indian Bureau of Mines and the agony of stacking them separately due to their fragile & powdery nature. The physical nature of blue dust and its negligible alumina content makes these a potential source of hematite, which is a blessing in disguise. As most of the particles are in the form of an independent grain making it appropriately suitable feed for dry magnetic separation and thus the dry beneficiation has turned a bane into boon by enabling to produce concentrate either suitable for using as DSO or amenable for blending. The emphasis on carrying out dry beneficiation studies in the present context serves the purpose of mineral conservation, mitigates the issues of excavation and stacking as well as conservation of water resource. This paper describes the laboratory and pilot scale dry beneficiation studies carried out on blue dust of 48 – 60%Fe and Silica up to 30% at 25 Kg/hour to 400 Kg/hour, resulting in production of concentrate assaying 60 – 65%Fe. INTRODUCTION High silica blue dust (HSBD) is associated with Banded Hematite Quartzite (BHQ) and is available in abundance in various pockets across the Iron ore body in the Bailadila region of Chhattisgarh state. High Silica Blue dust occurs in the form of free granular particles and also as friable lumps. The chemical quality of this falls under sub-grade category (45 – 55%Fe) and as per the guidelines of Indian Bureau of Mines, these are to be stacked and conserved as future resources of Iron if it can’t be utilized in the present circumstances. Due to its friable nature, stacking of HSBD is a challenge and it is also compounding the problem by polluting the air under high velocity wind conditions. Because of its physical nature and occurrence in pockets pose challenge to systematic mining. The existing processing set up of the operating mines is designed to treat either Direct Shipping ore (DSO) or Run-of-Mine (ROM) have grade >60% Fe. The present practice of beneficiating iron ore fines (<1 mm) comprise combination of two or more processes such as desliming, hydraulic classification, magnetic separation and flotation apart from requirement of grinding depending on liberation characteristics. The HSBD which is predominantly occur as free granular particles, is significantly low in its alumina content. This gives us an opportunity to utilize them by exploring a suitable beneficiation process so that the concentrate produced can be used as a sweetener for alumina rich iron ore/concentrate. Thus, in the present study, an attempt has been made to adopt dry high intensity magnetic separation technique to explore the amenability of the high silica blue dust for beneficiation.

"The rapid developments in computer vision and computational resources are creating new possibilities for the use of machine vision systems for industrial control. A number of commercial image analysis systems exist, and research into improved measurements of froth performance is ongoing. An integral part of the implementation of these systems is the validation of the relationship between image analysis measurements and flotation cell performance. This paper discusses the factors affecting concentrate flow and presents the results obtained from one such system with respect to its ability to estimate the flow of concentrate from a flotation cell.The relationship between froth flow speed and the rate of recovery of concentrate from a flotation cell was investigated on two industrial operations, both processing PGM (Platinum Group Metal) bearing ores. Results are presented that show a relationship between froth flow speed and concentrate yield."

"Minnesota has robust reclamation standards and have proven results in the taconite mining industry. Reclamation of overburden spoils, lean ore spoils and fine tailings from taconite production has generally been successful on the Iron Range, using a low input standard reclamation practice. Success at reestablishing vegetation on these landscapes is likely due to fairly favorable chemical and physical properties (e.g., few limitations due to acidic generating materials, metal toxicities and water and nutrient holding capacities). However, coarse tailings reclamation has proven more difficult, presumably due to lower nutrients and challenges with moisture holding capacities. Research efforts conducted since 1990 have struggled to develop a reclamation strategy for coarse tailings that meets the Minnesota Mineland Reclamation Rules, Chapter 6130. However, new breakthroughs in scram mining technologies are producing fine and coarse tailings that have not been encountered nor reclaimed in northern Minnesota. Scram mining in Minnesota is defined as those mining operations that produce natural iron ore concentrates. Innovative research is underway to investigate and determine successful reclamation strategies to reclaim scram mining tailings from these scram mining operations. The research program is conducted through collaboration with SEH, Prairie Restorations, Inc. (PRI) and Mining Resources, LLC with funding support from the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Laurentian Vision Partnership minescapes grant program.The research program was divided into three phases:Phase I. Bench-scale testing to identify successful treatments to reclaim and restore scram tailings through evaluating surface soils amendments, viable seed mixes and plant germination, growth and densities. Phase I was completed in early 2015.Phase II. Field-scale pilot trial to test larger scale effectiveness of the treatments deemed successful in Phase I and test various vegetative assemblages and planting techniques focused on the unique challenges with scram tailing basins. Phase II was completed in late 2016 with a summary monitoring report.Phase III. Produce a technical report of results for the research undertaken in this study, as well as compile prior reclamation results used during previous Minnesota iron mining reclamation projects on tailings basin applications. Phase III was completed in 2017 with a summary monitoring report and recommendations."

"INTRODUCTION Mining is a fundamental part of the historical and economic development of a country. In Colombia, this is reflected from pre-Columbian jewelery, to being now one of the first exporters of coal worldwide, in 2017, the Colombian mining sector contributed approximately 6% of GDP (Ministerio de Minas y Energía, 2017). Coal, nickel, gold, platinum, emeralds, limestone, salt, phosphate rock, clays, siliceous sands and to a lesser extent copper, manganese, magnesite, barite, gypsum and various types of ornamental rocks, among others are produced (UPME, 2016). The contributions of mining activity in the economic dimension is more measurable, on the contrary in other dimensions, as the social and environmental, for this, every day there are new proposals and tools oriented to strengthen how to evaluate the contributions in terms of the sustainability and responsibility, with the aim of quantifying, concreting and non-utopian, to improve the life quality of a community and not only to comply with reporting and gaining prestige. Colombia has a generalized increase in the mining sector where the levels of informality and illegality are evident only 10% of mining activity is legal (UPME, 2014), also, the mining sector is accused of human rights violations, high levels of inequality, poverty and the affectation of ecosystems due to bad environmental management, among other situations (ACNUDH Colombia, 2015). This problem has generated rejection to the realization of the mining activity in many places of Colombia. At this point, it is important to clarify this problem is more complex, different actors are involved in this conflict, but it is an evidence that is needed a sustainability model for specific realities such as the Colombian mining. This situation in the current mining activity, is similar to the chemical industry situation three decades ago, because of an extensive problem in relation to repeated work accidents, natural disasters and indications as a highly polluting and unsustainable industry, with the aim of improving, not only this public perception, but also in the way of carrying out the business activity. Thus, in 1985, the Canadian Chemical Producers Association released the Responsible Care Program (RCP) (ICCA, 2015). Being aware that companies were responsible for the affected lives in some way by the operation and needed to improve workers safety, environmental protection and most importantly how legal persons should comply with the law, but go beyond this. RCP is most recognized sustainability initiative in the chemical sector, companies associated are recognized for having high quality standards, continuous improvement, visibility, corporate ethics, environmental and social management (ACC, 2015). In addition, to meeting the objectives is set out the creation of a model that increasing reputational sector levels. This initiative is considered to be a worldwide successful case of reporting corporate responsibility indicators and contributions to sustainability from the industry sector to local development (BASF Group, 2016)."

Soil mixing and jet grouting have been widely used to support heavy structures such as tanks, cement silos, and storage buildings. Although the installation methods vary between soil mixing and jet grouting, the end product of soil-cement columns behaves similarly in supporting structure loads. In many cases, soil-cement mass treatment offers the owner savings over driven/drilled piles. This paper discusses the design methodology, production work, and quality control, with supporting figures, of a recent large complex tank farm project. The project consisted of constructing six above-ground steel storage tanks and an approximately 700-foot-long fill slope. The tank farm site is located in an industrial area of southern California, with highly variable subsurface conditions consisting of compressible soils and buried construction debris. The compressible soils necessitated that the new tanks be supported on deep foundations. A test pile program performed previously at the site showed that conventional driven concrete piles were not feasible because of buried construction debris, therefore a soilcrete system was proposed. Site design included evaluating the total and differential settlement and column group bearing capacity under both static and seismic loads. Extensive field and laboratory testing confirmed the design soil-cement strength and modulus of both the soil mixed and jet grouted soil-cement columns. The project operation and quality control programs are also included in this paper.

DURING the twentieth century Canadians have been steadily improving their standard of living. Originally, this improvement depended almost entirely upon the export of basic raw materials and a triangular system of trade with Great Britain and the United States. However, since the Second World War, Canadian living standards have improved still further because of the very rapid d0evelopment of secondary industries. As a result of this development, the present demand for scientists and engineers exceeds the supply, and interest in scientific research has never been greater. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the professional and economic status of Canadian scientists and engineers over the past half century. GROWTH OF RESEARCH It is difficult to determine accurately the amount of scientific research conducted in Canada since 1900. However, ?prior to World War I, it was limited and was connected mainly with primary industries and health. Government departments did some; university science faculties, overloaded with teaching responsibilities, did a little; and industry, which consisted mainly of subsidiaries of American and British firms, depended chiefy upon foreign sources for new information.
