The purpose of this paper is to analyze the behavior of oil securities during the six-year period January 1932 through December 1937. This period was selected because of its varied character. It includes the depths of the depression, the broad and spasmodic recovery, and the recession collapse. The first part of the analysis is devoted to the correlation of a number of economic factors with an index of 13 oil stocks. The second part is a comparison of the different,ial behavior of 6 oil stocks. The relationships developed here are only a few of many that might be considered in a complete analysis. The stock market is regarded as a barometer of business confidence and as such exerts an important influence upon corporate policies, particularly upon industrial expansion. The complex and continuously changing nature of its price structure, the ebb and flow of influences and the effects of impacts require dynamic rather than static analysis. When treated in this way, many of the important fluctuations in market prices and changes in the relationships between securities appear quite logical. The market for oil securities has varied widely in recent years. The Standard Statistics index of 13 oil stocks made a bull market peak of 166.7 in September 1929. The collapse of the boom and the ensuing bear market finally carried the index down to a low of 36.4 in June 1932. From this point oil stocks made an irregular recovery; they reached a top at 139.7 in March 1937, and after maintaining this approximate level through August, declined precipitously to 93.3 in December 1937. The prices of these 13 oil stocks have gone up and down under the influence of numberless variables. These variables are of two kinds, those external to the industry, and those that are solely due to its internal condition. The external factors are political, social, and economic, both domestic and foreign. These are the influences that induce the ebb and flow of all prices in general and security prices in particular. Among the internal factors are the regulation of industry, the development of new reserves and processes, and the disequilibrium due to lack of balance between supply and demand. Some of the simpler relationships are examined in this paper.

There is an ever-increasing demand for furnaces with controlled atmosphere, due to the large quantities of steel being used in the automotive industry, such as the high-chromium stainless irons, the 18 Cr, 8 Ni stainless iron and low-carbon steel sheets. The difficulties involved in the annealing of such materials, if they are to be kept absolutely free from oxidation, are many. It is possible to bright-anneal these steels in small laboratory hydrogen furnaces, using specially purified hydrogen and taking some additional precautions. In the first place, the insulation, usually of alumina or magnesia, holds small amounts of water vapor, which it is almost impossible to remove completely. Secondly, there is always condensataion of water vapor in the cooling chambers of such furnaces, and with the continuous circulation of the hydrogen gas in the furnace, the water vapor is carried from the cooling chamber back into the heating chamber. This water vapor oxidizes the charge. Lastly, the supply of moisture is made sure by the diffusion of small amounts of air from the atmosphere into the furnace against the pressure of the hydrogen. The oxygen combines with the hydrogen and forms more water. Under such conditions there is little gained by using specially purified gas, because it becomes contaminated after reaching the furnace. Low-carbon Steel If a sheet of low-carbon steel is annealed in such a furnace at 750" C. and allowed to cool with the furnace, an adequate flow of purified hydrogen being maintained all of the time, the steel will come out with a very thin coating of blue oxide. If a similar sheet is annealed at the same temperature and quickly pushed into the cooling chamber, it will come out nearly bright, or perhaps with only the edges slightly discolored. It is difficult to get a piece of steel through a furnace of this type with an absolutely bright surface. This is due to the fact that there are always traces of oxygen or water vapor in the furnace. When the steel is allowed to cool with the furnace, it reaches a critical temperature where the affinity of iron for oxygen is greater than that of hydrogen for oxygen, and the steel comes out discolored. Discussion of the paper of F. L. Bosqui, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 101, May, 1915, pp. 997 to 1033. H. A. WHITE, Springs, Transvaal (communication to the Secretary*). -It is, as the author points out in his valuable paper, a, fact, that in many plants the "trommel washings" are allowed to become eyesores, but the simpler system of pumping the entire product direct to the tube-mill circuit will avoid the extra expense of separation and small-scale treatment when one considers the relative distance of the points and the proportionately small amount of water. It is a matter of record that in stamp batteries the increase of weight has been developed concurrently with the increased use of tube mills, but independently and on its own merits. The satisfactory duty, excellent running time, and freedom from breakages in the newer mills, such as the Modder Deep, with 2,000-1b. stamps, will probably go far in removing some of the conservative prejudices mentioned by Mr. Bosqui. The success of the City Deep trial of the Nissen stamp cannot be entirely attributed to better feed distribution and discharge effects (published experiments on two-face discharge mortar boxes showed no advantages). Attention is directed to the treatment costs given by the author both before and after the increased capacity resulting from the addition of 16 Nissen stamps at Modder B. It will be observed that the only item of cost resisting the tendency to reduction caused by increased tonnage is that of milling, which has risen 1.3c. With reference to the provision for amalgamation in the new plans, it seems obvious that a great loss of head would be eliminated by passing the tube cone overflow over a separate top series of plates; three at the top and three at the bottom will effect the maximum amalgamation. This plan is followed at the Princess Estate and Gold Mining Co., Ltd., Modderfontein Deep Levels, Ltd., and Geduld Proprietary. Mines, Ltd., but elsewhere reliance is placed upon ample cone capacity and the underflow only is passed over three plates after going through the tube mill, while the overflow is passed direct to the cyanide works; both methods avoid the largely unnecessary elevation of considerable quantities of water, fine sand and slime involved in Mr. Bosqui's scheme.

INTRODUCTION The Kiirunavaara iron ore mine is situated in northern Sweden about 150 km north of the Arctic Circle. The ore body has a sheetlike shape, stretches about 4000 m N-S dipping 60°E and has an average width of 85 m. The ore body is known to a depth of more than 1500 m. Mining at present has reached a depth of about 500 m. The mineral is a magnetite containing 66-68% Fe. The ore body was originally mined as an open pit from 1900-1957. From then on the mining method has been sublevel caving. Production for the last few years has been 20-25 million tons /year. Sublevel caving is a mining method with many merits. One of the most valuable is the ability of using a high degree of mechanization. Today, 25 years after sublevel caving was introduced at Kiirunavaara, the advantages of the method have been more or less exhausted, and the disadvantages are more obvious as the rock pressure increases with depth. One of the disadvantages is the high degree of waste rock in the hoisted ore. Today the waste rock content is about 25% by weight of which 20% comes from the caved rock. Second, we are calculating a relatively high loss of ore (20%). Third, selectivity is unsatisfactory when mining different grades of ore. Field testing sublevel shrinkage caving (MSTM) is primarily aimed at lowering the content of waste rock compared to sublevel caving. ECONOMIC TARGET A simple calculation shows that if the waste rock content can be lowered from 25 to 15% the operational costs of mining will be lowered by about 40 million SEK/year (US $9 million) at a production level of 20 million tons/ year. A 15% waste content is the target of the field test. In the long range a decrease in waste rock dilution will mean lower investment costs for deeper levels. DESCRIPTION OF THE MSTM MINING METHOD One reason for decision to carry out the field test was that with MSTM the development drifts from sublevel caving could be utilized and thus the project could start without delay. The only additional development work needed was the loading level. Fig. 2 shows a profile through the MSTM area 66-68% Fe. and Fig. 3 shows the loading level.

Progress on the earth depends to a large extent upon the rapid interchange of ideas and commodities between the various nations of the world. The smooth flow of commerce, by which these ideas and commodities move, is accelerated by accurate and complete maps of the various land and water areas of the earth. The production of accurate maps depends upon a complete knowledge of the figure and dimensions of the object to be charted, therefore a knowledge of the shape of the earth is a prime necessity for accurate charting purposes. Gravity observations were first undertaken to aid in determining the shape of the earth so that the geodetic surveys of its land and water areas might be more accurately connected to form an undistorted map. A large part of the earth's surface is water and it is therefore necessary to get gravity values at sea as well as on land before a complete and accurate figure of the earth can be determined. Dr. F. A. Vening Meinesz, of Holland, was the first scientist to perfect a pendulum instrument that would accurately measure gravity at sea. He had previously developed a multiple pendulum apparatus for measuring gravity upon swampy and unstable land areas in Holland and it was therefore quite natural that he should adapt the instrument to give accurate results upon a still more unstable support, the surface of the sea. His instrument as perfected gives satisfactory results when mounted in gimbals on any vessel where the roll and pitch are not more than about 5" and where the vibrations from rotating machinery and wave action are not large enough to cause the pendulums to shift on the knife-edges. This degree of stability can be obtained on surface craft only in protected waters or on very calm days. Therefore, Dr. Meinesz mounted his instrument in a submarine so that he could submerge below the disturbed surface waters and get the desired stability in nearly any kind of weather by simply diving to greater depths. Most of the gravity-at-sea work has been done with a Meinesz instrument and a very large number of the observations have been made by Dr. Meinesz himself. The upper Arkansas River south of Leadville, Colorado, USA, contains deposits of fluvial tailings from historical mining operations in the Leadville area. These deposits are possible non-point sources of acid and metal contamination to surface- and ground-water systems. We used stable-metal isotopes to help ascertain metal retention and release mechanisms that influence metal transport from the deposits to shallow ground-water systems. To accomplish this, we excavated an intact core from a small fluvial tailings deposit and performed laboratory column experiments to examine the amount of metals leaching through the core. Deionised water was continuously applied to the top of the core, and effluent was collected from the bottom of the core for a period of about two months. Three saturation conditions were used, including unsaturated, partially saturated, and fully saturated. Reducing conditions developed upon partial and complete saturation of the core. During the unsaturated leaching phase, core effluents were acidic (pH 2.8 - 3.5) and contained elevated metal concentrations. During a portion of the unsaturated leaching phase, stable-metal isotope spikes and conservative tracers were simultaneously applied to the top of the core. The isotopes provide a means to delineate metal behaviour within the core. During the unsaturated leaching phase, the isotope spikes did not exhibit breakthrough with simultaneously added conservative tracers. However, some of the stable-metal isotope spikes did break through when reducing conditions occurred in the core (during the partial- and completesaturation conditions). In this paper, we use Cd as an example of the utility of stable-metal isotopes in geochemical studies. In the case of Cd, after the core was partially saturated, the 111Cd spike was released as evidenced by a change in the Cd isotope ratios in the effluent. This release continued during the fully saturated leaching phase, however, the total Cd concentration did not increase. These results suggest that the 111Cd spike was retained inside the core during the unsaturated leaching phase, and only partially released as reducing conditions developed. Results from this core-leaching experiment indicate there is a large reservoir of water-soluble material within the fluvial tailings deposit, which yields elevated metal concentrations and high acidity, and which may degrade adjacent ground- and surface-water quality. Use of stable metal isotopes in this study facilitated the determination of different metal-retention processes, metal-release processes, and metal sources in the fluvial tailings deposit in response to changing geochemical conditions.

The Similkameen mine is located about 100 miles east of Vancouver, British Columbia, and ten miles west of Princeton, where the mine personnel live. Princeton was the first town in the British Columbia interior, originally the home of Cree and Blackfoot Indians and later settled by men of the Hudson's Bay Company, miners, cattlemen, and others looking for gold. After gold, there were coal mines and then copper mines . The Granby Consolidated Mining Company, Limited, operated the Copper Mountain ore bodies from 1926 to 1930 and from 1937 to 1957, mining 34 million tons of about 170 copper ore, mainly from underground. In 1966, Newmont Mining Corporation acquired the Ingerbelle property on the west side of the Similkameen River. Newmont then purchased the assets of Granby and formed Similkameen Mining Company to develop and operate the Ingerbelle and Copper Mountain ore bodies on both sides of the Similkameen River canyon. The Ingerbelle and Copper Mountain ore bodies lie within rocks composed of andesite tuffs, agglomerates, and argillites. Chalcopyrite mineralization occurs as a dissemination. Original ore reserves were estimated at approximately 75 million tons grading 0.52% copper. Mining is carried out on a three-shift, seven-day-week schedule at a rate of about 60,000 tons of ore and waste per day with four 10 cu yd P & H 1900 shovels which mine and load a fleet of 100-ton Lectra Haul trucks. Among the unique features of the design and construction of the Similkameen project was the construction of 4. 5 miles (7. 24 km) of new Trans-Provincial No. 3 highway by the company to the specifications of the British Columbia Department of Highways. The old highway traversed the Ingerbelle pit area. Along the relocated highway is a 4, 000 ft (1219 m) long berm which conceals the mine pit. This area has been replanted and now looks like the original forest scenery. Another interesting feature is that the tailings from the concentrator flow by gravity over a 1000 ft (34% m) suspension bridge, which crosses the Similkameen River canyon then passes through a tunnel to the dam site, a distance of 59,000 ft (17,980 m) to the cyclone station. THE self-potential or spontaneous polarization method is one of the oldest in the field of electrical exploration. When applied in prospecting for ore bodies, it is one of the most rapid and inexpensive means of locating indications of ore bodies at shallow depth. Usually, the procedure is to survey the equipotential lines of the electrical field that is generated by the electrochemical activity of the ore near the ground-water level, and to localize the so-called negative centers or points of greatest negative anomaly. Another field procedure involves the measurement of potential differences along potential profiles, generally laid out at right angles to the assumed strike. Again, in such survey, the basis for establishing the presence of ore is the location of negative potential anomalies. The earlier writers on the subject, notably Schlumberger1 and R. G. Wells,2 did much to clarify the fundamental electrochemical phenomena involved. Interpretation of the field data, however, remained largely qualitative. In 1925, A. Petrovsky3 analyzed the relation between the shape of the potential anomaly curve and size and depth of an ore body by assuming the subsurface body to be a polarized sphere.4 Along similar lines of approach, Edge and Laby5 considered the ore body a dipping sheet with limited extent in the direction of strike, while Poldini6 based the theory on the assumption of a dipping bar. I.-ORE BODY CONSIDERED AS DIPOLE upon these earlier investigations and attempts, on the basis of the potential distribution of a polarized bar, to indicate certain characteristics of the anomaly curve that make possible the determination of depth, size and dip of a subsurface body. THE SPONTANEOUS POLARIZATION FIELD SET UP BY AN ORE BODY If a sulphide ore body is subjected to oxidation varying in degree in its upper and lower parts according to the difference in the concentration of oxygen within the surrounding medium, an electrical potential field is set up. The form and distribution of this field will be investigated herein with special reference to its components on the earth's surface. Under the simplifying assumption that the ore body may be considered as a dipole with the point sources QI and Q2 situated at its upper and lower ends (Fig. I), the potential of the spontaneous polarization at point P is given by the following equation:

WHEN the Age of Machinery was suddenly thrust upon civilization about the beginning of the nineteenth century, an unprecedented demand for mineral resources sprang up. This demand brought about the rapid development of the known ore deposits and the discovery of such other deposits as could be encountered by energetic and canny pros-pectors. Thus in the countries now reasonably ac-cessible nearly all orebodies have been located except those which are totally concealed even from the eyes and "senses" of experienced and expert prospectors. The high rate of exhaustion of known ore deposits and the necessity of looking farther and farther ahead for raw materials as a matter of insurance on the stu-pendous capital outlays involved in mining, develop-ment, and conversion operations, have resulted in excep-tional activity in three different fields of effort. The first is purely geographic. Prospectors are now pene-trating the few hitherto inaccessible regions in the hope of stumbling upon exposed ore deposits or locating visible indications of their presence. The second is chemical. Industrial chemists and metallurgists are seeking to facilitate the exploitation of lower grade ores to find methods of recovering valuable metals from common substances. In the third field of effort. lie the activities of the economic geologist and the mining engineer, who en-deavor to locate concealed ore deposits, which would remain hidden from the prospector, no matter. how expert or conscientious he might be. Obviously the task which such a man must face is both exacting and indefinite, and the tools which he has heretofore been permitted to bring to it are, for the most part, abstract-a knowledge of certain fundamental princi-ples and processes involved in the origin, occurrence, structure, and distribution of deposits. of natural re-sources and of the rocks which form the environments of those deposits, and a process-of reasoning by analogy supplemented by the .use of the diamond drill, or such artificial exposure as the test pit, trench, shaft or tunnel. His primary efforts are usually bent on acquiring a knowledge of the distribution of the rocks-as accurate -is possible-which is a natural prerequisite to any conclusion as to how they became so distributed. Over very extensive areas, however, he meets. the extreme difficulty of being unable to see the rocks, except at rare intervals, since .they have been concealed by an overburden of glacial material, of alluvium, of soil, or of other rocks.

The central and southern Appalachian Mountains were the major sources of domestically produced gold throughout the first half of the 19th century and continue to yield gold today. Small amounts of gold were probably extracted by the Indians and the Spaniards but the first documented report of gold in the region was made by Thomas Jefferson who found, in the Rappahannock River of Virginia in 1782, a 1.8 kg (4 lb) lump of gold ore that yielded 26 g (0.85 oz). Gold was subsequently discovered in North Carolina between 1793 and 1799, in Virginia in 1806, in South Carolina in 1827, in Georgia in 1829, and in Alabama about 1830 (Becker, 1894-5; Pardee and Park, 1948). Production climbed to more than 933 kg/a (30,000 oz per year) between 1830 and 1852, but dropped sharply after the California gold rush in 1849 as experienced miners moved west in search of bigger and easier stakes. The Civil War briefly halted gold mining in the Appalachians, but production rose to an average of about 249 kg/a (8,000 oz per year) from 1865 until 1878 and to about 404 kg/a (13,000 oz per year) from 1881 until 1915 when it again fell to near nil (Pardee and Park, 1948). Minor resurgences occurred in the 1930s and 1940s. Although there has been no reported production in recent years, it is likely that "weekend panners" still remove hundreds of ounces from streams annually. The total reported production for the area through 1959 is more than 77 t (2.5 million oz). This paper reports some initial findings of a long-term project designed to investigate the mineralogy, chemistry, mode of occurrence, and petrology of gold occurrences in the Appalachians. The goal of the initial phase was to determine the compositional range of gold in the Appalachians as a step toward deciding if sufficient variations were present to allow the definition of "compositional signatures." The very few published data on gold fineness in the Appalachians are based on assays that commonly include gold and silver from several mineral species. Analyses in the present study were performed on individual grains of electrum using a spot size of 10 µm x 10 µm to 100 µm X 100 µm (394 X 394 micro in. to 3,940 X 3,940 micro in.), and thus reveal the true composition of the principal precious metal-bearing phase.

CONSERVATION of mine timber is becoming in-creasingly important, and the consumer is en-couraged to use treated wood to permit longer life of mine timbers, and attempts are also made to substitute other material for wood. The great diffi-culty in substituting metal and concrete props for wood is the inability of these to give yielding resistance to roof pressure as wood supports do. In Europe, where mine timber costs are somewhat more important than in America, many designs of steel props have been tried, but have been unsuccessful, chiefly on account of inability to give yielding resistances. A metal pit prop that gives the desired effect has been extensively used in European mines and has caused a considerable reduction in accidents from falls of roof. Where mining operations have been sus-pended on account of strikes, conditions were found to be much better where such props were used instead of wood props, and machinery, which would have been destroyed by roof falls had wood props been used, was protected by the use of these yielding metal props. As this prop is adjustable, all the work of adjusting and transferring long props through narrow ways is done away with. It can also be drawn with greater ease and safety than wooden props; when properly used it is practically indestructible. European users have reported savings as against wooden props as high as 80 per cent. It gives audible warning of its working because the sliding action takes place in minute jerks. As the prop yields gradually to pressure its force is taken up by friction between the H sections, and this movement progressively increases the resistance of the prop to the increasing roof pressure. In the early development of the prop, it was designed with two steel members a and b of standard H steel sec-tions of equal dimensions provided with guide claws a' and b', held in frictional contact against each other by two differential wedges, f and g, and a floating link, e. In setting up the prop its two members are drawn out to the required length, the loose wedge, g, is then fitted into the space between the left-hand roller of the link d and the lower member of the prop b, and tapped suf-ficiently tight to prevent any relative movement of the two members from taking place prematurely. The prop is then raised to its intended position and secured in the usual way.

The control of dusts and fumes of submicron size is involved in many process industries. This paper presents in tabular form the quantitative data from a number of metallurgical operations and discusses allowable discharge in terms of effluent-weight ratio. Typical installations for recovery of stack effluents are cited. THERE are many sources of smoke, fumes, gases, and dusts that may cause undesirable contamination in an industrial area. Fumes and gases are the result of chemical action or volatilization, while dusts are produced in processes of disintegration and dispersion. Commonly, smokes are suspended particles formed by combustion or destructive distillation. Methods for controlling smoke are generally known, and great improvements have been made in equipment for removing fine dusts and fumes from gases. In most of the industrial centers of the country, the chief duty of the air-pollution abatement agency is the elimination or reduction of emissions resulting from improper combustion. Correct methods of firing, proper fuel selection, and installation of properly designed equipment may accomplish this. It is becoming more widely recognized that much of the contamination of an industrial atmosphere is caused by dusts, fumes, and gases that are not related to the process of combustion. As such emissions are usually a functional part of plant operation, they rarely can be prevented even by better design and careful operation. When dusts, fumes, and gases are an integral part of the operation, mechanical equipment must be designed to remove these emissions. Most of the dusts and fumes that should be controlled are less than 1 micron in size. Control of such small particles is largely a new and untried field in many industrial areas. However, where conditions have been critical, effective control equipment for dusts, fumes, and gases has been in operation for many years. The problem is not one of smoke abatement and requires an entirely different set of standards for effective solution. Identical standards need not be applied to all industrial areas because of differences in meteorology, physiography, plant location, plant density, and nature of stack effluents. In this paper, discussion of control of atmospheric contamination by industrial plants refers specifically to the Los Angeles area, but the method of approach is applicable to any area where similar problems are encountered. Quantities of particulate matter reported in analysis of stack effluents indicate the need for standards of emission. Many types of dusts and fumes that contribute materially to the air-pollution problem are discharged into the atmosphere at a lower rate than 0.40 grain per cu ft at standard conditions. When a major mineral find has been announced the general perception is that a battle between Aborigines and the mining company involved will inevitably occur.It is a fact that many miners in the past have not had a good relationship with Aborigines because of their indifferent attitudes towards them. They saw no common future and went their particular way. However, attitudes have changed significantly since Noonkanbah and both miners and Aborigines are seeking common ground in order to achieve mutual benefits from the establishment of a mine on or near Aboriginal land. There are many obstacles that both miners and Aborigines need to overcome inordertofindthiscommongroundtoachieveawin/win situation. The obstacles can be found in entrenched ideas and practices which need overhauling, not the least of which emanate from government policy and requirements.Without going into specifics, the Noonkanbah incident during the 1970's where Aborigines and their supporters confronted miners who were ordered by the Western Australian governmentto drill on Aboriginal land, polarized Aborigines and miners. Since this incident, many Aborigines, particularly those in the cities, have had the attitude that mining and Aboriginal culture are in direct conflict. Aboriginal opinion is generally shaped in the larger cities through mass media coverage of the opinions of urban Aborigines and their supporters. Through no fault of their own, these Aborigines were removedfromthe land of their ancestors and have notlived atraditional Aboriginal life-style for a number of generations and most have little knowledge of, nor have had involvement in, traditional Aboriginal lore and culture. For the most part these people live in awestern life-style and few still know their language. They generally have high profiles, often giving viewpoints that are wrongly considered "Aboriginal" and supposedly representing all Aborigines. This group is very different with their thought processes and values from those Aborigines who live on their own traditional lands with a traditional life-style, and practise their age old ceremonies. Their tribal values are based in their relationship with the land, expressed through complex religious ceremonial rites of song, dance and legend. Today this group is very much diminished in numbers but nevertheless in the region of the Gulf of Carpentaria there is a high proportion ofpeople who practise their lore, speak their own languages and pass on traditions to their children. It is well documented in the history of Australia that Aborigines have been decimated in numbers and whole tribes have been wiped out. Certainly in this region the experience has been no different.

Discussion of the paper by CHARLES A. MITKE, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 105, September, 1915, pp. 1941 to 1958. GERALD SHERMAN, Bisbee, Ariz.-Mr. Mitke justly might have made much stronger his claim for increase in efficiency of labor due to the introduction of forced ventilation. The product per man shift in stoping in the Gardner division has practically doubled. While it is true that improved methods have been responsible for a great part of this gain, and what is due to better ventilation cannot be definitely known, yet it is also true that the results could not have been obtained in that division as it was in 1912. . The paper discusses the two systems of ventilation in use, exhaust and pressure. In both the object is the same, to take foul air or gas out of the mine by the most direct course and replace it by fresh. In coal mines, the exhaust system is in almost universal use, and since the most advanced work in ventilation has been in that class of mines, it was naturally the first one to be considered. It has the advantage of leaving all adits, shafts, or other openings free for use. Doors are only needed to direct the course of the air, and not to confine it. Its disadvantages appear in case of fire, or if the ground over the mine is much broken by subsidence. The fan must work in gas in the case of a -fire, and may be. damaged or destroyed either by heat or by corrosive gas. At the time of the fire in the Lowell division of the Copper Queen, a small exhaust fan was placed over a ventilating raise, but the vanes and housing were destroyed by sulphurous gases within a few weeks. If the ground above the mined area is much broken, as is frequently the case when the ore deposit is thick vertically, a good deal of air is likely to pass through it, particularly if it is near the surface. Leakage from this source is a loss to the exhaust system by short circuiting, which is exaggerated by a contraction or block in the air course. It serves as an added outlet in the pressure system. This is strikingly shown at the United Verde, where many jets of steam may be seen coming up through the ground above the stoped country on a cold day.

IN a paper1 before this Institute in 1940, the writer reported that the surface orientation texture of zinc and cadmium differed from the texture existing within the casting, in that basal planes were parallel to the surface. He was unable to rationalize the origin of this surface texture. It is conceivable that the surface orientation texture is influenced by the atomic force fields, which are different at the surface and within the body of metal. It was considered that a radical change in the surface against which the metal is cast might alter the surface texture. In trial of this, zinc has been cast against a surface of molten lead, but the same result has been obtained-i.e., (001) parallel, ±20°, to the surface-as was obtained when it was cast against air, Transite or iron.1 Into the bottom of an open cast-iron tray, 7 by 14 in. by 2 in. deep, preheated to about 275°C., about ¼ in. of lead, then) ½ in. of zinc was poured, and the whole was covered with an electric heater to enforce freezing from the bottom upward. After a lapse of time sufficient for the zinc but not the lead to solidify, the zinc slab was raised free of the molten lead. The bottom surface of the zinc casting was coated with a thin layer of lead. A specimen of the slab 1 ½ in. square was metallographically polished to flatten it and remove the slight film of lead, and the orientation was determined by the method used before,1 with the result stated above. Some determinations have also been made on other metals, as follows: Surface orientation determinations were made on the 3/8-in. diameter grip section of two ¼ -in, diameter aluminum-alloy die-cast tensile bars and on a 1/8 by ½ -in. flat aluminum-alloy die-cast tensile bar. None of these three aluminum die castings exhibited any preferred orientation at-the surface. A brass die casting (nominal composition: 60 Cu, 37.75 Zn, 1.00 Sn, 1.00 Pb, 0.10 Al, 0.15 Si) furnished by C. S. Smith was also examined. The surface showed a random orientation of alpha and beta. SUMMARY A zinc casting solidified against a molten lead surface was found to have the same surface orientation texture, (001) parallel to the surface, as other zinc and cadmium castings. Aluminum and alpha-beta brass die castings were found to have random grain orientation textures at the surface. ACKNOWLEDGMENT The X-ray determinations were conduced by M. L. Fuller.

As a part of a symposium on the relations of structure to ore deposition, in February 1938, the writer presented some tentative opinions derived from his experience with a number of important lead-zinc replacement deposits. These ideas were set forth, as a basis for discussion and a stimulus to further inquiry, in a mimeographed leaflet that read as follows Intimate acquaintance with a number of lead and zinc deposits in metamorphosed limestones seems to indicate the existence of certain common features from which can be established some general principles governing the localization of ore in this type of formation. It is suspected that these principles can be applied, with modifications, to mineralization in unmetamorphosed limestone. In metamorphosed formations, some observed rules are as follows: 1. Bands or masses of pure limestone are very resistant to replacement by ore solutions, and are likely either to contain no ore or to resist replacement until near the end of mineralization. The reason for this apparently is physical, not chemical, since microscopic data indicate that when ore is deposited by far the greater part of it substitutes for carbonate. The chief factor is believed to be a lack of porosity in massive limestone that has undergone flowage and recrystallization. 2. Masses of intensely siliceous or silicated rock are likewise unfavorable ore receptacles. This seems to be accounted for by two factors: (a) chemical unsuitability or resistance to replacement, and (b) physical resistance to small-scale brecciation, which might facilitate the opening of effective channelways for solutions. Some low-grade ore may occur, however, and also sporadic fracture fillings. 3. The optimum condition for ore reception appears to be found in bands or areas containing carbonate and silicates (or quartz) intimately mingled in something like equal proportions. In this situation movement is likely to result in mixed flowage and fracture, producing a fine-textured porosity that admits solutions freely and provides access to an abundance of replaceable carbonate. Cleavage cracks in some minerals such as diopside are believed to facilitate the penetration of solutions. 4. Certain minerals or assemblages are regarded as favorable impurities in a limestone and others as unfavorable. Original quartz, and subsequently developed diopside, and perhaps garnet, are typical favorable pre-ore gangue; in general rather equidimensional, brittle minerals. Tremolite, biotite, and probably wollastonite, are typical unfavorable pre-ore gangue; in general highly elongated and somewhat flexible minerals likely to develop under strong shearing stresses. 5. Tentative opinion is that the ratio of lime and magnesia in a limestone is of little or no importance.

Recent well-publicised problems with the start-up of new mining projects have continued to feed the perception that the mining business in general and Ore Reserves in particular are a poor risk. New mines commonly experience difficulties when the true variability of ore characteristics becomes apparent during commissioning. At this critical stage, the impact of lower metal recovery, reduced throughput or increased consumption of reagents and energy can have a catastrophic effect on economic returns, as illustrated by the premature closure of some operations. There appear to be several common reasons contributing to the poor performance of mining projects, of which three are examined here: lack of early risk assessment before feasibility studies are started, inadequate sampling for metallurgical test work and variability of the run-of-mine (ROM) ore. An underlying feature of these issues is the lack of effective interaction between geologists, mining engineers and metallurgists/ process engineers. Geologists need to be more aware of ore processing issues and the range of characteristics that need to be considered as part of the resource estimate. Metallurgists need a greater understanding of the variability of the run of mine ore in terms of all the characteristics that influence the design and operation of the plant. Mining engineers need to determine the short-term variability of the ore in the mine schedule, so that there is confidence that the quality of the run-of-mine ore will be within the design specifications of the plant. A substantial overlap between these disciplines and sharing of areas of responsibility is necessary if these and other technical problems are to be better understood, production estimates are to be improved and commercial risks are to be reduced. Although the JORC Code (1999) provides guidelines for reporting all the issues that are material to an Ore Reserve estimate, some issues are rarely fully addressed in Ore Reserve reports. In particular there is no formal requirement for a metallurgist to assure his or herself of the appropriateness of the Ore Reserve classification. Consequently the level of uncertainty related to recovered grade and ore processing characteristics may be understated. It is suggested that to meet the concerns of bodies funding new mineral developments a stronger multi-disciplinary approach to the analysis of mineral deposits and reporting of Ore Reserves is required. The culmination of this approach would be the formal requirement for a geologist, mining engineer and a metallurgist to co-sign Ore Reserve reports.

I REGRET that I am unable to present this subject in definite form and detail. All I shall attempt at this meeting is to lay before you some curious facts, the bearings and explanations of which must be reserved for future consideration. I hope before the next meeting to have carried experiments far enough to furnish a more important contribution to the science of iron metallurgy. The Wickersham process consists in the introduction into the molten metal, as it runs from the furnace, of air from the hot blast. Mr. Samuel Wickersham is the originator of the plan, as applied in practice, although Mr. Martien had the idea a long time ago, and, I believe, went to England about it. But at that time Mr. Bessemer was coming before the public with his invention, which engrossed the attention of iron-masters, and Mr. Martien accomplished nothing. The principal difficulty in our experiments at Dunbar was to get a practicable runner or trough, through which the molten metal should pass, and in which it should be exposed to the action of the Mast. The runner we used was ten feet long, and perforated on the sides to permit the entrance of the air-currents. When we used a cast-iron and fire-clay runner, the heat was so great that before we were more than half done with a run, the lower part of the runner was melted, and we had a magnificent Fourth of July display of fireworks until the blast was shut off. We had to abandon fire clay. The runner with which we have had the best success is made of wrong- ht-iron tubes, 29 inches in diameter, attached to a wrought-iron frame, and lined with a mixture of crushed conglornerate (quartz) and a little fire clay to give it cohesion. The wrought-iron shell curves inward over the upper edges, so as to catch and throw back into the current the flying sparks and particles of metal thrown out by ebullition. With this we have been able to run 12 to 14 tons at a heat with great ease. Mr. Wickersham has since prepared this material (pounded quartz) into a shaped brick or tile, with the necessary perforations for the passage of the air, which promises to answer every requirement for steady working. IN September 1939, the Ohio Copper Co. inaugurated the treatment of its copper-bearing mill tailings at Lark, Utah. These tailings had been accumulated during the regular operation of the Ohio Copper mine and mill over the period 1907 to 1919. Gravity concentration had been employed except for a comparatively short period in 1919, when flotation was used. The ore milled during that period assayed about 1 per cent Cu. The chief copper mineral, chalcocite, was disseminated in a shattered quartzite, mainly along fracture or cleavage planes. The quartzite gangue was extremely hard and grinding to liberation resulted in excessive sliming of the "sooty" chalcocite, with consequent high tailings losses. Recovery on the seven million tons treated was probably less than 6o per cent of the total copper content. As early as 1918, attempts had been made to sample the dump. In 1928, a complete sampling program was undertaken. The sampling consisted of seventy-four 5-in. post auger holes drilled to the full depth of the dump at regular intervals of 250 ft. Each 10-ft. portion thereof comprised a sample for analysis. Each sample was screened, rolled, divided into three parts, dried and assayed. The reject was retained for testing purposes. From the depth of the auger holes a contour map of the dump was plotted, Fig.1, which gives percentages of tonnage and copper content. The tonnage within the limit of the drill holes was estimated at about five million tons with an average content of 0.42 per cent Cu, 31 per cent of which (0.13 per cent) was acid-soluble. A screen analysis of the composite dump sample is shown in Table I. Flotation tests by several companies and individuals were then made, the results of [ ] which ranged from 62 to 74 per cent recovery. On the basis of these, a Zoo-ton pilot plant employing straight flotation was built and operated for a few months. Operation of this plant was unsuccessful, as no provision had been made to handle the copper-bearing solutions resulting from the water-soluble copper, a point that was overlooked in the laboratory test work. Attempts to decant the copper-bearing solution for precipitation in the usual manner ahead of flotation were not satisfactory because of low water recovery (owing to poor settling characteristics of the pulp) and contamination of the copper precipitate with unsettled slime. "In the interest of accident prevention it is felt that a report of the measures taken during the past four years toward the reduction of fatal accidents in Alabama, especially in preventing falls of roof and coal, will be of interest throughout the mining districts.In order to determine the primary factors in the reduction of fatal accidents from falls of roof and coal, the operators, State Inspection Department, and the Alabama council of the Holmes Safety Association were asked: ""What has your organization done to help in the reduction of accidents from fails of roof and coal?"" The responses to this question have made this report possible.To bring out briefly the reduction in fatal accidents from falls of roof and coal as well as from all causes, the following three tables have been prepared.These statistics have been compiled from the records of the State Inspection Department.In the order mentioned, it is felt that credit for the reduction in fatal accidents from falls of roof and coal should be given to the individual operating companies, the State Inspection Department, the Alabama council and chapters of the Holmes Safety Association, and the Alabama Mining Institute. The individual operating companies naturally head the list in that they are directly concerned from a humanitarian as well as a financial point of view. The State Inspection Department through frequent and thorough inspections and by providing necessary statistics is largely responsible for the reduction. The Alabama council and its affiliated chapters of the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association through its publicity and education reaches a large number of employees throughout the mining district. The Alabama Mining Institute defrays the council expenses and thus makes possible much of this service to the Alabama mining industry.In 1925 there were 49 fatalities, equivalent to 115,169 man days per fatality, from falls of roof and coal, which was by no means a good record; in 1926 the number and frequency of accidents were reduced to 42 fatalities and 149,096 man days per fatality. When in 1927 the fatalities from this cause mounted to 61 and the man days per fatality were reduced to 89,903, it was quickly realized that more concentrated efforts must be exerted to reduce such accidents.As early as August, 1927, at which time the fatalities from falls had reached a total of 31, the following letter from the Chief Mine Inspector was written to each operating company in the State and was the initiation of a very strenuous campaign by all parties concerned towards the reduction of accidents from falls of roof and coal."
