We should like to point out that a similar idea was put forward by Friedel8 in his book on the subject of lattice merohedrism "merihedrie réticulaire:"—When two crystals A and B are twinned with respect to a mirror plane, there exists a common superlattice, "réseau periode," which is independent of the contact surface between the two crystals. The volume V of this superlattice is a simple multiple of the volume v of the lattice of crystals A, or B, (Fig. 5). This "multiple cell" is defined by the twin plane (p q r) and a row of atoms [h k l] normal to this plane, the base being taken as the smallest unit (two-dimensional) of this plane. Two cases must be considered. First when the multiple cell, as defined, has no atom site at its center nor at the center of its faces other than (p q r), v the twinning index is defined by —. In the second v case, when one of the two above conditions does not v apply, then the twinning index is V 2v A more intuitive definition of the twinning index would be the proportion of atoms of C, which would coincide with those of C1 when the C, lattice is imagined to extend on the other side of the contact surface. PETROLEUM engineers are displaying considerable interest in those fundamental properties of matter and energy that control the phenomena of oil and gas production. The subject is a difficult one to investigate by laboratory experiments for two reasons: (1) it is impossible to reproduce in the laboratory the scale of forces and dimensions that exist in the underground reservoir; (2) if we attempt to scale down the dimensions we are unable to reduce all proportionally. It is as if we tried to construct a model blast furnace for the reduction of iron ore, and reduced all lineal dimensions. We should find that the interstices between the miniature chunks of ore would not .permit rapid transfer of gases, that combustion and heat transfer would not take place as in the full size furnace and that, in short, the contraption would not work. Just so, when we attempt to make a reduced scale oil field we find we must have, not only miniature reservoir and miniature wells, but "miniature" sand, oil, gas, etc. Much valuable work, however, has been done along these experimental lines and more will no doubt follow, but investigators should bear this point in mind and strive to attain dimensional homogeneity and dynamical similarity in order that their conclusions may be translated into terms applying to the oil reservoir. As Gibson says,1 "These conditions are attained when all terms of the physical equation have the same dimensions, . . . when all corresponding particles of the two systems trace out similar paths and when the velocities are such as to make all corresponding forces acting on two such particles in the same ratio. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the mechanics of fluid movement as it pertains to the oil pool and to point out the complexity of the laws of fluid delivery under the conditions often found.

With the progress of modern mining engineering, one of the features of which is the mining from greater depths and the hoisting of greatly increased loads, it becomes a matter of increasing importance that the engineer should be able to determinewith some degree of precision the character of the strains on the hauling rope. But a wire rope is a complex structure; it is made up of spirally-twisted strands, which in turn are composed of spirally-twisted wires, and it is not particularly easy to say exactly what happens when this "doubly-twisted structure is wound round a drum or over a pulley.. The difficulty has been generally evaded in ordinary practice by the simple device of adopting a large factor of safety for the rope-usually from 8 to 10-a factor which experience has shown is sufficiently large to cover the bending strains set "up when the rope is passed over pulleys of the sizes commonly considered appropriate.When, however, we add the stress due to the bending of the rope to the stress produced by" the direct pull, we find that the actual factor of safety is usually more nearly 4 than 10, and frequently the bending stresses in the rope are so large compared with the simple tensile stresses that their neglect may easily lead to disastrous results when dealing with problems a little out of the common run. Common Empirical Rules.-It is always "recognized that the bending of a wire rope round too small a pulley is likely to do the rope serious injury, but as it is desirable in ordinary winding operations to reduce the inertia of the moving parts to a minimum...

Introduction Project scheduling . . . . • What is it? • Why is it done? • Who does it? • How is it done? • When is it done? These are some of the questions that will be addressed in this paper. It is intended that by exploring these questions, an understanding of project scheduling, its purpose and benefits can be achieved. The purpose of this article is not to describe in detail "how to schedule", but rather to give an overview of the scheduling function on a project. A successful scheduling effort is dependent upon the people responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring the schedule, and the tools and procedures that are used. These three elements are integral components of project scheduling. What is it? A schedule is the integration of network relationships, resource constraints and the calendar. The schedule identifies when the activities "will" be done, while the network states when they "must" be done. Networking techniques are the most widely accepted scheduling tool for complex projects. The benefit of the network is the simplicity in illustrating, presenting and analyzing the dependency relationships of a project. The logic network is the foundation of the schedule. When calendar dates are applied to the logic network, it becomes a schedule which provides the basis for evaluation of project status, forecasting the occurrence of events and controlling the project. The sequence of activities that requires the longest time to complete determines the overall duration of the schedule. This longest sequence of activities is called the "critical path". The "critical path method" (CPM) is used to describe this particular schedule network methodology. The two common conventions of CPM networks are the "arrow diagram met hod" (ADM) and the "precedence diagram method" (PIM). There are arguments in favor of each of these two methods, and usually the one that is used is a matter of personal preference, project directive or corporate procedure.

LIQUIDUS temperatures of molten alloys were measured in an oscillating-cup viscosimeter by observing the abrupt increase in the alloy viscosity when the apparatus was cooled below the alloy liquidus temperature. The liquidus transformation can be an elusive thermal effect in an alloy system where a small amount of material is involved in a low-enthalpy liquidus reaction, or where other unfavorable physical conditions interfere. Using the viscosity technique, liquidus temperatures were measured in binary alloys of plutonium with cerium, gallium, and iron, as well as ternary Pu-Ce-Co alloys. The previously described oscillating-cup viscosimeter1 is a torsion pendulum consisting of a right circular, cylindrical tantalum cup fitted to a rigid shaft which, in turn, is suspended by a torsion fiber in a highvacuum system. When the torsion pendulum is placed in oscillation the viscosity of the liquid contained in the cup is a function of both the decay of the oscillation caused by the viscous drag of the liquid contained in the sealed tantalum cup, and the period of the oscillation. The period is measured by a photo-electrically operated timer to the nearest thousandth of a second. Prior to each measurement, the apparatus is held at temperature between 5 and 18 hr to assure thermal equilibrium throughout the 8 to 10-cc alloy sample. When the cup, filled with a liquid metal, is oscillating. only a very thin outer layer of the fluid is in motion. This moving annulus represents the liquid's contribution to the moment of inertia of the torsion pendulum. When the viscosity increases, more liquid is placed in motion, and the slight increase in the moment of inertia causes a corresponding increase in the period of oscillation.

The mining industry, both here and internationally, is continually developing increasingly sophisticated software to compute mineral resource estimates, but these processes cannot compensate for a flawed geological interpretation of the geology of the economic commodity(s) concentrations. Quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) is becoming increasingly common in association with the sampling and assaying practices within the industry. However, it is rare in the case of a geological interpretation associated with mineral resource estimation. Why? In the context of this paper, QA/QC relates to the use of statistical and graphical tools to show that the geological economic commodity concentrations have been appropriately domained. Domaining is essential to improve the chance of getting a mineral resource estimate right. Commodity value and acceptable concentration variation within a mineral resource can be ingredients that make mineral resource estimation difficult to get right. But it is possible to get it right a very high proportion of the time. It is more likely to occur when inappropriate data consolidation is minimised. In any case, inappropriate data consolidation is significantly reduced when the geological interpretation is strongly consistent with the data and it is demonstrable. To achieve quality global estimates of geological domain concentrations, it is essential that the geology of the prospect is understood sufficiently that the deposit is appropriately domained. Appropriate domaining occurs when sample populations are separated in such a way that only data in harmony with each other within the population contributes to the domain's concentration estimate. The paper will use four brief case studies to illustrate how QA/QC can be used to display data and validate the underpinning geological interpretation through its associated domaining to get it right when it comes to a mineral resource estimation.

"The mining of the ore bodies at Rabbit Lake has in the past been by the open pit method. This method is presently being used to develop the B-zone and will continue into the future with the development of two smaller ore bodies, the A-zone and D-zone. The Eagle Point orebody will be developed by an underground method which will provide production and employment into the next century.The ore bodies at B-zone, A-zone and D-zone are unique in that they are located under Wollaston Lake. To permit mining by the open pit method a steel-celled dyke has been constructed around the north end of the B-zone. This same dyking method will be used for the A -zone and D-zone. INTRODUCTIONMine development at Rabbit Lake commenced in 1970when a detailed engineering feasibility study established the viability of the Rabbit Lake deposit. In 1972 construction of the mill and camp site began. Construction materials were seasonally hauled to the site over a winter road until November 1973when the government of Saskatchewan completed an all-weather road to within six miles of the operation.In October 1974, stripping of the Rabbit Lake open pit began with the removal of overburden and lake bottom sediments from the previously drained Rabbit Lake. The first ore was processed by the mill in June 1975and by October the mill was producing three million pounds per year. The design capacity of five million pounds annually was first achieved in 1977 and maintained until 1981, when lower ore grades resulted in lower production rates .It was clear when mining at Rabbit Lake began that, without additional reserves, the Rabbit Lake operation had a life of less than 10 years. Exploration, therefore, continued in the immediate area in an attempt to discover additional uranium mineralization."

It is with some diffidence that I venture to address the Montreal Section of the Society of Chemical industry on the subject of motor fuel from coal at a time when crude petroleum is produced in greater quantities than at any time in history, and at a time when the known reserves exceed all expectations, even the optimistic estimates of the Committee of Eleven of the American Petroleum Institute. Not only are new fields being discovered in America a -an embarrassing frequency but sources outside of the North American Continent show, unmistakable signs of adding materially to the world's sources of oil. Were it not for the tremendous scientific and technical importance of the work done in the past few years in transforming coal into liquid motor fuels, I should prefer to let this subject rest until a more propitious time, such as prevailed some years ago, when the gasoline consumption curve was rising rapidly and the production curve was slowing in its upward rise. That was the period which stimulated the researches which resulted in tetra ethyl lead and anti-knock gasolines on this side of the Atlantic and in methanol, synthetic gasoline and hydrogenation of coal on the other side. Some of you will recall a symposium on Motor Fuels and Oil Conservation held at the Chemists' Club n New York in September; 1925. Dr. R. L. Brown and I presented a paper at this meeting on "Complete Utilization of Coal and Motor, Fuel, in which we pointed out that coal was the most likely raw material source of gasoline substitutes if and when needed. Miners depend most heavily on visual cues to recognize underground mining hazards; consequently, illumination plays a critical role in miners? safety. Some hazards are located in the miners? peripheral field-of-view (10 degrees to about 60 degrees off-axis) or on-axis (0 degrees). The objective of this research was to determine if there were visual performance improvements when using solid-state cap lamps with light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as compared to incandescent light bulbs commonly used in miner cap lamps. Recent research has indicated that an increased short-wavelength content of the spectral power distribution of LEDs relative to incandescent lamps improves peripheral visual performance for low-light (mesopic) conditions. The visual performances of nine subjects were quantified by measuring the subjects? speed and accuracy in detecting floor objects located on axis and at ±20 degrees off axis. The objects were located near field (1.83 meters) and far field (3.66 meters). Upon presentation of the objects, subjects would count and point to each object using a red-laser pointer. The object detection response time and number of missed objects were recorded. The results of the visual performance comparison for an LED, a prototype LED, and an incandescent cap lamp are presented. There we no missed objects when subjects used the LED-based cap lamps but, there were three missed object occurrences when subjects used the incandescent cap lamp. The mean detection time when using the incandescent cap lamp was 55.3% greater than the prototype LED cap lamp and 43.5% greater than the LED cap lamp. It can be inferred from this data that the spectral distribution of LED-based cap lamps could enable significant visual performance improvements as compared to incandescent cap lamps1.

A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of stainless steel production, including that of the nickel, ferronickel, ferrochromium and iron feedstocks was carried out using inventory data derived from the literature. The environmental impact categories considered in the study were Global Warming Potential (GWP), Acidification Potential (AP) and total (or full cycle) energy consumption. The effects of different sources of electricity (black coal, natural gas and hydroelectricity) were also examined in the study. The results of the LCA showed that when ferronickel is used as the nickel source, the total energy consumption for stainless steel production is approximately 50% higher than when nickel metal is used as the nickel source (75 MJ/kg cf. 49 MJ/kg). This result comes about largely because the Fe units in ferronickel have a much higher energy intensity than do the Fe units in pig iron, and the greater the use of the former at the expense of the latter, the greater is the total energy consumption. The results also showed that the production of ferronickel made by far the largest contribution (59%) to the total energy consumption for stainless steel production when this feedstock is used as the nickel source, but when nickel metal is used as the nickel source the contributions of the various stages are more evenly distributed. It was also observed that the electricity consumption of the electric furnaces used in the production of ferronickel, ferrochromium and stainless steel contributed approximately 50% to the total energy consumed in stainless steel production. Given the relatively low efficiencies associated with electrical power generation, significant reductions in the total energy of stainless steel production could be anticipated if more direct use of thermal energy was made in the ferronickel, ferrochromium and/or stainless steel smelting stages, for example by utilising bath smelting processes.

"In recent years, the demand for measures to control liquefaction of existing airport runways and harbor structures has increased. However, from the perspectives of constructability and cost, application of grid-form deep mixing walls to these types of structures requires the formation of wider grid spacing as compared with conventional designs. In this research, we focused on the extent of liquefaction and ground surface settling when grid spacing is made wider than conventional designs. We conducted centrifuge model tests, and confirmed the liquefaction suppression effect when grid-form modifications involving wide grid spacing are adopted under asphalt pavement. The tests were conducted under conditions that included changing the grid spacing and groundwater level. When the groundwater level was high, an increase in water pressure was observed, even within the grid. However, when the groundwater level was low, the increase in water pressure inside the grid was suppressed. We also found that if the generation of water pressure can be suppressed, the amount of settling due to liquefaction can also be controlled.INTRODUCTIONOne construction technique used as a countermeasure to liquefaction is grid-form deep mixing walls. Grid-form deep mixing walls are a construction technique for which improved grid-shaped wall bodies are built into the ground below the surface using a deep mixing method. This construction technique minimizes shear deformation by surrounding liquefied ground with improved wall bodies, thereby preventing liquefaction (Fig.1). With conventional designs, grid-form deep mixing walls determine the grid spacing that can deter liquefaction based on a ratio of the grid spacing L to the improved depth H (ratio = L/H). Ordinarily, designs are implemented with an L/H ratio of 0.8 or less (PWRI, 1999).In recent years, a demand for measures to control liquefaction of existing airport pavement and harbor structures has increased. However, when liquefaction countermeasures are implemented at these types of facilities and structures, the construction work must be implemented while the facilities and structures remain in service. Therefore, temporal and spatial constraints must be considered. In addition, unlike conventional liquefaction countermeasures, performance requirements are such that, even if some degree of liquefaction is allowed, the performance is acceptable as long as the amount of settlement is within a predetermined value. Therefore, if grid-form deep mixing walls are applied to these structures, grid spacing that is wider than conventional standards is desired."

(Referring to map) If there are any methods to improve on this I would like to have some suggestions on it. The maps there are on a scale of one inch to two hundred feet. At the time of each extension a letter is used and a line drawn across the entry and the room. The date of the extension is given up in the margin of the map. Here is an extension made April 6th. Extension L is shown in each one of the rooms, November 29th. N-you see the two rooms have been finished down into here. 0-the last extension, has just been stopped, and the three working rooms. Now, one of the features of this plan, when the rooms have been stopped, the line is drawn straight across. When the room or entry is still going, there is a small projection beyond the line, indicating that the next cut is changed. When the distance cannot be ascertained by the engineer, he gets the distance from the mine boss or some other source which is reliable, and that is put on in a dotted line. That gives you a complete story. Anyone looking over the map can see immediately every place that was working at the time of this extension, every place that is inaccessible, and get a complete picture. The extension of the coal is put on the extension at each extension. The survey stations are put in, showing each survey point. The pillars when they are pulled-only the pillars that are pulled are cross-hatched. The whole map is in cross-hatch without any regard as to what pillars are pulled. If a little stump is left in, that is shown on the map. The engineer only shows what pillars are pulled that he has actual knowledge of, or has been given to him in detail by the mine foreman. I believe that concludes the work on the mine map, and there is certainly room for a lot of improvement on most of the mine maps which we have been getting into the office. PRESIDENT PRYDE: Does anyone want to ask any questions? Any questions about the leasing regulations? I want to say there are several leases in the Rock Springs field, and when Mr. Smith comes on one of his visits the Rock Springs Institute have asked him to address them on the leasing proposition.

During the gold cyanidation process, cyanide can be lost from the leachate by various chemical routes. The products of these cyanide losses include base metal cyanide complexes, thio­cyanate and cyanate. These losses are particularly important when treating pyritic or cupriferous ores since the two most sig­nificant cyanic ides, in order of importance, are sulfides and cop­per bearing minerals (I). Cyanidation of pyritic minerals results in the formation of thiocyanate. The problems caused by cyanide soluble copper minerals are well known to the gold processing industry and have been reviewed by several authors (e.g. 2, 3). An important consider­ation, especially with a number of more recent leaching tech­nologies, is the effect of the CN :Cu mole ratio, R, on the gold leaching kinetics. In order to efficiently leach cupriferous ores, it is important that R is maintained at a level that allows suffi­ciently rapid leaching without excessive use of cyanide. The optimum value for R in a fixed leaching system would appear to lie between 3 and 4. This is based on the early observations that the leaching rate is very slow when R is below 3, with a rapid increase in the leaching rate above 3 (2, 3,4). The leaching rate increases gradually when R is greater than 4 (4). The major Cu(I)-cyanide complex in this range of R values is the [Cu(CN)J]2· species. It has been postulated that leaching occurs due to either uncomplexed cyanide or the fourth ligand in [Cu(CN)4]3·, since the stepwise formation constant for this complex is very small (2, 3). An additional consideration when leaching cupriferous ores is the oxidation of cyanide by Cu(II) minerals, resulting in the formation of cyanate. It has also been reported that both sulfide minerals (5) and activated carbon (6, 7) catalyse the oxidation of cyanide to cyanate. From the above discussion, it is important for the leaching con­ditions to be carefully controlled when treating pyritic and cuprifer­ous ores in order to achieve efficient and economically viable leach­ing. For example, large concentrations of thiocyanate in the leachate would reveal large cyanide losses and thus indicate the need for a pretreatment step to oxidize the sulfides. Alternatively, a low R value would indicate slow leaching kinetics and consequent low gold recoveries, indicating the need for increased cyanide dosage.

The withdrawal of gas and/or oil in appreciable quantity from a natural oil reservoir causes the pressure within the reservoir to diminish, and if the oil is completely saturated with gas, this dissolved gas begins to evolve from solution. The liberation of gas from solution in oil causes the oil to change in several ways, the principal changes being: (1) reduction in volume or "shrinkage"; (2) increase in specific gravity (decrease in degrees A.P.I.); (3) decrease of energy in the oil; (4) increased viscosity; (5) increased surface tension. As the writer's investigations have been concerned more with the first three items than with changes in viscosity and surface tension the following discussion relates particularly to the volumetric shrinkage of the oil, to the increased specific gravity, and to the decreased energy in the oil, each caused by the liberalion of dissolved gas. One of the most surprising facts that have developed in the study of high-pressure well-head and "bottom-hole" samples is the great reduction in volume that occurs in some oils when the naturally dissolved gas is liberated. High-pressure samples taken from well heads in the Oklahoma City, Kettleman Hills and Ventura, Calif., fields decreased in volume from 11.2 to 40.5 per cent when the dissolved gas was liberated in reducing the pressure on the sample to atmospheric. The amount of shrinkage an oil undergoes when gas is liberated depends upon the quantity of gas liberated and also upon its composition. A given volume of the heavier gases, propane and butane for example, will occupy more space in the oil than an equal volume of methane. The reason for this probably is that the molecules of the heavier gases are larger than those of the lighter gases. When gases are not in solution, and particularly when they are at low pressures, the distance between the gas molecules is so much greater than the dimensions of the molecules themselves that the mere size of the molecules has little effect upon the space occupied by the gas, Avogadro's hypothesis, which in effect states that all gases under the same conditions have the same number of molecules per unit volume, relates to this phenomenon. THERE have always been in this world men of such keen intelligence that with their discourse they have been capable of infinite and various inventions that are as beneficial as they are simultaneously harmful to the human body. Wherefore, from day to day, we see unfolded before our eyes some of these that greatly astound our minds, and we remain so stupefied that when-we think of them we are not able to control our faculties for some time, both from considering by what necessity or purpose these men were goaded, as well as from contemplating the profound subtlety of their discoveries, which, in truth, are such that they are awarded the greatest commendation by noble minds. By following their counsels and with their aid, there have been* some astute and lever captains who have had certain pots or balls of earthenware carried by their infantry, expressly filled with compositions of powder or other unctuous liquors disposed to ignite easily. When they meet the enemy in battle and come up close to them, they try to strike vigorously with these in the first assault in an effort to throw them into disorder and to make them give way by breaking them up and drawing them out of formation. The smoke is harmful, but the fire very much more so. These are made in this way. Take the number of vessels that you have to make-it does not matter whether they are raw or baked as long as they are well freed from the moisture of the clay-and fill them a little more than half full with coarse gunpowder which has mixed in it pounded Grecian pitch and at least a third of crushed sulphur. Then pour in a covering a dito thick of strained pig fat mixed with powder. This keeps it from falling out when it is thrown and keeps the fire slower until it reaches the enemy. When this has been made, open up the pig fat a little at one side when you wish to throw it and put in a little fuse or a little good powder and apply fire, holding it in your hand until you see that the fire has taken hold well. The use of filling in mines is less common in the United States than it is in Europe, where in some places it is required by law. In most cases the filling is placed by hand, and the material used for this purpose is the waste from development and that sorted from the ore in the stopes. When these sources provide an insufficient supply, additional rock must be quarried on surface or mined underground, or some other material must be used. In different parts of the world sand, clay, gravel, culm, granulated slag, mill tailings, and even ashes, have been used as filling material in place of or in conjunction with rock. Of all the materials used for filling the best is probably clean sand. Gravel, finely crushed rock, granulated slag and coarse mill tailings are almost as good, and the methods used for placing and confining sand will apply equally well to any of these. The advantages of sand are its comparatively slight compressibility and the ease, economy and convenience with which it may be placed. On account of the voids, which necessarily occur in fills made of coarse waste, such fills will compress 10 to 25 per cent before they develop their full strength, whereas clean sand seldom compresses more than 5 per cent. Sand is especially desirable when practically complete filling is required, and sand derived from mill tailings, especially when not thoroughly cleaned, has been remarkably effective in sealing off and extinguishing mine fires. When natural sand is available on surface, or when it can be obtained from the mill tailings or tailings dump, the cost of using this material for fill will probably be considerably less than that of rock. In this paper it is not proposed to discuss all methods of filling, but to describe some of the methods used for placing sand fill and to make a brief comparison of their merits. Methods of Placing Sand Sand may be transported and placed underground by several methods, which may be classified as follows: 1. By Hand.—The sand, which must be comparatively dry, is taken down the shaft in cars on cages and is distributed to its destination in these cars, or it is dumped down raises and is drawn off and distributed by means of cars, wheelbarrows or scrapers.

WE NOT have to go so very far back, when measured in actual years, to what may be considered the beginning of the industrial era of the great West, the discovery of gold in California in 1848, just 74 years ago. By a strange coincidence, this event occurred within a few days of the signing of the treaty with Mexico which ceded California to the United States. Needless to describe the mighty wave of humanity that hurled itself toward the setting sun in response to that call. The single thought in every one's mind was gold. The gold as they found it in placers or ledges could be so easily worked, and the product was so readily transportable, and available immediately as money, that practically no attention was paid to deposits of the base metals, in the treatment of which cheap transportation was a paramount con-sideration; consequently little progress was made in anything but gold mining until after the Civil War. The next great step was accomplished when East and West were united by the successful construction of the Union Pacific Railroad from Omaha across the great plains and through the Rockies to meet the rails of the Central Pacific coming eastward across the Sierras. The industrial history of our great West really dates from the day when those two hands of steel were joined, on the shores of the Great Salt Lake at Prom-ontory Point,. May 10, 1869. That seems a long time ago when we think of the enormous changes that have been wrought since that day, and when we regard the rich empire that has sprung up in that western land. Into the new empire thus made accessible, by this first thread of steam transportation, flocked a new brood of adventurous spirits from the older communities of the East. This way walked Fate; and as she, went, flung far the line of destiny, That bound an untracked continent to brotherhood from sea to sea; That long gray trail of dream and hope, marked mile by mile with graves that keep On every barren hill and slope some stout heart lost in dreamless sleep. Patience and faith and fortitude were willed to it and justified; Stern, homely virtues, plain and rude, eternal as the sky and wide. Nor ever sea-king dared the sea in sterner mood than these who went Strong armed to wrest from Mystery their birthright, half a continent.

The so-called "paraffin dirt" of the Gulf Coast oil fields has been considered an indication of the possible presence of oil and gas, and not a few wells have been brought in solely on the basis of such evidence. In a sense, it may be empirically justified as evidence of the presence of oil or gas, though it cannot be said to be infallible. If the writer is correctly informed, its association with oil and gas was pointed out by Lee Hager some years ago, and while it is commonly mentioned by geologists and operators in conversation, no discussion seems to have found its way into print. The present interpretation is based on laboratory study rather than on field investigation, and is put forth with the hope of stimulating discussion which shall lead to more complete understanding. The term "paraffin dirt" has been applied to soils with a peculiar texture, which has been described as "curdy" or "rubbery." When moist, the material breaks much after the fashion of "green" cheese. It is rubbery under compression, but does not resemble rubber in tenacity or cohesion. When dry, the material ranges from hard clods to a horny mass of high tensile strength. The shrinkage in drying is very great, especially in the hornlike matter. The moist material ranges in color from dark brown in the specimens rich in organic matter to grayish in specimens containing more inorganic matter. All of the specimens studied were readily attacked by molds, which in some cases grew in great profusion on the samples. Samples exhibited a rather characteristic "swampy" or "mucky" odor when wet, and a characteristic odor of humic soils when moist. If the material is brought into suspension in water, very fine sand settles out and may be recovered by successive washing and decantation. The sand is almost entirely quartz, but contains occasional fragments of feldspar—more or less kaolinized and iron-stained. Practically all of the sand passes through a 100-mesh screen and the grains are extremely sharp —possibly below the limit of rounding. A flocculent mud, of clay and organic matter, remains in suspension for days. Some material is taken into solution in the water, imparting a slight tendency to froth when vigorously shaken. The results of partial analyses of four samples of "paraffin dirt," and, for comparison, one of a coastal plain soil are given in Table I.

"The effectiveness of two this compounds for copper sulphide depression in molybdenite flotation has been examined with batch bench scale tests.Both thioglycollate and trithiocarbonate proved to be good depressants producing results similar to those f or cyanide and hydrosulphide. Ferrocyanide was ineffective on the samplematerial tested.The depressing effect of thioglycollate was readily reversed by an addition of xanthate.IntroductionThe separation of molybdenite from copper sulphide minerals has been practised for a long time(1,2). The predominant scheme is to depress the copper sulphides while capitalizing on the ready floatability of molybdenite to effect the separation. There are many recipes for depressing the copper minerals(3), among them the addition of sodium cyanide, particularly if the copper is present primarily as chalcopyrite; some form of sulphide whether as sodium sulphide, sodium hydrosulphide or phosphorous pentasulphide when there is a mixture of copper sulphides such as bornite, chalcocite and chalcopyrite; potassium ferro cyanide may be used when chalcocite is the principal copper sulphide; peroxide or hypochlorite; as well as heating in the presence of lime. There are different mechanisms by which these reagent s depress the copper sulphides. Sodium cyanide and the sulphide-producing compounds apparently reduce the potential of the copper sulphides to the point where they ar e rendered unfloatable by xanthates . Another study(4) showed that after cyanide addition, chalcopyrite was rendered un floatabl e until the REDOX potential (measured with a gold electrode with a saturated calomel reference) had become more positive than -250 mY. If the chalcopyrite pulp was conditioned after the cyanide addition the REDOX potential increased slowly, whereas if air was introduced during the conditioning the potential r ose much more rapidly. The difference in time to reach the desired level of - 250 mV was as much as 20 minutes' 25 minutes being required when air was absent but less than 5 minutes when air was admitted . These observation s demonstrate some of the problems encountered when using cyanide to depress sulphides such as chalcopyrite . The system adjusts to counteract the depressing effect of the additive. To overcome this tendency it is necessary to either add an overdose at the beginning or to more or less continuously add the regulating reagent. In this study cyanide solution was added under automatic control to maintain a specified REDOX potential."

There are many different machine setup parameters and variables that affect the production of cone crushers in a mineral processing plant. One of these variables is the eccentric speed at which the cone gyrates. In June 2012, pilot tests were conducted on a 200 hp high speed cone crusher to determine the production and operating conditions over a wide spectrum of eccentric speed. Every plant will have variations in the ore characteristics and feed rates throughout the life of the mine, and at times throughout a single shift of operation, which result in non-optimal use of the crushing energy and inconsistent process control. For high speed cone crushers, the crusher will exhibit a different capacity, power required, and discharge size distribution as the speed ranges over the design limits of the machine. This study documents the measured variation in production and energy efficiency both when the crusher was ran at full capacity as well as when the feed to the crusher was not sufficient to run at full capacity. Overall, the results match theory and the capacity and power fluctuated by 25% and 17%, respectively, over the speed range when operated full while there was an overall trend of slightly coarser discharge size distribution as the speed decreased. The results with the fixed feed rate were more telling, as the crushers had 4-14% higher production when making a theoretical minus 12.5 mm product when operating at the optimal speed as compared to the worst speed in the ?typical? speed range for this application. Secondary analysis of the fixed tonnage testing also showed that the power draw was more consistent with lower magnitude spikes at the higher speeds (higher cavity level), as on average the standard deviation of the power draw increased from 7% to 18% and the peak power spikes from 20% to 48% over the speed range tested. The findings lay groundwork for more efficient plant design. Varying the speed of the crusher can be used to tune the crusher speed during commissioning, adapt to changing ore conditions over long periods of time, or be used as a dynamic input into an advanced control system. Each action above would serve to make the crusher(s) more productive and more energy efficient, and would also have mechanical benefits for the machine.
