Most developing projects face a range of technical and non-technical challenges, and examination of development histories can potentially provide insights into improved approaches to project development. The Kestanelik project in the Canakkale region of Western Turkey was acquired by Chesser Resources Ltd in 2008. Turkey is a significant and growing source of gold production, with sector participation by both domestic and international companies. While the broad ranges of challenges faced by developing projects is well known, there are relatively few case studies in which the range of technical, environmental, social and governance challenges are presented in a single contribution. Recent studies of undeveloped complex orebodies have particularly shown the extent to which environment, social and governance (ESG) complexities contribute to project delays and failures. The Kestanelik project faced a full range of technical and ESG complexities, and provides an illustrative example of the associated challenges. CITATION: Valenta, R, 2018. The concept of sub-aerial tailings deposit.ion using a managed rotational deposition system to form a deposit of partly-saturated tails for North American conditions was introduced by Knight and described by Knight and Haile (1983). The application of the sub-aerial technique, together with continuous removal of all surface waters and underdrainage outflows from the Key Lake uranium mine I s tailing storage facility in Northern Saskatchewan, Canada, has been documented by Knight and Haile (1984). Since then, the concept is being applied in the United States to tailings facilities in California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Idaho and South Dakota.

A belt drive attendant was working underground during his shift at the junction of two belt drives. He worked alone, but communicated with others at the mine by underground phone. At noon his shift foreman stopped by his workstation. At 2:00 p.m. he was contacted by phone by a fellow belt drive attendant. At 5:00 p.m., he was found dead by the oncoming evening shifter.

"Introduction The Boundary Dam Mine is located 5 km south of the City of Estevan, Saskatchewan and is operated by Manitoba and Saskatchewan Coal Company Ltd., one of the Luscar companies. The entire production of 1.7 million tonnes per year is delivered to the Boundary Dam Generating Station of Saskatchewan Power Corporation. Geology There are basically two seams mined on the property, the main Estevan seam ranging in thickness from 3.0 m to 4.5 m with partings and the upper Roche Percee seam (roughly 15 m to 23 m above the Estevan) which ranges from 0.6 m to 2.0 m in thickness. Most of the reserves are concentrated in the Estevan seam, the Roche Percee only being mined whenever its thickness makes it economic to recover. The coal measures belong to the Ravenscrag Formation of Tertiary (Paleocene) Age. This formation is widespread in North Dakota and Montana and contains the lignite fields of North Dakota and subbituminous coals of Montana. The formation is gently tilted to the southeast at Boundary (0.5 degrees) and consists of weak sandstones, siltstones and silty mudstones. Reserves and Coal Quality The present minesite encompasses a coal reserve of approximately 50 million tonnes calculated to a maximum stripping depth of 37 metres or 20:1 mining ratio. The reserves form only a part of the total reserves in the Estevan area which are owned by the Saskatchewan Power Corporation. The coal being mined is classed as Lignite ""A"" and has the following specifications:"

An overview presentation of the fast-track start up of Cerro Colorado, a new copper heap leach project in Chile's Atacama' desert. A brief explanation 'of location of the property, exploration history, geol-ogy, reserves and development are presented. The overview includes mining, crushing, agglomeration, and the solvent extraction-electrowinning recovery process. Challenges and requirements specific to heap leach systems will be addressed and analyzed. A detailed description will be given of the mobile heap leach conveying and stacking systems used in the building of heaps for on-and off-pad operations.

"INTRODUCTION The Segerstorm-Heizer property was examined by engineers 3/ of the Bureau of Mines in May and June 1942 and Mach 1943. As a result of these examination, the Nevada State Department of Highways,constructed 9.3 miles of graveled road under the mine access-road program. A magnetometer survey was made by the Geophysical Division 4/ in October 1943, and as a result the Mining Branch set up and conducted a core-drilling,project. Work on the deposit started May 24, 1944, and was suspended on July 31, 1944, but was resumed on December 4, 1944 and continued until completion on March 27, 1945.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as it, primary objective the more effective resource to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch Lowell B. The Vulture Mine near Wickenburg, Arizona was a major gold producer from 1863 to 1942, having yielded about 11,000 kg Au and 8,000 kg Ag. Gold occurs as coarse native metal and electrum in quartz veins and also finely disseminated within a quartz monzonite sill and its silicified wall rock. The sill is semi-conformable within a Proterozoic volcaniclastic-dominated sequence all dipping north about 35°. Early mining focused on the vein-hosted gold particularly in the immediate hanging wall and footwall of the sill. Later efforts included some open-pitting of the outcropping sill and adjacent altered and mineralized rock. Two sets of post-mineral faults have complicated the orebody geometry.

The Floridan aquifer, which underlies all of Florida, yields water with a sulfate content of less than 50 parts per million in the north-western part and throughout most of the center of the State. In the southern part of Florida and along the most of the east coast, the sulfate concentration generally exceeds 100 parts per million and is as much as 1,700 parts per million. The sulfate concentration tends to be higher in the deeper zones of the aquifer. This map shows the sulfate concentration in the upper part of the aquifer. Sulfate is found in almost all natural water. Sulfate in rainwater is dissolved from impurities and gases in the atmosphere. Rankama and Sahama (1955, p. 314) report that the average sulfate content of rainwater is two parts per million; however, concentrations have been as high as 283 parts per million. Much of the sulfate in rainwater comes from hydrogen sulfide gas which is generated in shallow water on the continental shelves. The combustion of bituminous coal used for heating and industrial purposes seems to be an important local source of sulfate.

Process mineralogy is an inter-discipline in the fields of mineralogy and mineral processing. As a predicting and trouble-shooting tool, process mineralogy helps address all mineralogical issues and problems related to mineral processing. It provides useful information on process design and optimisation, flow sheet development and cost reduction. As more and more complex and refractory ores are being discovered and processed, it is believed that process mineralogy will gain more attention and play a more important role in process design and optimisation. This paper will first discuss the scope of process mineralogy and mineralogical factors that may affect mineral processing of various ores, and then focuses on the application of process mineralogy in process design and optimisation through case studies.

Blast furnace operators have been steadily increasing their quality requirements on burden material. These requirements include a high reduction rate of the ore burden as well as good strength at the beginning and during the whole blast furnace operation. Special requirements are made on the softening and melting behavior which ensures an optimal formation of the cohesive zone in the blast furnace. On the whole, the self-fluxed and olivine-based pellets meet these higher requirements due to their chemical composition, especially in the pure pellet operation. In the mixed sinter/pellet operation partly-fluxed and acid iron ore pellets can be appropriately used. The paper describes the demands on, and characteristics of, different kinds of pellets used in the Federal Republic of Germany.

The investigation, selection, and implementation of remedial activities for large, complex mining and milling sites is dependent on the cost-effective management of tailing and waste materials. Site investigations evaluate the contaminant source areas, assess the potential release rate of contaminants, and determine the acceptable contaminant release rate for the site. Selection of appropriate remedial activities is based on evaluation of constructability, reliability, performance, effectiveness, permanence and cost. Remedial technologies available for tailing and waste material include removal, consolidation, capping and drainage control. Proper implementation and documentation of the selected remedial activities are critical to the overall success or failure of the remedial program. A step-by-step process, established at the initiation of a project, should accurately document all construction activities, monitor environmental conditions at the site, assess the performance of the remedial activities, and, ultimately certify that the remedial activities have met relevant and appropriate standards. Case histories are presented for a uranium mill at Uravan, Colorado and a lead, zinc mine at Gilman, Colorado. These case histories provide examples as to the combination of remedial technologies that have been applied at these specific sites.

Hornestake's Mclaughlin Mine is the first commercial application of pressure oxidation pretreatment of gold prior to cyanidation. Inherent to the autoclave process are several liquid/solid separations. Flocculant consumption represents a significant portion of the consumable reagent costs at McLaughlan. This paper focuses on the efforts of the Operating, Metallurgy and Engineering groups to improve thickener operation and minimize flocculant consumption. An operating philosophy incorporating feed solids control, increasing flocculant dilution water and minimizing flocculant solution shear has resulted in a reduction in 1986 flocculant costs of $0.054/t ($0.06 st) versus 1985 costs. Additional changes are projected to result in a further cost reduction of $0.20/t ($0.22/.st) in 1987.

The ventilation network problem, having both fixed and nonfixed operating points as control devices, is examined in this paper. Emphasizing the concept of solving a system of n equations in n unknowns, this paper presents the generalized problem formulation, some conditions under which the problem does not have a unique solution, and a solution procedure based on the Newton (or Newton-Raphson) method. A numerical example is included.

Tg Soda Ash has operated a shortwall mining system in the Green River, Wyoming trona district since August. 1982. The system has proven to be highly productive. In an effort to reduce the relatively expensive development mining and Improve mine planning flexibility, a method to mine the return air tailgate during the shortwall retreat was tested beginning In April, 1987. As of June. 1988 four shortwall panels had been completed utilizing the advancing tailgate, producing over 815,000 tons.

A review of the geology and mineralogy of several of the better known hydrothermal platinum-group metal (PGM) deposits is undertaken. Along with new data from two recently discovered occurrences in Nevada, a number of common characteristics of these deposits are identified. Newly described PGM occurrences in Nevada are the abandoned Gibellini mine workings characterized by limestone-hosted hydrothermal Mn-V-Zn-Ni mineralization and the granite-hosted base-and precious-metal veins of the Gingerload claims.

The use of froth flotation as a means of separating and upgrading sulfide mineral concentrates is standard industrial practice throughout the world. It is ap-parent from observing the industrial practice of sulfide mineral flotation over the last decade that progress is being made in optimizing the operating aspects of flotation. Examples of this are the availability of improved instrumentation and related computer control devices, the modification of mechanical flotation cell designs, the introduction of column cells, better reagent dosage control, blending of feed ores, increasing attention to coarse and fine particle separations, the successful introduction of new frother chemistries, etc.

Studies of benthic recolonization following the cessation of dredging in U.K. waters and elsewhere are limited, and are largely confined to experimental circumstances. Investigations of the physical and biological status of licensed areas in the U.K. at various times following cessation of commercial dredging are very limited and so judgments as to the likely progress towards environmental restoration and the time-scales are often based on predictions rather than real data. This study was established to address this deficiency by assessing the status of seabed substrata and associated benthic fauna within and outside areas where dredging had ceased and to conduct follow up sampling to monitor progress towards full recolonization.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to measure the improvement provided by fine bubbles on the flotation of fine-sized particles (minus 20-um size) in an effort to improve flotation efficiency in our domestic minerals industry. The turbulent velocity distributions of the fluid within the flotation cell were measured as a function of time and position and used to increase the precision of a fine particle, turbulent flotation model. For the mineral system investigated, improved flotation response was obtained under laboratory conditions by using small bubbles and intense agitation. These results matched the model's predicted response.
