A potential of electric pulse disintegration in benification used for primary deposits ores containing precious metals is shown. Of special significance is that PGM and gold grains, being highly plastic, are easily liberated and are not smeared on the disintegrated rock fragments surface. It al-lows gravity separation, which is less expensive and more efficient, to be used instead of chemical processing, which is expensive and environmentally faulty.

Environmental concerns and increasing mine development costs have created a need for early information on gold recovery from its host environment. The habit, association, and approximate abundance of minerals which contain unacceptable metallic ions which may be released during process of concentration of gold should be identified in exploration drill core. One case of a "clean" gold orebody is described to show that early petrographic studies contributed to a rapid decision to mine a small deposit by open pit and to custom mill the ore in an already restricted effluent environment. A second example describes identification of an undesirable mercury content and resulting action taken.

A measurement-based ground control management system, commonly employed in coal mines, has been successfully implemented in a UK potash mine operating at a depth of over 800 m. This system includes the routine deployment of telltales in roadways throughout the mine to mitigate against the risk of large-scale roof falls and the deployment of detailed ?design monitoring? instrumentation for ongoing design verification. The routine monitoring systems used in coal mines have not been, to date, commonly applied in potash mines, despite the similar, variable weak geology and associated ground control hazards. Monitoring information from the site indicates that telltales can be deployed to monitor roof conditions, with action levels based on differential rates of strain, as opposed to absolute movement.

The partial pressure ratios of sulfur and oxygen for several copper flash smelting plants were derived using the Reddy-Blander (RB) model and predicted dissolved sulfur contents available in the literature. The sulfide capacities (Cs) of six different flash smelting plants (FeO-CuOo.5- CaO-MgO-FeOu-AlO15-SiO2) slags were calculated. The log (PO2/PS2) versus matte grades of various industrial processes was determined. The PO2/PS2 ratio increased with an increase of copper grade. The calculated partial pressure ratios for the copper flash smelting are in good agreement with those of the experimental data.

Terrestrial heat flow has been determined for four boreholes in the Montreal area. The mean value of the results (uncorrected for glacial effects) is 0.790 ± 0.053 x 10-6 cal/ cm2/sec (95 per cent confidence limits). Thermal gradients were determined using a thermistor probe and d-c bridge, and also by a new method using a probe-contained phase-shift oscillator, the output frequency of the oscillator being a function of probe temperature. Thermal conductivity determinations were made on core from the boreholes, using a divided bar apparatus. INTRODUCTION T HIS paper concerns the terrestrial heat flow in the St. Lawrence lowland of Quebec, as determined from measurements on four of the numerous boreholes drilled in this region for gas and oil. Determination of the final pit limits of an open pit copper mine is a problem that has far reaching effects on the life, profitability and operation of a mine. The solution to this problem requires that all of the significant variables affecting the final pit limits be considered together with corporate objectives as the guiding principle. This paper discusses the use of these variables and how they should be applied to plan the future of a mine. The objectives of a final pit plan; are determination of the extent and location of ore reserves, the allowable stripping to be accomplished to uncover the ore, the final pit surface intercept, final pit topography and the contained metal values in both ore and waste. The objectives of the plan must be consistent with corporate objectives as they pertain to profit, future investment in the mine, return on investment, alternative investments, conservation and perpetuation of the corporate entity. The subject will be treated in three parts: economic considerations, effect of leaching and pit design technique. At the outset, it is assumed; that the extent of and metal values in the mineralized area to be considered have been reasonably defined by development drilling and sampling.

In an approach to the complicated study of bauxite from Les Baux de Provence it is necessary to consider the paleogeographical context of all the bauxites in southern France. These bauxites are of Karstic type, belonging to a metallogenic area extending from the Pyrenees Mountains to the Alpine Massif. Within this area each deposit does not always correspond to the same geological period. There are differing opinions regarding the origin of Karstic-type bauxite and a discussion of these various theories is beyond the scope of this paper. Bauxite of Les Baux, in Provence, was discovered in 1821 by the chemist, Berthier, near this picturesque village located in the region of Arles. It is Les Baux from which the name of bauxite originates. For a long time this bauxite was of no interest because of high silica 'and mediocre alumina content. Besides, the calcium carbonate content is somewhat high and is one of the main characteristics of Les Baux bauxite. The problem of exploration of the Les Baux deposit has been to prospect minable zones according to traditional norms where silica and carbonate are low.

"The mechanical behavior and the fracture characteristics of composites with DGEBA/TETA epoxy matrix reinforced with up to 40% in volume of continuous and thinner ramie fibers were evaluated by tensile tests. Specimens with selected thin fibers aligned along the tensile axis were room temperature tested to rupture. The fracture surface was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. The results showed significant increase in both the ultimate tensile strength and the elastic modulus. The fracture analysis indicated the possible mechanism for the fiber/matrix interaction, which could be responsible for the composite performance.IntroductionThe fiber reinforced polymer composite emerged in the middle of last century as a versatile engineering material for applications requiring mechanical resistance in association with lightness. Its most commonly used example is ""fiberglass'', i.e., a thermoset polymer matrix composite reinforced with glass fiber. Indeed, ""fiberglass"" has a specific strength of the order of 500 MPa.cm3/g, which is the double of the strongest steels like the maraging. This motivated, at earlier times, ""fiberglass"" to replace many conventional materials including wood and natural fiber composites. Today, ""fiberglass"" has a wide range of uses from aerospace systems and appliances to sport and leisure components. However, its fabrication as well as those of any synthetic fiber such as carbon and aramid composites, requires a relatively large amount of energy. Presently, a growing concern exists regarding the consequences to the environmental by gases like C02 associated with both the energy consumption and the processing of synthetic fibers and their composites. These gases are well known responsible for global warming [1]."

The gold ores in the Jerritt Canyon district have been recognized as refractory since they were first encountered by FMC geologists in 1976. Upon obtaining managing rights as joint venture partner, Freeport McMoRan Inc. developed an operating plan featuring carbon-in-leach gold recovery techniques for the oxide portion of the ores and a patented sulphide oxidation step followed by chlorination for treating the organic carbon constituents of the refractory ores prior to CIL gold recovery. The plant was successfully started up in 1981 with the first gold poured on July 4, 1981. Initial plant throughput was designed to be 2495 MTPD (2750 STPD) total through the dual processing trains.

"Honored with a DFI 2006 Special Recognition Award, the Four Bears Bridge was constructed across Lake Sakakawea and opened to traffi c in September 2005. The very large lake size and severe winter conditions required an effi cient foundation design capable of resisting extreme ice loading and able to be effi ciently constructed in waters up to 90' deep (27.4m).DESIGNING FOR EFFICIENCYLocated in a remote area of North Dakota, the Four Bears Bridge replacement was a major undertaking for the North Dakota Department of Transportation, with dual goals of providing a new structure that would endure a severe environment, while enhancing the natural beauty of the area. Competing bids would achieve the best price for the owner, challenging the design team to creatively solve the engineering challenges unique to the site. Foundations for North Dakota’s new Four Bears Bridge had to accommodate water level fl uctuations of up to 40 feet (12m), along with extreme ice loading and be effi cient in order to be the low cost solution at the time of bidding. All three major criteria were achieved through the use of an effi cient ‘fl oating’ lost precast concrete cofferdam founded on steel pipe piles, which allowed the contractor to achieve the project schedule. The result is an award-winning bridge that is contextually sensitive to the environment. The bridge aesthetics pay tribute to the Three Affi liated Tribes, the Mandan, Arikara and Hidatsa, who reside on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation, adjacent to the bridge site.The original Four Bears Bridge was located over the Missouri River near Elbowoods, the native grounds of the Three Affi liated Tribes. Construction of the Garrison Dam in the early 1950’s created Lake Sakakawea, a fl ood control project on the Missouri River, and resulted in the area being fl ooded. The bridge, along with many tribal members, was relocated to a site near New Town. The bridge provides the primary crossing of Lake Sakakawea and is a critically important transportation element for the residents of the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation. The relocated bridge had become functionally obsolete and not replacing it would require a detour of 170 miles (274km). The North Dakota Department of Transportation determined that it should be replaced. In order to achieve the most effective solution, the North Dakota Department of Transportation selected a design team responsible for the creation of competing steel and concrete designs that were competitively bid. The design team was led by Kadrmas Lee & Jackson, with FIGG responsible for the concrete bridge design, while Lichtenstein Consulting and Kadrmas Lee & Jackson completed the alternate steel bridge design."

This paper addresses the impact on performance of column height (H), and column height to diameter (H/D) ratio by modelling the effect of HID on mixing and consequently on recovery and grade. Mineral recovery increases with increasing H/D ratio for a constant column volume and feed flowrate, while the concentrate grade decreases to a minor extent. Columns 10-15m in height with H/D-10 are well suited for feed rates 150-600 L/min. Maximum H/D is determined by the gas carrying capacity, an important consideration for pilot units where H/D?200.

American Indian lands contain a vast amount of renewable and non-renewable resources that have consequently been mined (Smith and Frehner). Therefore, it is understandable that tribes are concerned about environmental impacts from mining and their ability to minimize and mitigate these impacts. This has created a need to better understand mining and its environmental impacts. The University of Arizona Superfund Research Program Mining educational modules developed educational modules for tribal colleges focusing on environmental impacts of mining, remediation of mining wastes, and sociocultural impacts of mining. Educational modules are independently packaged units of study designed to enhance the learning process and can be modified and adapted to different learning scenarios and objectives. In addition to providing specialized knowledge, the modules feature hands-on activities, incorporation of technology, student involvement, discussion, and exchange of ideas. Modules will aim incorporate traditional ecological knowledge and approaches that promote effective science learning for native students. Modules are designed to augment existing associates of science programs (e.g. biology, chemistry) currently offered at tribal colleges and can be modified for use in K-12 education and for non-tribal audiences.

Abstract Laboratory methods are now in use whereby the temperature and pressure during the crystallization of hydrothermal minerals can be determined. The techniques include the use of the decrepitation method of studying liquid inclusions, and electrical measurements of pyrite. The determinations are sufficiently accurate that the data can be used in solving a variety of ore deposition problems. Within the last year, several new laboratory techniques have been developed in the Geochemical Laboratory of the Department of Geological Sciences, University of Toronto. The results of several tests of ore by these methods have proved to be useful in treating some problems which previously were considered unsolvable. It is now possible to determine the temperature of deposition of most of the minerals in a hydrothermal ore deposit, also the depth below the surface during deposition. Measurements can also be made of the reopening history of a complex ore. The temperature-pressure determinations depend upon the fact that minerals deposited from a hydrothermal solution always trap a small amount of the solution at the time of crystallization. The solution, being predominantly composed of water, has a density which depends upon the temperature and the pressure prevailing during crystallization. After ore deposition is complete, erosion and isostatic uplift finally exhumes the vein. During this slow fall in temperature and pressure, the solution contracts and a gas bubble appears. If the trapped solution in the mineral is examined, the gas-liquid ratio records the density of the solution at the time the mineral was deposited (except for a slight change in the volume of the mineral). The thermal expansion and compressibility of water and water solutions are known to a sufficient degree that, if the gas /liquid ratio can be determined, the temperature-pressure relations during deposition can be calculated.

Rechargeable lithium batteries are one of the most promISIng technology in battery development. Although Li ion batteries have been used as an alternative to the more polluting and less performing Ni-Cd batteries, Li ion batteries have limited life and their disposal is uncertain. It is imperative that valuables from wastes, such as lithium, should be recovered. The main objective of the present work was to characterize secondary lithium batteries for cellular phones. This was done using unit operations of mining processing, x-ray diffraction (XRD), chemical analyses and the rmogravimetric analysis (TG). The unit operations were hammer mill grinding, knife mill grinding, size separation and magnetic separation. After the hammer grinding process, the plastic cases were almost intact, however, they have released the cylindrical lithium batteries themselves and these parts correspond to 70% of the total battery weight.

The prevalent strategic approach in the mining industry is one of planning. However, it is widely recognised that planning does not work in complex and uncertain situations (Mintzberg, 1994), such as those associated with ‘above ground’ non-technical orebody complexity (Trench, Packey and Sykes, 2014). Mintzberg, Ahlstrand and Lampel (2009) suggest the focus instead should be on strategic ‘thinking and doing’ and using the many ways to think about strategy to make sense of complex, uncertain, and unique situations. They therefore place great value in cognitive flexibility. Scenarios development utilizes several different thinking styles and thus assists with this type of flexible strategic thinking (Figure 1). The ‘Centre for Exploration Targeting (CET) Scenarios’ were developed with the ‘Oxford Scenario Planning Approach’ (OSPA) (Ramírez and Wilkinson, 2016). The OSPA aims more to improve the thinking skills of decision makers, rather than forecasting per se (Wack, 1985a, 1985b). As such, this paper focuses less on the content of the scenarios and instead on the practical value of scenarios in strategizing. "Tensile tests and scanning electron microscopy-electron backscattered diffraction (SEM-EBSD) analysis were performed in an Al-Mg-Si alloy to clarify the effect of annealing and cold-rolling reduction on the texture formation. The hot-rolled specimens were cold-rolled with the reduction of 58-75%(CR1), followed by annealing at 773 K for 5 min(IA). The secondary cold-rolling(CR2)for the IA specimens with the reduction of 33–66%, followed by the solution heat treatment(ST), were performed. Focusing on the CR1 and CR2 specimens, the average r-values increased with higher primary and lower secondary cold-rolling reduction, respectively. This was considered to be due to the increase of r-values measured in the direction of 45 degree with respect to rolling direction, caused by the formation of the ß-fiber components (Brass {011}<211>, Copper {112}<111> and S {123}<634>) with high density. Based on the texture analysis of annealed specimens it was suggested that the high density of the ß-fiber components after IA and the small amount of stored strain energy of CR2 introduced by the lower cold-rolling reduction remained the ?-fiber components even after solution treatment.INTRODUCTION Al-Mg-Si alloys have been applied to automobile body applications, due to their excellent paint-bake hardening (age-hardening) and corrosion resistance compared to other aluminum alloy. On the other hand, the mechanical properties and deep drawability of Al-Mg-Si alloys are inferior to those of steels. Thus, it is important to improve the mechanical properties and deep drawability in order to expand the application components. One of the best methods to improve the deep drawability is to increase the Lankford coefficient (r-value). Previous studies reported that the increase of the average r-value ( ) improves the deep drawability. The relationship between the r-value and texture of the alloy is also well known. Inoue et al. reported that the ß-fiber components, such as Brass ({011}<211>), Copper ({112}<111>) and S ({123}<634>), increase the r-value measured in the direction of 45o with respect to the rolling direction. r"

There are many underground mining software tools available to plan and schedule the development of underground mines. A shortfall of these tools is the optimization of the underground equipment and strategy in order to maximize the development rate. This paper will illustrate how the SimMine® software was used to maximize underground development at Petra Diamonds&apos; Cullinan Diamond Mine. It will also determine the effect of various development strategies and equipment capacities on the underground development rate and pinpoint potential bottlenecks in the mine development cycle.

Various geophysical tools have been tested over the last eight years to evaluate their usefulness in defining damaged rock zones in an underground facility at the WIPP site in New Mexico. These tools include direct current and frequency domain electrical methods and seismic tomography. The electrical measurements show a "drying rind" to exist around older excavations. Seismic tomography confirms that a rind of lower velocity has developed along walls. In combining these tools, a monitoring program has been proposed to observe long-term changes in bedded salt. Results from the monitoring of electrical data over a 2-year time period illustrate the applicability of the technique in an underground environment.

Spontaneous combustion in western U.S. coal mines has been recognized as a serious problem which requires unique solutions. Methods have been developed for longwall mining which rely on the existence of an oxygen-deficient atmosphere in the gob for control of the spontaneous combustion hazard rather than the use of bleeder systems. Monitoring of the gob atmosphere is required to protect against the possibility of an explosion and to detect spontaneous heatings. Data from an example mine employing such a system is included to illustrate normal gob gas trends and is compared to abnormal trends which resulted from and were indicative of a fire. Under normal circumstances the oxygen (O2) and carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations decline rapidly as the longwall face retreats. Samples taken from a leaking seal in the example mine prior to a spontaneous heating showed virtually no oxygen depletion, contained erratic CO concentrations, and indicated the existence of hydrogen, a fire indicator. The appearance of an abnormal trend in the gob atmosphere can be used as an early warning of spontaneous heatings.

"INTRODUCTION As underground mining continues to operate at deeper depths and in more complex geologic and geometric conditions, there has been an increased demand for higher design standards in ground control safety and stability within the mining industry. Over the past 20 years, NIOSH has developed, validated, and distributed a number of free software packages (ALPS, ARMPS, AMSS, ARBS, etc.) for the safe design of underground coal mines with respect to ground control. While these programs were initially developed on a, “stand alone model,” where all program data resides on an individual or workgroup computer, modern day web applications have begun to migrate toward a, “multiple-tier model,” allowing multiple users to access an application through an Internet connection. webGroundControl provides users with access to NIOSH ground control design software (ARBS, ALPS, and ARMPS) utilizing a web-based three-tier architecture allowing users to easily access ground control designs, perform on-demand calculations, and provide online collaboration between operational personnel and engineers through a web server. Given advancements in cloud computing as well as the expansion of Internet connectivity on the surface and underground, webGroundControl users will be able to access the applications anywhere (where permissible) at any time. As web-based computing technologies continue to advance and cloud computing gains popularity and momentum, there is an industry need to develop Internet based applications for mine and ground control design (Barczak et al., 2016). The purpose of this paper is to introduce and familiarize those in the mining industry with the basic framework and, more specifically, the user-interface of the webGroundControl application. It is expected that the mining industry will rapidly embrace this new product and webGroundControl will be a new paradigm for mining engineering computer applications. APPLICATION ARCHITECTURE With the advent of cloud computing, web-based applications have become more popular with their adoption of multiple-tier, or n-tier, architecture containing independently operating tiers. The three-tier application architecture utilized in webGroundControl (as outlined in Agioutantis and Newman, 2016) contains a Presentation Tier (Web Server), Logic Tier (Logic/Application Server), and Data Tier (Data Server) as shown in Figure 1. While tiers have the ability to be deployed across and operating on multiple servers, webGroundControl is currently being deployed on a single server located on a university desktop computer. The separation of the application into a series of tiers greatly increases the maintainability and scalability allowing for the adoption of new technologies that can be applied to a single tier without redesigning the software package. The Presentation Tier maintains the user interface translating client requests (through a web server) and displaying results (through a web browser). The Presentation Tier allows for on-demand access from multiple users and compatibility with a variety of personal computers, Smartphones, tablets, etc. on different operating systems. The Presentation Tier has been developed with respect to the HTML and JavaScript languages. Through the utilization of CSS, a coding language which describes the style of an HTML document, the webGroundControl display is able to spontaneously adapt to any browser and any screen. The development of the Presentation Tier will be discussed in more detail in subsequent sections of this paper."
