ON THE occasion of the eightieth birthday of Captain Robert W. Hunt, the Iron and Steel Committee of the Institute, desiring to commemorate the great contributions made to the steel industry by Captain Hunt during his long career, conceived the idea of a Hunt Medal to be awarded annually by the Institute for meritorious contributions to the art of making steel. The project was received enthusiastically by all to whom it was proposed, especially by Captain Hunt's partners and employees who considered it their right, and asked for the privilege of -. - raising the necessary funds within their own circle. This was agreed to, and the Institute has received from them $7500 as an endowment fund to provide an annual award, and $1000 for the expenses of providing of medal.

(Cleveland :Meeting, October, 1012.) In general, the art of securing copper from sulphide ores or concentrates may be said to consist of : (1) separation, in the molten state, of copper sulphide with some iron sulphide, from the great bulk of gangue-material, followed by (2) elimination of sulphur and iron from the molten matte, by oxidation and fluxing, leaving metallic copper. The definition is made broad enough to cover the general practice, whether or not the ore or concentrate is given a preliminary roast for the removal of surplus sulphur. The above process, which I will designate as the smelting process, makes necessary the presence in the ore, or the addition thereto, of such silica, lime, and iron as may be necessary for the formation of a light and fusible slag, together with sufficient sulphur and iron for the formation of copper-matte, and also the addition to the matte of sufficient silica for the oxidation and fluxing-out of the iron. These items, together with the cost of fuel sufficient for melting the mass, constitute important items of cost in the copper-smelting process. Numerous cases where fluxing-materials are scarce or dear, or where fuel is expensive, have caused special attention to be given recently to the wet process of copper-extraction, which may be designated as consisting of forming soluble copper salts which are then washed or leached out of the ore or concentrates by dissolving in water or acid. THERE has been a running discussion over the past several years with respect to the life and adequacy of our natural gas reserves. Some of the experts agree on one phase of the subject at least-that eventually it will be necessary to augment deliveries of natural gas in the northern markets by the development of a more or less comparable synthetic gas made from coal. The purpose of this paper is to point out: 1. It may be later than a good many people think-the demand for addi¬tional domestic and commercial pipeline gas in at least one section of the North will probably be felt rather keenly before an adequate synthetic pipe¬line-gas project, developed on economic lines, could be completed, even if initiated in the near future. 2. The evidence is considerable that such a project would be technically sound and economically self-supporting, although the margin of profit at first might be so small and the magnitude of an economic enterprise so great -that financing would be impossible without Government aid in some form or other. The part of the country referred to is the heavily populated section in the northeast of the United States. To simplify an examination of the situa¬tion, let us take the potential marketing areas within range to the north and east of the three pipelines: 1. Tennessee Gas Transmission Co. as it enters Erie County, New York state. 2. Texas Eastern Transmission Corporation just before the tap that sup¬plies the general Philadelphia area. 3. Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line Corporation as it enters the state of New Jersey. The sources of gas for these three pipelines are in Texas and Louisiana. The ultimate maximum combined capacity of the three lines at the points stated is approximately 1,200,000,000 cu ft per 24 hr at the maximum load factor probable of attainment in normal operation. The areas supplied by the three lines north and east of the points stated, or assumed as eventual markets, are: 1. Central New York state, from Buffalo to Albany (both inclusive).

Aços IF (Interstitial Free) são materiais com grande capacidade de serem conformados a frio, normalmente na forma de chapas, utilizados na indústria automobilística na fabricação de carrocerias de automóveis e outros componentes similares. Neste artigo foi realizado ensaio isotérmico de dupla deformação com objetivo de determinar a fração de amaciamento que ocorre no intervalo entre passes e o parâmetro de amaciamento4. O método para obter estes dados foi utilizando software da Instron em conjunto a maquina de torção e o forno de indução. Os resultados obtidos foram de grande importância no estudo para avaliar o comportamento do material quanto aos fenômenos metalúrgicos e termomecânicos envolvidos, ou seja, se ocorre recuperação, recristalização dinâmica entre outros processos de restauração do material quando submetido a forças externas em elevadas temperaturas.

Introducing online X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzers in the mining and processing industries can lower costs and improve the representativeness and speed of analysis. The applicability of the CON-XTM industrial conveyor XRF analyzer for continuous measurement of potassium content in process materials was demonstrated at various stages of potassium muriate (MOP) production. The CON-X analyzer produced reliable and accurate results for sylvinite ore (27–36% KCl), MOP cake after flotation (88–97% KCl), and NaCl residue (1.5–5% KCl). Tests of the analyzer at an MOP-producing plant showed a < 0.5% difference between online and laboratory results.

A Samarco Mineração utiliza combustível gasoso para geração de energia térmica para o endurecimento pelotas de minério de ferro. O balanceamento térmico do forno ocorre através do controle das malhas de instrumentação que são compostas por válvulas de controle, sensores de temperatura, queimadores e sistema de suprimento de Gás Natural Industrial (GNI) para a combustão. A combustão é realizada por meio de queimadores, que são alimentados por uma mistura gasosa de GNI e Ar Atmosférico, ambos a temperatura ambiente. A função do GNI é fornecer a sua máxima capacidade energética para a produção de calor. Já o Ar atmosférico é resfriar o queimador, e estabilizar a chama dentro da câmara e ar primário de combustão. No entanto excesso de ar é fator determinante para eficiência de combustão, pois controla os produtos da queima, entre eles a temperatura. Um grande excesso de ar é indesejável, pois reduz a temperatura da chama, e aumenta as perdas de calor devido à entalpia dos gases.

O presente trabalho possibilita o entendimento e a análise dos processos de conformação a quente dos metais. Isto, pela validação experimental do modelo de Johnson-Cook, para descrever o comportamento dos materiais no regime plástico, para grandes deformações, às altas taxas de deformações e nas altas temperaturas. Um entendimento dos parâmetros do modelo, utilizando-se um método analítico numérico simples, rápido e confiável foi desenvolvido anteriormente pela linha de pesquisa em Conformação Plástica dos Metais na UNESP – Campus de Ilha Solteira, obtendo-se as constantes empíricas do modelo referido. É proposto nesse trabalho a validação experimental do método simplificado para determinação dos parâmetros empíricos do modelo de Johnson-Cook através de um ensaio de tração a quente, considerando as propriedades mecânicas dos materiais analisados experimentalmente e/ou de dados de materiais disponíveis na literatura. De maneira geral, os resultados experimentais foram satisfatórios para o aço AISI 1045 à temperatura de 500 ºC, ensaiado à taxa de deformação de 1000 s-1, quando comparados aos resultados teóricos previstos pelo modelo proposto por SCADUTO e MENEZES. Particularmente, foi possível evidenciar erros máximos de 1,33% para o parâmetro n, 13,15% para o parâmetro B, 295,00% para o parâmetro C e 4,14% para o parâmetro m.

Managing and analysing the vast amounts of data collected in a mining project effectively is crucial for enhancing the project's economic feasibility. The efficient utilization of this data is critical to minimising the time spent on projects and increasing project value. Process engineers can effectively integrate geometallurgical data into plant operations by employing analytical tools like Python, significantly optimizing the mine-to-mill process. This practical approach is a game-changer in the mining industry. Classifying a geomet dataset into units of similar characteristics (properties of the ore) is an important outcome of a geomet study. This approach simplifies data classification, allowing for class-by-class process modelling, which improves the decision-making process in mine planning and development. Classifying a geomet dataset involves using grade, lithology, and test work data (if available) to create blocks of similar characteristics, known as ‘geomet units.’ Compared to conventional methodologies, these units provide context and empirical evidence that can be more accurately mapped onto block-by-block process flowsheet development and net present value (NPV) estimation. This robust classification method reduces a project's technical risks and influences the initial mine planning sequence to maximise profitability. Defining robust geomet units with data sets with similar material is challenging due to the vast amounts of data available and the database's high heterogeneity. The methodology's purpose is to minimise time-consuming low-value-adding aspects of geometallurgy. The approach is different for a greenfield and a brownfield study, as all the valuable data in a brownfield process can be utilised to define the geomet units. Python has various libraries providing multiple machine-learning algorithms to assist in classification. The k-means algorithm is used for clustering, and the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) method is used to quantify the effect of each feature on the clustering results. However, even with automation, the methodology still requires a keen eye to account for the nuances that appear from project to project.

Kaolinite is of very fine particle size in nature and thus its dispersion plays a key role in the successful removal of kaolinite in iron ore flotation and selective flocculation processes. As the most widely used dispersant in the world, sodium silicate has been used as a standard dispersant for kaolinite in the iron ore industry. However, the actual effect of sodium silicate on the colloid stability of kaolinite particles and its dispersion mechanism remain unknown in the literature. In this work, the dispersion effect and dispersion mechanisms of some common inorganic and organic dispersants, including sodium silicate, polyphosphate and a low molecular weight polyacrylic acid, on kaolinite particles were systematically investigated through electrophoretic mobility and colloidal stability studies over a wide pH range. It was found that sodium silicate-kaolinite interactions only take place in the neutral and acidic pH range, while polyacrylic acid and polyphosphate interact with kaolinite from pH 3 to 10.5. Consequently, sodium silicate only disperses kaolinite at neutral and acidic pH. In contrast, polyacrylic acid and polyphosphate disperse kaolinite from pH 3 to 10.5, with strong dispersion effect observed at neutral and acidic pH. In the iron ore industry, selective fl occulation and reverse cationic fl otation, the most widely used flotation route, are both conducted at pH 10 to 10.5. The results of the present study show that, at such high pH, polyacrylic acid and polyphosphate are more effective dispersants of kaolinite, in comparison with sodium silicate.

In Copper Flash Smelting operation disturbances may lead into dust build-up in the gas train and off-gas handling system causing reduced heat recovery efficiency and process availability. Flue dust of a Copper Flash Smelting process heat recovery boiler has been characterized and its thermal conductivity and diffusivity have been determined. Dust accretions consist of several layers possessing varying particle sizes, densities, and thermal properties, with the binding phase usually being sulphate. All the dusts can be regarded as effective thermal insulators with thermal conductivity values of less than 2 W/mK and thermal diffusivity values of less than 0.005 cm2/s. Porosity can be regarded as a fairly good indicator of the thermal transport efficiency of these types of materials, but the material microstructure must also be considered. The results can be used in the dimensioning of metallurgical heat recovery boilers and they also provide accurate input data for process models.

The gold dissolution in sulfuric acid media during industrial oxidative leaching test of sulfide gold-copper flotation concentrates has been achieved. The reason for this was using technological water containing thiocyanates and cyanides, which can dissolve gold under these conditions. The carbon in column (CIC) process for gold recovery from these solutions was proposed. However, significant amounts of copper and iron were adsorbed onto the carbon during CIC technology industrial tests. This resulted in a decrease of the gold content in the loaded carbon up to 0.5 kg/t. Further development of the technology was conducted by optimisation of gold and impurities stripping and implementation of carbon reactivation. It was shown, that the copper extraction from the loaded carbon during cyanide treatment was about 95%. The copper content in the stripped carbon after cyanide treatment was 1.76 kg/t. The gold recovery during high-pressure elution by caustic solution was 98%. The hydrochloric acidic treatment with thermal pre-treatment (reactivation) for removing iron and calcium from gold-free carbon was proposed. In this case, the iron and calcium extractions from carbon were 40-45 and 50-55% respectively. These tests showed that for carbon recycling the sequence operations of ‘cyanide treatment, gold elution, thermal pre-treatment, hydrochloric acidic treatment’ can be used. The traditional vertical transportation systems deliver both gangue and useful mineral. The extraction of the desired minerals requires the construction of mineral processing and waste management plants, driving production costs, and often creating a negative environmental impact. The proposed technology is an integration of mineral processing within the transportation system. The mined rock is crushed and then loaded into a vertical lifting system filled with heavy media, with an intermediate density between the mineral and the waste rock. Driven by gravity separation, the desired mineral floats to the earth's surface, while the waste sinks. Delivered minerals and sunk waste is extracted from the heavy media and is then regenerated to a dry state. The useful mineral should be suitable for further use, and the waste used for backfilling. Remained residues of the heavy media may be recycled and reused in the vertical transportation system. Trials of the proposed process in a pilot format have confirmed economic and environmental advantages over traditional methods of transportation and mineral processing technologies. The close-multiple coal seam is an important component of China’s coal resources and plays a key role in total coal reserves. However, the overburden movement in the mining process of close-multiple coal seams is usually extensive, which is seriously affected by overmining. It is therefore essential to study the mechanism of roof breakage, the relationship between the shield and the surrounding rock, and the mechanism of overburden movement to ensure the safe operation and the efficient exploitation of close-multiple coal seams. This work first proposes a technical route for intelligent ground control. Second, the principle of cooperative control between the shield and overburden roof is revealed, and the shield support capacity calculation method is summarized. Third, the quantitative criterion for disturbance degree of key stratum (KSDD) is proposed based on the key strata theory. Finally, several intelligent evaluation and analysis systems have been developed in terms of overburden breakage and shield support capacity, multi-information analysis of ground control, and disturbance degree of overburden. The research results may provide an essential reference for the development of intelligent ground control in the mining process of close-multiple coal seams

Ore mineralogy defines the properties during processing and metal extraction. Fast and frequent monitoring of the mineral content and related process parameters brings value to the mining operation and material processing. Decreasing ore qualities and increasing prices for raw materials require a better control of processed ore and a more efficient use of energy. Traditionally quality control in mining industries has relied on time consuming wet chemistry or the analysis of the elemental composition. The mineralogy that defines the physical properties is often monitored infrequently, if at all. The use of highspeed detectors has turned X-ray diffraction (XRD) into an important tool for fast and accurate process control. XRD data and their interpretation make the difference in the identification of minerals, in describing their distribution in ore bodies and in their beneficiation during processing. The use of statistical techniques such as Partial Least-Squares Regression (PLSR) or Principal Component Analysis (PCA) on XRD raw data has been successfully trialled to determine raw materials and processed ores, in addition to well established methods for mineral identification and quantification. PLSR can be used to correlate process parameters directly from the XRD pattern without investigating the mineral content. Hidden information present in the XRD pattern but not determined with traditional methods can be used to improve the characterisation of the analysed materials. The practical use for the direct determination of process relevant parameters during exploration and ore beneficiation will be illustrated in several case studies from mining and ore processing. Os Sistemas de Nível 2 de Otimização da ArcelorMittal Tubarão impactam diretamente no processo produtivo (Qualidade, Produtividade, Produção), sendo que parte considerável destes sistemas são executados em plataforma legada de hardware (Alpha Digital). Em 2011/2012, o fim do ciclo de vida da Plataforma Alpha (Open VMS) anunciado pela HP trouxe este tópico para um lugar de destaque na matriz de risco da Engenharia de Automação. A principal estratégia é a migração para novas plataformas, porém associa-se a esta opção um custo e tempo elevado, principalmente se tratando de sistemas de alta complexidade e disponibilidade. A gestão de um estoque de sobressalentes também se torna cada vez mais difícil devido à escassez destes equipamentos no mercado global. Considerando estes fatores, a busca de soluções alternativas de curto prazo se fez necessária. Uma tecnologia de emulação e virtualização de plataforma foi validada e um projeto piloto implantado no sistema responsável pela otimização do processo de reaquecimento de placas do Laminador de Tiras a Quente. O uso desta tecnologia promoveu uma portabilidade direta do sistema para um hardware padrão de mercado (Intel x64), em curto prazo e sem impactos operacionais, podendo ser disseminada para outros sistemas, garantindo um pulmão para futuras migrações.

O trabalho consiste na avaliação das Tensões Residuais através da técnica dos Furos-Cegos. O componente em estudo consiste em chapas de Aço A36 aplicadas para compor a estrutura de prensas hidraulicas. Com auxílio do software Solid Works versão 2013, foi realizado a simulação do estado de tensões sofridos pelas chapas quando a prensa hidraulica encontra-se em trabalho, determinando assim o seu fator de segurança. Em seguida, pelo método da aproximação sucessiva, foi adicionado furos-cegos ou furos passantes com diâmetros variados ao longo da geometria das chapas a fim de verificar o comportamento dos estados de tensões. Portanto, através da aplicação de furos-cegos nas chapas, foi possível identificar o diâmetro e posição ideal que permitiu um ganho significativo no fator de segurança das chapas, permitindo assim, reduzir o número de chapas no processo impactando diretamente nos custos e no tempo de fabricação do equipamento.

The ZA-27 zinc base alloy was poured into cylindrical moulds and solidified under different conditions ie normal freezing and unidirectional freezing. In addition a cylindrical ingot with rheocast material was obtained by stopping the stirring action and, at a specific solid fraction, gravity casting it into a graphite mould. It was observed that the material obtained under normal freezing conditions is likely to present both segregation and inverted pipe. In contrast, the unidirectional solidified and the rheocast cylinders showed the absence of inverted pipe. The segregation pattern was quite irregular in the rheocast ingot while such segregation was more uniform in the unidirectional solidified cylinder. By virtue of these observations, the inverted pipe formation may be ascribed to the interdendritic flow, while the irregular segregation pattern in the rheocast ingot may be attributed to an irregular distribution of the liquid and solid fraction along such a cylinder.

O colamento de aço no molde (sticker) é uma anomalia de processo de lingotamento, que quando não detectado pelos modelos de prevenção de sticker, pode gerar breakout, o que significa perdas de produção significativas e aumentos de custos de manutenção para recuperação de componentes de segmentos e moldes, além dos riscos de segurança durante a limpeza do aço dentro da máquina e reprocessamento das placas para eliminação de defeitos superficiais. Outro aspecto a ser considerado é a ocorrência de falso alarme de sticker que também gera custos adicionais de produção, aumento de defeitos superficiais nas placas e powder slivers em laminado a quente devido a redução brusca da velocidade de lingotamento. Visando reduzir as ocorrências citadas acima e otimizar o processo de lingotamento, um novo sistema de detecção de sticker foi implantando, em AM Tubarão, nas 03 máquinas de lingotamento contínuo de placas, com uma configuração diferente da que que habitualmente é encontrada no mercado. O sistema é baseado em dois eixos: uma imagem termográfica do molde e um sistema de cálculo bastante avançado. Este trabalho apresenta os resultados deste processo e os ganhos obtidos quanto à redução de alarme falso de sticker.

This article introduces the Danieli Total Asset Management System, which involves 360 degrees service methods and equipment. Danieli Condition Monitoring System and Danieli Torque Monitoring System are fundamental to evaluate the conditions of the working components in heavy duty transmissions. The first one monitors the vibrations and the lubrication fluid conditions with the purpose to identify the presence of malfunctions, by detecting any variation of the signals from the standard values. The second one monitors the transmitted torque for each spindle and gearbox, with the aim of detecting any anomaly in torque distribution and magnitude, and evaluating the residual life of the mechanical parts, on the base of a dedicated fatigue damage algorithm. All these features are useful in avoiding serious damages to machines, facilities and people, but allow also planning the maintenance and overhaul activities with efficiency, in order to achieve the best plant availability and reliability. The data analysis is made by the IntelliCMS software, which interfaces with plant and Danieli operators and includes the possibility to cooperate by remote connections, simplifying service activities and support. All these features allow providing new full service programs, where the client is totally supported in maintenance, overhauls and substitutions. This is the best way to ensure the most efficient, high quality and reliable after sales assistance.

Over the last few years the mining industry has continuously been facing increases in capital and operating costs for new projects; plant expansions and also significant increases in the operating costs of existing plants. To counteract such trend the industry is seeking technologies such as the Vertimill as an option to lower the operating costs of grinding circuits. The benefits the Vertimill offers in terms of lower energy consumption and lower media consumption are well established and documented; such benefits can significantly improve the viability of a new project, plant expansions or upgrading grinding mills that need to be replaced. The paper briefly describes the operation of the Vertimill, recent regrind applications in processing Iron ores where the impact of lower energy and grinding media consumption is very significant because of the large tonnages involved, and also applications as a tertiary and secondary grinding stages of grinding circuits. The paper also highlight the expected role the Vertimill can play in secondary applications and the expected impact on the overall economics of the project.
