"Coal—mine explosions are accidents that can and should be prevented. In former years hundreds of lives were lost each year in the United States as a result of such explosions, but after 1932 the numerous precautionary measures adopted had reduced their frequency and severity 75 percent or more until in 1940 several very disastrous explosions marred the good record. Unfortunately, both the number and severity of explosions seem to be tending to increase compared with the relatively good achievement from 1933 to 1940. The requisites for an explosion are ever present in all soft-coal and many hard-coal mines. A certain combination of circumstances, such as a flame or an arc in a cloud of dust or in a body of gas or both may start an explosion at any time. The fact that the frequency and severity of explosions were lowered for 6 or 7 years is no guarantee that such freedom from explosions will continue, as the bad record of 1940 has shown, and underground workers should feel honor bound to exercise the utmost care so that they will not help to bring about the circumstances that will cause an explosion.Although mine operators bear the main responsibility for preventing explosions, miners can do many things to help. As about 9 out of 10 explosions begin at a working face, it is largely within the power of workers to prevent them. All miners should do their part willingly and should not defend a fellow workman from punishment, even from discharge, for disobeying necessary rules, whose disregard may cause the death not only of the safety-rule breaker but also of many of his coworkers.When a miner is careless and is injured some other way than by an explosion he may be the only one to suffer, but if his carelessness causes an explosion he not only endangers his own life but also that of every other man in the mine and possibly the lives of persons outside the mine.Experiments have shown that ignition of as small a quantity as 150 cubic feet of an explosive mixture of methane and air under certain circumstances can start an explosion that will traverse an entire mine. Thus, ignition of an explosive mixture of gas 1 foot down from the roof and 13 feet back from the face of a 12-foot entry might cause a widespread explosion if the right quantity and kind of dust were present. Many persons have ignited much larger quantities of gas without being killed, but they survived only because dust, confinement, and other conditions were not exactly ""right."""

"Bubble size in flotation is strongly influenced by frother concentration in the pulp liquor. There is no accepted method of judging the dosage and thus how effectively frother is being distributed to control bubble size is not known. This will hamper certain plant test work where constant bubble size (e.g., when comparing reagents) is implicit. Bubble size is not easy to measure in plant and gas holdup is suggested as a surrogate in the development of a proposed “meter” to estimate frother concentration. The meter is calibrated to enable frother concentration to be estimated on samples drawn from any location in the flotation circuit. The meter and its calibration are described.As general background the action of frothers in reducing bubble size by retarding coalescence is discussed and the bubble generation systems for which the effect will be important are considered.INTRODUCTIONBubble size is an important variable in flotation. The flotation rate constant k has been related to mean bubble size Db by k % Db -n with n ranging up to 2 (Ahmed and Jameson, 1989) and even 3 (Yoon, 1993). Recent work has introduced k % Sb, the bubble surface area flux, given by Sb = 6 Jg / Db (where Jg is the superficial gas velocity or volumetric gas rate per unit cell cross-sectional area), i.e., n = 1 (Gorain et al., 1998). Regardless of the exact value of n, the significance of bubble size in flotation remains. In many plant trials it will be implicit that bubble size has not changed and attention will focus on other process variables. The measurement of bubble size, or a surrogate, would be useful addition to any test work.The size of the bubbles is influenced by several variables, gas rate, gas injection system (e.g., impeller design and rotation speed in a mechanical cell) and pulp composition (chemicals added, percent solids), but the most important is frother concentration (Harris, 1976). The frother functions by retarding coalescence (see appendix), which acts to preserve the small bubbles generated in the pulp (and permits a stable froth to form on top of the pulp). The measurement of bubble size is thus related to measuring frother concentration. The distribution of frother and whether sufficient (to control bubble size) is reaching the intended parts of the circuit then become important considerations. At present there is no simple way to judge frother concentration in a plant. In this communication we introduce a possible methodology, a “frother concentration meter”."

INTRODUCTION The results of the Japanese dissective investigations have [l-4] transformed our understanding of how the blast furnace operates. These studies revealed an internal structure of the furnace burden with five main zones, as illustrated in Figure 1. In the granular zone the charged material retains its structure whereas in the cohesive zone the iron ore particles are at advanced stages of reduction and form a semi-molten mass with a relatively high flow resistance. In the active coke zone molten iron and slag flow through a matrix of loosely packed coke. The raceway is a relatively small void space generated by displacement of coke due to the hot blast momentum, whilst the hearth is packed with coke, slag and molten iron. [ ] It is now well appreciated that furnace control is largely achieved and maintained by using the burden charge distribution to determine the gas glow distribution within the furnace and, hence, the shape and extent of the cohesive zone. In fact, Wakayama et a1 [5] of Nippon Steel Corporation state that optimum furnace operation is synonomous with the formation of a desirable cohesive zone shape, which in turn is almost solely determined by the burden charge distribution and its mechanical properties [6]. Much of the development work on operating furnaces since the dissective investigations has been oriented towards the identification of external furnace measures which reliably predict the shape of the cohesive zone. Currently the most popular measures are top gas temperature, velocity and CO/CO, ratio profiles [5]. More recently pressure distributions as evaluated from a series of wall measurements down the height of the furnace are also being utilised [7] to identify the position and shape of the cohesive zone. A great deal of emphasis has been placed upon achieving a consistent quality in the burden charge materials, establishing a suitable set of operating conditions and only making changes when forced to, ie., the operation for some reason moves outside a desired operating range or the production requirements change. Operational control schemes based upon this philosophy (eg., Kawasaki's GO-STOP system [8]) have been remarkably successful at achieving both high production rates and relatively low fuel costs. Mathematical models have long been used as tools to assist in the analysis of the blast furnace process. Although, the models have been useful in post-operative analysis and for identifying trends, etc., they have not proved reliable for detailed design criteria or as the basis for effective control schemes. "In ports, piled berths are designed and constructed for berthing of ships with a finite draught. Piles in a bridge foundation also have a large free stand above scoured level. The piles of these structures have to withstand large horizontal forces imparted by the impact of the approaching vessels or due to longitudinal and transverse action in a bridge. It is also imperative that these piles have to project out of the dredged / scoured bed. These piles are normally designed as slender compression members subjected to bending also. They are subjected to vertical load tests for assessing the soil resistance. Lateral load tests, as a rule, are also stipulated. IS and IRC codes stipulate a deflection criteria for lateral load test to arrive at the capacity. These tests are usually conducted on a working pile by jacking out two piles. At the time of the test, pile will be free headed. But in service, piles are fixed head. There is a large difference in deflections between a fixed head and a free headed pile. Besides, a free headed pile will be subjected to a much higher bending moment than the fixed head one. This will put the working test pile under risk of breaking during the test. The problem is analyzed with case studies. INTRODUCTION Vertical capacity of piles is assessed by static formulae. This formula is based on the soil properties obtained from random soil exploration and laboratory and in-situ testing. Since soil is not a homogeneous medium, properties can vary. The design parameters taken for computations may be different from the ones at the interface of the pile with the soil. The best way is to find out is by a load test. The code IRC:78-2014 has rightly stated that initial load test is part of the design process. This is true with the vertical load test. But there are certain problems with the purpose and inference of the lateral load test. In both the tests the criteria for acceptance is the quantum of movement of the point of application of the load. In the former, the movement is vertical and depends more on the compression of the soil than the compressive strain in concrete. But in the latter, this movement is partly on account of the flexural rigidity of the pile and partly due to the horizontal compressibility of the soil. The role of rigidity of the pile is more when compressibility of the soil is higher. Lateral load test is done by jacking one pile against another because it is difficult to get an independent horizontal reaction. Please see Fig.1 Photo."

FOREWORD By E. D. Gardner[$] THE present known petroleum reserves are limited, and unless important new fields are discovered the Nation will be dependent, in the not too distant future, upon imports or upon synthetic liquid fuels to supplement domestic petroleum supplies. As a national defense measure, it would appear desirable to develop a substitute source of liquid fuels within the borders of the country if new discoveries of petroleum should prove disappointing. Congress undoubtedly had this in mind when it passed the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act (78th Congress, approved April 5, 1944). The act directed the Bureau of Mines to construct and operate demonstration plants for producing synthetic liquid fuels from coal and oil shale, and from forestry and agricultural products. As a part of this program, the Bureau of Mines has built a demonstration plant at Anvil Points, near Rifle, Colo., for retorting the oil shale, and has developed a mine to supply the plant with oil shale. At the beginning of mining operations, the physical qualities of the oil shale, which would have a bearing upon the selection of mining methods and practices for exploiting the deposits, were largely unknown. A comprehensive mining-research program has been set up to determine the best methods and practices to follow to obtain the lowest overall practicable mining cost for producing the oil shale on a large scale. Unusually low mining costs will be necessary for shale oil to be produced commercially. Consideration now is being given to exploiting a series of flat-lying beds 70 ft thick by a room-and-pillar method of three benches with the advance heading at the top. This report is one of a series giving the results obtained in research on mining problems. INTRODUCTION The structure and physical qualities of the oil shale indicate that the 70-ft interval of the oil-shale measure can be safely mined in open stopes; studies indicate that this method would be the most economical one to use.1 As labor will be a major item of expense, the largest equipment that could be operated efficiently in the workings would be required to obtain the lowest practicable mining cost. It was therefore desirable to know the maximum safe span of unsupported rooms and the size of pillars necessary to support the overburden. This paper describes the work done at the Columbia School of Mines Barodynamic Laboratory in determining the maximum safe unsupported roof spans and the minimum safe pillar dimensions for the oil-shale mine at Rifle, Colo.

"Gold recovery gains in the order of one to two percent have been realized in 2009 due to changes in the operation of the grinding circuits at Barrick Gold Corporation’s Hemlo - Williams Mill. The initiative known as “split milling” involves milling low grade open pit ore in one grinding circuit and higher grade underground ore in the other grinding circuit under different conditions.The philosophy of split milling involves processing higher grade underground ore at a lower throughput rate and a finer grind while milling lower grade open pit ore at a higher throughput rate and a coarser grind. Bench scale tests showed that the recovery relationship for underground ore sources was much more grind sensitive than that of open pit ore. This relationship proved to hold in the plant. The gold recovery gain due to finer grinding of the higher grade ore is much greater than the recovery loss due to coarser grinding on the lower grade ore. Since the majority of gold is being recovered at a higher rate, this results in higher overall plant gold recovery when compared to the traditional operation philosophy of blending the ore sources.The challenges for achieving the maximum benefits of split milling were two fold; the need to increase throughput on the open pit ore milling circuit and a means of grinding finer on the underground circuit. The former was met with an increase in SAG (Semi-Autogenous Grinding) mill ball charge, a basic “drill to mill” blasting campaign and changes to the primary gyratory crusher. The latter was met with a reduced SAG mill ball charge and a higher milling density. The resulting benefits in additional gold recovered are in the order of $3-5 million per annum.INTRODUCTIONThe Williams Mill processes ore from three different ore sources, the David Bell Mine (DB), the Williams Underground Mine (WUG) and the Williams Open Pit (OP). All three ore sources are located within the Hemlo camp in Northwestern Ontario adjacent to the Trans-Canada Highway. The Williams Mill was built in the mid 1980’s at which time it was designed to process 3,000 dry metric tonnes per day through a 22’ SAG mill in series with a 16’ ball mill. In 1988 a Mill expansion doubled the mill capacity by adding a second identical grinding circuit. A photo of the current grinding circuit can be seen in Figure 1. Today the Williams Mill processes an average of 8,000 tonnes per day of which approximately 60% is from the Williams Open Pit."

The impact of surface coal mining on the geologic materials and ground water in different geologic settings is being investigated by the Illinois State. Geological Survey at three abandoned surface mines in Illinois. At a site near Ottawa in La Salle County, the overburden prior to mining consisted largely of pyritic shale; sand was the major component of the overburden and spoil at a mine near Coal City, Grundy County. Clays, lacustrine silts, and some shale and limestone were the dominant premining overburden materials at a mine near Harrisburg, in Saline County. Ground-water elevations at Coal City and Harrisburg are approximately at premining levels, whereas at Ottawa they are near the base of the spoil. Ground-water quality has deteriorated at all three sites, especially at Ottawa and Harrisburg.

"At the request of Philip S. Hoyt, the Eagle Mountain fluorspar deposits in section 35, block 68, Texas & Pacific Railroad Survey No. 9, were examined by an engineer3/ of the Bureau of Mines during March 1943: As a result of this examination; a preliminary program of trenching, sampling and core drilling by the Bureau of Mines was begun in. June 1943.4/ Eight deposits were explored.The Federal Geological Survey mapped the properties and furnished geologic information throughout the program, while the Texas .Bureau of Economic Geology6/ made preliminary maps that facilitated planning the exploratory work on section 35.The eight deposits explored by the Bureau of Mines are in block 68, Texas & Pacific Railroad Survey No. 9, Hudspeth County, Tex., approximately 7-1/2 miles south of. Hot Wells and 12-1/2 miles south of Allamoore, which is 10 miles west of Van Horn and 20 miles east of Gierra Blanco on U. S. Highway 80(fig. 1). A graded gravel road, built by the Public Roads Administration, leads from Hot Wells to the deposits in section 35, and there are unimproved roads, passable,by automobile, to all the other deposits.Carload shipments can be made to and from Hot Wells on the Southern Pacific Railroad, and complete railroad facilities are available at Allamoore on the Texas & Pacific Railroad.Van Horn and Sierra Blanca are the only local source of labor and. supplies. The prevailing wage for common labor is 60 cents an hour. Living accommodations are obtainable in Horn and Sierra Blanca.No electric power lines pass near the deposits. Diesel and gasoline motors are employed to furnish power for mining and milling operations.Two recently 'drilled water wells on section 35 furnish water for the mill. Other wells will be drilled if the present supply is inadequate for prolonged Peak operation.The properties lie in the foothills on the northeast side of the Eagle Mountains at 5,500 feet altitude. The Eagle Mountain Range rises sharply from a broad, flat valley known as Eagle Flat. Eagle Peak, the highest in the range, has an altitude of 7,510 feet. In the vicinity of the fluorspar deposits the topography is moderately reliefs ranging from 50 to 300 feet."

"In 2015, the estimated value of nonfuel mineral production in the United States decreased by 3 percent from that in 2014 (Table 1), mainly as a result of decreased metal and metallic mineral prices, especially iron ore, copper and precious metals. Lower metal prices were attributed to decreased consumption, especially in China and increased global inventories. Several U.S. metal mines were idled in 2015, including the only U.S. rare earths mine at Mountain Pass, CA. Downstream processors also were affected, with smelters and refiners either shutting down or idling production lines. Increases, however, took place in the value and quantity of production of industrial minerals, especially those used in the construction sector, including cement, construction sand and gravel and crushed stone. Trends in mineral-related sectors of the domestic economy, except for iron and steel manufacturing, aluminum manufacturing, coal mining and metals mining, all experienced growth (Table 2).Discussion of mine production is frequently segmented according to the type of materials produced within the broad categories of metals and industrial minerals (also known as nonmetallic minerals). Industrial minerals can be further subdivided as construction aggregates and other industrial minerals. Metals tend to have higher unit values but very low production quantities compared with those of industrial minerals, which have higher production quantities but are lower-valued materials, such as crushed stone or construction sand and gravel. Therefore, for discussion and analysis of the performance of the nonfuel minerals industry, the value of production is used rather than the tonnage produced. Tonnages of construction aggregates are orders of magnitude larger than those for most other mineral commodities thus making direct comparisons based on weight meaningless (Fig. 1).Mineral industry performanceThe estimated value of domestic nonfuel mineral production, including metals ($26.6 billion) and industrial minerals ($51.7 billion), in 2015 declined to a total of $78.3 billion, from $80.8 billion in 2014 (Table 1). However, as shown in Fig. 2, minerals remained fundamental to the United States economy, contributing to the real gross domestic product at several levels, including mining, processing and manufacturing finished products. Net exports of mineral raw materials and old scrap were $14.4 billion. Domestic raw materials, along with domestically recycled materials, were used to produce mineral materials worth $630 billion. These mineral materials, including aluminum, brick, copper, fertilizers and steel, and net imports of processed materials (worth about $32 billion) were, in turn, consumed by downstream industries with a value added to the gross domestic product estimated to be $2,490 billion."

Pima Mining Company has recently completed their expansion tripling the plant capacity to 18,000 tons per day and now is in the process off expanding to 30,000 tons per day with completion scheduled for the summer of 1967. This paper briefly discusses the additions to the mining department and support areas with a more detailed report on the complete new crushing plant and additions to the concentrator. The crushing plant includes a 54-inch gyratory crusher, three 7-foot standard and seven 7-foot short head crushers along with necessary screens, feeders, and conveyor belts to produce a minus 1/2-inch rod mill feed. The concentrator consists of ten milling sections, each containing one 10-foot by 16-foot rod and two 10.5-foot by 13-foot ball mills, classification is done with cyclones. Pulp from each section is floated in 50 cells of 66-inch Fagergren flotation machines to produce a rougher concentrate which is cleaned in six stages of Denver cleaners to produce a final concentrate The various mill products are thickened with disposal made in conventional manner. Plant instrumentation is discussed in the paper.

From a colloidal science point of view (Schulze 1984, Nguyen & Schulze, 2004) five micro-processes are responsible for successful particle-bubble formation: the approaching of the particle to the liquid-air interface, the thinning and rupture of the intervening liquid film, the expansion of the three phase contact perimeter, the generation of sufficient large capillary force to stabilise the aggregates and the transport process of particles into and within the froth layer. Flotation reagents influence mainly the thinning and rupture of the intervening liquid film between particles and air bubbles, the expansion of the three phase contact after the rupture of the liquid film and the stability of the aggregates against external destruction forces in the flow field. But it exist also a non-negligible influence on the approaching of particles to the bubble surface during the encounter process and on their passing over into the froth layer and the froth stability.

During incineration of municipal solid waste (MSW), various environmentally harmful elements and heavy metals are liberated partly into bottom ash, and partly carried away with the off-gases and subsequently trapped in fly-ash. If these waste incineration residues are not properly processed and immobilized, it can lead to secondary environmental pollution to the air, soil and water. The stricter environmental regulations require a higher immobilization efficiency of the waste incineration residues, which is the main objective of the present cooperation research. Within the present project, a systematic scientific research on various MSWI residues has been carried out, including sampling, low or high temperature processing and leaching tests. In the present paper, the major results have been summarized. The research results reveal that through appropriate combined pre-processing and high temperature vitrification, the bottom ash and fly ash can be efficiently stabilized. The results achieved provide a valuable alternative route to treat the solid residues from incinerators, and to make efficient recycling and safe utilization possible.

This paper reports on research examining disclosures from mining companies regarding their water usage in the Macquarie and Lachlan catchment areas, both parts of the Murray-Darling Basin in New South Wales, Australia. The objective of the research was to assess whether this disclosure is sufficient to allow communities to determine whether mining companies are complying with mining conditions of consent and abiding by the requirements of their water licencing agreements. These requirements are then compared to the water reporting requirements of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the Water Accounting Framework for the Minerals Industry (WAFMI). Communities are concerned about whether the mining industry?s use of water will have impacts on their livelihoods and lifestyle and thus require information concerning the quantity of water that will be extracted, how much water will be left for other stakeholders and whether the mining will affect water quality. This is an archival study. It has involved examining relevant publically available information released by mining companies and government regulators and determining if this is sufficient to meet the needs of the local communities. Additionally, it has involved looking at information indirectly provided by mining companies, via the use of intermediaries. Further, information availability concerning basic water accounting and regulatory breeches and whether such information is available at the mine site level has been considered. It is found that while NSW legislation places very little reporting requirements on mining companies, the development consent conditions for new projects and extensions to existing projects are quite significant and should be sufficient to meet the needs of local catchment residents though such information is not always easily accessible for the layperson.

Introduction The writer was instructed to visit the Chibougamau region during the field season of 1927 and report on the mineral discoveries that had been made there since 1911. lt was deemed advisable to obtain detailed information regarding the rocks underlying the area in the vicinity of these recent discoveries. Accordingly an area 60 square miles in extent was mapped. The outcrops were studied along the water courses and along bush traverses spaced at half-mile intervals between these water courses. The completion of the rest of the summer's programme allowed only three weeks for this work. lt is from this small, mapped area, and this necessarily cursory survey, that the material for this paper was obtained. Location And Means Of Access The name Chibougamau district is applied loosely to an ill-defined area of about 1,000 square miles lying mostly north and west of Chibougamau lake in the Province of Quebec. The lake is approximately half way between lake St. John and James bay. It lies 150 miles north of the Canadian National railway and 40 miles south of Mistassini?lake.

The South West Rail Link (SWRL) project involved construction of a rail line to service new residential areas in south-west Sydney. The 11 km rail line is conveyed through a short tunnel at shallow depth where it crosses beneath the eight lanes of the Hume Highway. The underpass location is one of the most heavily trafficked within Sydney’s motorway network.The New South Wales Roads and Maritime Services (Roads and Maritime), as the owner of the highway asset, had the responsibility of managing the risks to the highway and traffic associated with the tunnelling project from the pretender stage through to completion. This paper considers the primary risks and mitigation measures employed, including geotechnical investigation, and development of appropriate construction constraints and concept design of an extensive real-time survey system to monitor pavement deformation during the tunnel works.The geology comprises fresh Minchinbury Sandstone in the tunnel invert and side walls, and variably weathered Bringelly Shale in the haunch and crown. Few tunnels have been excavated in these rock types in Sydney, and there is little information relating to the in situ stresses and stress-relief deformations in these materials.During tunnel construction the monitoring data indicated unexpected surface heave of up to about 24 mm. A multiparametric back-analysis of the deformation data is presented, which provides information on the deformation mechanisms and key geotechnical parameters, including rock mass modulus and in situ stresses.The approaches and methodologies developed for the SWRL underpass were effective in maintaining the safe operation and traffic capacity of the highway throughout the construction period, and the analysis of the monitoring data provides a useful reference for similar future projects, or projects constructed in similar ground conditions.CITATION:Clarke, S J and Walker, C S, 2014. Ladies and Gentlemen: It is a distinct pleasure and honor to appear before you representing the railway industry as I do, but there is a much closer personal relationship. I am a graduate Mining Engineer and worked in the coal industry for 15 years prior to becoming a railroader only 4 ½ years ago. I have been a member of AIME most of my adult working life and am currently active in the Washington, D. C. Section. While having been in the railway industry only a short time, I have become involved during the recent period of innovation and development of the new railroad technique known as unit train service. I have had the privilege of helping to work out a number of unit train movements to both electric utility companies and to a major steel concern, handling coal from mines on the Southern Railway to the consuming plants. On Southern, our unit trains are all of what I shall describe as shuttle train operations whereas within the railroad industry today several types of service are characterized as unit train service and many don't offer comparable efficiencies.

The solvent extraction (SX) processes of the three pressure acid leach (PAL) nickel plants in Western Australia have been reviewed. The use of intermediate precipitation, solids/liquid separation and re-leach in the three W A nickel plants make these processes complicated and costly in capital and ?operation. The research work carried out by the SX group at the AJ Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy I CSIRO Minerals has led to the development of direct solvent extraction (DSX) processes to recover and purify nickel and cobalt from leach solutions. The simplicity of the process flowsheets and the expected savings in capital and operating costs are the major advantages of the new DSX processes over the reviewed processes. By using a new synergistic organic system in semi-continuous tests with a pilot plant leach solution (after iron precipitation) from BHP-BiIliton Stainless Steel Materials, the metal values (Ni and Co) together with zinc and copper were separated from the major impurities (Mn, Mg and Ca, together with Cl) in the first SX circuit. The co-extracted manganese, magnesium and' calcium were easily scrubbed out. After stripping, the metal values (Ni and Co) together with zinc and copper were concentrated, resulting in a much smaller second SX circuit and equipment in the down stream processes. The extraction and stripping kinetics of the metals with the new synergistic organic solution were very fast. The extraction and stripping almost reached steady state within 0.5 minutes. Semi-continuous test work with a synthetic leach solution, a cobalt pilot plant leach solution from Peko Rehabilitation Project Pty Ltd and a synthetic solution to simulate a concentrated laterite leach solution from BHP-Billiton Stainless Steel Materials showed that manganese, calcium, copper and zinc can be effectively and efficiently separated from nickel, cobalt and magnesium by extraction, scrubbing and stripping. This led to the development of another DSX process using D2EHPA to recover nickel and cobalt from leach solutions.

This paper is a review of technological progress in mining geophysics during the past decade. This has been the most significant period in the history of mining geophysics. Among the already existing; techniques, instruments for ground -magnetic and electromagnetic prospecting, were developed that are more, portable and faster to operate. Induced polarization equipment came into widespread use. Airborne instruments of various types became available and were used to survey large areas. Drillhole instruments were developed and have had some use, and it is to be hoped will be used to a greater extent in the future. Two revolutionary new methods, the AFMAG and INPUT, were developed. The wisdom of attempting to cover such a broad field in a single paper might be questioned. There is the inevitable problem that each topic must be discussed very briefly. However, while papers describing individual instruments have appeared, many have yet to be described in the technical literature. The evolution of the ground magnetometer and electromagnetic instruments has not been discussed. It is only recently that a review article has appeared on airborne EM. The existence of review literature on some topics has meant that they are given less emphasis in this review than those topics inadequately covered. It will also be observed that stress is laid on "chose instruments that are generally available to the mining industry rather than those developed by individual exploration companies for their own use.

INTRODUCTION Eighteen years ago about half a dozen experienced prospectors moved from northern Ontario to northwest Manitoba to prospect 'greenstone' areas shown on geological maps of .parts of northern Manitoba prepared by J. B. Tyrrell, D. B. Dowling, and Wm. Mclnnes. Gold-bearing quartz was soon discovered by these men in this new field, and in succeeding years many more prospectors entered the district. A number of the pioneers are still prospecting, and since 1913 mineral deposits have been discovered each year in widely separated areas of the large district extending 150 miles eastward from the 102nd meridian and 60 miles north of latitude 54°30'. The majority of the discoveries, however, have been made near Schist, Elbow, Wekusko, and Kississing lakes. One hundred or more mineral occurrences of some merit are known, the main types being sulphide replacement bodies containing nickel-copper or copper-zinc and gold-bearing quartz veins. Some underground exploration or diamond drilling has been completed on 25 or more of the prospects. Up to the present, three ore-bodies, namely, Flin Flon, Sherritt-Gordon, and Mandy, have been proved. Of these, Flin Flon, the largest, is estimated to contain from 16,000,000 o 19,000,000 tons of copper-zinc ore carrying some gold, silver, and lead. Next in importance in regard to tonnage is Sherritt-Gordon, with a calculated reserve of nearly 5,250,000 tons of copper-zinc ore carrying less than $1.00 combined gold and silver.

Although the economically important uranium minerals are difficult to recognize under the ore microscope, they can be identified by a combination of qualitative and quantitative techniques. Useful quantitative techniques include indentation hardness, percent reflectance, spectral reflectance curves, and color coordinates. The latter two properties are especially distinctive for the primary urahlferous minerals uraninite, coffinite, brannerlte, and davidite. Together with the quantitative properties of indentation hardness and reflectance, the character and color of internal reflections are distinctive for many of the secondary uranium minerals. Ore microscopic techniques also provide an excellent means for determining the intergrowths of these minerals with other ore and gangue minerals. Such intergrowths are important to an understanding of the genesis of uranium deposits, and they may be important to uranium extractions.
