High pressure grinding rolls have been demonstrated by numerous researchers, and at a number of commercial installa­tions to be power efficient comminution devices. They have become almost "standard equipment" in the grinding of cement clinker. However, the technology has been relatively slow to catch on in the mineral processing industry. Part of this may be due to the fact that this relatively expensive machine has not been incorporated into the plant flowsheet so as to fully exploit its power efficiency, and therefore realise the maximum economic benefit. This paper describes the results of a pilot scale test program designed to evaluate the performance of the device with the aim of developing a circuit configuration that better exploits the inherent power efficiency of the machine. The results of the test program clearly show that power savings of about 50% over conventional technology are achievable when the machine is made to produce the final product grind size.

In her wonderful book, 'The Guns of August', historian Barbara Tuchman tells us that the French war plan for 1914 was dedicated entirely to an offensive strategy, not a defensive one. Plan 17, as it was called, concentrated everything on a French advance to the Rhine, leaving the French left virtually unguarded. This strategy could only be justified by the fixed belief that the Germans could not deploy sufficient manpower to extend their invasion around through western Belgium and the low provinces; and this in turn was based on the belief that the Germans would never use reserve troops in the front line. Al evidence to the contrary was ignored. But when the war came, the Germans followed Count Von Schlieffen's plan; they did use reserves in the front line and they did come the long way around on the west. The result- as you know-was a protracted war, with fearful consequences for the rest of our century.

The move toward partial pillar extraction versus full pillar extraction has necessitated a new approach to underground section stability. When pillars are mined too small to support the weight of the overburden, they will, in some cases, remain stable for a considerable period; in other cases, they will collapse unexpectedly and violently. There is no discernable difference between the pillar safety factors of the failed and stable cases. The explanation lies in the characteristics of the overburden layers. A method is proposed that recognizes the overburden characteristics in the evaluation of stability. Two stability factors are calculated: one for the pillars, the other for the overburden. Using this method, it is possible to make use of the bridging capabilities of overburden layers to prevent pillar collapse. It is possible to scientifically design partial pillar extraction layouts that will be safe. Using energy considerations, it is also possible to prevent violent failure of pillars.

The potash review arrived too late to appear in the June issue. Potash is a general term that includes several water soluble potassium salts: potassium chloride (muriate of potash), potassium sulfate (sulfate of potash), potassium magnesium sulfate (sulfate of potash-magnesia), potassium nitrate (niter) and sometimes potassium carbonate. Potassium carbonate was the original potash when it was leached from wood ashes and dried in large, cast iron pots to black-to-gray crystals (ash) to form "pot ash." "Pearlash" was potash roasted to white crystals. In modern terminology, the great preponderance of "potash" is the mined forms. It is estimated that 95% of the potash mined around the world is used as fertilizer. In 1840, Justus von Liebig demonstrated to the scientific community the importance of potassium to the growth of plants. But there was no low-priced source of potash available at that time. "In their paper, Marcotte and Boucher (2001) cast some new light on the old problem of 2D estimation of vein-type deposits with thickness and grade of intercepts. Using a theoretical approach, some extensive simulation experiments and the Walker Lake data, they show that the direct approach (interpolation of grade at points on a regular grid) gives better estimates of the true grade at those points than the indirect approach (interpolation of grade x thickness or accumulation and interpolation of thickness) when there is some positive correlation between grade and thickness and that this better performance increases with the correlation of grade and thickness as well as the variability of both variables.We would like to bring some reservations to that conclusion by showing that even if direct point grade estimates are better than indirect ones, it is not necessarily true for block estimates and in particular for the estimated grade of the whole orebody itself."

Moultrop, of the Edison Electric Illum-inating Co., Boston, member of American Society of Mechanical Engin-eers and American Institute of Electrical Engineers. The Chamber of Commerce of the United States was formed in 1912 and now consists of more than 1100 organizations in every state of the union, in the out-lying possessions, and of all the principal American chambers of commerce abroad. One of the chief aims is to obtain the best business thought on national questions that concern business. Corrosion protection properties of the hybrid organo-silicate coatings on aluminum substrate can be significantly improved by means of encapsulation of organic corrosion inhibitors within the coating material. In order to achieve sustained release of corrosion inhibitor and long-term corrosion protection, a secondary chemical equilibrium of either ion-exchange interaction with the coating matrix or cyclodextrin-assisted molecular encapsulation of the inhibitor has been employed. Several organic corrosion inhibitors, such as mercaptobenzothiazole, mercaptobenzimidazole, mercaptobenzimi¬dazolesulfonate, and thiosalicylic acid have been examined by a group of electrochemical methods including potentiodynamic scan, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and scanning vibrating electrode technique. It has been found that the formulations that contain ß-cyclodextrin demonstrate superior corrosion protection capabilities as the complexation equilibrium results in a continuing delivery of inhibitor to corrosion sites. The approach is considered a promising way for active corrosion protection of high-strength aluminum alloys when integrity of barrier coating is compromised.

The scope and salient features of a general risk-analysis model for the main types of new mining ventures are covered in brief outline. The following special features and their effects on the investment criteria are discussed: - various criteria for viability, - the maximum shortfall of funds, - correlations between the grades of up to five ore constituents and between the corresponding product prices. differential inflation and escalation rates for costs and prices, - the estimation, if relevant, of a pay limit based either on the major product only, or on the two major products jointly, - the likely recovery grades of all the products to be obtained when the ore-body is mined to any such pay limit. - an option to take account of the effect on the pay limit of any negative taxation on marginal ore, - investment analyses in current and real terms for individual groups of investors subscribing for equity and any loan capital on differential terms.

This presentation addresses the changing regulatory climate towards aluminum dross and salt cake in Europe and in the United States. Although sporadic, the trend in the U.S. continues to be away from command-and-control regulation of these materials. This trend began in the early 1980s when the Environmental Protection Agency was successfully sued in court and prevented from classifying dross as a hazardous material. The situation in Europe is different. Because of Council Directive 96/61/EC from the European Commission, European Union member countries have all passed legislation that will essentially cause all salt cake and drosses to be reprocessed. The implementation date of the legislation varies from country to country: from 2001 in the United Kingdom to 2007 in Germany, France, Austria, Italy, and Spain. The European aluminum industry is urging the EC to use the approach adopted by the U.S. EPA, which declassifies the majority of aluminum drosses and salt cakes.

If you missed the 100th Anniversary of AIME in New York this year, you are missing the journey. There are not enough superlatives to describe the event. Especially since New York is "known to have it all." An Indefinable Plus There was a little something different at this meeting. I cannot explain what, but there seemed to be more of everything. There were more wives there this year-what a pleasure to see all the lovely women mingling through the conference- which was reflected through our own attire and mannerisms. In fact, everyone looked so great, we checked to see if it really was a convention of miners. You wives keep coming to all of the events, because so much is added by your presence.

In direct reduction processes for iron and steel making, significant amounts of Fe-C alloy droplets are generated and these remain suspended in relatively low FeO (around 5%) containing slags. Earlier workers have found that when the FeO content in the slag is <5%, the decarburization reaction becomes extremely slow (virtually ceases to occur) even though the alloy droplet contains a significant amount of carbons (2-3%). Understanding this rate controlling kinetic phenomena is crucial to designing an&apos; optimum direct steel making process. We studied decarburization of Fe-C particles by low FeO (<5%) containing CaO-SiO2A12O3 slags and found that by putting both the droplet and the slag in direct contact with an inert electronically conductive member that extends deep inside the slag bulk were able to quickly and completely decarburize the droplets. A detailed description and an explanation of the process will be presented.

The Hikoshima smelter carried out an expansion project in 1997 and increased its production from 59,200 t/y to 71,000 t/y. The leaching process and the casting process had production capacities of 84,000 t/y, but because of the electric power situation in Japan, the production capacity in the electrolysis process was limited to 59,200 t/y to justify the production cost. Electrolysis was the bottle neck of the plant. In order to eliminate a part of this bottle neck, and considering the electric power situation in Japan, a way to increase the production during the time when the electric power rate is low was sought. In practice, we increased the number of cells by 36, and further improved the operation procedures in the cellhouse. For example, we improved the working efficiency of the cells, improved the productivity during the night time, decreased the unit power consumption and improved labor productivity. Accordingly, this paper describes the recent operations at the Hikoshima plant.

The time domain during which an explosive detonates and causes rock to fragment and displace is on the order of tens of milliseconds. Because of this, the dynamic processes that occur during this time frame often become a source of confusion when trying to analyze the performance of explosive products in decked blast designs. As an illustration, the authors have experimentally examined explosives malfunction in decked blasts through state-of-the-art measurement techniques. The interaction of explosive products and blast geometry was examined in detail using the analysis of a series of decked blastholes. Explosive and initiator malfunction in decked blasts is often considered to be entirely the result of insufficient inert decking material, however, it is shown that rock properties and dynamic burden conditions may have a significant impact on decking performance. The successful application of deck-blasting technique for control of ground vibration amplitude relies on an understanding of the true dynamic performance of the blasthole.

This report covers a study of three different methods for drying ultrafine coals by sound waves. Ultrafine material is classified as coal which passes through a 100-mesh sieve. During the investigations, it was found that the addition of acoustic radiation to the drying of ultrafine coal is effective in increasing the rate of drying; the effect of acoustic radiation to improve drying decreases with an increase in the temperature of the system; the drying rate increased 10-40% when acoustic radiation was introduced into a rotary kiln but was dependent upon the environmental conditions; the application of vertical vibrations to multi-tiered drying screens increased the rate of moisture removal ten times over that obtained in the rotary kiln; the formation of coal balls in any of the drier systems retards the rate of drying; the higher the initial moisture content of the coal the greater the amount of coal balls formed.

Landfilling of waste causes the degradation of natural environment, not only due to land occupation, but also due to pollution of air, water and soil. The flotation waste from zinc-lead industry also poses such problem. There is a need to find the way to utilise substantial amount of these wastes and backfilling seems to be a good solution. Recently, in Poland only sand was used for backfilling. However, it will be more beneficial to substitute the sand with the industrial solid waste, especially flotation waste. The tests were performed in the laboratory to examine the use of flotation waste as a main ingredient for backfilling. The use of flotation waste is possible only when it is combined with other waste with specific bonding properties, especially regarding the prevention of leakage. The outcome of tests shows that flotation waste combined with cement and fly ashes can be used as a backfilling material. This paper presents the preparation of flotation waste for using it for backfilling.

In response to the underground mining industry&apos;s growing concern with the exposure of workers to the diesel particulate matter (DPM) component of diesel exhaust, a method was developed to estimate the average workplace concentration of DPM that could be expected from using the new lower DPMemitting engines now being approved by the US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) when these new engines are equipped with state-of-the-art exhaust-control, technology for filtering and combusting DPM. The resulting estimate uses the MSHA-reported particulate index for these engines, the prevailing rule-of-thumb ventilation rate of 150 cfm/hp and the available diesel-exhaust filter technology that has been shown to be at least 80% effective in reducing tailpipe DPM. In the estimate calculation, every engine used in an underground mine is assumed to be equipped with this control technology. Under the stated reasonable conditions, an average DPM level of 90 µg/m3 (mass) is predicted as technically feasible.

Poland in time of transition had been dealing with the remnants of the previous regime ? particularly in the field of environmental protection. The burden left was tremendous and there was a need for fast and effective tools for improving the environment. The idea of environmental protection had been supported by the introduction of a new environmental policy that underlined the importance of sustainable development in industry in the beginning of 1990s. This policy introduced high environmental fees and fines ? a concept not very popular in Europe in that time ? and good only for a country in transition to boost the protection of the environment. While this policy had its role to play, its role is now completed. It is time to move forward, especially when these environmental charges affect the international competitiveness of industries so much, and at the same time have virtually no influence on environmental protection investments any more.

The explosives community has seen tremendous technological advances during the past several decades. When this industry was in it's infancy and even past, Powder Monkey's defied the odds by relying on daring and cunning to unleash the power contained in nitroglycerin and black powder. Unlike the manufactured improvements, there has been little in professional evolution amongst the blasting fraternity unless provoked (for the most part) by the government. It is the intent of this author to advance the cause of an industry wide training and certification program, uniform in nature and broad-based enough to be voluntary, giving states whose outstanding programs are already in place, the opportunity to provide input. In creating this type of atmosphere, grandfathering, reciprocity and accessibility would be paramount. With ISEE taking a firm leadership role during the inception and NICET's involvement in the administration, the idea postulated here is intended to spark interest and debate, bringing the inception of such a program to the forefront.
