This chapter deals with the concepts of shock wave8 and detonation wavea together, because a detonation wave is really a shock wave, supported by the explosive reaction that the shock wave ignites and propagates as it travels through the explosive material. In the context of rock blasting, furthermore, there is justification for treating shock waves and detonation waves together, because the mechanical effect of the detonation in an explosive in a drillhole in rock is propagated and its effects are spread throughout the surrounding rock by means of a shock wave. The overall performance of an explosive in rock blasting or any other application is of course dependent on how much thermal energy is released in the chemical reaction that occurs when the material detonates, and on how much useful mechanical work the reaction products can do as they expand. A major portion of thii chapter deals with the prediction and measurement of explosive performance, a subject which is now still in a process of rapid development.

This project financed by the Bureau of Mines investigated the use of polymers to achieve rock bonding and reinforce coal mine structures for better or permanent ground support. Support was achieved by pumping the polymers into the rock interstices to bond the mass together for increased structural competence. Holes were drilled in the mine roof, after which the polymers were injected at about 100 psi to permeate the cracks. Initial laboratory work indicated that of all the resin systems tested, the epoxy resins could most likely be modified to be suitable for rock injection. This was confirmed when several potentially suitable resin systems underwent intensive evaluation. In a series of three field tests, two conducted in a copper mine with coal mine-type shale and the third in a coal mine, it was shown that the polymers penetrated cracks less than 0.005 inch wide. The fast-setting epoxy systems, cured out in thin films under mine conditions, produced a bond exceeding the strength of the uncracked virgin rock.

Development of brownfields is of great interest in these days. Such fields are not easily adaptable for foundations of structures. The uncertainties in ground behavior present challenges of unpredictable subsidence that could be detrimental to the build up facility. A desalination plant had to be located along the seashore, close to the needy population and the existing water supply infrastructure. The available site had been developed as a recreational park area over a dumped construction demolition debris landfill along the coastline. To construct a desalination plant comprised primarily of large concrete basin tanks on slab, founded on the debris fill had its challenges. A ground improvement system in the form of vibro replacement stone columns was designed and constructed. Approximately 5,000 stone columns were installed across the site. This paper describes the analysis process, the design, field load testing, and installation of stone columns. Difficulties during construction and monitoring aspects are briefly described. The plant started operations in the summer of 2008 and to date has performed satisfactorily. When properly designed, the development of brownfields is achievable at other sites.

WELL known to every metallurgist is the fact that different production schedules will profoundly affect the character of annealed metal strip. This Bureau of Mines report describes methods to electrodeposit erosion-resistant titanium diboride coatings from molten alkali metal borate baths at 900° C. These coatings have been shown to be highly resistant to material loss during impingement with high-velocity alumina and silicon carbide powders, and they show promise as protective coatings to reduce metal loss in erosive chemical environments, such as coal gasification systems. The most erosion-resistant coatings were prepared on nickel, Inconel, and molybdenum from an electrolyte containing LiBO2, NaBO2, Na2Ti03, and TiO2. The best coatings were deposited at current densities of [~]20 ma/cm2, using titanium or titanium diboride anodes. Erosion-resistant coatings were shown to exhibit (1) a high degree of crystallographic orientation along the (100) or (110) planes, (2) a chromium impurity level of less than 3 pct, and (3) a uniform, smooth, consolidated surface appearance when viewed under a microscope or by scanning electron microscopy. Optical spectroscopic studies of the molten electrolyte suggest that the lower valent (+3) titanium ion predominates in the baths.

Accelerometers of various types, velocity gages, and a displacement meter are shown to give reliable date when measuring seismic pulses generated in rock by the detonation of explosive charges. Displacement and velocity records are differentiated and shown to compare with velocity and acceleration records. Velocity and acceleration records are integrated and shown to compare with displacement and velocity records, respectively. The experimental data are shown to satisfy the scaling laws developed by dimensional analysis. Propagation laws are developed for peak amplitudes of the first pulse of displacement, velocity, and acceleration. These propagation laws are shown to be independent of the gage used to obtain the data. As a result, the usefulness of the various gage types can be extended. For example, accelerometers, because of their high frequency and amplitude limits, can be employed near the shot to measure acceleration and/or velocity (by integration), Velocity gages, because of their higher sensitivity, can be employed at relatively larger distances from the shot to measure velocity and displacement or acceleration (by integration or differentiation).

A series of 45 zirconium ingots has been cast by the consumable electrode arc melting process with the object of analyzing the effects of power input from 50 to 230 kilowatts and reduced pressure furnace atmosphere to improve the quality of regular 8-inch-diameter production ingots made thereby. Electrode consumption rate, molten pool volume, melting efficiency, sidewall quality, arc stability, and yield efficiency are considered. The use of direct current and alternating current is studied. In conclusion, reduced pressure furnace operation is shown to promote electrical efficiency, ingot homogeneity, high metal yield, and are stability. INTRODUCTION Zirconium is a particularly difficult metal to melt because of its affinity for atmospheric gases and its solvent properties when molten. In addition, zirconium sponge as produced by the boll process contains minor amounts of magnesium chloride, which cause severe spattering luring melting, because of these difficulties with zirconium, and its sister metal titanium, near techniques have been developed to permit production of commercial size ingots. Among the more promising is the consumable electrode arc melting method.

CORRECTLY speaking, iron ore is limited to any naturally occurring rock from which iron may be extracted at a profit, but in practice the term is frequently used to indicate borderline material or inaccessible material that may in the future become commercially profitable. This distinction is much more than quibbling about terminology. When a layman hears that there are about 45 billion tons of iron ore in the world he naturally thinks that sounds like quite a bit of rock, and what is the use of worrying about the depletion of so plentiful a material. He does not realize, nor does he stop to analyze. why iron ore in Europe and Japan may carry no more than 30 per cent iron while tremendous quantities of 50-60 per cent iron ore in Brazil are not exploited. To people in the iron industry the answer is obvious: the Brazilian material is inaccessible, and there is no suitable fuel near-by. In places closer to home, submarginal ore in considerable quantity contains undesired impurities, such as sulphur, phosphorus, or titanium.

In 1972, the Bureau of Mines developed a direct-method test for measuring the gas content of virgin coal core samples for coal mine health and safety considerations. Since that time, approximately 1,500 coal samples from more than 250 coalbeds in 17 States have been collected for gas content determination. The gas content data, when combined with geologic and engineering studies, can be used as a basis for a preliminary estimate of mine ventilation requirements, and to determine if methane drainage in advance of mining should be considered. The data are also critical in delineating coalbed methane resources and in utilization feasibility studies. This report makes the Bureau's extensive data base of gas content data more readily available to the coal and gas industries. The data are presented in tabular form, alphabetically by coalbed name and by State. The components of the total gas content (lost, desorbed, and residual gas) are given, Location (State and county), sample depth, coalbed or formation name, and coal rank are included for geographic and geologic identification.

THE dimensions and shapes of mine structures may at present be determined by (1) field experience, (2) structural calculations, and (3) barodynamic tests.§ None of these, however, provide information as to the stresses, their direction and distribution in a mine structure. For the design of pillars, the placing of openings relative to working places such as gangways, haulage levels, etc., this information is desirable. Photoelastic methods provide this and, while relatively new, their appli-cation in all engineering fields is assuming increasing importance. This paper, therefore, will present the method with a few applications to mining, and with sufficient reference for further study by the reader. PART I THE PHOTOELASTIC METHOD The photoelastic method of stress measurement determines the stress distribution in a two-dimensional model by optical means. It makes use of the fact that when a piece of isotropic transparent material, such as glass, celluloid, or Bakelite, is stressed and viewed in polarized** light a picture is seen which indicates by its color bands of light, or fringes, the magnitude of the stresses, their direction and their distribution.

Numerous mine fires have resulted in high death tolls and considerable finan¬cial loss during the history of coal mining. In most instances the death toll and financial loss were greater because of inadequate fire-fighting facilities. The information in this report is presented in the hope it may serves as a guide in the selection, placement, and care of fire-protection systems in similar coal mines. The adequacy of fire protection varies according to size of operation, employment, and production. When fires occur on the surface or underground, measures must be applied quickly to prevent incipient fires from spreading. The record of coal-mine fires shows that, in many instances, facilities for combating fires were very meager or were absent. It would be virtually impossible to establish and maintain all the necessary facili¬ties that may be needed to extinguish widespread mine fires, but it is believed that the coal industry can ill afford less than the minimum required by other industries where the time element and avenues of escape are much more favorable.

Structures supported on ACIP and DD piles perform successfully when quality control is maintained from the initial site subsurface investigation through pile design, bidding, and construction. The four stages of ACIP / DD pile construction are: preparation, augering the pile, grout / concrete placement, and reinforcement installation. During all four stages, careful observations and communication between the contractor and the owner's engineering inspection personnel are vital to successful pile completion. Automated monitoring equipment (AME) exists to supplement, but not replace, the field personnel's observations during the pile augering and grouting operations. Full-scale field load testing is done to verify the pile's geotechnical and structural design, and the contractor's pile installation means and methods, using several procedures including: conventional top loading, high-strain dynamic, rapid axial compression (i.e. Fundex PLT and Statnamic), and Osterberg Cell. Non-destructive sonic testing is performed to investigate the below-grade sectional properties of the completed pile; such methods include: low-strain impulse testing, and single-hole and cross-hole sonic logging. Post-construction observations are necessary to verify pile location and top properties prior to overlying cap construction.

A research study was conducted to devise a method for producing phosphoric acid directly from unbeneficiated Florida phosphate matrix. This research was performed as part of the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, goals of improving minerals and metals recovery from domestic resources and of minimizing the environmental impact associated with mineral recovery operations. This report describes research in which unbeneficiated, dry, south-central Florida phosphate matrix was digested with sulfuric acid in a continuous-circuit, five-tank reactor to yield phosphoric acid and gypsum residue. Feed capacity of the reactor was 100 pounds (45 kg) of dry matrix per 24-hour day. When digestion was carried out at 185° F (85° C), acid filtration rates of up to 420 pounds of P20S per square foot per day were attained. Combined iron and aluminum impurities in the product filter acid were about 60 percent greater than values reported in commercially produced acid derived from concentrate. phosphate recovery was 87 to 90 percent of the phosphate contained in the as-mined matrix.

INTRODUCTION WE have endeavored in the following "sheets" to give the unit construction costs derived from the building of the Arizona Copper Co.'s new smelter, Clifton, Ariz., starting in February, 1912, and completing February, 1914. 1 In Chapter I-Unit Costs-are to be found the most elementary total unit costs which the accounts provide for. They are usable in the Clifton district. Here too are found the percentages to be added to an estimate for Engineering and General Expense. In Chapter II-Comparative Costs-these elementary costs have been classified, averaged and reported as labor and material unit costs. In such form the labor unit costs, when properly applied to similar conditions as these under which they were derived, are usable anywhere. The material unit costs are better disregarded for more accurate estimates and replaced by a newly priced bill of material. In Chapter III Composite Costs are given. The inherent weakness of the Zincor and similar iron removal processes is the relatively high undissolved zinc loss associated with the iron residue. High soluble zinc losses also occur due to poor filterability of the iron residue even though it may be limited to intermittent events. This work focussed on defining the optimum operating window for the Zincor iron removal process where iron is mainly removed in the form of amorphous, intermediate iron phases such as schwertmannite and ferrihydrite. In terms of the main operating conditions, optimum filterability was achieved under the following conditions: pH of 3.0, temperature as high as practically possible (70C), at least 25 kg/m3 seeding, and a retention time of at least 4 hours. When increasing the temperature from 60C to 70C, the required residence time decreased by almost 50%. Undissolved zinc loss was also reduced from 8% to between 2% and 3% by using a basic zinc sulphate/zinc oxide mixture as neutralising agent to effect iron removal.

A joint effort by the Bureau of Mines and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), U.S. Department of Labor, was undertaken to determine how well self-contained self-rescuers, deployed in accordance with Federal Regulations (30 CFK 75.1714), held up in the underground environment. This report presents findings regarding laboratory-tested breathing apparatus from the first year of a 5-yr program as well as other related findings. The SCSR's were tested on human subjects and on a breathing and metabolic simulator. These results indicate that the apparatus, if well-treated, perform as expected except for manufacturing defects or quality control problems, which are identified. However, when the apparatus are carried in and out of the mine every day and stored at the working section, they may suffer abuse that can be extreme. Physical signs of abuse, unless extremely obvious, frequently are not detected by the miners or the mine operators; this poses a danger to a potential user in case of emergency. Recommendations include improved training in inspection procedures.

COALS, other than anthracite, have been so thoroughly studied under the microscope during recent years, that we now know what kinds of plants and what parts of plants form the bulk of lower rank coals from peat to bituminous coal. The microscope has also shown the state of preservation of such vegetation as well as the nature and distribution of products of plant decay. These and further details have been ascertained mainly through the employment of two methods of attack, section cutting and maceration. Anthracite has failed to respond to these methods, so well adapted to the study of lower rank coals and, therefore, has been neglected by investigators to such an extent that there is much doubt as to its microscopical characteristics. The object of this paper is to lift anthracite from its realm of obscurity by demonstrating the wealth of microscopical detail that is revealed when reflected light is used on a properly polished and etched surface and, further, to show the relationship between anthracite and bituminous coal.

Comminution energy is principally energy of deformation before breakage, which appears as heat An empirical equation is presented which covers the entire comminution range. The new strain-energy theory considers comminution from the known principles of mechanics and the reduction ratio. Energy requirements according to the different theories the romnnred. THE present status of the theory of comminution is extremely unsatisfactory. The amount of various ores and rock products crushed and ground annually approaches the staggering sum of perhaps one half billion tons. Yet the basic concepts underlying an operation of such magnitude are unknown, and actual knowledge of what takes place in comminution is almost entirely empirical. The responsibility for this situation cannot be charged to apathy or lack of appreciation of the importance of the problem. Many attempts have been made to evolve a workable hypothesis, but none has been completely successful. General Considerations In order to break rock, it must be subjected to a stress which strains the rock beyond its critical breaking point. The stress imparts energy to the rock, most of which is released in the form of heat when the stress and resulting strain are removed. If the strain induced exceeds the critical strain, the energy is released by breaking; if the induced strain does not reach the critical point, the energy is released with removal of the stress as energy of resilience. Rock is a brittle material and it is assumed that it breaks approximately at its yield point, so that no permanent deformation results from strains below the critical. When rock is broken the total energy input is accounted for by the heat liberated, and by the surface energy of the new surface produced. A small and probably negligible amount is released as noise. Rock is commonly broken under compression and the applied stress is ordinarily compressive. However, for breakage to occur, it is only necessary that the induced strain exceed the critical value, and this strain may represent the resultant of compressive, shearing, and tensile forces. The stress-strain diagram of rocks under compression, and the modulus of elasticity as determined therefrom, should be fundamental considerations in the development of any theories of rock breakage. Crushing in jaw or gyratory crushers results primarily from a squeezing action, and reduction in a hammer mill is the result of impact. The action in rod and ball mills is a combination of impacting, squeezing, and wearing away by attrition, or rubbing. In ordinary crushing and grinding, the forces are applied at protruding points and are not distributed evenly throughout the rock. This is one of the features of comminution which theoretical considerations have not covered adequately. Another feature is the effect of impact velocities, which may greatly influence the total energy required for breakage. Impact velocities may vary from 1 or 2 fps in crushers to 10 or 20 fps for ball mills, and as high as 100 or more for hammer mills. However, according to the findings of geophysicists, the velocity of sound and of compression waves in stone is many times greater; the primary longitudinal compression waves travel at perhaps 15,000 fps, and the secondary transverse waves, which may reach the surface and cause cracks to form thereon, travel at perhaps 5000 fps. When a crack tip forms, the total surrounding stresses are concentrated in this tip, which rapidly extends throughout the rock particle.1 It would seem that the energy required to deform the rock beyond its critical strain, resulting in the formation of a crack tip, represents practically all of the energy required. Most of the primary crack tips presumably form on the surface. A simple method of designating feed and product size is necessary for the evaluation of crushing and grinding results. Taggart's suggestion2 that the 80 pet passing size be used has been found very practical. In this paper, the square opening screen size which 80 pct of the feed passes is designated as the feed size F, and the size which 80 pct of the product passes, or the product size, is designated as P. Recently equations have been presented by Rose and Bruce' and by Rose², showing how the relative permeability of a reservoir rock may be determined from the capillary character of the rock. In particular, equations were developed to show the relationship between capillary pressure and the effective permeability to the wetting phase in a poly-phase flow system. The equations are as follows (nomenclature the same as in the Rose and Bruce paper) Rose and Bruce assume that the average length of path (L,), which the wetting fluid follows in flowing through a porous media is independent of the saturation to the wetting phase, so that 1 is a constant dependent only on the k rock, and the permeability to the wetting phase is a function of the saturation and of the capillnry pressure: In measuring the flow of ekctric current through partially saturated core samples, it has been observed that the electrical resistance usually is not a simple linear function of saturation. This fact indicates that the average length of path in the flow of electric current is not independent of saturation, but rather that the tortuosity of the path depends upon the average saturation to the conducting fluid as well as upon the characteristics of the rock. itself. Inasmuch as the flow of fluid and the flow of electric current in many respects are analogous, it may be indicated further that the length of path for fluid also may not be independent of saturation. The following relationship can be derived to express the resistance to flow of electric current through a core sample partially saturated with conductive wetting phase, the non-wetting phase being non-conductive: where L is the average length of path followed by the current in flowing through a length L of partially saturated core, where L is the length of current path when the core is fully saturated, and where Rs and R, are the specific resistivities of the partially saturated and saturated core sample, respectively. It will be noted that R., the specific resistivity of the core sample when S, = 1.0, is equal to the "formation resistivity factor"' multiplied by the specific resistivity of the saturating fluid. If it be assumed that the average lengths of path for fluid flow and for the flow of electric current are the same, then equation (5) may be combined with equations (l), (2) and (3) to give the following relationship: The above equation suggests including a correction for tortuosity when calculating the relative permeability of a reservoir rock to a wetting phase. The correction factor may be obtained from the resistivity-saturation relationship.
