THE country rock of the Mavrovouni mine of the Cyprus Mines Corp. is hydrothermally altered, disintegrated pillow lava, with very little tensile strength ("short" ground). In places, especially when wet, it is heavy ground, though not extremely heavy except where movement has been caused by underlying or nearby stoping operations. Damage by caving from roof or sides of galleries is not sudden but progressively faster when the size of the cave increases as a result of the fall of small pieces. CEMENT AND CONCRETE LININGS During early operations, galleries in the country rock were supported by customary mine-timbering methods. Available timber, however, was of poor quality and of relatively high price, and replacements were frequent and expensive. Furthermore, the massive sulphide ore bodies required large volumes of fresh air for ventilation and cooling, and it was therefore desirable to provide smooth-lined galleries with low resistance for the introduction of air to the ore bodies. It was also desirable to eliminate hazards of fire in shafts and underground workings insofar as this would be practical. Cement and concrete were relatively cheap, and plans for using these in support of shafts, underground galleries, raises, and chutes, were developed steadily. Circular shafts with diameters ranging from 10 to 15 ft were adopted for all permanent shafts and airways. In places these were lined with concrete poured behind sectional pressed-steel forms especially constructed for this purpose. In other places, they were lined with precast-concrete blocks. It was found that such precast concrete of good quality could be produced on mass production scale and delivered at the mine from most favorable point of manufacture, at a cost of about 25 cents per cubic foot of concrete. This refers to prewar costs. As the use of concrete blocks in circular lined galleries was developed, it was found that there were very great advantages in the reduction of air resistance as compared with customary timber supports. After best methods had been developed, it was found that breakage and replacements were extraordinarily low, averaging only about 1 ½ pct per year during a period of about 15 years. Furthermore, it has been possible to reclaim for re-use a very large percentage of the concrete blocks from abandoned galleries. During the history of the operations precast-concrete blocks have been used for lining shafts, raises, ore chutes, galleries, and shaft stations, ranging from 3 to 16 ft id. The thickness of lining has varied from 5 to 10 in.; with I2 in. thickness in a few cases. Junctions of two galleries at angles ranging from about 30 to 60° are usually made of poured concrete behind sectional forms, or of a combination of poured concrete and precast blocks. Low-power, high-speed, radiation-resistant, monolithic thin-film integrated circuits require thin-film resistors of high sheet resistance which are compatible with the processing requirements for monolithic silicon devices. For this purpose the structure and electrical resistance as a function of temperature were investigated for Nichrome-silicon monoxide cermet films on passivated single-crystal silicon substrates. A suitable material was found to be a mixture of 50 vol pct Nichrome-50 vol pct silicon monoxide. This mixture, when evaporated onto 300°C substrates. showed a low temperature coefficient up to 400°C, at both 270 and 1100 ohms per square. Resistors deposited on room-temperature, 300°, and 500°C substrates were heat-treated at 600°C in air for short periods of H- seed, low-power, radiation-re sis tant, monolithic thin-film integrated circuits'-3 require thin-film resistors of high sheet resistance and low temperature coefficients of resistance which are compatible with the processing requirements for monolithic silicon active devices. The present investigation is directed towards the replacement of the Nichrome in the sandwich-type SO2-Nichrome-SiO resistors, currently used for DTL monolithic thin-film integrated circuits, with codeposited Nichrome-SiO cermet resistors. These Nichrome-SiO resistors are provided with an overcoat of SiO and are deposited onto thermally oxidized silicon wafers used in monolithic mi-crocircuit technology. The cermet resistors are shown to provide a lower temperature coefficient of time totaling up to 45 min. Electron nzicrogvaphs and diffraction patterns were taken of the as - deposited and heat-treated films. These results were then compared with electrical-resistance measurements for each condition. The room-temperature and 300°C substrate films showed a large decrease in resistance. The 500°C substrate film remained stable throughout the entire cycle. Electron-microscopy results show that the increased stability after heating to 600°C is largely due to crystallization of the films which begins in the vicinity of 400°C. The slight oxidation of the films when heated in air had a negligible effect on the resistance. The resistance of the film was a function of the substructure. resistance and a more versatile compatibility with silicon monolithic processing. Previous work3, on chromium-SiO coevaporated cermet resistors on glass and ceramic substrates without overcoats of SiO has been reported. For the present application, the thin films should possess the following ideal requirements: a) a temperature coefficient of resistance as near zero as possible up to 300°C; b) have a sheet resistance higher than 200 ohms per sq to conserve space on the chip; c) be easy to evaporate; d) be oxidiation- and radiation-resistant; e) show long-time stability at 100°C; } be stable in N2 atmospheres up to 600°C for short periods of time (5 to 45 min). An investigation was carried out to determine the variables affecting the coiling temperature of strip in the 56-in. hot strip mill. After statistical treatment, equations have been derived to determine the temperature drop between mill and coiler for both full spray (top and bottom) and top spray only practices. The individual influences of each variable in the temperature drop were derived for both practices. Limitations of the present practices were shown and adjustments in cooling for increased rolling speeds were suggested. A method of estimating the required number of sprays, their spacing, pressure, etc., to achieve a desired temperature drop is developed. MAXIMUM finishing temperature of a hot strip mill is mainly determined by the rolling speed, gage, and the temperature of the bar entering the mill. This finishing temperature may be limited by the maximum admissible coiling temperature in cases when either the cooling facilities on the runout table are not adequate or, more generally, when the cooling capacity of the runout table and the production capacity of the continuous mill are out of balance. Some time ago, the balance between these two factors was not considered detrimental to production. Recently, a new drafting schedule was introduced which increased the production rate, the entry temperature, and hence the finishing temperature. Thus, the restriction of the maximum specified coiling temperature became an important factor for many of the thicker gages. An investigation of the factors determining the coiling temperature may be, therefore, of considerable importance. A brief description of the available equipment will be a useful illustration of the techniques and methods used for this investigation. The 56 in. continuous hot strip mill is composed of six 4-high stands each containing two 221/2-in. diam work rolls and two 45-in. diam back-up rolls. Either of the last two stands can be used as the finishing stand. Which stand is used is dependent on the total percentage of reduction to be taken over the whole train, i.e., on the entry thickness and the final gage. The characteristics of these last two stands are given in Table I. Table I. Abstract of an address delivered before the Royal Canadian Institute, Toronto, April 16, briefly outlining the importance of mining in the United States, in Canada, and in the world. Comparison is made of the mineral production for 1886, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1929, showing that in the 43 years from 1886 to 1929 that of the world increased nearly tenfold, of the United States over twelvefold and of Canada thirtyfold, but that Canada's output was equivalent to only 2 per cent of the world total and to 5 per cent of that of the United States in 1929. Statistical tables and graphs show value of production, percentage of world production contributed by Canada and the United States, etc. The mining situation in Canada is briefly reviewed: only those American engineers who have had occasion to examine the figures appreciate the rapidity of growth of Canadian mineral production. The treatment of minerals involves vast complex industries. When we are producing, say, 6 billion annually, the employment of 2 million workers provides indirect support to perhaps 10 million people. Exploiting mineral deposits is peculiar in certain ways, for the deposits are exhaustible, are of rare occurrence when measured in terms of outcrop area compared to total earth area, and may suddenly be handicapped or superseded by new discoveries; moreover, the economic position of the contained metals is 'affected by the use of scrap metal and the existence of invisible stocks. The largest and most valuable of the mineral deposits are not the metals, but rather the fuels. SINCE metallurgy exists to provide strong, tough, engineering materials it must inevitably be perpetually concerned with the problem of brittle-ness. The steel-making industry was created because chemically unrefined iron is brittle. The steel-working and alloy-steel industries exist partly because hardness and ductility are mutually exclusive qualities in structurally unrefined steel. Yet, in spite of these immense industries, the brittle failure of steel ships hulls, bridges, pressure vessels, and pipelines, is still a contemporary problem. In fact, brittleness is a normal property of most solids, including metals and alloys, at low temperatures. Only face-centred cubic metals are commonly ductile at the lowest temperatures, and even here exceptions are known.'," Expensive are-melting processes. under inert gases or vacuum, have been developed to overcome brittleness in titanium, zirconium, columbium. and molybdenum. Polycrystal-line zinc, magnesium, and uranium have little ductility at room temperature. Beryllium, chromium, and tungsten have even less; similarly for antimony, bismuth, germanium, silicon, intermetallic compounds, and metallic carbides, nitrides, silicides, and borides. Oxides and other ceramics would be ideal creep-resistant materials but for their extreme brittleness when cold, and great efforts have been made to overcome this problem by mixing ceramics with metals. In fact, the traditional use of the name metallurgy for what is really the science of engineering materials is a recognition that most non-metallic solids have so far been precluded, by their extreme brittleness, from use as major structural materials in mechanical engineering. Most of what we know about brittleness in metals has come from studies of structural steel, and it is this material that shall mainly be considered. The things we have learned from it have a wider application, at least to other body-centred cubic transition metals, although the extent to which similar ideas can be applied to hexagonal metals and other materials is not yet clear. Fracture and Plastic Deformation The theoretical breaking strength of an ideal solid, about E/10 where E is Young's modulus, has been approached reasonably closely in experiments on fibres. But large specimens break at much lower stresses. For example, brittle cracks in large structural steel assemblies have been observed to spread catastrophically at speeds of 6000 ft per sec under stresses of about 10,000 psi, i.e. about E/3000. There are two sources of weakness; stress concentrations, and chemical agents in grain boundaries or on crack faces that lower the surface energy y of the material. Although we shall deal mainly only with the first of these, much of the discussion is also applicable to the second when different values of y are used. TUBES may be produced by a large number of forming processes, the most common of which will be discussed analytically in this paper. In no case will the stress analysis for any given tube producing process be derived formally for where such analyses are available, they may be referred to readily. Rather, emphasis will be placed on the interpretation of the theory of the different processes, few of which are developed to a state that will allow rigorous mathematical analyses, in an attempt to give a rational description of the effects of the different variables involved in each method. Tube producing methods can be divided into two groups: Those used to form shells, and those used to further work these shells into a shape more suitable for their final use. Among the first group are included roll piercing, extrusion and cupping for seamless shells, and bending with welding for welded tubes. The re-forming processes include sinking, drawing with a plug, and drawing with a rod. Only the plastic forming operations will be discussed here; other forming processes such as casting shells will not be considered. PRODUCTION OF SHELLS Shells for Seamless Tubing Piercing: The extremely important process of forming an axial hole in a billet by oblique rolling never has been analyzed satisfactorily, although a certain amount of experimental work relating to this process has been conducted. There are a number of factors that make piercing difficult to analyze; one of these is the fact that piercing is not a problem in plasticity, but one in fracturing, and the laws of fracturing are even less well understood than those of plasticity. If, however, it is assumed that fracturing occurs on a surface as a result of tensile stresses acting normal to this surface, piercing can be analyzed qualitatively by examining the stresses established in the oblique rolling process. To determine the origin of the tensile stresses that are thought to effect piercing, it will be necessary to know the angular relationships between the maximum stresses that are established in piercing. These angles quite frequently can be determined in a plastic deformation process by an examination of the deformed product. For example, consider the stresses established when a tensile test is conducted on a rectangular cross-sectional specimen of pearlitic steel. When stretched, this material first flows plastically, exhibiting the well-known yield jog on a stress-strain curve. The formation of the slip areas that give rise to the yield jog can be detected during the straining, since these flowed areas cause depressions on the specimen surfaces which can be seen if the surfaces are polished highly. The plastically strained areas also can be found after the specimen has been stretched to a strain not exceeding the yield jog, by sectioning the test piece and. etching these sections with Fry's etch. Steam-injection tests in the field have shoum that heat transport into the oil/water region, ahead of the steam zone, may have a significant effect on the production process. Earlier theoretical work on reservoir heating by hot-fluid injection can be used to describe the growth of the steam zone, but only if heat transport from steam zone into oil/water region is neglected. It therefore became necessary to re-examine and extend the earlier theory. It was found that this theory ceases to be consistent with the physical model of the process at a certain critical time, tc, which depends on reservoir thickness, temperature, and quality of the steam. The critical time marks an important change in the heat flow across the condensation frovt: the heat flow, which is purely conductive during 0 < t < tc&apos; becomes predominantly convective at t = tc. Accordingly, at t = tc, the equation which governs expansion of the steam zone changes. On the basis of the new equation, an approximate description for the steam-zone growth during t > tc is developed by making use of upper and lower bounds for the exact solution of the problem. The boundary conditions for heat and mass flow inside the oil/water region are established, and a simple method of detennining the saturation at the downstream side of the condensation front is presented. Experimental results show that the theory gives an accurate description of steam-zone expansion before the critical time. At times near critical time, and also after critical time, experimental data show theoretical steam-zone volumes to be high. Even so, the accuracy of the calculated steam-zone volumes is sufficient for practical purposes. THEORY OF STEAM-ZONE GROWTH INTRODUCTION The engineering evaluation of steam-drive processes is based mainly on a mathematical description of reservoir heating by hot fluid injection presented several years ago by Marx and Langenheim.l This theory can be used to determine the growth of the steam zone,2 provided the flow of heat from the steam zone into the liquid zone ahead of the condensation front (Fig. 1) is neglected. Since we must expect, however, that heat transport into and inside the liquid region (the region between condensation front and production wells) will affect both the water/oil flow and the growth of the steam zone, it is necessary to re-examine and to generalize the Marx and Langenheim theory as applied to steam drive, which will hereafter be termed the "old" theory. Observations made in several field tests emphasize the need to study the heat flow across the condensation front (CF). On several occasions it was discovered that heat was transported in the liquid zone far ahead of the advancing CF, resulting in an early breakthrough of warm water. What would appear to be a very simple process on paper has proved to be overrun with a multitude of unseen difficulties. For more than 70 years attempts have been made to cast metals in a continuous manner, but it has been only within the last Io years that some degree of success has been achieved.1 Historical Development Bessemer&apos;s Experiments—Method I Bessemer was the first to try to cast molten metal in a continuous manner. His method is fully described in U. S. Patent No. 49053, issued in 1865. The patent drawing is shown in Fig. I. In this method the molten metal was poured between a pair of rolls of large diameter, which were cooled by water sprays. Means were provided to prevent moisture from coming into direct coptact with the molten metal. The width of the strip was controlled by the flanges. On paper this should work to perfection, but it is beset with many difficulties still awaiting solution. Bessemer failed to reduce his invention to commercial practice. About 1890 Bessemer&apos;s method was revived by Norton and associates (U. S. Patent No. 441375). They formed the Fluid Metal Rolling Co. at Maywood, Ill., and spent $250,000 in endeavoring to develop the technique for this simple method. Finally they had to abandon it. Naturally, they did carry the technical development far beyond anything Bessemer had done, but even so it was far from being a useful commercial success. In recent years it has undergone further development by C. W. Hazelett (U. S. Patent No. 2058447), who has succeeded in obtaining long lengths of copper, brass, aluminum, and even stainless steel. He introduced many&apos; ingenious devices but the greatest obstacle still remained—the disintegration of the roll surface when the surface is heated and chilled in rapid succession. Difficulty is also experienced in maintaining a uniform supply of molten metal to the rolls. The patents pertaining to this method would indicate these to be the major obstacles. Experimental work by Mellen—Method 2 A departure from the method introduced by Bessemer, was tried by Grenville Mellen, of East Orange, K. J., sometime between 1914 and 1920, who obtained a number of patents.2 His method is illustrated in Fig. 2. This method failed to make an impression upon the art; however, it is of value in pointing out the difficulties the inventor ran into and the way in which he tried to meet them. The split mold sections form two endless chains. When going through the center of the apparatus, these sections engage each other to form a complete mold. As the engaged mold section moves downward at a constant speed, molten metal is teemed into it. As this is going on, another set of cooperating mold sections move into position on top of the one being filled. The molten metal is teemed into the mold through a silica tube. Enthalpy-entropy diagrams are presented for natural gases of 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9, and 1.0 gravity over the pressure range of 5 to 10,000 Ib. per sq. in. and temperature range of 32º to 700°F. The charts indicate directly the work requirement and temperature rise for adiabatic compression or temperature change for free emansion of natural eases. Computation and Uses of Charts The Mollier diagram (Fig. 4), in which the enthalpy (heat content) is plotted against the entropy with lines of constant temperature, pressure,, and in some cases volume, has been found most convenient when dealing with the compression, expansion, and flow of fluids. In dealing with the flow of fluids, the sum of the increase in the enthalpy, AH, plus the increase in kinetic energy, AM —, plus the increase in potential energy, ?MZ, representing the total increase in energy of the fluid in flow, is equal to the sum of the heat q, and work added, —w, to the fluid while flowing between the entrance and exit of the flow system. AH + AM— + ?MZ = q-w [1] In cases where there is no significant change in potential energy or in kinetic energy (velocity), it follows that the increase in enthalpy is equal to the total energy supplied to the fluid. Under such conditions&apos; the changes in the property of the fluid as it flows through a throttling valve, choke, or any other similar arrangement, may be read directly from the enthalpy-entropy diagram by following a horizolltal line between the known pressures&apos; When compressing Or expanding a gas by means of a Or or engine in which no heat is added to or subtracted from the gas, but only work done, the changes in the properties of the gas may be determined along a vertical line of constant entropy between the entering and exit pressures. The power required for the compression of the gas may be readily determined by converting the increase in enthalpy into the desired units. The enthalpy-entropy diagram for natural gases is to the gas engineer what the steam diagram is to the steam-power engineer. For this reason it would be extremely convenient if a reasonably satisfactory enthalpy-entropy diagram could be prepared as a function of the gravity of the gas. A careful study of the known properties of natural gas indicate that this is possible. The effect of temperature upon the enthalpy at constant pressure is expressed as the "heat capacity" or "specific heat" of the gas. The best available data for natural and petroleum refinery gases indicates the relationship shown in Fig. I. From this it is clear that the specific heat of natural gases is a function only of the gas gravity and the temperature at atmospheric pressure. The behaviors and stress distributions of the inclined jointed rock masses with different dip angles obtained from DDA are compared to the results of laboratory tests. By calculating the block stress distributions, it is confirmed that DDA can reproduce the arching around the trap door when lowering the trap door. The shapes of arching change with the angles of inclined layers. In addition, the earth pressures acting on the trap door shows non-symmetrical distributions when the layers are not horizontal. The stress concentration occurs in one side of the rock masses close to the trap door. Furthermore, the surface settlements are also related to the inclined angle, and the loosening zone in rock masses can be different from Terzghi’s theory [1]. Since, simulations have good agreements with the laboratory test , it demonstrates the applicability of DDA to explain the mechanical behaviors of tunnel, such as arching phenomenon, non-symmetrical earth pressure distributions acting on the trap door, and the surface settlement profile in the jointed rock masses. Dans cet article est décrite l’étude numérique du perçage d’un tunnel dans un massif de couches rocheuses jointes inclinées. La simulation à l’aide de l’Analyse de Déformation Discontinue (DDA), en faisant varier l’angle d’inclinaison des couches de roche, nous apporte des résultats en termes de distributions de contraintes et de comportement des couches, résultats qui sont ensuite comparés avec des résultats de tests en laboratoire. Les résultats confirment le fait que la DDA est capable de reproduire le phénomène d’arcage autour de la trappe lorsque la trappe s’abaisse. Les formes d’arcage varient selon l’angle d’inclinaison des couches de roche. Par ailleurs, lorsque les couches ne sont pas horizontales, la distribution de pression agissant sur la trappe est assymmétrique. La concentration de contraintes se produit du coté proche de la trappe. De plus, les tassements de surface dépendent eux aussi de l’angle d’inclinaison. En conséquence, les résultats de simulation sont en accord avec les tests en laboratoire, ce qui prouve que la DDA permet d’expliquer des comportements mécaniques du tunnel tels que l’arcage, les distributions assymmétiques de pression du sol sur la trappe, ainsi que le profil du tassement de surface dans la masse de roches jointes. Die Resultate bestätigen, dass DDA der Gewölbewirkung im „Trapdoor“ Experiment gut reproduzieren kann. Die Form des Gewölbes, ändert sich mit unterschiedlichen Neigungswinkeln der Schichten. Bei geneigten Schichten entstehen unsymmetrische Druckverteilungen. Auch die Oberflächenabsenkung ist von dem Neigungswinkel abhängig. Die gute Übereinstimmung der Simulationen mit den Laborversuchen zeigt, dass die DDA-Methode gut geeignet ist, um das mechanische Verhalten von Tunneln, wie z.B. den Effekt der Gewölbewirkung, die unsymmetrischen Druckverteilungen bei geneigten Schichten, oder die Oberflächenabsenkung in geklüfteten Felsenmassen, zu erklären.

IN previous metallographic work on titanium and its alloys, difficulty has been encountered in distinguishing spheroidal particles of titanium hydride, dispersed in a-titanium, from other phases that may be present, such as p-titanium. This problem is common in examination of commercial unalloyed titanium.&apos; In the course of an investigation of the Ti-H phase diagram, it was noted that titanium hydride, dispersed in a matrix of a-titanium, showed strong optical anisotropy when examined under polarized light. With sensitive tint illumination, particles of the hydride, when the stage is rotated, changed from bright yellow to bright blue in color. Since P-titanium is cubic, it showed no color change on rotation, remaining dark gray or blue-gray. Although a-titanium is hexagonal, it showed only a minor color change, going from pale pinkish-blue to pale purplish-blue. These colors could be modified somewhat by adjustment of the illumination. They were observed in specimens mechanically polished, both without etching and after etching with hydrofluoric acid-nitric acid mixtures in either water or glycerine. The strong color change of the hydride seems to offer a simple method for its metallographic identification. Optical anisotropy of titanium hydride is inconsistent with its accepted face-centered-cubic structure.&apos; Samples of iodide titanium containing 6 to 40 atomic pct deuterium were prepared for diffraction studies. After deuterating and slow cooling&apos; the samples were held 21 % hr at 400 °C, water quenched, held 61 hr at 100°C and quenched, then held 64% hr at 255 C and quenched. Debye ex-posures with MoKa X-rays and 1.111A neutrons were made at room temperature of samples as-deuterated and after the 100" and 255°C treatments. Table I shows the lines observed, in addition to those attributable to a-titanium. These data show that the hydride phase was not cubic, but probably tetragonal. The titanium atoms appeared to form a body-centered-tetragonal lattice complex, two titanium atoms per cell, with approximate dimensions: a = 3.12A, c = 4.18A, and c/a =1.34A. This is equivalent to a face-centered-tetragonal complex, four titanium atoms per cell, with approximate dimensions: a = 4.42A, c = 4.18A, and c/a - 0.946A. The presence of the 2.98 and 1.81A neutron lines indicates that the true Bravais lattice is not identical with this lattice complex, but may be primitive tetragonal with dimensions some multiple of those of the complex. The relative intensities of the hydride and a-titanium X-ray lines as functions of overall composition indicated that the hydride, presumably in equilibrium with the a at 100" to 255"C, contained more than 62 atomic pct H. "When executing offshore bored piles there are several specific factors and problems to consider in order to guarantee excavation stability. One of the methods employed to carry out this type of work consists in setting up a floating work platform, typically a barge, and implementing a soil stabilization system that combines a partial steel guiding casing with third generation polymeric drilling fluids. The main aspects to take into consideration when performing offshore pile boring works are soil stabilization, project design, work methodology and operational aspects. An example of a work methodology problem arises before any pile boring work takes place as the steel guiding casing contains water, sometimes salt water. What to do with this water in order to replace it by an adequate polymer fluid will determine the stabilization capacity as soon as the shaft advances below the protection of the casing. Another example of operational problem may derive from barge movements while executing boring activities. This study is the result of extensive field data collection and concrete logging analysis from marine projects using polymers in different continents. The bored pile stability target was set ranging between 2% to 15% of concrete overbreak. Values above 15% or below 2% mean that there is a stability problem. Then the off-target pile’s data is collected, analyzed and classified under categories. Thus, a direct correlation is established between the problem category and the final results. Modifying steps in the pre-established construction methods or operational variables guarantees target results without the need to replace the approved construction methods. As a general conclusion, the worldwide experience in large diameter marine works, allows to provide truthful information and solutions for these problems. In knowing how to follow a logical sequence of work and applying adequate work methodology will be the key for success.GENERALBackgroundTo carry out the drilling process of offshore bored piles there are two main options to take into consideration: drilling the pile by using full guiding casing until final depth; or using a combined system of partial steel guiding casing and support drilling fluids.The knowledge and situations described in this paper come from the experience acquired in different projects where the second method was employed. This construction method consists in installing a steel guiding casing by vibration and thus covering the water table and further stabilizing the soil below it with polymeric fluids until reaching the pile’s final depth. The Fig. 1 schematic shows an example of this method where H corresponds to the length of the steel guiding casing whereas the remainder of the shaft’s length is stabilized by polymer fluid. The entire bored length is full of slurry up to top of casing.In most cases this kind of civil works results from the need to build a bridge or executing port structures in places where the creation of temporary artificial peninsulas with fill material is impracticable or not allowed. Hence the need to use floating work platforms, commonly referred to as barges."

Spiraling costs in every segment of the open-pit mining cycle is a fact of life that every operator must reckon with. The introduction of various shock absorbing devices for rotary drilling is one recent innovation that may significantly reduce overall drilling cost, increase drill availability, and lower maintenance requirements. In a recent all-inclusive test in taconite ores, shock absorbers on Bucyrus-Erie BE 60R and Gardner¬Denver GD 120 rotary drills were directly responsible for overall savings of up to $41.06 per hour. What is It? A shock absorber is simply a device installed between the rotary drive head and drill steel that cushions the two. It functions in the same manner as springs and shocks on an automobile. Some benefits associated with use of the tool are readily apparent on a daily basis; other benefits are realized over longer time intervals and through continued use. A properly designed shock absorber will: •protect the drill from severe vi¬brations, improve rock bit performance, allow application of the best weight-on-bit and rotating speed under all drilling conditions, •function effectively over a wide range of applied bit weights, • have a spring rate soft enough to perform its primary function of absorbing both rotary and vertical vibrational forces generated by rough drilling, •be reliable and subject to as little maintenance as possible, •be easy to install and remove, and • be of such an economic benefit so as to offset the added expense of its application. A shock absorbing tool developed by BJ-Hughes Inc. was used in a recent test. The "Smoothdrill" is just one of the products currently available. This unit absorbs both rotary and vertical shock loads and has no mechanical parts so lubrication is unnecessary. A rebuild of the unit consists of removing the worn rubber element and inserting a new element, an operation taking less than one hour. Minimizing Vibrations Severe vibrations on a blasthole drill operating in broken and discontinuous formations have visible effects. These vibrations often cause structural damage when allowed to&apos; continue, resulting in fatigue cracks in the mast and related structural components in the drill. When rough running formations are encountered, drilling must be interrupted and possibly shut down. Usually, the drill operator resumes drilling using less down pressures and various rotational speeds until firmer drilling is encountered. An effective shock absorber can substantially reduce these vibrational forces so more down pressure can be applied in bad ground. It is generally accepted that longitudinal vibrations and cyclic forces are more effectively reduced if a tool is designed to incorporate a relatively "soft" shock absorber. The softness of any shock absorbing tool is best judged by its spring rate-the weight required to produce a given amount of deflection, commonly expressed in units of kg per mm or pounds per inch of deflection. Asking the question, “What do the world’s leading corporations and cutting-edge practitioners of sustainability put forth to guide a given mine site for planning and action toward ‘sustainability’?”, this paper explores the spectrum of methodologies and mindsets in available literature, then constructs an example for the large near-closure facility at Kennecott Utah Copper. Values, opportunities and constraints spring from physical, unutilized byproducts, from critical ecosystems and wildlife populations, from location relative to those ecosystems and proximate communities, and from the political will to perform adequate feasibility investigations. Patience, determination and thoroughness are imperative. Identifying most productive and, simultaneously, most protective and restorative, practical methods to approach ‘sustainability’ has become a central mission of industry and business, worldwide. A survey of recent international initiatives finds no single approach that establishes either a readily adaptable methodology or an appropriate set of ‘attention’ points, or agenda, to guide individual mining operations at specific locations toward the elusive but essential goal of ‘sustainable’ mining. Untying this convoluted knot of contending factors requires willingness to recognize and work within ecological constraints for community long-term needs. Occasionally, the task requires the sword of Alexander the Great. Through integration that is unflinchingly honest ethically, culturally, economically, ecologically and scientifically, fully cognizant of place and community at whatever scales are of greatest significance, and integrative of both problem-response and opportunity, we may envision a mineral extraction and beneficiation future that achieves the best, most nearly sustainable, results possible. Industrial ecology (IE), with its clear emphasis on community, ecosystems, and sustainable economic stimulation, presents a sufficiently broad and adaptable discipline to facilitate planning and management toward sustainable mining. The creation of sustainable jobs encapsulates IE’s analogy to the niche survival strategies of organisms in nature. Open to common-sense recognition of faults and opportunities at appropriate scales, IE is less a discipline or prescribed methodology than a mindset, willing to be rigorously scientific when science is imperative, but also willing to exercise “art” when creativity or community engagement are needed. IE is also capable of future-looking compassion for peoples and nature. Looking beyond what has occurred to date, the case of Kennecott Utah Copper provides ample illustration of possibilities for community economic development, environmental management, and significant initiatives beneficial at regional and planetary scales, to become recognizable as deserving of the label, ‘sustainable.’ Through what this researcher terms “whole mine, whole region, whole planet” thinking, strategies become visible and subject to serious consideration, presenting a path to best possible accomplishment in mining. Constituting a maximal broadening of mining’s “traditional” scope, the integrative approach proposed here is the ‘paradigm shift’ being made by many other industries around the world. In aggregate, these steps are the only hope for avoidance of environmental, social and economic risks that threaten to curtail resource development and impair mining companies’ ‘social license to operate.’

"A recent study calibrated Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) resistance factors for local soil conditions in the Las Vegas Valley. As a part of this calibration, an extensive database of drilled shaft load tests and associated subsurface soil information were collected and compiled. This database, deemed the Nevada Department of Transportation Deep Foundation Load Test Database or NDFLTD, was designed with the presentation of load test data, the subsurface soil conditions, and the spatial distribution of the data in mind. In addition, the NDFLTD was developed in a way that allows additional data to be added as it becomes available. As such, the rules of database normalization were followed to allow for additional and different types of data to be added to the database and reports. Microsoft Access was chosen to present the data because it is easily accessible to anyone with Microsoft office software, it has a quick learning curve, and it has the ability to present a relational database. The largest obstacle faced when creating the NDFLTD was normalizing the data used in the LRFD calibration, with the goal of reaching the 5th normal form.INTRODUCTIONLRFD is based on statistical performance of engineering components, as opposed to the more traditional Allowable Strength Design (ASD), which divides the strength of a component by a safety factor. Calibration of resistance factors for LRFD requires a robust statistical analysis of past performance. For drilled shafts this requires a database of full scale load tests (Abu-Hejleh et al. 2014). The FHWA developed the largest US based deep foundation load test database, deemed the DFLTD, collecting data from 1985 to 2003 when funds ran out (Abu-Hejleh et al. 2014). Recently, the DFLTD has been updated to modern standards (Petek et al. 2016). In October of 2007, the FHWA mandated state department of transportations (DOTs) to follow AAHSTO LRFD guidelines for their highway foundation designs (Abu-Hejleh et al. 2014). Since then multiple state DOTs have developed their own, region specific deep foundation load test databases. Florida has a long history of developing databases for deep foundation LRFD resistance factor calibration, with the two main databases being the FL database, and The Deep Foundations Database (Abu-Hejleh et al. 2014). Iowa developed a Microsoft Access based database in 2014 (Garder et al. 2014). Oregon developed a database compiling pertinent data from the DFLTD, Florida DOT’s Deep Foundation Database, as well as from other databases (Smith et al. 2011). Illinois developed the “International Database” for static and dynamic reliability based calibration (Long et al. 2009). Louisiana developed a database for LRFD Calibration of driven piles in 2009 (Abu-Farsakh et al. 2009). The California Department of Transportation has its own internal foundation database, which is housed within the Foundation Testing Branch archive (Smith et al. 2011). In 2016, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) presented its own LRFD calibration for the Las Vegas Valley (Stanton et al. 2017), and the NDFLTD was developed as a part of that project (Motamed et al. 2016)."

"While conducting investigations in connection with the helium program of the Bureau of Mines, the Cryogenic Laboratory has improved an apparatus for the rapid and accurate determination of the helium content of natural gas and gaseous mixtures derived from that source. The separation of helium is effected by the use of activated coconut charcoal which, when cooled to liquid-air temperatures, absorbs the nitrogen and other constituents of the gas, leaving the helium in a. spectroscopically pure state. This absorptive property of activated charcoal was discovered- by Dewar3/ in 1875. Several years later, while conducting their original researches on helium in natural gas, Cady and McFarland employed the charcoal method for the absorption and removal of the common constituents of natural gas and constructed an efficient apparatus in which this operation could be effected.4/ Shortly after initiating the government's helium activities during the World War period, the Bureau of Mines adopted, with Minor modifications, the Cady and McFarland apparatus and method of analysis. Seibel.5./ described this modified apparatus and method of procedure as part of a publication on helium-bearing natural gas. Subsequently, the Bureau's apparatus for helium analysis has been simplified and improved to facilitate more rapid and positive operation. The apparatus and method of procedure now being used by the Bureau of Mines Cryogenic Laboratory arc described in this paper.The personnel of the Bureau of Mines Cryogenic Laboratory has improved and brought the helium apparatus described herein to its present state of perfection. The writer's contributions have been-of minor importance, and he wishes to give the various members and former members of the laboratory staff full credit for the improvements they have made. Chemical methods, when applied to natural gas, require the burning of the hydrocarbons in oxygen, the, absorption of the resulting carbon dioxide in a caustic solution, the removal of the excess oxygen in a suitable solution such as an alkaline pyrogallate, and the elimination of nitrogen by sparking or by combination with hot calcium or magnesium.. Such procedures are very slow and tedious compared with the physical method which employs the absorptive property of activated charcoal to effect the separation of the other constituents from the helium."
