"Screening is an important means of size classification used on granular or particulate materials. The vibrating modes of screen separator have a great effect on the screening process. Elliptical vibration mode is a complex motion mode which gets the common characteristics of both linear and circular vibration modes. However, the fundamental motion and screen penetration of the particles on the elliptically vibrating screen deck are still poorly understood. A numerical study of the motion of particulates flow along an elliptically vibrating screen deck is presented by means of a three dimensional Discrete Element Method (3D-DEM). The motion characteristic of the particle flow is analyzed at a particle scale. The effects of vibration amplitude, throwing index, vibration direction angle and screen deck inclination angle on the screening process are discussed. The results show that the particles average velocity increases linearly with the increase of vibration amplitude, throwing index and screen deck inclination angle, but decreases linearly with the increase of vibration direction angle. The screening efficiency is highest when the vibration amplitude, throwing index, vibration direction angle and screen deck inclination angle are 4.5 mm, 3.3, 40° and 6°, respectively. This work is helpful for developing a deep understanding of particle motion on the elliptically vibrating screen and for optimizing screen separator designs."

"IntroductionBACK IN THE nineteen-thirties, when Eldorado was a private company and was preparing to become Canada's first radium producer, the Mines Branch in Ottawa did much work on the development of chemical processes for the Port Hope refinery (1).In 1945, after the Canadian Government had taken over Eldorado for •atomic energy reasons, the Mines Branch was called upon again, this time to help out by looking into ways and means of improving ore treatment methods for the mine at Great Bear Lake. A group of technical men was assembled to devote full attention to this work, which was known as the Eldorado Project.Three years later, in 1948, the Government decided to reopen the development and operation of uranium properties to private enterprise.Since it is a function of the Mines Branch to assisit private development of Canadian mineral resources, this new uranium policy made it important for the Branch to be in a position where it could provide up-to-date services, technical assistance, and information relating to treatment of radioactive ores, mineralogy of radioactive ores, and assay methods for radioactive ores.At the same time, .because of the demand for increased uranium production, lower grade ores had definitely come into the picture, ores that might be of decidedly lower grade than, say, Eldorado pitchblende, and of entirely different nature."

The word "line" has been used loosely for many forms of the common steel plant flux. For example, many people use the word "lime" for nigh calcium and dolomitic limestone, for high calcium and dolomitic quicklime (also called caustic lime, calcined lime; burnt lime, pulverized and pebble lime) and ;van for clinkered dolomite. Calcium hydroxide, also called slaked lime and hydrated lime, is called "lime" but is seldom used as a flux except when the quicklime air slakes in open boxes or bins. All of the above forms of "lime" are used in the steel plant. Calcium hydroxide is used for water treatment, acid neutralizing, and as a lubricant for wire drawing. All the other limes are used as fluxes in the sintering plant, blast furnace or steel producing furnaces. In the production of self-flux or super-flux sinter, high calcium and dolomitic limestone fines are used. Where quicklime fines are available, they may be added to the sinter mix also. The blast furnace uses both high calcium and/or dolomitic limestone. A few trials have been made using iron oxide stabilized dolomitic lime in an attempt to reduce coke consumption and to increase the production rate. The trials were very successful but would' not be economical, except in periods of coke shortages, with resulting extremely high coke cost and exceptionally high hot metal demand.

The present work aims at some process modifications in specified metallurgical processes, wherein CO2 can be used successfully as an oxidant for decarburization in steelmaking and applied in some non-ferrous metals production processes. During the decarburization of Cr-containing high alloyed steels, the present researchers investigated the possible use of CO2 instead of Ar-O2 mixture and could successfully decarburize the steel melt without significant loss of alloyed Cr to the slag phase. A mathematical model was developed based on the bubble formation accompanying the chemical reaction: C(molten steel)+ CO2(gas)= 2 CO(gas). The model predictions were tested by laboratory scale (1 kg) experiments carried out in an induction furnace and very good agreement between the model predictions and experimental results were observed. A national project has been sanctioned in China for the implementation of CO2 in decarburization of ferroalloys as well enable the addition of pig iron in the electric arc furnace process when the scrap supply is limited. New processes have been developed for the utilization of CO2 in the case of non-ferrous processes. A novel method of treatment of Al dross by leaching with water and capturing the evolved NH3(formed by the hydrolysis of AlN) has shown very promising results.

Hydrodynamics and mixing are fundamental to the operation of mineral process systems such as flotation cells and metal precipitation reactors. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique has been employed in the present work to study the hydrodynamics in a mixing vessel stirred with either a Rushton turbine or a pitched blade impeller. The multiple frame of reference (MFR) approach has been used to model both impellers. A draft tube was used only in the Rushton turbine stirred vessel. The flow profiles for the pitched blade impeller have been studied in three regions; below the impeller tip, at the middle of the tank, and near the liquid surface. The simulation results were compared with literature data obtained using a laser Doppler velocimetry in the three regions of the vessel, and it was found that the model predictions were better in the impeller region. There was a poor prediction of the experimental results in the region closer to the liquid surface; however, this was improved when the turbulence parameter (C2) in the k-e model was set to a higher value. The value of the impeller clearance at which the Rushton turbine generates an axial impeller type flow has been determined and it has been shown that, at this clearance, a draft tube can be used to enhance axial flow in a Rushton turbine stirred reactor.

Tungsten, a comparatively new metal, is one of the important strategic war materials. In peacetime, tungsten is widely used as a filament in elec¬tric lamps and electronic tubes and is a vital constituent of some of the most important industrial alloys. High-speed tool steel containing tungsten and stellite alloys containing cobalt, chromium, and tungsten are extremely hard and resistant to corrosion. These alloys and the tungsten carbides are unequaled as cutting tools and in other wear-resistant applications. They play a prominent role in the present era of mass production. Alloys containing tungsten resist oxidation at high temperatures and have been key alloys in the development of modern aircraft. The adaptability of tungsten to new uses is expanding, particularly in the high-temperature range. Domestic production of tungsten has come from a large number of deposits in 17 of the 49 States; but, of the total domestic output from 1900 to 1956, more than 80 percent was produced from mines in North Carolina, California, Colorado, and Nevada. The average tenor of the mined ore was less than 1 percent tungsten trioxide (W03).

Porphyry copper ores are frequently a source of low-grade gold ore, but gold in these ores is often associated with significant levels of cyanide-soluble copper. Cyanide leaching of such ores increases flowsheet complexity and operating costs, and requires thorough planning to satisfy environmental requirements for tailings disposal and mine closure. This paper presents a review of the chemistry of cyanide leaching of gold-copper porphyry ores, carbon adsorption phenomena and means of removing base metals from leach solution. The primary economic drivers behind the processing of such complex ores are also analyzed.

[This paper summarizes the more popular mineral valuation techniques being used by the dining industry, and attempts to demonstrate how they are Interrelated and where some are in error when compared to modern methods of financial analysis. The academic community and the larger and more sophisticated raining companies, have largely rejected the older valuation methods such as the, Hoskold and Morkill concepts and replaced them with "discounted cash flow" (DCF) techniques. The relevancy and usefulness of the older methods have been questioned primarily on the basis of their underlying assumptions that mining companies do not have numerous alternative investments and must use sinking funds deposited at market or ?safe" rates of return to recover the purchase price of mineral reserves. The ability to reinvest In numerous (often non-mining} alternative business ventures, the changing purchasing power of the dollar, corporate income and other taxes, depreciation and depletion allowances, and modern financial management practice, all mitigate against the continued use of the older valuation methods, especially for the larger mining companies. "The effect of rock joints is significant in characterizing dynamic behaviors of discontinuous rock masses. To reveal the relation between the transmission coefficient and the contact situation of the joint surface, an experimental study on stress wave propagation across an artificial rock joint was carried out using a modified Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) apparatus. All the bars and specimens were norite cored from the same site, and one surface of the specimen which contacted to the transmitted bar was sawn with a number of notches to simulate the artificial rough joint. According to a wave separation method, two strain gauges were mounted on each pressure bar at a specific spacing, then the incident, reflected and transmitted waves across the joints were obtained from the test data. It was found that the contact situation of the rock joint surface makes a different on the wave propagation. Finally comparisons of the transmission coefficients with different contact area ratios and different joint thicknesses were made respectively. The results show the effects of contact area ratio and thickness of joints on wave transmission.INTRODUCTIONJoints affect the dynamic mechanical behaviors of the rock masses significantly. When propagates across the rock masses, wave usually attenuates in amplitude and frequency due to the presence of the joint as a discontinuous interface in the rock masses. Rock joints are the main factor that affects the behaviors and properties of rock masses. Many researchers have focused on the mechanical properties of rock joints under quasi-static conditions. Nowadays, the effect of joint dynamic properties on wave propagation across rock masses is gradually taken into account in theoretical and numerical studies.The effective contact area, joint roughness, and properties of the asperities and filling materials have been found to influence the normal stiffness of joints (Bandis et al. 1983). As suggested by the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM), the roughness of the discontinuities can be generally characterized by large-scale “waviness” and small-scale “unevenness” (Brown 1981). Many researchers focused on the roughness of rock joints that affects the mechanical properties of rock masses and wave propagation. For example, Brown and Scholz (1985, 1986) presented theoretically and verified experimentally a closure model of contact between two random nominally flat elastic surfaces, which showed that the joint closure property depended both on the surface topography and material properties. Pyrak-Nolte et al. (1997) presented the quantitative aperture data for three-dimensional interconnected fracture networks, which were imbedded in intact opaque rock samples several centimeters in length, using x-ray computerized tomographic (CT) imaging. Fardin et al. (2001) systematically investigated the effect of scale on the surface roughness of rock joints and concluded that samples should be equal to or larger than the stationary limit for surface roughness to be accurately characterized on a laboratory scale or in the field. Zhao et al. (2006) conducted excellent ultrasonic tests across intact cement mortar specimens, singlefracture specimens, and two-fracture specimens."

The Bureau of Mines recently investigated dust generation and methane liberation during half-and full-web cutting at a double-drum shearer longwall face. This study was conducted to ascertain the health and safety aspects of wider web shearing at longwalls. Results from these underground tests showed that deeper web cutting reduced dust generation and methane liberation per ton of coal mined, while significantly improving shearer production rates. When cutting with the airflow (head-to-tail cut pass) full-web cutting decreased dust generation per ton by 16 pct at the shearer and 6 pct at the tailgate, with an increase in shearer production rate of 72 pct. Methane liberation per short ton also deere~sed by 36 pet at the shearer and 22 pct at the tailgate. Full-web cutting against the airflow (tail-to-head cut pass) decreased dust generation per ton by 41 pct at the shearer and 37 pct at the tail-gate over half-web cutting, with an increase in shearer production rate of 61 pct. Methane liberation per ton also decreased by 35 pct at the shearer and 41 pct at the tailgate. These improvements for full-web cutting are a reflection of improved cutting efficiency (less dust and methane produced from cutting) and less new face area exposed per ton of coal mined (less methane liberated from face per short ton of coal mined).

In 1947, a Korfmann universal shearing machine was installed in a mine in the Southern field of the Pennsylvania anthracite region. The machine was obtained from Germany by the Bureau of Mines after the close of World War II as a part of a program of experimental work to increase the output and lower the cost of anthracite, which the Bureau of Mines initiated in 1944 when an agreement was made with an anthracite-producing company for use of one of the company's mines as a testing ground for certain mechanical equipment procured or developed by the Bureau. A major objective is to develop a mechanical mining method that will increase the rate of advance and reduce the coat of development of coal gangways in steeply pitching seams. In addition to the time to be saved in driving these openings by machine, it is felt that further economies will be affected by making it possible to concentrate producing sections into smaller compass and that savings will ensue in supervision, maintenance, and time required for mining a section. A higher percentage extraction also is an objective. Test work covered by this report was concentrated on the power characteristics, maneuverability, effectiveness, and general qualities of the Korfmann machine in cutting coal, the cutting tests representing the first use of a machine of this kind in steep-pitch mining in the United States.

As part of its efforts to devise new and improved methods for recovering lithium from unconventional resources , the Bureau of Mines investigated a lime -gypsum- roast , water- leach technique for processing lithiumenriched ( 0.01-0.68 pct Li ) clays . This report presents the results of a study of the technical feasibility of extracting lithium from raw material representative of clay beds associated with the McDermitt Caldera complex in Nevada and Oregon . prepared from water used Pellets suitable for bench-scale roasting studies were mixtures of minus 200 -mesh clay , limestone , and gypsum , with as the pelletizing agent . Roasting pelletized charges at 900 ° to 1,000° C temperatures for 1- to 4-h periods produced calcines that leached readily , yielding water - soluble lithium sulfate ( Li₂SO4 ) . A 5-3-3 ( weight ratio ) mix of clay , limestone , and gypsum produced calcines with the best leaching characteristics . More than 91 pct of the contained lithium was extracted from pelletized mix batches roasted in covered refractory boats . Lithium recovery decreased to about 87 pct when the mix was roasted under dynamic conditions in a gas - fired rotary furnace . A reaction mechanism was postulated which indicated that dilution and loss of SO2 and oxygen in the combustion exhaust adversely affected the leachability of the dynamically roasted calcine .

FEW of us who waded ashore on the Norman beaches realized the importance of coal to a successful invasion. General Eisenhower and his staff had been aware of the essential need for coal and an able Solid Fuels Section had been set up under the direction of Colonel Robert P. Koenig, of Indiana. This organization met the requirements of the invading armies on their march to the Rhine. East of the Siegfried Line enemy territory, the Army Engineers were called upon for assistance. When the Engineers were advised that, in addition to their normal duties, they were to occupy and place in operation the coal mines in the Twelfth Army group area, plans were drawn up overnight and action was initiated immediately. The Sixth Engineer Special Brigade, a versatile outfit which made a notable record D-Day on Omaha Beach, was selected to handle the operation. Within 48 hours of the new assignment an advance command post was set up cm the west bank of the Rhine at Homberg, just below German-held Duisburg. The 368th Engineer General Service Regiment was assigned to the Brigade, and the British 44th Pioneer Group, including specialist personnel, was also attached. "INTRODUCTIONHydrogen sulphide is probably the most toxic gas associated with crude oil. Hydrocarbon (petroleum) vapors themselves are harmful to the human system, but hydrogen sulphide, when present, is usually more important from the standpoint of health and safety. These conclusions were reached in an investigation of the toxic gases encountered in the transportation end refining of high-sulphur petroleum. The results of that investigation are presented in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 23l. although the writers of Bulletin 231 paid no direct attention to the production of oil in the field, they attributed to hydrogen sulphide reports of accidents caused by gas in the oil fields of Mexico.During the development of oil fields in Texas, a ""poison gas"" was encountered that constituted a decided health and safety hazard. The present report discusses an investigation of this gas made in July, 1926.The major portion of the investigation was conducted in the Panhandle field of Texas, but the study also includes the Big Lake and McCamey fields.Scope of WorkThe work undertaken in each field included:Examination of the gas-coming from representative wells at various locations in the field; also analyses of the gas-air mixtures to which the workmen were or might be exposed.Observation of symptoms of poisoning and severity of these symptoms."

A requirement for geological controls during orebody modeling results from the recognition of heterogeneous geological characteristics and/or abrupt variations in orebody geometries. While purely statistical methods are often sufficient for modeling uniform homogeneous deposits, and the only recourse for many that are extremely complex, geological interpretations can be extremely valuable as controls during the modeling process. The advent of relatively inexpensive, sophisticated graphical computer hardware and software has focused considerable attention on the three dimensional visualization capabilities now available to the mining industry. Orebody geometries can be easily imported into many systems as wireframe or solid models, rendered with shading and color, rotated in space, exploded into composite parts, zoomed into and otherwise displayed to awe any audience. The requirements for an initially meaningful, accurate, geological interpretation are sometimes lost when the focus is on an apparently complex, highly resolved end product. Details of the initial data and sensitivities of modeling assumptions are not always sufficiently scrutinized. Software capabilities have extended the geopoetic license into three dimensions. The new tools, while greatly facilitating model construction and rendering, have done little to expedite basic data preparation and analysis. This paper attempts to briefly summarize the purpose and method of the construction of geological controls. The examples selected are from wire­framing and block modeling; application software processes commonly used in the mining industry today.
