The Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO) was formed in 1994 to promote development and adoption of international standards for estimation and reporting of exploration results, mineral resources and mineral reserves. The CRIRSCO standards have been accepted by most mining companies and professional societies worldwide. Market regulators from Australia, South Africa and Canada require that these standards be followed when releasing public information. Among these requirements is the use of specific definitions for what constitutes exploration results, mineral resources and mineral reserves. If such information is publicly disclosed in must be estimated by a Competent or Qualified Person. In the United States of America, public disclosures are regulated by the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The SEC does not recognise the CRIRSCO guidelines, and some of the SEC requirements for public release of information are materially different from those applicable in other countries. The CRIRSCO definitions and the Competent Person requirements are reviewed and compared with those of the SEC. The organisation of the SEC and its rule making process are briefly discussed. Ongoing efforts to bring the US regulatory requirements closer to those applicable in other countries are presented, as well as other activities that CRIRSCO is entertaining with the United Nations, the International Accounting Standard Board and other international organisations to reach the objective of worldwide standardisation of reporting procedures.

Information Circular (IC) 9453 Roof falls continue to be the greatest single safety hazard faced by underground coal miners. During1996-99, 44 coal miners lost their lives in rock falls and nearly 2,400 were injured. In addition, nearly 6,000 non injury roof collapses were reported. Roof supports are installed to protect the miners, but support system failures contributed to most of these incidents. Reducing the terrible toll taken by ground falls continues to be a major goal of research by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).During 2000-01, NIOSH conducted a series of open industry briefings on New Technology for Coal Mine Roof Support in Norton, VA, Charleston, WV, Evansville, IN, Tuscaloosa, AL, Price, UT, Glenwood Springs, CO, and Washington, PA. Drawing on many years of research undertaken by the NIOSH Pittsburgh and Spokane Research Laboratories, the proceedings describe what types of coal mine roof support are available, how they work, and when they should be used. The major subjects covered include roof bolts, standing roof supports, cable supports, and longwall shields. Some special topics are also addressed, including an analysis of roof fall accident statistics, techniques for better skin control, and material handling considerations. The proceedings volume also contains information on several important new technologies, which are described for the first time, e.g., guidelines for selecting roof bolt

WHEN plants decay in a peat bog the woody parts form a brown pasty mass, or peat muck, largely soluble in. alkalis. This brown matter has been termed "ulmin." The same material, but commonly black in color, is found in coal, and there is evidence of the similarity between the material forming the main bulk of the coal and the bulk of the more recently decayed material in peat bogs. The. more recent or low-rank coals, such as lignite, little removed from the peat stage, contain notable percentages of alkali-soluble ulmins, but the percentage decreases with increased, degree of coalification and is negligible in bituminous or higher rank coals. The determination of the alkali-soluble ulmins in any coal gives, therefore, an indication, of its degree of coalification or rank. Coals which contain few or no ulmins soluble in alkalis do contain ulmins which can be rendered soluble by oxidation. The higher the rank of the coal, the more difficult it is to oxidize the insoluble ulmins and make them soluble. High-rank coals can be differentiated by oxidation tests on the, insoluble ulmins; but low-rank coals can be characterized by both their soluble and insoluble ulmins. This paper deals with the determination and significance of the alkali-soluble ulmins, present, as such in- the coal. The chemical nature and composition of ulmins are not discussed.

Low-density explosives have been developed with trials being conducted for over 20 years and yet have still only gained limited market acceptance despite producing some very promising results. The biggest concern with industry acceptance has been disbelief that a product with lower density than the ANFO benchmark could fragment anything but the weakest of strata. Trials have been carried out with products such as diluted ANFO, low-density ammonium nitrate (AN) and various other mixes, although it has been only recently that low-density explosives have been accepted as a serious alternative to traditional products such as ANFO and heavy ANFO. The recent uptake of low-density products has been the result of several key factors: the current resources boom forcing AN supply issues, the development of new handling techniques, and a far better understanding of the utilisation of such products. This paper highlights the benefits of low-density products available in the market and focuses on the situations where low-density explosives can provide the end user with benefits that would otherwise be achieved through more time consuming methods. Through correct implementation, low-density explosives can provide the blast designer with another option when looking at the optimum method of breaking the rock. This while still controlling the other limiting factors such as cost, environmental impacts (noise, vibration, dust and fumes), coal damage and safety (stable walls).

When Mr Carnegie made his gift, "for the erection of a suitable union home" for the engineering societies, United Engineering Trustees, Inc (then United Engineering Society) was chartered under Chapter 703, Laws of the State of New York, 1904, for "the advancement of the engineering arts and sciences in all their branches, and to maintain a free public engineering library" The Corporation was further empowered to acquire real and personal property and to use, maintain and occupy it, with the provision that any building erected by the Corporation shall be used perpetually as a meeting place and headquarters for the Founder Societies Thus the Carnegie gift realized the ideal of bringing the engineering societies together under one roof, and the Corporation through its members nominated in equal numbers by the four Founder Societies had the necessary authority to act for the Founder Societies in their joint interests in owning and operating for them not only Engineering Societies Building, but in the course of time, Engineering Societies Library, and

The study of neutrinos?particles infinitesimally smaller than atoms?would be significantly advanced if a deep underground facility were available that would filter out unwanted cosmic radiation. Encouraging progress has been made in satisfying the criteria for such a facility with the selection of the Homestake Mine in Lead, SD, by the National Underground Laboratory Committee as the recommended site for a National Underground Science Laboratory (NUSL). The Homestake Mine is America?s oldest and deepest underground mine, and its well-maintained infrastructure to depths of 2438 m below the surface makes the mine an excellent site for such a laboratory. The investigation reported here is an initial study of the stability of the first of the proposed chambers. A cylindrical room with a dome-shaped roof and floor was analyzed in three dimensions using the finite-difference program FLAC3D. The results were compared to recommended support requirements based on Barton?s Tunneling Quality Index, Q. Based on model results and observations from previous mining studies, large rooms with 50-m roof spans can be constructed and will remain stable at 2141 m below the surface in the Poorman Formation when the rock is reinforced with cable bolts. Construction may be possible at lower levels in the Yates Formation if more extensive laboratory strength tests confirm initial results.

This paper presents the theoretical derivation of the distribution equation for single fracture. The equation is shown to accord with experiment. Several empirical size-distribution equations have been proposed to describe the size of broken materials. Among them are the Gaudin-Schuhmann equation and the Rosin-Rammler equation.3*4 The Gaudin-Schuhmann equation relates the relative fraction of undersize to relative size —. In this relationship Mo is the total weight of crushed sample, M(x) the weight of undersize contained, x the size considered, K a quantity called the size modulus, which together with the slope parameter, m, characterizes the product. The slope parameter is usually close to unity. The Rosin-Rammler equation relates the same relative fraction of undersize to the relative size modulus by an equation of different form In this relationship, e is the base of natural logarithms. In the fine size-range when m is unity both equations give Gilvarry and Berstrom have sought a size distribution equation having a sound theoretical basis. They have come to an equation taking into account the effect of volume, surface and edge flaws in fragmentation. If the effect of the volume and surface flaws is neglected, the equation taking only edge flaws into account has the form of the Rosin-Rammler equation. FuRnace-men of the present day agree very nearly as to the best cooling-devices for the protection of blast-furnace hearths and boshes, and the best location of the cooling-system in the brick-work for the maintenance of favorable furnacelines throughout the blast. The replaceable bronze and copper plates are practically faultless; and there seems to be no reason why a furnace-hearth and bosh should not be held in good condition, by intelligent management and the use of replaceable plates, for a period several times the length of the average blast of to-day. While furnace-men have taken these .precautions to protect the hearth and bosh beyond the life of the lining, the portion of the lining above the mantle has been partly protected by some and wholly neglected by others. Some would not construct a furnace without mantle-plates, and others would not construct a furnace with them. In most cases, furnace-men have either trusted to Providence or to the bosh-plates for the continuance of favorable working-conditions above the mantle, and the prolongation of the life of the lining; consequently furnaces are constantly blown out for repairs to the lining, or for relining, when the hearth and bosh are in good enough condition to last through another blast. The quite diverse backgrounds of the authors and their mutual interest in reducing transportation costs has produced some interesting innovations. A few words about their background will tell the reason for this joint paper. . . One is a shipping executive with a background of shipowning, ship management, ship and cargo brokerage and chartering, and most facets of the steamship industry, both American and International. The other is a chemical engineer, thoroughly brought up in the American chemical and mineral industries, with several top managerial positions behind him. They began cooperating when U.S. Borax was contemplating a change in its export shipping program and studying the freight cost for shipping borax from The mines in the Californian desert to Europe, and eastern U. S. markets. In the 20 Mule Team days, borax was exported in 50 pound bags. In 1960 it was still shipped in 50 pound hags. Three main products were shipped: two were anhydrous, and all three were sensitive to impurities. The products were bagged at the plant in the Mohave Desert, and shipped about 150 miles by rail to the port in Los Angeles. From Los Angeles, shipment was made by Conference steamship lines at Conference rates. Anyone who has shipped bagged material to Europe by steamer knows that the tab is anywhere from $20 to $30 or more per ton.

The Gibralter Mines Ltd. complex is 61 km (38 miles) north of Williams Lake in central British Columbia, Fig. 1. The discovery of these deposits evolved in stages such that each stage revealed a bigger piece of the elephant. When the elephant was mostly revealed, Placer Development Ltd. brought the property into production. Although Gibralter is aporphyry copper deposit, it is certainly not a typical one. Copper and minor molybdenum mineralization occur in a foliated and saussuritized quartz diorite. Ore bodies tend to be tabular in form because foliation exerts a major control on localizing mineralization. A generalized geologic map of the Gibralter-Pollyanna area is shown in Fig. 2. Mineralization was first identified in 1917 in the Pollyanna area. Several shallow pits were sunk on flashy, but low grade, lenticular quartz veins. Duval Corp. made the initial commercial discovery, the Pollyanna ore body, on what were then called the Pollyanna claims. These claims, staked by R.C. Glen and C. Gennis in 1963, were the first to be optioned by Duval in British Columbia in October 1964. Placer Development joined Duval in late 1966 as a 50% joint venture partner, and after optioning the adjoining Gibralter claims, proceeded to evaluate and develop the four ore bodies that make up the Gibralter deposit. The Gibralter claims south of the Pollyanna claims provided the name for the Gibralter deposit.

It is a well-known fact to all Bessemer steel manufacturers using a blooming mill, that ingots show large cracks in the first few passes of the rolls, which, in the following ones, do not always roll up satisfactorily. This deficiency in the quality of the product is generally called "red-shortness," though, in the writer's opinion, mostly unjustly so. Different explanations for the said peculiarity are given by the leading authorities, each works selecting one element as a special scapegoat for the inferior quality of the ingot. The sulphur is generally first charged as being the principal cause of all mischief in this direction ; then, after ascertaining that sulphur is not higher than the average, and sometimes lower in the very worst heats, silicon has to bear its share of abuse. How and why silicon should affect the working qualities of the metal, the writer could never precisely learn, but is convinced that the doctrine of its pernicious influence is an established one with many. In cases where silicon failed to explain everything, resort was taken to calcium, aluminum, and some other known or unknown elements, without settling the difficulty; and lastly, when the skill of the chemist became exhausted, " practical men " came to the same conclusion, which many leading blast-furnace managers had arrived

Capital, as represented by mineral resources, is being exhausted rapidly without possibility of identical replacement. The public must be discouraged from thinking-why worry about the bank balance so long as there are plenty of blank checks? Instead of each man, woman, and child being owners of a mineral capital of $89,000 as former Secretary Ickes once stated, they are really the guardians of a mineral reserve which, when harvested, cannot be reproduced. The proper use of this material is the basis of modern civilization and military power. The best American institutions cannot be maintained or transmitted to our children unless this trust is guarded. It is unfortunate that more attention has not been focused on the fact that this country is headed for a have-not status in the family of great nations if some- thing is not done to preserve its mineral heritage. It is the privilege of the United States now to champion and implement democracy because it is industrialized and can get at its raw materials. A high price is being paid every day in mineral depletion for the privilege. No one can eat his cake and have it too. The United States still must face world-wide economic competition and, perhaps, World War III. In the final analysis all wealth comes from the ground, whether plant, animal, or mineral. Value is in-

Recent observations on grain boundary movements in sihcon iron have indicated the possibility of studying grain growth phenomena in two-grain specimens in which several variables affecting growth are readily controlled. These variables are (1) the energy per unit area (?) in the grain boundary, (2) the orientation relationship of the two grains, and (3) the radius of curvature (7) of the moving boundary. Ideally, one grain A should be a narrow rectangular parallelepiped adjacent to a second grain ß as shown two dimensionally in Fig 1. Such a two-grain group becomes unstable when one end of grain A is shaped according to the dotted line. Since the width w of grain A remains constant during growth of grain B, T should also remain constant. The other vari- ables mentioned above can be controlled in the preparation of each two-grain specimen.l,2,3 For a parLicular orientation of each grain, is not necessarily fixed; ? may also depend on the orientation of the grain boundary, but this may be controlled to some degree. MODERN mine maps are largely a product of evolution. The first mine maps used in the west were old composite maps with all the levels plotted on the same sheet. The composite was widely used and occasionally is seen even now. This type of underground map had serious limitations. One was the development of an indecipherable complex of workings around steep shafts. The other limitation was that of size; often when a working passed the limit of the sheet no map was made of it. These old maps have been superseded by the single level maps, laid out in squares or rectangles which can be expanded indefinitely in all directions. This produces a system capable of unlimited expansion in three dimensions, with all the detail of every working clearly marked and legible. A good set of mine maps should be laid out in blocks, all blocks of equal size. Each block should be limited by plane coordinates without overlap on bounding map quadrangles. At all times the direction of North should be indicated as an aid in remembering bearings of underground workings. It is desirable that all maps of whatever scale be plotted on sheets of uniform size. In fact, it is possible to make nearly all underground maps, surface maps and sections on sheets of the same size.

It has recently been shown' that epitaxial films of silicon carbide deposited on silicon single crystals possess desirable properties for semiconductor applications. There is one apparent disadvantage to such a system, however; since epitaxial deposition is a high-temperature process, it can result in plastic deformation of the silicon substrate. The accompanying Berg-Barrett X-ray diffraction photographs reveal plastic deformation in two silicon semiconductor crystals which occurred when the crystals were coated with an epitaxial layer of silicon carbide at 1150°C. Due to differences in thermal expansion between the silicon substrate and the epitaxial silicon carbide, the silicon was subjected to stresses while still in the plastic temperature range. Both crystals shown were 0.7 in. in diam and 0.0055 in. thick. The crystals were sliced from a larger crystal so that their polar axes were parallel to the [ill] direction. After cutting, the crystals were polished with diamond paste, and etched in HC1 vapor to remove surface damage re- sulting from the cutting and polishing operations. This provided clean, damage-free surfaces on which to deposit the silicon carbide. Figs. l(a) and l(b) are reflection and transmission photographs, respectively, of the same crystal. NATURAL petroleum gas occurring in the oil-bearing reservoirs is found to exist either as free gas associated with the oil and/or in solution in the oil. In some virgin fields practically no free gas is encountered under the reservoir conditions of pressure and temperature, although in other fields a considerable section of the ``pay" horizon is occupied by free gas. In other words, a given oil field may or may not have a gas cap before the exploitation takes place. However, when the reservoir pressure is reduced to a point below the critical saturation pressure by withdrawals of fluids from the producing formation, the gas dissolved in the oil inevitably begins to come out of solution and becomes free gas. Under the con-trolled methods of production and drilling, a portion of this gas is pro-duced with the oil to the surface and a portion of it remains within the reservoir to accumulate at higher structural levels toward which it migrates by virtue of its low specific gravity. The rate of growth of a gas cap in a-given structure depends primarily upon the rate of decline in the reservoir pressure. If the rate of pressure decline is rapid, the gas cap likewise will grog rapidly. On the other hand, shrinkage in the gas-cap area was noted in some fields in which reservoir pressures were increasing.

CLAMER, * PHILADELPHIA, PA.-Unfortunately, prior to the war no serious attention was given to the conservation of tin, notwithstanding that this country is practically dependent upon outside sources for its entire tin supply. Tin is of vital importance in many industries, but it is surprising how many and how excellent are its substitutes when we become acquainted with them. Tin has always been a relatively high-priced metal, and it is part of the human attitude to associate high prices with high standards; it is not until the price of a commodity becomes well-nigh prohibitive that we hunt for substitutes, because the idea of substitution seems always to involve an assumption that the substitute must necessarily be inferior. The history of the development of bearing bronzes is a striking example of this policy. In the early clays, copper-tin alloys were almost universally used, the idea then being prevalent, which is still held by many, that a bearing to resist wear must be hard, and the harder the better. The favorite bronze bearing contained 90 per cent. copper and 10 per cent. tin; frequently, in service which was considered severe, even higher proportions of tin were used.. There are a number of different mechanisms by which wetlands can immobilise the metals in mine drainage. Here, the biogeochemistry behind four of these mechanisms (adsorption, biological uptake, precipitation as oxyhydroxides, and precipitation as sulfides) is discussed from the perspective of sustainability. Moreover, treatment wetlands are considered as part of a larger system, also taking into account the source of the drainage and various aspects of the receiving waters. The biogeochemistry of different metal immobilisation mechanisms in wetlands determines what kind of drainage can be treated with success, and it also places an upper limit on the amount of metal that can be removed from the water phase per unit of time. This has important implications for the design of treatment wetlands, perhaps particularly in colder climates. A thorough understanding of the prevailing biogeochemical processes is essential when attempting to establish treatment wetlands after the closing of a mine. If a wetland is to be used as a sustainable æwalk-awayÆ solution, the anticipated change in treatment efficiency over time (as pollutants accumulate in the system) must be considered in relation to the expected changes in drainage quality. It is also important that the total metal immobilisation capacity of the wetland is not exceeded and that the integrity of the system is maintained, in order to minimise liberation of previously immobilised metals.

Exxon Minerals Co. was exploring for mineral deposits in Precambrian terranes of the US portion of the Lake Superior region in the late 1960s. Exploration drilling and other activities had been concentrated on massive sulfide prospects in northeastern Minnesota, but general exploration studies and competitor scouting were conducted in other areas of the region. These activities drew attention to Wisconsin in 1969 when it became apparent that Bear Creek Mining Co. had made a discovery near Ladysmith in the northwestern part of the state. Observation of their drill hole pattern suggested that a massive sulfide deposit, since named the Flambeau deposit (Schwenk, 1977), had been found. With this background, Exxon initiated an exploration program for Precambrian massive sulfide deposits in northern Wisconsin in 1970 (Figs. 1 and 2). Northern Wisconsin is extensively mantled by Pleistocene glacial drift and bedrock outcrop is sparse. Other than iron mines in the extensive iron formations along the Wisconsin-Michigan border and Jackson County, no significant mineral deposits were known in the Wisconsin portion of the Precambrian Shield until the discovery of the Flambeau deposit. Until the mid-1970s, the only specific published literature on the Wisconsin Precambrian consisted of old outcrop locations and descriptions in journals of the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey (Chamberlain, 1882; [ ] Weidman, 1907; Hotchkiss, 1915) and the summary maps of Dutton and Bradley (1970).
