Experience has shown that the E-Type multiple indicator kriging (MIK) estimation technique often works well for resource estimation in stockwork mineralisation that contains a mixture of high and low-grade mineralisation types that are difficult or impossible to separate spatially. E-Type MIK, like ordinary kriging (OK) is a smoothing estimator and where data is sparse can result in estimates of grade tonnage curves that do not reflect the true block variability at selective mining unit (SMU) scale. The rank and replace (RR) estimation methodology is designed to reproduce both local block accuracy and true block variability at SMU scale and has shown good results when used with highly skewed unimodal diffusive style mineralisation. This paper examines the use of RR with mosaic style mineralisation typically found in stockworks via a case study using real data from Newcrest’s Telfer West Dome deposit. Resource level estimation results for ordinary kriging (OK), E-Type MIK and RR are compared to close spaced grade control models as the reference reality.Results show that stationarity requirements and declustering can severely impact on the usefulness of the rank and replace technique and that it should only be used where trends are not too strong and data are relatively uniformly spaced. This does not rule out its application to stockwork or mosaic style deposits. However, in this case, the presence of trends and different data densities requires the non-stationary domain to be further broken down into sub domains for the RR technique to be effective.CITATION:Kentwell, D and Finn, D, 2017. Large variations in flotation characteristics of minerals have been observed in winter and summer in plant practices as a result of changes in pulp temperature. Variations in temperature may affect the quality for pulp and related process water through changes in dissociation of different chemical species within the pulp, as well as changing in gas and metal hydroxide solubility, reagent adsorption and its stability on mineral surfaces, water/pulp viscosity, etc. All of these affect the flotation characteristics of specific mineral to some degree or another. It has been observed in Cu-Pb-Zn and/or Pb-Zn sulfides flotation that sphalerite (ZnS) flotation is strongly affected by changes in pulp temperature. Plant practices have shown that at the both low, e.g., T <10-12°C, and high, e.g., T > 60°C, the recovery for copper activated sphalerite is dramatically dropped. Within this paper the effect of pulp temperature on flotation characteristics of sphalerite is brought into considerations and laboratory flotation tests were conducted in conjunction with surface and solution chemistry analysis to understand the effect of temperature on sphalerite recovery. The effect of temperature seems to be complex since the temperature affects both the physical (hydrodynamics) and chemical phenomena in the flotation cell. In fact all sub-processes in flotation, i.e., collision, attachment and detachment, are affected by changing in temperature. Experimental results indicating that at alkaline pH values, e.g., 8.5 to 10.5, the recovery for copper-activated sphalerite is dramatically reduced when temperature is below 10-12°C, which is in agreement with plant practice at Boliden?s Garpenberg plant in Sweden. However, results from other studies indicated that the zinc recovery is also considerably decreased at high pulp temperatures, i.e., 62°C and above.

"The financial model is an integral component of any project evaluation based on mineral resources, ore reserves and (at least internally) exploration targets. Given the unity of purpose for preparing financial models for project evaluation purposes, the diversity of both format and content of the finalised models is surprising. Many models are prepared by staff or consultants who are comfortable with a particular format that may be used for other purposes, such as budget preparation or financial reporting. It is natural in these situations that the practitioner will take these models and adapt them to the purpose. The end result may or may not succeed in providing a clear, accurate and sufficiently detailed view of the project’s economic viability.When preparing a model, the practitioner should be cognisant of the interpretation and review, or audit, process. The auditor may be a consultant or employee of a bank, potential equity provider or of the project sponsor itself. Depending upon the scale of the project and the level of participation of the entity that the auditor represents, the financial model will be interrogated more or less rigorously. In any event, the end user will require the model to permit easy change of inputs and will wish to confirm that such change is appropriately and thoroughly transmitted throughout.Accordingly, there are some ‘dos and don’ts’ that can be readily applied in the creation of the financial model that will greatly assist the end user, not just in the change of inputs, but also in reviewing the model’s integrity. A couple of years ago, one of the major television networks produced a series on the environment. One episode in the series dealt with the nation&apos;s solid waste problem and some of the research being done to solve it. It was interesting to listen to one researcher who was attempting to develop a glass that when broken would dissolve in water. It was said that using this glass would eliminate over 100 million tons of solid wastes each year. At first glance, it would appear that this research-effort would make a significant contribution to environmental pollution control; however, if one pauses to consider the water, he can see that this solution to the solid waste problem may well contribute to a water pollution problem. The dissolved material must either end up in our surface streams or be removed in waste treatment systems. Either alternative may have a more adverse effect on the environment than the original problem. With today&apos;s emphasis on the environment, it is important that the effects of our activities be studied in depth. Then, by properly planning the activity, the adverse effects can be minimized. The coal mining industry 100 years ago was in the same boat, as our glass maker, is today. Unfortunately, it too failed to consider all the effects of its activities and as a result, in Pennsylvania, there are over 5000 miles of streams adversely affected by coal mine drainage. The situation is improving, however, because mine operators are beginning to recognize and accept the methods for controlling coal mine drainage. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the measures for the control of coal mine drainage and to set forth the factors that affect these controls.

The management of wear surfaces in mining operations has remained largely unchanged since the inception of mining. Sacrificial wear liners are installed on the inside of chutes, hoppers and other equipment used to transfer bulk ore to protect the asset from abrasive wear caused by the flow of material. These liners are generally replaced at fixed intervals which may be determined based on historical wear rates or may be driven by other maintenance requirements for that asset. This approach does not always yield satisfactory results, especially for critical assets where the impact of downtime on production can be substantial. For such assets, a condition-based maintenance strategy has the potential to significantly increase productivity and reduce the total cost of ownership associated with the asset. However, for such a strategy to be successful, timely information on the actual condition (remaining thickness) of the wear liners is essential. This paper describes the development and implementation of a wear monitoring system that can be used to remotely and continuously report on remaining liner material thickness in real time. It details some of the challenges that were overcome when developing the system, including the design of a patented thickness measuring system that can be used in a variety of liner materials and is tolerant to the presence of ore on the wear surface. The paper also explains how a cloud-based approach enables data from the wear sensors to be integrated into external systems such as a data historian, which has been demonstrated through a collaborative project with one of the largest iron ore producers in the Pilbara. This ability to combine real time liner thickness information with other data sources, such as throughput, provides the foundation for the transition to a condition-based maintenance strategy.

"Since 2005, longwall coal mine operators in Pennsylvania (US) have been required to collect extensive hydrologic and biological data to document pre- and post-mining conditions of aquatic resources (streams and wetlands) overlying the subsidence control plan areas. Continued operation of the longwall mine is dependent upon empirical data demonstrating that the undermined aquatic resources have either been maintained or restored to an accepted range of pre-mining conditions. This study used quantitative hydrologic methods and comparative biological metrics to examine response of aquatic resources to longwall subsidence at the Bailey Mine located in Greene County, Pennsylvania. This study analyzed data from over 25 miles of streams and over 8 acres of wetlands that traverse the 4,779-acre study area. Hydrologic analysis of flow intermittency suggested that there are variable degrees of change to headwater streams immediately following mining; however, the majority of the effects are reversible through streamflow mitigation measures. Furthermore, the post-mining discharge from streams can be restored to within the range of pre-mining conditions the majority of the time. Biological assessments showed that greater than 95% of assessed stream length has maintained its ability to support benthic macroinvertebrate communities following mining and intervention (i.e., mitigation). Comparative metrics of the benthic macroinvertebrate communities showed that the biological community in 48 of the 50 sample sites is being maintained or restored across both high- and low-gradient streams. The effectiveness of intervention was further substantiated by the similarity in recovery times between streams having no intervention (median = 2.1 years, 95th percentile = 4.9 years) and streams with intervention, when recovery times were measured from the date of the intervention (median = 1.7 years, 95th percentile = 4.7 years). Changes to individual wetlands were observed between the pre- and post-mining assessments, but cumulatively a net gain of 7% in wetland acreage was realized. Hydrologic assessments were used to infer whether there was a potential that streams had been affected by mining; however, the ultimate test of stream recovery is based on biological metrics that establish the relative quality of the biological communities following mining. Overall, the hydrologic balance is being protected and the aquatic life use of streams is being maintained within the Bailey Mine’s subsidence control plan areas."

This paper (1) presents new data on the use of horizontal curves to optimize the alignment of belt conveyors. The operating concept of a horizontal curve is simple. As an element of the belt passes through the curve, it is motivated to drift toward the center of the curve by unbalanced tension forces in the belt. This lateral drift is resisted by the forces of friction and gravity, which in turn can be stated as a function of drift. Resisting forces, as a function of drift, are stated in terms of variables such as the amount of load on the belt, and parameters such as the trough angle, tilt angle, and super elevation angle, and number of rolls in the idler. The trick is to determine that the belt will drift to a position of equilibrium within predictable limits, without physically constraining the edge of the belt. In practice this prediction is not easy to make without the aid of a computer. The motivating force is easy to calculate, but its value is continually changing throughout the angle subtended by the curve arc. The resisting forces are constant throughout the curve for a given drift and load condition, but the calculations are very complex. Data in this paper will assist the conveyor designer in making preliminary calculations for horizontal curves. Presented is the equation for calculating the motivating force, and a family of curves that show the resisting force as a function of lateral drift for some commonly encountered conveyor design criteria.

SYNOPSIS Tribute is paid to J.S. MacArthur and the Forrest brothers for their invention. The opinion is expressed that the successful application of their process, not only saved the gold-mining industry on the Witwatersrand from stag¬nation for an indefinite but probably prolonged period, but also made a major contribution to the economic growth of the country in the twentieth century. A background is given of the activities of prominent chemists who researched the solubility of gold in cyanide solution prior to the MacArthur-Forrest invention. An account is given of the invention and patenting of the cyanidation process, and of the golden rule that the patentees laid down for themselves, which came close to wrecking the invention. The South African gold-mining scene from the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand in 1886 up to 1890 is sketched. An account is given of how, when unoxidized ores were first encountered, the recovery efficiency dropped alarmingly, gold shares were sold on an unprecedented scale, and doom and despondency seized the town of Johannesburg. The complete turnabout in the fortunes of the South African gold-mining industry after the introduction of the cyanidation process in 1890, the steady rate of increase in production after the Anglo-Boer War, and its effect on the South African economy are described. A brief look is taken at the effect of gold mining on secondary industry. The deportment of the gold that is not dissolved from the ore by the cyanidation process is illustrated. Some thoughts are expressed on what can be done to increase the gold recovered by cyanidation.

"Aqueous oxidation of phosphite ions to phosphate ions with dissolved oxygen was examined at 80° C and pH 4.5 mainly from the stichiometric point of view. Dissolved oxygen alone can not oxidize sodilim phosphite in aqueous solution, but when sulfur dioxide is coexistent, cooperative oxidation for both sulfite and phosphite can occur in aqueous solution. Sulfur dioxide itself is well known as a reducing agent, but it also reacts as an oxidation-promoting agent for other species under a certain condition. So sulfur dioxide is· a promising cheap reagent for waste phosphite processing.IntroductionIn a liquid-phase oxidation reaction using the dissolved oxygen gas, the eoexistence of a copper salt is required generally. Recently, it was reported that the oxidation reaction progressed by using mixed gas of sulfur dioxide and oxygen without the copper catalysis, and the attention has been collected1·3). The present authors also noticed the phenomenon since the early time and have been studying on the reaction mechanism of sulfur dioxide in liquid phase oxidation 4l. It was found that; by using the SO2-O2 mixed gas, the oxidation of phosphite ions to phosphate ions proceeded efficiently in sulfuric acid solutions. In the present report, the applicability of SO2-O2 mixed gas as a cheap oxidizing agent to the industrial processing of the waste solution of electroless nickel· plating is investigated. Filtration of hot (60°C) supersaturated zinc sulphate solution (sp gr 1.540) from slimy leach residues at the electrolytic zinc plant of Sullivan Mining Co., Kellogg, Idaho, is de- scribed. Separation of liquids and solids in the finished leach is by Burt filters modified to meet conditions of high-acid, high-density process for electrolytic zinc. Operating characteristics of the Burt filter on this pulp are presented.

This paper discussed the reaction kinetics of the reduction of industrial phosphate pellets for P4 production. In the reduction process of various phosphate ores, the following parameters were investigated: Diffusion of the phosphorus oxide and other gaseous products from the reaction mixture after having been reduced on the reductant (coke) surface. Influence of silica on reaction kinetics. Temperature influence. Influence of mineralogy and morphology (different ores). Particle size influence of silica and coke. Experiments were carried out in a vertical tube furnace with 2 ores, 2 types of silica and one type of coke. Selected experimental conditions simulated furnace conditions. The following conclusions could be made: Reaction rate increases with the addition of SiO2 into the pellet. The reaction rate increases above 1350°C (melting temperature of the slag). Mixing different ore types in the pellets leads to differences in reduction kinetics. Particle size of the coke particles influence reduction kinetics. The amount of slag formation is influenced by silica addition, coke size and temperature.

Dewatering of a -0.5 mm fine coal has been studied extensively. Deep cleaning requires however fine grinding, and dewatering of such ultrafine products presents a great challenge. Several coal samples finely ground and characterized by different wettabilities have b.een used in the filtration tests. Vacuum and press filters have been employed. In this paper only the results obtained with different flocculants (totally hydrophobic. semi-hydrophobic and hydrophilic polymers) are included. The results reveal the effect of coal surface properties and flocculant type on filtration of ultrafine coal.

The Quebec Cartier Mining Company produces iron concentrate for twelve months of the year from Port Cartier. This J>Ort is designed to handle ship varying in size from 3,000 to 100,000 d.w.t., requiring 50 feet of water at low tide. The harbour was built on shore for reasons of economy and layout, after considering many more conventional offshore designs. It provides for heavy oil bunkering, tanker off-loading, a heavy lift derrick and freight handling, besides ship loading and mooring. The weather for the previous fifty years was studied to enable wind and wave conditions to be accurately assessed for design purposes, and to determine probable lost time due to adverse weather conditions through-out the year. The first ship to be loaded was 60,000 d.w.t.; the second, 20,000 d.w.t. The latter entered the harbour after dark, under its own power, following a tug through the partly dredged narrow entrance. Large ships use tug assistance. Ships may leave the loading berth with the other berths occupied.

Increased awareness of a healthy work environment is common to all industries and the stone industry is no exception. The presence of operating diesel equipment, welding, stone production blasting, and silica dust in a working environment all contribute to air quality issues in underground stone mines. Particularly recognized is the exposure of workers to diesel particulate matter (DPM). Recent regulations call for a DPM standard of 160TC ug/m3 (TC = Total Carbon). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted research to improve the ventilation of these mines and consequently reduce the exposure of workers to harmful airborne contaminants. The results have shown that the ventilation of underground stone mines can be significantly enhanced using improved ventilation controls and techniques. Large-opening stone mines present specialized ventilation challenges because their entries are much larger than in other types of mines. Most stone mines have entries about 40 feet wide and up to 30 feet high, with bench areas that may extend even higher. These large entries present the positive opportunity to move large air quantities at relatively low mine fan pressures resulting in lower fan horsepower and reduced operating costs. However, the difficulty in ventilating large-opening mines is that even with large air volumes, the air velocity is often less than 100 feet/minute. Higher ventilation velocities more quickly dilute and remove contaminants from the face areas. Higher ventilation airflow velocities can be achieved by effective ventilation planning and proper choice of ventilation fans.

"After industrial sand has been mined and processed, the finished product is typically loaded into small bags of 45 kg (100 lb) or less, large bulk bags of 454 to 1,361 kg (1,000 to 3,000 lb), or vehicles such as trucks or trains for transport to end users. As the sand is being transferred and loaded, dust can be released into the work environment, potentially exposing workers to respirable crystalline silica. A number of control technologies have been developed and utilized in an effort to reduce dust liberation during loading operations. For bulk loading into trucks or trains, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) evaluated one of these technologies, the Dust Suppression Hopper (DSH), at two industrial sand processing plants. Results from these case studies show that the DSH reduced airborne respirable dust levels by 39 to 88 percent, depending upon the product size being loaded.IntroductionInhalation of respirable crystalline silica dust can lead to the development of silicosis, a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease. Once contracted, there is no cure for silicosis, so the goal is to prevent the development of the disease by limiting exposure to respirable dust containing crystalline silica at or below the exposure limit of 50 µg/ m3 recommended by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH, 2002). At industrial silica sand operations, the product contains high levels of crystalline silica, so effective control technologies are needed to minimize the respirable dust exposure of workers.NIOSH, in partnership with the Industrial Minerals Association–North America, published a dust control handbook (NIOSH, 2012) focused upon control technologies for industrial- mineral mining and processing operations. One chapter in this handbook discussed technologies for controlling dust liberated during bulk loading, including telescoping loading spouts, dust collection systems for loading spouts, enclosures for load-out areas and a newer technology known as Dust Suppression Hopper (DSH)."

A considerable volume of work exists in the literature examining the electrochemical interactions between grinding media and sulfide minerals. Broadly, most sulfide minerals are more noble than forged steel grinding media used during comminution, therefore a galvanic couple between the media and the sulfide mineral(s) exists, which increases the corrosion rate of the grinding media. The corrosion products of the grinding media, iron oxy-hydroxide species, invariably precipitate on to the surfaces of the sulfide minerals thereby affecting their floatability. This paper explores the science behind these corrosion reactions, and provides an explanation of their impact on the pulp chemistry of sulfide mineral slurries and subsequent flotation behaviour. A number of laboratory and plant case studies are used to illustrate the benefits of changing to a more inert grinding media.

SO many variations of lead-zinc ores occur in nature that it is impossible to state any rules that will apply to the concentration of ores of this type. Some have lead and zinc in approximately equal amounts; others may have pre- dominant amounts of one or the other metal. There are gradations from all sulfide to completely oxidized minerals. Some such ores carry little pyrite, others contain much more pyrite than they do lead and zinc combined. The behavior of ores in flotation is largely a function of their lead-zinc ratios. their content of pyrite or pyrhotite, the nature of existing soluble salt conditions, the character of the gangue constituents: and the speed with which the minerals float. For the purposes of this paper only those lead-zinc ores handled commonly in present-day flotation practice will be considered. These are practically all-sulfide ores with relatively minor degrees of sulphatization or oxidation.

This investigation was undertaken to contribute to the understanding of underground pull tests by conducting laboratory tests under closely controlled conditions. Steel bolts, instrumented with electrical resistance strain gages, were anchored in an aluminum block, a granite block, and a steel sleeve, and were subjected to pull tests. The bearing plates used were either flat7 dished, or embossed. In pull testing a bolt that is prestressed, there is a range of loading during which bolt load is greater than the jack-applied load, This study showed that preload, the size, shape, and type of bearing plate; and the geometry of the system determine the point at which bolt load and applied load become equal. The effects on bolt load of both a theoretical solution and actual pull tests were analogous and led to similar results.

Seventy years after the start of the Industrial Revolution in Great Britain, as reckoned from Arkwright&apos;s water frame patented in 1769, there was a significant development of the metallurgical industry in Virginia. In Britain, crucible steel had been rediscovered by Benjamin Huntsman in 17~0, and this made spring and tool steel more generally available. The metal-turning, screw-cutting lathe, including the basic principles recognized in today&apos;s engine lathe, was developed by Henry Maudslay about 1797. Wrought iron, as manufactured by Henry Cort&apos;s process patented in 1784, was readily available. Richard Trevithick&apos;s highpressure steam locomotive had met its test on the Pennydarren tramroad in 1804, and George Stephenson had built his famous Rocket, along with several other locomotives, at Newcastle around 1828. Puddling furnaces and a rolling mill had been placed in operation at the Tredegar Iron Works in Glyn Sirhowy, Monmouthshire, Wales, in 1807. In the United States, expanding commerce and a growing population resulted in continuing development from the Chesapeake to Virginia&apos;s Blue Ridge, and this demanded improved means of transportation. Ore deposits rich in hematite had been found in Virginia&apos;s Piedmont during the Colonial period, and a number of blast furnaces now dotted that area. The products of these operations were mostly pots, kettles, stove parts and like items for local trade. The James River and Kanawha Canal was incorporated in January 1785. Its eastern leg, winding along the slope of the high bluffs overlooking the river, was completed about 1800. About two dozen railroads were chartered in Virginia between 1830 and 1837. With expanding population and steady industrial development came a need for metallurgical products. Throughout the eastern United States, numerous metallurgical enterprises sprang up, and many of these flourished. The purpose of this article is to outline the development of one Southern metallurgical company, the Tredegar Iron Works, which was to have a significant impact on the industrial development of Virginia and the fighting of the American Civil War. Although the Tredegar Iron Works no longer exists, remnants of the early operations have been restored, and the current status of the site is also presented.
