Open stoping has become a popular mining method in hard rock mines, not only due to the safety of the method as a non-entry approach, but also because of the high extraction rate and low costs. At mine sites, stope performance is evaluated by calculating stope overbreak using the stability chart. However, limitations of the stability chart regarding the precision of the predictions, nonconsideration of factors such as the influence of blasting, and the exclusion of underbreak have led to non-optimal designs. The capabilities of today's computers have increased the amount of data being collected and the power of models being built. This article presents a step towards a new stope design approach where stope overbreak and underbreak are measured and georeferenced using octrees at an approximately cubic metre resolution and predicted using multivariate statistical models (partial least square, linear discriminant analysis, and random forest). Results show that overbreak and underbreak location along the design surface and their magnitude are predicted with good precision using a random forest model. These predictions are used to build the expected geometry of the open stope. The resolution of the data and the use of multivariate analysis has enabled the prediction of variation in stope performance along the design surface, going well beyond the simple qualitative per stope face prediction provided by a traditional stability chart approach.

The study proposes the Ambidextrous Leadership-Technology Adoption (ALTA) model, which integrates leadership styles such as transformational, transactional, adaptive, and ambidextrous leadership into the technology adoption process. The model emphasizes the balance between exploration (fostering innovation) and exploitation (ensuring operational efficiency). The findings suggest that transformational leadership fosters innovation by encouraging risk-taking and creativity, while transactional leadership ensures efficient technology integration. The article also identifies key barriers to technology adoption, such as organizational resistance to change, which can be mitigated through adaptive leadership that addresses employee concerns. The research emphasizes the importance of a supportive organizational culture and cross-functional collaboration, which are essential for successful technology adoption. The study concludes by offering practical recommendations for leaders to foster a culture of innovation, manage resistance, and balance short-term efficiency with long-term technological advancement.

This paper , describing the operation of the Ward Sand and Gravel Co.'s plant at Oxford , Mich . , is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of mining and preparing sand and gravel throughout the United States . These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used . The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs . It is recognized that publication of total costs might in some instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole . On the other hand , operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed . The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue . The plant described is a dredging operation with many unique features ; especially noteworthy are the mining of the sand and gravel with hydraulic jets operating on the principle of a water ejector , the unusual construction of the dredge and the self- unloading barges that tend it , the transportation of the sand and gravel to shore in barges instead of in pipe lines , the large storage capacity of the plant , and the fact that all material goes into storage before being shipped .

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) performed laboratory testing to examine and improve airborne dust capture and methane removal performance of flooded-bed scrubbers on continuous mining machines using a blowing face ventilation configuration to reduce respirable dust exposure to shuttle car operators. Several testing conditions were examined to minimize shuttle car operator dust exposure without adversely affecting continuous miner performance and production. Curtain-to-face setback distance of 9.1 m versus 15.2 m (30 ft versus 50 ft), face ventilation airflow of 226.5 m3/min versus 339.8 m3/min (8,000 ft3/min versus 12,000 ft3/min), and the use of side-body-mounted blocking sprays (on versus off) were the three primary parameters compared. Scrubber airflow was set and maintained at 198.2 m3/min (7,000 ft3/min) throughout testing. An examination of slab cuts versus box cuts and the location of the shuttle car (present behind the continuous miner versus not present in the entry) was also performed to demonstrate the effects of these constantly changing scenarios on scrubber performance. Results show that the best blowing face ventilation setup for minimizing shuttle car operator dust exposure for the tested parameters uses a 15.2-m (50-ft) curtain-to-face setback with 339.8 m3/min (12,000 ft3/min) face ventilation while operating the side-body-mounted blocking sprays. INTRODUCTION Coal mine worker overexposure to respirable coal dust continues to be a problem in U.S. underground coal mining operations, potentially leading to coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (black lung). The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requires that respirable dust exposure to coal mine workers does not exceed a 1.5 mg/m3 average over the actual working shift (79 Fed. Reg. 24814 (2014)). Although using a blowing face ventilation configuration on continuous miner (CM) sections is beneficial for removing methane emissions from the mining face, it can be detrimental for dust control for shuttle car (or ram car) operators and any other workers on the return ventilation side of the CM when compared to exhausting ventilation. Even with machine-mounted scrubbers on CMs, shuttle car operators still have some of the higher dust exposures with blowing face ventilation systems (NIOSH 2011, Beck et al. 2015). Although scrubber discharge air is not completely clean, dust being blown around the scrubber inlet and therefore not being captured by the scrubber can further increase these dust exposures (Goodman 2000). Dust control problems are also caused by inadequate face ventilation quantities causing scrubber face airflow recirculation issues (Schultz et al. 2010). In order to minimize respirable dust exposures on blowing face ventilation sections, ventilation, water spray, and scrubber parameters were experimentally examined to improve operating ranges for both dust and gas control. Several blowing face ventilation factors were examined with respect to CM spray systems and scrubber operation. Curtain-to-face setback distance and side-body-mounted blocking sprays were previously examined in the laboratory for dust control on a full-scale CM model using a scrubber on a blowing face ventilation system (Goodman 2000). The blocking sprays produced larger dust reductions at the CM’s rear corners and return for a 6.1-m (20-ft) curtain setback distance as compared to a 12.2-m (40-ft) curtain setback distance with equal face and scrubber airflows of 169.9 m3/min (6,000 ft3/min). Because face ventilation airflow quantities, shuttle car operator locations, and tracer gas concentration gradients were not previously examined during these experiments, additional research was required to determine improved operating parameters for blowing face ventilation systems.

"Previous studies have shown that the floatability of chalcopyrite in seawater at highly alkaline conditions is significantly affected by the presence of clays. The reason is that the species of calcium and magnesium present in seawater under those conditions may act as a bridge between the surfaces of clay and chalcopyrite, generating massive aggregates that then depress. In this context, the objective of this work is to analyze the impact of pretreated seawater with low amount of calcium and magnesium ions on the recovery of a sulphide copper mineral with high kaolinite content as clay. The seawater pre-treatment is done by the addition of sodium hydroxide in a high carbon dioxide environment. The chemical reactions realized under these conditions lead to the formation and precipitation of calcium and magnesium species that are subsequently removed by vacuum filtration. The pre-treated seawater is then used in flotation tests at pH 11 for copper sulphide, where the mineral is synthetically prepared by mixtures of chalcopyrite, kaolinite, and quartz. When comparing the flotation results for different types of water, including seawater and pre-treated seawater, a significant effect is observed: as the seawater hardness decreases, which comprises the calcium and magnesium ions, the recovery of chalcopyrite is increased. However, the effect is markedly enhanced in the presence of kaolinite. Therefore, the results indicate that sodium hydroxide and carbon dioxide are able to remove different species of calcium and magnesium from seawater and could improve the chalcopyrite recovery with high kaolinite content. INTRODUCTIONIn many cases, mineral deposits are found in arid areas with little access to water resources. Water is a fundamental element to carry out the unit operations that achieved the separation of valuable minerals (especially in concentration operations). Seawater has acquired an interesting role in recent years (Cisternas and Moreno, 2014); in fact, it seems to be one of the few viable options to ensure the sustainability of the mining industry in arid zones. At present, there are numerous experiences of industries that use or have used this resource, either by submitting the seawater to a desalination treatment by reverse osmosis or by applying it directly, without desalting. The latter case may involve significant economic benefits (for example, by avoiding the investment of building a desalination plant) and in some cases some operational benefits. A positive aspect is that in general terms the foaming in the saline medium is much more efficient compared to fresh water (Quinn et al., 2014; Castro et al., 2010). Some reports show that the foaming doses required to achieve a certain quality of bubbles are remarkably reduced, reaching exceptional cases such as Xstrata's Raglan concentrator, where it did not even include foaming to carry out the operation. This fact is quite promising, considering that some researchers have stated that controlling the quality of bubbles and foam could float minerals through coarse particles. This would lead to multiple benefits, such as energy savings by avoiding excessive grinding and a lower presence of fine ore that causes major problems in water recovery operations by gravitation (such as thickening) and in tailings management. However, seawater also causes significant challenges in multiple operations (Jeldres et al., 2017, 2016; Castro et al., 2010), as for example in minerals with high clay content (Uribe et al., 2017). In fresh water, the presence of clays minerals in ores is already a major problem in the flotation stages since the operation becomes difficult to be controlled, and operators are commonly forced to increase the consumption of reagents because the collectors are deposited on the clays' surfaces reducing froth stability (Farrokhpay and Bradshaw, 2012). The development and construction of the Grasberg block cave mine (GBC) is in progress, currently targeting initiation of caving in late 2018. Current production planning anticipates ramping up to full production of 130 000 to 160 000 t/d by 2027. As GBC approaches the production phase, there is a high priority on increasing the accuracy and level of detail in the production plan. The advance of the cave front directly controls the drawbell opening rate that is achievable. Therefore, an essential component of this plan is to produce an undercutting and drawbell sequence that honours the caving parameters that have been set for the mining blocks by the GBC production planning team.The PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) mine planning team and the Geovia caving business unit have developed a computational tool (Undercut Tool) capable of generating an undercutting sequence that follows a set of caving rules, such as advance rate per tunnel, maximum blasted area per period, control of lead-lag and shape of the undercut face. This tool also produces a drawbell sequence that honours the undercutting advance sequence, which is ultimately used to generate a life-of-mine production plan. This paper describes the inputs and outputs of the Undercut Tool that have been used to compute the long-term production plan for the GBC mine. It will further describe how the Undercut Tool takes into account operational constraints and geotechnical considerations that must be considered when developing a defendable production plan. Included is a discussion of the initial results of the planning outcomes from the tool; it will demonstrate how this work will support specific aspects of the plan such as the detailed undercut production drill and blast plans for the drill ring sequence, as well as how that plan will drive the drawpoint opening plan.CITATION:Villa, D, Brannon, C A, Dipas, C A and Vega, H A, 2017. "In most copper mines and concentrators, mill water is continuously recovered and reused, with fresh water added to make up for losses. When mixed, these water chemistries can lead to severe scaling, especially in pipes, tanks and pumps on the mill water supply side, reducing flows and causing significant production losses.At KGHM Robinson Nevada Mining Company, increases in the fresh water addition ratios resulted in severe scaling problems and premature pump failures thereby jeopardizing plant production. What initially appeared to be a few isolated scaling events eventually unfolded into a recurring pattern of water supply-related production losses with increasing severity. Through completion of detailed root cause analysis, chemistry modeling, laboratory work, in-plant testing and system engineering, the mechanisms of scaling were identified and addressed.Advancements in fresh water addition practices and antiscalant application methods resulted in a stepwise reduction of the mill water scaling. Cost savings and production benefits were significant to the plant’s financial metrics.IntroductionThe production of mineral and metal concentrates using the flotation process requires large quantities of water. Flotation is utilized as the primary means for beneficiation with sulfide ores. Mined ores are crushed and ground into a slurry of 20-55% solids. For each ton of ore, 400-900 gallons of water1 are needed to supply the grinding mill. Additional water is needed in the flotation circuit as well. With many modern mills operating at2 11,000-165,000 tons/day, water supply volumes can be upwards of 3,000 gpm to 100,000 gpm of flow.For plants operating at or above capacity, disruptions and restrictions in water supply flow can have a direct impact on the production and recovery of the metal. Water supply flow can be limited for a wide variety of reasons but of interest are those limitations that are due to mineral scaling. Mineral scaling is the selective point precipitation of inorganic species above saturation concentrations. Precipitated species form flow-restricting deposits in the mill water system (tanks, pumps, pipe and valves), that will eventually impact water supply to the concentrator."

More than 600 members, friends and ladies gathered early and filled the anterooms of the grand ballroom of the Commodore Hotel, while the president's reception was in progress, and then at the sound of the gong and with the music of the orchestra, rising above the happy din of conversation thronged to their seats at the tables. Following the "potage Ambassadeur"-probably to eliminate a very real hazard-the usual toy balloons appeared and a gay and lively scene, punctuated by multitudinous explosions, ensued, as the hundreds, of variously colored spheres bounced yon and hither until their gaseous existence was ended on the glowing end of a cigar or cigarette. Arbitration is a flexible method for dispute resolution that gives control to the disputing parties while still maintaining a clear and well-structured decision making process. It responds to the desires of the parties for a resolution that is fair, binding and enforceable and is guided more by pragmatism, efficiency, effectiveness and equality than by a need to comply with the legal procedures and practices of any single country or jurisdiction. Arbitration is particularly well suited for the resolution of disputes pertaining to international commercial agreements which are often present in the metallurgical sector. This paper provides a simplified outline of the features and advantages of arbitration as well as commentary regarding certain prerequisites in order for arbitration to be binding and enforceable.

All of them can, under some circumstances, be made to explode by fire. Some of them can be caused to undergo a detonating explosion by setting off a detonator in contact with them. In blasting use is made of both these means for setting off explosives, the means used being determined by circumstances.

In early 1970, General Mills Chemicals, Inc. announced the availability of en improved liquid ion exchange reagent, LIX® 64N, for the recovery of copper from various solutions, such as dump leach liquors. LIX 64N has been shown to be a considerable advance over LIX 64, and is presently in use in three commercial plants. Results have been very gratifying. For example, one of the plants was designed for operational production of 40,000 pounds copper per day, and in fact reached this output within the third week following startup of the plant. In addition to the operating plants, another is scheduled to come on stream this month with L D( 64N being used to extract and recover both copper and nickel. The chemical properties and operating characteristics of this reagent have been fully described in a previous paper. 1 LIX 64N is quite an effective and selective extractint for copper, even with copper contents as high as 15 g/l, but the reagent is somewhat limited in pH range, and loses some of its extraction efficiency as the pH drops below 0.8. Liquors derived from vat leaching, electrolytic tankhouae bleed streams, or some of the new leach schemes derived to solubilize copper from sulfide concentrates are examples of the liquors that present major problems when treated via liquid ion exchange. LIX 64N could extract some of the copper from such streams, but recovery was limited to about 75 percent. Also, in some parts of the world there are streams which are relatively low in copper (-5 g/l) but which are very high in acid (25-50 g/1 H2SO4). Again, LIX 64N can attain only about 75 percent recovery from such streams. The strength reduction method (SRM) has been implemented in the FLAC3D finite difference software and applied to coalmine entry support evaluations. The FLAC3D numerical models have been calibrated against instrumented field sites in varying geologies, depths and field stress conditions. The calibration between the field and model results obtained a satisfactory match for rock deformation and support response. Previous research has also developed good correlations between numerical model stability estimations using the SRM and empirically derived stability estimations using the analysis of roof bolt systems (ARBS) software and the coalmine roof rating (CMRR). The purpose of this paper is to further apply the SRM to investigate how specific geotechnical and support parameters can impact coalmine entry stability. Results from different studies demonstrate how the calibrated models were used to investigate a few of the well-known questions in both mine design and support design. For mine design the impact of strong and weak beds in the roof strata, rotating the principal stresses and weakening the floor on excavation stability is investigated. For support design the impact of support length, support spacing and adding cable bolts to the design is demonstrated. These scenarios are evaluated in developmental coalmine entries for a variety of geology and field stress conditions. Stability factors are calculated for each scenario using the SRM. The oxidation characteristics of solid copper matte particles under simulated Kennecott-Outokumpu Flash Converting conditions are presented. This project is concerned with the determination of the effects of operating variables on the reaction of the particles. Experiments were carried out in a large laboratory-scale flash furnace with 72 wt-% Cu matte by varying initial particle size, temperature, oxygen partial pressure, oxygen-to-matte mass ratio and residence time. Chemical analysis was used to study the oxidation extent and copper volatilization. Particle fragmentation was examined. Fractional conversion and sulfur removal slightly decreased with initial particle size, while a higher oxygen-to-matte mass ratio mainly resulted in higher fractional conversion and more efficient sulfur removal. The fractional conversion values represented the overall extent of oxidation more closely than degree of sulfur removal.

The Bureau of Mines, S. Department of the Interior) at, its Morgantown., W. Va., station, operating under a cooperative agreement with West Virginia University, is conducting research and development work on the problem of producing synthesis gas from coal. An important part of this work is the study of the gas purification necessary to meet the rigorous standards required to render the gas suitable for use in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis of liquid fuels. One of the most detrimental impurities is sulfur in all forms, the maximum amount that can be tolerated being one-tenth of a grain per hundred cubic feet. Concentrations as low as this require the use of precise analytical methods to evaluate the performance of processes used for removing sulfur. At the same time the analytical methods should be rapid in order to reveal the failure of purification before damage to the expensive synthesis catalyst results. Although sulfur in unpurified gas is generally present as hydrogen sulfide and as organic sulfur compounds, the latter may be converted to hydrogen sulfide for analytical purposes. Thus a suitable method for the determination of traces of hydrogen sulfide may also be used for the determination of organic sulfur.

The flotation process may be considered an interactive system consisting of many chemical, operational, and equipment variables. Changing anyone of these variables causes an overall system response change. This study examines the effects of simultaneously changing the operating variables of: (1) frother concentration and air flow rate, and (2) frother concentration and collector concentration. It is part of a comprehensive study to look at how changes in several of the major variables may be used to produce interactions which will allow the rougher flotation process to be optimized. Ultimate recovery, flotation rate, concentrate grade and froth quality, are used as the major evaluative criteria.

This paper presents an analysis of gold production and prices over an extended period. Production patterns are provided for the world as a whole and for the five major producing countries. Gold prices as a function of interest rates, as measured by municipal bond rates, are given for the period 1947 to the present. World gold production has had a phenomenal increase since 1980, with the exception of South Africa, all major producing nations participated in this increase, even though the price of gold generally has been decreasing since the high level attained in 1980.

This paper describing the minim, methods at the mine of the Consolidated Cortez Silver Mines, Cortez, Nevada, is one of a series of similar papers being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The Cortez district is situated on the southwest slope of Mt. Tenabo of the Cortez Range, near the middle of the boundary line between Eureka and Lander Counties (fig. 1). The camp of Cortez is 36 miles south of Beowawe, the nearest station on the Southern Pacific and Western Pacific Railroads. Mt. Tenabo, which is the highest summit of the south end of the Cortez mange, has an elevation of 9,240 feet; Cortez is about 6,280 feet above sea level. The Consolidated Cortez Silver Mines is the only company operating in the district at the present time and employs about 60 men. The daily production of l25 tons of silver-lead ore is concentrated in the company's mill of 150 tons capacity. The concentrate is hauled to Beowawe by automobile trucks for shipment to a reduction plant in Salt Lake Valley, Utah.

Mr. B. Neilly: A week or so ago the Secretary was good enough to forward me an advance copy of this paper by Mr. Logan and it was suggested that I comment on it at this meeting. At that time I was not very certain that I would be here, so I committed my thoughts to paper. As a matter of courtesy to Mr. Logan, I sent him a copy of my proposed remarks and I would like to give you just what I sent to him. Appreciating fully Mr. Logan's ability and many sources of information, one naturally hesitates to question anything seriously set forth as his considered opinion. Neither does one of my political stripe like to accuse him of being too 'conservative.? However, in places his paper reminds me of another general manager of a Canadian bank. While I was still Secretary of the Ontario Mining Association, this general manager wrote asking for our forecast on the current year's mineral production, stating that he proposed to refer to such production figures in his annual address to his shareholders. The request was considered very complimentary to the Ontario Mining Association and, in my opinion, justified a great deal of serious study and effort. Finally, the estimate was prepared and forwarded, showing a modest increase over the previous year's total. Picture our surprise and chagrin on reading his address to find that he predicted not an increase but, if you please, a decline of over $10,000,000. Before I cooled off I wrote asking the basis of such a prediction and got a reply to the effect that men in his position had to be ultra conservative in picturing the future.

"This paper is focused on blasting activities undertaken as part of the Pacific Highway Upgrade – Tintenbar to Ewingsdale – project (T2E). This is a ‘priority 1’ Pacific Highway road construction project in New South Wales (NSW), to be completed by mid-2015 (weather permitting). T2E will provide approximately 17 km of dual carriageway road starting at the northern end of the Ballina bypass and extending to the Ewingsdale interchange, and will complete the existing dual carriageway road between Ballina and the NSW/Queensland border.Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) (formerly the Roads and Traffic Authority) is delivering the project on behalf of the NSW state and federal governments. In October 2011, RMS awarded a contract to Baulderstone Pty Ltd (now Lend Lease Engineering Pty Ltd – Lend Lease) to design and construct T2E. One of the key elements in this project is the St Helena Tunnel.In order to avoid the steep grades of St Helena Hill, eliminate a well-known accident black spot and maintain the aesthetics of the Byron hinterland escarpment, RMS and Lend Lease prepared designs to construct a 434 m long dual carriageway tunnel, 46 m below the ridge line of St Helena Hill. Lend Lease elected, where geotechnical conditions permitted, to use drill and blast methods to excavate the full tunnel profile, instead of traditional mechanical excavation techniques.Since all blasting locations (both inside and outside the tunnel) were in close proximity to nearby residents, the NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure imposed strict air blast overpressure (airblast), ground vibration (vibration) limits and limited working hours. Both RMS and Lend Lease recognised that these restrictions meant that nearby residents may be exposed to blasting activities for longer than was necessary. As a result, after close consultation and agreement with the nearby residents, RMS applied successfully to the NSW Department of Planning to increase the airblast and vibration limits, as well as the working hours.Working under these new conditions, Lend Lease employed a range of best practice drill and blast technologies provided by both Orica Australia Pty Ltd and Atlas Copco Mining and Rock Excavation to improve the safety and efficiency of blasting activities and to minimise the potential negative impacts of the blasting works on affected residents. These technologies included: the use of a continuous environmental monitoring system to record the results of the blast events and provide quick and easy reporting to key stakeholders to address RMS specification requirements electronic detonators to enable accurate hole detonation timing for vibration compliance and to give project engineers the flexibility and precision to alter each design to suit the geological profile of each face the use of two software programs and advanced drill rigs to enable the efficient design of blasts, electronic transfer of designs to the drill rigs, as well as in-hole monitoring and recording of drilling performance the use of a specialised bulk emulsion system to deliver fully coupled bulk explosives into face blastholes to maximise fragmentation, and decoupled bulk explosives into perimeter blastholes, to reduce overbreak and deliver a cleaner profile.By taking a progressive approach towards the environmental restrictions and the work hours imposed, as well as utilising best practice blasting techniques, RMS and Lend Lease were able to blast with confidence and achieve their production deadlines and reduce the total cost of the project.Most importantly, RMS and Lend Lease were able to meet their environmental obligations and work constructively with the nearby residents to ensure that the blasting was undertaken as safely and efficiently as possible without delay or negative impact.CITATION:Dowling, M, Domotor, R and Miller, D, 2014. "The presence of zinc in cyanide solutions is generally thought to not have an adverse effect on precious metal recovery or recovery rate by heap leach processing. However, analytical interferences of zinc in solution can cause problems in accurately determining and controlling cyanide concentration in the leach solution, leading to increased cyanide consumption. Analytical methods and the chemistry of cyanide in the presence of zinc are reviewed. The effects of solution pH and zinc concentration on the free cyanide determination were evaluated in detail. Use of the standard silver nitrate titration and a modified titration method for controlling cyanide concentration during heap leaching were investigated experimentally. The practical implications of cyanide heap leaching in the presence of cyanide soluble zinc minerals are discussed.IntroductionThe presence of zinc in precious metal cyanidation circuits is not uncommon. Zinc can be introduced into cyanide leach solutions through dissolution of various zinc minerals1>, or through the use of a Merrill Crowe (zinc precipitation) circuit. Zinc minerals typically occur infrequently and in low concentration in gold ores, but are more abundant in silver ores. Merrill Crowe systems are most commonly employed for recovery of precious metals from solution for relatively high silver ores. It is desirable to control the amount of dissolved zinc in a cyanidation circuit for several reasons. Excessive zinc build-up in cyanide leach solution can, under certain circumstances, inhibit precious metal dissolution and adversely affect solution recovery systems. Additionally, high zinc concentrations can lead to excessive in-process cyanide inventories and potentially, to higher cyanide consumption"
