"Most deep foundation work is either unseen by the general public or viewed as an inconvenience in their daily lives. Hurricane Katrina changed that perspective for everyone in New Orleans — and many other people in the U.S. and abroad. The public and the government of south Louisiana, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), all needed to restore trust in the system that protects their property and, more importantly, their lives. While much has been written about the failures of government agencies, in this case incredible solutions were devised and implemented despite daunting schedules and arduous conditions. These solutions were achieved through collaboration, and through the efforts of USACE, where the goal was to fi nd the most expeditious and effective design/build solutions. This disaster thrust the pile driving industry into the national spotlight. Boh Bros. Construction Co., L.L.C., along with numerous local and national heavy construction companies, subcontractors, material suppliers and government agencies, take pride in the milestones reached after Hurricane Katrina.The majority of New Orleans’ population lives below sea level. Historically, the city has been protected by a fl ood control system consisting of earthen levees and I-walls (steel sheet pile topped by vertical concrete wall). Rainwater is pumped out of the city over this protection system and into canals that feed into Lake Pontchartrain. On August 29, 2005, when Hurricane Katrina made landfall just east of the city, the levee system experienced a major failure of several I-walls lining the outfall canals, causing flooding of 74% of the east bank of the city. The counterclockwise rotation of the wind pushed the lake water onto the south shore, raising the level of water more than 10 ft (3 m). A failure of 450 ft (137 m) of floodwall lining the east side of the 17th Street Canal caused extensive damage. This breach prevented the use of the pump stations that outfall into the 3-mile (4.8 km) long 17th Street Canal."

"As essential equipment in the metallurgical industry, current air heat exchangers cannot meet the requirements of high temperature heat transfer. In this paper, an energy efficient air heat exchanger, based on accumulation of the heat generated by microwave absorbing materials, is presented according to heat transfer theory and principles of the microwave field. A tubular shaped heat exchanger was designed and built up through temperature-rising curve, and experimental research of microwave high-temperature air heat exchangers was carried out. It was found from experiments that the tubular shaped heat exchanger fabricated using material B could be used for high temperature heat transfer system, and equilibrium temperatures could reach up to 457—485?.IntroductionHeating or cooling of air by heat exchangers is commonly practiced in a wide range of industries including construction, chemical, machinery, textile, printing, and dyeing [1-3]. Generally such heating or cooling of air is achieved in pipe heat exchangers. There are several drawbacks for such heat exchangers, namely, (i) the limitation of temperature to which the pipes can be heated, (ii) tendency to oxidize at high temperature, and (iii) poor strength of metallic pipes at high temperature. These limitations do not allow pipe heat exchangers to be operated at high temperatures [4-6].Microwave heating of inert solids, which are stable at high temperature, is a possible solution to achieve high temperature of the medium in air heat exchangers. It is well-known that microwave heating is an efficient, clean, safe, easy-to-control heating method. Microwave heating utilizes the dielectric and magnetic properties of a material. When microwaves penetrate and spread into the dielectric material, electrons, ions, etc move in the internal electromagnetic field, while the elasticity of inertia and friction impede these movements. This results in a significant thermal effect, increasing the surface temperature rapidly [7-8]. This paper studies mainly design and experimental research of microwave high-temperature air heat exchanger."

"While there has been continual improvement in the models for predicting deposition velocity and pipeline friction losses, the fundamental design philosophy for tailings pipelines has remained the same over the previous three or four decades: design the tailings pipeline to operate in turbulent flow without a deposit on the pipe invert for all expected process conditions. Recent improvements in the understanding of slurry pipeline flows allows for the design of pipelines operating with a deposit on the pipe invert, allowing the system to operate at moderate velocities for high flow rates, optimizing system energy requirements and maximizing pipeline wear life.Tailings pipelines are increasingly operated at higher solids concentrations when there is a greater likelihood the pipeline will operate in laminar flow due to the higher tailings slurry rheology. Historically, slurry pipelines have been operated in turbulent flow. We now know that laminar-flow pipeline operation is possible as there are several operational laminar-flow tailings pipelines. While our understanding of laminar-flow slurry pipelines is not complete, recent research provides guidance on how to approach the design of these pipelines.New sensor technology has led to the development of an instrument that provides reliable indication of bed-deposit height within a pipeline. This technology is particularly helpful in operating pipelines with a deposit and has application in better understanding the operation of laminar-flow pipelines. Failure of tailings pipelines can result in consequent damage to surrounding structures and unacceptable spillage into the environment. Modern pipeline leak detection technology allows operators to better manage this risk by ensuring safe and reliable operation of tailings pipelines.This article provides an overview of the each of the above advances in the design and operation of tailings pipelines.Operating tailings pipelines with a depositTailings pipelines, and slurry pipelines in general, are typically designed to operate without a deposit on the pipeline invert. Meaning, the minimum operating velocity exceeds the turbulent deposition velocity. This approach has been adopted due to concerns regarding potential blockage of a pipeline operating with a deposit."

Introduction Before beginning to write this paper, I decided that I should first find suitable definitions of the words Sample and Sampling. The dictionary gives: "Sample.-A portion indicative of the whole"; and according to Baillie (1), sampling is "That process whereby a representative and comparatively small portion of material is selected from a large bulk, and preserved under such conditions as shall prevent contamination or avoidable alteration, with a view to the formation of valid conclusions regarding the suitability of the bulk for specified purposes". These comprehensive definitions are alike in substance, and indicate that unless a truly representative portion is taken, it is not a sample. Ore 'as mined' generally varies a good deal in composition, and, in crushing, segregation takes place. Some of the minerals present, due to differences in hardness and friability, break into smaller pieces than others, and, on reaching the bin, the coarse particles roll away, leaving the fines behind. The result of this segregation is generally quite noticeable on the conveyor feeding the mill, especially when the bin is nearly empty and the crushing plant shut down. Should the sampling period synchronize with either the coarse or the fines, the sample obviously would not be representative. I agree that this is rather far fetched, but I maintain that such a condition is possible. Assuming that a representative sample may be procured from the feed conveyor, the method of cutting it down for assay has considerable influence in maintaining the original condition of the sample. The finer the material is ground after each cut, the more uniform the sample will remain. To illustrate this point, let us take a quantity of fine sand and add, say, three grains of rice to represent metallic particles. We may mix this sample by any of the known methods, then cut it into four equal portions. It is obvious that at least one of the portions will be without a rice grain. But let us grind the three grains of rice into flour and proceed as before. Now there will be a much greater chance of including some of the rice in each portion.

"A tremendous amount of research, analysis, and engineering time is used to design a proper roof support system including the type, length, and location of the roof bolts. Unfortunately, since the roof bolts are being installed under unsupported roof, the exact location for the bolt holes cannot easily be determined and then marked onto the roof. The actual location where the roof bolts are installed is typically left to visual estimates by the operator. This frequently results in either (1) the operator overestimating the space between roof bolts and installing more bolts than required, thereby increasing cost and reducing efficiency; or (2) the operator underestimating the space between roof bolts and installing fewer bolts than required, thereby reducing safety, leading to potential roof failure or possible violations.A patented laser light grid system has been developed by J .H. Fletcher and Monitech, a South African Company, to aid in proper machine positioning in the heading and proper bolt spacing. The system can also show when an entry is over width, requiring additional roof support. The system is relatively simple and inexpensive. The concept is applicable across the full range of roof bolters from low to high seams and from single boom to multiple boom bolters. The system can be configured to meet most bolting patterns.The system consists of several very small 1 milliwatt, class 2, line type lasers that project a line onto the roof. The actual laser is 27mm in diameter x 47mm long (1"" x 1.8""). In South Africa it is approved as intrinsically safe and is mounted inside a 50mm diameter x 64mm long (2""x 2.5"") protective housing. In the USA, we are seeking an X/P approval and the laser will be mounted in a headlight enclosure 110mm diameter x 125mm long (4.3"" x 5""). Fifteen of the systems have been installed in South African coal mines with good results.The system has aided the mines in meeting the bolt spacing tolerance used in the Republic of South Africa, which is typically 15% of the nominal bolt spacing or 7 in for 4-ft bolt spacing. Fletcher has submitted the system to MSHA for approval in the US."

The greatest objection to be brought against the present methods for estimating phosphorus in iron and steel, is the time consumed in the operation. The following method, originated and perfected by Mr. E. D. Campbell, assistant in the chemical laboratory of the University of Michigan, will, 1 think, if carefully followed out, give results that are sufficiently accurate for technical purposes, and will give them in less time than they can be obtained by any other process. The process consists in comparing the color obtained by the action of stannous chloride upon a solution of the phospho-molybdate precipitate obtained from the solution of iron or steel, with that obtained from a standard solution of molybdie acid which represents a given amount of phosphorus. The operation is as follows : Take of ordinary steel 1 grm. and treat as in any of the wellknown processes until the phosphorus is precipitated as ammoniumphospho-molybdate. When precipitated, the phospho-molybdate precipitate is filtered out, thoroughly washed with an acid solution of ammonium nitrate, and, finally, twice with water, to remove most of the ammonium nitrate. The precipitate is then dissolved in about 1 c. c. of 10 per cent. potassium hydrate, which is let fall drop by drop on the filter till the precipitate is dissolved ; the filter is now washed with about 25 or 30 c. c. of water, and the potassium hydrate solution, which now consists of 25-32 c. c. of solution, is boiled until the peculiar frothy appearance, which first appears on boiling, is entirely gone. The solution is then cooled until perfectly cold, and about 10 or 15 c. c. of strong hydrochloric acid added ; if the solution is kept cold this will form no precipitate, but a light yellow or colorless solution. The solution is now ready for the addition of stannous chloride, and the subsequent comparison of color produced with that obtained from the standard molybdie acid. The comparison is made in tubes that are calibrated like carbon-tubes, but which are larger, about 5/8-inch bore, and graduated to 100 c. c.; this makes them about 18 inches long. The mining industry of the United States has-long been severely criticized because of its high rate of accident occurrence, net only as compared with other major industries-in the United States but also with the mining industries of other countries particularly Europe. Statistics (often not of strictly comparable nature) indicate that the accident-frequency rate in all mining is currently about three times and the accident-severity rate is about seven times as great as the average for general industrial work in the United States. These figures are by no means comforting to humanitarian mining men, irrespective of their status in. the industry, and they constitute a challenge that certainly cannot continue to be ignored much longer. This picture becomes much darker when the above statistics are augmented with data indicating that. on an exposure basis our mines (more particularly our coal mines) have accident rates two, three, or even more times as great as more or less similar types of mines in Europe, particularly England and Wales, Belgium, France, and Germany. However, these foreign accident statistics should be carefully analyzed before we become very mush concerned about them, because they are clot strictly comparable owing to several considerations, not the least of which is the fact that foreign methods of compiling or recording accident statistics often differ materially from ours. Moreover, foreign mining and other conditions axe definitely dissimilar to ours in many if not most phases, and numerous ether factors affect the comparability of foreign mine-accident statistics with ours. Unquestionably it should also be taken into consideration that the accident rate of the 130,000,000 or more constituting the populace of the United. States as a whole is much higher than that of any other major country in the world and is two, throe, or more times the rate of the European countries that have more favorable mine-accident rates than those of the United States. Moreover, it is significant that the mine-accident-severity- rate of British mines is about six times the average accident-severity rate of the major industries of the British Isles, or but little mere, favorable than the comparable figures in the United States, namely, that mining-has an accident-severity rate about seven times that of the average of about 30 of the major industries of this country.

Two exploratory gasification tests of limited duration were made at Dorsten, Germany, with strongly coking Pittsburgh-bed coal in a fixed-bed pressure gasifier. To reduce the coking potential of the Arkwright coal, ash refuse from the gasification of Dorsten (Leopold) coal was added to pre-pare coal-ash mixtures which contained nominal 20 and 30 percent ash. Major adjustments in principal process variables at the beginning of the tests resulted in wide fluctuations in the rate of gas production, gas offtake temperature, and carbon dioxide concentration in the gas. Because a higher steam-to-oxygen ratio was used in the tests than was customarily employed for routine operation, gas production was lower, and steam and oxygen consumption was higher. After operating conditions had been improved, the results of a 12~-hour-long test with addition of sufficient ash refuse to obtain a nominal 30 percent ash concentration indicated that operation is feasible with this coal mixture using a fixed-bed pressure gasifier equipped with a rotating coal distributor and stirrer.

This report discusses fire-resistant hydraulic fluid safety from three different directions. First, results of a survey prepared for the Fire Resistant Hydraulics Journal by the staff of the Fluid Power Research Center are analyzed. Second, operational limitations of fire-resistant hydraulic fluids are examined. Finally, laws and standards of various foreign countries are investigated. Three conclusions are derived from a close study of fire-resistant hydraulic fluid safety from these three directions. First, a significant number of experts in the fluid power industry are no in agreement about aspects of fire-resistant hydraulic fluid fire-resistance and toxicity. This indicates a need for more in depth research. Second, the use of fire-resistant hydraulic fluids involves a compromise between the decreased fire hazards and increased toxicity and machine incompatibility problems. Finlly, major foreign governmental agencies have thorough laws and standards concerning fire-resistant hydraulic fluids. These laws and standards may provide a solid framework for further international research into fire-resistant hydraulic fluid safety.

"The maintenance of permissible equipment which is tested and inspected at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines is dependent to a surprisng degree upon the voltage at which the equipment is operated. The difficulty of maintaining 500-volt equipment is frequently brought to the bureau's attention, and it is quite possible that if the bureau had appreciated at the beginning the full hazard involved, it would never have undertaken the approval of equipment operating at voltages greater than 250 volts.In this connection, the following statement from State mine inspection departments and other sources are of interest as showing the general feeling in safety organizations with respect to voltages higher than 250. These statements, although obtained as a result of a questionnaire sent cut several years ago, still apply very well to present conditions.A. I have not had time to consider seriously the proposed change from every angle, but looking at it from a standpoint of hazard, feel that the danger would be greatly increased. I have always occupied the position that underground voltage on portable equipment should never exceed 250 volts.High voltage of course would mean smaller transmission lines, which would be more economical and no doubt would require in several instances smaller equipment; notwithstanding, if this statement is true, the writer is still favorable to low voltage on underground portable equipment.B. I believe 500 volts should be the limit on the best equipment ender the best conditions and that the U. S. Bureau of Mines should do all in its power to limit the voltage to 500 volts on permissible equipment, as any increase in voltage means increased hazard.C. I will refer you to a section of our mining law, entitled ""An Act to Regulate the Tine of Electricity in the Mines of the State of ----"" which reads in part, as follows: Trolley wires, or other exposed electrical wires, shall not carry a voltage above 275 volts.You may readily see by this that we are not permitted to operate mining machines under ground in -----, with more than 275 volts at the terminals, except that we are permitted to install transforming stations throughout the mines, after complying with certain regulations at the mine.However, as we have had to date, within the calendar year of 1925, six men electrocuted in the mines of the State, using a voltage of 275 volts, I am of the opinion that if this voltage was increased, the hazard would also be increased in proportion.D. I do not care to make a statement for publication: however, I am referring you to our mining laws. On page 27 and 28 you will find what the laws of -----¬require relative to the installation of electricity in the mines.""Hereafter where electricity is installed no higher than two hundred seventy-five (275) volts shall be used underground, except for transmission, or for application to transformers or other apparata, where the high-voltage circuit is stationary. High-voltage motors, and transformers, shall be installed in suitable chambers, built of fire-proof construction, and well ventilated, and shall not be placed on intake, or between intake and return air courses. All high-voltage lines lines and apparata must be clearly marked, to indicate their danger. Main and distribution switchboards for high voltage shall be made of insulating and incombustible material, such as marble or slate, and to be free of all metallic veins, or of material equivalent thereto. Same shall be installed in a dry place. All switches or other instruments used in connection with high voltage shall be installed on suitable switchboards, with at least a three-foot passageway in front and rear properly floored, and kept looked by a door at each end that can be opened from the inside without a key. With higher than medium voltage, there shall not be any live metal work on the front of switchboard, and the entry circuit must be protected by an oil breaker s"

The technique of remote sensing, used for many years by earth scientists, is being applied to the detection and monitoring of air pollution. Instrumentation being developed is of a very diverse nature and is effective, Fn varying degrees, at ranges from 1,000 meters to the altitude of a space satellite. This paper describes a number of the recent developments in this new field. Instruments based on spectroscopic, laser, and photographic systems are discussed. Sensors are being developed which utilize correlation spectrometry, interferometry, Raman scattering, Mie scattering, laser line absorption, and simple photographic detection.

Introduction A comprehensive study of the economics of processes for smelting iron ores has been made by the Ontario Research Foundation on behalf of the Ontario Research Commission. This survey has included investigations of all processes in commercial use, and proposed processes which are still in the experimental stage. The two main objects of this work were to discover (l) whether any known processes would be particularly suited to present and future Canadian conditions, and (2) whether any new process would be of assistance in solving the present scrap shortage in Canada. The future prospects of the Canadian iron smelting industry have changed radically in the past ten years. For nearly twenty years before 1939 no iron ore was mined in Canada. The ore used was imported, mainly from the United States and Newfoundland. The economics of iron blast-furnace smelting always force the location of blast furnaces near the source of coal for making high-grade metallurgical coke, and near the market for iron and steel, rather than near the iron ore. Blast-furnace installations in Canada are confined to the north shores of the Great Lakes with ready access to United States coal and ore and the major Canadian markets, and to Nova Scotia near the coalfields of that Province. This distribution of primary smelting capacity naturally results in relatively high prices for iron and steel in the West, the North, and in Quebec.

For engineering applications, magnesium is usually alloyed with one or more elements which include aluminium, manganese, rare earth metals, lithium, zinc, and zirconium. Under normal environmental conditions, the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys is comparable or better than that of mild steel. The oxide film thickness on pure magnesium after exposure for only ?10 seconds at ambient temperature is 2.2 ± 0.3 nm. Exposure to humid air or to water leads to the formation of a thick hydrated amorphous film that has an oxidation rate less than 0.01 pm/ y. E-pH diagram and high temperature corrosion are discussed. The pH values between 8.5 and 11.5 correspond to a relatively protective oxide or hydroxide film that is more stable at higher pH. Structural applications of magnesium alloys are limited by creep strength rather than by oxidation. Active and active-passive behaviours of magnesium alloys are discussed. The pilling Bedworth Ratio values of oxide and hydroxide are 0.79 and 1.77 respectively and so the formation of Mg(OH)2 inside the oxide film could lead to the development of cracks. Microbiologically influenced corrosion and rational biodegradation of magnesium alloys are discussed because of their interest for medical care.

Recent papers on support of roof and top rock in mines representing present practice in so far as it hits been described by engineers in all of the principal mining countries, cover a relatively aide range of topics. The papers abstracted herein include such subjects as the testing of materials of support, failure and movement of rock above workings, effect of excessive pressures on rock masses, axed the application in mines of timber, metal, concrete, packing, and filling support. It is not within the scope of this paper to present a logical and orderly discussion of the elements of support and their application to conditions influenced by the material worked or the method of mining. Only the essential facts of a paper appear in the abstracts, the idea being to give a fairly clear picture of the behavior of various types of support under brows conditions and to put into concise form important information concerning present practice, modifications of practice, and the trend toward new practice. With such valuable facts from others experience made readily available, it Is hoped that the engineer with particular and often trying problems may obtain suggestions that will be immediately helpful.

Energy management in industry has recently achieved notice as a way to reduce costs without decreasing production. The same approach used in industry can be used in mining, even though the processes are different. This approach is based upon a three phase system of data collection, implementation, and monitoring, all aimed at gathering and evaluating information in such a way as to have a maximum impact on energy costs. This approach has these advantages: (1) attention is directed toward the part of each mining system where the most energy is used, (2) input is collected systematically from all persons involved in the operation of each system, and (3) a means of monitoring the progress toward established goals is created. The mining systems considered are truck haulage, conveyor haulage, blasting and crushing, and lighting. After describing the general procedure, the authors have described a specific method for improving the efficiency (and hence the energy consumption) of round-trip truck haul age systems.

This is the first of a series of reports on the relation between microscopic composition and chemical and physical properties of banded bituminous coals. It describes the relation between microscopic composition and behavior during thermal decomposition of a heterogeneous, high-volatile A bituminous coal from the Chilton bed in West Virginia. The standard free-swelling test was used as a simple means of studying the effect of heat on the coal. Although swelling indexes are not precise indicators of coal behavior in the coke oven and have limited value in caking investigations, they are reliable for predicting expansion of coal in a fuel bed and have practical value in the study of fuels. The swelling test also supplements other useful laboratory tests for determining the plastic and expansion properties of coal.

My subject is gold price forecasting and monitoring as an important aspect of gold marketing. While I 'm specifically addressing gold, it is understandable that many other commodities could be readily substituted. Gold marketing must be studied as three distinct processes, and it is my intention to cover each of these processes in turn. First I?ll cover the process of gold price monitoring and forecasting in some detail. In order to select a method, or combination of methods, to be used to sell gold a determination of the future price profile is essential. The profitability of the sales effort will be determined, to a large extent, by how accurately the future price behavior of the gold market has been forecast.

"A successful procedure for the recovery of a valuable product from weathered tank-bottom settlings has been developed in the laboratories of the Bureau of lines and used in a field pilot plant. These heavy emulsion settlings, generally regarded by the industry as waste material, have usually been drained into open pits or storage ponds and eventually destroyed.Laboratory examination of the waste material shows it to consist essentially of a ""water-in-oil"" emulsion containing a considerable volume of congealed ""paraffin."" This paraffin is mainly high-melting-point wax; known in the industry as microcrystalline wax, for which there is an increasing demand.Because of the physical properties of this wax, the tank-bottom settlings are not responsive to conventional methods used for demulsifying ordinary crude-oil emulsions.The work upon which this report is based was conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with -the Kansas State. Board of Health and with special cooperative agreements-with the Cities Service Oil Co, Bartlesville, Okla., and the Bareco Oil Co,. Barnsdall, Okla. The studies were made under the general supervision of R. A. Cattell, chief engineer, Petroleum and Natural-Gas Division, Bureau of Mines, Washington; D. C., and H. C. Introduction The development of the method for recovering zinc from lead blast-furnace slags at Trail is interesting and important in the history of both lead and zinc metallurgy. Many efforts have been made in the past, particularly in Germany, to make economic recovery of zinc from slag. The Pape process on Oker slags was successful and is being worked at the present time. More recently the Waelz process has come to the fore. One effort at Cockle Creek, Australia is of special interest in view of subsequent developments. This was re-ported in detail by Guy Courtney in 1920(1). It deserves mention as it shows how, as in many other instances in the metallurgy of lead and zinc, important pioneering work has been done in Australia. These experiments, started over 25 years ago, comprised reduction with coke, powdered coal, and eletrothermically in carbon-lined furnaces. The so-called slag eye furnace, which volatilised the metals from a blast furnace running with a hot top, was also investigated.

An award is a form of recognition given for superior performance in a special field of endeavor. Each year awards are given by the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association and the National Safety Council to the coal-mining industry's underground and open-pit mines that have worked a specific number of man-hours without a lost-time injury. These awards have a dual significance in that they prove efficiency can be attained without injury to persons. Safety awards do not result from luck or good fortune but do result from sincere desire coupled with sufficient effort and cooperation to achieve a desired goal.
