Due to the world's ever increasing minerals and energy demands, process plants have to cope economically with ever growing throughput rates. This trend has accelerated the development of high capacity vibrating screens. Screens with screening areas of 30 to 50 square meter (322 to 540 square feet) and width of 5.5 meter (18') are technically possible and are being used presently with great success. This paper will concern itself with the general aspects of large screen design, by using modern technology and the latest findings with regards to fatigue strengths relative to the laws of vibration. It also will investigate the technical and economical limits of such designs.

World urban expansion puts constraints on the available land surface area of our major cities both for accommodating people as well as providing infrastructure and services whilst at the same time attempting to preserve the remaining natural environment. Whilst consideration is often given to underground planning for private and public transport infrastructure, the author is of the opinion that the current lack of underground planning of our cities that are suitable for underground development will have major long implications when finally the need for underground space planning is critical and ultimately recognised. This paper identifies the need for our city planners to integrate surface planning and underground planning as a ‘total planning solution’ where the city plan incorporates the elements of underground space planning as identified in this paper. Investigations by the author reveal that there are very few cities in the world that actually incorporate underground space planning in their city plans. The author uses the City of Brisbane as a case study for the potential introduction of underground space planning as part of the city plan. Despite efforts by the author to include the planning concept of underground commercial development in the latest Brisbane City Plan 2014 as well as four underground space workshops in Brisbane over the past 20 year through the Australasian Tunnelling Society (ATS), underground space planning for the City of Brisbane, apart from infrastructure projects, is not considered of significance to the City of Brisbane.CITATION:Robertson, A C, 2014. "Wireless technologies are permeating the mining and metals industry and enabling a myriad of benefits. With standards such as IEEE 802.11 for wireless devices and ISA100.11a for wireless field instruments protecting their investments, customers look to benefit from the cost and flexibility offered by wireless devices. Using wireless field instruments, plants are eliminating the costs associated with wired system by 50 to 70% and using these savings to install more field instruments, which, when used smartly, enables them to optimize their processes efficiency and equipment reliability. Wireless also empowers a mobile workforce by allowing them to have access to key process and maintenance data directly from the field. This paper describes how wireless can help operations and maintenance personnel to be more effective. "In Part I, Gibbs’ phase rule was applied to mass-balanced EH-pH diagrams for the Cu-As-S-H2O system. The diagrams were generated using the stoichiometry of enargite as a basis. In this study, the calculations were expanded to cover the stoichiometries of three other Cu-As-S minerals – tennantite, sinnerite and lautite – and compared with enargite. Stability regions within the resulting EH-pH diagrams were found to change with stoichiometry such that a particular mineral would predominate if its stoichiometry was used in the calculation. Solution speciation was also found to vary, with thioarsenate being the best example. This stoichiometric effect helps to explain results reported in the literature and would be difficult to realize if it were not for mass-balanced calculations. IntroductionA comprehensive thermodynamic review has been conducted on the aqueous copper-arsenic-sulfur (Cu- As-S) system (Gow et al., 2014, 2015a, 2016b; Gow, Huang and Young, 2016c). Data on the free energies of more than 100 species were collected from various authors, and thermodynamic databases collated to produce mass-balanced EH-pH diagrams using the thermodynamic equilibrium calculation software STABCAL (Huang, 2014). The full database is listed and discussed in Gow et al. (2015a). Diagrams were generated for enargite and confirmed with Raman spectroscopy using bulk mineral electrodes in order to identify reactions spectroelectrochemically. Theoretical calculations agreed well with the experimental results under alkaline conditions (Gow et al., 2015a), acid conditions (Gow et al., 2014) and alkaline sulfide leaching conditions (Gow et al., 2015b).In the present study, additional mass-balanced EH-pH diagrams were generated by changing the Cu-As-S stoichiometry from enargite (Cu3AsS4) to tennantite (Cu12As4S13), sinnerite (Cu6As4S9) and lautite (CuAsS). Regions for the thermodynamically stable species were shown to change with the four different mineral compositions. Potential leach conditions, both for co-dissolution and selective dissolution techniques, were examined for differences in predominant species according to changing copper-to-arsenic ratios, sulfur compositions and sulfur oxidation states."

Currently, underground mining of deeper massive deposits with lower grades, harder rock conditions in high strength environments, entails difficulties in caving, fragmentation and seismicity of the orebody.So far, the use of preconditioning (PC) with hydraulic fracturing (HF) has shown positive results in terms of seismic response and caving performance, while PC combined with explosives aims to weaken the rock mass, causing an additional effect on fragmentation.In particular, mines commonly referred to as ‘supercaves’, operated by caving methods, have the need to integrate mine to plant processes, where rock fragmentation appears as a key tool. In fact, it implies making mining and comminution processes more efficient to the plant and for mines, it justifies the search of innovative solutions in drilling and blasting techniques to precondition the rock mass. The following paper aims to show the feasibility of numerical blast modelling to weaken the rock mass using explosives, mainly through sensitivity analysis applied to designs to minimise bias and uncertainty in the results. It is shown how the presence of structures, their geometry and in situ stresses influence or interfere with the PC method being used.From the work, it is concluded that better knowledge on the application of explosives weakening allows specialists to strengthen numerical models associated with every design and therefore previously validate their applicability, helping to understand complex phenomena such as the propagation of mechanical waves in non-elastic heterogeneous media. In this sense, it is understood that while there are studies (Sanchidrián, Segarra and López, 2006) showing that the transfer of energy in the rock mass could be even greater in a confined environment, the more competent rock mass and higher in situ stresses interfere mostly on the effectiveness of a technique using explosives.CITATION:Gottreux, I, Córdova, E, González, P and Videla, J, 2016. "INTRODUCTION The Crossrail project provides an East-West link across London enabling an additional 200 million journeys each year linking up major business centres and existing transportation interchanges, while reducing congestion at street level and within the current underground system. The project has built major structures in Sprayed Concrete Linings (SCL), including 5 new stations, 6 crossover caverns and numerous passages, adits and ventilation tunnels. Construction has taken approximately 4 years, and has involved the spraying of over 200,000m3 of concrete. At the start of the project there was a lack of available records from previous projects concerning concrete falls, which hindered risk assessments and the ability to make meaningful comparisons around spraying or material performance. This paper redresses this lack of data by providing information on falls experienced on this project and makes recommendations to assist future projects. Construction Methods Table 1 below summarises the main contracts with elements of permanent SCL. The listed primary lining lengths include pilot tunnels, side drift tunnels and enlargements as separate tunnels.A range of construction sequences were used in order to deal with the design requirements, geometry, and the ground and ground water conditions. The following briefly summarises the build up by layers, with typical design dimensions provided for a platform sized tunnel (approximately 9m internal diameter), excluding tolerance allowances. Some linings were sprayed in more than one layer to allow for inclusion of reinforcement layers or to avoid a too aggressive build-up of thickness: •,Initial shotcrete, or sealing, layer (ISL) of 75mm followed by a Primary Lining (PL) of 300mm. •,Regulating layer of 40mm followed by a Waterproof membrane (Sprayed membrane, 3-6mm). •,Secondary lining (SL) of 250mm with a separate sprayed fire protection layer (FPL) of 50mm."

Variograms can be powerful tools for the analysis and control of process streams and their sampling. Their uses and proper utilisation have been described somewhat unclearly to date, and their limitations and precautions of use are too rarely mentioned. The general meaning and properties of the variogram tool and its use in geostatistics are therefore reviewed in details to derive a critical view of its proper use for process control: what to expect from it and what it cannot deliver and which uses are illusory or potentially misleading. (Paper presented at the Institution of Mining Engineers' general meeting held in London on 8th June 1916.) It was shown in the last Supplement to the Registrar-General's Reports, in connection with the census of 1901, that the general death-rate among colliers was considerably lower than in the great majority of occupations but that there is an exception to this in the case of colliers above the age of 55. Examination of the statistics finds that the excessive death-rate among old colliers is to a large extent only apparent, and that the real excess of bronchitis from which they have suffered has greatly diminished. It is concluded: (1) that good ventilation is of considerable importance to the health and continued working efficiency of miners, as well as to their safety from accidents; and (2) that there is no real statistical evidence of harm resulting from the inhalation of coal-dust or shale-dust in the quantities ordinarily breathed by miners, and a strong presumption that the dust they breathe protects them against serious dangers from bacilli that are removed from the lungs by the dust-clearing cell mechanisms

"Construction of large facilities underground in urban areas has many advantages. In order to show the advantages, a case study of the Norsborg metro depot in Stockholm Sweden has been made. The Norsborg metro depot will be the largest and most modern underground metro depot in northern Europe. The depot has been built in hard rock in an urban area with small impact on the environment and local residents. The paper describes how it is possible to build underground facilities in a cost efficient way and take care of the challenges regarding working environment that comes with locating a permanent working place underground. INTRODUCTION The Stockholm area is one of the five fastest growing regions in Europe and home to more than a fifth of Sweden's population on just two percent of Sweden's surface. The population is growing rapidly, with about 35,000 people per year and is expected to reach 2.6 million in 2030. In order to meet the development and enable continued growth, housing projects and expansion of infrastructure need to keep the same pace; this is an easy conclusion to make but much more difficult to realize in practice. The main challenge is to accomplish development in a sustainable and efficient manner, minimizing the use of resources and land. By constructing facilities underground more urban space will be made available for development and/or for greening of city centers. Considering sustainability factors such as land value in decision making for placing of structures or facilities, underground locations could become a first choice alternative. During 2015 and 2016, several major underground infrastructure projects in the city of Stockholm will start, including a 14 km sewage tunnel and an 18 km by-pass highway tunnel. Furthermore the Stockholm metro system is currently undergoing the largest expansion since the 1970’s, a 19 kilometers extension of the metro system including new trains and new stations is planned. During 2013 - 2015 Skanska Sweden took part in the construction of a new metro depot placed underground in the southern part of Stockholm; the Norsborg metro depot. This is a top modern urban underground facility that in 2017 will serve as depot for 17 new metro trains. The project was selected for “Outstanding Project of The Year” at the ITA Tunneling Awards 2015."

The effect of particle shape on true flotation has been widely reported. The present paper presents results obtained in investigating the effect of particle shape on the entrainment of particles during the flotation process. Different hydrophilic minerals with particles of varying aspect ratios were used and their shape determined using rheological tests and QEMSCAN. Their entrainment properties showed a close relationship to their shape with the recovery due to entrainment increasing as the aspect ratio of the particles increased. The effect of surface charge, by changing pH, and size of particles showed that the effect of shape was sustained at different pHs and particle sizes. Proposals are made to explain these observations in terms of the known relationships between drag coefficients and terminal velocities and shape. Since it has been previously reported that different milling procedures can affect particle shape, these results indicate that it is possible that such different procedures may result in increased entrainment of hydrophilic minerals.

Extraction data for Cu, Zn and Fe were obtained from 4.5" and 10" columns using massive sulfide ore and natural acid mine water. The purpose was to determine if recycling of solution through the column would produce leach liquors of 4 g/l Cu and Zn at extraction rates of 1 g/l per pass at typical flow rates of 0.002 to 0.006 gpm/sq.ft. Test results exceeded expectations. Cu and Zn concentrations of 4 g/l were obtrained within 4 to 6 cycles. Concentrations greater than 6 g/l Cu and 8 g/l Zn were reached within 10 cycles. Concentrations of greater than 40 g/l of Fe and free sulfuric acid were obtained with no decrease in biological activity being observed. No reagents were used.

"THE ASSESSMENT of pneumoconiosis-producing dusts in mines and other industries is usually undertaken for one or more of three reasons: (1) To compare dust exposures at particular operations with standards of permissible dustiness in order that hazards may be evaluated and preventive procedures initiated where required.(2) To study particular operations with the objective of improving dust control devices or procedures by locating dust sources. (3) To obtain data which, along with the results of medical investigations, may assist in understanding the causes of dust-induced diseases or aid in the establishment of permissible standards of dustiness. Most dust measurements are made for the first of these reasons -to evaluate dust hazards so that they may be controlled. For this purpose, four quite different assessment techniques have been in widespread use for many years. One of these is based on the konimeter, an instrument familiar to most .Canadian mining men; a second on the impinger, which is also widely used in Canada, and almost exclusively so in the United States; a third on the thermal precipitator, used extensively in Britain and South Africa; and a fourth on the tyndallometer, a light-scattering instrument used in Germany."

Introduction The problems of metallogenesis are largely related to those concerning the origin of igneous rocks, which, in turn, are involved with the question of crustal mechanics. Many ore-bodies are genetically related to associated intrusive and there is an equally close association apparent between igneous intrusion and crustal deformation. The problem of ore-deposition is concerned, therefore, with the fundamental problems of geology. For a long time speculations regarding crustal movements rested largely on the contraction theory and its associated conceptions. Vertical movements were considered to be all important and horizontal movements secondary to them. Magmas were pictured as rising more or less vertically in the crust and were believed to form in vertically disposed magma-chambers or reservoirs. The principle of magmatic differentiation seemed to offer the best explanation of the origin and association of diverse rock types and it seemed also to require the existence of quiescent magma-chambers for the admittedly slow process of differentiation. Accumulating evidence of the importance of horizontal movement in the crust, has, along with other considerations, discredited the contraction hypothesis and many of the inferences that go with it. The same evidence may require some change in the prevailing conception of the origin of the various types of igneous rock and of the mechanics of intrusion. Geologists are now at sea concerning some of the vital and fundamental problems of the crust, and the field is open for speculation. The writer is developing a hypothesis which seems to permit an explanation and? a correlation of earth structures and phenomena. If it rests on a firm foundation, the hypothesis, because it is fundamental, is certain to have a profound bearing on the problems of economic geology. It is for this reason that an outline of the hypothesis is offered at this time. Only a few of its economic bearings are foreseen at this time and these will be indicated.

Mining and metallurgical industries need to minimize their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions; Hatch specializes in conducting mining and metallurgical energy management assessments and optimizing productivity. Projects executed have demonstrated that there is a wealth of energy management, waste reduction, and process efficiency improvements that require no or low capital investment. Typical energy cost savings are on the order of 5% to 12%, with similar reductions in GHG emissions. Hatch generates Marginal Abatement Cost Curves to optimize the implementation pathway, maximizing carbon abatement and minimizing cost. The findings of a practical case study from Cameco are presented.

Solar ponding to crystdlize sodium chloride has been used for thousands of years.1 The systems used were inefficient and usually small compared to the large 25,000 acre pond areas seen today. It has only been in the last 25 years that any real effort has been applied to develop solar ponding technology. Many large solar pond systems have been constructed without much thought to efficient and optimum production rates. The recent high costs of labor, of equipment and of energy have forced producers to take a closer look at their solar pond systems in an attempt to squeeze out the highest possible yields. Other companies such as the Arab Potash Company, the Dead Sea Works, Texas Gulf (Moab, Utah) and San Francisco Salt Companies have no more land area in which to expand and therefore efficient ponds are essential. This paper is written to show how the subdivision of solar ponds can result in production increases of up to 20% and beyond.

This paper discusses some of the materials, processes and systems used in motor insulation. Among the materials mentioned are epoxies, polyesters, mica paper composites and wire enamels. Two processes developed to take advantage of the special characteristics of two of these materials are described, and how these materials are used in several new insulation systems now on the market is discussed. Finally, future trends in motor insulation are outlined.

Estimates of the cost of producing any commodity generally fall into several classes depending upon the motives and needs of the estimator. There are estimates intended to show how low costs might be with favorable conditions if everything goes well. At the other extreme, there are estimates which show how high costs might be if troubles develop. The estimates in this paper for the cost of producing direct reduced iron (DRI) are accompanied by discussion to point out how the final figures may be adjusted in either a promotional or a conservative direction. Because we do not have a specific process and a particular set of conditions in mind when discussing this subject today, this paper deals with the general situation, with considerable attention to how the estimates can be made more specific once one knows the particulars of a given situation.

Many organizations are realizing that continual improvement in health and safety relies on addressing the potential for various forms of human error. Of these, violations are often the most frequent form associated with accidents. These occur when an individual, or individuals, deliberately contravenes established and known safety rules. They have been associated with up to 90% of accidents and incidents in some industries and yet rarely receive the systematic attention they deserve in the promotion of safety. This paper presents underlying motives which cause violations. These can vary significantly from mine to mine and from job to job. Managers need some measure of attitudes to determine the underlying motives behind violations if they are to determine effective strategies for promoting safe behaviour. Questionnaires form the starting point to address attitudes and the motives behind rule violations. The choice of the most suitable questionnaire, however, will vary from organization to organization. Guidelines on the choice of questionnaire are offered.

Embankment dams constructed mainly of sand or non-plastic fine soils are susceptible to liquefaction, particularly in high-rainfall, high-seismicity environments where there is sufficient water to saturate the materials and sufficient energy from an earthquake to cause liquefaction. This paper shows the process adopted to review the stability of an existing cross-valley, centreline-raised cyclone tailings sand embankment dam.The study showed that two-dimensional stability analyses did not sufficiently capture the potential for instability, overestimating the depth of the critical failure surface. Instead, three-dimensional modelling was required to provide a reasonable representation. Post-liquefaction stability analyses carried out using the three-dimensional model indicated an adequate factor of safety (FoS). The FoS under seismic conditions was still considered to be a concern based on pseudostatic analyses (but noting the limitations of the analysis method).Earthquake-induced settlements were estimated using an empirical approach based on case history records (Swaisgood, 2003). The post-earthquake event settlement was estimated to be in the order of 600 mm, which is considered to be acceptable for the embankment, taking account of the proposed long-term freeboard of more than 8 m under operating conditions and 2 m under the probable maximum flood condition.CITATION:Chapman, P J, Wrench, B P and Gowan, M J, 2015.
