How often does one hear that a recent feasibility study was not a success? Alternatively, when scope of the feasibility study was sent out to tender there was a large discrepancy in tendered prices. If the tendered prices were to be compared to the consumer market, for instance the purchase of a car, where the concept is transport in a controlled and safe manner, prices vary by large factors, but then so do the specifications. In the case of a feasibility study, prices should be within a tighter margin as the tenderers are all quoting against the same concept and specification. Why do these discrepancies occur? Price discrepancies will in every likelihood be attributed to two main factors; one, the perceived amount of work and two, the ability of the bidder to carry the risk associated with the feasibility study. It is, therefore, important that the scoping of the feasibility study covers the detailed requirements as clearly as possible stating what level of accuracy is required. The feasibility study is one of the first activities in the life of a project. The study, like the project it is investigating, is subject to the constraints of time, cost and quality. Its primary objectives are to demonstrate the viability of a project within the outlined scope and constraints.

Sphalerite flotation using copper sulfate has been performed in the industry for decades and the mechanism of Cu activation is well established. Despite its ubiquity, many practical questions surrounding copper sulfate persist. It is not clear how iron selectivity is achieved in zinc circuits given the propensity of iron sulfides to be activated by copper. Also, the large variation in copper sulfate dosages across different plants and ore types cannot be explained. Lastly, Zn flotation with greatly reduced copper sulfate dosages attracts significant interest and has been demonstrated in certain laboratory settings, but no information is available on why those laboratory solutions have not been adopted in plant practice. Flotation studies are presented that demonstrate that Zn flotation with very low copper sulfate dosages is possible when using certain novel collectors that are not practised in the industry. However, these reagent schemes are impractical because of a heretofore unappreciated and critical role that copper sulfate plays in Fe rejection. With both very low and standard copper sulfate dosages, copper sulfate influences both Zn flotation and Fe rejection. The results highlight the multifaceted role of copper sulfate in zinc flotation and the need to holistically consider complex systems’ behaviour to understand flotation reagent mechanisms and optimise plant performance. Improvements which have been made in commericial flotation systems during the past fifty years have resulted more from trial and error methods in the mill than from research in the laboratory. Research has often provided explanations of why mill changes have improved the metallurgical process. Hopefully, in the next fifty years, changes in mill flowsheets will come about, primarily, as a result of research work. However, since minerals, in their infinite variety, cannot be reduced to a standard state, research on commercial ores will have only a local utility, and research on pure minerals will have little commercial application. What will emerge from research on pure systems are mechanisms of adsorption, and this in turn may throw some light on the very much more complex adsorption processes taking place in the pulps of commercial ores. Quartz, without a doubt, has been the subject of more research effort than any other mineral, but we are still a long way from completely understanding its behavior in flo¬tation. Hematite and calcite have received considerably less attention. Ores containing a mixture of all three minerals, however, are commercially important, and the iron deposits in Alabama have been extensively studied by the United States Bureau of Mines (1). The literature reveals no reports of research on synthetic mixtures of all three.

The categorization of artisanal and small-scale mining has a significant impact on perception and understanding of the sector, particularly from a livelihood perspective. Several developing countries classify different types of artisanal and small-scale mining based on legal status. Given the nature such activities, the tragedy of the commons theory has been applied to understand the inevitable environmental, economic, sociocultural, safety, and health negative externalities – which are products of informality and illegality. Consequently, formalization is a panacea to sustainability. This article aims to offer a conceptual organization and foundational knowledge for characterization of artisanal and small-scale mining. It seeks to identify existing literature on the subject to avoid replication and acknowledge other scholars. Moreover, the article aims to place the study within the context of existing literature, establishing relationships with other studies and why the research is necessary. This paper pinpoints gaps left from other studies in so far as the characterization of artisanal and small-scale mining is concerned. Thus, reviewing literature abetted in finding similarities and differences on how artisanal and small-scale mining is defined from a scholarly and legal basis. The paper ascertains major claims made by earlier research on this topic, such as environmental impacts, the lack of adequate regulatory framework, and presents querying and probing questions lacking from other studies.

The often-heard question "How can we interest young geologists and engineers in AIME?" is virtually the same as "How can we interest young geologists and engineers in the glamorous mining industry?" Many persons would reply that AIME and industry should improve their image by various devices aimed at high school students and teachers, boy scouts, and even grade school children. For more immediate results, I suggest that we concentrate our efforts at the professional level on students already identified as geol¬ogists and engineers. Why does our glamorous profession appear distinctly unglamorous to most of the engineers and geologists currently in college and graduate school? The answers seem quite simple to me. First, the profession talks almost exclusively to itself, seldom to the engineering or geologic public, and almost never to the lay public. Second, the industry has been overly conservative in all aspects of recruiting during an especially competitive and affluent period. Consequently, mining has taken a terrific public drubbing from preservationists who still portray its leaders as robber barons. SME and AIME have, of course, various commendable programs for enticing student interest, including student membership, the low dues for this membership, the somewhat reduced prices at which students can attend AIME meetings and buy AIME volumes, and the large number of AIME Student chapters on campuses. Obviously, more active encouragements are needed.

This paper considers the standard of ore reserve assessments required by lenders when presented to support requests for project based loans. The way lenders use this information to structure a suitable financial package shows why ore reserves should be measured by industry set standards. This in turn raises questions concerning the assumptions used to derive mineable reserves from geological reserves. Consideration of the variety of related problems highlights the need for assessments to be defined according to acceptable standards. These should also address the suitability of the methodology to the assumed configuration of the orebody; the degree of variance and relaibility of estimates of grade and tonnage presented; and the estimation of probability that ore will in practice fall within the defined limits. In an increasingly international marketplace it is appropriate to compare Australian industry requirements to those of similar overseas industries, in this case the United States. Lenders would like to see that individuals responsible for the preparation of ore reserve estimates are certified on the basis of their skill and expereince by an industry body such as The AusIMM. The paper discusses how each of the parameters indicated above may impact upon a lender's assessment of the viability of a project. A number of practical examples are presented where inaccuracies or inadequacies in ore reserve information have led to reduced project performance.

The haulage of muck from mines was first illustrated by Georg Agricola in De Re Metallica in the year 1556. In many of his ancient wood cuts he showed a crude car running on wooden rails. These wheels had no flanges. There were four pins sticking down from the car to guide it along the rails. Eventually they made the wheels of cast iron with flanges on them. In England, coal was hauled from the pit mouth to the nearest river or canal in "wains", or wagons, running on the common highways. These wains carried one chaldron of coal, weighing 2500 lbs and it took six horses to haul these wains over the atrocious roads of that day. Somebody, about 1760, invented a cast iron rail. These were cast iron troughs, 4 ft long laid on wooden sleepers. With these iron rails they found that one horse could do the work of six. But this U-shaped groove trapped all the dirt and grit. Somebody had the brilliant idea of attaching a flange to the inside of the wheel and from then on the rails were of timber protected against wear by a strap of iron. A common problem for many mines is insufficient total primary airflow or insufficient airflow in the correct places as the mine changes over its life. This has a number of impacts on the business operation and may result in the need for a major and unexpected capital upgrade of the system, cancellation of a planned production increase, reduction in production targets, increased operating costs, failure to provide contracted metals to customers or acceptance of substandard conditions in the workplace. In some cases, it can even result in premature closure of the mine. In recent times, higher metal prices have given an expected economic boost to many mines, potentially prolonging their life but simultaneously requiring the mine to develop to deeper depths or requiring assets such as shafts and fans to have their service life extended. Insufficient primary airflow is a particular problem in deeper mines as the ventilation circuits become longer, more convoluted, have higher shock losses and the actual airflow requirements increase due to a combination of leakage, dispersion of the workings and the problems of managing the additional heat loads due to higher virgin rock temperatures and autocompression. This paper discusses the reasons why mines experience unexpected shortfalls in primary ventilation capacity with its associated impacts on metal targets, profits and frequently on the health, safety and morale of the workforce, as well as its productivity.

In recent years a number of explosive blends including ANFO, emulsion and watergel products have been used in a variety of ground types and applications. These `standard' explosives' technologies are not new, but out of the uses and applications, have sprung a new generation of tailored explosives that match the ground type and the operating environment. This is in stark contrast to the norm, where various patterns and loading configurations have traditionally been designed to accommodate the explosive. This paper discusses these tailored explosives and the explosives' technology behind why they work. Active tailoring of explosive formulations can save mining dollars while essentially leaving the explosive price unchanged. Tailoring explosives may lead to increased rock breakage, heave, digging rates; lower digging maintenance costs and in some cases replacing earth moving machinery altogether. Tailored explosives may have other benefits such as reduced over pressure compared with standard alternatives. The tailoring of explosive performance generally involves three major methods (other than changing the bulk density and sensitivity): (i) replacing fast burning reactants with slower burning reactants or vice versa; or (ii) leaving the explosive intact and diluting the entire explosive with slow burning or `inert' material; or (iii) changing the concentration of the fuel/oxidiser mix. When tailoring explosives for particular applications, authorising, testing, costing, manufacturing, and delivery systems must also be taken into account.

RICHARDS, Boston, Mass.-I believe that the manner of working for efficiency in almost all lines is to study the conditions of highest efficiency, and then to measure what is being clone. We can then see how near we have approached the highest efficiency. Spigots in practice often use many times the water theoretically needed. There are places where that is necessary for safety reasons. There are, however, places where it is unnecessary, and in these places it seems to me that this work of Mr. Dudley's will be a great help to the mill man to arrive at the greatest economy of water and highest efficiency. (written discussiont).-Research work has often a more immediate and practical application to the in-dustries than even the investigators themselves realize, but coal mining has not attracted the investigator, except in so far as the mine-accident prevention work and fuel investigations are concerned. In future, the coal geologist will study the subsurface geology of the various coal seams as the petroleum geologist now studies the oil sands, and from the results of these studies the coal operator will be able to locate his shafts to the best possible advantage and to avoid faults that would interfere with underground work. There would have been many thousands of dollars saved, and perhaps some reputations, if a good stratigrapher. had been called into consultation in the southern part of Somerset County, Pa., where a local seam of coal, quite thick, was mistaken for the Pittsburgh seam, which, if ever present at that point, had long since been eroded. IT is a well-known fact to all Bessemer steel manufacturers using a blooming mill, that ingots show large cracks in the first few passes of the rolls, which, in the following ones, do not always roll up satisfactorily. This deficiency in the quality of the product is generally called " red-shortness," though, in the writer's opinion, mostly unjustly so. Different explanations for the said peculiarity are given by the leading authorities, each works selecting one element as a special scape-goat for the inferior quality of the ingot. The sulphur is generally first charged as being the principal cause of all mischief in this direction ; then, after ascertaining that sulphur is not higher than the average, and sometimes lower in the very worst heats, silicon has to bear its share of abuse. How and why silicon should affect the working qualities of the metal, the writer could never precisely learn, but is convinced that the doctrine of its pernicious influence is an established one with many. In cases where silicon failed to explain everything, resort was taken to calcium, aluminum, and some other known or unknown elements, without settling the difficulty; and lastly, when the skill of the chemist became exhausted, " practical men " came to the same conclusion, which many leading blast-furnace managers had arrived

It has already been said and written many times that the construction of tunnels in urban areas has proved more and more indispensable, if not vital. The subsequent development of tunnelling for 15 or 20 years has brought large and sometimes spectacular improvements in the fiel of execution methods. But, particularly in urban areas, the difficulties to be overcome have been and still remain very important. As a matter of fact, most of big cities, have been settled near rivers or lakes; therefore the geological nature of the subsoil is soft ground and the level of ground water is high. As a consequence, tunnelling is often faced with many well-known difficulties and dangers issued from decompression or loosening of the ground, sometimes accompanied by a lowering of the water table. This may compromise the safety of the excavation itself and of the workers, and also cause settlements which many severely damage nearby buildings or structures. This is the reason why it is always necessary to work out specially adapted methods and even to develop new ones. FuRnace-men of the present day agree very nearly as to the best cooling-devices for the protection of blast-furnace hearths and boshes, and the best location of the cooling-system in the brick-work for the maintenance of favorable furnacelines throughout the blast. The replaceable bronze and copper plates are practically faultless; and there seems to be no reason why a furnace-hearth and bosh should not be held in good condition, by intelligent management and the use of replaceable plates, for a period several times the length of the average blast of to-day. While furnace-men have taken these .precautions to protect the hearth and bosh beyond the life of the lining, the portion of the lining above the mantle has been partly protected by some and wholly neglected by others. Some would not construct a furnace without mantle-plates, and others would not construct a furnace with them. In most cases, furnace-men have either trusted to Providence or to the bosh-plates for the continuance of favorable working-conditions above the mantle, and the prolongation of the life of the lining; consequently furnaces are constantly blown out for repairs to the lining, or for relining, when the hearth and bosh are in good enough condition to last through another blast. Capital, as represented by mineral resources, is being exhausted rapidly without possibility of identical replacement. The public must be discouraged from thinking-why worry about the bank balance so long as there are plenty of blank checks? Instead of each man, woman, and child being owners of a mineral capital of $89,000 as former Secretary Ickes once stated, they are really the guardians of a mineral reserve which, when harvested, cannot be reproduced. The proper use of this material is the basis of modern civilization and military power. The best American institutions cannot be maintained or transmitted to our children unless this trust is guarded. It is unfortunate that more attention has not been focused on the fact that this country is headed for a have-not status in the family of great nations if some- thing is not done to preserve its mineral heritage. It is the privilege of the United States now to champion and implement democracy because it is industrialized and can get at its raw materials. A high price is being paid every day in mineral depletion for the privilege. No one can eat his cake and have it too. "The idea for this talk came to me last year when I was attending the Canadian Gold Metallurgists Meeting. I talked about it to a friend of mine who is an authority on mineral dressing, particularly the theoretical end of the business. He remarked that this was an excellent technical note, why don't you write it up. This is what I have for presentation this morning. I hope in presenting this type of idea in this way it is in keeping with the tradition of the Canadian Gold Metallurgists which was to function on a not too sophisticated level and where operators could get together and trade ideas in an informal way.My basic thesis is that it should be possible to evaluate screen analyses by the application of the standard statistical probability theory. In any statistical analysis the sample is the first consideration. If we look at existing methods of size evaluation we find it is usually based on the fact that a given particle will pass one square aperature and not another. One system of standardizing how these aperatures will be set up is based on Rittenger' s work with the ratio of hole sizes proportional to the square root of 2. Keeping in mind the limitation we have accepted this as our method of 11 sizing"" in attempting to apply standard statistical methods to screen analysis."

General. Copper, the first metal used by man, today is the third in consumption after iron and aluminum. Compared to these it is relatively rare, with less than 0.01% of the earth's crust copper, 8% aluminum, and 5% iron. Nevertheless. our modern civilization is heavily dependent upon copper because of its high conductivity and resistance to corrosion, ease of working, durability, wide range of properties by virtue of its readiness to form alloys with other metals, and its attractive colors and texture that make it so desirable for many crafts and arts. These attributes explain why copper is chosen for a long list of uses, including electrical wiring, switchgear, and bus bars; piping, roofing, and siding; and manufactures of brass, bronze, and other alloys. The fact that copper ore is mined in nearly all parts of the world is significant. Its importance is shown in Table I, which gives figures on world production from 1968 to 1977. In the Free World, North and South America and Africa are preeminent. The table also shows the generally upward trend of production in this period; accurate figures for 1978 and 1979 from the same source are not yet available (1980), but it is certain that major environmental, economical, and political factors continued to disturb the industry in those years and into 1980.

TANTALUM and columbium are newcomers in the world of metals. Many of the metals described in this volume had been known and used for centuries before either tantalum or columbium was known to exist. The scarcity of the ores and the comparative difficulty of extraction delayed their technology until specialized methods of processing could be developed. HISTORY Early in the nineteenth century, 1801, Hatchett discovered a new oxide, which he called columbium oxide, and a year later, Ekeberg announced that he had found a new element, which he named tantalum. The preparation of the metal tantalum in impure form was first announced by Berzelius in 1824, but the actual production of ductile metal did not occur until 1903, when von Bolton, of Siemens and Halske, developed a process for the production of tantalum pure enough to be drawn into electric-lamp filament wire. The use of tantalum as a filament wire began to decline when ductile tungsten was introduced in 1909. In 1921, C. W. sake, of Fansteel Metallurgical Corporation, produced the first ingot of tantalum metal in America. The first ingot of columbium was produced in 1927 in the laboratory of the same company. A new Scramble has hit the African continent. This Scramble has many drivers: the 1978 Deng Xiao Ping liberalizations in China; the 1989 collapse of the Soviet empire; the ICT revolution; the ease of global communications. The underlying dynamic is the end of the bipolar world of the Cold War and its replacement with multipolarity. According to HSBC (2011), in 2050 China will be the world?s largest economy, with India number 3 and Brazil number 7. Russia will be 15th (below its old rival, Turkey). South Africa maybe ranked 30th, yet has been invited to join the exclusive (BRIC) club. One has to ask, why? It is sad to note how low South Africa is assessed to be?currently it is around number 24 in the world; the reason for the fall is that the HSBC model includes population growth, and it is in this domain that South Africa is a loser, being constrained by the impact of HIV/AIDS on its life expectancy. The original four BRIC nations include the factory of the world (China), the garden of the world (Brazil), the gas station of the world (Russia), and the back office of the world (India). South Africa comes to the club both as jeweller of the world and as gatekeeper. China, Brazil, and Russia all have considerable expertise in mining exploration, extraction, and processing.
