Rolling disc cutters are the business end of hard-rock and mixed-face tunnel boring machines (TBMs). Since their first successful employment on a TBM more than 50 years ago, disc cutter technology has constantly evolved, allowing modern TBMs to excavate very hard and abrasive rock efficiently. Disc cutters have also been employed successfully on earth pressure balance (EPB) and slurry machines, cutting rock under water and ground pressure. The range of materials excavated by machines today is broader, excavation rates are higher and cutter costs are lower than ever before, proving the value of investment in cutter development. Disc cutters are used on a range of tunneling equipment, from pipe jacked slurry micro-TBMs less than 1 m (3.3 ft) in diameter to 15 m (49 ft) in diameter, hard-rock boring TBMs. The geological conditions under which they are employed range from sands and gravels, with several bar of water pressure, to extremely hard, massive rock with UCS up to 420 MPa. Regardless of the type of machine or geology, one thing remains constant: changing worn out cutters is costly. When cutters must be changed in the middle of a tunnel, the contractor incurs the cost of downtime as well as the cost of refurbishing or replacing the cutters. In the case of catastrophic cutter failures, the project can be stopped completely for long periods, and the costs mount up rapidly while tunnel production is at a stand still. Catastrophic cutter failures include the occasion when hard-rock disc cutters are failed in groups (called a ?wipeout? phenomenon) and the operator fails to stop the machine, which results in severe damage to the cutterhead. The cause of this can be either an undetected failed cutter propagating damage to surrounding cutters or operator error in steering. Regardless of the cause, the resulting damage can take days or even weeks to repair. When cutters fail prematurely on EPB or slurry machines in certain geological conditions, it is impossible to evacuate the chamber and, therefore, impossible to get [ ] into the chamber to change the cutters. The solution is frequently an unplanned intervention shaft that must be sunk at great cost. The importance of being able to predict cutter life accurately, and in all geological conditions, cannot be overemphasized. For these reasons, cutters have been developed for specific machine types and sizes, as well as for specific geological operating conditions. Different size cutters are required for different size machines. For example, while 483- and 508-mm (19- and 20-in.) cutters are used on large diameter TBMs, it is impossible to employ cutters so large on a small micro-TBM. Also, the cutter must be designed for the specific geological conditions under which it will be operating. The disc cutter rings required to bore extremely hard rock are the most expensive of cutter rings. However, they provide little advantage in weaker rock formations where less expensive rings will do the job as well. It is important to choose the correct cutter for the machine and the geological conditions in order to get the best balance of cost and risk.

With the success of their existing casino operation on the Ohio River in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, the Indiana Gaming Co., LP planned a major expansion of the current facilities. This expansion includes a second 1400+/- car parking garage, a new surface parking lot, elevated walkways, and a new floating casino that will double their present square footage and consolidate all of the gaming activity to one floor. In March of 2006 Richard Goettle, Inc. was awarded the general contract to construct a 260? x 520? boat slip for the new Argosy VII floating casino. An Open Cell® bulkhead system was specified as the means for constructing the new slip. Our contract included the purchase and installation of 300,000 square feet of PS27.5 sheet pile, excavation of 230,000 cubic yards of soil, and a 3300 square foot Mechanically Stabilized Earth wall.

Compliance with Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) exposure regulation is currently performed using timeweighted average (TWA) sampling on underground mine workers. These samples are collected in the span of an entire shift and the resulting concentrations are compared to a legislated exposure limit. While this is very useful to determine the exposure level of an individual to DPM, it fails to clearly identify causes of exposure and highlight opportunities that could help reduce the exposure of workers in the course of the work shift. Real-time DPM monitoring measures the worker?s exposure as a function of time and helps identify circumstances where corrective actions can be taken or design changes can be made by the individual or the employer to reduce the overall exposure of the worker and peers. This work focused on obtaining DPM concentrations using a real-time polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) monitor. The aim was to demonstrate that this instrument, while not a direct DPM analyzer, was able to provide a concentration profile that could easily be linearly correlated to standard TWA elemental carbon measurements. In addition, several instances of improvements that could be implemented to reduce the exposure of underground employees were demonstrated.

Mineralisation was identified at Gladstone Hill as far back as the late 1870s-early 1880s, shortly after the initial discovery of mineralisation at what is now the Martha Mine. Indeed, early recovery problems associated with the Martha mineralisation led to the preferred development of ore bodies within what is now the Union Hill Joint Venture tenement; ore bodies such as Silverton, Amaranth, and Union to name a few. Gladstone Hill forms the basis of the Union Hill Joint Venture, a 50:50 joint venture managed by Au-Ag Resources Ltd (a fully owned subsidiary of Otter Gold Mines Ltd), and Welcome Gold Mines Ltd (a fully owned subsidiary of the Normandy Group). The joint venture participants also operate the adjacent Martha Mine. Mineralisation of Gladstone Hill, as with mineralisation at the adjacent Martha Mine, has been interpreted as a low sulphidation epithermal Ag-Au system hosted within hydrothermally altered andesites of the lower Coromandel Group. Drilling in recent years has successfully identified extensive mineralisation associated with a number of vein sets throughout the tenement including the Gladstone Vein set, the Moonlight Lode and more recently along a north-easterly trend towards the historic Favona workings. A wide range of vein styles is apparent, ranging in character from thin stock works to broader lode-style banded chalcedonic to cherty quartz and have been interpreted as representing multiple phases of emplacement. At shallower levels mineralisation is often hosted by vein clasts within vent breccias. Visible gold is rare, with mineralisation generally associated with very fine-grained pyrite, arsenopyrite and minor electrum. Percentage levels of combined sphalerite-galena-(+/- chalcopyrite) have been intersected at depth however these have been gold poor to date. The potential for the Gladstone Hill area remains to be clearly defined as drilling to date has yet to close off mineralisation both along strike and down dip. If further drilling is successful, the joint venture partners believe Gladstone Hill could contribute significantly to the economic future of current operations.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Otago Schist belt of southern New Zealand hosts widespread orogenic gold deposits. Erosion of these orogenic gold deposits has led to the formation of numerous placer deposits distributed across and beyond the host schist belt. Numerical modelling of crustal scale deformation and geomorphic evolution has defined the key tectonic features that have controlled the severance of detrital gold deposits from their sources. Tectonic activity over the past 20 million years, during development of the modern Pacific-Australian plate boundary, has severed links between some placers and their sources. Detrital gold was transported south from the Otago Schist source region in two different river systems in the Miocene. Mesozoic orogenic gold deposits shed gold into rivers that flowed to the south. These rivers were terminated by the rise of north-west-trending basement ridges at the boundary between weak schist crust and strong greywacke crust, and the ridges were controlled by pre-existing faults at that rheological boundary. In contrast, rising mountains close to the developing plate boundary in the Miocene were the locus of new orogenic gold deposits hosted in extensional faults. These gold deposits were rapidly exhumed and contributed detrital gold to orogen-parallel Miocene rivers that flowed to the south-west. Pleistocene deformation on mainly north-west and north-east orientations, and associated river capture, has severed the links between these Miocene orogenic deposits and downstream detrital gold.CITATION:Craw, D and Upton, P, 2015. Lignite deposits of Central Otago Miocene Dunstan Formation accumulated on a broad alluvial plain and on deltas that flanked a large freshwater lake. The regional subsurface distribution and configuration of the lignite-bearing strata are identified within the context of depositional systems and placed into a genetically defined stratigraphic framework. The stratigraphic and depositional models constructed, should form an integral part of the geological assessment process to guide future regional or mine based lignite drilling programmes. Further testing and evaluation of the commercialy important lignite deposits in the Blackstone and Roxburgh Coalfields are required to adequately characterise the lignites and their geological setting, particularly to select methods of mining and wise uses of the lignite.

Field studies of the radiations backscattered by iron ores from a 60Co source of primary gamma radiation located in a borehole logging probe have confirmed thatthe P" factor, a ratio of high energy gamma ray intensities to low energy intensities in selected energy windows of the backscattered gamma-ray spectrum, is a valuable measure of grade for sedimentary iron ores of the Pilbararegion of Western Australia.Laboratory studies of model boreholes have shown that variations in borehole diameter and variations in bulk density of the formations have a significant influence on the measurement of P" ratios. If these influences 'are taken into account the mean ore grade in a new blast hole, for instance, can be predicted with a probe of suitable configuration to within 0·8 per cent Fe at the 95 per cent confidence level, while the grade of a single 120-cm split can be determined to within 2·6 per cent Fe. These results were obtained by pooling data from five blast holes covering the range of iron concentrations 20-68 per cent Fe and apply to the mean hole grades 54-68 per cent Fe.Results for two development holes were generally comparable to those obtained from individual blast holes95 per cent confidence limits of ±0·9 per cent Fe for mean ore grade and ± 4·1 per cent Fe for single splits. A greater number of data points is needed before these confidence limits can be further improved.The technique utilized to obtain these results was derived from a "multiband" approach to collection of backscattered spectral intensity data, an approach which permitted selection at the data processing stage of the most statistically significant P" ratios for the type of mineralization encountered in the field. The multiband technique also permitted selection of the most significant of another set of windows in the backscattered gammarayspectrum to measure a newly developed "S-factor", a ratio sensitive to borehole diameter. Another window provided information on bulk density. All these measurements were made with a single pass of the same loggingprobe.

Combustion processes, comminution and materials handling can generate airborne particulates. Regulation of these particulates by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) is becoming progressively more stringent, and regulations will soon include ?nanoparticulates,? which are particles finer than 100 nanometers (0.1 mm). Nanoparticulates are believed to have significant negative health effects due to their high surface area and reactivity. Although it was argued that nanoparticulate concerns were only important for combustion, studies at Michigan Technological University have shown that materials handling and comminution release significant quantities of nanoparticles into the air. Laboratory studies have shown that the use of sodium metasilicate reduced airborne particles finer than 10 mm (PM10) by 86% and particles finer than 2.5 mm (PM2.5) by 80% for iron ore. Additional studies were conducted that revealed that nanoparticulate emissions were present in the types of operations conducted at pyrometallurgical facilities.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study to determine the effectiveness of a filtered air delivery system to reduce respirable dust exposure to roof bolter operators in underground coal mines. When performing roof bolting operations, roof bolter operators may experience exposure to high levels of respirable dust during a working shift, especially when working downwind of the continuous mining machine. While drilling and installing roof bolts, this filtered air system supplies a clean curtain of air over the roof bolter operator by means of a plenum mounted beneath the canopy. This experimentally designed air curtain, adapted for roof bolting machines used in this study, is based upon previous design prototypes, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, and trial-and-error testing. Both prototype and final designs were tested in the full-scale mining galleries at the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) in Pittsburgh before being taken underground for field testing. Test results of the system in both laboratory and field studies show reductions in operator exposure to respirable dust when the operator is positioned directly under the protected zone of the canopy.

The Calypso geothermal field, mapped by the R V Sonne (cruise SO-135) in 1998, includes four main sites, the Northern Vent Area (centred on 37¦ 36.7'S, 177¦ 06.2'E, area 1.5 km2), Central Vent Area (37¦ 39.4'S, 177¦ 05.2'E, 1 km2), Southern Vent Area (37¦ 41.7'S, 177¦ 06.0'E, 1 km2) and Mercury Vent Area (37¦ 41.3'S, 177¦ 07.3 'E, 0.5 km2). Hydrothermal activity at the vent sites is controlled by minor, sub-parallel NE-trending normal faults. Gas bubble trails (C02) and shimmering hot water vent from fractures and joints between large blocks of silicified volcaniclastics and in depressions in the sediments at the base of these outcrops. Measured maximum vent temperatures are between 180¦C and 201¦C. Venting fluids are at, or just below, boiling for water depths of 200 m. Rock samples recovered by dredge from the sites include massive anhydrite, clay-altered pumiceous ash, silicified volcaniclastic sediments and volcaniclastic breccias cemented by sulphur. Clay-altered samples, dominated by randomly interstratified illite-smectite and accessory chlorite, indicate formation environments of 70¦C to 90 ¦C. Native sulphur is abundant throughout the samples. Fine-grained (<1 mm) disseminated pyrite and vein pyrite occurs in the clay-altered pumiceous volcaniclastics and argillites. In the Southern and Mercury Vent Areas, fine-grained orpiment, realgar and cinnabar have deposited in the sandy matrix of volcaniclastic breccias. Amongst the cinnabar, small (<2 mm) beads of native Hg formed on the surface of several rocks following their recovery. These samples also contained abundant light hydrocarbons, which coat the rocks with an oily sheen.

Safety is the No. 1 concern of any drill contractor or mine operator. Everyone in the industry knows a safe site helps stabilize operational costs and enables higher productivity. When it comes to exploration drilling, research has proven a majority of injuries are caused by the mishandling of coring rods. A driller helper will typically handle up to 50 rods per shift or up to 15,000 rods per year. With an annual 340 t (750,000 lb) in rods managed by hand, the risk of serious injury is extremely high. The quality of Pregnant Leach Solution (PLS) at Skorpion Zinc is of utmost importance for efficient operation of the Solvent Extraction (SX) Plant. Suspended solids in the PLS forms CRUD in the settlers, resulting in reduced zinc transfer capacity and increased impurity carry over to Electrowinning. The Ishigaki Fibre-Wakishimizu filter (fibre media rapid filtration equipment) has been identified as polishing filter that potentially could remove solids from the PLS of Skorpion Zinc. A pilot unit with 20m³/h capacity was tested on site over a period of 9 months under plant operating conditions in the refinery. The FW filter produces a clear filtrate, acceptable for the Solvent Extraction. Turbidity is improved by 72%. Gravimetric analysis indicates a 47% removal of solids. However, the gravimetric method is biased by a co-precipitation of saturated salts during the analysis. Filter media is blinded by the Skorpion Zinc PLS solution, as result of suspended solids and process chemistry. The media could not be regenerated to acceptable conditions. Further testwork to investigate the impact of process solution chemistry modification on blinding is undertaken. Based on the outcome of this investigation a final decision on the FW filter can be taken.

Provide improved permanent stoppings designed specifically for use in mines with large cross-sectional entries. Approach The large entry sizes in many mines, such as oil shale, salt, and limestone, make the conventional stopping construction techniques used in smaller opening mines unacceptable. The Bureau of Mines and Colorado Mining Association jointly sponsored a contract to design and test new or modified stopping concepts for these mines. The most promising concepts were then tested in an oil-shale mine having 30-foot-high by 55-foot-wide mine entry openings. All stopping designs tested were evaluated in terms of cost, air tightness, and resistance to blast damage.

In 2000, Laubscher’s Mining Rock Mass Rating (MRMR) classification system was updated and published. The new system brought a few fundamental changes that were in direct response to the challenges and problems encountered when applying the classification system in the mining environment, specifically caving operations. The fundamental changes introduced into the MRMR system in 2000 were the abandonment of the Rock Quality Designation (RQD) as an input parameter, accounting for healed and cemented joints, and the concept of rock block strength. The objective of this paper is not to discuss the role and usefulness of classification systems; the fact that classification systems are widely used in every stage of mining projects speaks for itself. This paper discusses some of the experiences gained with the MRMR 2000 system in various mining projects and shows how the changes to the system have resulted in improved assessment of rock mass conditions. Issues related to core logging for rock mass assessment are also presented.

High speed diamond cutting has extensive applications in civil and mining engineering. A project involving the diamond sawing of black granite is investigating the nature of the diamond cutting process. A sawing machine was devised to adjust the cutting load and measure cutting speed. Cuttings were collected for size distribution analysis. The surface produced by interaction between diamond. grits and the rock was subjected to microscopic investigation. Increasing load prompts the proportional increase in the cutting rate. But the mean size of cuttings shows little change. The photomicrographs of the cutting tracks indicate neither patterns of crack formation nor signs of the ductile behaviour of the rock. A diamond cutting model for hard rock is formulated on these observations. Diamond cutting is a process of surface failure, which advances in four stages. The polycrystalline characteristics of a hard rock and the action of high-speed diamond grits guarantee the creation of crack nuclei which develop into cracks in various directions. This network crisscrossing cracks enable the stripping of this surface layer from the rock.

Pre-concentration of precious metal and base metal ore types is becoming more relevant with the discovery, development and operation of many lower grade deposits around the world. The fluctuations in metal prices expose many mines to risks especially dealing with low and variable ore grades.Pre-concentration, the process of concentrating the valuable metal into a smaller mass yield, effectively results in the introduction of higher feed grades to milling circuits. Gangue Rejection, the removal of lower S.G. waste rock from the circuit not only results in higher downstream grades but also potentially removes harder, non-valuable mineral, providing significant power savings within the circuit. The pre-concentration or ‘gangue rejection’ process offers a number of benefits when considering the treatment of marginal ore deposits, especially if it can be performed at a coarse crush size; these benefits include a reduction of the operating costs and the feed of more metal units to the mill.Gekko Systems has effectively utilized the Inline Pressure Jig (IPJ) to pre-concentrate the valuable metal, achieving high primary recoveries into a range of mass yields resulting in upgrade ratios between 2 and 10 times.This paper explores the benefits of pre-concentrating ‘marginal’ ore deposits prior to the milling circuit; the selective rejection of ore types that may affect either the recovery or comminution process, and also looks into the potential to effectively reduce the ‘cut-off’ grade when considering the mine planning process. Case studies of projects using the IPJ to pre-concentrate and reject gangue are also included.Pre-concentration and gangue rejection provide the potential to develop marginal ore deposits, thus providing higher grades, less gangue and more metal at a lower operating cost to producers.CITATION:Grigg, N J and Delemontex, G J, 2015. In recent years, tellurium has been extensively used in the manufacture of semiconductor materials. For this type of application, high-purity tellurium is required. Selenium, lead and silicon are usually the main impurities in tellurium. During the electrolytic refining of copper, tellurium gold and silver are collected in the anode slimes. A pyrometallurgical treatment is used to recover gold and silver from the decopperized anode slimes whereas tellurium is oxidized and skimmed off from the refining furnace as a Na2CO3-based slag. In the slag, tellurium is present as sodium tellurite (Na2TeO3), which is further water-leached from the slag. The first step in the conventional process for tellurium recovery consists of the precipitation of the tellurium contained in the leaching solution as tellurium dioxide (TeO2). The solid TeO2 is then dissolved under acidic conditions for its further reduction with sulfur dioxide gas (SO2). In this paper, an alternative route for tellurium production is presented in which a sodium tellurate [Na2TeO4] intermediate is obtained by oxidation of the sodium tellurite in an alkaline solution following the water leaching step. Sodium tellurate is then dissolved in acid media and high-purity tellurium is obtained by reduction with SO2 gas. Experimental tests under laboratory conditions indicate that the novel process yields higher precipitation selectivity for tellurium than the conventional process. A comparison of its efficiency concerning impurities co-precipitation with respect to the conventional process is discussed.
