The area will bustle once again with activity as commuters and visitors converge on the modern transit station at the edge of Seattle's International District. Buses coming from south Interstate 5 and Interstate 90 will enter the tunnel through this station. [ ] International District Station is an open-air station, 1,060 feet long and 82 feet wide (about 15,400 cubic yards of concrete were used to build the station). A concrete lid over the southern portion of the station staging area is held in place by 131 support piles. The station will include entrances on Jackson Street and King Street. Union Pacific Realty is planning to build an office and retail complex upon the lid. The station also has an international flair. Symbols of the Chinese zodiac will be etched into the station plaza floor. The station platform walls will be lined with large steel panels embellished with designs in origami?a Japanese folded paper art form. [ ]

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the results of modifications in the borehole deformation gage design and subsequent changes in the overcoring techniques. Modifications in the borehole deformation gage have greatly improved the creep characteristics and enhanced the versatility of the gage. In situ field tests in competent rock near St. Cloud, Minn., provided sufficient data to compare the reliability between gages and new techniques in obtaining good engineering estimates of stresses. Near-surface horizontal stresses at the test sites are compressive and biaxial in nature.

Metallurgists and coal-washing engineers have used heavy liquids for years in studying the characteristics of ores and coal. By such means true separations can be made between the various specific-gravity increments in the materials examined. To use of heavy liquids has permitted determination of the possible grades of tailings and concentrates by specific-gravity methods on any particular size, and therefore the size to which the ore must be crushed to free the valuable material. The simplicity of float-and-sink separation and the high degree of efficiency attained in the laboratory are factors that commend the method for commercial concentrations.

Three properties in the Tuolumne River RARE II area, the Eagle Bluff Mine (lode) and the Indian Creek Bar and Bossy Bar Prospects (placer), have identified subeconomic gold resources (table 1). Nineteen other properties have potential for gold resources. Adjacent to the study area, five properties have identified mineral resources, and nine others have potential for resources. Properties having high-grade zones (shoots), but licking enough tonnage to be classified as resources, are listed in table 2. Gold, in lode and placer deposits, is the principal mineral commodity in the Toluene River study area. Ten properties within the RARE II boundary have gold-rich zones or shoots; they range in size from 12 to 2,500 tons and in average grade from 0.09 to 0.97 oz gold per ton.

To aid industry and Government in planning water developments the Bureau of Mines in 1963 canvassed mineral producers to determine water use in 1962. Water use by the mineral industry comprises only 2 percent of the water withdrawn by industry as a whole. The major water-using mineral industries are natural gas processing, phosphate rock, sand and gravel, and iron ore. Analysis indicated the following conclusions: 1. Total water use and new water intake is dependent on the quantity of material processed and the process water requirements of the particular industry or commodity. 2. Recirculation is dependent on the processing requirements of a particular commodity, the manner in which the water is used, cooling and condensing requirements in certain large industries, the quality of new water intake, and the need to treat new and discharged water. 3. Consumed water is dependent on the quantity of water recirculated, the temperature and humidity in the area, and the proportion of water used for cooling and condensing. 4. This publication summarizes the in-house and contract research and development projects programed for fiscal year 1981 by the Bureau of Mines under its Minerals Environmental Technology activity. The document provides a mechanism for interested parties, including potential contractors, to gain insight into ongoing and projected work of the Bureau?s environmental research efforts. Research to identify and correct environmental problems associated with mining and metallurgical operations has long been an integral part of the Bureau's mission. The environmental research and demonstration activities of the Bureau were consolidate in 1979 with the formation of the Minerals Environmental Technology program, which is directed toward the elimination or reduction of environmental problems associated with the extraction and processing of minerals. Among the efforts underway are development of data and technology for assessing the potential environmental impact of minerals development, for monitoring minerals extraction operations, and for establishing viable reclamation requirements on abandoned mine lands; development and demonstration of technology 'or control of environmental disturbances during minerals extraction operations; development and demonstration of land reclamation and mine closure techniques to restore or enhance the productive use of mined lands; development of engineering techniques that incorporate state-of-the-art mining environmental technology in the design and planning of minerals extraction operations; development and demonstration of new mining systems that greatly reduce or eliminate the adverse environmental impacts of minerals extraction; and providing the technologic base for Federal, State, and local establishment of environmental standards for mining operations. Included in the minerals-processing-related work are projects to clean mineral-processing waters: demonstrate a Bureau process for scrubbing SO from powerplant stack :;as; recover dissolved minerals from process streams; stabilize discarded dusts, slags, and tailings: remove hazardous contaminates from byproduct wastes; reduce generation of waste solids; and improve metallurgical process engineering to eliminate pollution. Approximately $21 million was appropriated for this work in fiscal year 1981.

The Bureau of Mines, in support of its overall goal of helping to meet future U.S. demand for minerals, undertook this study to aid the quarry entrepreneur and/or operator in developing quarries near urban areas. In response to increased environmental concerns, the quarry operator often must take steps beyond those required in the last decade toward gaining permits for quarrying near metropolitan areas. Following the steps suggested in this report should increase the chances to obtain the permits to open and develop a quarry. Each task and question in the general plan flow diagrams are described in detail, with the flow diagrams aimed at the goal of acquiring the necessary permits. The appendixes include (1) types of projects for which Environmental Impact Statements (EIS's) may be prepared and Federal agencies responsible for preparing them, (2) State contacts for information regarding environmental impact assessment requirements and mining and mineral land reclamation laws, (3) a checklist of environmental inventory factors, (4) a tabulation of different regulations that affect mining in Michigan and the number of townships and counties that have each of the listed regulations, and (5) environmental logic associated with site selection. A central recommendation is that the quarry entrepreneur and/or operator coordinate plans at the beginning with local government officials (such as township supervisors and/or city and county planning board members), State and Federal officials, and public groups that will be affected.

The design and fabrication of an engineering model and three prototypes of a portable gas analyzer and sapling system is herein described. This design effort has provided a battery operated system which will indicate the degree of explosivity of return air and in the air beyond the seal during the course of fighting, sealing and quenching a mine fire. Performance tests, design criticisms and recommendations for designs are also included. The system is based on two analyzers: the MSA Catalytic Combustible Gas Analyzer for indication of total combustible gas concentration and a modified, totally automated version of an Analytical Instrument Development Corporation Model 622 gas chromatograph (CC) for analysis of individual gases. The system provides continuous monitoring of combustible gas level in the range of 0 to 100% LEL. The GC automatic analysis requires a 5 minute cycle time to update the concentration indications for: hydrogen @ 0 to 10% oxygen @ 0 to 25% nitrogen @ 0 to 100%, methane @ 0 to 10 or 0 to 50%, carbon monoxide @ 0 to 5% and carbon dioxide @ 0 to 10%. CC peak heights are translated into concentration units which are memorized and continuously displayed on Integral meter readouts. The underground analyzer system design was reviewed and tested by the MESA Approval and Certification Group and found to meet intrinsic safety requirements. The three underground packages consists of: a gas chromatograph with dimensions of 11" X 12" X 16" and weighing 25 lbs. , an electronics unit 10" X 14" X 19" in size and weighing 30 lbs., and a power pack 6" X 14" X 16" in size and weighing 45 lbs. Two AC/DC power supplies are provided for aboveground battery charging and system operation in the laboratory. The Tenth International Conference of Directors of Safety in Mines Research was held in the United States from September 28 through October 2, 1959, at Hotel Webster Hall, Pittsburgh, Pa. The Conference was organized by the Federal Bureau of Mines. In accord with the program outlined at the Ninth Conference (1956, Heerlen, Holland), the papers submitted dealt with the following three subjects: 1. Safety of coal mine explosives 2. Explosion hazards in mines 3. Ignition and fires in mines Seventy papers were presented. There were eight technical sessions followed by an extended tour of the Bruceton facility of the Bureau of Mines on October 2. Simultaneous translation was provided in the three official languages of the Conference--English, French, and German.

The Western Mining Training and Translation Center is a consortium of four universities devoted to developing educational and training projects to reduce the incidence/accident rates in the mining industry. The center consists of Missouri University of Science and Technology, Montana Tech, the Colorado School of Mines and the University of Utah. It is fully funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The center manages 15 educational projects and one translation project. Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) for Small Mines is an educational project managed by the University of Utah. The objectives of this project are to identify critical mine hazards, assess risks; outline procedures to reduce accident/incident rates in small mines in the western United States and to train mine workers and super-visors on HIRA in each participating mine. To accomplish these objectives, the HIRA personnel visited 15 small mines in Utah, Colorado, Nevada and California. At these mines, most operators were employing independent contractors to perform several tasks ranging from drilling, blasting and mucking of rock at the work site to hauling ore to a processing plant. The operation of diesel-powered equipment was one of the major tasks performed by the contractors. This article presents three case studies in which contract workers performed a number of tasks with no reportable incidents but did so unsafely. It also highlights the training received by most contractors, the constraints imposed upon them and the safety hazards to which they are exposed most frequently.

The analysis of a machine-luminaire configuration is a time- consuming process requiring the construction of a machine mockup, installation of a designated lighting arrangement, and an extensive set of illumination measurements. This entire process, however, is well suited to computer analysis. By simulating the machine geometry and the characteristics of the desired luminaires, the incident light levels can be calculated at the required set of points. This Bureau of Mines paper presents a general description of the techniques involved in performing this simulation.

Understanding the impulse transferred into a structure by the coupled two-phase loading produced by an explosive charge buried in soil is of interest for various applications. The most common impulse measurement technique involves a buried explosive charge and a steel plate/test structure suspended above the charge. Upon detonation of the charge, the soil and overpressure heave the plate into the air. The plate’s trajectory and velocity provide the necessary information to calculate the total impulse transferred from the charge configuration.

This paper provides an account of the efforts undertaken to construct the Northeast Interceptor Sewer (NEIS) project, which is a portion of a much larger program in Los Angeles, California to upgrade the city’s wastewater facilities. The project consisted of a number of elements, including both soft ground and rock slurry wall shafts, drilled shafts, soft ground EPBM mining, rock TBM mining, large diameter pipe placement, and underground structure construction. The need to complete the project under strict schedule constraints, in addition to the challenges of underground construction in congested urban areas, necessitated the work be undertaken with the proper balance of state of the art equipment, and thoughtful planning. The paper will detail the means, methods, and equipment used on the project, as well as discuss several of the unforeseen conditions encountered during construction.

"Murrin Murrin Operations has not had a successful beginning. Numerous reliability and operability issues many of which are the result of design decisions have been addressed through mechanical and operational changes and the CCD circuit is no exception. Four design aspects of the CCD circuit that have caused and continue to cause operational problems are:1. the inclusion of solution neutralisation gypsum in the CCD circuit feed which was designed solely for HPAL residue without proper investigation of its impact on the achievable underflow density and resulting wash efficiency;2. the decision to construct the thickener base from thickened solids;3. the lack of redundancy in the overflow, underflow and tailings pipe work; and4. the lack of thickener operational flexibility in the central rake-lift and feedwell dilution system.In November 2002, the lack of operational flexibility in the rake-lift and the feedwell dilution system through mechanical modification as follows:•, CCD1 has a modified rake mechanism that now allows central vertical lift of 600 mm;•, CCD1 has forced dilution using the Outokumpu Turbodil® technology and replacing the E-Duc® technology of Eimco;The decision to install, the installation and the results of the CCD1 rake-lift mechanism and feedwell dilution system are discussed in this paper. The installation was justified on improved operational robustness and an increase in the in the underflow density of 1 per cent (per cent w/w). At approximately the same time process modifications in the solution neutralisation circuit were implemented and these changes altered the rheology of the slurry reporting to CCD1. Since the modifications to CCD1 and the solution neutralisation circuit, the CCD circuit has averaged a 2 per cent improvement in the circuit underflow density.The CCD1 modification was completed on time and mechanically has performed well. From a risk point of view, the central rake-lift and Turbodil®dilution system add a degree of freedom and robustness to CCD1 operation that has extended the range of operational confidence. In this respect, the modification has been a success and is complementary solution neutralisation improvements."

The relationship between support performance parameters and parameters representative of mining and roof conditions is characterised by uncertainty, non-linearity and dependence, so the theory of artificial neural networks was selected as a basis for shield design. A computer program based on a back-propagation training algorithm was written to derive the weighting factors between inputs and outputs from field data; once these had been established two mathematical models were developed to describe the relationship. Back-calculation of field data indicates that the results generated from the neural network models are much more accurate than those derived by traditional methods and can be used with a higher level of confidence. The support density, possible yield frequency of face supports and interval of periodic roof weighting under specific mining and roof conditions can be determined by application of the models
