This report details a microcomputer-based control and monitoring network that was developed in-house by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and installed on a continuous mining machine. The network consists of microcomputers that are connected together via a single twisted-pair cable. Each microcomputer was developed to provide a particular function in the control process. Machine-mounted microcomputers, in conjunction with the appropriate sensors, provide closed-loop control of the machine, navigation, and environmental monitoring. Off-the-machine microcomputers provide remote control of the machine, sensor status, and a connection to the network so that external computers can access network data and control the continuous mining machine. Because of the network's generic structure, it can be installed on most mining machines.

Silicon is the second most abundant element on earth, exceeded only by oxygen. Silicon dioxide forms a crystalline structure of repeating SiO2 molecules which form characteristically hard, durable crystals. As a result, crystalline silica is Ubiquitous in the crustal rocks, sediments and the mineral products derived from mining. An examination of the history of studies that identify silica as a human and animal carcinogen is presented in the context of the development of a public health policy in California. The implications for the cost of conducting aggregate and other mining operations in the state are discussed.

"IntroductionTHE SMALLER industrial and commercial steam generating plants in the United States are suffering from an ‘engineering deficiency' which, if allowed to continue, will probably result in the extinction of the species• that now burn •approximately 75 million tons of coal. We will classify as 'small' those plants which should require not more than one operating man per shift, including those in which as little .as thirty minutes per day should be adequate for .all service attention. These are the small steam plants that need the most, and get the least, expert attention for fuel :planning, equipment selection, design layout, .and proper operating technique. Dissatisfaction with bituminous coal is usually caused by one or more preventable weaknesses such as excessive or burdensome labour •for firing, .coal or ash handling and manual operation, smoke and fly ash emission above nuisance levels:, high maintenance and premium coal application for acceptable operation, and .finally, overall steam costs which are not .competitive. These 'deficiencies', so .common in the small coal-fired steam plants, can be readily eliminated by competent engineering and modern equipment with automatic controls."

THIS is in part a review paper, indicating the various steps that have been taken in developing hindered-settling apparatus, some of the standard data that have been obtained, and some of the conclusions one is led to as to the effect of it in improving concentrating-methods and machinery, and in part it brings in some unpublished work. CAUSES OF LOSS IN ORE-CONCENTRATION. In making a study of the separation of valuable minerals from the waste gangue, particularly by water concentrators, it is necessary to define, first of all, what are the causes of-loss that are likely to interfere with the concentration. Having made this definition; we can then study to see in what way the machines make their losses, and plan remedies for them in an intelligent way. Losses may be stated to occur as included grains, as flat or long grains, as fine free mineral, and as absolute slime. We will take, these up one by one, as follows: Included Grains.-Fig. 1 shows by a set of diagrams how included grains may occur: first, where the heavy mineral grains attached to the quartz are of large size; secondly, where they are of small size ; and thirdly, where very fine particles of heavy mineral are included in the quartz. We have to decide in regard to included grains whether they are rich enough to go direct to, the furnace, or poor enough to throw away, or whether they lie between these two points and require recrushing as the only means of severing the values from the waste. This last case is the only one requiring special treatment at our hands. We will therefore consider that next. * By mutual consent, this paper has been presented also before the Colorado Scientific Society, and the Canadian Mining Institute, Montreal.

The paper considers the geology and the coalfields that comprise the Scottish south area. It traces the history of known sources of spontaneous combustion and indicates the collieries concerned, with the position of the seams in the geological series where heatings have occurred. The methods of work over the years are described. It relates in detail the circumstances surrounding a fire at Bilston Glen Colliery in the Lothian Coalfield, and the heating at Killoch Colliery in the Ayrshire Coalfield, and the steps taken to deal with them. It also describes some of the difficulties in steep seam working. Methods adopted to prevent spontaneous combustion throughout the area are discussed, and some detail of the UNOR gas analyser is given. Finally, it comments on the present techniques in use in the area, particularly at Bilston Glen Colliery, to prevent spontaneous combustion.

"A high altitude review of the state of the mining industry provided by a study of multifactor productivity shows a continuation of lower output year on year for the capital and labor inputs applied. The story is sadly similar for both U.S. mining and the Australian mining sector. In fact, according to PwC analysts, the world’s mining equipment productivity has declined 20 percent during the past seven years (Lumley, 2014). Although the reasons for the continuing decline in mining productivity are varied, the need for improvement is clear.The world’s mining industry fleet of more than 400 large draglines moves billions of tons of overburden and ore (phosphate, limestone, etc.) annually. This discussion will review a few of the tools available for improved productivity in dragline operations.Benchmarking equipment performance exposes the possibilitiesIn the September 2013 Mining Engineering cover story Graham Lumley and R. Adsero suggested that analyzing best practice equipment performance from an industrywide database for specific equipment performance improvement goals would be beneficial (Adsero, 2013). Benchmarking equipment performance by normalizing differences and then comparing specific measures of performance will provide a road map to improvement for those following the leaders. For those already performing at best practice levels, a benchmark confirms and bolsters what has already been achieved. As described in the SME February 2014 paper by this author, best practice is the average of the top 10 percent in annual output. Filling performance gaps identified by a comparison to best practice by investigating the details of the why and taking action to change, makes all the difference. This is true for all major mining equipment. Given the large gap between average performance and best practice performance most mining operations can benefit. Best practice performance provides a view of what is possible to the 90 percent majority of mining operations that are performing below the top 10 percent.For dragline mining operations, identifying specific characteristics and practices of leading dragline performance will provide a reference for comparison."

"INTRODUCTION This paper addresses the prevalence of poor public reporting practices of Coal Exploration Results, Coal Resources and Coal Reserves in southern Africa. Currently, the reporting of coal tonnage without supporting coal qualities or “saleable” tonnes and quality is a poor reporting practice that occurs far too often. Not all coal is equal – therefore it is extremely important that investors or potential investors are provided with the full details of both run-of-mine (“ROM”) and Saleable coal tonnage, their associated qualities and other material and relevant information. Competent or Qualified Persons should note that publicly reported information should be sufficient to enable an informed reader to make a reasonable and balanced assessment of the significance of the information provide. “Companies are encouraged to provide information in their Public Reports, which is as comprehensive as possible” (CRIRSCO, 2013): too often this isn’t the case and material matters are either not reported or inadequately disclosed. According to the South African National Standard (SANS) 10320:2014 draft document - “tonnage and coal quality that will be available for sale, either in the raw ROM state (raw Saleable) at a specified moisture content, or after beneficiation of the ROM coal by processing operations to produce materials at specified qualities, size ranges and moisture contents. The assessments must demonstrate that at the time of reporting, the marketing of the products is reasonably justified. The basis of the predicted practical product yield to achieve the Saleable Coal Reserve must be stated. The moisture basis of reporting shall be stated.” As an example to why coal qualities are so important to the public, the requirements of South Africa’s electric public utility (Eskom) power stations are highlighted. The Kendal power station, commissioned in 1988, operates at a Calorific Value (“CV”) range of 19 to 20MJ/kg, an Ash content between 29 and 34% and Volatiles between 20 to 21%. Other power stations, such as Kriel or Hendrina, may require different qualities such as a CV range of 22 to 23MJ/kg, an Ash content between 20 and 28% and Volatiles between 22 to 23%. Thus, in terms of domestic saleable coal, it isn’t just about reporting the coal qualities but also informing the investor as to which power station the coal is intended to be sold as “boilers are designed to burn particular qualities of coal” and “it is not always possible to transfer coal between stations because of different quality requirements at each station” (Chetty, 2010). Sulphur content is also another important quality with the ideal coal content having a quality of less than 1% Sulphur."

Welcome to DFI45! our first on-line annual meeting. We cannot deny the severe impacts that the COVID19 pandemic is having in our industry and our lives. We extend our support to all of our members that have been impacted in many different ways. But through the middle of this difficult and challenging times, our beloved annual conference emerges, trying to re-unite our industry and remind us why we love what we do so much. DFI45 was not originally planned to be delivered virtually, but as our world changed, we adapted. Adversity became an opportunity to re-invent our annual conference. Thanks to the vision of our Organizing Committee, we saw the amazing new possibilities and DFI45 is today a reality. Our theme for this year is People + Purpose + Passion. This theme was decided before the COVID 19 pandemic started, but today it is more relevant than ever before. We are a group of very diverse people at DFI. Our organization includes Contractors, Consultants, Suppliers, and Academics just to name a few sub-groups. But we all have a common purpose and try to find common ground. We are all extremely passionate about what we do, and this excitement is really what makes this organization what it is today. This conference celebrates this passion as you can see in our three main Keynote Sessions. On a local scale, we want to go back and remember the contribution of our industry to our beloved National Monuments in Washington D.C. On a national scale, we want to explore and recap the development of Government Guidelines and Specifications that became the world standards. And finally, we want to close the conference with a session celebrating the family legacy and share amazing stories of families with multiple generations working in our industry. Besides our Keynote Lectures, the conference is full of exciting content such as several case histories, experimental research in deep foundations, applications of new technologies, business aspects and risk management considerations for deep foundations, just to list a few. We also have our now traditional events such as the Hal Hunt Lecture, Awards Reception, DFI Educational Trust 5K Fundraiser, etc. For the first time, all this content will be delivered using different virtual formats, including on-demand presentations, plenary sessions, interactive chat rooms, etc. We are excited about these possibilities. To conclude, we need to recognize the people that against all odds made this conference a reality. First our sponsors, they adapted to the most abrupt change never thought before, and they always stayed there with us, providing unconditional support. Without them no conference is possible. Next, our Organizing Committee that re-invented the concept of an annual conference and found new and exciting ways to make this happen! Our Technical Program Committee led by our Technical Program Chairs, Jennifer Nicks and Gregg Piazza, showed us that nothing is impossible. And last, but not least, the amazing DFI staff that make dreams reality. It has been an honor to serve as the Conference Chair for DFI45. "Molybdenum is a very important rare mineral resources, which exists largely in oxidized ores and sulphide ores in nature. About 99% of metallic molybdenum comes from molybdenite. The talcose molybdenum resources are abundant but the resources utilization is low, because the talc is naturally hydrophobic and the floatability of talc is similar with molybdenite, which lead to difficult separation by flotation. Talc is easy entry into concentrate in flotation which can cause the content of MgO overhigh, therefore the molybdenum concentrate grade can not meet the industrial requirements. Thus the utilization level of talcose molybdenum resources has been restricted greatly.The adsorption of water on talc and molybdenite surfaces and natural floatability of minerals were studied by density functional theory method. The results showed that molybdenite and talc were layered minerals which exhibited similar surface wettability and H2O molecule prefers to stay with water rather than the minerals surfaces. N2 is adsorbed on talc and molybdenite surfaces more easily than H2O. The interaction and flotation behavior were studied by SEM and flotation experiments. The reason why talc interferes with the flotation molybdenite has been revealed. The agglomeration between molybenite and talc was caused easily in neutral or acidity solution, and it was dispersing between molybenite and talc particles in alkaline solution. The flotation results showed that good floatability of talc was the key factor causing a low grade of concentrate in alkaline solution. Thus, it is the key factor to enlarge floatability difference between molybdenite and talc.INTRODUCTIONMolybdenum is a kind of important rare metal and strategic reserve resources (Zhitao Y et al, 2016a). Due to excellent characteristic, such as high melting point, good thermal property and et al, it’s widely used in metallurgy, machinery, chemical, aerospace, and many other areas. It has become an indispensable metal in modern industry. Molybdenum generally exist in the form of molybdenite which is a kind of mineral with excellent natural floatability. Talc is a kind of typical hydrous and layered magnesium silicate minerals (Beattie D et al,2006a), which is one of the most common gangue mineral of the platinum group metal ores and metal sulfide ores (Tao L et al,2011). Due to its good native floatability, talc is easy entry into the concentrate product with foam in the process of sulfide ore flotation (Kelebek S and Smith S, 2006b), which resulted in decreasing concentrate indexes. Not on that, the high-content MgO of concentrate will also produce a series of adverse impact to the subsequent smelting (Lotter N O et al, 2008). Therefore, it is difficult to separate talc from sulfide ore concentrate effectively."

"Gold is one of the most valuable and precious metals. But, the extraction efficiency of gold from natural resources is very low and labor-intensive due to very low concentration of gold, i.e.,1–5 ppm, which means that gold extraction processes produce extensive amounts of tailings. The gold content in printed circuit boards (PCB) from waste mobile phones is about 100 to 400 ppm, which is enormously greater than the concentration found in natural ores. Consequently, processes for recycling waste PCB and gold mine tailings become of increasing importance to maintain a sustainable society. As processing these waste materials by pyrometallurgical methods has become more economically attractive, understanding the thermodynamic behavior of gold in smelting slags under oxidizing and reducing conditions has become increasingly important. Therefore, in this study, the effects of slag chemistry, oxygen potential and temperature on gold solubility in smelting slags are discussed. From the results presented, the predominant species of gold is strongly dependent on the basicity of slag. Furthermore, more basic slags showed higher solubility of gold at a given oxygen partial pressure, and more oxidizing atmospheres enhanced the dissolution of gold to the molten slag phase. As a consequence, careful control of the slag composition during pyro-processing of gold-containing waste materials is required to maximize gold recovery. INTRODUCTIONGold has good physicochemical properties. Thus, it plays an increasingly important role in industrial applications. For example, over 300 tons of gold are used annually in electronic components (Hageluken &Corti, 2010).However, 75% of all gold ever produced has been extracted since 1910 and gold reserves in the world are becoming rapidly depleted (Louis & Pluchery, 2012).The cost of gold production and its price in the market have increased rapidly during last 20 years as shown in Figure 1, and interest in the recycling of gold-containing materials has naturally increased.The wastes from electronic equipment (e-wastes) contain large amounts of precious metals compared to their own respective ores, and therefore such wastes may be considered as a secondary source of valuable metals. For instance, the concentration of gold in natural ore is commonly 0.5–15 g/ton-ore (0.5–15 ppm), while its concentration in electronic circuit boards is over 10 times higher, typically being about 150 ppm in expansion cards and over 10,000 ppm in central processing units(Barbieri et al., 2010).Also, gold mine tailings are discharged after the flotation process as slurry form then stored near the operating plants (approx. 100 ton per day in one Korean gold mine). Gold mine tailings contain gold at about 1–2 g/ton. This is the reason why Au-containing materials such as e-wastes and mining wastes are highly important sources of gold (Yamasue et al., 2009)."

"Comparison of experimental data obtained in a benchmark experiment of solidification of a Sn-3%wt.Pb ingot and numerical results of two-dimensional and three-dimensional simulations of the process is presented. The benchmark experiment consisted in solidifying a rectangular ingot of Sn-3%wt.Pb alloy using two heat exchangers. Conditions of solidification were thoroughly controlled due to six thermocouples embedded into each heat exchanger. Due to another array of thermocouples the evolution of the temperature field at a lateral wall of the crucible was registered during the whole experiment. A treatment of the temperature data provided an estimation of the velocity field in the experiment. Post-mortem analyses of the sample provided the pattern of macrostructure of the sample and qualitative segregations pattern. 2D and 3D numerical solidification models are developed to give the distribution of the solute in a solidified sample.IntroductionConvection, either natural or forced, plays a very important role during the solidification. Its intensity and flow pattern affect heat and mass transfer and, consequently, macrostructure and segregation in a solidified ingot [1-4]. The effect of buoyancy convection during solidification has been studied in many laboratory-scale experiments [5-6]. Due to these experiments a general comprehension of formation of various defects in the ingot has been achieved. However, mentioned studies were not consistent since alloys, solidification conditions and configurations were every time chosen arbitrary. That is why the role of each parameter characterizing solidification process remains unclear. Moreover, the question of reproducibility of defects under the same solidification conditions still exists. In addition, most of the experiments suffer from the insufficient knowledge of control parameters that makes difficult their use for validation of models for solidification. These parameters serve as boundary conditions for numerical modeling and their incomplete description leads unavoidably to the errors in simulations. This situation motivated us to develop a setup for benchmark solidification experiments and to perform a set of the solidification experiments which we reported in [7]. Here we presented a comparison between results obtained in a benchmark experiment of solidification of Sn-3%wtPb ingot and its numerical modeling, which was performed in two-dimensional and three-dimensional configurations."

Washington State has a well developed set of blasting regulations which have been promulgated by the Department of Labor using extensive stakeholder input, not only from citizens but also from manufacturers and representatives of IME, blasters in charge, blasting engineers, blasting companies, local and federal law enforcement agencies, fire officials, and local and state government representatives. WAC 296-52 therefore provides a foundation or platform for developing city ordinances for Washington State cities should a City wish to do so. On the other hand, Oregon’s code is based on OSHA 1926, Subdivision U, Blasting and the Use of Explosives which provides scant direction regarding the modern use of explosives. Reference is also made to ODOT Section 00335 - Blasting Methods and Protection of Excavation Backslopes. This paper examines two separate programs that have been developed by two Cities, one in Washington State and one in Oregon to further regulate blasting inside City limits and discusses why the lack of a regulatory foundation made one approach more difficult than the other. One of the authors was retained by the City of Kennewick, WA to develop their ordinance and has more recently followed and reacted to a pending ordinance for the City of Redmond, Oregon. The paper will compare and contrast the different approaches and comment on the reaction from both Blasters and the public. We also present a case study that involved blasting in an urban area of Oregon to prepare a foundation for a water tank. Controlled Blasting was carried out within 70-ft of residencies and within a community that had expressed reservations regarding blasting even though the work would make a significant contribution to the betterment of the community. Pre-construction surveys of residencies located in a large area surrounding the site were performed and a well-planned blasting program was carried out. Residencies were subject to vibration levels that were monitored using six seismographs that surrounded the site and these units measured vibration levels that were significantly lower than allowed by statute. There were complaints triggered by individuals reactions to blast vibrations which validated commonly held models of human perception but no damage was caused by the Blasting.

"During my first contact with industrial metallurgy as a summer vacation worker at the Steelplant at Luleå, Sweden, I came during a visit to MEFOS into contact with works of Prof. Worner caried out during the piloting of the Worcra continuous steelmaking process. These tests are still today remarkable as an innovative step in the art of metalmaking. By that they involved the necessary ingredients for the development of our art: seeing, knowing and doing. Industrial injection as applied during slag fuming will be discussed below.Phenomena of injection metallurgyPhenomenon according to Collins dictionary is"" anything that can be perceived as an occurrence or facts by the senses"". To open the senses for the interesting phenomena in pyrometallurgy must be the main task of any educator. The investigations by Engh et al. around the mixing phenomena of the WORCRA process are an early example of combining senses with knowledge. To see what you model must be a crucial part in any development. This can also involve to see and control that one is subject to the same conditions as in published models. Below the need ""to see"" will be illustrated by some recent investigations around slag fuming. In the literature various models for reactions occuring during the fuming of slags are presented. Numerous worthwhile benefits accrue to the industrial organization that is supported by a maintenance organization performing at a world class level. That organization will be favored with consistently reliable production equipment. It will be assured of meeting production goals. Its product will exceed marketplace standards. Its customers will see them as a quality organization. Its employees will enjoy job satisfaction and the plant will realize continuing profitability. Every industrial plant aspires to achieve ?world class? status knowing it can compete favorably with the best, most profitable organizations in the world. The trick is to achieve the attributes that qualify your organization for world class status. But there are no world class maintenance organizations. Rather, there are world class industrial organizations that include a world class maintenance organization. Maintenance, by itself, is a service provider, dependent on the support and cooperation of other departments. When that service is exceptional, it is made that way because maintenance is operating in a plant environment that requires it to be exceptional. Managers have created an environment in which maintenance can be exceptional. The plant, mine or facility manager must acknowledge from the start that maintenance is not a stand-alone effort of a plant maintenance department. It will require the joint efforts of all plant departments. Quality material support and full cooperation from operations, for example, are among the essential requisites for effective maintenance and achievement of world class maintenance status. When attributes such as these are reinforced by dedicated plant managers, profitability soon follows.

You might have been one of the families that decided that an agriculturally based existence was no longer for you, and that the promise of a factory job was more appealing and more secure. And it was. Financially at least. Not so much from a workplace safety perspective.

INTRODUCTION The toughest job for any mining company, large or small, is to locate and identify a property which it feels has the potential for development and which can be tied up through location, lease or option under terms within their means. In the case of a small company, this precludes grass-roots exploration with its attendant high costs and the extended time required to develop a prospect to the point of being a project. The small mining company, therefore must limit its search to known properties which, for various reasons, have been shut down or were never thoroughly developed at the time of discovery. These types of prospects are located either through literature search, familiarity with many mining areas in general, or through contacts and submittals from a variety of sources. In order to develop a marketable presentation to any investor, the basic requirements are the same: - the property must demonstrate the potential to provide a satisfactory return on investment - the evaluation study must be thorough and professionally developed. In order to promote any mining property, it is first necessary to know what you have. INFORMATION DEVELOPMENT We normally begin with a detailed literature search of the district, assembling all available data on the basic geology, production records, and old reports of this or neighboring properties and any other information which can be found. This will aid in the general understanding of the basic geology and hopefully allow a fairly detailed knowledge of the specific occurrence. With this information one can begin to speculate on the reserve potential and develop some high and low figures for estimating purposes as to mining method, production rate, metallurgy and begin developing estimated capital and operating costs. Cashflow runs are developed for varying tonnages (high and low), estimated high and low grades of metal and at differing market prices for the product. FINANCE CONTACTS Brooks Minerals, from its inception, has been an operating company and we have been able to assemble a small but experienced operating staff. For this reason we try to put together projects and joint ventures where we can be the operator and maintain a certain degree of control. Whether due to familiarity with many colleagues in the mining industry or due to unfamiliarity with the banking houses and securities markets, the approach to raising finance has generally been to contact the established mining companies. This requires a familiarity with the corporate philosophies of these companies with respect to their development goals and financial capabilities. A common mistake is to shotgun the proposal to many companies of different sizes and goals in hopes that one might be interested. It is more beneficial, when possible, to tailor a proposal to each company, stressing the positive points where the specific proposal best meets their interests. One company may be more interested in a development program with fairly certain and conservative return potential.
