Western mining companies are entering an African critical minerals market where access is harder to secure, risk is being priced more sharply, and execution advantages are increasingly decisive. The continent holds significant reserves and production potential of cobalt, lithium, copper, graphite, manganese and rare earths critical to the energy transition, yet Chinese-aligned capital has built a structural edge in access and execution speed. Simply signing narrow offtake agreements to buy output is no longer sufficient. Western firms win when they convert quality orebodies into bankable projects by reducing aboveground risk faster than competitors through integrated infrastructure access, durable fiscal alignment, and credible local value creation. Western mining companies will break into Africa by pairing capital with partnership, building corridors enabling infrastructure and power, designing credible value addition pathways and operating in a way that is politically durable through transparency, community benefit and fiscal terms that share upside in commodity upcycles. This feature article offers a practical playbook for mining executives and investors. The core argument is straightforward. Winning in Africa requires competing on the full system around the mine. Corridors and power, processing pathways, contract durability, community benefit and regulatory execution are now decisive variables in project valuation and capital access.

With the introduction of Cast Blasting techniques, field controls of Drilling & Blasting operations became more important. New drills were purchased which were equipped with sophisticated instrumentation and more accurate drilling plans were required. Concurrently a decision had to be made on the replacement of borehole logging equipment owned by the mine. The use of a contractor to log blast boreholes was eventually decided upon, the information gained from this operation is used in the short-term drill and blast planning and may also be used to assist in the coaling operation if density I quality correlations prove acceptable.

The effect of fragmentation size distribution as it relates to front end loader productivity was evaluated by comparing loader cycle times to fragmentation size of the shot rock. At Gold Mine in Southern Utah, a gold deposit containing both limestone and sandstone formations were blasted in the same shot.

In cooperation with the Division of Advanced Automotive Power Systems Development, Environmental Protection Agency, the Bureau of Mines studied a conventional spark-ignition engine as a prime mover for use in a hybrid system. The study involved both steady-state and transient engine operation with ignition timing, air-fuel ratio, exhaust gas recirculation, oxidizing type catalytic converters, engine speed, and power output as variables. Data were obtained from two 1971 model 350-cubic-inch-displacement engines mounted on engine dynamometer stands. When the hybrid engine was operated with an oxidizing catalyst at power output levels required for a 4,000-lb curb weight hybrid vehicle, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions could be reduced to approximately 2.0 grams and 0.3 gram per brake horsepower-hour, respectively. With exhaust gas recirculation, oxides of nitrogen emission levels could be reduced to approximately 1.2 grams per brake horsepower-hour.

"Quantitative analysis of mine-wide subsidence at the kilometer scale and details of stress distribution about an advancing longwall face are estimated using an adaptation of the finite element method. The method is well suited to the tasks at hand. For greater realism, variability of strata properties is taken into account as are the effects of joints and cleats on elastic moduli and strengths. Evolution of pillar stress and entry closure remote from the face is readily quantified in a series of analyses that simulate face advance. Computed results compare favorably with the evolution of closure measurements about an instrumented pillar in a two-entry headgate. The appropriateness of the finite element method is confirmed. This method is based on first principles that avoid empirical schemes of uncertain applicability and numerical models “calibrated” by fitting computer output to mine measurements.INTRODUCTIONMine-induced seismicity is intimately related to strata mechanics associated with longwall coal mining and room and pillar mining, as well. Strata deformed beyond an elastic limit often tend to fail rapidly by brittle fracture and, thus, to emit acoustic signals in the form of elastic waves. Understanding the induced seismicity in coal mining offers the potential for early warning of hazardous conditions. Many years of experience with seismic phenomena associated with hardrock mining suggest considerable complexity should be expected. However, recent coal mine studies (Pariseau, 2014; Pariseau, 2015; Pariseau and McCarter, 2015; Pariseau and McCarter, 2016) have shown high correlations of seismicity with element failures in finite element simulations. The main lesson learned from these studies is one elaborated by Iannacchione et al (2005); deviation from normal activity is an early warning of ground control difficulty. For example, an abrupt increase in seismic event rate, or equivalently, an increase in element failure in finite element simulation of panel advance, is a cautionary indication for ground control. Present and past study results demonstrate the effectiveness of finite element simulations for mine design and early detection of potential ground control issues."

Maximizing mining recovery rates and minimizing ore loss are pivotal objectives for economic efficiency and operational effectiveness. This study explores methods to address these imperatives by enhancing ore production and recovery through improved blasting techniques and spillage control in the Martabe Gold Mine Project in North Sumatra Province, Indonesia. Between 2018 and 2021, the average mining recovery rate stood at 93%, resulting in a potential annual ore loss of 7% and a potential quarterly financial impact of close to $2 million. Maintaining and enhancing mining recovery became crucial, with a planned 30% increase in total material movement for 2022. The mining recovery target for 2022 was set at 96% based on best achievement historical data from 2021 to increase ore tonnage by 203 KTon per annum. To achieve the primary objective of increasing ore production by improving mining recovery, the study focused on predicting and controlling the movement of blasted ore to reduce spillage and enhancing the grade control model to reflect actual conditions post-blasting. Several alternative solutions were explored, primarily emphasizing drilling and blasting activities. Essential methods included capturing the actual blasting movement to adjust the ore block based on blasting design data and post-blasting muckpile topography. This approach minimizes ore loss by providing output as ore block adjustment based on post-blast movement data. In addition, the tie-up design was adjusted to control ore spillage outside the pit ridge. The implementation of these methods yielded significant improvements. Adjusting the ore block based on actual blasting movement contributed $1,545,764 in benefits. Controlling ore spillage outside the pit ridge achieved a 10% reduction in spillage, contributing $79,184 in benefits. These enhancements successfully met the 2022 mining recovery target of 96%, marking a 3% increase from 2021. Consequently, ore loss was reduced by 178 KTon throughout 2022, resulting in a financial impact of $7.3 million. The study underscores the significance of precise blasting techniques and effective spillage control in enhancing mining recovery rates.

The mining industry has undergone a profound and transformative shift in recent years, driven by the rapid advancement of emerging technologies such as automation, digitalisation, and electrification. These technological innovations have not only revolutionised operational efficiency and productivity but have also introduced an imperative need for new and innovative approaches to conducting mining activities. Specifically, the mines of the future face a new series of complex challenges when planning and developing greenfield or brownfield mining projects in the 21st century. These challenges include greater operational depths, higher seismicity levels, higher rock temperatures, increased environmental constraints and sustainability requirements, a higher degree of interoperability, lack of skilled workforce, and the need for sustainable and eco-friendly mining practices. Consequently, there is an essential need to formulate novel strategies and robust planning methodologies that re-evaluate how mines are planned, executed, and managed, from the early exploration stages to the post-mining era and the consequent uses of mine sites. This research focuses on identifying the factors influencing the implementation of modern technologies, such as autonomous machinery in mining operations, and their impact on mining method selection and longterm mine planning. The findings underscore a crucial need for a paradigm shift in how mines are planned and developed, going beyond mining method selection, which primarily focuses on geological and economic factors, and must evolve to incorporate the multifaceted implications of modern mining operations.

Mineral flotation is effective over a relatively narrow particle size range of approximately 10 to 100 µm. If the upper particle size limit can be increased, however, a run-of-mine ore may be coarse ground, and only the middlings are ground further to achieve required grades. This will result in significant energy savings and increased throughput. In this communication, methods of increasing the upper particle size limit will be discussed on the basis of a flotation model that can predict flotation from both hydrodynamic and surface chemical parameters. An example of increasing flotation recovery by control of a chemistry parameter is given.

Winzes are usually sunk 9 ft. 6 in. long by 6 ft. 0 in. wide and are divided into two compartments, 4 ft. 0 in. by 5 ft. 0 in. inside the timbers. The general practice is to sink the winze to a depth of from 9 to 12 ft., put in bearers and three or four rings of timber, and then erect a sinking headframe before continuing sinking operations.GENERALThe main feature governing the design of the headframe was that all parts could be transported on timber trolleys in No. 2 Shaft. Except for some minor details the structural members consist of steam pipe. Joints are sections of steam pipe welded to one member and into which the other member fits and is held in place by a 1-in. bolt. The headframe consists essentially of two bedpieces to carry the winch and to form a seat for the four legs. The legs support the sheave bearers, the tipping door and the brace.Except during tipping operations the door is in a nearly vertical position. For tipping it is lowered to an inclined position and a hook suspended from one of the bracing members of the headframe is attached to a "D" welded to the bottom of the kibble. This causes the kibble to tip when it is lowered on to the tipping door. The capacity of the kibble is 4 cubic feet.THE HEADFRAMEThe dimensions of the headframe are:Height to top of sheave .. .. 14 ft. 10 in.Distance centre to centre of legs 4 ft. 4 in.Length of bedpieces .. .. .. .. 8 ft. 9 in.The weight is approximately 2,000 lb., the tipping door and bedpieces being the heaviest members. They weigh 240 lb. and 170 lb. respectively.One compartment of the winze is decked over, and the bedpieces, which are 8 ft. 9 in. lengths of 6 in. pipe with three short lengths of plate welded to the underside, are placed over the sinking compartment, either transversely or parallel to the winze. Three 3 inch pipes act as spreaders between them.Welded to the top of each bedpiece is a 6-in. by iHn. plate 3 ft. 0 in. long with four 4-in. by 1.5-in. slots cut longitudinally at 10 in. centres. Mine planners must select a single pit for design with the knowledge that the grades on which this selection is made are uncertain. This uncertainty is often ignored through the use of deterministic models of grade. This makes the mine planner?s job simpler but does not necessarily lead to the ?correct? or ?best? selection. Grade uncertainty is typically modelled with conditional simulation which generates multiple possible realisations of grade that are equally probable (or improbable) to occur. Methods for incorporating grade uncertainty into mine planning to date have either been perceived as being too complicated, not accessible or too time consuming. This paper proposes a simple and efficient modelling approach to incorporating conditional simulation into pit optimisation, which would be able to be applied in currently commercially software. An example for Resolute Mining Ltd?s Syama Gold Project in Mali shows the range of ore, grade and value outcomes associated with generating pits through a variety of methods.

Surface properties of minerals could be modified selectively and very specifically by adsorption -desorption (dissolution) processes. This requires a monitoring and control of the outermost surface layer at a molecular and atomic level. The nature and structure of self-assembled submonolayers and monolayers at the interface of minerals were studied by infrared reflection spectroscopy. The external reflection spectra of the adsorbed monolayers on any type of minerals: transparent, opaque or non-transparent, recorded at different angles of incidence and for two polarizations are an excellent source of information about the nature and surface distribution of the adsorbed species. The developed method allows to obtain detailed information at a molecular level about the adsorbed surface species. By combination of the simulated and experimental data, the qualitative description of the adsorbed species as well as quantitative evaluation of orientation and the thickness of the adsorption layers were obtained. This fundamental knowledge allows to determine the mechanisms of surface phenomena which govern selective separations. Examples of different surfactant - mineral systems and industrial applications will be discussed.

Acid rock drainage (ARD) is produced when sulfides are exposed to oxygen and water. Oxidation reactions typically result in a depression of pH and leaching of solutes and metals. Many oxidation models have been developed based on oxygen diffusion, but in environments with high permeability, other transport processes (i.e., convection and advection) can play an important role. Multiple sulfide mineral phases with differing oxidation rates should also be incorporated. WROC, a finite-difference model, was developed to account for these factors in predicting ARD. The program includes sulfide mineral oxidation using a shrinking core mechanism, heat transfer by conduction, heat of reaction, and oxygen transport by diffusion and advection. The model was validated using data from the literature. After validation, the WROC model was used to simulate several different waste rock scenarios including different forms of sulfide mineralization and the effect of implementing a waste rock cover. The results demonstrate that including specific sulfide mineral phases can have a significant effect on oxidation and that implementation of a cover can also aid in reducing waste rock oxidation. Radioisotope x-ray methods for the on-stream determination of copper, lead, and zinc in mineral product slurries were developed, and were successfully tested at the plant of Cobar Mines Pty. Ltd.The tests were made in three stages. Measurements to determine the precision of analysis were made initially on briquettes of the mineral products. The effect of slurry solids content variations was then determined by measurements on the mineral products in a recirculating slurry loop. The radioisotope analyser was finally tested in a series of on-stream measurements in the plant.Copper, lead, and zinc in flotation feed and in copper concentrate were determined to a precision ranging between 1·4 and 15 per cent of the mean element concentration in the slurry solids. These precisions are within limits required for plant control purposes at Cobar.
