"Over the past decade or so, our efforts have focused on developing the rationale and concepts for new technology in reagent development and optimization in the processing of base and precious metals. A major outcome of these efforts have been the development of a novel family of collectors, principally driven by the MAXGOLD® and Aero XD-5002® chemistries, for precious metals recovery from primary Au ores and Cu-Au ores. These chemistries was developed to be robust to address the complex mineralogy and gold deportment in these ores. Plant trial data for a variety of ores have confirmed that the both Aero® XD-5002 and MAXGOLD® chemistry are indeed versatile in recovering gold values occurring as gold alloys and/or associated with many types of sulfides, and in altering the deportment of certain sulfides (such as those bearing As, Bi etc). An overview will be given in this paper using plant data to highlight the application of these reagents.INTRODUCTIONThe subject matter of this paper is the flotation of Au containing minerals from their ores. The motivation from this manuscript comes from the several challenges faced with the processing of Au ores, as was articulated in detail by Nagaraj (2008). The biggest challenge is the complex mineralogy; most easy-to-treat free-milling ores bodies are largely depleted. The Au values are distributed in multiple host minerals such as pyrite, pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite and Cu minerals such as chalcopyrite. Au values also happen to be finely disseminated within the various minerals and are sometimes invisible in optical microscopy. Additionally, on any given day, some mines treat multiple ore types, and the mineralogy is different for each ore type.Xanthates continue to be the collectors of choice at most Au and PGM operations around the world. Most primary Au operations tend to consume very large amounts of collectors; the dosage ranges anywhere between 40-400 g/t and this has been attributed to both mineralogical and non-mineralogical factors (non-mineralogical factors include the low cost of xanthates and the mindset that “more is always better”, which is not necessarily the case). In addition, several studies now show that xanthates alone are never sufficient where multiple value minerals are present, and that supplementary collectors are required. The large doses present a substantial cost to the minerals industry, and many mining companies have expressed the need for more efficient reagents that can improve metallurgical performance at low dosages."

Following the Sago Mine accident, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) asked the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center to study several possible methane explosion scenarios in the Sago coal mine. The study used a 1-ft resolution map of the mine to produce a 3-dimensional (3-D) model of a portion of the mine, including the sealed area where the explosion occurred. An advanced 3-D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code was used to calculate the explosion pressures within the sealed area, on the mine seals, and in nearby regions of the mine. Based on the best available information on methane concentrations and assumptions on homogeneity and on layering and mix composition, three separate initial conditions of methane-air concentrations and location were studied. This paper discusses the CFD modeling technique, the results of the calculations, the challenges of conducting this type of modeling, and the advantages and limitations of CFD modeling of accident investigations of mine explosions.

Subsidence phenomenon as an unwanted consequence of underground mining can cause problems for environment and surface structures in mine area. Surface subsidence prediction for inclined and steep seams has been given less attention than horizontal seams due to the difficulties involved in the extraction of such coal-seams. This paper introduces a new profile function method for prediction of surface subsidence due to inclined coal-seam mining. The results of calculation with the new function indicate that the predicted value has good agreement with the measured data. The production and dispersion of metal nanoclusters onto inorganic supports and amorphous carbon rest on well consolidated technologies belonging to the realm of industrial catalysis and of basic catalysis research (1). In spite of the existence of a variety of specific synthetic strategies, their very rationale relies on three main approaches i. e.: A: precursors of both the metal nanoparticles and of the relevant supports (or the support itself) are intimately mixed (even let to react) at ambient conditions and then thermo-reduced according to very controlled protocols (2); B: precursors of metal nanoclusters are let to be adsorbed onto suitable supports from the gas or liquid phase and subsequently thermally decomposed (3); C: metastable size-controlled metal nanoclusters are previously generated in a liquid medium and subsequently transferred onto pre-formed support particles (4). The production and dispersion of metal nanoclusters onto organic soluble supports is also a rather well documented academic praxis (5, 6, 7, 8) able to provide e.g. size-controlled Au0 nanoclusters of 4.4±1.7 nm (5). Our group started in 1997 developing (9) an innovative approach to the synthesis of metal nanoclusters dispersed inside insoluble, albeit accessible (see below) mechanically robust gel-type resins (10), which procedure was tested so far on palladium metal. Metal ions are previously dispersed upon ion-exchange inside of the polymer framework, followed by chemical reduction and by the aggregation of born metal atoms into nanoclusters, the size of which is templated (11, 12) by the three-dimensional intercommunicating meshes that build up the overall polymer framework (Figure 1).

Upgrading of a Koolanooka magnetite iron ore sample provided by Kingstream Steel Ltd was investigated using low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS) and reverse flotation. The ore contained 38.6 per cent iron, 37.8 per cent silica, 6.5 per cent magnesia and 0.54 per cent alumina, with the main minerals in the ore being amphibole (42 per cent), magnetite (39 per cent) and quartz (14 per cent). The concentrate obtained after low intensity magnetic separation contained 66.6 per cent iron and 6.34 per cent silica with an iron recovery of 72 per cent. This concentrate was further treated by reverse flotation to increase the iron content and reduce the silica content to meet the requirements for direct reduction iron (DRI) feed grade.

"Displacement Cast-in-Place (DCIP) piles are not a common deep foundation type in the Washington, DC Metro Area market. As a result, less regional data is available for these foundations compared to other alternate deep foundation types. Displacement cast-in-place piles (DCIP) differ from traditional Auger Cast-In-Place (ACIP) piles in that the pile annulus is formed by pushing a partially-flighted, auger bit to depth via a large mandrel. The auger bit includes a displacing body near the bottom of the tooling. Therefore, little to no spoils are generated during installation and the soil around the annulus is largely densified in-place due to the displacing body being slightly larger than the mandrel it is attached to.Due to this densification, one would expect that the theoretical DCIP capacities (compression or tension) would be greater than an ACIP pile (assuming a pile of similar length and diameter). After 20 static load tests and the installation of over 6,000+ piles on the MGM National Harbor Casino Project, the differences in pile support characteristics between DCIP and ACIP piles of same size and depth was small. The performance of both pile types depended on the density and type of soil within the bearing stratum. In some early cases of DCIP use, the performance exceeded expectations and appeared to be more in line (or better) than typical capacities obtained from driven displacement piles. Other times, the tip elevations could not be achieved or were so difficult to achieve that installation delays occurred and/or significant additional engineering effort was required to address piles short of their requirement embedment.This paper will discuss the limitations of DCIP pile installation in dense Coastal Plain soils and will present the lessons learned during this project. The paper will also compare the DCIP pile type to both conventional ACIP and driven displacement piles utilizing regional and site-specific load test and installation data."

A monitoring method for diesel particulate matter was published as Method 5040 by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Organic and elemental carbon are determined by the method, but elemental carbon (EC) is a better exposure measure. The US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) proposed use of NIOSH 5040 for compliance determinations in metal and nonmetal mines. MSHA also published a rule making for coalmines, but no exposure standard was provided. A standard based on particulate carbon is not considered practical because of coal dust interference. Interference may not be a problem if an appropriate size-selective sampler and EC exposure standard are employed. Sub micrometer dust concentrations found in previous surveys of nondieselized, underground coal mines were relatively low. If a large fraction of the sub micrometer dust is organic and mineral matter, sub micrometer EC concentrations would be much lower than sub micrometer mass concentrations. Laboratory and ?eld results reported here in indicate the amount of EC contributed by sub micrometer coal dust is minor. In a laboratory test, a sub micrometer EC concentration of 31µg m 3 was found when sampling are spirable coal dust concentration over three times the US compliance limit (2mg m3). Laboratory results are consistent with surveys of nondieselized coal mines, where EC results ranged from below the method limit of detection to 18µg m 3 when size-selective samplers were used to collect dust fraction shaving particle diameters below 1.5µm sub micrometer EC concentrations were ?7µg m3. In dieselized mines, sub micrometer EC concentrations are much higher.

Development of the New York City Water Supply System The New York City water supply system serves a population of almost nine million, including residents in neighboring counties. Peak day demands on the system are currently running at about 70 m3/sec (about 1,600 mgd), which is significantly lower than in the 1990s. This trend of reducing demands over the past 25 years, which has been experienced in other major urban centers in the US, is mainly the result of conservation measures and increased cost consciousness on the part of water users. In the long term, demands are expected to once again follow an increasing trend with population growth, so that by the end of the planning horizon of these studies, the year2045, the peak day demand is expected to increase to about 85 m3/sec (2,000 mgd).The system is served largely by surface water sources, regulated by a system of 19reservoirs and three controlled lakes, which are connected to the City by a series of aqueducts, the longest of which is about 87 km (54 miles). The total storage in the sys-tem amounts to about 560 billion gallons, providing a system firm yield of about1300 mgd. The Delaware system provides about 50% of the City’s water, the Catskill about 40%, with the remaining 10% provided by the Croton. The system as a whole, which is shown on Figure 1, has been built up over the past 150 years, and is truly a marvel of engineering. The Catskill and Delaware aqueducts both discharge into Kensico Reservoir, which is a daily balancing reservoir located in Westchester County about 24 km(15 miles) north of the New York City line. The two aqueducts extend south for a further 14 miles to combine again at Hillview Reservoir in the Bronx, which provides hourly balancing storage for New York City system. The Croton aqueduct runs nearby as shown on Figure 2, but does not connect into the two reservoirs. From Hillview Reservoir the water is supplied to the city via three main distribution tunnels, known as City Tunnels 1, 2, and 3. City Tunnel No.1 was developed in the 1920s as part of the Catskill system. City Tunnel No. 2 followed in the 1960s as part of the Delaware system. City Tunnel No. 3 (CT3) is partly under construction and partly in operation, and is being implemented to permit the other distribution tunnels to be taken out of operation for the first time for inspection and maintenance. "Solvent extraction is used in many acid leach uranium circuits to upgrade and purify the uranium bearing solution prior to final product precipitation. A number of strip options are available to recover the uranium from the loaded organic. This paper compares some of these options on the basis of typical capital and operating costs for both the solvent extraction circuit and downstream uranium processing, and also considers other related issues. The aim is to provide an objective comparative assessment of these options that could be used as a qualitative guide in process selection or improvement.INTRODUCTIONIn the 1950s the uranium industry was the first industry to adopt solvent extraction (SX). Since then, the flow sheets have advanced. Notable was the introduction of tertiary amine extractants by General Mills during the late 1950s and 1960s (Mackenzie, 1997; Mackenzie, 2005), which is still today considered ‘state of the art’ technology. Initially solvent extraction was done in combination with ion-exchange, such as in the Eluex flow sheet, followed later by the adoption of direct solvent extraction from pregnant leach solution (PLS). From a strip-precipitation perspective ammonia strip followed by ammonium diuranate precipitation was widely adopted as the norm in the uranium industry. More recently alternative strip systems have been receiving increasing attention due to the environmental, health and safety issues associated with ammonia and the resulting calcined uranium oxide product. This paper explores some of these alternative options in comparison with the ammonia route.It is important to acknowledge that each operation is unique, and therefore the information and philosophy outlined in this paper serve to provide a general guide that can be potentially applied and adapted to any site or project."

Misfires in underground and surface production blasts can be costly. Costs can arise from loss of resource, production interruptions, having to redrill or otherwise refire the blast (a hazardous process at best), due to added secondary blasting or breakage, and/or from increased LHD maintenance costs attributable to poor fragmentation.

WITH the exception of the deposits of the Milburn Cement Co near Dunedin, Wilson's Portland Cement Co., on the Mahurangi River (a short distance north of Auckland), and those of the New Zealand Portland Cement Co., at Limestone Island, the cement. Tesources of New Zealand remain practically undeveloped. The Milburn Company utilizes a mixture of limestone and mud for the manufacture of cement, while Wilson's and the New Zealand Portland Cement companies both have the advantage of a natural cement stock which requires but small additions of highgrade limestone to give the mixture required. The plant and deposits of the New Zealand Portland Cement Co are located in Whangarei Harbour, some six miles from thetownship of Whangarei. The works and dwelling-houses are situated on Limestone Island, which, with an area of 92 acres, and rising to a height of 212 ft., supplies the bulk of the raw material required. In addition to the island, the company possesses a high-grade limestone area of, roughly, four acres, situated on the mainland, 11 miles to the south. A better location for a cement works could not well have been chosen. On the east side of the island there is a deep channel, which never shows less than 18 ft. of water alongside the company's...

"Taseko Mines Limited Gibraltar copper-molybdenum mine recommenced operation in 2004 with the initiation of a series of development projects to increase throughput capacity as well as modernize the mine.In the second staged development project, a VTM-1250-WB regrind mill was selected to replace the existing conventional ball regrind mill to achieve a target grind size of 80 % passing 45 µm. In the third staged development project, a second VTM-1250 regrind mill was selected for installation in Concentrator #2, to match the existing Concentrator #1 Vertimill. This resulted in approximately 25% spare regrind capacity in the Concentrator #2 design, complete spare parts interchangeability and potential future expansion capacity to 50,000 t/d with no circuit upgrades.In this context, a study was initiated to assess not only the performance of a Vertimill grinding circuit processing a copper concentrate to a particle size of 80% passing 17 µm but also to provide Taseko’s New Prosperity project specific design information for grinding to particle sizes below 80 % passing 25 µm.The objective of the work described in this presentation was to explore Vertimill ultrafine (sub 100 µm) grinding test methodologies at both the lab and pilot scales, compare the scale-up data with operational data from the VTM1250 at Gibraltar Mines and subsequently apply this information to particle sizes down to 80% passing 17 µm. The mining residues at the abandoned copper mine site Pe±a de Hierro, located at the headwaters of the Rio Tinto, contribute substantially to the pollution of the river with high loads of Fe, As, Pb, Zn and Cu. The pH of the outflow ranges from 0.5 to 2.4 in the dry and wet season, respectively. One heap composed of alternating layers, which were deposited parallel to the slope, was investigated in detail. Unsorted blocky to fine materials including gossan material, pyritic volcanics, ashes from pyrite combustion and slate were observed here. The top of the heap has a gentle slope and a hill contouring channel-rip morphology. The initially rugged surface was smoothed by heavy rainfalls filling up the pores of the blocky material with fines. These fines are capable of storing the water for a prolonged time, providing an extended reaction time close to surface in a dry climate at extremely low pH conditions (one to four). All minerals, pyrite, mica, barite and even quartz (probably due to F released from dissolved mica) have been digested and silica gel precipitates have formed a stable and quasi impermeable 100 ¦m layer with very low porosity (<5 area per cent, estimated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging). The silica layer itself is covered by Fe-oxy-hydroxide (ie FeOOH) coating (10 ¦m) and seals a 1 - 5 mm thick stable hardpan. This hardpan covers the channels and part of the rips almost entirely, guiding the rainwater subhorizontally towards slopes and sinkholes. By geoelectrical measurements, a 3D-resistivity model of the internal structures and the bedrock relief underlying the heap was generated. Internal structures relate to lithological changes in a number of layers. Zones of low resistivity may be attributed to washed-in fines within the mega pore system, whilst zones of high resistivity close to the surface probably reflect the advanced stage of drying beneath aging hardpans. The water movement at the surface was investigated by an artificial precipitation experiment with monitoring of the subsequent changes in resistivities.

Native asphalt was produced in 1982 by five companies in two States, Texas and Utah. Bituminous limestone, used primarily as a paving material for street and road repair, was produced by White Uvalde Mines and by Azrock Industries, Inc., Uvalde County, Tex. Historically, gilsonite, a solidified hydrocarbon found only in Utah and Colorado, had been mined by American Gilsonite Co. and by Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp. from properties near Bonanza, Uintah County, Utah. During 1982, Hydrocarbon Mining Co., a subsidiary of the Oberon Oil Co., entered into a joint venture with Miocene Resources Inc. of Novato, Calif, to form Hydrocarbon Resources Co. for the purpose of mining gilsonite about 50 miles south of Vernal, Uintah County, Utah. Under the agreement, Hydrocarbon Mining contributed gilsonite-bearing properties held by lease or sublease as well as mining equipment to the venture. The property contained leases totaling 760 acres with probable reserves of 268,000 tons of gilsonite. Miocene Resources provided the partnership with a minimum of $200,000 to develop two of the leases and were to be responsible for management of the mining operations.2

As the surface reserves are being depleted, more and more stone operators are seeking underground mining options. Stability of underground openings is a major concern for the safety and productivity. This paper relates to a field study conducted at a large underground limestone mine in Central Pennsylvania. Identification of hazards leading to ground failures and assessment of roof fall risks are important in mitigating injuries. Field observations at this mine were integrated with Roof Fall Risk Index (RFRI) mapping software recently developed by West Virginia University. The system is designed to combine field study data related to geologic factors, mining-induced damages, roof profile, and ground water influx to generate RFRI maps. The mine has adopted a proactive ground control program consisting of comprehensive examination of drilling and bolting logs; precision surveying of roof and rib; accurate mapping of cutters, falls, and geologic structures; and installation of extensometers and microseismic monitoring systems. Investment of time and resources has eliminated fatalities and lost-time injuries due to ground fall. This paper presents the geologic settings, mining conditions, ground control issues along with risk management and control techniques adopted at the study mine.

An overview is given of some of the major mining research activities in Australia. Automation of mining equipment is not an objective in its own right. The objective is to improve the safety and the economic performance of mining operations. Automation can be a useful method for achieving this objective. There is a strong focus on mining equipment automation and related issues and specific examples of ongoing and recently completed automation projects are described.

Two magnetic parameters are proposed as a basis for the assessment of ironsands beneficiation. The parameters are determined for raw sand prior to dredging and for magnetic separator head feed over a production period of five months. The relationships between these parameters and the performance of the magnetic separators are examined to establish the value of magnetic assessment compared with the traditional soluble iron assay method. The results illustrate that the first parameter, true magnetic fraction (TMF). Has a value superior to that of soluble iron when relating raw sand grade calculated by triangulation to magnet performance. In terms of the relationship between magnet head feed grade and magnet performance, TMF and soluble iron perform equally as assessment parameters. For the ironsands mined during the five month period, the second magnetic assessment parameter, composite fraction (CF), is shown to merely reflect TMF and offers no additional information for assessment. Conclusions are that true magnetic fraction has many advantages over soluble iron in terms of time and cost of determination and that it is a meaningful and reliable parameter upon which to base all calculations relating to the mining and beneficiation of ironsands.

With a price slowly rising above US$35 per ounce gold became a mineral worthy of prospecting and mining endeavour in the early to mid 1970s. Fortune therefore appeared to smile onNew Zealand with its favourable geological environment for gold and past record of major gold production from both hard rock and placer deposits. This was a particularly welcome development as the post war years, including both the base metal exploration boom of 1967/1971 (which produced major nickel, iron and bauxite mines in Australia) and the earlier period of uranium exploration failed to produce any mines in New Zealand with the exception of the small Tui Mine and iron sand mining. Whilst hard rock mining now appears imminent it is 15 years further along the track since the 1967/1971 exploration boom and eight years since the upsurge in prospecting for gold in 1978. New Zealand still has no hard rock base or precious metal mining. This is not for want of proven or potential gold mining situations for these clearly exist at Waihi, Monowai Reef, Golden Cross, MacRaes Flat and elsewhere.

Continued market pressure on the US coal industry was the overriding factor affecting developments in underground mining in 1986. An oversupply of coal in the spot market kept prices low throughout the year and caused a number of operations to close their doors. Operators stepped up their efforts to improve productivity at existing operations. They made technology advances and improved their relations with employees. A continuing market-related development during 1986 was the divesting of coal properties and operations by major oil companies, which were faced with economic pressures in both the oil and coal industries. Further increases in contract mining production resulted as some larger operators were unable to compete in a tough economic environment. Longwall mining is still seen by many as the technology that will provide the necessary productivity to remain cost-effective. But the number of active faces in the US declined in 1986, as reserves were depleted and economics forced some closures. At the first Longwall USA meeting in June, much attention was placed on improved technology, as electro-hydraulic controls for roof supports gained acceptance. Other recent developments include shearer initiation of roof supports, automatic horizon control for shearer drums, and collection and storage of machine data for predicting maintenance requirements. The government and academic communities continued their research on dust control at longwall faces. Jankowski, Kissel, and Daniel, (October 1986, Mining Engineering), gave an overview of progress in longwall dust control. And Mukherjee, Singh and Jayarman (November 1986, Mining Engineering), recommended design guidelines for improving water spray systems for dust control. Surface subsidence Increasing attention is being given to surface subsidence. This is primarily because of longwall mining and the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act. Improved methods of prediction of surface subsidence, especially computerized methods, are being continually developed. Mining engineering faculty at major universities such as Virginia are helping develop public policy and regulations concerning subsidence. As part of this effort, Unrug and Johnson identified major subsidence areas of Western Kentucky. Peng and Chen (February 1986, Mining Engineering), gave an overview of history and research of surface subsidence. And Elifrits and Aughenbaugh, (February 1986, Mining Engineering), discussed effects of moisture variations and overburden on subsidence. This research culminated in a Symposium on Surface Subsi¬dence at the SME 1986 Fall Meeting in St. Louis and the 2nd Workshop on Surface Subsidence at West Virginia University. Ground control in coal mining continued to be an item of major research interest. Some 30 papers were presented at the 5th International Conference on Ground Control in Mining at West Virginia University. And six sessions were related to coal mining at the 27th US Symposium on Rock Mechanics at the University of Alabama. At the 4th Annual Workshop, Generic Mineral Technology Center, Mine Systems Design and Ground Control emphasized efforts of the participating universities to improve ground control. Peng and Chiang summarized results of studying support capacity and roof behavior with longwall shield supports. And Unrug, Johnson, and Nandy analyzed the process of deterioration of shale roof in a case study of a room-and-pillar coal mine. The importance of geologic conditions in determining mining productivity is receiving increased attention in coal mine design in the US. Mullenex related, through case studies, the benefits to be derived through analyzing the depositional system of coalbeds as an integral part of mine design. Improved technology in this area was related by Lloyd, Semborski, and Stolarczyk. They discussed a case study of using radio imaging to indicate coal-seam discontinuities in advance of mining. Improved coal mining technology in general is being researched more heavily, to help improve US coal competitiveness. However, much of this research and development process has yet to be widely implemented. Exploration record In preparing this paper, a list of world class discoveries prepared in 1983 has been updated. In both surveys, the following criteria were used in the definition of world class discoveries: • deposits that are continuously operated and consistently return a profit even in periods of low metal prices; • deposits large enough to significantly affect a medium sized corporation's profits; and • these deposits should be in the lower one-third cost per unit of metal produced for all similar deposits. Only 70 discoveries in the last 40 years qualified as world class deposits using these criteria. Unfortunately, this restricted population was too low to develop meaningful trends. The numbers were therefore enlarged to include all significant discoveries. The principal feature of a significant discovery is that its size and grade would yield more than $500 million in revenue using average metal prices for the last five years. A significant deposit should also meet some of the standards for a world class deposit. A tabulation of these deposits are shown in Table 1. The number of discoveries increased to 166 from 70 using the revised classification. The relationship between the number of discoveries per year and their location by continents was prepared from these data. Figure 1 shows the number of discoveries per year for the nonCommunist world. It also shows estimated and actual nonCommunist world exploration expenditures per year and the commodity price index. These data show that modern exploration started in the late 1940s, with the tempo picking up rapidly in the 1950s. The maximum discovery rate occurred in 1962. Thereafter, the discovery rate gradually declined to the present. This occurred despite a real increase in expenditures from about $200 million/a in 1955 (1982 constant dollars) to more than $900 million/a in 1980. Thus, these data suggest a significant decrease in the exploration success ratio (total exploration expenditures a year divided by the number of significant discoveries) in the last 20 years. As an example, $70 million was spent for each significant discovery in the early 1960s as compared with $225 million in the late 1970s (expressed in 1982 constant dollars). However, with the general declining trend of discoveries, one can perceive a more pronounced drop in 1973 and then a sudden increase in 1974, 1975, and 1976. This increase is probably related to the inflation of the 1970s that in turn created an environment for the explosion of commodity prices, as shown by the commodity price index on Fig. 1. Thereafter, the decline in discoveries resumed in 1975 until the present. Exploration performance by regions North American discoveries are shown in Fig. 2. The graph shows three pronounced high discovery peaks in 1962, 1975, and 1980-81.
