This report presents evidence indicating that when rock is stress-relieved during the course of mining or in drilling a core, it may be altered or damaged to the extent that the physical properties of the relieved specimen are not the same as those of the in situ rock. Furthermore, this type of damage may result from stress change other than that accompanying stress relief, such as the application of a relatively large compressive stress. In some instances the damage is microscopic, manifesting itself as incipient cracks or the failure of individual crystal bonds. However, if the sample is taken from a high-stress area, macroscopic damage may occur.

"Continuous mining systems containing multiple excavators producing multiple products of raw materials are highly complex, exhibiting strong interdependency between constituents. Furthermore, random variables govern the system, which causes uncertainty in the supply of raw materials: uncertainty in knowledge about the reserve, the quantity demanded by the customers, and the breakdown of equipment. This paper presents a stochastic-based mine process simulator capturing different sources of uncertainties. It aims to quantify the effect of geological uncertainty and its impacts on the ability to deliver contractually defined quantities and qualities of coal, and on the system efficiency in terms of utilization of major equipment. Two different areas of research are combined: geostatistical simulation for capturing geological uncertainty, and stochastic process simulation to predict the performance and reliability of a large continuous mining system.The process of modelling and simulation in this specific production environment is discussed in detail. Problem specification and a new integrated simulation approach are presented. A case study in a large coal mine is used to demonstrate the impacts and evaluate the results in terms of reaching optimal production control decisions to increase average equipment utilization and control coal quality and quantity. This paper gives a brief overview of impacts of coal blending on coal-fired power plants performance and discuses the preliminary results of an on-going study aimed at evaluating the effect of coal properties on the effectiveness, compatibility and thermal reactivity of coal blends. Plant survey studies reported no significant impacts on an existing plant designed for a high rank coal when switched to a blend of low- and high- rank coal. However, slight modification of some aspects (handling, fuel storage/stockpile, transportation, preparation, and general housekeeping) of plant design and operation may be necessary. The preliminary results of an on-going study at the Mineral Industry Research Laboratory shows that more compatible and better blends could be made from coals where ranks are closer than from those where ranks are far apart.

Extending an organization?s knowledge base throughout the entire enterprise can improve operations. Until recently, though, field operations were often left out of the information loop, as extending high-bandwidth communications into harsh environments often proved impossible due to thermal extremes, physical hazards and caustic chemicals. However, advances in the design and manufacture of rugged fiberoptic cables have now enabled the successful installation of 10-gigabit transmission links to places such as mining operations. The experience of Consol Energy exemplifies how plant managers can successfully enlist ruggedized tight buffered cables to help carry the efficiency of ERP communications into even the most challenging work environments. ?As part of our ERP implementation, we extended our corporate network underground into our mines using fi beroptic cable,? said Tom Prokop, manager-site support for Consol Energy. ?We?ve actually had rooffalls bury the cable between rocks and still did not lose data communications. Our maintenance personnel are now able to access our ERP system while underground at locations that can be up to 32 km (20 miles) away from their desks or the warehouse. Access to the corporate network allows them to order parts, look at electronic schematics, access monitoring data, no matter where they are in the mine. With a few hundred workers below ground, this immediate access translates into a time-savings that adds up in a hurry.?

High-production methods like longwall mining with hydraulic powered supports are necessary to increase underground coal production in India. Longwall mining had a mixed success record for Indian geo-mining conditions. In this paper, an analysis is presented to optimally design an array of chain pillars in multi-seam longwall mining panels in the deepest coal mine in India. The study found that a chain pillar of 80-m width and 195-m length is necessary for long-term stability without any reinforcement. It was also observed that an optimum chain pillar can be designed by providing suitable side reinforcement (side bolting) which will reduce the chain pillar dimensions to 55-m width and 160-m length. Optimum design of chain pillars will reduce the coal locked up in these chain pillars by ~ 77%. This will also reduce the gestation period of longwall mining panel development. This paper also evaluates the maximum tensile subsidence strain induced at the surface and finds that the values are within the safe working limit of 3 mm/m. Thus, this paper finds direct application in the design of future multi-seam retreating longwall mining panels in Indian geo-mining conditions.

Contractual site plans are implemented for executing pile foundations (5 x 5) at segmental concrete bridge. Project schedule demands have forced the contractor to find out the most economical procedure in achieving the goal. This paper presents a site management technique which is applied by the Contractor. This was found to be fruitful and as much as 60% saving was gained.

Feed slurries are typically flocculated in a thickenerÆs feedwell to increase the settling rate, underflow density and overflow clarity. High molecular weight polymeric flocculants are normally used, but present a number of challenges in terms of make up, dilution, delivery and mixing with the feed slurry.Various aspects of the flocculant dilution and delivery system have been studied with a combination of flow visualisation and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). An open topped flocculant dilution/mixing box has been developed to replace a conventional flocculant manifold, with improvements to the mixing, fault diagnosis and ease of determining the flow split to the various dosing points. The addition points to the feedwell have also been studied, both in terms of where the flocculant is added, and how. While conventional multi-hole spargers are effective in dispersing flocculant, they are prone to blocking and have been replaced by open-ended pipes. The required dispersion is provided by an efficient mixing element placed in the dilution port. Adding the flocculant into the feedwell dilution stream prior to mixing with the slurry also provides super-dilution of the flocculant that can further improve the flocculation process and reduce flocculant consumption.CITATION:Heath, A R and Arbuthnot, I, 2013. This study focused on acidic wastewater from producing sulfuric acid system in zinc smelter containing mercury 21.48mg/L, zinc 55.85mg/L, lead 38.50mg/L, copper 1.68mg/L, cadmium 10.25mg/L, As 29.86mg/L treated by biologics. The factors of pH value, the ratio of biologics to mercury, complexing time, hydrolytic time and temperature were studied in this paper. Experimental results indicated that at pH value 10, quantity of biologics to mercury ratio was 16, complexing time 30min, hydrolyzation time 20min, temperature at 40?, concentration of mercury in treated water was removed to 22.15µg/L. At same time heavy metals such as Zn, Pb, Cu, Cd, As was removed by biologics, the remained concentration in treated water was Zn 0.53mg/L, Pb 0.12mg/L, Cu 0.01mg/L, Cd low to 0.01mg/L and As 0.023mg/L. According to EDAX analysis, mercury content in complexing sediment reached 28.49% easily to recycle as raw material and low concentration of heavy metals in hydrolytic sediment easily to dispose and treat.

In 2011, two historic outcrop rocks known as Teffé and Itapema located in the navigation channel of the Port of Santos, Brazil (Latin America’s largest port) – were excavated by drilling and blasting techniques. Sensitive structures - a passenger terminal and an 80-year old warehouse were exposed to ground vibrations generated by underwater blasting. The warehouse had existing structural problems due to a combination of factors such as the presence of an unstable soil, previous repair work, and intense seismic events generated by the daily traffic of cargo trains nearby during eight decades. Since the worsening state of the structure was attributed to ground vibration from underwater blasting, particle velocity time histories generated by underwater blasting and by passing trains were monitored. By analyzing the energy spectral density of these events using spectrograms, it was possible to observe the seismic energy levels in time and spectral domains. Since the hysteretic energy dissipation by structures is related to the duration of the seismic event and the limited dissipation capacity of the structure, one could expect damages to appear in the structure once energy levels exceeded this dissipation capacity. As the quantity of energy transmitted to the structure is proportional to the duration of the seismic event, the transmission of seismic energy to the warehouse structure over time was more significant in the case of the train-induced ground vibrations (several minutes) than those generated by the underwater blasting (few seconds). Thus, for the warehouse, train-induced ground vibrations have a larger impact on the structure rather than ground vibration generated by controlled underwater blasting techniques.

"Granular activated carbon is widely used in the gold mining industry for gold extraction from aurocyanide-containing slurry. The extraction process can employ carbon as part of the gold recovery operation for various circuit designs including carbon-in-pulp (CIP), carbon-in-column (CIC), and carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuits. However, various qualities of activated carbon exist and the durability of the material can change significantly from source to source. Handling this expensive reagent can pose challenges when fine carbon losses occur in the CIP, CIC, and CIL circuits. Additionally, any gold that is adsorbed to these carbon fines can also be lost by various mechanisms including carbon attrition and fracturing, inefficient coarse-fine separation, and poor carbon fines capture. With the above in mind, a series of tests were conducted to investigate standardizing simple laboratory methods for testing carbon quality. A standard procedure beyond or enhancing ASTM methods can serve as additional starting points for evaluating carbon specific to the gold industry. The investigation focused on size distribution, flatness, wet attrition resistance, surface area, gold kinetics, and gold loading. The final results provided information to generate an equation for ranking carbon samples to plant performance.IntroductionActivated carbon for use in gold extraction is amongst the most commonly found processes in modern gold-milling plants. "The Louvicourt Mine located near Val d’Or, Quebec has been in operation since 1994. It produces copper and zinc concentrates. The tailings generated from the ore processing operations have a strong net acid generating potential. Louvicourt Mine, a grass root project, was designed for closure with the best available technology at the time of design. In order to inhibit short and long time acid potential generation, sub-aqueous disposal was selected at the design stage. Given the fact that disposal in a natural lake was ruled out up front for obvious reasons related to loss of natural habitat and risks of permitting delays, a man made facility built with dams was planned. This mine includes therefore the first fully man-made sub-aqueous tailings disposal facility built in Canada. The requirement of using sub-aqueous disposal had serious implications on the placement of tailings. This tailings facility located about 9 km from the mine site has been selected based on the available natural confinement, the favorable foundation and hydrogeological conditions. This paper describes the site and the design criteria that were used. A presentation is also made on the placement technique to maximize storage and its impact on the operation of the basin. The performance of the basin, the dams and the decant structures is reviewed.Résumé : La mine Louvicourt, située près de Val d’Or, Québec est opérationnelle depuis 1994. Elle produit des concentrés de cuivre et de zinc. Les résidus générés par les opérations de traitement du minerai possèdent un fort potentiel net de génération d’acide. Le parc à résidus de la mine Louvicourt, implanté dans un milieu naturel intact, fut doté dès sa conception initiale de la meilleure technologie de fermeture disponible à l’époque, soit la déposition sous couverture aqueuse et ce, dans le but de bloquer le potentiel de génération d’acide à court et à long terme des résidus. Etant donné que la déposition dans un lac naturel fut mise de côté dès le départ pour des raisons évidentes reliées à la perte d’habitats naturels et au risque d’introduire des délais dans l’émission des permis, un étang artificiel délimité par des digues a été conçu. Cette mine fut donc la première au Canada à être dotée d’une installation anthropique de disposition des résidus sous une pleine couverture aqueuse. L’exigence d’une déposition sous couverture aqueuse a eu des implications sur le mode de mise en place des résidus. L’emplacement de l’installation de gestion des résidus a été choisi en un lieu situé à environ 9 km du concentrateur sur la base du confinement naturel disponible et des conditions hydrogéologiques et géotechniques favorables. Cet article décrit le site et les critères de conception utilisés. Une présentation est faite sur la technique de mise en place utilisée pour maximiser l’entreposage et son impact sur l’opération du bassin. La performance du bassin, des digues et des structures de décantation est également revue."

Minor subsidence damage to the Burgettstown Junior-Senior High School building and grounds near Burgettstown, Washington County, Pennsylvania, prompted an investigation of the site in early 1985 by the Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources. The investigation determined that subsidence over an abandoned coal mine was occurring and that additional damaging subsidence would occur if reclamation measures were not taken. A Pittsburgh Coal Seam Mine which was abandoned in the 1920's underlies the school at a depth of sixty-five (65) feet. This sixty-five foot section is comprised of five (5) feet of unconsolidated overburden and sixty (60) feet of thinly bedded, highly fractured shale. Approximately five and one-half (5-1/2) feet of Pittsburgh Coal was extracted at the school site. A thin shale binder and one (1) to one and one-half (1-1/2) feet of roof coal were left in place. Within the Contractor's Underground Working Area (See Figure 1) approximately thirty (30) percent of the coal was extracted. It appears that the mine was just being developed in the vicinity of the school when it was abandoned for no known reason. Other nearby portions of the mine show extraction approaching sixty-five (65) percent.

Tumbling mills and some theoretical and practical aspects of milling are discussed. Attention is directed towards the difficulty of relating the dynamical analyses of the motions of particles within mills to the existing treatments of breakage processes. This synthesis may be advanced by a study of milling that utilizes the matrix analysis of breakage processes. Application of the matrix analysis to results obtained on (i) grinding in open-circuit a zinc ore in a conical pebble mill and in a modified conical mill, (ii) "grinding of cement clinker in a compound mill, and (iii) to some drop-weight grindability tests is discussed. It is shown that the 'IT-breakage model adequately describes the breakage processes of each of the tests. (The proportion broken in each breakage cycle is given by 'IT and is independent of particle size.)The size distributions of the products are accurately predicted in the cases considered. Matrix analyses of the breakage of coals, various ores and a cement clinker have been made. Appendices give an elementary account of the matrix methods and give the equations fully describing reverse order closed circuit operations. NIOSH has developed an active proximity warning system called HASARD (Hazardous Area Signaling and Ranging Device) for warning workers as they approach known dangerous areas around heavy mining equipment and other dangerous work zones. HASARD is composed of a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter generates a 60-kHz magnetic field using one or more wire loop antennas. Each antenna is adjusted to establish a magnetic field pattern for each hazardous area. The receiver, worn by the worker, is a magnetic field strength meter. The received signal is compared against preset levels which are calibrated to identify levels of danger. The receiver outputs can include visual, audible, and vibratory indicators and it can also be made to disable machine functions. HASARD was field tested on a Joy 12 continuous miner, a Komatsu 210 M Haulpak, and on a highwall launch vehicle. Slight modifications were made for each application. HASARD provided warnings as designed and proved to be rugged enough to withstand the harshest of production environments.

The chlorination rate with CCl4 was unexpectedly slower than carbochlorination using chlorine under the same reaction conditions. Chlorination with CCl4 was topochemical and the amount of monazite reacted after different periods suggested that the kinetic control step was the reaction between CCl4 and the monazite core at the interface. Investigations of world wide coal face strata control practice, the study of theoretical calculations and detailed engineering analysis have been combined to design and select a powered roof support suitable for use in conjunction with the extraction of 4.5-m (14.7- ft) of the 7.5-m (24.6-ft) thick Warwickshire Thick Coal Seam. The interface between geotechnical criteria and engineering design has been closely considered along with the following 3 important factors: Firstly, the need to further improve strata control and operational characteristics whilst producing a wall integrated overall face design. Secondly, to enable the supports to be rapidly transported from face to face in roadways driven at the minimum size for operational requirements. Finally, to provide hydraulic power, automatic control and monitoring systems which will improve operations reduce manpower requirements and improve management information. Clear design requirements were determined in order to allow selection on a commercial basis. A method of tendering is described with the subsequent analysis and selection process. In the event oversupply of coal in the UK resulted in the order not being placed. Brief consideration has been given to supports suitable for reserves to be mined In a few year's time where there is potential for extraction well in excess of 4.5-m (1 4.74.
