Eighteen coarse taconite tailings samples were collected in 2000-2001 from five western Mesabi Range taconite (iron ore) operations located in northern Minnesota, i.e., EVTAC, Hibbing Taconite (Hibtac), USX Minntac, Ispat Inland (Minorca), and National Steel Pellet Company (NSPC), to test their physical, geological, chemical, and mineralogical properties [Zanko, L.M., Niles, H.B., Oreskovich, J.A., 2003. Properties and aggregate potential of coarse taconite tailings from five Minnesota taconite operations, Minnesota Department of Transportation, Local Road Research Board, St. Paul, MN, Report No. 2004-06 (also as Natural Resources Research Institute technical report, NRRI/TR-2003/44)]. The goal was to assemble a body of technical data that could be used to better assess the potential of using a crushed taconite mining byproduct like coarse tailings for more widespread construction aggregate purposes, primarily in roads and high¬ways. An important part of the mineralogical assessment included X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses and microscopic (polarized light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy, i.e., PLM, SEM, and TEM, respectively) evaluation of the size and shape (morphological) characteristics of potentially respirable microscopic mineral particles and fragments. Quantitative mineralogy, based on XRD analyses, showed that the dominant mineral in all samples was quartz (55-60%), followed by much smaller amounts of iron oxides, carbonates, and silicates. Specialized microscopic analyses and testing performed by the RJ Lee Group, Monroeville, PA, on both pulverized (-200 mesh, or 0.075 mm) and as-is sample composites showed that no regulated asbestos minerals or amphibole minerals were detected in the western Mesabi Range samples. A small number (26) of non-asbestos and non¬amphibole mineral cleavage fragments/mineral fibers were detected by SEM out of 1000 fields analyzed, but most were identified as min¬nesotaite and talc, silicate minerals common to the Biwabik Iron Formation. Amphibole minerals, absent in coarse tailings samples from the five western Mesabi Range taconite operations, were present in a single eastern Biwabik Iron Formation sample collected in 2003 for Lake County from the Cliffs Northshore operation in Silver Bay, MN. Importantly, the Superfund Method for the Determination of Releasable Asbestos in Soils and Bulk Materials [United States Environ¬mental Protection Agency (USEPA), 1997. Superfund method for the determination of releasable asbestos in soils and bulk materials, EPA 540-R-97-028, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington], as modified by Berman and Kolk [Berman, D.W., Kolk, A.J., 2000. Modified elutriator method for the determination of asbestos in soils and bulk materials, Revision 1: Submitted to the U.S. Envi¬ronmental Protection Agency, Region 8, May 23, 2000] failed to generate any protocol fibers, i.e., fibers longer than 5 µm and thinner than 0.5 µm, from either the western coarse tailings samples or the single eastern Biwabik Iron Formation sample. The combined findings suggest coarse tailings and other taconite mining byproducts should be treated with the same common sense safety and industrial hygiene approach practiced for all mineral-based materials that have the potential to generate respirable dust. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. This paper, in its first part, compares the profile and economic weight in the extraction of industrial minerals and aggregates to the so called conventional mining activities (metals, coal, gas and oil extraction) in Brazil. In its second part, a descriptive analysis of the present situation of the education in Brazil is made, emphasizing the graduation and post-graduation formation especially in engineering. The curricular structure of the schools that prepare the mining workforce is discussed and the presence of specific subjects in industrial minerals is evaluated. Finally, considerations are made on the actions being taken in the main universities and companies, aiming to improve the formation of the specialized workforce. The Brazilian mining production, comparing 2010 to 2011 showed an expansion of more than 3% (IBGE, 2012). Not bad, but nothing to do with the 13% growth between 2010 and 2009 (influenced by a recovery effect from the 2008 commodities? nightmare). The commodities that had a rising behavior were titanium, gypsum, nickel, graphite, bauxite, phosphate, chrome and chrysotile. All of them were eclipsed by the impressive growth of iron ore production. Some decreases could be noticed, eg. in zinc, kaolin, magnesite and salt production (DNPM, 2012). In fact, the mining activities followed the positive growth of the country these last 5 years. The commercial balance (exports against imports) was not spectacular (positive in US$ 30 billion in 2010). It is important to notice that the mineral commodities balance was US$ 35 billion, representing 27.4% of the total exports and 15.6% of the total imports of Brazil (DNPM, 2012). In this positive environment, the workforce in Brazil showed progress in number of formal jobs and average revenues.

When mining operations of The Eagle-Picher Co. began in the Illinois-Wisconsin zinc mining field in 1949, all underground loading of broken ore and waste was by caterpillar-tracked machines. Beginning in 1956 rubber-tired end-loaders were brought in; ultimately they completely supplanted the tracked units. End-loaders proved to have the mobility needed for the mining conditions and additional merit in auxiliary capacities. Eagle-Picher operates five mines in this area; two are entered by shafts and three by inclined adits. Several ore zones, some of which are attenuated over a considerable distance, are worked from the same entry. Consequently underground haulage roads connecting or following these orebodies have attained great length. In addition, working places are often widely separated because of the character of the mining operations which include pillar recovery and extending haulage connections into old workings. At one mine, the haulage distance is 5000 ft on either side of the shaft, at another the maximum one-way distance is 8400 ft, and at another the present road system of 6800 ft is expected to reach 10,000 to 12,000 ft.

The applicability of the "direct method" for determining the methane content of virgin coalbeds was tested. Preliminary results indicate that the direct method, when applied to exploration cores, can be successfully used to estimate coalbed gas content and also approximately predict the total gas emission from a prospective mine located in the coalbed at the exploration site.

A larger measure of safety attended the operation of the stone quarries and related plants in the United States during the calendar year 1935 than in any other year for which annual records are available for the industry. The accident rate, covering fatalities and nonfatal injuries that disabled an employee beyond the remainder of the day on which the accident occurred, was 38.19 per million man-hours of work performed. The nearest approach to this favorable record was in 1932 when the rate was 38.48. The rate for 1934 was 41.82; hence the record for 1935 was 9 percent better than that for 1934. Reports from operating companies showed that 51 men were killed by accidents in 1935 and 4,152 men were injured. (See table 37.) The industry employed 73,005 men and performed 110,033,341 man-hours of labor, an average of 1,507 hours of work per man. Measured in man-days, the total volume of labor was 14,623,303, or an average of 200 days of 7.52 hours per day for each man employed. These figures are not strictly comparable with similar figures for the preceding year, as the, coverage of the industry was more complete for 1935 than for 1934 because special facilities were available to the Bureau of Mines for conducting the 1935 canvass that were not available for the 1934 canvass. Reports covering identical plants that were active both in 1934 and 1935 indicate a reduction of about 7 percent in the number of men employed in 1935. This fact suggests that the apparent increase in the number of workers in 1935 is attributable chiefly, if not entirely, to the more complete coverage of operating plants in 1935. The plants from which this inference is drawn employed 21,799 men in 1934 compared with 20,248 in 1935.

"Decarburization phenomena on the surface of liquid iron have been simulated by numerical method and the results were compared to the experimental data. During the DeC process in a converter, a large amount of splashed droplets are generated from the top surface of the bath and consequently the reaction surface area is increasing tremendously. Since the decarburization mainly occurs at the interface, it is important to understand the reactions on the liquid iron droplets. The flow and species concentration fields around liquid droplets taking into account the reaction of carbon with oxygen at the interface were calculated by a commercial CFD code FLUENT which solving multiphase Navier-Stokes equation with Volume Of Fluid method, species transport equations and energy transport equation. The initial carbon concentration was fixed to 4 wt% and the concentrations of oxygen in the atmosphere were varied from 5 to 50 wt%. As comparing the numerical calculation with experimental data written in the reference, the results have a good agreement for decarburization rate.IntroductionIn a primary steelmaking process, one of the main functions is to decarburize from hot metal and the 4% of carbon is decreased to about 0.5% of carbon. Even though there are some possible reactions leading to the removal of carbon from hot metal, the main reaction occurs on the free surface by direct oxidation of carbon at the gas-liquid interface with producing the carbon monoxide gas. In many metallurgical processes involving a jet impinging onto a steel bath surface, especially in a Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) converter, it is important to understand the behavior of molten iron droplets splashing out of the steel. The iron droplets are generated by an oxygen or air jet blowing and it increases the total surface area of liquid iron tremendously. Since the decarburization reaction is mainly affected by the surface area, it is necessary to verify the decarburization phenomena around the splashed droplets from liquid iron in order to allow an analysis ofBOF process possible."

Gums are often used as depressants for talceous gangue minerals in the flotation of nickel and platinum bearing ores. However, the mechanisms of gum adsorption on talc are not clearly established. In this work, adsorption of guar gum at the talc-solution interface is investigated using spectroscopic and allied techniques. Guar gum adsorption on talc is not affected significantly by changes in solution conditions such as pH and ionic strength. Electrokinetic studies showed that guar gum decreased the negative zeta potential of talc but did not reverse the charge. Fluorescence spectroscopy studies conducted to investigate the role of hydrophobic bonding using pyrene and dansyl probes showed no evidence of the formation of hydrophobic domains at talc-aqueous interface. Urea, a hydrogen bond breaker, reduced the adsorption of guar on talc to the same extent as that for guar/alumina system, in which hydrogen bond plays an important role. All of the above results suggest that one of the main driving forces for guar adsorption on talc is hydrogen bonding rather than electrostatic or hydrophobic force.

In mining, water management is an operational necessity, requiring planning and detailed engineering, as well as risk assessment. Yet, the hydrology of streams and aquifers typically extends well beyond the boundaries of mine operations and intersect with environmental and social values. Mine managers often plan, design and assess the impact of water management activities (such as dewatering, excess water disposal and flood management) with a mine site or process specific focus. The challenge is that the impacts are spatial, long-term and complex – and may be cumulative across multiple mine sites. Further, there is usually little consideration of the feedbacks and interactions between surface water, groundwater and catchment hydrology. Failure to understand these processes can lead to poor decisions and increased costs. This presentation outlines an approach to simulating integrated hydrology in mining catchments that addresses the shortcomings of traditional modelling techniques.CITATION:Graham, D N and Szylkarski, S, 2016. The stockpiling and reclaiming of bulk materials can be a challenging task for engineers seeking the optimum solution for plant needs, reliability, and at lowest unit cost. The objective of this paper will be to expose advantages, disadvantages and limitations of many storage and reclaiming systems to the responsible engineer and management. The paper will emphasize the practical aspect of stockpiling and reclaiming methods. Many valuable and interesting papers are available dealing with the theoretical viewpoint and application of a particular manufacturer's machine. Several of these are mentioned in the bibliography. As many practical parameters as possible will be given. After twenty years in the field of designing and selling bulk materials handling systems, the needs of the user and the plant are recognized and reasonably understood. This paper cannot give solutions to all problems In this vast field but will stress practical applications and examples of various installations. The evolution of advancements in materials handling is based upon not only technological innovations, but learning from many experiences of others and utilizing them as stepping stones to improved installations.

"Increasing pressure are motivating the gold mining industry to develop a substitute to cyanide for leaching gold. This effort in mainly based on the high toxicity of cyanide and on the lack of efficiency of cyanide in the treatment of mildly refractory gold ores (sulfides and pre-robbing). Consequently, in only a few years, consortia have been created to elucidate and implement a new technology. The most promising lixiviant that has been selected to replace cyanide is thiosulfate. This paper will present a critical analysis on the latest developments in thiosulfate leaching and illustrate the potential and limitations of the technology with experimental data. Finally an assessment of the cost and performance of thiosulfate leaching relative cyanidation will be evaluated.INTRODUCTIONConcerns regarding the toxicity of cyanide and inability of cyanide solution to effectively leach some carbonaceous gold ore or mild refractory gold ores have made the gold mining industry evaluate alternative lixiviants to leach gold. This concern has been heightened recently by the cyanide spill at a mine in Romania, which devastated a 250-mile stretch of the Danube River and its tributaries, and the environmental damage at Ok Tedi mine in Papua New Guinea. Some countries and locations have prohibited the application of cyanidation to recover gold, such as, California and Colorado States, Japan and Turkey etc.There are several potential non-cyanide lixiviants (Sparrow and Woodcock, 1995) for gold extraction, such as thiosulfate, thiourea and halogen. A pilot feasibility test (Marchant and Broughton, 1987) had suggested that thioureation might result in acutely toxic byproducts even after treatment. Scientists of Swedish Academic of Sciences reported that thiourea is a carcinogen. Halogen is also a pollutant to the environment. Thiosulfate leaching appears to have very good potential as an effective and less hazardous procedure for gold and silver extraction from auriferous ores. In addition to being much less toxic and relatively cheap, it forms a stable anionic complex with gold but is less reactive to other metals, for instances, copper and carbonaceous materials, in comparison with cyanide."

This study of the preparation characteristics of the coals in Indiana County, Pa., is the second in a series of Bureau publications appraising the Nation's coking-coal reserves by counties and the practicability of upgrading marginal deposits to metallurgical standards. The first publication dealt with the preparation characteristics of the principal coal beds in Cambria County, Pa. Over 95 percent of the coal remaining in Indiana County is in the Upper Freeport, Lower Freeport, and Lower Kittanning beds. Isolated patches of Pittsburgh-bed coal are present, and the Upper Kittanning bed is found in minable thickness at some locations, but production from these sources is not large. The greatest production is from the Freeport beds, which account for nearly 70 percent of the Indiana County coal output. These beds usually contain two or more shale or hone partings and in many places are high in sulfur. The large proportion of bony coal in the Freeport beds 'produces a relatively high-ash product. Mining practices vary from place to place, but it is frequently necessary to leave certain bony portions of the bed in place in order to load a satisfactory product. Table 1 shows the county's coal production, by beds, during 1948.

Most primary-molybdenite producers use a selective-flotation process in which molybdenite is floated from the ore while other sulfide and non-sulfide gangue minerals are depressed in the same step (Figure 1). The process was developed at the Climax mill. Reagents used in the rougher-flotation stage include vapor oil (collector), syntex (surfactant), pine oil (frother) and occasionally sodium cyanide and Nokes reagent (depressant). Rougher concentrate is upgraded by cleaner flotation to produce market-grade molybdenite concentrates. Reagents used in the cleaner flotation stage are Dowfroth 250, vapor oil, sodium cyanide and Nokes reagent. The development of the flotation reagent scheme at Climax and the role of the reagents have been well described by Born, et al, (1976) and Malhotra, et al, (1976, 1977a, 1977b, 1977c, 1980). The hydrocarbon collector, vapor oil, accounts for approximately 50 percent of the total molybdenite-flotation reagent cost. Because vapor oil sources are limited, and the cost of vapor oil has increased significantly over the last decade, several studies have been done to evaluate alternate oil-based collectors and/or blends of collectors which would produce similar metallurgical results at a reduced cost, or increase the overall molybdenite recovery at the same cost (Smit and Bhasin, 1983; Hahn, 1969; Smith and Bhappu, 1971). The approach taken in the present study was to evaluate alternate non-oil based collectors and collector systems that are less expensive than vapor oil.

Ore reserves are inadequately defined. Geological reconnaissance and pre-feasibility mining work generate a broad range of valid tonnage estimates, many published for the benefit of various interests, who may view all figures as reserves. This work reviews the regular estimation of tonnages, grades and relevant factors for single deposits. A consistent framework of definition is suggested which, by conforming to the known structures of feasibility studies and long-range plans, avoids the pitfalls of over-categorisation and of unrealistic promises. Applications are based on North American experience but are intended for general use

GENERALTHE coal deposit, where it is being worked, consists of a bed of brown coal varying in thickness from 120 ft. to 200 ft., covered by an overburden of clay, drift, loam, etc., of a thickness of 22 ft. to 40 ft., and averaging 28 ft.The overburden is first entirely removed from the coal, and then the coal is excavated by. large revolving shovels which work at the bottom of the hole or open cut in the coal and deliver it in shovel bucketfuls to the transport system. The shovels owned by the Commission and available for this coal excavation are two Bucyrus steam revolving shovels, one being type 150B, weighing 150 tons, having a 21-cub. yd. bucket, and capable of digging a 47-ft. face; and the other being type 175B, weighing200 tons, having a 31-cub. yd. bucket, and capable of digging a 61-ft. face.In addition to these two steam shovels, the Commission has recently obtained a No. 250 Ruston electric revolving shovel weighing 340 tons, and having a bucket of 10 cub. yd. capacity, and capable of digging a 75-ft. face. When this electric shovel has been erected it will replace the steam shovels on the coal excavation, and the permanent transport system has been designed to take delivery of the coal from its bucket.The duty to be performed by the transport system is to take the coal from the shovels, elevate it out of the open cut, transport it to the screening house, deliver it iuto the hoppers at the top of this building, then to take the coal after it has passed over the screens and distribute the required grades to the power house and to the briquetting plant.

The National Lead Company operates its MacI tyre Development at Tahawus, New York for the production of ilmenite and. magnetite. The heavy ore of titanium and iron is mined from the open pit mine at an average rate of 7,000 tons per day, and the development waste is removed at an average rate of 10,000 tons per day. The mine working benches are spaced, at 35-foot vertical intervals, and 6 ½ inch blast holes are drilled 39-feet deep with 18-foot burden and spacing by down-the-hole drills. Waste is loaded with a 6 yeard shovel and ore with 2 ½ yard shovels into 22-ton rear dump trucks. A good account of the history of MacIntyre drilling and. blasting was presented to this assembly two years ago, by F. R. Jones. (1) Most of the blasting since the start of the mine in 1941 was done with 90% gelatin dynamite until 1955, when relatively insensitive canned blasting agents were adopted.. In 1956, 9-inch blast holes drilled with down-the-hole drills. In 1956, also, the first experimental trials of prilled ammonium nitrate fertilizer and fuel oil (hereafter called fertilizer) was made following the lead of Cleveland-Cliffs operations in the Hibbing district. Since that trial did not, as some local skeptics predicted, make grass grown on the bluff, but resulted in a well-broken shot, further tests were conducted in dry holes. I Observations of those tests indicated that the fertilizer did its share of the work. If anything, it produced better fragmentation than the normal load di in neighboring wet holes.

"Laboratory testing, plant optimization, and the interpretation and application of metallurgical technologies can be tedious, time consuming and costly. This paper outlines the use of proven statistical design of experimentation software for rapid laboratory testing and optimization of operating plants with limited representative sample utilization. This results in less costly required testing, a more thorough understanding of results and the ability to simultaneously optimize several variables and outcomes at once. At the Center for Advanced Mineral and Metallurgical Processing (CAMP), this testing methodology has been used successfully in many metallurgical development and plant optimization projects thereby confirming its real world utility and application. Accordingly, several applied examples in flotation and hydrometallurgy will be outlined in this paper. This will include flotation testing of a copper gold ore, flotation testing of a copper, cobalt and gold ore, optimization of an industrial hydrometallurgical jarosite circuit and optimization of industrial nitrogen species catalyzed pressure leaching of a copper enargite concentrate.INTRODUCTIONWhile flotation technology is now 100 years old, the testing, interpretation and application of lab results can be tedious, costly and time consuming requiring extensive sample collection and preparation. In addition, recent applications like hydrometallurgical pressure leaching and associated unit operations, such as precipitation, still remain more of an art than a quantifiable science. This paper will elucidate the application of STAT-EASE Design-Expert software to minimize required laboratory testing while rapidly optimizing multiple results and outcomes in a statistically valid manner. The STAT-EASE program is based on proven design of experiment fundamentals. In this paper, the real world application of this methodology for lab testing, plant optimization and process development will be elucidated."

Titania slag is used as feedstock in the production of titanium dioxide pigment. It (titania slag) is the product of ilmenite smelting,a process whereby ilmenite is reduced at high temperature utilizing anthracite as a reducing agent. Although various slag tapping configurations are employed throughout the ilmenite smelting industry, the method of tapping the slag from the furnace into bell shaped cast steel pots, was the subject of investigation in this study. The paper describes the formulation of a cooling model used to calculate and subsequently predict the temperature profile of a slagblock during its cooling within the various cooling environments of pot cooling, air cooling and water cooling. The model was calibrated against actual internal slag temperature measurements and verified with information obtained from both pilot and industrial scale blocks. The paper concludes with solidification results and their practical implication.

The Minera Yanacocha operation consists of several heaps interconnected with ponds and gold recovery plants and presents various operating challenges. A comprehensive process model has been developed in order to better understand the effects of certain operating parameters and inventory issues. An integral component of the process water/mass balance is a model of each heap that describes heap behavior based on the individual characteristics of the heap. The heap models are linked to a mass balancing program in order to track flows and concentrations throughout the circuit. A case study of the process heap model is presented for the La Quinua heap, including results for the normal base line operation and several operational problems such as loss of solution flow to the heap (i.e., pump failure), increased flow to a section of the heap (i.e., pond volume control), effect of significant rain events, and impact of a change in material properties (i.e., change in ore type). The impact on heap operating efficiency is discussed with regard to effects on recovery and gold solution grades.

This growing dependence of Canada upon foreign mineral commodities, just referred to, applies particularly in the direction of the United States. There is, in fact, no more significant feature of Canada's mineral trade than the manner in which it affects the Dominion's commercial standing with that country. Our heavy adverse balance of trade with the United States is perhaps not a matter of such wide concern or frequent comment as was the case two or three years ago. It is, of course, a well-known fact that the Dominion each year buys from the States a volume of goods to a value enormously in excess of our sales to that country. And it has come to be accepted as a ?normal, though not altogether satisfactory, feature of our international commerce that a huge portion of the bill incurred by our American purchases must be met, not by our American sales, but by the proceeds of our sales to other countries, not-ably Great Britain. It is a three-cornered situation in which our trading deficit with the United States is covered largely by our trading surplus with the United Kingdom. In this situation the mineral trade plays a remarkable part. If one delves into the details of our transactions with the United States it will be found that, in one sense, the mineral trade is entirely responsible for the huge annual balance against the Dominion. In fact, Canada gets decidedly better than an even break on Canadian American trade, if one leaves out of account the three mineral groups, "iron and steel", "non- metallic minerals", and "non-ferrous metals".
