This section of the Minerals Yearbook reviews the minerals industries of 27 countries: the 12 nations of the European Community (Belgium, Dermark/Greenland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and the United Kingdom); 6 of the 7 nations of the European Free Trade Association (Austria, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Sweden); Malta; the 8 Eastern European economies in transition (Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Yugoslavia); and the U.S.S.R. Western Europe Western Europe [loosely defined to include the 12 nations of the European Community (EC) and the 7 nations of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA)] is the single largest trading area and consumer of raw materials in the world. If Western Europe was at one time an important mining sector, it has now increasingly relegated the role of supplying minerals for its minerals processing industry to the more minerally endowed countries in North and South America, Africa, and Australia. In this regard, Western Europe is the most important determinant of raw materials consumption (and thus, indirectly, raw materials production). Western Europe has significant reserves of industrial minerals but has limited availability of metalliferous raw materials. It, therefore, imports significant quantities of the latter and ranks along with the United States and the U.S.S.R. in the production of refined metals. Nonetheless, there is an inherent tendency to underestimate the importance of Western Europe in the world of minerals, both as a minerals processor and raw materials buyer. The reason for this is that Western Europe is generally thought of on the basis of individual nations rather than as a whole. Viewed in this limited context, the United States, the U.S.S.R., and Japan appear to dominate the world economy. Viewed as one regional area, however, Western Europe includes the fourth (FRG), fifth (France), sixth (United Kingdom) and seventh (Italy) largest economies of the world, all bordering on one another. With the remaining 15 EC and EFTA countries, Western Europe has a land area approximately 40 % of that of the United States, exceeds the U.S. population by 50 % and has a gross domestic product about the same as that of the United States.

Introduction In preparing this paper considerable time was spent attempting to find some upbeat data about the mining industry, so those of us in the field could feel somewhat better about future prospects. Much to my regret, I failed to uncover substantial evidence that our near-term or, for that matter, our long-term opportunities appear all that bright in North America. That is certainly not the kind of assessment anyone likes to hear or accept as even a possibility. Those remarks may, on the surface, appear far too pessimistic. This industry will experience a recovery and most likely will see conditions begin to improve later this year or early next. The kind and degree of recovery, however, will more than likely differ from those experienced in the past. Fundamental Changes Clearly, the fundamentals on a world scale of our business have undergone important changes. In recognizing these fundamental changes, mining authorities believe productivity advances are needed to change the direction mining has taken in recent years. The really tough question is whether increases in productivity will be enough to change the course of events that has dominated the mining sector for the past decade. Before one can provide an honest answer, an appraisal of what has and is happening now is necessary. Here are some changes and events that have taken place that effect domestic mining and will probably continue: • Mineral-rich lesser developed countries (LDCs) in Africa, South America, and Asia-Pacific have reached a point where they have developed the needed mining infrastructure to not only produce at a high rate, but in many instances, at a lower cost than fully developed countries. Just as importantly, these countries, even if they do not enjoy lower costs, will produce for world export with government subsidies because min¬ing products are key in obtaining badly needed foreign exchange. • These producing countries also have the distance advantage of lower labor, environmental, and other important regulatory costs. If that were not enough, these same countries have minerals with considerably higher grade ore and, in some cases, much lower cost accessibility. • Exporting North American commodities is impaired by a dollar that continues to strengthen against other important currencies around the world. There are other impediments to overcome, but these represent some of the realities our industry faces. Can those obstacles be overcome through improving productivity? In the past, this industry has offset the impact of these events to a sizeable degree through innovations of mining techniques, equipment and processes, and by increasing the size of its individual operations to reduce costs. Will further enhancements along these lines be enough to alter this changing balance in the future? While there is no answer, it is apparent that if we do not mount a full-scale assault in some key areas, our prospects will not be encouraging. Productivity improvements throughout the entire chain of the mining industry most certainly rates as a high priority. Every link in that chain from mine planning, equipment selections, and transportation considerations needs to be examined and reexamined to assure the lowest effective cost is developed. Quality, while oftentimes costing a little more initially, is still the most cost effective purchasing decision to make. Regulations Another area of concern is regulations, be they environmental or those that dictate what must or must not be done in running our business. "According to Darcy’s equation, the rate of dewatering varies as inverse square of the surface area of the particles to be dewatered and is proportional to the pressure drop across a filter cake. Thus, the difficulty in dewatering fine mineral concentrates can be overcome by using high-pressure filters. When treating ultrafine particles, however, it is often necessary to further dewater the filter cake using a thermal dryer. In the present work, novel dewatering aids that can reduce the pressure requirement have been developed. The reagents are designed to reduce surface tension, increase particle hydrophobicity and increase capillary radius, all at the same time. They were tested for dewatering mineral and coal concentrates in both laboratory and pilot-scale tests. The results show that the use of the novel dewatering aids can substantially reduce cake moistures and, at the same time, increase throughput. In this communication, the case history of using the reagents commercially at the Garpenberg concentrator is given. The use of the novel dewatering aids allowed the operators to use a vacuum filter to obtain desired cake moistures and obviate the need to use a thermal dryer.INTRODUCTIONDewatering is an integral part of mineral and coal processing operations, as it is necessary to remove water from concentrates (or clean coal) to minimize shipping costs, meet contract specifications, and recycle the process water. In general, the cost of dewatering increases with decreasing particle size, which can be attributed to the difficulty in removing the water trapped in the pores (or capillaries) formed between the particles constituting a filter cake.The various parameters affecting the process of dewatering, including the effect of particle size, can be understood in view of Darcy’s equation (Darcy, 1856):"

Knowledge of the behaviour of flotation machines had developed and increased considerably over the last few years. Although much work remains to be done on the study of the fundamental processes that influence the collection of hydrophobic particles at an air-water interface, there is enough information to permit the building of realistic models of the gross flotation behaviour of various ores. These models serve as an ideal base for the development of simulation techniques for the steady-state behaviour of entire flotation plants that consist of a large number of individual flotation machines. Simulation techniques have a very real role to play in assisting with the design of new plants and in improving the operation of exisiting plants. Recently, highly efficient data-logging systems have been introduced on flotation plants. These systems are based on the on-line measurement of volumetric flowrate, pulp densities, and metal contents, and they generate enormous quantities of information regarding the operation of the plant. Unfortunately, this information is largely wasted at the present time because efficient data-reduction techniques, although available10 are not in common use. Simulation techniques play a central role in such data reduction because they form the essential link between the fundamental kinetic flotation processes on the one hand and the plant data on the other.

"A ball charge dynamics model is presented. Simulation results are compared with observed data showing good correlation. Based on the charge dynamics models, a liner wear model is presented along with some wear simulation results. Using the charge dynamics model with the liner wear model, it is possible to envision the predictions of mill power consumption as a function of liner wear. Further work is needed to validate the liner wear model.IntroductionFrom a process control point of view, industrial systems can be considered stationary or non-stationary. For example, the physical properties, such as geometric and/or material, of a system considered stationary do not change with time. However, this is not true for non-stationary systems such as those found in the mining industry where process dynamics are often violent with wear being an intrinsic process phenomenon.In this paper, a model for ball charge dynamics will be presented along with a description for liner wear. Simulation results for power draft prediction using the charge model will be compared with observed data. Further, liner wear results will also be presented."

In 2005, a total of 4,490 stone mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Stone mines comprised 30.6% of all mining operations. ? Mines producing the primary commodity of limestone (crushed and broken) comprised the largest number of operations (n=2,039; 45.4%). ? Stone mining operations were located in all states and territories except Delaware and North Dakota. ? Of all states, Pennsylvania had the most stone mines (n=379; 8.4%).

Rock mass response in blasting is an important element to determine the performance of a blast along with its other outcomes. The near-field monitoring for rock mass response analysis is vital for determining the behaviour of a blast; however, due to costly and cumbersome methods involved in such measurements the subject has received scant attention so far and the publications on this account are perfunctory in nature. This paper presents a non-destructive method to monitor the blast-induced pressure in the rock mass at a distance from a blasthole. The methodology of monitoring and a few examples of actual field monitoring are detailed in this paper. The responses of the rock in the near-field of a blasthole under dynamic loading have been documented to predict fragmentation and throw. The proposed method has also been used in limited cases earlier by the author to predict flyrock using a semi-empirical method and trajectory equation. The pros and cons of the method are discussed while throwing light on the actual response and the prediction of fragmentation and throw of blasted rock.CITATION:Raina, A K and Murthy, V M S R, 2015. "Over 50 mln.tonne is the average annual output of oxidized ferruginous quartzites typically containing Fe38-42% mined in Mikhailovskoye ore field. The most promising and cost-effective way to expand concentrate production maintaining current output of magnetite is processing of oxidized ferruginous quartzites (hereinafter referred to as OFQ) mined as a by-product in Mikhailovsky open pit mine. However lack of proven and efficient concentration and agglomeration process applicable to OFQ and insufficient data for feasibility evaluation of OFQ processing encumbered full-scale addressing of this challenge. Based on outcomes of multiple various studies a process of OFQ flotation was designed by MC Metalloinvest LLC and PJSC Mikhailovsky GOK engineers. Comparative lab-scale testwork have proven performance and production advantages of flotation against magnetic separation feat. flotation and combined concentration method. Lab-scale flotation enabled production of concentrate with average Fe66.6% and SiO22.06% grade. Geologic and production contouring of OFQ deposited in Mikhailovskoye ore field has been carried out to collect necessary data for feasibility study incl. cost and profit estimation. As a result processing and production properties of over 3,500 samples have been analyzed which is characteristic of every direction and level of prospective ore mining within Mikhailovskoye ore field up to year 2032. Following work has been done based on geologic and production contouring of OFQ: – natural typification of ores and production (processing) grades of OFQ, determination of average mineral composition; – correlation analysis of interrelation between OFQ mineral composition and processing features thereof for overall bulk of samples as well as for individual data blocks related to various directions of open pit mine; – OFQ classification with account of defined mineral composition and processing features. Total Fe weight content in chamber product of flotation (known as concentrating ability in flotation) was applied as a major differentiating factor for processing grade classification of OFQ. Three processing grades of oxidized ferruginous quartzites were established as a result of flotation tests run to determine concentrating ability, i.e. – hard concentrated OFQ (TO) – below Fe65%; – mean concentrated OFQ (SO) – Fe65-67%; – easy concentrated OFQ (LO) – over Fe67%. Outcome of this work provided initial data for feasibility study and cost-profit evaluation of medium-term industrial-scale processing of OFQ deposited in Mikhailovskoye ore field."

A DESCRIPTION of the block-caving system of mining as practised at the King mine of Asbestos Corporation, Limited, Thetford Mines, Que., was presented. at the Annual Meeting of the Institute held in Quebec city, in April, 1934. The paper was published in the Transactions of the Institute for 1934. There has now been recovered, by this method, one million tons of ore, and a review of experience indicates that the method was well planned and has been executed smoothly. In approaching the problem of selecting the type of mining best adapted to this deposit, the method had to be one which would be low in cost, use no wood, and not disturb the surface immediately bounding the ore-body on two sides. Prior to 1931, block-caving had been considered but rejected, as it en-tailed disturbance of the surface area which lay within a 45° angle of the lowest contemplated workings, if the practice of such mines as Ray, Miami, Inspiration, and Morency, where this type of mining has been used extensively, was followed. At these properties there have been mined large tannages at outstanding low costs, but an extensive surface area has been disturbed in each case. In some instances, townsites in the mining area have had to be abandoned, and dwellings, not considered worth moving, have been allowed to fall into the depression. A study was made of the principles involved in the various types of block-caving, the existing information on ground movement, subsidence, etc., also being carefully analysed. Toward the end of 1931, a plan was conceived whereby the country adjoining ground being caved might be held permanently in place and undisturbed. The success of such a scheme was essential to the application of block-caving at the King mine on account of property boundaries, the Quebec Central Railway right-of-way, and expense of moving buildings. Study of existing data on caving and movement of rock, caused by sub-surface excavations of sufficient unsupported area to result in failure of the backs, indicated, in practically every instance, that such movements followed certain definite laws of mechanics.

"Increasing attention to subway tunnel maintenance is being paid with the high speed development of urban rail transit system in China. A novel moving tunnel inspection equipment based on machine vision is developed in this paper. High resolution image acquisition system is proposed for tunnel crack and leakage inspection. The main components of this image acquisition system includes high speed CCD cameras, linear lights and high performance computer. To inspect the crack less than 0.3mm with a 3-5km/h speed in subway tunnel, we need to consider resolution and line rate of camera, pixels of cameras, range of inspection and illumination intensity of lights simultaneously. The optimization design is proposed to make the equipment more convenient for tunnel use. Entire tunnel situation can be detected and recorded in a single inspection process. This equipment has already been verified in Shanghai subway tunnel for defects inspection.1. INTRODUCTION In China, the quantity of subway tunnel has reached a large scale in recent years. Until 2014, there had been more than 2300km of subway tunnel in China which accounted for nearly three quarters of Chinese urban railway system (Zhang Chen,2015). In some metropolises like Beijing and Shanghai, most of the metro tunnels has already run over 20 years which within maintenance phase. This has brought about plenty of inspection work and maintenance work to guarantee the tunnel under the serviceability limit states. Geologic resource assessments describe the location, general characteristics, and estimated volumes of resources, whether in-situ or technically recoverable. Such compilations are only an initial step in economic resource evaluation. Forecasts that assume that resources that exist in nature can be commercially produced as needed ignore economic constraints. This paper identifies, by example, the salient features of a geologic assessment that will assure its usefulness for economic analysis. These features are demonstrated with examples of coal resource assessments and coal bed gas assessments.

The kinetic and practical aspects of the extraction of copper from copper-rich solutions by cementation on iron was investigated. Tests were made on the effect of stirring speed, cupric sulphate concentration, acid concentration, temperature, and ferric sulphate concentration on the reaction rate and excess iron consumption.Most kinetic investigations were conducted under a nitrogen atmosphere to prevent any oxidation of the iron or copper metals. The stirring mechanism for all tests incorporated the use of a rotating impeller above a static disc in the solution. The activation energy for cementation on the steel disc at high stirring speed was 8·6 kcal/mole, indicating a predominant chemical control.Increasing the pH first decreased, then above pH 3, increased the reaction rate. Additions of sodium sulphate also significantly increased the reaction rate.The use of high temperature and high pH under an inert atmosphere has been suggested for increasing the reaction rate and producing a high purity sponge copper product.

A challenging earth retention project presented itself in Washington, DC in the backyard of the historic House of the Temple (The Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Supreme Council 33°). Located at 15th St NW and S St NW, a forty-foot-deep underground basement was to be installed adjacent to the existing Temple, a historic Carriage House structure dating back to the 1800’s and across a narrow alley from a four-story brick apartment building. The unique geology of the site included typical urban fill overlying a mixture of loose alluvial soils underlaid by dense marine deposits of the Potomac Formation. The clay, sand and gravel of the Potomac included nested boulders up to three feet in diameter. Design of the earth retention system accounted for ground conditions, installation methods and estimated movement of the system and adjacent structures. Anticipated ground water and unanticipated water from leaky sewers also proved obstacles to overcome during construction. Soldier beams were installed using a variable momentvibratory hammer to minimize disturbance to the historic and sensitive structures. Monitoring of the existing structures included both seismograph and optical targets during installation of soldier beams and as the excavation progressed. Micropiles drilled into the Potomac Formation were a part of the permanent foundation for the new structure. This local case history will delve into the details of the successful design, installation, and performance of an earth retention system and micropiles in a historic and highly congested urban environment.

"The cement deep mixing (CDM) method has a wide range of applications, both on land and at sea. This paper describes the features of the equipment on CDM vessels engaged in maritime construction in Japan: the DCM No. 3 barge, the DCM No. 6 barge, and the DCM No. 8 barge. The DCM No. 3 barge is a large vessel with a mixing area of 5.7 m2. The design of the elevator of the deep mixing unit on the DCM No.3 barge enables us to conduct deep underground/ sea operations. This enables us to conduct mixing at depths of up to 52.6 m below the seabed and up to 70.5 m from the water surface. Additionally, since the tower is installed on the center of the barge, it has excellent stability. The DCM No. 6 barge and DCM No. 8 barge are mid-sized vessels with a mixing area of 4.6 m2. The DCM No. 6 barge was fitted in 2013 with energy conservation equipment and upgraded to an environment-friendly CDM barge. The energy saving upgrade used electric power, instead of hydraulic power, by inverter controlled alternating current motor for both mixing unit and main hoisting winch. This enables the using on effective use of regenerative power when the deep mixing unit is lowered. A feature of the DCM No. 8 barge is that it has an inclinable tower located at the bow section for elevating the deep cement mixing unit. Since the tower can be greatly inclined, the hull has a lower center of gravity and greater stability when the vessel turns. This also allows the vessel to pass below bridges and simplifies cruise preparations, outfitting and dismantling work.INTRODUCTIONThe cement deep mixing method (CDM method) involves mixing and stirring a cement-based solidifier into soft ground to rapidly bring the ground to the desired firmness. This method is used to suppress ground shear deformation, increase strength, increase slip resistance, and mitigate liquefaction and subsidence. It has been recently used in Japan in the construction of revetments at controlled waste disposal sites, both to boost the strength of the seabed and to prevent the seepage of waste matter and other pollutants. Undertaking CDM construction work at sea requires specially constructed marine construction CDM vessels. Since CDM construction at sea entails many more restrictions on working conditions than construction on land, the vessels themselves sometimes need to be modified. This paper will describe 1) the remodeling of the turrets and mixing machinery for mixing to great depths in deep water (DCM No. 3 barge with eight axes); 2) the upgraded of equipment on board CDM vessels after accounting for environmental considerations (DCM No. 6 barge with four axes); and 3) the use of a inclinable tower (DCM No. 8 barge with four axes)."

This report, sponsored by the Bureau of Mines, presents the results of an examination of the safety of the Blind Shaft Borer (BSB) shaft sinking system and an alternative modified BSB design concept in comparison to conventional shaft sinking technology. Detailed study of the two systems was also performed to identify and recommend design changes for optimum safety conditions. A comparison of the BSB systems with conventional shaft sinking was made on the basis of relative risk levels. Risk incorporates both the frequency and the potential consequence of accidents. A safety evaluation of the component operations of the two BSB systems was performed using a Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) methodology. The results of this analysis show generally that both BSS systems are safer than conventional shaft sinking. The potential risk of conventional shaft sinking operations could be reduced by over 30%, on the average, with the use of the original BSB system, and by an average of about 10% with the modified BSB. Design change recommendations to further improve the safety of these systems include a better fire suppression system, improved man haulage systems and more compact hydraulics. An operational safety manual was also developed for the modified BSB system.

We consider the Grubbs estimation of the precision of an online gauge. Typically, this type of estimation involves independent results from two or more reference instruments (sampling and laboratory analysis operations). The properties of the estimator are then independent of the product variability. However, the use of more than one reference instrument entails significant additional costs. The two-instrument Grubbs estimator, which is based on results from a gauge and a single reference instrument, has the disadvantage that its standard error is heavily dependent on the degree of product variability. We propose a new estimator that has a variance that is more or less independent of product variability. In fact, the variance is typically less than that of the Grubbs estimator based on the use of two reference instruments. In order to function successfully, our methodology requires some prior knowledge of the extent of product variability and of gauge precision. In practice, such prior knowledge is often available and it is a weakness of the traditional two - and three-instrument Grubbs methods that no use is made of such knowledge. The efficacy and robustness of the new method is illustrated by Monte Carlo simulation.

Paper presented at the conference Economic geology in Europe and beyond II, models for mineral deposits in sedimentary basins, held in Keyworth, UK, 13-14 April 1994. A model is presented which regards the Lower Talnakh- and Talnakh-type intrusions as part of the plumbing system for the overlying lavas. As magma ascended along the Noril'sk-Kharayelakh fault it was forced to spread out within sedimentary strata immediately beneath the obstruction of the accumulated volcanic sequence. Here it was severely depleted in chalcophile elements by sulphides, which were then trapped by their high density and remained behind in the main arteries to form the central, elongated zone of maximum thickness. Subsequent magma also lost Ni, Cu and PGE to the sulphides as it flowed through. The Lower Talnakh-type intrusions represent part of the plumbing system that became blocked at an early stage, before the influx of much mokulaevsky-type magma rich in chalcophile elements. The model accounts for the high metal content of the ores in comparison with the size of their associated intrusions, the extensive metamorphic aureoles, the chalcophile depletion of some overlying volcanic suites, the presence of the ore in near-surface intrusions rather than deep magma chambers, and the sulphur isotopic composition of the ore

Having obviously cleared the way for fast confirmation by the Senate Interior Committee, the Administration recently named Elburt F. Osborn, vice president of Penn State University, as director of the Bureau of Mines. Interior Committee Chairman Henry M. Jackson (D of Wash.) has moved hearings on the nomination right along, forecasting that they will end in a confirmation. Dr. Osborn not only made a good impression on the Committee, he also made it amply clear that he would be the boss of his job and have right-hand aides to help straighten out conflicts stemming from recently enacted health and safety regulations for miners. Mining engineers in the field hope this clarification can come soon. They are frankly fed up with local, state, regional and national overlapping of restrictions.

As tunnel boring machine technology has expanded, so has its range of application. Tunneling machines (TBM's) are tackling tasks today that fifteen years ago were considered "inappropriate". A case in point is incline/decline TBM boring. An incline or decline bore presents peculiar design considerations that differentiate it from a horizontal bore. This paper reviews those design considerations as they apply to TBM's, backup, muck handling and other tunneling subsystems. In addition, several abbreviated case studies are presented. By the review of real life tunneling techniques as well as design considerations, the "appropriateness" of TBM incline/ decline boring today becomes apparent. INCLINE Introduction In contemplating the impact of incline versus horizontal tunnel boring system design, the obvious consideration is gravity. Up-hill boring can be quite different than horizontal boring. Muck, water and machine weight all tend to slide down the incline. In addition, hydraulic and lubrication systems if unaltered, will find their fluids pooled in the lower corners contentedly ignoring such higher elevation items as gears and bearings.
