The safe and optimal installation of roof support remains one of the biggest challenges in underground mining today. Traditional hand-held, roofbolt installation in conventional mining has been replaced, in a lot of mining operations, by mechanized equipment. This was a first step to moving the operators out of the unsafe working environment and a start on the trend toward a changed support regime in mechanized mining. However, the challenge of handling of the drill steel itself, as well as inserting resin cartridges and bolts, remains a major hazard and the cause of many lost-time injuries. The paper describes and discusses developments in this area, of mechanized bolting and on-board automation, presenting solutions to known problems, achievements to date, and future developments. The solutions presented will identify with addressing customer needs while touching on possibilities for further technology changes, keeping focus on the safety aspect for operators and the need to bring the operators even further away from the unsafe working environment. The-state-of-the-art technology in mechanized bolting equipment is presented and a brief outlook on the past, current, and future developments is given.

During the course of evaluations by the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s Roof Control Division, the controls on ground instability were investigated at surface and underground limestone mines throughout the eastern and southern United States. Structural geologic features, including joints and faults, were identified by basic geologic mapping as primary controls on highwall and back instability in surface and underground limestone mines. By comparing the spatial orientation of discontinuities and internal angle of friction with the orientation of highwalls on a stereonet, the potential for sliding, toppling, and raveling failures was evaluated in a semi-quantitative fashion. Structural geologic mapping identified faults and joints, which dismembered the back and were associated with ground instability, in underground mines. This paper documents the importance of recognizing structural geologic controls on ground stability in limestone mines, advocates basic geologic mapping as a critical component of ground control programs at surface and underground limestone mines, and provides examples of simple stability evaluations using the stereonet method.

The introductory paper1 of this series described the potential behavior of tin in sodium carbonate and bicarbonate solutions whose pH ranged from 8.4 to 11.2 and demonstrated that significant and reproducible results could be obtained by proper attention to experimental technique. In examining the corrosion of tin under such conditions, it is desirable to know the effects of anions, aside from carbonate, that are likely to be present in commercial materials packaged in tin. Therefore, in this paper the potential behavior of tin in carbonate solutions to which sodium fluoride, chloride, bromide, iodide, sulphate, nitrate, monobasic phos-phate, dichromate, perborate and acetate have been added will be dcscribed. For most of the additions, solutions containing 0.001 and 0.01 moles of the added material were studied. "In order to prevent corner cracks on cast steel slab and bloom, solidification delay at the corners should be controlled at the proper level. For this purpose, controlling the heat flux from the molten steel to the solidified shell at corners is essential. In this paper, optimization of the submerged nozzle was studied based on flow and solidification analysis.First, for the slab caster, the submerged nozzle shape was optimized. The improved nozzle was tested in actual casting and completely succeeded in preventing corner cracks. It was clearly demonstrated that the solidification delay and the corner cracks were strongly affected by the spouting stream from the submerged nozzle.For the bloom caster, on the other hand, the setting angle of the nozzle was optimized. Numerical simulations demonstrated that the spouting stream from the nozzle causes solidification delay, impinging at the corners under electromagnetic stirring conditions. Optimization of the setting angle of the nozzle is a possible means to reduce the solidification delay at the corners for the bloom caster.Related to the numerical analysis of flow and solidification, the effect of the critical solid fraction at the tip of the dendrite structure on the solidification under electromagnetic stirring conditions was studied."

This is the problem of the reorganization of the Federal Government. The, inadequacy, the wastefulness, and the inefficiency of our federal organization was evident, enough under pre-war conditions. These inadequacies, these inefficiencies, these wastes were exhibited to the country during the war at the cost of millions. Congress has placed the problem in the hands of a very able Congressional Joint Committee, but if this Joint Committee succeeds in securing the imminently necessary results it will only be by full insistent support to it by public opinion. Many attempts have been made at reorganization before but all, of them have gone to the same crematory-the interminable differences in opinion among the executive and legislative officials over details.

"In order to conserve the coal resources, many coal mines which have been mined begin to re-mine. Re-mining face is of complicated circumstances and coal spontaneous combustion is unknown, so experiments are designed to study the characteristics of multiple oxidized coal samples. The investigation into the oxidation of coal is conducive to the safe mining of the coal seam groups and thick coal seams. The non-caking coal is collected as coal samples. The raw coal sample with initial oxidation and the sample after second oxidation and third oxidation are obtained after a certain treatment of the coal. The temperature-programmed system, and proximate and ultimate analysis are adopted to compare the releases of gaseous products of spontaneous combustion characteristic parameters of the multiple oxidized coal sample. With the increase of oxidation times, experimental results indicate that the oxygen consumption rate, the release rate of carbon monoxide and the intensity of heat release are significantly decrease. The characteristic temperature dropped and the size of the pores in coal is smaller as well. INTRODUCTION China accounts for 13% of global coal resources [1-2]. In recent years, more and more coal mines begin to re-mine in order to conserve resources. This production mode is to mine coal pillar left by last exploitation or unavailable for mining. In the process of slicing mining for coal seam groups or thick coal seams, the second or multiple oxidation due to the mining-induced effect, may take place in the goaf of the lower seam. So the spontaneous combustion is prone to occur in this area. The study on oxidation of coal is conducive to the safe mining of the coal seam groups and thick coal seams. Scholars [3-7] have discussed the workability of re-mining for coal mines, verify the feasibility of the existing mining technology for re-mining area, and set up the prevention measures of coal spontaneous combustion. But all these measures are only based on on-site observation data, instead of experiment on spontaneous combustion characteristic parameters of re-mining coal samples which have a great importance for early prediction and forecast. The authors aim at investigating the multiple-oxidated coal spontaneous combustion law, and perfecting the coal spontaneous combustion mechanism to provide a basis for the prediction and forecast."

A strategy for prioritizing mining health and safety research by evaluating the potential for risk reduction through interventions is proposed. Mining has one of the highest incidence rates of injury and disease found in major industries. The main premise of this paper is that often the best opportunities to reduce these rates are not revealed by retrospective analysis of injury and illness data. Instead, a proactive approach is needed that accounts for risks to specific hazards that can be abated by engineering or behavioral interventions. The process proposed here begins with development of prospective interventions. The degree of reduction in risk to be expected from an intervention then is determined from statistics on the mining worker population, the expected degree of success of the intervention, and the expected change in the severity of injuries resulting from the intervention. Three disparate mining health and safety concerns are presented to demonstrate common problems in assessing risks of injury and illness and describe additional data needs. Information on events preceding injuries and illnesses and more detailed demographic data on the mining work force are needed to analyze injury and illness data more precisely. Detailed information on exposure to specific hazards is necessary to evaluate the potential for an intervention to reduce risk of injury or illness.

The waste acid mixture whose main component is phosphoric acid, is discharged from the etching process in the liquid crystal production industry. In order to separate impurity acids from the phosphoric acid, trioctyl phosphate (TOP) is used as an extractant. TOP can extract acetic and nitric acids selectivity. The extraction and stripping operations are carried out for the acid mixture by beaker-scale experiments and countercurrent multistage operations with mixer-settler equipment. TOP selectively extracts the acetic and nitric acids in the acid mixture. From the results of the McCabe-Thiele analysis obtained by beaker-scale tests, the extraction for acetic and nitric acids are approximately 100%, respectively, by 6-stage extraction with a phase ratio (A/O) of 0.4. On the other hand, almost all of acetic and nitric acids are stripped with water from the organic phase by 4-stage stripping with a phase ratio (A/O) of 1.0. About 95% of acetic and 98% of nitric acids can be removed from the acid mixture without extracting phosphoric acid in case of the mixer-settler equipment operation. There are several steps such as slicing, lapping, chemical etching and mechanical polishing in the silicon wafer production process. The chemical etching step is necessary to remove any damaged layer caused in the slicing and lapping steps. The typical etching liquor is the acid mixture comprising nitric acid, acetic acid and hydrofluoric acid. The waste acid is treated by a neutralization method with a high alkali cost and balky solid residue. A solvent extraction method is applicable to separate and recover each acid. Acetic acid is first separated from the waste liquor using 2-ethlyhexyl alcohols as an extractant. Then, nitric acid is recovered using TBP (Tri-butyl phosphate). Finally hydrofluoric acid is separated with TBP solvent extraction. The expected recovered acids in this process are 2mol/L acetic acid, 6mol/L nitric acid and 6mol/L hydrofluoric acid. The yields of this process are almost 100% for acetic acid and nitric acid. On the other hand, it is important to recover and reuse the metal values contained in various industrial wastes from a viewpoint of environmental preservation. Most industrial products are made through processes to separate impurities in raw materials, solid and liquid wastes being necessarily discharged as industrial wastes. Chemical methods such as solvent extraction, ion exchange and membrane separation, and physical methods such as heavy media separation, magnetic separation and electrostatic separation are considered as the methods for separation and recovery of the metal values from the wastes. Some examples of the application of solvent extraction to the treatment of wastes such as Ni-Co alloy scrap, Sm-Co alloy scrap, fly ash and flue dust, and liquid wastes such as plating solution, the rinse solution, etching solution and pickling solution are introduced.

The covering of a hydraulically filled goethite pond is discussed from a geotechnical point of view. The characteristics of the goethite were defined in order to allow a detailed study of the procedure for the construction of the cover on top of the soft material and a verification of the stability of the cover and side slopes after construction. These characteristics and the main results of the studies are given, as well as the experiences and observations made during the execution of the work. Finally, the monitoring plan, during and after construction, is also discussed and some results are given. The 'Design and Construct' contract form was used to allow the contractor to choose the optimum and most economical method to realize the closing of the pond, based on his experience with similar projects. The works were carried out between mid 2003 and the end of 2004. The paper will, amongst others, discuss the special method of working that had to be developed to allow the covering of the whole pond in a relatively short time period, without soil improvement methods such as vertical drains or stabilization by in situ treatment. Fill material was used to establish a platform on top of the soft material so that the cover liner and finishing layer could be installed on top of the fill layer. The 'floating roof' principle was used; subsidences were allowed to occur during the installation of the impermeable top liner and soil cover.

Tamano Smelter of Hibi Kyodo Smelting Co., Ltd. has been operating with one Flash Furnace (FSFE) and three Peirce-Smith Converters since its start-up in 1972. Anode production capacity has increased from 101,000 to 263,000 t/y by the several expansion programs, while converter capacity has increased and stable operation has been established by several improvements as listed below. - Expanding the furnace body (length) - Development of two kinds of automatic scrap charging system for each converter. "The roasting characteristics of hematite pellets containing MgO were studied where magnesia powder, serpentine and magnesite were used as magnesium-additives respectively. The mechanical strength of both preheated and roasted pellets decreased when MgO content increased, which implied the addition of MgO had an adverse effect on pellet consolidation. By adding flux containing CaO, the mechanical strength of both preheated and roasted pellets were improved. The addition of calcium flux facilitated the formation of calcium ferrite and provided a certain amount of liquid phase, resulting in faster diffusion ofMg2+ and Fe3+. The result showed that diffusing speed of Mg2+ was enhanced by 1.48 times, and rate constant of Fe203 crystalline growth was enhanced by 62% when basicity was around 0.4. Improvement of mineralization degree and recrystallization of Fe203 assisted in consolidation of hematite pellets containing MgO.IntroductionOxidized pellets are ideal iron-bearing burdens in blast furnace. At present, magnetite is the main raw material for oxidized pellet production in China. However, as the rapid development of iron and steel industry, resources of magnetite have been depleted and cannot satisfy the requirement of pellet production. Using hematite concentrates to produce oxidized pellets has become a trend [1, 2]. Many pellet enterprises abroad nowadays have adopted high proportions of hematite concentrates when producing oxidized pellets, e.g. the percentage is 100% in a lot of Brazilian factories [3, 4]. But high proportion of hematite concentrates will lead to low mechanical strength and high reduction swelling index of pellets. Some studies show that Mg-bearing pellets have excellent metallurgical properties, and the reduction swelling phenomenon can be solved by adding fluxes containing MgO [5, 7]. However, there are problems such as low pellet strength and bad roasting characteristics for MgO-bearing pellets, which remains an obstacle in pellet industry. Hence, it's vital to undertake the study on strengthening measures for indurations of Mg-bearing hematite pellets."

On the basis of detailed studying of mineral structure of ore and treatment products it is established that the given ore refers to oxidized Pb-Zn vein-disseminated ores. Technological special features of the basic ore minerals and the reasons causing their obstinateness that is defined by following features are revealed, presence at dominating quantity difficult to float lead minerals: mimetesite (9.67%), green lead ore(0.48%); non float: bindheimite (2.16%) and plumbojarosite (0.36%) and high assay of oxides and hydrous ferric oxides; also thin, emulsive and submicroscopic segregations of the defined minerals in swamp ore. As a result of researches the scheme of gravitational-flotation treatment was conducted in semi-industrial scale. It allows to receive two concentrates from ore: a lead gravitational concentrate of mark ??-4 with the assay of 55.5 % of Pb and 0.77 % of Zn; and a Pb concentrate of mark ??-7 with assay of Pb of 40.97 % and Zn of 1.39 %. The total assay of Pb in concentrates makes 81 %. The efficiency offered by gravitational-flotation schemes is defined by possibility for recovery of big impregnated lead minerals under gravitation. The use of this method of gravitation has allowed to recover such mineral as beudantide and to exclude irrevocable losses of lead in tails which are connected with this mineral. Scientific value of the presented researches is connected with the fact the problem of extraction of the oxidized minerals of Bb and Zn is rather difficult and insufficiently studied. THE year 1935 is noteworthy for the superior legislative measures passed by several states. Sincere efforts have been made to establish equity between the various producing tracts in oil and gas fields. Outstanding legislative measures include the New Mexico law, known as Senate Bill No. 79, approved on Feb. 23; the Oklahoma law on April 22; the Texas law on April 30; and the Kansas law, which became effective July 1. Primarily designed to prevent waste, but more or less the direct out- growth of the current excess of potential oil and gas production, these statutes fall in the class of "Proration Laws."

"A 400 MW, gas-fed power plant on floating piles and piled raft foundations was constructed in the Province of Moskovskaya, Russia in 2008. The subsurface is characterized by fill underlain by loose to medium dense alluvial deposits, with peat and clay interbeds, a stiff to hard, highly plastic, silty clay stratum of glacial origin, and a stratum of very dense, varved interbeds of sand and silt.More than 800, drilled concrete piles were constructed at the site. The pile length ranged from 15 to 23 meters below existing surface grade, and the pile diameter ranged from 0.9 to 1 meter.Initial analyses by others predicted total power plant settlements of 3 to 4 cm when subjected to the permanent loading conditions. Under a peer review process for the equipment supplier, subsurface investigation and testing were performed to verify the consolidation parameters used for foundation design of the power plant foundation. The parameters obtained in this investigation were used in the 3-D finite-element model ELPLA as inputs for the settlement analysis of the turbine building and power island. The ELPA analyses predicted settlements on the order of 7 cm over a period of 30 years. The actual settlements after two years of monitoring were compared against the model predictions. The rate of settlement and the recompression index were both underestimated in our model. THERE have been eight different oil zones identified and produced at Santa Fe Springs, of which three or four are in turn divided into two or three parts. These zones are, from top to bottom, the Foix, difference of opinion over this nomenclature, with reference to the different zones referred to as Clark, it has no particular bearing on the water problems. Each of these oil zones has had waters of varying salinity associated with it, either within or at the bottom of the 'zone. Table 1 is a tabulation of the zones, their maximum thicknesses, salinity and heads of various waters. Surface waters are fresh, and of high head, giving artesian flow in some instances.

It has been 2-1/2 years since the Congress passed the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (PL95-87) the Office of Surface Mining every deadline specified in the Act. Hopefully the Congress will begin to realize that specifying unrealistic deadlines does not accomplish the end desire of legislation any sooner -- it only adds to the confusion, and actually hinders orderly, efficient progress. OSM has been sued by all categories of involved parties -- environmental activitist organizations, the states, and the coal operators. This situation has resulted for two reasons: (1) insufficient time was allotted by the Congress to properly develop the regulations and program, and (2) OSM?s philosophy that it must dictate every detail of reclamation operations from Washington, even though many of its people are inexperienced with coal mining. These law- suits are now demonstrating their value. OSM is showing signs of "pulling-in-its horns" and, hopefully, will approach the revised regulations in a more realistic fasion.

Laboratocy flarmnability tests were perfonned on dust samples from Fraser Mine in a 1.2 L Lindenburg horizontal tube furnace to detennine the percentage of sulphur oxidized during ignition. The explosion pot ential of sulphide dusts depends on their degree of spontaneous oxidat ion, which was measured by the quantitative analysis of so2 gas released during ignition. Test results indicated that dusts with low sulphur content could exhibit a higher degree of oxidation than a sample with high sulphur content. txlst characterisation using image analysis techniques suggests that the structure and the texture of dust are important factors influencing the explosibility of sulphide dust at ignition temperatures. Therefore for safe mine operations% sulphur content cannot be considered as a reliable single index that could be used to predict the potential of a sulphide dust explosion. Physical, chemical and mineralogical characterisation of dust plays an important role in the detennination of suitable indices for the prediction and prevention of sulphide ore dust explosions.

This paper examines the complex interplay of deposit characteristics, mining plans, tailings disposal techniques and rehabilitation requirements on planning for mineral sands operations. All component parts of this mining cycle are interdependent and cannot be evaluated in isolation when optimising a mineral sands operation. This is most evident when projects are large-scale or involve resources that contain complexities such as high slimes content, consolidated hard band materials, acid forming materials and radioactive materials. Projects located in environmentally sensitive areas add further to the need for more stringent planning. This paper describes the analysis techniques adopted by Hatch to evaluate mining and tailings placement options for a dredging and floating concentrator system. The principles and methods used in the analysis are applicable to any mining system involving the complexities listed above. The focus of this paper is on the reconstitution of mined material as tailings and the impact of this process on mining schedules and tailings construction and placement options.

After the primary or secondary lead production the bullion lead is remelted and charged into a vessel with following refining process. The removing of arsenic, antimony and tin takes place by salt slags or oxidizing gases like air or pure oxygen. Due to the increasing lead price, Messer Austria GmbH in cooperation with the institute of Nonferrous Metallurgy at the University of Leoben have developed a new process named OXIPOT for the refining of tin, arsenic and antimony. The OXIPOT process is in principle based on purging technology with a ceramic or steel purging device. This leads to an increased retention time of the refining products due to the deeper bath level and an optimized specific reaction volume concerning the bubble size. This paper describes the process, pilot plant, and thermodynamic calculations for the optimization concerning the selectivity of element removal.
