The increasing public interest in a useful framework for an assessment and classification of mineral resources (1) is documented by the recently published international classification scheme of the United Nations (1979) and the revision of the classification system of USBM/USGS (2) (1980). Moreover, various classification systems are currently discussed by the mining industry. In spite of major improvements in respect of the concepts, definitions, and taxonomy of ore classification, it has been recognized that the recent practice to classify mineral resources does not create truly reproductible results, i.e. an assessment to the various categories which is free from personal bias or corporate interests. Following are geostatistical methods proposed for a standardization and quantification of various terms in ore classification. After critical review of present practices, we will establish a precise link between the classical terms such as "measured", "indicated", and "inferred" reserves and the geostatistical concept of estimation errors. Moreover, we will demonstrate, how the basic criteria of economic feasibility, geologic assurance and recovery can be taken into account by geostatistics. A specific algorithm will be proposed to block out and to classify reserves according to the degree of geologic assurance. . We will also show computerized methods which perform complete classification procedures, and will also exemplify them with typical case studies.

"In concentrating production energy-consuming power installations are wide used, the most powerful of them are the wet autogenous grinding mill operating in closed circuit with a spiral classifier. The analysis of the current state of the automation of the grinding process shows that the reserves for maximizing productivity and minimizing electricity consumption have not yet been exhausted on the existing process equipment. Usage of the achievements of the modern management theory reveals an opportunity for further optimizing of the grinding process. The purpose of the research is to develop an automated control system of complex ""the mill-classifier"" to conduct the grinding process in the most operating efficiency, ensuring the maximization of productivity and minimization of specific electricity consumption. The main idea of this work is to study the specific features of the ore grinding process and creation on this basis of automated control system complex ""mill-classifier"" which allows to find and to maintain the optimal mode of grinding based on identification of the current object parameters, observance and regulating of the object state coordinates. Research methods. We used the methods of system analysis, mathematical statistics, modern automated control theory, theory of systems identification, optimal control, modelling of dynamic processes. Developed scientific provisions: - identification algorithm of the loading sub-system management object of complex ""mill - classifier"" allowing to obtain the unbiased estimators of its parameters according to the data of normal object exploitation; - observing device, which differs from the classic version of the observer Luenberger with possibility of estimating not only the state coordinates of the control object, but also the low-frequency perturbation component; - automated system stabilizing the active power of the grinding mode on the basis of a states controller with Luenberger observer; - structure of the software and hardware that implements the developed models, algorithms, methods of control, management and optimization in the framework of the automation of grinding."

It is common in practice to design laterally loaded rock-socketed drilled shafts using the p-y curve methods. However, the existing p-y curve criteria for rock were derived either semi-empirically or based on the assumption that the rock is an elastic isotropic continuum. The assumption of isotropy may be invalid for rocks with intrinsic anisotropy or for rocks with joints and bedding planes. Therefore, there is a need to develop a new p-y curve criterion to take into account the effects of rock anisotropy on the response of laterally loaded shafts. This paper presents a method for estimating the initial tangent Ki to the p-y curve for rock that can be characterized as transversely isotropic elastic continuum. Examples of transversely isotropic rock formation can be seen in most sedimentary rock where dominant bedding planes exist. The knowledge of the initial tangent to p-y curve is important, because it controls to a large extent the predicted deflection of laterally loaded drilled shaft in rock. The 3-D finite element parametric study results of a laterally loaded drilled shafts socketed in transversely isotropic continuum are employed to develop a series of design charts for estimating Ki as a function of transversely isotropic elastic constants.

A general review of the laboratory and field research being conducted at Michigan Technological University in the area of diesel emissions is presented. The facilities involved with this research are also described. These are the Experimental Mine, the diesel dilution tunnel test cell, the Mine Air Monitoring Lab (MAML), the portable instruments and the production mines used.

The transfer of kinetic energy of translation into other forms of energy by impact is a fundamental process in most crushing and grinding operations. During and after the impact process the original source energy may be accounted for in any of the following possible forms: 1) Kinetic energy of translation of both the impacted and impacting objects. 2) Kinetic energy of vibration of the components of the impact system. 3) Potential energy as strain energy of the components of the system or in the form of residual stresses. 4) Heat generated by internal friction during plastic deformation or during damping of elastic waves. 5) New surface energy of fractured materials. At any instant during the impact process only the strain energy of the components of the system can contribute directly to the brittle fracture process. If fracture is the desired result, as in comminution, it would seem advantageous to choose or arrange the conditions of impact so that a maximum amount of the original kinetic energy could be converted to strain energy at some moment during a single impact. The present work deals with determination of these desirable conditions for a simple case of impact and application of the principles involved to general cases of impact.

It was investigated in which form sulphur is bonded in ladle slags. For this purpose, the mineralogical phases of the ladle slags were qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated by means of a microprobe. This slag characterization allowed reconstructing the bonding of sulphur into the phases of the ladle slag. Moreover, the reaction process with regard to the ionic theory as well as the structural formula for the mechanism of sulphur bonding were discussed. The bonding of sulphur into calcium aluminate slags is determined by the sulphide ion content in the slag as well as by the ratio of (CaO)/(Al2O3). Calcium sulphide separates only if the slag contains a large number of sulphide ions. When Ca12Al14O33is separated, the sulphide ion is successively integrated into the lattice. The crystal lattice of Ca12Al14O33is characterized by an open, three-dimensional anionic network composed of aluminium-oxygen tetrahedrons linking the edges. In this network, large interstitial spaces are formed, which may be filled with calcium ions on the one hand and statistically with a free oxygen or sulphide ion on the other hand. Coal desulfurization has been regarded as an effective pretreatment for clean fuel and less environmental pollution. The microwave irradiation was used to desulfurize the Nantong coal leached with H2O2 and NaOH. The results showed the desulfurization rate of the coal is very low by directly microwave irradiation, while the coal samples leached with H2O2 and NaOH by microwave irradiation could effectively improve the desulfurization rate. The optimum desulfurization conditions were obtained as 10-min irradiation time, 800 W irradiation power, particle size below 74 μm, 1:1 concentration ratio of H2O2:NaOH, in which the desulfurization rate reached 51.14% of the total sulfur content. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectra of coals structure before and after treatment have shown the bands in both coals changed slightly except the relative intensity of some absorption ones. It can be found that most of FeS2 and –S–S– functional groups transferred after treatment, while –SH and –S=O– had almost no changing by ATR-FTIR spectra analysis. The structures of coal matrix would not be broken by microwave irradiation in reasonable the reaction conditions.

Swelling clay soils have been problematic to many types of infrastructure in the United States. However, their impact on underground construction is often misunderstood. The use of swell pressures in design of initial tunnel and shaft support lacks proper guidance and is often mis-interpreted. This paper provides insight and guidance on how to implement a geotechnical investigation program to determine if swelling soil exists at a site and how it impacts the design of temporary support systems for underground projects. An example is provided for how swell pressures were incorporated into the design of an initial support system for a rib and lagging tunnel system and problems that occurred.

The use of continuous discharge centrifugal concentrators introduced in the early 1990’s for recovery of gold associated with sulphides has introduced a novel application niche for gravity concentration which could not be realized with the low mass yield batch and semi-continuous concentrators. A typical application is scavenging gold associated with sulphides from flotation tails which has potential to increase productivity by reducing gold loss to tailings and lower grinding cost by using a coarser grind. However, the full potential of this technology has not been fully exploited partly due to the lack of reliable small sample procedures to demonstrate applicability. This paper introduces a bench-scale procedure developed to characterize the Knelson Continuous Variable Discharge concentrator (CVD) for scavenging gold from flotation tails. The procedure code named gravity release analysis was derived from standard flotation release analysis. It is a modification of the gravity recoverable gold and gravity amenability test in order to best simulate continuous centrifugal concentration. Based on this iterative procedure, a gravity release index similar to the flotation rate constant, for measuring individual mineral gravity susceptibility for an ore is introduced which can be a useful quantitative measure to both predict application of centrifugal concentration and for plant design. The gravity release analysis procedure was tested on a polymetallic flotation plant tailing at Myra Falls, BC, Canada and results show that it can predict CVD performance. The gravity release index for gold was observed to decrease with each successive cleaner stage showing that the initial stages recover liberated gold whilst successive runs recover gold associated with sulphides and or gangue. The difference in magnitude of the gravity release index for different mineral species shows the species separable by centrifugal concentration.

The Kipoi Central (KPC) copper project is located in the Katanga Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and is presented here as an example of an operating mine where the Mineral Resource was initially estimated by uniform conditioning (UC) and subsequently updated to localised uniform conditioning (LUC). This paper discusses the implementation of an estimate run using LUC and compares the results based on resource definition drilling to those obtained by close spaced grade control drilling and actual mill production.UC is a nonlinear geostatistical technique designed for recoverable resource estimation, typically using wide spaced exploration and resource definition drilling. The primary output of UC is the grade, tonnage and metal above a series of user-defined cut-off grades for a particular selective mining unit (SMU) block size. The UC approach is considered to provide a more accurate representation of the recoverable grade and tonnage at SMU support for non-zero grade cut-offs than would typically be achieved by a traditional linear estimator such as Ordinary Kriging. LUC is a relatively new approach involving the post-processing of a UC estimate and is used to spatially present the grade distribution predicted by UC at the SMU scale.This study demonstrates that the calculation of a more accurate and realistic grade-tonnage relationship for small SMU sized blocks is possible at the exploration stage using LUC, provided that the necessary theoretical and practical conditions for implementation of this technique exist.CITATION:Millad, M G and Zammit, M, 2014. The safety record of the metal mining and milling industries in 1965 is reviewed by the Bureau of Mines. The overall injury-frequency rate of 23.77 per million man-hours was 5 percent lower than in 1964 and was the lowest annual rate in a statistical history beginning with 1931. The injury-severity rate of 3,521 days lost per million man-hours in 1965 represented a 5-percent improvement over 1964. However, the total of 3,825 disabling work injuries comprised 61 fatal and 3,764 nonfatal injuries, one and 92 more, respectively, than in 1964. At primary nonferrous smelters, refineries, and reduction plants, the injury-frequency rate of 8.97 per million man-hours in 1965 was 13 percent lower, but the severity rate percent higher than in 1964. these plants in 1965, 4 more of 1,173 days lost per million man-hours was 17 There were 12 fatal and 971 nonfatal injuries at and 28 fewer, respectively, than in 1964.

"The diversification of energy sources in the United States has seen some major shifts during the past decade resulting from:• A sudden abundance of low-cost natural gas becoming available through advanced horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing techniques.• Incentive-driven policies leading to new development in alternative energy.• The emergence of alternative energy sources proliferated as a result of state and federal level incentives and falling capital costs.Coal was once recognized as the primary low-cost fuel source for the generation of electricity in the United States for most of the last century, providing upward of 50 percent of the total generation capacity during much of that period. However, within the past decade, lower-cost natural gas has overtaken coal as the primary source of fuel used in electricity generation, and alternative sources have steadily grown to now account for approximately 10 percent of the overall mix.West Virginia and Kentucky have not experienced the full breadth of the fuel shift, and, as of 2016, still obtained approximately 80-90 percent of electric power generation from coal. However, as coal plants are retired, there has been a shift toward natural gas for new power plants constructed in the region. The economics of power generation (i.e., lowcost fuel source) has typically been the major factor in determining shifts from one fuel source or technology to another. However, governmental energy policies and incentives have more recently been used to promote the development of new alternative technologies such as wind and solar energy growth to diversify the energy mix. The implementation of these incentives has provided some needed traction and resulted in driving the cost of manufacturing and installation of these new wind and solar systems downward to be more cost competitive with conventional fossil-fueled power sources. Future shifts in the generation capacity by fuel type will also be inevitable and impossible to project accurately as policies change and innovative technologies evolve. Determining factors may include the expiration of current incentives, decreasing capital costs, future environmental regulations, evolution of energy storage systems, technical challenges associated with increasing intermittent sources of generation and the development of unforeseen technologies. West Virginia and Kentucky have been among the least solar friendly states, ranking 44th and 48th of the 50 states (Fig. 1 for WV). MUCH has been said recently concerning the depletion of the Lake Superior iron ore re- serves. Estimates given indicate a total life of the present known reserves of twenty to thirty years. Some argue that there is no need to concern ourselves about the possible depletion of the Lake Superior iron ore supply because foreign ores can be brought in to this country at a lower price than rich agglomerated ore can be produced from the lean domestic ores. Some fear, as a result of this, a displacement of the steel business from present districts to the Atlantic seaboard. Others show that foreign ores will be brought to interior points via the projected Great Lakes-St. Lawrence waterway. Others believe that the South, given better freight rates, will extend its iron and steel market into northern territory.

"The Bypass Tunnel has high head conditions ranging from a minimum of 600 feet (183 m) under the Hudson River to a maximum of 875 feet (267 m) on the west side. The ground cover ranges from 425 feet to 900 feet (130 to 274 m). A two-pass lining is designed for the Bypass Tunnel. The bolted, gasketed precast segments carry the temporary hydrostatic and permanent ground loads. After the tunnel is put into service, the design assumes that the final lining, which varies from reinforced concrete to reinforced concrete with steel interliner, will carry the permanent hydrostatic loads. The design head for the segments is assumed at 775 feet (236 m), and the internal operating pressure head is around 1,200 feet (366 m). This paper discusses the design hydrostatic head and different load conditions considered for the segments, the load sharing between the segments and final lining, and the means employed to control water and hydrostatic pressure. PROJECT BACKGROUND The Rondout-West Branch Tunnel (RWBT), a segment of the Delaware Aqueduct, was built from 1937 to 1944 and provides about 50% of New York City’s total water supply. Monitoring and tunnel operations have shown that the RWBT is leaking up to 35 million gallons per day (MGD) (132.5 million L/day). In particular, two locations have been identified as areas of concern: Roseton and Wawarsing, as shown in Figure 1. The Wawarsing reach of the aqueduct will be repaired with an extensive grouting program when the RWBT is unwatered. However, because of the extensive nature of the leakage in the Roseton area, a Bypass Tunnel will be constructed to divert the flow around this area."

"After Hurricane Sandy, the stability of an earth slope in the Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey in the United States was deteriorating due to slumping soils and erosion from flooding. A slope stability evaluation indicated the slope did not satisfy the requirements of the local building code. A triple-tier, pile-supported and mechanically stabilized earth wall was designed and constructed to stabilize the slope. The construction was planned from a 3-m-wide roadway and, because of rough terrain and limited work space at the site, a cast-in-place drilled-pile construction was deemed impractical due to slow pile production. An alternative procedure was utilized by pre-drilling holes, and installing precast tip-and-shaft-grouted (PCTSG) piles, which extended to competent soils to improve slope stability. A grade beam, connecting the PCTSG piles along with soldier beams and concrete lagging were used to form the lowest tier of the slope stabilization, while the middle and higher tiers were built as mechanically stabilized earth. The stability of the proposed stabilization was analyzed using 2-D non-linear finite elements. After construction, monitoring of the wall continued for about 8 months to check its performance, and indicated lateral and vertical wall movements were less than 25 mm and 6 mm, respectively, indicating effective slope stabilization.INTRODUCTIONStabilizing earth slopes using piles to connect near-surface unstable soils to underlying stable ground masses has been investigated by many researchers, who presented various approaches to evaluate the contribution of the pile system towards improving the stability of the slope. Some of these approaches consider the piles as structural elements receiving forces from the upper sliding ground mass and transmitting these forces to the underlying stable one. The force from the top sliding mass is applied at between one third and one half of the pile embedment into the top sliding mass, Anagnostopoulos et al. (1990), Fukuoka (1977) and Matsui et al. (1988). The point of application of the sliding force was explored based on successful case histories while addressing the safety factors for both geotechnical and structural design, Vessely A. et al. (2007). The development of numerical analysis techniques utilizing the method of finite elements (FE) also enabled better analysis and design of slopes stabilized using piles. A FE-based approach was successfully utilized to design slope stabilization with target safety factor based on the shear and bending demands and the spacing of the piles, Pradel D. et al. (2010).After Hurricane Sandy in October 2012, the stability of many properties constructed atop earth slopes located along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean has become a concern due to storm-induced erosion. This paper presents the analysis, design and construction of a hybrid slope stabilization system utilized at one of these storm-impacted properties, which is located in the Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey in the United States. The subject property consisted of a two-story residential dwelling and a parking structure, and was built on top of an about 8-m-high earth slope having crest at about elevation 10 m (el 10) and toe at about el 2."

QueenslandÆs new safety legislation for metalliferous and coal mining (Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act 1999 and Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999, together with the Regulations) came into effect on 16 March 2001. The legislation places clear obligations on mine owners, operators and workers to have a safe place of work and to manage risks to safety and health. It also places obligations on contractors, designers and providers of services. The legislation is non-prescriptive in that it states what outcomes must be achieved and not what must be done. The key issue is that the risk of injury to people must be at an acceptable level. The legislation creates a Mines Inspectorate with powers of inspection and audit of mines, their safety management systems and the management of risks. Auditing of the risk management process is carried out against standard risk management techniques and directives for corrective action may be issued when audits reveal non-compliance or unacceptable levels of risk.

A line of nine self-aspirating W emco cells, part of the Rougher circuit at Division Salvador, Codelco Chile, was retrofitted to allow operation with forced air. Each cell could be operated self-aspirated or with compressed air supplied through a 4-inch line equipped with a mass flow meter. Gas dispersion was characterized for the two modes of operation. Metallurgical performance was compared under self-aspirated conditions and with different gas profiles under forced air conditions. Cell characterization demonstrated that with forced-air the cells could not evenly distribute air across the cell volume. Bubble size increased with gas velocity, as expected, with no difference between self-aspirated and forced-air operation. A systematic increase in bubble size down the bank was found. Cumulative bubble surface area flux down the bank showed no major differences between surveys. However, grade-recovery curves revealed that the highest recoveries were invariably obtained with forced air operation. Plotting concentrate mass recovery vs. enrichment ratio showed that the line performance could be controlled over a wider range when forced air was used.
