Os rejeitos gerados na mineração de carvão, sob condições atmosféricas e a possível presença de bactérias acidofílicas proporcionam a oxidação primária do sulfeto de ferro, formando sulfatos e ácido sulfúrico. Com a redução do pH da água, ocorre a mobilização de metais contidos no material, gerando a drenagem ácida de mina (DAM). A DAM causa um impacto nocivo na qualidade da água superficial ou subterrânea. Uma das tecnologias de prevenção da geração da DAM consiste no método de aditivos alcalinos. Assim, o objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar o controle da DAM pela mistura de rejeito de carvão com escória de aciaria elétrica do forno panela. A metodologia utilizada baseou-se nos ensaios estáticos e ensaios cinéticos. Os resultados demonstram que o rejeito de carvão gera DAM. Contudo os problemas ambientais podem ser em grande parte resolvidos pela mistura do rejeito com a escória na proporção acima de 10:10. Os ensaios cinéticos demonstram que, nessa condição, ocorre aumento do pH e redução do potencial redox e sulfatos na água lixiviada. Desta forma, a disposição conjunta de escória de aciaria elétrica do forno panela com rejeito de carvão é uma alternativa viável para o controle da geração de DAM em minerações de carvão.

The phase relationships of the MnTe-MnS system were studied by DTA procedures. There is an eutectic at 810°C with about 10 mole pct MnS-90 mole pct MnTe. An eutectoid occurs at about 710°C with approximately 7 mole pct MnS where the MnTe(NaCl) solid solution dissociates on cooling to MnTe(NiAs) and MnS. There is very little solid solubility of MnTe in MnS. ALTHOUGH MnS may exist in three different crystal forms,' only the NaC1-type phase is stable.2 Above 1040°C, MnTe also has the cubic NaC1-type structure. Below that temperature, MnTe changes to the NiAs-type structure.3 This phase transition is rapid for both heating and cooling. As a result the high-temperature crystal form of MnTe cannot be retained at room temperature. Because MnO, MnS, and MnSe are all stable with the NaC1-type structure, and MnTe has this structure at high temperatures,4 solid solution formation could be expected among these compounds. It is interesting to note, however, that a complete series of solid solutions exist only in the MnS-MnSe system,' and that the solid solution is quite limited in the MnO-MnS system.' The MnSe-MnTe system possesses a complete series of solid solutions at high temperatures with separation at lower temperatures.7 Although ion size may be critical in the miscibility of MnO-MnS, it is quite possible that the bond type plays a more important role with the miscibility of MnSe-MnTe. This would permit us to speculate that the miscibility gap would be extensive in the MnTe-MnS system. EXPERIMENTAL Preparation. The samples were prepared by mixing and compacting MnTe and MnS powders. The MnS was previously prepared through the sulfur reduction of Mnso4.8 The MnTe had been prepared by mixing and compacting double vacuum distilled metallic manganese and high-purity tellurium in stoichiometric ratio modified with 1 wt pct excess tellurium. The compacted powders were put in a graphite crucible which was sealed in an evacuated vycor tube. The free space in the vycor tube was made minimal to reduce the loss of tellurium. The sealed assembly was then heated slowly to about 500° C where the free manganese and tellurium reacted vigorously, melting the MnTe which formed. Only one phase, MnTe, was detected by X-ray powder patterns and metallographic techniques. Each compact of MnTe-MnS was placed in a graphite crucible and then sealed in an evacuated vycor tube. The samples were heated at 1250°C for 4 hr and furnace-cooled. Microscopic examination revealed no third phase beyond MnS and MnTe. A typical microstructure is presented in Fig. 1. Identification. X-ray powder patterns were obtained using 114.6 mm Debye-Scherrer camera and Fe-Ka radiation. Mixtures of cubic MnS and hexagonal MnTe were observed in all of the compositions prepared. No lattice parameter change was noticed among different compositions, indicating no solid solution could be retained at room temperatures between these two end-members. A lattice parameter of 5.244Å for MnS was obtained by the Nelson and Riley9 extrapolation method using the diffraction lines of (h2 + k2 + 12) equal 12, 16, 20, and 24. The values, a = 4.145Å and c = 6.708Å, for hexagonal MnTe were obtained from the (006) and (220) lines in the back-reflection region. These values agree well with the values reported by Taylor and Kag1e.10 Differential Thermal Analysis. A differential thermal analysis procedure was used to determine phase relationships since the high-temperature equilibrium conditions could not be retained for examination at room temperature, even when the sealed samples (~0.5 g) were quenched in water. The samples were sealed in an evacuated 4 mm vycor tube with a recess in the bottom to accept a thermocouple. An Al2O3 reference was similarly prepared and the two placed within a piece of insulating fire brick to dampen spurious temperature changes within the furnace. The furnace was controlled by a mechanically driven rheostat which increased the temperature at a rate of about 15°C per min. Zimbabwe Alloys and Zimasco represent more then ninety per cent of Zimbabwe?s ferrochrome smelting capacity, while Maranatha and Oliken contribute the difference. Very limited investment in the sector (even for the expansion of existing smelters) has been experienced over many years, despite the fact that about 95% of the world?s chrome ore resources are in the Bushveld Igneous Complex of South Africa and the Great Dyke of Zimbabwe. The Bushveld has a greater quantity but a lower grade than the Great Dyke. A ten per cent increase in Zimbabwean ferrochromium production has been recorded in the past ten years, showing an almost stagnant capacity investment.

Simulation of coal preparation circuits is becoming a widely practiced technique used for the design of coal preparation plants. On a much more limited basis, simulators are finding application in off-line process control. A typical application in the latter category involves inputting projected coal washability data for a shift into the simulator and using the software to optimize product quality and recovery within a range of predefined specifications. The plant is then operated at SG?s of separation determined from the simulation exercise for the one shift time period. This procedure is useful in that it incorporates some form of advanced planning into preparation plant operations. There is an attempt made to reflect changes in feed coal quality on a shift by shift basis rather than continually running the plant near design specifications with changes in SG?s of separation being made in response to an inadequate sampling program which only provides a spot measurement of material that has already passed through the plant. Instead of instituting changes on a shift by shift basis, NHI has proposed a method whereby monitoring three major operating parameters, * Feedrate to jig * Flowrate from hydrocyclone overflow * Density from cyclone overflow the ongoing plant operating performance can be accurately predicted on a continual basis, i.e., updated hourly. Using a distribution curve to predict the split between the clean coal and refuse from a given separator does not account for variations in efficiency that occur as a result of variations in operating parameters. NHI and Arch have studied the effect of both jig loading and solids content in the recirculating load to the jig on product quality. As a result, relatively simple measurements can be made on-line in a preparation plant which will provide input data to the simulation program that enables the prediction of jig/hydrocyclone circuit performance on a real time basis.

IN the past, the Cadomin Coal Company has opened four mines, all in the same coal seam or its folds. Three of these were opened from river level by horizontal entries or rock tunnels, and the fourth, the present working mine, by vertical shafts. This paper deals largely with some operating phases of this fourth mine, with which the writer has been associated. The seam worked here is a thick, steep, bituminous seam, and the writer feels there is a paucity of published data on the mining of such seams. Possible reasons for this are that such seams do not !end themselves to intensive development or mining, there is little chance to mechanize because of the extreme pitch, and operations are fraught with many problems. In addition, the present operations in this particular seam are being carried on at a level below the former workings, introducing new problems, not en-countered on the upper level. Coal will, without question, long continue to be an important factor in the national economy, and some of the best coal is to be found in thick, steep seams. But with the exhaustion of the easily-mined coal near the outcrops, future coal will have to come more and more from lower levels. At Cadomin there is still considerable coal on the second level, below the old river-workings, and there is a possibility that, in the future, still lower levels will be worked. It is the purpose of this paper to indicate some phases of such lower-level operations and to invite discussion.

Newmont Mining’s Ahafo Mine is located in Ghana approximately 300 km (190 miles) northwest of the capital city of Accra in the Brong-Ahafo region. The nearest city is Sunyani, located 45 km (28 miles) to the north. The Ahafo Mine will process ore from seven major pits that extend along a 40-km (25-mile) strike. Four pits are in the south and three pits are in the north. The resource is currently stated at 373 t (12 million oz). But it still has the potential for growth both from new discoveries and the development of underground operations.

THE death of Professor Blake removes the oldest of American economic geologists and mining engineers, and deprives this Institute of one of its, earliest and most illustrious members. To many of us it brings a personal loss also, the loss of a friend. William Phipps Blake was born June 21, 1826, in New York City. -His father, Elihu Blake, was a surgeon-dentist of eminence, a direct descendant of William Blake, who settled in the Massachusetts Bay Colony about 1630. He was prepared for college at private schools in New York, and entered the Sheffield School of Yale, where he was graduated as Ph.B. in the chemical course, class of 1852, the first graduating-class of the institution. In the same year he became chemist and mineralogist of the New Jersey Zinc Co., and chemist of chemical works at Baltimore, Md. In 1853, lie started the Department of Mineralogy of the World's Fair at New York City. In 1854, 1855 and 1856, he was mineralogist and geologist of the United States Pacific Railroad Surveys of Williamson, Pope, and Whipple, and for the War Department at Washington. His writings, during this period comprise reports on the geology and mineralogy of California and other parts of the Southwest, and constitute well nigh the earliest scientific accounts of the regions described. One of them. was a translation of the Resume and Field Notes of Jules Marcou, of Whipple's expedition. From 1856 to 1859, he was engaged in explorations of the geology and mineral deposits of North Carolina, :and other parts of the country. In 1859, he became editor and proprietor of The Mining Magazine. This was a monthly periodical, founded in 1853 by W. J. Tenny, who conducted it until 1858, when it passed into the hands of Thomas McElrath, a New York publisher, and appeared in May of that year as The Mining and Statistic Magazine, with the name of

"Cathodic and anodic reactions in an acidic nitrate medium were studied in reference to the production of electrolytic manganese dioxide from pyrolusite' (Mn02) ores by reductive leaching. Two USA ores were investigated. The reductant for the pyrolusite ore is produced cathodically in an electrolytic cell and can either be nitrous acid (HN02) or nitric oxide gas (NO). In this work emphasis was placed on the nitrous acid leach. In a high-temperature leach in a nitrous/nitric acid medium, manganese and silver are solubilized and iron is not. Anodic electrowinning of manganese dioxide from the acidic manganese nitrate electrolyte yields flaky y-Mn02, similar to that produced from sulfate and chloride electrolytes. Cathodic regeneration of nitrorts acid was studied in a membrane cell in 1.0 M nitric acid and 0.0 to 0.1 M nitrous acid on a' platinized titanium cathode. At cathode potentials ranging from +950 to +700 mV (SHE), cathodic reduction to nitrous acid takes place, at cathode potentials < +700 mV, cathodic reduction of nitrous acid to nitric oxide takes place. A conceptual process is presented and discussed.IntroductionManganiferous-silver oresLarge reserves of manganiferous-silver ores are present in the Southwestern United States and Latin America. These ores are generally refractory to hydrometallurgical methods of treatment, due to the insolubility of the higher oxides of manganese (Mn 4+) in all common lixiviants such as cyanide solutions, dilute sulfuric acid, nitric acid, ammonia, salt solution, thiosulfates, etc. The silver is either bound by the insoluble manganese, or is rendered inaccessible to cyanide leach solution by the surrounding manganese mineralization.Higher oxides of manganese will dissolve if they are first reduced pyrometallurgically to manganous oxide (Mn2+). This is a widely used pretreatment for manganese dioxide ores and subsequent dissolution in sulfuric acid is common. In order to avoid the pyrometallurgical pretreatment with its large energy requirements and gaseous emissions, fully hydrometallurgical processes have been proposed. These processes are based on the presence of a reductant in solution, in order to reduce the insoluble higher oxides of manganese to soluble lower oxides. Aqueous S02 has been proposed and tested on industrial scale by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. After washing, silver could be extracted by cyanidation. The neutralization of the pulp prior to cyanidation however causes problems in filtration and the reagent consumptions are high [1]. More recently, acidified thiourea and bacteria were proposed for the solubilization of both manganese and silver in a single leach step. High extractions were obtained, but drawbacks of these methods are high reagent consumption or slow kinetics [2,3]. For the options of manganese recovery from the leach filtrate, precipitation with persulfate or ammonium carbonate and ion exchange have been proposed. The proposed options for silver reclaim are precipitation with either zinc or Na2S and adsorption onto activated carbon."

Isothermally formed plates of proeutectoid a, lengthen at approximately the rates predicted by the Zener-Hillert equation, indicating that their lengthening kinetics are controlled by the volume diffusion of chromium in the ß matrix. Solution annealing treatments in the vicinity of the transus introduce a second mode of transformation, in which the lengthening rate is at least 1.8 x 104 faster than predicted by this equation. Little or no volume diffusion appears to accompany the latter transformation. The Presence of oxygen is evidently a Prerequisite for the occurrence of this reaction. X HE effects of thermal history prior to the initiation of transformations which proceed by nucleation and diffusional growth are currently evoking considerable interest. The rate of nucleation (but not the rates of growth) of pearlitel and of bainite,2 and the over-all rates of aging reactions in Al-cu3 and Al-si4 alloys have been shown to be appreciably dependent upon thermal history in the solid-solution region"&apos; or in the two-phase region prior to the onset of pre~ipitation.3,4 In none of these reactions, however, was the transformation mechanism changed by variations in the temperature-time path used to reach the reaction temperature. Preliminary experiments reported by M. K. McQuillan5,8 and a systematic investigation by Farrar and Margolin7 have disclosed that the transformation behavior of hypoeutectoid Ti-Cr alloys is considerably more sensitive to thermal history. Qualitative evidence strongly suggests that not only the rate of nucleation but also the rate of growth and even the mechanism of the ß — a reaction can undergo remarkable changes when a solution annealing treatment in the vicinity of the ß/a +ß, or transus temperature, is interposed between a high-temperature solution anneal (conventionallq at 1000°C) and the isothermal reaction treatment. The present investigation was undertaken in an attempt to ascertain the nature and origin of these effects. Study of the changes in the kinetics and morphology of the ß - a, reaction produced by varialtions in thermal history was the primary means employed for this purpose. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The compositions of the alloys used in this in~esti~ation are given in Table I. These alloys were homogenized for 5 days at 1050° C in evacuated (2 x 10 -5 mm of Hg), zirconium-gettered fused quartz capsules. The capsules themselves were enclosed in a porcelain chamber evacuated with a mechanical pump during the homogenization anneals. Upon completion of homogenization, the alloys were cooled to room temperature and then reheated to 550°C for 3 1/2 days in order to transform the alloys to a finely divided mixture of a and TiCr2, and thus provide an approximately constant initial mi-crostructure. Individual specimens were sealed in evacuated and internally gettered Vycor capsules and heat treated as previously described.8,9 EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Ti-10.64 Pet Cr. A crystalline polyferric sulfate (PFS) adsorbent was synthesized by oxidizing and precipitating ferrous ions under atmospheric conditions. The morphology, structure, composition and specific surface area (SSA) and adsorptive efficacy to As (III) of the adsorbent were characterized by SEM/EDS and TEM images, XRD patterns, FT-IR spectra, BET SSA analyses and adsorption experiments. The adsorbent presents as morphology of near-spherical aggregate and good crystallinity. A small amount of goethite co-precipitated with PFS in the case of the initial ferrous concentration of 1 mol/L and increased the SSA of the aggregates. The absorbent with co-precipitation of goethite showed good adsorption to As(III) and good filtering performance in the high As(III)-content solution of 10–100 mg/L under acidic, neutral and alkaline conditions (pH 2.09–9.01), and its maximal adsorption capacity and adsorption efficiency were 7911 μg/g and 96% separately. After Adsorption, the stability of the absorbents adsorbing As(III) were evaluated by TCLP tests, and the results indicated that the absorbents adsorbing As(III) were extremely stable, and the concentration of arsenic in all leaching solutions were less than 0.01 mg/L.

The paper describes the discovery, location and events concerning three types of heating which have occurred in recent years: a) in a district being salvaged, b) in the shaft pillar at an air-crossing, and c) in the gate side of a production district, all of which have occurred in the Beeston Seam at collieries in the deeper eastern part of the area. The paper describes the precautions, air sampling arrangements, training methods and codes of practice which have been adopted at collieries where spontaneous combustion is, or is likely to be, a hazard. The air samples taken from behind the stoppings following the sealing off of the salvaging district are examined and interpreted. The problem of effectively sealing off where more than two stoppings are required is made apparent. Other lessons have been learned as a result of these heatings and are described in the paper.

TiO2 is an ideal material for catalytic technology due to its unique properties. In this paper, Sm3+ doped TiO2 photo-catalyst was developed to improve the efficiency of TiO2 and to use the natural light as irradiation source, which was made from Titanium Tetrabutoxide and Samarium Oxide with the Sol-Gel process. The Sm3+-TiO2 photocatalyst was used to degrade reactive orange 4 (RO4) in Azo Dyes. The effects of solution pH, Sm3+ concentration and catalytic time on the degradation rate of RO4 were studied. The characteristics of the catalyst were analyzed with XRD and TEM. The experimental results show that the catalyst has high activity in the degradation of RO4. The Azo bonds of RO4 are active and easily broken by oxidation. The catalytic activity of the Sm3+ doped catalyst greatly depends on the pH of solution. The catalyst has high photo-catalytic activity at both neutral and alkaline conditions. The degradation mechanism of the Sm3+ doped TiO2 photo-catalyst was also discussed.

A study of the consumption of reagents used in flotation gives useful data as to the market which employment of the flotation process creates for the manufacturers of the necessary chemicals and oils, and furnishes a useful clue to the trends in flotation practice influencing the choice of reagents used and the&apos; extent to which new reagents are displacing less suitable older reagents. In the present investigation an attempt has been made to cover both of these phases of the consumption of reagents in flotation. Unfortunately, however, the data collected in tie various districts have not been equally informative; some operators have reported very completely both the consumption of reagents and the metallurgical results obtained therewith, while others were apparently unable to supply these figures in sufficient detail to meet the requirements of this investigation. RESULTS OF INVESTIGATION Table 1 gives the tonnage of ore treated by flotation, as reported. This table shows that flotation has been most largely used in the concentration of copper ores, next in complex lead-zinc ores, followed by lead ores, zinc ores, miscellaneous ores, and copper-iron ores.

"To extend the variety of lump ores that are used in the COREX shaft furnace and to optimize iron ore blending, the original evaluation method for iron ores that was proposed by Voestalpine AG has been improved. Physicochemical and metallurgical properties of iron ores, including Sishen lump ore and CVRD pellets, which are currently used in the COREX process, and three other lump ores, were assessed and compared. Ore matching principles were proposed and five optimized iron ore blending schemes designed and verified by laboratory experiments to prove the effectiveness of the improved evaluation method. The replacement of Sishen lump ore by the alternative L2 and L3 lump ores without varying the proportion of CVRD pellets could improve the degree of reduction and rate of metallization, and decrease the bonding index. Based on the results of laboratory test work and industrial- trials, an ore blending scheme of 60% CVRD, 20% L2, and 20% L3 is recommended for use in the COREX process. IntroductionIn recent years, problems such as environmental pollution and a shortage of coke and coal resources for blast-furnace ironmaking have become increasingly apparent. Based on sustainable developments in the iron- and steelmaking industries, the environmentally friendly COREX smelting-reduction process with low energy consumption was developed and introduced (Zhou and Du, 2013; Song, Lv, and Yin, 2015; Xu et al., 2016; Kurunov, 2010). The evaluation system for lump ore that was proposed by Voestalpine AG recommends that only Sishen lump ore from South Africa be used in the COREX process, because of the stringent physicochemical and metallurgical property requirements. This situation significantly hampers improvements to the technical and economic aspects of the COREX ironmaking process, especially in China (Eberle, Siuka, and Bohm, 2006). No theoretical or technical basis has been provided for the evaluation system, and the assessment approach for iron ores also presents problems that need to be discussed and resolved.The COREX process consists of two reactors: the prereduction shaft furnace and the melting gasifier as shown in Figure 1 (Wu et al., 2017). Pellets and lump ores which are charged to the prereduction shaft should have a good reducibility and metallization with a low degradation index (Li et al., 2016; Wu et al., 2011; Kumar et al., 2009; Kang, Gupta, and Sahajwalla, 2007). The properties and microstructure of the iron ore pellets which are required to achieve a high productivity and a lower fuel rate in the COREX process have been investigated (Umadevi et al., 2011). Some efforts have also been made to investigate the behaviour of lump ores in the COREX shaft furnace, including the disintegration characteristics and the reduction degradation (Umadevi et al., 2011; Zhou et al., 2015; Xu et al., 2013; Li, Feng, and Zou, 2013; Hou et al., 2014). However, few studies have focused on the optimization of ore blending for partial or total substitution of the expensive Sishen lump ore by other, cheaper lump ores to reduce the production cost. The technology for the utilization of blended lump ores in the COREX process is still in its early development stages (Zhou et al., 2017; You et al., 2017)."

Conventionally low carbon ferromanganese is manufactured globally by refining high carbon ferromanganese in liquid state. This process is an expensive and lengthy technique. Hence, the present work was undertaken with the objective of understanding the feasibility and kinetics of the solid state refining of ferromanganese. The process involved transformation of carbon rich carbides viz. Mn3C2, Mn7C3 into metal rich carbide i.e. Mn15C4, Mn23C6 by subjecting the alloy powder to a flowing stream of carbon dioxide. Effect of the process governing parameters such as time, temperature, particle size, pressure on the extent of decarburization was studied. Without any loss of manganese in the form of fumes or slag, it was observed that, there was substantial reduction, viz. 65 per cent in the total carbon content, by this technique. Subsequently, the process was investigated to find out the mechanism of carbon removal. Depending upon the temperature and the particle size, it was found that the rate controlling mechanism changes from chemical reaction control to product layer (ash) diffusion control. The activation energy for each of the aforesaid mechanism was computed. The values thus obtained substantiated the aforesaid mechanisms.

The cold-rolled steel output of cold-rolling mill (CRM) complexes are sometimes constrained by their batch annealing facilities (BAF). This paper examines a cost-effective solution to increasing capacity and quality of the BAF thereby making additional capacity available for CRM output. The solution involves applying a structured system of scheduling and operation to the BAF, using a proven level-2 software model. The system presented has been applied to a wide variety of BAF with all the leading furnace brands. Whether using traditional HN atmosphere or 100% hydrogen, peak performance can be achieved when using a properly configured, on-line, physical thermodynamic model. Given that it is not practical to place a thermocouple in each coil that is being annealed, various methods have historically been used to estimate the time required to properly anneal all the coils in the charge. This paper examines how the latest technology, in wide use throughout the USA, uses a physical thermodynamic model to shorten average cycle times, thereby increasing productivity and reducing energy consumption. The paper also examines the benefit of building thermodynamically balanced charges to further optimize the BAF operation and improve quality consistency by decreasing mechanical property variations.

"The artisanal mining sector in Central Africa is largely informal, yet provides an essential livelihood for many (directly or indirectly) participants, as well as facilitating an important source for the flow of income into many communities. Artisanal mining varies from site to site, but appear largely well structured despite its informality. The artisanal mining sites in Central Africa have some inherent management structure and the extraction itself is often organised. Artisanal mining is labour intensive and is generally conducted utilising hand digging methods e.g. shovels or hand chisels. Artisanal mining is generally more dangerous than small-scale or large-scale modern mining operations. This is especially true as artisanal operations are generally subsistence activities with artisanal miners focusing more on immediate concerns than the long-term consequences of their activities. When miners have no other source of income, they will usually find ways to evade controls and carry on working. The objective, through proper/dedicated training of artisanal miners is to migrate Artisanal mining to establish a small-scale mining (SSM) industry in Central Africa. Through developing the necessary skills in the fundamental areas of mining it is proposed that Artisanal Mining can become more productive and safer mining operations. The paper reviews the above focus areas, highlighting the skills and tools that are necessary to assist in establishing a sustainable small scale mining industry migrating from manual labour to semi-mechanised mining and processing. The purpose of the transformation process is to create a safe, healthy, environmental and community oriented mining operation with the objective to uplift the skills and wealth of the mineworkers and the general community."
