A study of Americarf coal-mine practice shows two of its distinctive features to be: A greater number of accidents per thousand employees than in any of the other leading coal-producing countries; a much greater percentage of the coal lost than in any of the other leading coal-producing countries. Although our subject is mainly concerned with the second feature, any consideration of mining methods should include safety, efficiency, and economy or costs. If the argument could be offered that our wasteful mining was necessary on account of safety, and that it is carried out with less loss of life than in other countries, the plea for conservation of coal could not he so strongly urged. But when we are wasteful of both life and property, the subject merits more: consideration than it has received. Some coal operators will doubtless say that the unit of accidents should be the number per million tons produced rather than per thousand employees, for by adopting this unit America probably stands in the lead rather than the lowest among the countries. However, vital statistics are not usually so expressed by other governments, by life and accident insurance companies, or in other industries, and it is merely begging the question and attempting to bolster up a bad condition to adopt a peculiar unit for the statement of our accidents. For many years the statement was made by various agencies, and was unchallenged, that "For every ton of bituminous coal mined in the United States a ton had been lost in the way of pillars left in the mines." This statement was undoubtedly true for many years, and although in the past decade some progress has been made toward obtaining a higher extraction, and in some districts very decided progress, the loss is still great; and, although no exact data can be given, it is probable that for the United States as a whole at least one ton is lost for every two mined.

Application of shrinkage stoping methods, without filling, in the mining of large silver-gold orebodies in the Mogollon district, where the ore is hard and wall rocks stand well without timbering and where veins make little water. Vertical and inclined shafts in use with both surface and underground hoisting stations. Storage pockets used on main hoisting levels, with electric signals and telephones for communication. Power is generated by De La Vergne engines having a total sea-level rating of 1540 hp. On account of the remote location of the camp, transportation is an important item of expense, amounting in 1922 to $0.641 per ton of ore milled or $0.265 per ton-mile on all freight hauled. THE Mogollon mining district is in the southwestern part of New Mexico near the southern end of the Mogollon range, from which the district takes its name. The town of Mogollon is but 37 1/2 mi. in an air line northeast of Clifton, Ariz. The air-line distance from Silver City is 52 1/2 mi. and from Tyrone, 57 mi. Supplies are transported by motor truck from Silver City. The distance by road is 75 mi., half of which is an improved highway of modern construction. Transportation has always - been a large item of expense in carrying on operations in the district. Valuable ore is said to have been discovered in the Mogollon Mountains as early as 1870 but the first regular prospecting was carried on in 1875, by James C. Cooney, a sergeant from Fort Bayard. His discovery of rich silver-copper ores in the region of Mineral Creek led to the establishment of the Camp of Cooney. Remote from any settlements where there was a semblance of law and order, and harassed by the Apaches, development was slow and nearly 10 years elapsed before the village of Mogollon was established on Silver Creek. Prospecting in this section of the district had disclosed the outcrops of several promising veins containing silver-gold ores. Among the early claims located were the Last Chance, Top and Confidence, on what has proved to be the most productive vein in the district.

A study has been made of the decarburization of low-carbon sheet steels at temperatures from 1100" to 1475°F in mixtures containing hydrogen, nitrogen, water vapor, and in some instances carbon monoxide. Decarburization occurs principally by the reaction C (in steel) + H20 = CO + H2 and follows a first-order rate law. The decarburization rate appreciably increases with an increase in temperature up to about 1325°F, but the increase in rate is small with fur- Use of a dry hydrogen atmosphere results in a relatively slow decarburization of steel and use of a wet hydrogen atmosphere results in relatively rapid decarburization. It is now generally recognized' that the reaction C (in steel) + H2O = H2 + CO [l] accounts for most of the decarburization that occurs in wet hydrogen-containing atmospheres. The present article is concerned with the decarburization of low-carbon sheet steel in H2-N2 atmospheres ther increase in temperature. The limiting rate of decarburization can be predicted from a knowledge of the solid solubility and diffusivity of carbon and this rate is approached as the water-vapor content of an atmosphere is increased. Hydrogen contents above about 8 pct are beneficial only in that they permit higher levels of water vapor to be used without oxidation of the steel. A buildup of CO in the atmosphere lowers the rate of decarburization. containing various amounts of water vapor and carbon monoxide. The effectiveness of these atmospheres and the influence of temperature on decarburization rate will be considered. EXPERIMENTAL WORK The chemical compositions of the three steels used in decarburization-rate studies are listed in Table I. Steel A was a commercially hot-rolled rimmed steel that was cold-reduced at the Laboratory to furnish specimens 0.025, 0.041, and 0.059 in. thick. The six main drives needed to build 55 miles of 4.8 and 7.7 metre i.d. tunnels in 33 months called for careful co-ordination of the design of tunnel boring machines and linings. The implications of these requirements are discussed, with particular reference to the selection of tunnel liners. The solutions adopted are detailed and details are given of the specifications and procedures adopted. The design methods employed for liners are outlined. The construction methods are described and current performance figures given.

In 1990, the Chino Smelter completed the construction of a plant designed to recover metal values and water from smelter scrubber effluent. Equipment was installed to maximize effluent recycling and minimize costs. The process utilizes magnesium hydroxide as a neutralizing agent which has the advantage of precipitating copper from solution with minimum generation of solid reaction products. The neutralized stream is clarified, with solids recycled to the smelter for metal recovery while the clarified effluent is recycled to the concentrator for use as process water.

The surface charge, electrokinetic potential and surface conductance were studied for silica, alumina and rutile as the functions of PH and concentration of 1-1 electrolyte solutions. The adsorption potentials of potential-determining and specifically adsorbed ions were calculated from isoelectric and zero charge points on the basis of Stern equation and thermodynamic description. From surface conductance and charge data the mean ionic mobilities in double layer were estimated. The results give some information about the real structure of oxide-electrolyte interface and gel-layer concept.

A hydrogen peroxide precipitate process has been adopted by Atlas Minerals for the recovery of uranium oxides from sodium chloride strip solutions. Adoption of the process was based on laboratory and plant tests comparing hydrogen peroxide with other precipitants. Plant operation has demonstrated that the hydrogen peroxide process consistently yields uranium concentrates of high purity and barrens of low uranium content. Increased U3O8 concentration in the product, reduced levels of impurities which incur penalties, and higher product density have produced economic advantages.

Coal preparation for a company having several sources of coal and several contracts for sale of coal was modeled. The objective was to minimize wash loss by selecting the quantity of coal to be supplied from each source and the appropriate washbox specific gravity setting to yield contract quality for a given shipment. constraints inposed by silo and stockpile sizes, plant and rehandling capacities, and varying coal quality specifications were included in the model. Solution is by iterative linear programming on an Apple II.

"For gold leaching of oxide ores, the optimum cyanide : oxygen ratio is approximately 106 mg/L NaCN : 10 mg/L O2 (6.9:1 by mole). In sulphide ores, galvanic coupling of the gold with the electrically conductive sulphides significantly increases this ratio such that leaching may occur in a relatively low dissolved oxygen (DO) environment.RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONGold leaching in a carbon in pulp (CIP) and carbon in leach (CIL) circuit is driven by the supply of cyanide and oxygen, as described by Elsner’s equation (1):• 4Au + 8CN- + O2 + 2H2O ? 4Au(CN)2 - + 4OH- (1)Equation 1 suggests that the ideal molar cyanide : oxygen ratio should be 8:1, or 122.5 mg/L NaCN to 10 mg/L of DO. It is generally accepted however, that oxygen is not completely reduced to hydroxide at the gold surface, and that equation (2) better represents the gold leaching reaction (Marsden and House, 1992):• 4Au + 8CN- + 2O2 + H2O ? 4Au(CN)2 - + 2OH- + H2O2 (2)Additionally, since gold leaching is limited by either the diffusion of cyanide or oxygen to the gold surface (Habashi, 1993), then the relative diffusion rates of cyanide and oxygen must also be taken into account. Marsden and House (1992) suggest that the ideal molar cyanide : oxygen ratio is 6:1, while a more recent investigation using laboratory and plant observations (Heath and Rumball, 1998) suggested a molar ratio of 6.9:1.In practice, although a cyanide : oxygen mole ratio of 6.9:1 applies to some circuits, there are many instances when this is not the case.In sulphide ores, galvanic coupling of the gold with the electrically conductive sulphides significantly increases this ratio. Galvanically connected sulphides, and possibly carbon, provide a large surface area for oxygen reduction. As the cathode surface area increases, the oxygen concentration required to sustain the same rate of gold oxidation decreases proportionately.Galvanically connected particles may be composite particles, however they may simply be liberated sulphides in the same suspension as the gold. Particle collisions within a slurry are sufficient to provide momentary galvanic connection (Greet, 1995)."

Old tailings from Zn, Au, Cu, and Ni mining operations were characterized. Their mineralogical variation in depth is compared with matching pore water and solids chemistry. A geochemical model was used to predict minerals precipitating from pore water solutions. These are compared with actual secondary minerals occurring. The degree to which the precipitation of secondary minerals controls the sulfate and iron concentration of the pore water was also investigated. The results obtained are related to the selection of the most appropriate modes of tailings deposition.

This investigation by the Bureau of Mines was undertaken to develop information on the extractive metallurgy of thorite ores because potential ore bodies of this mineral have been found recently in Colorado, Idaho, and Montana. Basic information on thorite ore treatment that would be useful in appraising the potential of these and other domestic thorium resources was developed. The work was done mainly on thorite ore containing 3.87 percent ThO2 from the Powderhorn district, Colo., and on a composite sample containing 0.52 percent ThO2 from the Wet Mountains district, Colo. Limited tests of d corroborative nature subsequently were made on a sample containing 2.30 percent ThO2 from the Lemhi Pass area on the Idaho-Montana border.

The experimental work reported herein firas inspired by the publication of a paper by Grange and stewart, in which it was suggested that at low chromium contents the effect of this element on the Ma point was greater than at higher chromium contents, It was argued that, if a small increase of chromium in solution in austenite caused a sharp lowering of the M, point, it might lead to an explanation of occasional unsolved stress cracking of SAE 52100 during heat treatment. Commercial hardening is carried out at temperatures of incomplete solution, leaving carbides available to enrich the austenite during any inadvertent increase in temperature, such enrichment of the austenite in chromium content would lower the M, point nearer room temperature where cracking is more likely to occur. According, it was decided to investigate the effect of chromium, in quantities between o and 2 pet, on the M, point of commercial steels. Fig I summarizes the data available on chromium steels. For purposes of comparison, the M, temperature values were corrected by means of the Grange and Stewart formulas to (I) Hypoeutectoid compositions: 0.50 pct carbon and 0.80 pct manganese (z) Hsereutectoid compos-sition': 1." pet carbon and O.35 pct manganese. Only the steels having compositions reasonably close to these corrected values were included, because large adjustments inevitably introduce increased error such as are experienced in using the formula. The straight lines of Fig I were drawn by the authors. These data obviously do not settle the question Of the effect Of chromium On the Md Oint, particularly at low chromium contents. While it is fairly well established that chromium causes the M, to be lowered when present in quantities of I pet Or more, Grange and Stewart1 have suggested that in small amounts (less than 1 pet) it is more effective in lowering the Ma point, while Klier and Troiano2 have suggested that in small amounts it is less effective in lowering the Ma point. Payson and Savage3 concur with Klier and Troiano and further suggest that the effect is not linear at these concentrations. Rose and Fischer4 report that small amounts of chromium actually raise the Ma point of a 0.20 carbon steel. Material Two series of 35 Ib induction heats were melted for this work, the analyses of which are given in Table I. "This paper refers to a new process for the full recovery (above 98%) of zinc and other valuable metals (Pb, Ag, Au) accompanying zinc in its concentrates while iron is separated as a marketable product free of any harmful impurities and suitable for sale to the cement industry. The process has been especially designed to achieve the following goals: maximizing the recovery of zinc and those valuable metals that are present in most zinc concentrates (lead, silver, gold); allowing the recovery of other valuable metals such as indium or germanium that could be present in some zinc concentrates; avoiding or minimizing the need for residue disposal in safe areas as it is the common practice nowadays in the zinc industry. Finally, the process achieves the previously related goals at a competitive cost, in line with the existing more efficient operations while using conventional equipment working under atmospheric conditions. The new process can be easily implemented in those smelters using the jarosite or goethite processes as well as in those smelters using direct leaching as a part of the processing facilities. A study has already been conducted on the use of jarosite in the cement manufacturing process, in the raw mix preparation as well as for a set controller. It shows that use of clean jarosite in the manufacture of ordinary Portland cement can result in improved quality of the clinker. Jarosite showed compatibility to influence the burning characteristics of the cement raw mixes. The presence of SO3 bearing mineral phases such as natrojarosite showed the suitability of clean jarosite for use as a set controller in cement production.INTRODUCTION Iron is by far the most abundant impurity accompanying zinc in its concentrates, and consequently, iron residue disposal is a major environmental concern for many zinc smelters in the world. This is especially true during the last 30 years when environmental restrictions became more and more strict. Much research work has been carried out during the last 30 years to try to find a solution for this important issue, but with little success. Only the jarofix process represents a partial solution to this problem as jarofix is stored nearby the smelters with certain limitations as a non-contaminant residue. However, it does not avoid the need to dispose of an important amount of residues every year, representing an environmental liability. Meanwhile, the number of countries limiting or banning the disposal of iron residues generated by the zinc smelters is growing, so that the solution to this problem is becoming an urgent matter right now. At the same time, the lack of appropriate available land for iron disposal is also a major concern in many cases."

The most common methods of processing of uranium ores is sulfuric or carbonate leaching with conversion of hexavalent uranium to uranyl carbonate or sulfate anionic complexes followed by sorption of the later by strong base anion (SBA) exchange resins. It is known that chloride anion has high affinity for SBA resins so that it depresses sorption of anionic complexes of uranyl. Application of the SBA resins becomes impractical for recovery of uranium when chloride concentration in pregnant leach solution exceeds 3-5 g/l [1-3].

Table 8 provides data for the estimated value of world export trade of all mineral commodities from 1980 through 1991. It also provides a breakdown of the total into mineral fuels and non fuel minerals. These data have been developed from UN export trade data presented in table 9. The percent distribution and growth of the value of world export by major commodity groups are presented in tables 9, 10, and 11, respectively. In terms of industrial minerals (nonmetals), data in tables 10 and 11 include crude industrial minerals only, while table 8 includes an estimate for other industrial minerals. The 1991 estimates that appeared in the 1991 issues of this publication have been revised. It is typical for this section to review the year prior to the year of review because of the unavailability of data at the time of publication. The aggregated value of export trade in mineral commodities for 1992 was not available at the time of publication. The total value of nonfuel and fuel mineral exports for 1991 was about $616 billion in current (1991) dollars. The value of mineral fuel export trade accounted for about 53 % of the total mineral export trade. In 1980, the contribution of mineral fuel to the value of mineral commodity export trade had been almost 68%. The 1991 world mineral commodity export trade represents a 5.3% decrease (table 8) from that of 1990. The largest decrease was attributed to the decrease of export trade of fuel minerals (5%). The value of non fuel mineral export trade decreased by 4 %. Because the value export trade of all commodities increased by 1.2 %, the share of mineral commodities decreased from 19.2 % to 17.9 % of the total.

"A complementary ion exchange/solvent extraction process for the recovery of copper from low-grade ores developed by Iontech Engineering Ltd. is described. It has successfully been implemented on a full-scale plant level at the Buchim Copper Mine in Macedonia, yielding a maximum copper cathode production of 2400 tonnes per year. Technical and economic aspects of three years of operational experience are comprehensively compared with the Asarel Medet copper plant in Bulgaria, which is utilizing conventional solvent extraction in the enrichment/purification step. INTRODUCTION The concentration and separation of copper from primary leachates is one of the key operations in the hydrometallurgical processing of oxide ores (Langner, 2011). Conventionally, this basic operation is conducted by submitting the pregnant leach solution (PLS), with a 1–5 g/L Cu content, from the initial sulfuric acid leach to a solvent-extraction (SX) process in which copper reports to the organic phase (see Figure 1). After phase separation, the metal is stripped from the extractant/diluent mixture employing sulfuric acid to furnish a concentrated metal solution, usually containing 40–50 g Cu/L. The final products of the overall process are copper cathodes, which are obtained from a terminal electrowinning step.Although considered as “technology of choice”, SX to date is still suffering from several drawbacks, such as the risk of poor phase disengagement and the high capital costs of solvent-extraction plants. Especially, the processing of leachates with lower copper tenors (< 1 g/L) is often economically less attractive. As a result, tremendous efforts have been dedicated to the evaluation of alternative technologies to address these challenges."

"Airlift reactors are used in a wide range of industries, such as hydrometallurgy, biochemical processes, chemical process industry and waste water treatment. With increasing superficial gas velocity three circulation regimes can be defined: no gas bubbles in the downcomer, gas bubbles remain stationary in the downcomer and gas bubbles in the circulating regime. In this paper a numerical modelling method was presented for gas-liquid flow in airlift reactors under different bubble recirculation regimes. Gas-liquid flow was modelled using the Eulerian two-fluid equations, and extra user defined subroutines were incorporated to consider the complex physics, such as bubble induced turbulence and turbulent dispersion force. Some alternative correlations of drag coefficient were used to capture the bubble distributions in the riser and downcomer of the airlift reactor, with consideration of the interaction between bubbles. As using constant bubble size is hard to describe global characteristics of the flow in airlift reactors for three circulation regimes, a model including multiple bubble sizes was presented to get more accurate simulation results of gas holdup and water velocity. Also, the inhomogeneous MUSIG model was used, as an exploration, to compute the complex flow regimes. The MUSIG model is a population balance method to predict the bubble sizes, taking break-up and coalescence into account. The modelling method was applied to a laboratory internal loop airlift reactor, and the simulation results were compared with the experimental measurements of Simcik et al. (2011) for gas holdup and water velocity. The three bubble circulation regimes were observed from simulation figures. Reasonable agreement was obtained over a range of operating conditions, and an improvement was demonstrated using the proposed methods."

The discovery of two new fields, Van, in East Texas, and Darst Creek, in the Balcones fault zone, is the outstanding development in 1929. The first six months was one of the most inactive periods in the history of East Texas. Five of the interior salt domes, which had been so eagerly sought as a result of the Humble Oil & Refining Co.&apos;s strike on the Boggy Creek dome in 1927, were drilled with discouraging results, and the Boggy Creek field itself had fallen far short of expectations. Kelsey, a structure of considerable magnitude and extent in Upshur County, was equally disappointing; the Amerada Petroleum Corpn.&apos;s initial test on this structure was dry. The situation improved in the latter half of the year. On Oct. 13, 1929, the Pure Oil Co. discovered the Van field. This gained for East Texas a permanent place in point of future potential production. There was a similar reaction in the Balcones fault zone. The Salt Flats (Bruner) field, the important discovery of 1928, proved its rating as a second Luling, but on account of repeated failures to extend the productive zone, wildcatting during the first half of 1929 in the Luling district was dilatory. In July, however, Darst Creek, a third fault-line field of majori mportance producing from Edwards limestone (Lower Cretaceous), was discovered. Retarded as development in this field has been by various attempts at proration, interest in the Balcones fault zone fields centered on Darst Creek as the year 1929 drew to a close. Development in East Texas Fields Discovered during 1929 Van.—The discovery well, Jarman No. 1 of the Pure Oil Co., is near the town of Van in the southeastern part of Van Zandt County, Texas. It is 55 miles northeast of the Powell field in Navarro County and 45 miles west of north from the Boggy Creek field in Cherokee and Anderson counties. Canada's only economic high-swelling bentonite deposit is mined in Wilcox, Saskatchewan, by A vonlea Mineral Industries Limited. The bentonite resulted from devitrified and altered volcanic ash released during the Laramide Orogeny. Volcanic ash was deposited in a pre-Cretaceous basin that was formed by salt solution collapse structures. Sedimentary rocks in the Wilcox area belong to the Snakebite Member of the Upper Cretaceous Bearpaw Formation. Bentonite beds are 61 cm, 46 cm and 30 cm thick; these are separated by 365 cm and 182 cm of shale respectively. Saskatchewan bentonite is used primarily in the oil well industry.
