produce attractive and consequently more salable products. It would seem, however, that if solder and babbitt were cast in closed molds, just as good practical results would be obtained by the user, without his being able to give preference to solders of unnecessarily higher grade on account of their appearance. It would be hopeless for any one. manufacturer of solder to undertake a change of this kind, but if all manufacturers of solder agreed upon it, they would be able, in my opinion, to get the users of solder to take, and to approve by their practical tests, metals containing less tin than they have been accustomed to. The same is true with regard to babbitt metals. An illustration of how, in the use of an alloy, appearance sometimes is deceptive, is to be found in the case of what may be called intermediate grades of babbitt. I am thoroughly convinced that high-tin or high-lead babbitts are better than those containing both lead and tin with relatively high percentages of each. A high-tin babbitt should not contain more than about 10 per cent. of lead, and a high-lead babbitt should not contain more than 10 per cent. of tin, unless the percentage of antimony can be correspondingly increased. The intermediate babbitts, such as those that contain from 30 to 70 per cent. of lead or tin, may give nice appearing castings that flow easily, but they have not the serviceability of the high-lead or high-tin babbitts. Their hardness diminishes very rapidly as the temperature rises, and they have a relatively low softening point due to the eutectic components present. The Cadmium Supply of the united States* C. E. Preliminary to any campaign for such substitution, particularly for enforced substitution, the possible supply of cadmium should be determined as closely as possible; for that reason the statistical inquiry of which this paper embodies the results was undertaken. Production Cadmium is marketed in two forms, as metallic cadmium, in sticks or bars, and as cadmium sulfide, the pigment. The metal has found its greatest field of use in this country as a component of an easily fusible alloy that is used in automatic fire extinguishers. "This new tool can be used as a quick guide f or the assessment of the potential economic wealth of any risky capital project. It does provide an unambiguous recommendation of the type ""go or no go"" to the decision-maker simply by comparing two different ratios profit/investment. One ratio determines the minimum value required to at least break even while the other measures a probable value based on the asymptotic theory of statistical extremes.Its application is briefly illustrated by means of an underground gold mine extension project, an oil sands mine project and a polymetallic open pit project.Once a favourable recommendation has been obtained then a detailed ""cash flow after taxes"" analysis can be carried out for the project.IntroductionMany tools are used in financial decision-making such as the payback period, the discounted cash flow, the internal rate of return and the wealth growth rate (Berry , 1971).These tools are useful and meaningful in evaluating normal projects closely related to regular business where the number of assumptions made is usually very small and where the cost of capita! is usually selected as a discount rate or a hurdle value. In situations where a significant number of assumptions have to be made,two problems can emerge, namely:I. the risk involved is underestimated leading to a potential financial disaster; or2. a good opportunity is lost because the approach used in evaluating the project is too conservative.Each assumption has its own degree of uncertainty and it is well known that combining uncertainties together can lead to a total uncertainty of critical proportion. The easiest way to account for risk is to increase the discount rate or the hurdle value, but this approach alone is quite subjective and can easily lead to the problems described above."

The US minerals industry, as well we know, has been hit hard by the recent recession and is faced with what is projected to be a slow recovery. Even so, there was an underlying feeling of optimism at American Mining Congress' International Mining Show in Las Vegas, NV, Oct 11-14. More than 25,000 people attended during a particularly rough financial year, dispelling fears that attendance would dip sharply below 1978's 30,000 plus tally. The equipment expositionheld every four years-was the largest show of its kind this year in the Western Hemisphere in terms of exhibit space, providing an extensive view of mining-related equipment. In addition to the nearly 700 exhibits occupying more than 445 hm2 (11 acres), 20 technical sessions were held covering topics ranging from minerals availability and the state of the mining industries to communications, computers, and accounting. Government officials were well represented, with six US senators and five US representatives participating in various convention functions. Sen. Paul Laxalt (R-NV) was the keynote speaker at the welcoming luncheon. Other senators involved in the show included Howard W. Cannon (D-NV), Pete V. Domenici (R-NM), James A. McClure (R-ID), Frank H. Murkowski (R-AK), and Steven D. Symms (R-ID). Representatives on the program were Joseph M. Gaydos (D-PA), Guy Vander Jagt (R-MI), Don Young (R-AK), Jim Santini (D-NV), and Ceil Heftel (D-HI). There were also many international vistors at the show, including exhibitors from Australia, Austria, Canada, England, Finland, Sweden, South Africa, and West Germany. Equipment Highlights Equipment and services featured at the exposition ranged from aerial mapping to wire rope. Aisle space alone between exhibits exceeded 8 km (5 miles). And the companies represented ranged from small businesses to large corporations. Some of the company products described here are representative of the many exhibitors in attendance. Atlas Copco's extensive display of rock drilling and tunnel and shaft boring equipment featured its Boomer H-201, the newest addition to its line of underground drifting rigs; the ROC 306, a new track-mounted, high pressure down-the-hole drill rig; a new hydraulic surface crawler drill, the ROC 712H, designed for small and medium-size holes in quarries and small open-pit mines; a computerized analysis system, CARE (see page 1570), designed to project productivity and operating costs for various mining operations; several electro-hydraulic loaders, including the new rail bound LM E60 and LM E80, and two Hagg-loaders-the 7HR and 10HR-that use two digging arms to rake and guide muck; a mechanized blasthole charging system; rock bolting equipment and its new Swellex roof bolting method; Sandvik Coromant drill steel and bits; and its new Jarva R200 raise boring machine.

Measurements of the rate of decomposition of austenite at constant temperature are commonly represented by plotting the percentage transformed on linear coordinates against time on either a linear or a logarithmic scale, a method that yields a curve that in shape resembles an integral sign (Fig. 1). A graph of this kind is not always convenient because extrapolation to the beginning or end of the transformation, or even intebrpolation, may be uncertain unless there are a large number of observations, which seldom happens; furthermore, the degree of consistency of a set of measurements is difficult to judge from such a curve. It is desirable therefore to find some mode of plotting, or even better to find a standard variety of graph paper, that gives a straight line instead of the integral shape. The straight line has many advantages; the number of readings required to fix the position of the curve is greatly reduced, interpolatiorr is easy and rapid, extrapolation can be carried out with greater confidence and, finally, the consistency of the measurements is readily estimated from the scatter of the points. The last advantage is particularly valuable when the data are obtained by direct microscopic examination alone, because they are influenced by the skill of the observer in estimating the relative size of areas, possibly also by undetected inhomogeneity of the specimen. A search for ways of representing the observations as a straight line yielded two methods which are described in this paper. The paper also includes an account of some interesting relations brought to light in applying these methods to the available experimental data. Usually the best way to derive such a method of plotting is to base it on established principles of chemistry and physics, as has been done, for example, for the temperature variation of the equilibrium constant of a chemical reaction. But so little is known of the mechanism of the decomposition of austenite, and so little is available in the way of well established background for changes of this kind, that it is simpler to rely upon purely empirical means. ONLY the acute phase of the smelter fume problem is new. The problem itself is older than the Christian era. While both lead and copper were mined and crudely smelted ; on: 3,000 years ago, it was not until the Roman occupation of the Iberian Peninsula and the British Isles, which occurred but shortly before the beginning of the Christian era, that there was any evidence of smelting operations on a scale sufficiently large to permit a fume problem. Around Huelva, Spain, are found more than 30 million tons of slag from lead smelting conducted there by the Romans. Pliny tells us that more than 20,000 slaves were employed in the Iberian mines. Extensive mining and smelting by the Romans in England and Wales were coincident with the Iberian proceedings. These metallurgical operations were upon a sufficiently large scale to produce marked results both upon the surrounding country and the smelter workers, but, as they were those of a conqueror upon conquered soil, conducted by slaves, imperial Rome failed to recognize that such a thing as a smoke problem did or could arise, and whatever fume question there may have been at that .time remained a question only to those who had no chance to answer any phase of it. The smelting operations of the Romans extended over about 400 years, and little is "recorded of lead and copper smelting from that time until the 16th century. From the revival beginning at this period up to the present century, the growth of smelting has been comparatively gradual. In Great Britain, smelting was conducted almost wholly in localities where metallurgical operations were of paramount importance, and the communities that grew up in smelter localities were due to and dependent upon the mines and smelters. This fact had much to do with the comparative freedom of British smelting from burdensome fume litigation and legislation. To a lesser degree these conditions applied to the German operations which, when coupled with the further fact that most of the early German operations were to a greater or less degree fiscal workings of Prussia, Saxony and Brunswick-Hanover; accounts for

Recently there has been a considerable revival of interest in the effects of the various elements commonly added to brass for the purpose of increasing its strength. For many years the work of Guillet2 alone gave reliable information in this regard. Even today his determinations of the coefficients of equivalence of the various elements relative to zinc in brass are those universally employed in industry. This is so because these coefficients have stood the test of time—their substantial correctness has been proved in almost universal practice. It is not our intention to discuss here these coefficients or their use. Rather do we wish to emphasize the need for further systernatic studies of the mechanical properties of the ternary systems of copper, zinc, and other individual elements. Since Guillet published the results of his first investigations Millington, 16 Smalley33 and Thiband 45 have added somewhat to our information. In general they have confirmed the findings of Guillet, which may be stated in the following rather general terms: 1. The addition of aluminum to the 70:30 and 60:40 brasses progressively increases their hardness and strength and reduces their ductility and resistance to shock. 2. The addition of small amounts of iron to a 60:40 brass improves its strength without affecting its ductility. 3. The addition of small amounts of manganese to a 60:40 brass causes a progressive increase in its strength and reduction in its ductility. A considerable amount of information has been amassed in regard to the effect of nickel on brass (9, 22, 41) which it is unnecessary to refer to here, in view of the scope of this paper. The situation in regard to these alloys in 1926 was very clearly stated by an anonymous writer,47 in The Metallurgist of February of that year, whose remarks were so to the point that they are well worth quoting: It will he seen that there are still large fields remaining to be studied in each of these systems (those of the aluminum, iron, nickel and manganese brasses) before our knowledge is adequate. Arc-melted and electron-beam melted tantalum in the cold-worked and the recrystallized conditions showed high strength, good tensile ductility, and excellent notch toughness down to 321°F. Arc-melted material, containing moderate amounts of interstitials, possessed better short-time strength than higher purity electron-beam melted material up to 2000°F. Cold-working substantially strengthened arc-melted tantalum, whereas electron-beam melted material exhibited a low work-hardening rate and possessed better formability characteristics. With identical compositions and microstructures, the mechanical properties of melted tantalum and uacuum-sintered tantalum should be similar. TANTALUM metal usage is increasing rapidly in a number of applications. The outstanding chemical corrosion resistance of tantalum accounts for its applications in chemical processing equipment for severe service conditions and for surgical uses in the medical field. The largest present requirements for tantalum are in the electronics industry, where its special properties are useful in capacitors. The high melting point (5425°F) and inherent ductility of tantalum also suggest that tantalum and tantalum-base alloys might offer an excellent combination of high strength at very high temperatures and good fabri-cability. Pure tantalum has been used in significant amounts in parts requiring high-temperature strength, such as heating elements, reflectors, and heat shields in high-vacuum high-temperature furnaces and in electronic tubes. A few very promising tantalum-base alloys have been developed and are being investigated extensively. The possibilities for tantalum as a high-temperature structural material, either unalloyed or alloyed, will become better defined when more extensive mechanical property data are known. pughl measured the tensile properties of vacuum-sintered tantalum in sheet form for the temperature range of 78" to 1500°K (-321' to 2240°F), and Bechtold reported data obtained at low temperatures.' Drennen3 determined creep and stress-rupture properties of both vacuum-sintered and arc-melted tantalum sheet at 1200 °F. Some additional data on the mechanical properties of tantalum at temperatures up to 5000 °F have been summarized elsewhere.4'5 It is probable that large structural shapes of tantalum, either unalloyed or alloyed, can most readily be produced from ingots prepared by melting. Consequently, the present investigation was undertaken to determine more extensive short-time mechanical properties of tantalum metal consolidated by melting. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Melting and Fabrication—Two tantalum ingots were utilized in this study to obtain information on the effect of interstitial elements on mechanical properties. Both ingots were melted from Union Carbide Metals Co. tantalum dendrites.

"The creep properties of tin-based lead-free solders Sn3.0AgO.5Cu and SnO.7CuO.1Ni and lead solders 10Sn90Pb and 50Sn50Pb were investigated at temperatures between 298 K and 398 K. The creep-rupture time decreases with increasing initial stress and temperature. The analysis of the solder creep curves uses the Omega method. The creep rate E is expressed by following formula: 1n ? = 1n ?0 + O?, where ?0 and O are experimentally determined. The parameter Eo increases with increasing initial stress and temperature. The activation energy for ?0 is 108 kJ/mol for Sn3.0Ag0.5Cu and 85 kJ/mol for SnO.7CuO.INi. These energies suggest that the lattice diffusion of tin is dominant. The energy of 1OSn90Pb is 37 kJ/mol and that of 50Sn50Pb is 67 kJ/mol. The creep-rupture time is calculated using the parameters, ?0 and O. The calculated creep-rupture time is in good agreement with the measured creep-rupture time.IntroductionLead-free solders are replacing traditional tin-lead solders as part of a major trend toward protecting the earth's environment. However, tin-lead solders are currently needed for a high temperature range. Since creep is the main deformation mechanism in solder joints, understanding a constitutive model for creep and examining creep data for solders are important for reliability analysis of solder joints. A steady-state creep equation is generally used for solders [1,2], and it supposes that the secondary-, or minimum-, creep rate occupies the entire creep life. However, secondary creep accounts for only about 15 % to 40 % of the entire creep life for solders. Thus, the equation may not represent the entire creep life."

In determining the layout or combination of unit operations to be utilized in a modem preparation plant, several factors must be taken into account. Among these are the washability data, size consist data, the particular market or markets for the coal, the mining method used, the degree to which the coal must be prepared, expected fluctuations in raw coal and markets, and the overall economics of the process. In addition, there are the health and safety aspects of coal utilization and preparation. Chapter 1 of this book discusses the characteristics of coal and coal markets, while Chapter 2 deals with the design of preparation plants. Once the unit operations for a particular plant have been decided upon, these arrangement may be depicted by using a flowsheet. A coal preparation plant flowsheet is a two-dimensional graphical representation of the sequence of operations, the arrangement of machinery, and the flow of materials for a particular coal cleaning operation. The flowsheet is usually qualitative in nature, becoming more quantitative as material balances, water balances, numbers and sizes of various pieces of equipment, etc. are added. The usual convention in preparing a flowsheet is to show the feed flowing from left to right, starting at the top left and working down as in an all-gravity process. Various symbols are used for each unit operation as depicted on a flowsheet, and Fig. 14-37 is a compilation of the commonly accepted international standard symbols for each unit operation. Fig. 14-38 through Fig. 14-40 are flowsheets of various coal cleaning processes as published in the January 1976 issue of Coal Age. Each process has its own unique features which, among others, depend upon the coal being cleaned, the coal market, and the mining operation. Fig. 14-38, for example, is a flow diagram for a jig plant preparing steam coal from two strip mines located a few miles apart. In addition to the jig washer, cyclones are used to treat the finer size coal. Fig. 14-39 is a flowsheet of a heavy media plant using a heavy media washer for + %-in. (+6.3-mm) coal, froth flotation for -28 Tyler mesh (-0.6 mm) material, and dewatering phase units (dwp) for Y, in. x 28 Tyler mesh (6.3 x 0.6-mm) cleaning of steam coal. In addition, thermal drying, centrifuge drying, and the use of vacuum disk filters and thickeners for dewatering are depicted. Fig. 14-40 is a flowsheet of a plant producing metallurgical coal. In addition to the heavy media and froth flotation circuits, a tabling circuit is also employed. These flowsheets are intended to give the reader an example of how the various unit operations for coal cleaning may be linked together. Figs. 14-41 and 14-42 illustrate the conversion of block diagrams into an IS0 prescribed set of symbols.

The Jeffrey operation of Canadian Johns -Manville Co. , Ltd., at Asbestos, Quebec, is considered to be the world's largest asbestos mine. It accounts for approximately 37% of Canadian production of chysotile asbestos and about 13% of world production. Rated capacity is over 600,000 stpy (540,000 mtpy) of fiber, of which well over 90% is exported to the United States and seventy other countries. During the early 1970's the company completed a five-year modernization and expansion program which included the installation of a unique 72 in. by 93 in. gyratory crusher to handle the extremely blocky serpentinized peridotite ore. Because of the large diameter of this crusher the top ring of the shell was made in two halves which were bolted together. Hundred-ton trucks dump from two sides of the crusher into the 200 st (180 mt) dump pocket which is equipped with dust collecting ducts in the walls of the other two sides. The installation was designed to accommodate the eventual use of 200 -ton trucks. Crushed ore at a. size of 7 ½ in. (191 mm) falls into a uniquely designed crushed ore pocket equipped with three sloping steel sides and one vertical side, which make it totally live. Infrared heaters installed in back of the hopper sides prevent the ore from sticking to the steel. Another interesting feature is an eccentric removal bridge which is permanently mounted inside the crushed ore pocket. The two halves of the bridge are let down by electric winches to form a platform on which the eccentric cart travels and from where maintenance is done. Level indications in the crushed ore pocket are by radioactive indicators. Under the crushed ore pocket is a 72 in. by 28 ft (1.83 m by 8.5 m) apron feeder which operates at 7. 2 to 50 fpm (2. 3 to 15. 3 mpm). Crushed ore is discharged to a picking belt for tramp removal. A crossbelt magnetic separator is also mounted over this belt. Permanently mounted belt reels are also situated over the picking belt to facilitate the changing of this unit. A 60 in. (1. 52 m) wide takeaway belt then elevates the crushed ore to t.he surface facilities. Instead of discharging to a crushed ore stockpile, the takeaway conveyor delivers the ore to a 300-ton distribution bin. The ore is then screened and secondary crushed; and the plus ¾ in. (19 m) is "stored in a 3,000 ton bin while the minus ¾ in. is dried and then sent to storage. This system of directly screening primary crushed ore is similar to that used at both the Endako molybdenum and Gibraltar copper operations in British Columbia. While it would seem connecting processing equipment directly to a primary crusher would have an adverse effect on the crusher availability, the 94% of scheduled time this crusher

Education in Australia now has to respond to a very wide political and policy agenda. The political emphasis is upon increasing participation and retention rates with a view to greater graduation rates in `high-tech' disciplines. There is an implied linkage between `education' and `economic well-being'. Our argument is that equalitarianism in education tends towards mediocrity. In this context many Geoscience educators view the future with pessimism. The argument is that science has been `sold short' and needs revitalising. We contend that Geoscience coursework should be a feature of both secondary and tertiary education in Australia. To this end we propose six policy initiatives to increase the content of Geoscience in education programmes.

Several attempts have been made to account for the fact that grains in a fully recrystallized metal will coarsen on annealmg. Two fundamentally different hypotheses have been advanced, with several variations of each. One school considers that the cause of grain growth is the surface energy of the grain boundary. The theory of Jeffriesl that grain size and grain size contrast control growth is an example. The second school considers the primary cause to be a difference in the lattice energy on either side of the grain boundary. The more perfect grains are considered to grow at the expense of their less perfect neighbors, with a decrease in free energy, and a consequent increase in the stability of the system. Burgers2 presents the case for the strain or lattice imperfection theory of grain growth quite completely. The latter theory is attractive, since there is no doubt that differences in lattice energy or lattice perfection can cause grain boundary migration. A recrystallization nucleus grows for this reason as was beautifully demonstrated by van Arkel and Ploos van Amstel.³ Although it is generally stated that grain growth does not precede recrystallization, several workers4-5 have shown that small strains may induce a single crystal in an aggregate to grow, or at least may cause some grain boundary migration. The origin and nature of the imperfections that are considered to be responsible for normal grain growth have never been clearly described, but it is generally agreed that they are a consequence of the difficulty of atomic reorientation in the solid state, and that they do not seriously differ from the type of imperfection that can be introduced by mechanical deformation. An object of the present work was to determine whether the introduction of mechanical deformation would cause grain growth in a specimen which would not otherwise show it under the conditions used. It was also planned to determine the effect of such deformation on the rate of growth in a specimen which would show growth in the unstrained condition. Recently Maddigan and Blank6 have indicated that slightly strained specimens of alpha brass can undergo considerable growth prior to recrystallization if annealed at low temperatures. French7 has reported that at deformations less than 17 pet it is very difficult to detect the beginning of recrystallization in the same material. Several attempts have been made to account for the fact that grains in a fully recrystallized metal will coarsen on annealmg. Two fundamentally different hypotheses have been advanced, with several variations of each. One school considers that the cause of grain growth is the surface energy of the grain boundary. The theory of Jeffriesl that grain size and grain size contrast control growth is an example. The second school considers the primary cause to be a difference in the lattice energy on either side of the grain boundary. The more perfect grains are considered to grow at the expense of their less perfect neighbors, with a decrease in free energy, and a consequent increase in the stability of the system. Burgers2 presents the case for the strain or lattice imperfection theory of grain growth quite completely. The latter theory is attractive, since there is no doubt that differences in lattice energy or lattice perfection can cause grain boundary migration. A recrystallization nucleus grows for this reason as was beautifully demonstrated by van Arkel and Ploos van Amstel.³ Although it is generally stated that grain growth does not precede recrystallization, several workers4-5 have shown that small strains may induce a single crystal in an aggregate to grow, or at least may cause some grain boundary migration. The origin and nature of the imperfections that are considered to be responsible for normal grain growth have never been clearly described, but it is generally agreed that they are a consequence of the difficulty of atomic reorientation in the solid state, and that they do not seriously differ from the type of imperfection that can be introduced by mechanical deformation. An object of the present work was to determine whether the introduction of mechanical deformation would cause grain growth in a specimen which would not otherwise show it under the conditions used. It was also planned to determine the effect of such deformation on the rate of growth in a specimen which would show growth in the unstrained condition. Recently Maddigan and Blank6 have indicated that slightly strained specimens of alpha brass can undergo considerable growth prior to recrystallization if annealed at low temperatures. French7 has reported that at deformations less than 17 pet it is very difficult to detect the beginning of recrystallization in the same material. Agnico-Eagle Mines Ltd. comprises a Gold Division at Joutel, Quebec, and a Silver Division at Cobalt, Ontario. In 1979 the Silver Division milled 41,700 mt (46,000 st) of ore at a recovered grade of 139 g per mt (4.06 oz per st) for a production of 5,816 kg (187,000 oz) of silver. The 100 -year -old mining, camp of Cobalt has long been noted for its high-grade silver ores, and now seems to be on the threshold of being revived with several companies operating in the area. In 1979, the Gold Division milled at the rate of 27,200 mt per month (30,000 st) and processed 333,000 mt (367,000 st) at a grade of 6.58 g per mt (0.192 oz per st) with a mill recovery of 91.670 to produce 2,013 kg (64,700 oz) of gold. The average total cost per ton milled was $22.10 per mt ($20.05 per st) which was $3.66 per g ($1 13.90 per 0s). These figures make Agnico-Eagle one of the lowest cost producers in North America. Gold occurrence in the Joutel ore is fine-grained and contained within sulfide facies composed mainly of pyrite with minor pyrrhotite. Two underground mining methods are employed with long hole stoping accounting for about 75% of the ore mined and shrinkage stoping the remainder. Ore from underground is hoisted into a 545 mt (600 st) coarse ore bin from where it is conveyed to a 45 mt (50 st) surge bin ahead of the 10-51 Hydrocone crusher. Crushed ore is then screened to make a 13 mm (112 in.) product with the oversize being recrushed in a 7-60 Hydrocone. Mill feed is conveyed to two 900 mt (1,000 st) fine ore bins. The Hydrocones were installed as part of a new crushing plant in March of 1980 and have contributed substantially to an increase in mill capacity. Space has been left to install a third crusher in the future. The fine ore bins discharge to a 2.75 m by 3.66 m (9 ft by 12 ft) rod mill, followed by a 3. 7 m by 5.5 m (12 ft by 18 ft) ball mill in closed circuit with a Krebs 380 mm (15 in.) cyclone to produce a 7070 minus 37 micron (400 mesh) .flotation feed. This pulp is first treated in a 34 cu m (1, 200 cu ft) Maxwell flotation cell and then in an additional twelve 2.8 cu m (100 cu ft) cells. Combined flotation concentrates are reground to 9070 minus 37 microns (400 mesh) in a 1.8 m by 4.9 m (6 ft by 16 ft) ball mill in closed circuit with a single Krebs 254 mrn (10 in.) cyclone. Flotation tailings are sent to the tailings dam. Reground concentrates are then aerated with lime to a single Pachuca and thickened in a 16.75 m (55 ft) diameter thickener with the addition of diesel fuel to render any activated graphite inert to adsorption of

In the early fifties Professor Breckpot of the Louvain University in Belgium in collaboration with the Research Laboratory of Metallurgie Hoboken, discovered the possibility to separate nickel from cobalt sulfate solutions by a nickel sulfide depolarized cementation. This reaction, completed later with a zinc precipitation, was developed into purification processes for the Shituru and Luilu Gécamines cobalt plants in Zaíre. Due to increasing demand for higher quality products and the necessity of lowering the production costs, more laboratory and pilot plant investigations concerning the key parameters for the nickel and zinc sulfides precipitation were under- taken. Especially the relative stabilities of cobalt, nickel and zinc sulfides, precipitated with elemental sulfur or sodium hydrosulfide, were examined in relatlon with the pH and with the redox potential. These investigations have led to better plant practice and new development possibilities. The valorisation of the precipitated sulfides has also been considered.

Of late considerable experimental and theoretical interest has been shown in the rates of transformation from a single phase, usually a supercooled solid solution, into one or more phases. Such reactions may involve both diffusion and transformation of the major constituent, as in iron alloys, or it may simply involve diffusion, as in superstructure formation and in age-hardening systems. Most of the work has been confined to ferrous alloy1-9† although two investigations have been made on copper alloys10*". That such work may be of considerable practical importance has been demonstrated by Bain12, by the workers at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institut fur Eisen-for~chung'13, 14, and by the everyday use of precipitation and age-hardening principles15. Experiments in this country have generally followed Davenport and Bain's technique of rapid supercooling followed by isothermal treatment. In Germany16, 17 the work has been extended to the study of the influence of accurately controlled and measured rates of cooling. The work on steel indicates that there are two subcritical temperature ranges where reaction starts sooner after quenching and proceeds at a more rapid rate than at other temperatures. At suberitical temperatures above Ar" (temperature of martensite formation) where reaction is dependent upon atomic migration there is a period of time of which the length depends upon the alloy content and the temperature, before which no reaction has been detected. Davenport and Bain' find that different sorts of atoms in solid solution in gamma iron affect the length of this " prereaction" period differently, manganese probably being the most effective in lengthening it. It is very difficult to believe that nothing occurs within these "prereaction" regions, for if this were so there is no reason why any reaction at all should be observed.
