This paper examines the effect of cation type (i.e. NH4+, Na+ and K+) and anion type (i.e. SO42- and C1-) on the extraction of nickel during the pressure acid leaching of a Western Australian laterite ore. The results are compared with testwork conducted with other Western Australian nickel laterite ores and the possible process implications of adding an additive to a plant autoclave are considered. Addition of either (NH4)2SO4, Na2SO4 or K2SO4 increased both the nickel extraction and the acid consumption, provided that the level of additive was not too great. For example, the nickel extraction of 93% increased to above 96% in the presence of additives, but decreased to 94% when, for example, NH4 levels increased from 7 kg/t ore to 21 kg/t ore. The relative stability of the jarosite species formed when additives were present influenced the amount of jarosite in the residue and, hence, both the final free acidity and overall nickel extraction. The use of Cl- versus SO42- salts as additives had little effect on overall nickel extraction or overall free acid values, although the presence of SO42- additives appeared to enhance nickel extraction kinetics over the first 60 minutes of the reaction. In contrast, manganese extraction was enhanced by the presence of Cl- additives.

Sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) is one of the most common reagents used in the froth flotation process, in which it is an efficient dispersant as well as a powerful gangue minerals depressant. Due to its high affinity with a lot of minerals, mostly silicates, it adsorbs on their surfaces and prevents the adsorption of the collectors, maintaining them hydrophilic. Hence, Na2SiO3 is widely used in the flotation separation of rare earth minerals, zinc minerals, iron minerals, scheelite, fluorite, apatite, and many other minerals. For decades, authors have demonstrated higher efficiency of Na2SiO3 when it is used in combination with sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), a common pH regulator. Among many well-known depressants, this system presented the best efficiency for many ores, including the Tabuaço scheelitebearing skarn studied herein. However, the mechanisms resulting in these strong positive synergistic effects are not well understood at the moment. Hence, the response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to this ore, considered as a case study, to optimize the depressing conditions and to study deeply the flotation behavior of this system. Strong synergistic effects between the two reagents were exhibited by the RSM, mostly affecting the scheelite, fluorite, and calcium-bearing silicates recoveries. This was attributed to surface carbonation of the minerals by Na2CO3, subsequently leading to a better depression by Na2SiO3. Overall, a 1:1 ratio between the two reagents displayed the best results in terms of WO3 grade and recovery. To gain understanding in the molecular mechanisms responsible for the aforementioned synergistic effects, FTIR studies were combined with state-of-the-art molecular modelling (Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics at 300 K) on fluorite, an archetype of calcium minerals. Iron-free titanium oxycarbonitride (TiOxCyNz) is a promising feedstock for production of titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) at low temperatures. In this study, the effects of leaching variables such as temperature, time, particle size of staring material and concentration of the leaching solutions were evaluated on iron removal from nitrided Malaysian ilmenite by Becher process. The nitrided ilmenite was prepared by isothermal reduction with graphite at 1200 °C for 3 h in H2-N2 atmosphere. The aerated leaching experiments were conducted at 50–90 °C with addition of 0.3–2.0 wt% of NH4Cl catalyst. The highest extent of iron removal (XFe) was obtained at about 96.2% for the sample leached at 90 °C for 7 h with 2.0 wt% NH4Cl. The iron concentrate and titanium oxycarbonitride product were characterized by ICP-OES, XRD, XRF and SEM-EDX analyses. The results indicated that the aeration leaching process was a successful route to prepare low-iron titanium oxycarbonitride.

MECHANIZATION is being developed to some extent in every coal field in the United States and it is rather difficult to say which State or section of the country has made the greatest advancement. Statistics now being compiled for 1928 will show the tonnage mined, the amount of equipment used in each of the coal-producing States, and the comparative tonnages and percentages of total tonnage mined in each of these States, and will reveal which field is making the greatest advancement as far as quantity of production is concerned. However, while the tonnage figures are of great importance there-are other phases of coal-mine mechanization, such as the types of equipment, the mining methods and coal bed conditions, which are of equal interest. The change from hand-mining practices in all of the various operations from the face to the railroad cars is, perhaps, more indicative than any other one thing of the real progress being made.

Introduction The property of Pioneer Gold Mines of B. C., Limited, is located in the Lillooet mining district of British Columbia, on Cadwallader creek, 54 miles distant by motor road from Shalalth, a station on the Pacific Great Eastern railway. Milling by the present Company was commenced in 1924, a small amalgamation plant, consisting of a crusher, Bryan mill, and plates being operated until 1928. Tailing from this plant was impounded and later treated in the 100-ton continuous counter-current decantation cyanide plant which was erected during 1927-28 and placed in operation during May of 1928. A second cyanide plant, employing continuous counter-current decantation, having a nominal capacity of 200 tons, has been erected during the past few months and was put into operation during September of the present year. The ultimate capacity of the combined units of the present mill has not been determined, but it is expected to be much in excess of the rated capacity. The Ore The ore, as received at the mill, consists chiefly of quartz carrying free gold, with small amounts of pyrite, arsenopyrite, and pyrrhotite in evidence, though probably amounting to less than one per cent of the total. Some gold is very closely associated with the sulphides. The country rock is a basic igneous rock, probably an augite diorite. Near the vein it is highly altered to sericite, which slimes readily on grinding, and does not settle very well. The quartz is of two types, clear and ribbon. In the latter, the ribbons, which are not much thicker than paper, consist of shattered sulphides. In crushing this ribbon quartz, breakage is often along the streaks, exposing these shattered faces to advantage in subsequent treatment. While gold is the metal for which the ore is mined, some silver is also present and is paid for by the mint. It is, however, unimportant from a commercial viewpoint. From the standpoint of crushing and grinding, the ore might be termed 'medium 'hard'.

"As deposits of high-grade base metal sulphides become depleted, attention must be focused on the treatment of complex sulphides, which contain significant fractions of precious metals such as gold and silver. Acid pressure oxidation is a promising process for these materials and the recovery of silver and gold will improve the economy of the process. Gold can be recovered from the oxidised residues, however, silver is incorporated into the jarosite specie and the cyanidation of the resulting residue yields very low recovery.Pressure oxidation of various complex sulphides was carried out at 110-150°C in sulphate media with additions of potassium iodide under conditions similar to industrial autoclaving. The resulting residues were subjected to cyanidation. High recovery of silver, up to 98%, was achieved because its incorporation into lead-hydronium jarosite during the pressure oxidation was minimised, while its deportment into the cyanide-soluble silver iodide was favoured. Silver recovery decreased slightly at high temperatures (140° and 150°C) because of the enhanced stability and kinetics of lead-hydronium jarosite, but this could be overcome by increasing acidity and iodide concentration of the autoclave slurry."

Recently, titanium and its alloys have been the materials of choice for the liner and internal components of autoclaves used to extract Ni and Co from laterite ores. There have been many corrosion incidents ranging from localized attacks due to scale formation or welding, to damage caused by pockets of concentrated acid. Most of the literature focuses on methods to avoid the corrosion altogether. Little has been published to increase awareness of the chemistry at these conditions. For this paper, a literature review of the thermodynamics of titanium was undertaken to decipher the slew of information available. E-pH diagrams were constructed from select data and compared with the results of electrochemical experiments. Since nickel laterite leaching takes place in sulphuric acid, and in many cases chloride concentrations are very high, the Ti-H2O, Ti-Cl--H2O and Ti-SO4---H2O systems were considered.

THIS apparatus was designed primarily to meet the demand for a quick, efficient stopping to seal off the burning area temporarily during a mine fire, but it can be used in any circumstance where an immediate brattice is required for ventilation control. In using the old style brattice, mine-rescue workers have found it difficult, in smoke-laden drifts and stopes, to erect an effective stopping with wooden frame and canvas. Stulls must first be cut to the proper length, the canvas tacked in place, and the numerous irregularities of the walls and back must be caulked. This operation requires the employment of axes, saws, and hammers, which cannot easily and safely be handled in dense smoke. The extraction of nickel and cobalt from low-grade greek laterites by sulfuric acid leaching has been studied. Batch and continuous mini-plant atmospheric leaching as well as pressure leaching techniques were employed. Atmospheric leaching at temperatures as high as 95 OC generally resulted in low Ni extractions (up to 82%), high acid consumption (650-850 kg/t ore or 80-100 kg/kg Ni) and high Fe co-dissolution (30%). Pressure leaching at 260 OC increased Ni extraction to over 98%, with minimal Fe co-dissolution (2.5%); acid consumption was 300 kg/t ore (31 kg/kg Ni). Detailed experimental results and conceptual flow sheets for atmospheric and pressure leaching are presented.

There is a great deal of interest in how the industry can be more effective – and efficient – with these processes. In particular, many mining companies are looking towards digital technologies to improve precision mining practices; that is, the targeted identification and separation of valuable ore from waste during the mining process. The difficulties inherent in the production of alumina by the formation of potassium alum and its subsequent thermal dehydration and decomposition have been overcome , to a large extent , in a process developed at the Boulder City Station of the Bureau of Mines . This process is applicable to the reserves of alunite known to occur in several Western States and , possibly , to certain clay and low-grade bauxite deposits known to exist in this country . The operations sequence of the process is shown in the flow sheet (fig . 1) . Only those steps included within the heavy line are considered in this report . Four different procedures for dehydration of alum were investigated ; ( 1 ) Spray drying , ( 2 ) rotary - kiln drying , ( 3 ) dry grinding in a thermal ball mill , and ( 4 ) dehydration in the vertical- column flash dehydrator . Based upon fuel requirements and other practical considerations , the vertical- column dehydrator , or some modification of its operating principle , offers the botter possibility for commercial use .

Cortez Gold Mines, the United States' third largest primary producer of gold, commenced continuous operations on January 10, 1969. The decision to proceed to production was made in March of 1968 and construction of the mill and stripping operations for the pit began in April and July, respectively. Anomalous conditions on the slope of Mt. Tenabo along the Roberts Mountain thrust fault zone were discovered by the U.S.G.S. while conducting geochemical surveys in the old Cortez silver district. Following the discovery of gold an intensive program of drilling was organized. Drilling outlined an orebody with 3.5 million tons of ore averaging 0.28 ounces of gold per ton. It was on the basis of this reserve that a 1700 t. p.d. cyanide plant was designed. Needless to say, with such a limited ore reserve, economies in design and construction would have to be observed. Cortez Gold Mines is a joint venture with American Exploration & Mining Co., The Bunker Hill Company, Vernon F. Taylor, Jr., and Webb Resources, Inc. , as partners. American Exploration & Mining Co. is the operating partner.

This paper describing the mining methods of the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods and costs in various mining districts of the United States. The story of mining at Inspiration is of particular interest because, after 127,812,000 tons of low-grade copper ore were successfully mined, the mining method was changed from block caving to open-pit. As the open pit became deeper, many features of the former block-caving operation that were exposed elucidated concepts of the mechanics of caving that previously had been assumed but not observed. The conversion to open-pit mining was accomplished by unique combinations of equipment and the introduction of ingenious engineering and operating practices that have extended the expected life of the mine for many years.

The removal of rock blockages in mining operations has long been a risky undertaking, especially in high overhead conditions. Moreover, the assessment of where to put charges and the placement of them has been difficult due to the lack of visibility and safe access to the area. Traditionally, wedging long poles with explosives on them to keep the operator at a relatively safe distance has been the tried and true method of attempting to remove the blockages. Unfortunately, this is not a perfect system as it usually takes several attempts to remove the blockage. Each successive attempt results in even more dangerous conditions for workers and/or damage to the mine due to the successively larger amounts of explosives used until the hang-up finally comes down.Over the years, different ideas have been proposed to improve this process and reduce the inherent safety risks. Some of the technologies that have been trialled include projectiles fired at the hang-up; large, cumbersome arms; and massive amounts of explosives, each of which come with their own inherent safety risks that result in dangerous situations for miners and the mine.After gaining a thorough understanding of the process, Penguin Automated Systems Inc has developed a robotic system that is capable of working in a rock blockage safely. The idea combines the latest in telerobotics technology with 3D scanning and underground geospatial positioning. The hang-up removal is performed by scanning the inside of the hang-up to rapidly develop a geospatially placed 3D model for the operator to use. The 3D model is detailed enough that the operator can attempt to pick the ‘keystone’. A blasting engineer or the operator can then determine the exact position where the explosive charge should be placed in the 3D model and thus at the actual hang-up. The operator, controlling the robotic arm, uses the 3D virtual reality model of the robot system and the actual drawpoint information model to display the location information, the arm can then reach into the hang-up to position the charge using the kinematic model of the robot system. The 3D model is used to provide views inside the hang-up so that the operator can move the arm safely and precisely. This process allows the operator to place the charge (using the 3D representation of the drawpoint) from a long distance away. As the process continues, the end of the arm drills the rock and precisely loads the explosives. The robot then returns the blasting cable to the command station, which is located in a truck at a safe distance from the blockage.This paper will review the development of the system and present the results to date.CITATION:Baiden, G, 2016.
