Experiments in the bolting of a mine roof were commenced at Elrington Colliery on the South Maitland Coal Field early in 1949, following the appearance of an article in the American publication, "Coal Mine Modernisation Year Book" 1948. Prior to this, although bolting had not been used in the maintenance of satisfactory roof conditions, the principle of roof bolt anchorage had been illustrated in instances such as the hanging of a trolley locomotive power wire using an expanding shell type of bolt anchorage, or the insertion of an eye bolt with a split and wedge, as used to suspend a rope block over a winze being sunk in a metalliferous mine.The experiments at Elrington Colliery were the first efforts in this country to supplement the work of timber supports under a mine roof with systematic placement of roof bolts.Following the series of experiments at Elrington, full scale bolting was commenced at that Colliery in a trackless mobile section in April, 1950.The obvious success of the system at Elrington indicated that it might also be a success in the support of weak roof strata immediately overlying the workable section of the Victoria Tunnel Seam at John Darling Colliery.The system was commenced at John Darling Colliery in April, 1951, in one mechanical section on the Victoria Tunnel Seam, and the scope was gradually widened until by December, 1952, ail'six mechanical units then operating on this seam were working under bolted roofs.

MANY different methods are used for transporting coal from the working face to the tipple. The common methods are animal haulage, locomotive haulage, conveyor systems, and combinations of these three, supplemented, at times, by the miner pushing his own car. Haulage may also be classified into gathering and main line. Gathering haulage is the collecting of loaded cars to a point whence they are hauled to the tipple. In this there is perhaps more lost-time than on the main line because there are .more units in the operation to be synchronized. Also, conditions on the gathering haul- age, such as bad track, poor timbering, insufficient motive power, etc., cause delays; usually these are corrected on the main-line haulage.

"Many manganese ores contain from 0.1 to several percent cobalt. If such ores arc used for the production of ferromanganese, the cobalt is lost; on the other hand, if they are used for the production of electrolytic manganese, the cobalt can be recovered during the purification of the electrolyte.The production of cobalt in the United States is insignificant compared to the amount consumed, most of which is imported from the Belgian Congo. Cobalt-bearing manganese ores may therefore constitute an important reserve of cobalt in times of emergency. Moreover, the combined value of manganese and cobalt in some ores may be sufficient to warrant the recovery of both metals by the electrolytic manganese process, whereas the recovery of either manganese or cobalt alone might not be economically feasible.In view of the potential importance of manganese ores as a source of cobalt, a survey has boon made of the cobalt content of manganese ores. Most of the data have been obtained from analyses made in the Bureau of Mines, but valuable data have also been obtained from publications of the Geological Survey, various State publications, and other sources. Unfortunately, most published analyses of manganese ores do not include cobalt determinations; when such analyses were fairly detailed, but did not include cobalt, it was presumed that cobalt was not present in significant quantity.Information on the cobalt content of domestic manganese ores is given in table 1. Ores containing 0.1 percent or more cobalt are listed in table 2, and the districts in which such ores occur are shown in figure 1. Most of the known cobalt-bearing manganese ores occur in the southeastern part of the United States. A group of deposits in central Arizona and a few scattered deposits in other States also' contain cobalt."

The difficulty in fine particle flotation has been attributed, among other things, to a low bubble-particle collision efficiency. Many technologies have been developed which aim at increasing bubble-particle collision efficiency, either by generating micro bubbles or by enlarging particle sizes. However, commercial applications of these technologies are limited. Over the last five years COREM has been actively testing fine particle froth flotation technologies with the objective of commercialisation. Several fine particle flotation technologies, such as dissolved air flotation, electro-flotation, floc flotation, selective flocculation-flotation and carrier flotation, were tested on both single minerals and ore samples in order to identify the reasons that prevented these technologies from being used on a commercial scale. It was found that the two most noticeable factors that prevented the successful application of these technologies were: Mechanical entrainment of fine gangue minerals. This was a general problem in fine particle flotation, but was aggravated by these technologies that either generated micro bubbles or enlarged the sizes of hydrophobic particles. Oxidation of (sulfide) minerals that resulted in hydrophilic oxidation product coatings. The oxidised fine particles could not be recovered by these fine particle flotation technologies effectively. Solutions to the two problems, ie gangue entrainment and fine particle oxidation, were proposed and tested. It seems that polymeric depressants with both depression and flocculation functions could significantly reduce gangue entrainment, and hydrophilic surfaces of oxidised fine particles could be modified by high intensity conditioning or controlled sulfidisation, thus increasing the recoveries of fine valuable minerals. The improved fine valuable particle flotation and reduced fine gangue entrainment along with fine particle flotation technologies resulted in much improved flotation separation of fine particles.

As an advanced method of rock engineering construction safety monitoring, microseismic monitoring technology can monitor the micro-fracture of rock masses within an effective range, and then perform forecast analysis of rockburst, cracking, falling blocks and other disasters. Although the application of microseismic monitoring technology has become more mature, how to improve its application efficiency remains to be further studied. At present, artificial intelligence has been extensively developed, and the use of intelligent algorithms to improve the efficiency of rockburst forecast can provide a valuable reference for the safe construction of underground engineering. To this end, this paper proposes a microseismic multi-parameter rockburst early warning model based on dynamic Bayesian networks. First, the sensitivity of microseismic source parameters to rockburst forecast is analyzed based on microseismic monitoring data and actual rockburst information of a hydropower station. Second, the main seismic source parameters and their data are selected and imported into a dynamic Bayesian network for learning to obtain the rockburst forecast model. The model is confirmed in its self-validation and K times cross-validation, and the receiver operating characteristic curve of the model is also analyzed, it is found that the area under the curve is close to 1, indicating that the model has good accuracy. Finally, the analysis of the influence strength of the parent and child nodes in the model reveals that the moment magnitude and source scale are the most sensitive parameters, which can be used as an important reference for rockburst forecast.

The current status of the heavy and light rare-earth elements outside China is reviewed. New suppliers of the light rare-earth elements are Lynas (Australia/Malaysia) and Molycorp (USA), which are anticipated to process 11 000 and up to 10 000 t/y, respectively, and the most advanced heavy rare-earth elements project is Avalon's Nechalacho project at Thor Lake, Northwest Territories, Canada. U3O8 Corp has potential rare-earth elements production, e.g. ytrrium and neodymium, from its Berlin deposit in Colombia and Namibia Rare Earth's Lofdal project (Area 4) has potential to produce an average of 1 500 t/y of separated rare-earth oxides. With regard to the three historical producers, India has some small-scale production, Brazil has been a small-volume producer and has potential for new heavy rare-earth elements production, while South Africa has no current production

The optimum cut-off grade policy maximizes the net present value (NPV) of an open pit mining operation subject to the mining, processing, and refining capacity constraints. The traditional approaches to cut-off grade determination ignore the escalation of the economic parameters such as metal price and operating costs during life of an operation, and consequently lead to unrealistically higher values of the objective function. Further, the NPV of a mining operation declines due to the depletion of the available reserves, causing a decline in the optimum cut-off grade, i.e. higher cut-off grades in the early years of an operation and lower cut-off grades during the later years. Hence, low grade material mined in the earlier years may be stockpiled for processing during later years to offset the effect of escalating economic parameters on NPV. This paper demonstrates the combined impact of introducing economic parameters, escalation and stockpiling options into the cut-off grade optimization model. The model promises an enhancement in NPV as illustrated in a case study incorporating practical aspects of an open pit mining operation.

"INTRODUCTION Use of sensor technology applied to the gravimetric beneficiation is intended for the selective preconcentration or separation of various minerals. Sensor Based Sorting (SBS) uses sensors to identify the particles and separate them by a mechanical process (flap) or pneumatic ejection valves (Wotruba et al. 2014). The principle of the SBS technology to separate mineral particles consists of three phases which cover feed,detection and separation. (killmann, 2009 Apud nienhaus et al. 2014). The applicability of the technique in an early stage of beneficiation enables free particles and poor grade to be a part of the process. The mass of tailings to be processed can be removed at the initial stage to save energy, water and equipment maintenance (Wotruba et al. 2014). Lindner (2010) suggested that the use of SBS technology would only will be possible if there exsists an electromagnetic interaction in all the wave spectra interacting with the solid ore. The interaction of electromagnetic waves depends directly on the characteristics of the material. The material receives a spectrum of electromagnetic waves by irradiation and this results in a reduced wavelength with differing types radiation such as fluorescence, reflection, remission, absorption, transmission and transmission. The frequency of the wave spectrum varies between 1000 and 1020Hz, illustrated by the data in Figure 1, which shows that each type of sensor emits a wavelength inversely proportional to the frequency ranging from 10-11pm to 104km, and the frequency that varies between EHz 103 and 1020kHz. The difference between the electromagnetic spectrum variations can only be visible to the human eye at wavelengths with intervals between 380nm and 780nm (Wotruba et al. 2014). One of the main advantages of operating with imaging sensors is the versatility of the images which can take on zero, one, two or three dimensions shown below as a point, a line, an area or a spatial image, as illustrated in Figure 2. According to Schubert (1988), to separate a mineral particle it is necessary to follow the characteristics of mineralogy, physics and chemistry with or without use of water. The use of new technologies can help reduce operating costs and improve utilization of mineral resources."

Manganese ore fines cannot be added to the submerged arc furnace directly as they will prevent even gas flow through the burden. Low gas permeability in the burden will lower the degree of pre-reduction of ore subsequently increase the carbon and energy consumption of the process. In order to utilize manganese ore fines in the furnace, they are typically agglomerated into sinter. In this work, the melting and reduction properties of Gabonese sinter and Gabonese ore have been investigated in pilot scale experiments. Two experiments were conducted, one with 100% sinter as manganese source and one with 50/50 sinter and ore. Lime was used to achieve a charge basicity of 0.72 in both experiments. The composition of slag samples from the excavation of the furnace was established using EPMA(WDS), and the composition of the tapped slag and metal was found using XRF. It was found that while the coke-bed size would determine the tapped slag composition, the melting behavior of the Mn source would determine the mixing with lime.

"A partially-stabilized zirconia powder was prepared by metalorganic precipitation process from technical-grade zirconium oxychloride and the effluent of an acrylic acid plant. The effluent contained low molecular weight carboxylic acids, i. e., acrylic acid and acetic acid. The· developed process is based on the selective precipitation of acrylic acid at suitable pH values by the addition of zirconium oxychloride to the effluent. The resulting precipitate is a precursor that can yield a pure, ultrafine, and partially-stabilized zirconia powder. The evolution of formation of the partially-stabilized zirconia in the present process was investigated using thermal analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction technique. Environmental, technological and cost advantages will make the present process feasible for manufacturing advanced zirconia ceramics.IntroductionIn recent years the superior mechanical, thermal, electrical and chemical properties of stabilized zirconia have become the focus of growing scientific and technological interest, and hence resulted in various structural and functional applications. Environmentally assisted cracks in linepipe steels are initiated either as a result of stresses in combination with environmental effects, as in stress corrosion cracking (SCC), or as a result of trapped hydrogen in the steel, as in hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC). To understand better the mechanism of the crack initiation process, key metallurgical and environmental elements that can affect the cracking phenomena were investigated and are reviewed in this paper. The complexity of both cracking phenomena results from the dependence of SCC and HIC on multiple metallurgical, mechanical, and environmental parameters that may all influence both crack initiation and propagation; e.g., composition, microstructure and non-metallic inclusions in the steel, applied stress, water chemistry in the field, and ionic concentrations in the groundwater near the pipe surface to name a few for SCC. In addition, for HIC phenomena, one can add the concentration of H2S in the fluids transported in the pipe as well as concentration of CO2, pH, etc. In this paper, cracking of linepipe steels is analyzed critically, with particular attention to the crack initiation process. The paper is divided into two parts: The first part covers SCC and the second covers HIC.

A large-scale work scheduling algorithm has been developed in the Mine Management Support System (MMSS) for assigning workers to prioritized jobs on a shift basis. This study basically concerned the formulation of a reliable mathematical programming model to handle the problem, the achievement of an efficient solution of the model, and the implementation of the algorithm to the worker assignment problems of a large underground coal mine. The results showed that the work scheduling algorithm can make optimal assignments efficiently. It is believed it has potential significance in improving manpower utilization and can offer great help to coal mine managers in making efficient manpower allocations.

"Pyrolyzed carbons are generally known as good microwave absorbers and their dielectric properties still remain to be fully explored. In the present study the dielectric properties and dielectric polarization-relaxation phenomenon of a typical activated carbon was investigated. The experimental results indicate the complex permittivity is highly dependent on temperature and frequency. The decrease of permittivity with increasing temperature from room temperature to ~100 °C is probably ascribed to the release of the water vapor adsorbed on the surface of activated carbon, and the variations of permittivity with temperatures between 100 °C and 450 °C in the frequency range of 300 MHz to 3000 MHz are mainly attributed to the decreased relaxation time of dielectric polarization.IntroductionPyrolyzed carbons have been identified as excellent microwave absorbers owing to their high dielectric and electrical loss under microwave irradiations. Among them, activated carbon continues to attract more and more attention from researchers. Due to its special physical properties, the production, modification and regeneration of activated carbon with the assistance of microwave have been widely studied over the last few decades [1-6]. However, only few attempts have been applied to explore the dielectric properties of such materials due to the complexity and variability of their organic precursors and activation processes [7,8]. In order to shed a light on this problem, a typical sample, Norit® A Supra USP powdered activated carbon, was adopted to perform dielectric characterization, which may provide useful information for its wide application in the fields of purification, energy (hydrogen) storage and so on."

The present communication reports the results obtained by applying different concentration methods, at laboratory level, to the black sands from Estado Bolivar, Venezuela, with the aim of obtaining an adequate ilmenitic concentrate for the subsequent chlorination process. Sizing analysis was performed and plasma emission spectroscopy method was used to determine the chemical composition. It was found that from the two hydrogravimetric methods used, the Humphrey spirals is much more effective than Wilfley tables, leading to a 85% recovery. The most convenient particle size group for these concentration methods was the one corresponding to ASTM 40-140 mesh. When magnetic concentration was applied to the concentrate, obtained as a product from Humphrey spiral, a recovery of ilmenite more than 90% was obtained in the first step. It has been shown that the ore would respond to the separation techniques employed, giving individual minerals: ilmenite, zircon and silica as concentration products.

Gold has been demonstrated as a possible catalyst for oxidation reactions. Some evidence for a possible promotion effect of platinum has also been recorded. The influence of platinum as promoter for Au/?-Al2O3 prepared via anionic ion-exchange for the oxidation of glycerol was investigated in a batch reactor at 60°C. It is inferred that the addition of platinum reduces the catalytic activity and the rate of deactivation, resulting in an overall higher final conversion of glycerol with increasing platinum loading. The addition of platinum to the catalyst favours the formation of the desired product, glyceric acid.

The scope of this project was to research, develop and eventually produce a personal occupational hygiene and safety exposure monitor system to assist in recording and analysing various stress factors that could affect the health, wellness and safety of employees, i.e. that could result in injury or ill health of workers, create stress build-up within individual workers that could negatively affect worker alertness and safety, and, may even result in permanent disability or death. Utilized systems at the time were all reactive, whereas the DOHEMS (Proactive Digital Occupational Hygiene and Safety Exposure Monitoring) System enabled the measurement of exposure (and associated risk) in a proactive manner via real-time exposure and digitized recordings. The idea of the development was to create a unit that is so cost effective, small and light that every worker can use a system on a daily basis. The development will eventually replace current, bulky and expensive monitoring equipment. The device must be a portable battery operated device and monitor the immediate working environment by periodic sampling for vibration, noise, toxic gasses (NO/NOX/CO/VOC, etc.), body temperature and heart rate. The samples must be time and date stamped, utilizing a real-time clock (RTC) synchronized with the closest regional secondary time source and related to synchronized real-time video captured samples. These samples are then recorded onto a rugged non volatile storage device with the capacity to store a vast number of samples covering the entire working shift of eight (8) hours plus. The system has been fitted with a clear visual local alarm indication system, indicating any excessive exposures or stresses, for the worker?s supervisor to respond to. This system allows for a pro-active approach. The system is also a wireless system (to the external environment) so as to not affect the mobility of an employee and flameproof to allow for use in explosive environments. The G2 real-time expert system, a commercial product since 1988, is widely deployed in process, manufacturing and other industries. A number of innovative applications are installed or under development in the mining and metallurgical industries. These include: ? A chemical reagent control system for a mineral concentrator, at a mining company; ? A supervisory control system for a product dryer, at a surface coal mine ? A training system for equipment operators, at a steel mill; ? A scheduling system for furnaces at a hot rolling mill; ? A simulation system for mining operations; ? Several graduate-level research projects in materials handling at a university Realized and projected benefits will be discussed. In addition certain applications installed or under development in other industries will be proposed as applicable in mining and metallurgy. For example, applications for the management of vehicular traffic may find use in mining and shipping.

"Design of effective mine water treatment plants depends on the ability to reliably predict treatment outcomes, but systems with multiple chemical and physical treatment processes and recycle loops can be difficult to model. GoldPHREEQC is a modeling framework that integrates mass and flow routing capabilities of GoldSim software and water quality calculations provided by PHREEQC, and is well-suited to modeling parameters of interest in the mining industry, especially metals and sulfate. Physical processes such as membrane separation and greensand filtration are modeled by defining mass rejections for each parameter and flow routing based on vendor projections and bench- or pilot-scale equipment testing. GoldPHREEQC models chemical precipitation processes such as HDS metals removal and gypsum precipitation by (1) performing surface-aging and solubility calculations in PHREEQC and (2) using the GoldSim framework to direct supernatant and precipitate to subsequent process steps. Users can apply this modeling framework to predict effluent water quality, chemical requirements, sludge production, and required equipment capacity to support design, troubleshooting, and cost estimating. Electron diffraction and electron microscopy were used to determine the unit cell parameters of garnierite [(Ni,Mg)3 Si2O5 (OH)4] and to examine its crystal habit. Bundles of ribbons, many less than 200 A. in cross section, make up the bulk specimen of the garnierite Electron diffraction revealed the unit cell to be monoclinic. Unit cell parameters were: a, 5.33 A,; b, 9.23 A.; c, 14.96 A.; and ß, 94°441.
