It has been a universal observation that rich grades of ores and minerals are getting depleted, simultaneously the demands for civilization are ever increasing coupled with occurrence of poor grades of ores and minerals posing a problem to the processing engineers. At the same time, the cost of mining and milling are increasing, creating a situation where the management has to handle and process low grade ores at an economic level keeping environmental stipulations and control to be safeguarded which has been an additional cost for the management to comply with.

"The Niobec concentrator rejects up to /5% of the Nb as slimes (-10u.m). The recovery of Nb from these slimes by column flotation is being studied. An essential condition for selective flotation is slimes dispersion. A particle size analyzer, the Sedigraph 5000D, was used to monitor dispersion in plant waters with combinations of organic and inorganic dispersants and flotation reagents. Flotation reagents were particularly detrimental to dispersion with sodium silicate. The best dispersion conditions were selected for column flotation tests. These tests revealed that reagent combination had a pronounced effect on froth stability. Careful frother selection achieved good froth stability under conditions of good dispersion. Plant water increased the required dispersant concentration causing mineral depression.IntroductionSlimes (-10 u.m) rejected at Niobec contain up to 15070 of the over-all Nb content . Recovery of Nb from these slimes would significantly increase over-all recovery. A suggested recovery route involves two phases: (1) carbonate flotation (to remove most of the carbonates) depressing silicates and pyrochlore (as currently done at Niobec); and (2) selective (direct) pyrochlore flotation from the silicates. Phase 2 has been addressed and several routes to achieve selective flotation are available. Phase I was attempted with the selective reagent scheme used at Niobec but a considerable amount of pyrochlore floated with the carbonates due to poor slimes dispersion."

"Superhydrophobic thin films were fabricated on aluminum alloy substrates by chemical etching followed by passivation with organic acid molecules; (ii) electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of functionalized ZnO nanoparticles and (iii) electrodeposition of organic-inorganic composite materials. The physical and compositional analyses of the deposited thin films were characterized by SEM, FTIR, XRD as well as contact angle goniometer. The contact angle and surface roughness of the superhydrophobic surfaces prepared by the chemical etching process were found to be 156° and 2.29 µm, (ii) by the EPD process were found to be 155° and 4.54 µm and (iii) by the electrodeposition process were found to be 159° and 7.11 µm, respectively.The corrosion properties were analyzed with both polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in NaCl aqueous solutions. The results demonstrate that the superhydrophobic thin films on aluminum alloy substrates display better anti-corrosion behavior than the as-received aluminum substrate. The comparison of results pertaining to the compositional and corrosion properties of these thin films on aluminum will be discussed in this work.INTRODUCTIONSuperhydrophobicity is defined as a surface property which provides non-wetting characteristics with a water contact angle larger than 150°. It is observed that the creation of certain micro-nanoroughness structures promotes the entrapment of air in the spaces of the rough surface morphology. In addition, lowering the surface energy helps to reduce the affinity of water drops to the surface, thereby weakening the water-surface interaction. Recently, various fabrication methods for superhydrophobic surfaces have been explored (Sarkar, 2010, Huang, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015a, 2015b), such as the sol-gel process (Brassard, 2011), plasma treatment (Marchand, 2013), chemical vapor deposition (Zheng, 2009), chemical etching (Saleema, 2011), electrodeposition (Ying, 2011) and electrophoretic deposition (EPD; Huang et al., 2015b)."

For research and test data to serve a useful purpose, it is essential that it be derived from some known standard test procedure that allows for comparative analysis as well as independent replication and verification. Fan performance data provided by manufacturers is not absolute, and is influenced by the geometry of the test installation. For these reasons, fan test standards have been prepared in order to establish a clearly defined test procedure that allows for comparison of different fan designs, and also allows for the independent verification of test data. Internationally recognized Standards such as BS848, ISO5801, and AMCA 210 etc. are highly prescriptive, and precisely specify test duct configurations, measurement procedures, measurement planes and instrumentation to be used. Provided the laboratory tests are conducted strictly in accordance with the relevant Standard, the performance data will accurately reflect fan performance within the appropriate tolerances for efficiency, pressure and flow when tested in the defined configuration. Major differences in performance exist between a fan tested in accordance with a Fan Test Standard, and an identical fan installed in a mine ventilation system. The aerodynamic performance of any fan will be influenced by the quality of the fan manufacture, the flow system within which it is operating, the location of measurement planes, and the system stability. The flow distributions present in a standardized Laboratory test are unlikely to be repeated in mine ventilation systems, and this will also disadvantage fan performance. Unless the fan supplier takes all of these influences into account, there will an inevitable reduction in fan aerodynamic performance, and the end user will experience a shortfall in expected flow through the mine. The effect on fan performance can range from minor inconvenience to catastrophic fan failure resulting in major rectification costs and significant loss of mine production.

The Cu-Au flotation cleaning circuit at Freeport Indonesia consists of three stages: two flotation column stages, in series, followed by one stage of mechanical cells. Concentrate from both column stages is combined as final concentrate. The mechanical cell stage has two parallel rows of seven Wemco 500's. The Wemco concentrate is recycled to feed of the second column stage and Wemco tails report to final tailings. This paper examines cleaner circuit performance, focusing on size-by-size performance of the individual stages and the individual mineral groups -copper sulfides, gold and in sol minerals. The recovery mechanisms of insol minerals are examined.

This paper reports on an investigation undertaken to determine the exhaust gas temperatures of operating underground mining equipment. The effectiveness of platinum catalytic purifiers is discussed. From exhaust temperatures, it is concluded that LHD engines are highly loaded, haulage truck engines are moderately loaded and utility vehicle engines are lightly loaded.

Much amount of sludge is produced from the wastewater treatments in surface finishing industry. There are many problems for the abandonment of the sludge because of the high water content and heavy metals included. It is often observed that hexavalent chromium, which is toxic, is generated in the course of heat treatments of the sludge for reducing its amount by dispersing water. In this study, conditions of the sludge calcinations for reducing water contents have been examined. Maximum hexavalent chromium generation was observed in the temperature range around 773 K, at which most of the crystallization water decomposed from the sludge. When the heating temperature became higher than 1173 K, the amount of the hexavalent chromium extracted from the calcined sludge became as low as 10 mg/kg sludge. When the sludge was heated with iron oxides, FeO or Fe203, iron ferrite has been synthesized which may be used as a magnetic material. The amounts of hexavalent chromium generated in the heat treatment with iron oxides were not much different from those without iron oxides.

This study was intended to simulate the blasting model using notched-hole with numerical approach. Numerical analysis approach was applied to compare and evaluate the blasting model using notched-hole and circular hole. To implement non-linear dynamic blasting model, blasting analysis was carried out with AUTODYN code. Behavior of two models was compared and evaluated using AUTODYN and visual analysis and quantitative evaluation based on pressure and stress to verify the effect to induce the destruction territory to the specific direction when blasting with notched hole was attempted.

Auxiliary Equipment pumping systems to support primary, secondary and regrind grinding circuits will be the primary focus of this paper. Every grinding system is unique and requires special design considerations for proper application of pumps to transport mill discharge. To satisfy the majority of applications, a new series of pumps has been developed by Svedala, known as World Class Pumps. Selection of these newly developed pumps for each type of grinding circuit will be presented. Specific components of selection are materials of construction, piping system, classification method, material characteristics and slurry characteristics. Both horizontal and vertical pump applications will be reviewed with emphasis on rules of pump piping and sump design.

In 1983 the New South Wales (NSW) Government began to construct a 35 km freight rail line to provide additional rail capacity to Port Kembla in the Illawarra region, south of Sydney, through a direct connection between the Unanderra to Moss Vale line at Dombarton to the Main South rail line at Maldon in the Southern Highlands. The project area lies within the carefully managed Sydney Water catchment and is also underlain by previous coal mining activities.Construction of the line halted in 1988 prior to its completion after the NSW Government reassessed the demand case and found that the project was not as viable as originally forecast. However, by this stage the line was partially constructed, including the majority of civil earthworks, approach structures to the main river crossings and establishing the portals for the Avon tunnel as a precursor to major tunnelling works.In 2012, the Commonwealth Government funded Transport for NSW to undertake the necessary engineering and environmental preconstruction works. Most importantly here, the 1980s rail link was predicated upon the use of electrically powered locomotives, whereas the locomotive fleet in operation today in NSW is diesel powered. This fact has a significant impact upon the approach and development of the Avon tunnel section, as the diesel powered locomotives combined with the length and grade of the tunnel alignment produces a unique set of conditions requiring specialist engineering design and systems to ensure safe and functional operation of the railway through the tunnel section.Given the above, the Avon tunnel will need to be supported by a ventilation and smoke control design based on the heat rejection from the locomotive consist, consideration of ambient air quality compliance, comparison against in-tunnel air quality goals, and providing safety systems in line with the fire and life safety strategy it requires.This paper explores the current development of both the tunnel civil works responding to the geography, geology, rail functional requirements, as well as the tunnel ventilation systems being revised to suit the diesel locomotives.Further, this paper describes the importance of combining the design outcomes with the procurement methodology in order to achieve the project objectives, a functional outcome and value for money across the project life.CITATION:Baker, T and Bagis, A, 2014. "INTRODUCTION Accurate determination of carbon monoxide in concentrations ranging from 0.2 to about 0.5 percent by volume is troublesome, because such concentrations are too high for some analytical methods and too low for others. Methods that are sensitive to concentrations of carbon monoxide considerably less than 0.2 percent are approaching their upper limit of usefulness when applied to the analysis of samples containing 0.2 percent or more of carbon monoxide, and it may be necessary to resort to dilution of the sample with a known proportion of air, or otherwise modifying the analytical technique, to obtain satisfactory results. Such methods include the determination of carbon monoxide by reduction of heated iodine pentoxide 3/4/5/ by the ""Pyrotannic acid"" method 6/ and by the so-called ""phosphomolybdic acid"" method. 7/ The use of conventional gas-analysis equipment, such as the Orsat type, in the determination of carbon monoxide in concentrations ranging from 0.2 to 0.5 percent is not desirable, as possible analytical errors may be of about the same magnitude, thus producing results of little quantitative value.For several years prior to this publication, the Gas Analysis Laboratory of the Health Division of the Bureau of Mines has used a modification of the Haldane type 8/9/10/ gas-analysis apparatus for the determination, by absorption in a chemical reagent, of carbon monoxide in low concentrations that are not readily determined by other methods. The method is applicable also to the determination of higher concentrations. As the procedure has proved successful and has been adopted by others, this report was prepared to describe the method and to present results of analyses obtained with it."

In the pursuit of commercial solutions for environmental issues, individual problems are often identified, considered and resolved in isolation from other environmental matters and always at the end of the cycle û after the problem has been created. Inter-relationships are neglected if they are not seen to obviously impact on a specific problem and the issue at hand is plucked from the environmental landscape and dealt with in total isolation to all else. In a Zero Waste approach to environmental matters, all outputs are pursued as potential inputs. Industrial processes are viewed as a variation on natureÆs theme and opportunity pursued above all else. When viewed from this perspective, industry appears to have forgotten its origins. It has forgotten that it is principally about people. The juggernaut of global trade has forgotten that it is a small part of a big landscape and that its principal participants, people, cannot exist without healthy soil. Commercial activity in all parts of the world relies heavily on the ability of agriculture to produce the necessary inputs for industrial production. The care and nurturing of our soils is fundamental, not only to the survival of humanity, but also to the economic systems that support that humanity and to the industry which profits by it. Actual levels of domestic recycling in many countries around the world seldom reflect the 90 plus per cent desire to recycle recorded in surveys conducted by local authorities in almost every country. If the desire to recycle is far removed from the end result, why is it that the systems provided are so ineffective? It is obvious that what we do need is a recycling system that both engages and rewards the participant and stimulates the innate desire to support the environment. A recent trial in New South Wales, Australia, demonstrated that by giving individual households credits for recycling organic wastes, not only will contamination levels fall dramatically, but increased yields, improved soil structure, improved land values, reduced fertiliser costs and increased water use efficiency give the farmer good economic reasons for purchasing and applying quality composted product. By underpinning and securing the agricultural community, we secure the future of industry. The æCity to SoilÆ project linked the economic on-farm benefits of compost use with reduced contamination through the provision of rewards paid for by the purchase of product by the farmer.

"1 AbstractThe production of alumina from bauxite using the Bayer process generates 0.7 to 2.0 ton of the residue known as red mud per ton of alumina. This material has no large scale current use and is usually stored. This paper shows that it can be used in a suspension with water as a gas effluent cleaner with high efficiency to remove SO2. It can substitute other materials currently used reducing the overall environmental impact and potentially reducing the cost of gas treatment.2 IntroductionThe production of millions of tons per year of alumina around the world generates from 0.7 to 2.0 ton of the residue known as red mud per ton of alumina. The vast majority of the red mud is stored in large sealed lakes. Due to the high reactivity this material is considered dangerous and currently there is no operating process capable of reuse all the material produced at any refinery. These lakes after filled of solid material eventually have the surface revegetated. In any cases they will remain as an environmental passive and need monitoring for decades. The search of industrial processes that combine the cleaning of gas effluents emission and reuse of these residues can contribute to the reduction of the overall impact of the alumina production process.The main objective of this work is to study the efficiency of the red mud as alternative raw material for the control of emissions of SO2 in combustion gases. Usually this is made through alkaline solutions of CaCO3 or NaOH in absorbing equipments like spray towers or packed column. This project main objective is to study the reaction of the SO2 with a suspension of red mud and water in order to obtain the basic parameters to design equipment capable of process this reaction on a pilot scale. With that goal compositions of red mud on spray were processed with flow of gas containing SO2 with concentration similar to the exhaust gases of the combustion process of the refineries."

Private equity (PE) firms are comparatively free of mandatory requirements for the level and scope of due diligence applied prior to making investment decisions in minerals projects when compared to listed entities, sovereign funds or financial institutions adopting the Equator Principles (Equator Principles Association, 2013). While this freedom allows for flexibility, agility and innovation in making investment decisions, it can also expose PE firms to material risks that may impact their ability to successfully list the projects or attract later financing.Financial institutions and investors with mandatory due diligence and disclosure standards may refrain from investment in or acquisition of a project if it fails to meet various performance requirements. There are many high-profile projects that have suffered significant write-downs on book value after acquisition because specific non-mining issues were not adequately assessed. Thus, a PE firm may be left with an asset that is difficult to divest and incapable of securing development finance.PE firms can manage this risk by being aware of the growth trend in the adoption of ‘international standards’ in addition to host nation standards and legislative requirements. This paper outlines key issues for PE firms to address to maximise the chances of obtaining funding or successfully taking an exploration or mining project through to listing or divestment. Chemical composition and the casting/rolling production routes determine the cost and properties of the wrought material. For example, the coarse-grained structure frequently associated with DC casting requires complex rolling schedules to refine the grain size. Hot forming (rolling/forging/extrusion) results in a strong crystallographic texture, which is responsible for the tension-compression strength asymmetry frequently exhibited by magnesium alloys. Understanding the influence of alloy composition on texture evolution during forming provides useful practical information to optimize industrial hot-forming technologies for magnesium alloys. In this study, a series of Mg-based alloys containing varying combinations of Al, Rare Earths, Zn, Ca, and Sr were subjected to identical casting and extrusion processes in order to isolate the effects of alloy composition on texture evolution. Textures were measured by neutron diffraction at the NRC Canadian Neutron Beam Centre. The ability of neutrons to penetrate deeply into materials allowed information to be retrieved from all regions of the bulk specimens without destructive and time-consuming sectioning operations, thereby providing true bulk texture data. {1010} , (0002), {1011}, and {1012} pole figures were generated for all of the as-processed alloys, from which Orientation Density Functions were obtained. The were then used to reconstruct the pole figures and to extract semi-quantitative texture data showing how the (0002) and {1010} planes align themselves with respect to the extrusion axis. It was found that varying the concentration of aluminum (3-4 wt%) and Rare Earths (2-3 wt%) in AE alloys had a weak effect on texture development. All of the alloys showed similar magnesium extrusion textures, in which the (0002) poles align themselves preferentially with the extrusion axis. The substitution of Sr for Rare Earths also did not have a significant impact on texture development. On the other hand, while the presence of small amounts of Zn and Rare Earths did not have a strong effect on texture development, alloys with higher concentrations of these alloying additions (in combination) showed an enhanced tendency for the {1010} poles to align themselves with the extrusion axis. The addition of Ca also enhanced the alignment of the {1010} poles with the extrusion axis. These textures can complicate further processing and introduce a significant anisotropy that could influence creep properties.

Texasgulf Inc. currently operates an open pit phosphate mine in the central coastal plain of North Carolina. The area of phosphate deposition lies within the Aurora Phosphate district which consists of an embayment which is in the center of the Neogene phosphate deposition. A variety of solid and liquid fertilizer products are produced at the Texasgulf complex. One of these products is known as North Carolina Natural Phosphate (NCNP). New potential for use of unacidulated natural phosphate, now exists in regions with acid soils due to the discovery of the findings from recent research, cost advantages, and moves to reduce chemical inputs.

A case study examining the procedures and financial benefits of introducing dump leaching to augment the Mt Gibson Gold Project CIP operations is discussed. Metallurgical testwork, followed by pilot dump leach operations, confirmed that gold recoveries of greater than 60 per cent could be achieved by dump leaching Mt Gibson laterite ore. Capital and operating costs were determined. Pit optimisation using the Whittle FOUR-D optimisation program calculated an optimum cutover grade between CIP and dump leaching for one orebody. The resultant recalculation of reserves based on CIP and dump leach operating costs showed that reserves for that orebody could be increased from 329 000 tonnes at 1.9 g/t An, to 1 488 000 tonnes at 1.2 gh An. NPV for the CIP only option of $1.4 m, was increased to $4.0 m for the combined CIP/dump leach option. This technique can be applied to existing gold projects and to new Developments.

(Cleveland Meeting, October, 1912.) ALMOST half a century has passed since the Siemens brothers, after tedious and costly experiments, finally began the manufacture of open-hearth steel. The furnace of that time was very small, having a hearth-capacity of from 3 to 4 tons, and we can appreciate the wonderful development that has taken place in those 50 years by the knowledge that to-day furnaces of 50 times the original capacity are in operation. As the new steel process assumed importance, and furnaces began to grow in number and in size, a question arose, to which no satisfactory answer has ever been given, and that was: ?What is the safe and economical limit of the open-hearth furnace?" Various stopping-places have been suggested, and 20, 30, 40, and 50 tons have each been advocated, but all such arbitrary restrictions have been passed, and 60 tons would probably represent the average furnace, although in a few instances from 70 to 80 tons are regularly tapped into one ladle. The furnaces which are the subject of the present paper have gone far beyond even these limits, and since, in my opinion, they mark another step in the progress of open-hearth steel, they will be considered fairly and frankly, in order that those to whom the matter may be of interest may be able to judge and form their own Conclusions. Short accounts of the work of these furnaces have appeared from time to time in various technical journals, of which the following is a brief résumé. These furnaces are the property of the Phoenix Iron Co., of Phoenixville, Pa., and their distinctive and important feature is, that they charge to twice the capacity of one ladle, and tap simultaneously into two ladles, with a device for controlling the flow into either. In this way the capacity of the furnace is not limited, as formerly, but heats of any size within the capacity of two ladles may be charged.
