The design of a rubble mound breakwater resting on a problematic seabed is quite challenging and expensive. In the present study, stage-wise construction of a typical section of the breakwater for a proposed port on the eastern coast of India is carried out. The major challenge envisaged in the design of breakwater is the subsoil strata which consists of soft clayey soil. As it is difficult to improve the soft clayey soil in the marine condition, construction stages are meticulously planned in such a way that consolidation takes place due to the preloading of breakwater, which in turn leads to the strength improvement without any special ground treatment. Thus, the breakwater is designed to be constructed in 7 stages. An initial geostatic analysis is carried out, followed by a plastic stress-strain analysis, consolidation analysis, and safety analysis for each stage, using finite element (FE) code PLAXIS. It is found from the FE analysis that due to the presence of the soft clayey soil, the critical slip circle was formed in the base. It was observed that the staged construction over a period of 2 years provides a sufficient increase in the factor of safety of above 1.5 at the various stages of construction. Hence, it was recommended to construct the breakwater with 7 stages over a period of 2 years.

Computer visualization can be employed in industry as an aid to the understanding of the complex interactions between variables encountered in production. The examples of ingot casting of rimming steel and that of hot rolling of low carbon steel strip are presented. Both processes are mathematically modeled, and their results are presented in a graphical way. Such models have been proven to be an asset in quality improvements and increase of productivity as the personnel involved get a better understanding of their job.

Many of you radio listeners have probably never seen a mine . You may be glad of it, but you should not forget that there is a vast army of men in this country who not only have to see mines , but have to work in them day by day in order that you may be supplied with many of the things you need. Specifically , nearly a million men work in the mines of the United States , 700,000 in the coal mines , 110,000 in the metal mines , 100,000 in other mines and quarries , and 75,000 in the oil and gas fields . On a stormy night , the average citizen is apt to think of the perils of the seaman . Particularly in the old days before steamships , many a prayer went up " God help the poor sailor on a night like this . " At the same time , the sailormen often expressed fear for the poor landlubber , exposed as he was to the danger of falling chimneys , swaying signboards , and uprooted trees . So with the miner . Many of you may pity him , for working underground in complete darkness except for feeble artificial lighting , mining coal or ore , drilling hard rock , handling explosives , and perhaps breathing vitiated air . On the other hand , on stormy days , with rain , snow or hail falling , and with the temperature low , or on hot bright days , I have often heard miners joke about the poor fellows who had to stay " on top, " and could not get " down below" where there was no wind , where no snow fell, where the temperature was unchanging , and where a man could have his own working place , arranged to suit himself , with little interference from meddlers and with no automobiles to dodge . So do not feel too sorry for the miner . He is quite apt to be a strong , healthy , hearty person , making pretty good wages , and fairly well contented with his lot .

Interviews of 48 miners who escaped underground coal mine fires revealed that none of them had ever, before that incident, worn their self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) either in training or in a real emergency. Consequently, they were ill-prepared to use this emergency breathing apparatus. One persistent problem stemmed from the fact that miners had no notion of breathing resistance, nor of the fact that it would get more difficult to breathe the longer they wore their device. As a result, many of those who were interviewed had simply removed their mouthpieces and breathed ambient air. This is obviously behavior that should be trained out of the workforce. Unfortunately, because of high costs and difficult logistics, miner training is unlikely to ever include donning and wearing an apparatus on a regular basis. In order to give workers a better idea of what to expect from their devices, therefore, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health researchers developed a tabletop (paper and pencil) simulation based upon actual predicaments evacuees had reported encountering. The simulation is designed to emphasize important points related to donning and wearing a self-contained self-rescuer in a mine fire escape, and, by doing so, to bring miners' expectations more in line with what their actual experiences would be. The simulation was field tested in six training classes at three different mining operations. In all, 99 individuals were involved in completing the exercise and rating its properties. In their ratings 88% of the respondents indicated they thought the scenario could definitely happen in real life, and over 80% agreed they had learned something new. From the field test data it was concluded that the simulation had authenticity and potential value as a teaching tool. The simulation was therefore used in a pre-test/post-test control group experiment to determine whether it led to improvements in miners' scores on a true-false test of their SCSR's functional capabilities and proper usage. Eighty-three miners were included in this part of the study. As expected, miners who had participated in the training exercise scored significantly higher on their post-test than miners who had not.

The strength of sinter could affect the permeability and CO gas utilization of blast furnace, and one of the main impacted factors of sinter strength is crack. With the widely use of vanadium-titanium sinter in China, the blast conditions of some blast furnaces became worse since the vanadium-titanium sinter has been added. However, there have little public research for this phenomenon. In this paper, the influence of titanium content on the sinter ore phase structure and crack were studied by DMRX polarizing microscope. In addition, the influence of basicity and oversintering on the sinter ore phase structure were also investigated. The observed results of vanadium-titanium sinter were compared with typical sinter in China, and the influence law of titanium content on the sinter ore crack was obtained.

"Vertical stirred mill is expected to upgrade the iron concentrate by further size reduced efficiently. The tests for fine grinding of iron ores from Baiyun Boyu iron ore, Baogang Goup, iron contained tails of Cu-Pb-Zn ore in Wanguo ore, Xiaoshalong iron ore in Qinghai were conducted in this paper. The data of appropriate grinding fineness, optimum grinding conditions and energy consumptions obtained from the test were used to select appropriate scale of the vertical stirred mill, optimize the parameters of the grinding process and upgrade the iron concentrate of the iron ore dressing plant or design the new ore dressing plant. Based on the laboratory tests, industrial system of regrinding and magnetic separation with vertical stirred mill as the regrinding mill in micro-fine grained iron concentrate upgrading has worked out very well. The grade of Fe in iron concentrates has increased to about 65.0% (by 4.0~6.5 point percent) when the iron concentrates were reground to designed fineness and the specific energy is 5.0~7.1kWh/t. The system of regrinding and magnetic separation is proven to be eco-efficient in iron concentrate upgrading."

WHAT are known as insulating firebrick are lightweight firebrick with low thermal conductivity designed primarily for use in direct contact with furnace gases. These are a recent development in the refractories industry, and are really an outgrowth of the type of insulating brick suitable for use behind refractory walls developed by the insulation manufacturers. To differentiate between these two types of brick, the manufacturers have recently agreed upon the use of the term "Insulating Firebrick" to apply to the type of brick suited for use in direct contact with furnace gases, and the term "Insulating Brick" for the type suitable for use behind refractory walls. Insulation was applied to steam pipes as far back as 1900. This was a low-temperature insulation, the most common type being magnesia blocks. The next development was applying insulation to the outside of furnace walls, a service which necessitated an insulating material of higher temperature resistance. Natural diatomaceous earth, both in the powdered and brick form, was used; this was efficient and is still used extensively for backing up refractory walls where the inner surface temperature of the insulation does not exceed 1600° F.

Stanstead granite has been investigated with respect to its dynamic compressive strength and its strain-rate dependency. A standard Split-Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) apparatus has been employed to generate strain rates of up to ~500/s through high-velocity impact. The diameters of the test samples were 19 mm, and tested under impact velocities up to ~20m/s. It is found that even within this limited range of strain rates, the dynamic compressive strength for the granite showed nearly a 100% increase in value compared to those obtained under static loading conditions (e.g. compressive strength of 394 MPa at a strain-rate of 600/s, compared to 215 MPa obtained under static loading). The details of the test are described in terms of incident, reflected and transmitted stress pulses, along with means to achieve stress equilibrium in the test samples under dynamic loading conditions. The advantage and drawback of the use of ‘pulse shaping’ techniques to achieve dynamic stress equilibrium are also detailed.

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a medical technique that produces three dimensional images of the body, commonly to aid diagnosis and treatment of tumours. PET has been developed by the University of Birmingham in order to track particles in an opaque system which is known as Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT). The object to be tracked is irradiated. As the radionuclide decays positrons are produced; when these collide with electrons a pair of concurrent parallel back-to-back gamma waves are emitted and detected, from which the position of the object can be calculated. Stirred media mills are used for particle size reduction. The mill is usually operated at high solids loading with grinding media and has a polyurethane or polyurethane-lined steel pot and is thus opaque. For this study grinding media has been directly irradiated and tracked using the PET camera during the grind. The stirred media mill can be divided into cells of equal volume known as voxels. The fraction of the total time the irradiated media spend in each voxel can be shown in an occupancy diagram. The mean velocity and kinetic energy of the media for each voxel are calculated and also plotted. In occupancy and kinetic energy plots colour indicates the value of the voxel, in dimensionless time and Joules respectively. The arrow in velocity plots shows direction and length of arrow indicates magnitude of the mean velocity for the voxel. From these diagrams and further data analysis a detailed understanding of the flow patterns, media behaviour and high energy areas of the mill can be developed. Variables considered were the tip speed of the impeller and density of the grinding media. It was found that the grinder has three distinct regions: above, at and below the impeller with each region having its own flow patterns and velocity and kinetic energy profiles. These are different for each variable and so are used to characterise the grind. Tip speed and density of the grinding media were shown to both affect the velocity of the media and the proportion of time spent in the each region of the grinder.

Turquoise Ridge is an underground gold mine located in the Potosi Mining District, approximately 64 km northeast of Winnemucca, Nevada. Turquoise Ridge Underground is accessed via two shafts and a system of internal ramps and utilizes underhand drift and fill mining methods with cemented rockfill. The mine also employs mechanical mining as well as sill benching as mining methods. Ground conditions at Turquoise Ridge Underground are poor, and the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) may be less than 20, or very poor, in ore headings. Current production rate is 2,700 tonnes of ore per day. Key challenges in increasing production levels and reducing costs are the development of sufficient stoping areas and the transition from top-cut development to undercut stoping. Completion of the infrastructure development in the North Zone is necessary to achieve and optimize higher production levels. The #3 Shaft project is well underway and is expected to be commissioned in mid. 2022. The shaft will drastically decrease the haulage requirements in the North Zone

"IntroductionThe Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC) located in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, in eastern Canada, was established in 1967. Its mandate at that time was to facilitate a phased downsizing of the coal industry and developing viable replacement industries. The oil crisis in the early 1970s changed CBDC’s mandate and focus was modified to increase coal production to support Nova Scotia Power Commission’s “off oil” policy for their power generators. In the late 1980s the mandate to develop viable replacement industries was eliminated and CBDC became primarily a coal mining company. CBDC presently operates two underground coal mines, Phalen Colliery and Prince Colliery, using a retreat longwall method of mining. Both mines operate beneath the Atlantic Ocean. CBDC also operates associated infrastructure — central workshops, a railroad, coal preparation plant, and international pier. The Need For Substantial ChangeOver the last few years, CBDC has been facing some challenging issues, including improving labour management relations and achieving financial self-sufficiency and profitability. Recent achievements with regard to human resource issues, especially in the areas of collective bargaining, absenteeism, and attendance, show noticeable improvements. All participants should be commended for successfully concluding the collective bargaining process with all four CBDC unions, CUPE; CAW; IAM&AW; and UMWA. However, although these changes are encouraging, even critical in the short term, they are not sufficient to ensure the long-term viability of the company. Market ForcesShort- and long-term financial realities are drawing the need for further substantive changes. The corporation has a mandate to achieve financial self-sufficiency by the year 1999. This goal can only be achieved through a combination of cost reductions and productivity gains, specifically, a reduction in the workforce of 658 and an increase in production of 800 000 tonnes annually. This increase in productivity requires CBDC to re-think the way it does things.In the longer term, CBDC faces even greater challenges. The energy market is becoming more competitive. The electrical utilities across Canada are anticipating deregulation and are positioning themselves for the resultant competition. As primary fuel supplier to Nova Scotia Power Inc. (NSPI), the corporation will have to become ever more competitive to stay in business."

Hydrocyclones are widely used in wet mineral classification applications and can be notoriously prone to wear. The methods currently used for quantifying hydrocyclone wear profiles are mostly twodimensional. In this paper it was attempted to quantify and monitor wear in three-dimensions, using a micro-CT scanner (Nikon XTH 225 ST). Hydrocyclone wear and, more specifically, spigot wear was investigated on a Multotec HC250 (Dc 250 mm, barrel diameter) hydrocyclone. The hydrocyclone is lined by a vulcanised natural rubber compound within a metal shell, with a thermosetting polyurethane spigot and vortex finder. Tests were conducted on the hydrocyclone in a pilot-scale recirculating test setup. The wear rate of the spigot was quantified by measuring the volume change within the spigot over 122 days in operation, using the micro-CT scanner. After 122 days in operation (recirculating feed materials) the wear in the hydrocyclone led to only a 13.67% loss of spigot volume. The relatively low wear rate could be related to the fact that material recirculation led to particle smoothing and a reduction in size, thereby decreasing the wear rate. This also shows the enormous influence that particle shape and size have on wear. The research was conducted with the support of Multotec, NECSA and the University of Pretoria. The emission of particulate material is one of the several parameters related to environmental control in mining operations near communities. Blasting is an event that generates and leaves a large amount of dust in suspension, which can cause discomfort to communities, generating complaints that can compromise the operational continuity of the mine. The proper management of these environmental impacts is a key factor to ensure a good relationship with the neighborhoods, making a responsible mining in harmony with the environment, giving sustainability to the mining business in the medium and long term. The main goal of this work is to present different techniques and technologies applied in a large-scale open pit mine in Brazil, with operations close to a community, to minimize the emissions of particulate material into the atmosphere. For this, different technical solutions were implemented. First, a non-conventional blasting technique was introduced that incorporates special charging and timing configurations, generating a first upper layer that serves as a blanket to contain a second, higher-energy lower layer. An optimal stemming was also defined in order to minimize ejections and maximize cratering, using the scaled depth of burial theory as well as video and fragmentation analysis. In addition, changes were made in the timing between decks (to guarantee a minimum time between layers) and between holes (changing the initiation point opposite to the free face). Finally, additional measures such as humidification of the bench, use of a wind vane to identify wind direction and the construction of a physical barrier between the mine and the community were implemented as additional mitigation measures. By applying the above techniques together, in some specific zones of the mine, it was possible to considerably reduce the ejections generated by blasting versus conventional blasting without the above measures, which was demonstrated in the field with dual blasts trials. Additionally, it was possible to achieve a vibration reduction in the community of ~30%. This work demonstrates how, by applying these technical solutions, it was possible to minimize the dust and vibrations generated by blasting allowing this operation to do sustainable mining

The mechanisms and kinetics of copper oxidation and reduction have been investigated in small scale thermal gravimetric experiments as well as in laboratory pilot scale, packed bed reactors. With blister copper flowing gravitationally down through a packed bed of ceramic particles, counter-current to low oxygen containing combustion gases, the rate of oxidation was found to be very high due to the large surface area created. Similarly, reduction by flowing copper through a packed bed of charcoal lead to rapid de-oxidation. Based on these laboratory measurements, fundamental rate data have been obtained. Modeling of industrial sized packed bed reactors using the laboratory results, opened up the possibilities of developing a new, very intensive, continuous process for copper fire refining. The developed mathematical model together with a computer process simulator, allowed for the design of the industrial-pilot installation to be built and tested at the ENAMI Paipote smelter in Chile.

Bentonites are clay materials composed principally of minerals in the montmorillonite group. Distinctive physical properties of the montmorillonite minerals are responsible for selected bentonite deposits having become the raw materials source of industrial clay products which are virtually essential to the maintenance of high production standards in the petroleum, foundry, taconite and other basic industries. These versatile materials have no suitable substitutes in either their major applications or in hundreds of speciality products, The economics of the bentonite mining industry follows closely the established pattern of other non-metallic raw materials. Aggressive competition, advanced technologies, progressive marketing techniques, substantial reserves, and vast unmeasured resources insure the continued supply of high quality bentonite to industry at bargain prices. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the geology and economics of bentonite deposits, summarize both major domestic mining districts and foreign deposits, and report significant results of research and development.

THE origin of the Mine-Rescue Service of the State of Illinois can be traced to two distinct sources, the work of the Rescue Station at Urbana and the Cherry disaster. During the early part of the year 1909, the Technologic Branch of the U. S. Geological Survey, now the Bureau of Mines, in connection with the Illinois Geological Survey and the College of Engineering of the University of Illinois, established at the University of Illinois, in Urbana, a branch rescue-station to supplement the work of the Pittsburg station of the Geological Survey. As a result of the work of training at the station in Urbana by R. Y. Williams, mining engineer, and James Webb, foreman of the Bureau of Mines, and the use of the helmets at several mine-accidents in the State of Illinois, . the people of the State were somewhat familiar with oxygen-helmets when the Cherry disaster occurred, in November, 1910. The oxygen-helmets were successfully used in connection with that disaster, and upon the recommendation of the Illinois Mining Investigation Commission, the Legislature of the State, assembled in special session during the winter of 1910, passed a bill appropriating $75,000 for the erection and maintenance of three rescue-stations, stipulating that they should be located in the northern, central, and southern parts of the State. The Act also provided that the stations should be in charge of a Commission of seven, two representing the United Mine Workers of Illinois, two the mine-operators, one the Federal Bureau of Mines, one the State mine-inspectors, and one the Department of Mining Engineering of the University of Illinois. "In light of the recurring spills and failures of conventional tailings disposal pond dams, a brief review of the Thickened Tailings Disposal (TTD) system is presented. It is shown that by the process of thickening the tailings to a heavy slurry prior to disposal, it is possible to create a self-supporting deposit of tailings and to eliminate the typical superimposed settling pond. These features, together with the ability to reclaim the disposal area even as mining continues, preclude an ecological disaster. IntroductionMine tailings spills are really not such rare occurrences. They have been happening on many continents, in many countries. Neither Canada nor the United States have been spared. In Ontario, the most recent spill occurred at a closed-down tailings disposal area in Matachewan, in 1991.Such continuing disasters could be avoided if a different approach were taken to the disposal of tailings wastes. The recent failures at the Los Frailes mine in Spain, the Omai mine in Guyana, and the Marcopper mine in the Philippines, will hopefully shake up the industry to consider other methods of disposal. The reason why the failure of a conventional tailings disposal dam is so environmentally disastrous is not the dam itself, but the fact that the dam retains a mass of very loose unconsolidated tailings and a great deal of water, or process fluid1. If the dam fails, the contents liquefy completely as they flow through the breach. In this liquid state, they can flow many miles downstream. If the dam itself were built of tailings material, as is often the case, it too would liquefy and join the flow.The reason the material is so loose in the first place is that it has been discharged into a pond filled with water. The tailings particles drift down through the water, their weight reduced by 50% due to buoyancy, to form a loose structure, like a “house of cards,” or lakebottom mud. It doesn’t take much of a shock to collapse the material into a liquefied state."

"The hazards associated with dust explosions are well known, and coal dust explosions present a significant hazard in the underground coal mining industry worldwide. In earlier work, we presented computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and test results for coal dust explosions within a 2.5 m diameter circular gallery, along with CFD simulations and test results for the suppression of these explosions with finely atomised water sprays. In this paper, we present refinements to the CFD modelling that yield a significantly improved calibration with the test results, and proceed to investigate by CFD the requirements for suppression of a coal dust explosion in a typical underground roadway. Observation from attending many conferences around the world reveals that many people are constantly shifting from the word ‘error’ to the word ‘uncertainty’ without a clear vision of what the subtle difference is. The same applies to a large swath of the scientific literature, in which these two concepts are unfortunately often used synonymously, which is a scientific flaw of the first order. In practice, as demonstrated in the Theory of Sampling (TOS), there are both sampling errors and sampling uncertainties. Sampling errors can easily be preventively minimised, while sampling uncertainty for a preselected sampling protocol is inevitable. P M Gy’s work, supported by G Matheron’s critical reviews, demonstrates beyond any possible doubt that sampling uncertainty cannot be achieved if sampling errors are not preventively minimised by applying very stringent rules that are too often ignored by sampling practitioners. A clarification, in line with the TOS, is presented to mitigate the confusion created by circles favouring the use of uncertainty versus the use of the word error. Both words are very different in nature and scope and they are both necessary in their due place and time.CITATION:Pitard, F F, 2017.
