Roof bolter occupations in underground coal mines continue to experience overexposure to respirable dust. One potential source of dust in roof bolting operations is the exhaust from the roof bolter dust collection system. A wet exhaust conditioner (water box) has been developed to reduce dust emissions from the exhaust of the vacuum dust collection system on roof bolting machines. The exhaust conditioner consists of a muffler chamber and a water chamber with four internal partitions to direct airflow over the surface of the water. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted a series of laboratory tests to assess the respirable dust capture ability of this device as compared to the standard exhaust muffler. To determine the dust collection efficiency, both devices were placed in the exhaust stream of a simulated roof bolter dust collection system. Gravimetric samplers were operated upstream and downstream of the exhaust conditioner and muffler to evaluate the ability to capture both respirable coal and limestone dust. Researchers observed a 41 % reduction in dust concentrations for the water exhaust conditioner in the laboratory configuration. Significant levels of dust deposition in the sampling chambers may have contributed to this effective capture rate.

AT the McGill concentrator of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co., all flotation operations have been carried out in Forrester cells since November, 1926. In respect to cost of operation, the new cell has proved to be superior to the Callow, which it supplanted, and its incorporation in the flow sheet has resulted in a marked improvement in the metallurgy. Before citing the advantages of the new machine over the old, it should be explained that the Forrester has not only replaced the Callow, but it has made possible the elimination of a number of tables as well. When Callow cells were in use, table concentration preceded flotation. The ball mill pulp was elevated, by means of air lifts, to roughing Wilfley tables situated two floors directly above the flotation floor. On an intermediate floor were additional tables which cleaned the concentrate from those above. The finished table concentrate constituted approximately 60 per cent. of the total mill production, and contained about 40 per cent. of the recovered copper. The table tailings were returned to the classifiers, the overflow from which went to the flotation cells and the oversize to the ball mills. As soon as the Forrester cells were installed, this tabling operation was discontinued. The ball mill pulp now discharges into the classifiers direct, without the intermediate tabling. It was impracticable to employ the present flow sheet when Callow cells were in use, for the reason that unless the greater part of the heavy mineral was first removed, it accumulated on the mats and adversely affected the flotation operation. By tabling ahead of flotation, it was practicable to maintain the concentrator at 10 to 20 per cent. greater capacity (depending up on the pyrite content of the ore) than was possible by flotation alone. This was due to the necessity for finer grinding in the latter case. Even though the table concentrates contained only 6 to 8 per cent. copper con- tent, the low smelting costs made it advantageous to operate at high mill capacity, at the cost of low grade of product. "As part of research to develop a novel flash ironmaking process using reduction of iron ore concentrate by natural gas or hydrogen, sulfur and phosphorus distribution ratios between MgOsaturated slag and iron were determined in the temperature range 1550-1650°C under three different gas atmospheres: H2/H2O, H2/H2O/CO/CO2, and CO/CO2. The distribution coefficients of sulfur (Ls) were 4.0, 2.0, and 0.8, respectively, under these atmospheres. The distribution coefficients of phosphorus (Lp) were, respectively, 8, 17, and 20 under these atmospheres. In the flash process over -25 wt% P and S volatilize during ore concentrate downward flight in the reactor shaft in addition to avoiding coke. Therefore, iron produced by the flash ironmaking process would have much lower sulfur contents than the typical hot metal produced by the BF.IntroductionGiven the issues related to large carbon dioxide emissions and energy consumption in the existing ironmaking technologies, a novel flash ironmaking technology was conceived by Sohn [1-3] at the University of Utah. This technology is the first ironmaking process that will convert iron ore concentrate directly to metallic iron in-flight. This process will produce iron directly from concentrate without requiring pelletization or sintering and avoid the need for coke. In addition, this process concept takes full advantage of the fine particle size of concentrate with a large surface area, which permits rapid reduction by a gas. In this novel ironmaking process, potential reductants and fuels are H2, natural gas, and coal gas. Therefore, an iron-slag bath is expected to be at equilibrium with gas atmospheres of mainly H2/H2O or CO/CO2/H2/H2O, respectively, corresponding to the use of H2 or natural gas/coal gas. Since the effects of an H2O- containing atmosphere on slag properties have not been studied before, it is critical for the development of the novel flash process to determine these effects. In H2-H2O-CO-CO2 gas mixtures under ironmaking conditions, H20 was found to have the most pronounced effect on the slag chemistry [ 4, 5]. In addition, it was found in this laboratory that water in the gas atmosphere affected the distribution of Mn between slag and molten iron [6]. Most previous work used CO/CO2 gas mixture to control oxygen partial pressure (p02) [7, 8]. Others used only inert atmospheres [9], although Kor and Richardson [10] used a mixture of C02/H2 to control p02. For phosphorus, previous research focused on Ar [11], Ar-CO mixture [12], CO [13], CO/CO2 [14] or N2/CO [15]. Therefore, it was necessary to investigate the effect of water vapor content in H2-H2O-CO-CO2 mixtures on the equilibrium distribution of sulfur and phosphorus between CaO-MgOsatSiO2-Al2O3-FeO- MnO (0.2-0.8 wt%)-P2O5 (0.1-0.9 wt%) slag and molten iron as part of the development of the novel flash ironmaking technology."

DESIRABLE as it is to summarize what has been set forth in preceding chapters, the task can only be approached with great hesitation. What follows represents the personal views of the author at the moment of writing, reserving the privilege to change them on more mature reflection or in the light of further evidence. With that reservation they may be stated somewhat as follows. Education for the mineral industries falls into two categories; general education and technical vocational, using the word vocational not in its usual sense but to signify preparation for specific activities, in which sense a law school is a vocational school. Even at the beginning, as indicated in the first chapter, mineral industry education was partly general and, partly technical and that relationship still persists, because technical education requires a firm basis of general education. Our general American system is to provide free public' general education through the twelfth grade, or completion of high-school work, though there are already many technical vocational high schools, and even in a community where nearly all the young people are preparing for entrance to college there will be some who wish to qualify for employment at the end of the high-school course, or even on completing junior high. Our educational system, therefore, has not only to provide education for those who intend to proceed beyond the twelfth grade but also for those who, for a variety of reasons, may wish or be forced to cease full-time education at any level between the first and twelfth grades. This study has been chiefly concerned with the problem of what kind and how much technical education to provide for those who have completed the twelfth grade and who wish to make their living in the mineral industries. Located on the 4850 Level (4,850 ft below the surface)at the former Homestake Mine in Lead, SD, this excavation is part of the U.S. Department of Energy’sLong-Baseline Neutrino Facility that will house particle detectors for the international Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment hosted by Fermilab. THE following paragraphs comprise such information as the Secretary has been able to obtain concerning the members and associates whose deaths have been reported. Further particulars or corrections of errors, and biographical data concerning deceased members or associates not already noticed in this way, are solicited. Charles IV. Benton was born at Kezar Falls, Maine, Nov. 12, 1843. We have no accurate knowledge concerning the early part of his career. In 1871 he engaged with the N. Y. Honduras Rosario Mining Co., at San Juancinto, Honduras, C. A., and later was employed at the Monserrat mine at Yuscaran, and at Santa Lucia, Honduras, with the Tenero Mining Milling Co. of Pennsylvania. In 1897 he became a member of the Institute. At the time he was stricken with his last sickness he was employed at the Paymaster mine at Tucson, Ariz. He died at Fairmount, Denver, Colo., Sept. 9, 1907. William R. Boggs, Jr.-The notice in the Bulletin for January was incorrect in saying that the murder of Mr. Boggs occurred while he was employed as metallurgical. manager by Mr. W. B. A. Dingwall, at La Maroma, San Luis Potosi, Mex. Mr. Dingwall writes that in March, 1907, Mr. Boggs left him, to return to his home at Winston, N. C., whence he. subsequently went to Durango, Mex., to take, with the Topia Mining Co., a position which he occupied at the tine of his death, Nov. 17, 1907. Mr. Dingwall says that, while in his service, Mr. Boggs never had any trouble with the workmen, but was esteemed and liked by them, as by all who knew him ; and adds, injustice to the State of San Luis Potosi, that the population, even in the mining-camps of that State, is orderly and law-abiding, and that the authorities are vigilant and just. The research is located within Asuncion and Cospan districts, which according to their geological features in contrast with previous studies pointing out Au, Mo and Pb anomalies create an environment of prospective interest. The objective is to use ASTER Satellite Images to identify ore-bearing hydrothermal alteration zones. To do this, processing techniques such as the combination of bands by RGB 943 and 461, band ratio 4/6, 4/5, 5/8 and 2/1 to identify advanced argillic, argillic to phyllic and propylitic alterations. In addition, indices defined by Ninomiya were used as a third technique in order to reinforce the data obtained from the previous techniques. The results in the study area are confirmed by the SAM spectral mapping technique using spectral signatures from the USGS library. Identifying kaolinite, alunite and pyrophyllite, assemblages of the advanced argillic alteration. Concluding in 3 areas of interest with the band ratios, 5 areas with the Ninomiya indexes and 9 areas validated with SAM, which were contrasted in 13 areas of prospective interest with well-marked argillic alteration.

Mining in Mexico has an immensely long tradition. In his first letter reporting to his sovereigns from Mexico in July 1519, Hernan Cortes wrote, "To our mind it is probable that this land contains as many riches as that from which Solomon is said to have obtained the gold for the temple ... " 1 But not only precious metals drew his attention; in 1524, short of tin needed for casting guns, he found it in Taxco. As an added bonus, those who went to find it "came upon a vein of iron which according to experts is of exceeding richness." 2 Since then, the mines of Mexico have yielded up enormous amounts of mineral and continue to do so. Mexico is one of the ten principal producers of minerals world-wide both in production volume and diversity. 3 Tens of thousands of tons of iron, sulphur, and coal come from its earth annually; it is the world's second largest producer of barite; third of antimony, fluorite, and graphite. 4 Copper, zinc, silver, molybdenum, arsenic and cadmium and others are wrested from its mines. The wealth is there; but maximizing its potential requires investment, technology, and markets that the government cannot itself provide. Thus mining, since the Mexican Revolution severely restricted by both law and policy, today looks to private investment to develop its potential. Beginning in 1989, Mexico's government cautiously moved to liberalize private sector involvement in mining; 5 using the experience gained from these initial regulatory changes, the current new Mining Law was adopted in 1992 6 and new Regulations were promulgated in 1993. 7

Alcan's Guillaume-Tremblay plant, located in Jonquiere, Quebec, has been in operation since 1990. This was the first plasma dross processing plant ever built. In addition to the use of the plasma heating technology, Guillaume-Tremblay has other unique features making it a modern and efficient dross processing facility. This paper presents a general overview of the practical experience at the Guillaume-Tremblay plant. In particular, the utilization of plasma heating in industrial conditions, the metallurgical performance, the unique dross handling system, the control and information management system and the reclaiming of the by-products will be discussed. Finally, the use of the plasma process for salty dross will be addressed' briefly.

"As part of the Schiphol-Amsterdam-Almere project, the largest aqueduct in Europe is being built in order for the A1 motorway to cross the Vecht River. The A1 consists of 12 lanes and the total width of the aqueduct will be 65 m (213 ft). The total length of the structure will be 620 m (2035 ft). Speed of construction is essential for the DBFM-contract, which forms the primary reason for choosing a building method with a horizontal water retaining barrier created by low pressure grouting. After final checks on the water tightness of the silica based layer (softgel), excavation to a depth of approximately 12 m (40 ft) below the water table could be started in order to build the aqueduct.This paper presents a new approach for the calculation of the required grout volumes needed to ensure a “softgel” layer without gaps or holes. The approach applies measurement of deviations due to execution aspects in a probabilistic model. With this model, one is able to study the effects in a field application, i.e. multiple rows of grouted spheres. The results are visualized in order to analyze the risk of holes more easily. It is evident that the existence of a hole means a major leakage. By completing multiple runs, the strategy for grout volumes can be adjusted to minimize this risk.INTRODUCTIONThe Dutch Department of Waterways and Public Works invests over € 4 billion between 2012-2020 to increase the capacity of 63 km (41 mi) motorways of one of Holland’s major corridors. The A1/A6 will be transformed over a distance of 20 kilometers (13 mi). Near Muiden, the current drawbridge on the A1 for crossing the Vecht river will be replaced by a new aqueduct to be located slightly south of the existing bridge."

"Quantitatively identifying the load on a steel king beam set is a complicated issue in designing the king beam structure at the slope bottom area. From an engineering perspective, understanding the nature and support mechanism of the king beam structure as a standing support is critical in identifying the calculation input parameters for the structure design software. Based on design practices in recent years and successful applications in several slope bottom intersections, the authors present a king beam design methodology, including qualitative analysis, quantitative calculation with a structural design software, and computer Finite Element Analysis (FEA) verification.Especially important is the concept of interaction and the confinement effect between the king beam structure and surrounding rocks, which is essential in designing a proper steel structure in terms of maintaining the roof stability, as well as saving the steel materials and costs of manufacture, labor, and delivery. This paper details the design methodology and applications in several underground slope bottom intersection designs, reaching the goals of improving roof stability and reducing costs.INTRODUCTION AND DESIGN METHODOLOGYCurrently, the load on a square or arch set is typically determined by either past empirical design experiences or known heights of roof falls in current or adjacent mines. These methods work but sometimes are too conservative from an engineering perspective. For example, when designing a king beam structure for an intersection, these methods may lead to a design with extremely large and heavy steel beams, which are not convenient for delivery and installation on-site, not to mention, costly. Therefore, accurately identifying the potential maximum load on the king beam structure is important for designing a safet, effective, and cost-efficient steel structure. "The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been researching refuge alternatives (RAs) since 2007. RAs typically have built-in pressure relief valves (PRVs) to prevent the unit from reaching unsafe pressures. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration requires that these valves vent the chamber at a maximum pressure of 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi, 5.0 in. H2O), or as specified by the manufacturer, above mine atmospheric pressure in the RA. To facilitate PRV testing, an instrumented benchtop test fixture was developed using an off-the-shelf centrifugal blower and ductwork. Relief pressures and flow characteristics were measured for three units: (1) a modified polyvinyl chloride check valve, (2) an off-the-shelf brass/cast-iron butterfly check valve and (3) a commercially available valve that was designed specifically for one manufacturer’s steel prefabricated RAs and had been adapted for use in one mine operator’s built-in-place RA. PRVs used in tent-style RAs were not investigated. The units were tested with different modifications and configurations in order to check compliance with Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations, or 30 CFR, regulations. The commercially available relief valve did not meet the 30 CFR relief pressure specification but may meet the manufacturer’s specification. Alternative valve designs were modified to meet the 30 CFR relief pressure specification, but all valve designs will need further design research to examine survivability in the event of a 103 kPa (15.0 psi) impulse overpressure during a disaster. BackgroundThe Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006, known as the Miner Act (U.S. Department of Labor, 2006), was enacted in the wake of three mine accidents involving explosions or fire that claimed 19 lives that year. Intended to help improve underground coal mine accident preparedness, the Miner Act includes provisions that target mine safety issues in areas such as emergency response planning; adoption of new technology; training and education; and mine safety standards enforcement. Section 13 of the Miner Act specifically directed the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to provide for research into the effectiveness and viability of refuge alternatives (RAs) for underground coal mines, and the U.S. Department of Labor to act on the results of such research, as appropriate. These mandates culminated in the 2009 adoption of changes to the Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations, or 30 CFR, mining health and safety regulations (U.S. Department of Labor, 2008), requiring underground coal mines to supply mine emergency RAs and associated components so as to provide a life-sustaining environment for persons trapped underground. Such RAs can be either selfcontained mobile units or built-in-place facilities. The regulatory changes also include provisions establishing requirements for the approval of RAs and their components by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), among which are numerous criteria for providing a safe breathable atmosphere under positive pressure within the RAs. One criterion for maintaining a safe RA atmosphere is the inclusion of an air pressure relief valve that will activate at a maximum of 1.25 kPa (specified as 0.18 psi, or approximately 5.0 in. H2O), or as specified by the RA manufacturer, above mine atmospheric pressure in the RA (U.S. Department of Labor, 2008)."

High-purity neodymium, praseodymium, and didymium (a cerium-free mixture of light rare-earth elements) were prepared by electrolysis of the oxides in a medium consisting of the respective rare-earth fluorides and lithium fluoride. The metals were electrodeposited in the liquid state and collected as nodules on a skull of frozen electrolyte. Cells were operated from 1,000° to 1,100° C. The requisite temperature was maintained by passing alternating and direct currents through the bath. Graphite was used for the anodes and tungsten for the cathode. The metal products contained <0.02 percent each carbon and oxygen and <0.025 percent tungsten as major impurities. Analysis of typical didymium metal nodules showed an approximately twofold enrichment in neodymium and praseodymium over their respective concentrations in the cell feed. The lanthanum content of the metal was about one-half its content in the oxide.

IN the past few years and especially since the beginning of World War No. 2, gold has attained a new, important. and critical place in the international scene, and in world affairs. In the past, as far back as history records, most wars have been waged for the purpose of acquiring it from someone else by conquest. But now, the most titanic struggle of all time is being waged with the avowed purpose of not only destroying it, but of destroying all that it stands for and represents. A tradition dating back to ancient Rome, affirms that battles are fought by men with weapons, but wars arc eventually won by gold. The validity of that tradition is now being subjected to its major test. Hitler has proclaimed that in his new world order, the work dollar or reichsmark, a beautifully engraved paper currency representing only a theory of value, based on unit of work and production, will become the supreme medium of world exchange, and that gold eventually will he valueless and obsolete.

WHAT are the chief branches of the mining engineering profession today? In an effort to analyze the structure of the profession, for practical purposes, a quantitative study has been made of the membership of the A.I.M.E., and is herein reported for the first time. In spite of the effect that a long history and a relatively small group of professional workers have had in limiting specialization in mining engineering, there has nevertheless grown up a wide variety of specialties in this field. More than a hundred different kinds of engineers were discovered among the titles given by Institute members in the Directory, ranging from "advisory engineer" and "American engineer" down to "wire-rope engineer" and "works engineer." How should all these titles be defined and interpreted? How many of them should be relegated as meaningless or confusing? What are the relationships among the remaining useful designations? Should some of them be grouped as "metallurgical" or "chemical," or under some other head?

Pure respirable quartz is a known pathogenic agent for lung disease. However, for mixed dusts, neither mineralogical nor in vitro cytotoxicity assays unequivocally predict the contribution of quartz to their pathogenic potential.First, although Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) and Progressive Massive Fibrosis (PMF) prevalence have been found to correlate with total respirable coal mine dust exposure, and with coal rank (Attfield and Morring, 1992), epidemiological studies generally have not found the quartz component of coal mine dust as measured by X-ray diffraction or infrared spectroscopy (each of which essentially measures the mass-percent quartz in a bulk sample) to be clear predictors of CWP prevalence or incidence (Walton et al., 1971). Second, the properties which distinguish the extreme fibrogenic potential of quartz are not revealed by conventional in vitro bioassay comparison with other silicate mineral dusts. As an example, quartz and kaolin (aluminosilicate) clay in vitro cytotoxicities are comparable for lavaged primary pulmonary macrophages.The studies discussed here address these two anomalies from a general hypothesis that the pathogenic activity of respired quartz particles is associated with properties of, and interactions with, the particle surfaces. One factor in the expression of toxic activity by a particle surface is the biological availability of that surface. Anomalous lack of correlation of disease prevalence with mass percent quartz in exposures to some mixed composition respirable-sized dusts suggests that individual particle surface features, invisible by bulk sample mass analysis, may alter the biological availability of a fraction of quartz particles in a dust. For pure-surfaced mineral particles, the comparably strong prompt membranolytic activities of quartz and kaolin in vitro suggest that upon deposition of such particles in the lung there must be other interactions with particle surfaces which distinguish quartz. This might be due to toxic surface-associated sites specific to silica, or to interactions of other sites on other mineral particles which affect the biological availability of their toxic functional groups. For example, alurninol groups on clays affect the availability or activity of adjacent silanol groups. Surface activities which distinguish quartz pathogenici ty might be manifest in one or more of the sequential interactions upon deposition in the lung; first with the pulmonary surfactant system, then with extracellular and phagolysosomal enzymatic digestive processes, or with subsequent cytotoxic processes.

In-pit Crushing and Conveying (IPCC) is increasingly being considered by mining companies as a means to reduce their dependence on trucks and thus, fuel, tires, labour, etc. There is potential for great savings in operating costs which ultimately can mean better economics for a mining project. Vale has considered the application of IPCC at its Moatize coal project in Mozambique. Up to three studies have been conducted with the latest, at a pre-feasibility level, showing some promise. PHYSICAL AND CLIMATIC DIVISIONS. PERU is divided into three regions-the coast, the sierra, or high mountainous region, and the a montana," or forest region of the Amazon basin. The Coast.-The coast is an arid region. No rain falls excepting in the extreme northern part, which borders the Gulf of Guayaquil. There is, however, a slight precipitation in the form of mist (garua), which occurs on the coast hills during the so-called winter months. The aridity of the coast is due principally to the antarctic or Humboldt ocean-current, which, being cold and having a temperature lower than that of the land, absorbs rather than produces vapors. The coast mists occur during the season when the land is relatively cold. Near the Gulf of Guayaquil the antarctic current diverges from the coast, so that in the Tumbes valley and adjacent country the conditions in the summer months are such as produce rains. In the remaining valleys of the coast, agriculture is made possible only by means of irrigation, and is accordingly very limited in extent, although rich and varied. In the northern and south-central portions of the coast, plains extend inland from the sea, while in the southern part there is a coastal plain separated from the Pacific by a range of coast hills. Between the northern and south-central plains, as well as between the south-central and southern, the foothills of the sierra descend to the seacoast. The Sierra.-The sierra embraces the high land dominated by the lofty cordilleras of the Andes. In the southern part of Peru there are two cordilleras, the western and the eastern, which enter from Chile and Bolivia respectively, and inclose between them the Titicaca Lake basin. To the north of Lake Titicaca these cordilleras unite in the knot of Vilcanota, south of Cuzco. In secondary copper smelting as it is performed at Hüttenwerke Kayser plant in Lünen, tin-and lead-containing flue dusts are produced as intermediate products. These flue dusts are further processed in a hearth furnace. Followed by certain refining operations a saleable tin-lead-alloy is produced. Even though the hearth furnace technology has been in use for this purpose for a long time still its performance undergoes changes in search for optimum processing conditions regarding to the increasing complexity of the raw materials and tightening economical and ecological boundaries. The use of modern statistical tools for the calculation of accurate mass balances is demonstrated for the tin-lead hearth furnace. These reliable mass balances are the basis for any further modelling of the process with the aim of optimization. Incorporating metallurgical knowledge and experience as well as different mathematical modelling techniques, further studies are planned in which the recoveries of valuable and minor elements and their dependency from various process parameters are examined. The aim of this modelling is to optimize the recoveries of the valuable elements, to minimize the energy consumption and the processing costs and thus to keep the process competitive in a harsher economical and ecological surrounding. The modelling principles are transferable to other metallurgical operations and are especially suited for ill-defined pyrometallurgical processes.
