The commonly accepted genetic theories of Pilbara iron ores and Woodie Woodie manganese ores have often presented them as quite unique. This apparent uniqueness is not confined to just iron and manganese, but is also seen in gold and copper deposits in Western Australia. The published material on iron and manganese ores would seem to have either a quite complicated genesis or none at all. An alternate theory for the origin of these deposits is presented which involves a protore with simple oxidation and pH controls with hydrothermal fluid sources from the diagenesis and dewatering of the underlying strata. This theory explains the distribution, thinning, cold dolerites and very high concentrations of deleterious minerals observed in these deposits. This genesis system is also related to the systems that deposit hydrothermal gold and copper in sediments in the region.This paper presents the author’s observations, sampling and mapping after several decades studying and exploring for the minerals in Australia and locations overseas. All of these theories were developed with (or in spite of!) the guidance of Mal Kneeshaw, but would never have seen the light of day without him and the others presenting here. It is not what I would call scientifically polished, and possibly deserves more detailed studies; it is, however, presented as a discussion paper.CITATION:Schwann, P B, 2015. The potential techniques for the direct smelting of copper sulfide concentrates to blister copper were evaluated from the standpoint of commercial application. Many existing smelters are adaptable to direct smelting practice but only with improved control of metallurgical performance. Modified and innovative procedures for slag cleaning and metal refining, prerequisites to direct smelting, are presented and discussed. The ability to smelt directly to blister copper using existing equipment and eliminating the need to convert matte offers ,significant advantages to traditional smelting practice from the viewpoint of cost, 'S02 control, and process simplicity.

"*Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B.Eng (Chemical Engineering) degreeSynopsisSpent coffee grounds were transformed into biochar using a hydrothermal method. Some of the biochar product was pre-treated through surfactant impregnation with sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) to enhance its adsorption capacity. The non-treated(NT) and pre-treated(PT) biochars were characterized using FTIR spectroscopy and SEM-EDS analyses, which revealed that the products had the potential for adsorption of heavy metals from solution and confirmed the successful impregnation of biochar with SDS surfactant. The two adsorbents were then used for the removal of cadmium from solution and the adsorption behavior and capacity determined through adsorption isotherm, kinetic, and thermodynamic studies. It was found that the cadmium was adsorbed in several concentric layers on the surface of the adsorbents through a chemisorption mechanism. The PT biochar was identified as a superior adsorbent, with a capacity of qe = 10.67 mg/g compared to the NT biochar with qe = 4.82 mg/g. The adsorption of cadmium onto the PT biochar was further determined to be spontaneous and endothermic. It was therefore concluded that the PT biochar shows potential as an adsorbent and could be considered for implementation in the treatment of metal-polluted effluents. IntroductionCoal mining operations are notorious for producing large amounts of waste tailings, which are disposed of in the form of a slurry on tailings dams. This inadvertently contributes towards environmental problems (Jin, Mansour, and Thomas, 2017). Heavy metals are one of the most common pollutants that originate from solid mine waste disposal facilities, and these can leach into groundwater supplies, contaminating them and rendering the water unsuited for human consumption (Salomons, 1995). Cadmium occurs in conjunction with metalliferous ores and can cause severe damage to agricultural soils and drinking water supplies in the vicinity of mining sites (Dudka et al., 1995). It has a tendency to migrate into the surrounding vegetation, which in turn can cause harm to humans and animals when consumed (Marquez et al., 2018)."

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the acid resistance of ceramic materials to identify construction materials for emerging technology in chemical and metallurgical processes. Eight commercial ceramic materials, were evaluated: two red shale, two fireclay, one silicon carbide, one silica, one carbon, and one high-alumina. Samples were exposed to 10 wt pct H2S04 at 50° C and 10, 30, 50, 70, and 90 wt pct H2S04 at 90° C for time periods of 110 days. Statistically significant changes in cold crushing strength were observed in the silicon carbide and car-bon materials. Weight changes and the leach rate of Al, Ca. Fe. K, Mg, Na. Si, and Ti were also monitored. The most severe corrosion conditions were at 90° C and 30 to 50 wt pct H2S04 for the acidproof and at 10 wt pct H2S04 for the acid-resistant materials. The silica and the high-alumina materials were the most acid-resistant, followed by the higher density red shale and fireclay.

"The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act) of 2006 (PL 109-236, 2006) established the Office of Mine Safety and Health, functioning as the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) within the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and provided authority for awarding contracts related to the development and implementation of new mine technology and equipment. The OMSHR external contracts program was formed in accordance with the MINER Act and has since issued more than 150 contracts focused on worker health and safety. Initial funding for this program was provided by the United States Congress through two emergency supplemental appropriations and was focused on emergency oxygen supply, communications and tracking, and refuge chambers (also referred to as refuge alternatives). Since the MINER Act, Congress has continued to fund the program through the annual NIOSH mining appropriation. The program was supplemented starting in 2009 with an academic capacity building program directed toward developing university tenure-track faculty and facilities and supporting graduate students in the area of mine ventilation. Ground control was added as an additional focus area in 2011. A short synopsis of each contract is published on the NIOSH Mining website (www.cdc.gov/niosh/ mining/researchprogram/contracts/index.html) and final reports are available in digital form on request. A summary of the progress OMSHR has made over the 10-year period since the Act was published previously (Snyder et al., 2016).External contracts are broadly classified by the following areas:• Communications and tracking.• Emergency response.o Self-escape and breathing air supply.o Refuge alternatives.o Escape and rescue.• Equipment safety.• Fires and explosions.• Ground control.• Mine environmental systems (mine ventilation and atmospheric monitoring).• Worker/workplace health and safety.Contracts are issued under a request for proposal (RFP), through a broad agency announcement (BAA) or under an interagency agreement (IAA). An RFP solicitation includes a specific problem description and a well-defined scope of work to guide the offeror in preparing a bid to conduct the research. Under the BAA several problem areas are described and the offeror develops the scope of work and deliverables for the proposed research. An IAA is very similar to an RFP except it is a contract between two federal government agencies."

Chromate conversion coating is a process for making a complex layer at the surface of zinc galvanized steel which makes the metal more resistant to corrosion, especially at marine atmosphere, and increases the adhesiveness of color. In this work the influences of various compositions on commercial zinc galvanized steel sheet to the color of chromate conversion coating has been investigated at normal temperature and the factors that affect the control and optimization of the process have been determined. A bath composition of 20 g/liter Cr203 and 10 g/liter NaOH and a dipping time of 50 seconds at room temperature (25-30°C) make a desirable color of chromate coating. A slow agitation at a constant pH of I (with additions of NaOH or H2SO4) assures a constant bath condition and develops the color. This kind of coating has more corrosion resistance and this bath condition and composition are also more economical.

"Honored with a DFI 2006 Special Recognition Award, the Four Bears Bridge was constructed across Lake Sakakawea and opened to traffi c in September 2005. The very large lake size and severe winter conditions required an effi cient foundation design capable of resisting extreme ice loading and able to be effi ciently constructed in waters up to 90' deep (27.4m).DESIGNING FOR EFFICIENCYLocated in a remote area of North Dakota, the Four Bears Bridge replacement was a major undertaking for the North Dakota Department of Transportation, with dual goals of providing a new structure that would endure a severe environment, while enhancing the natural beauty of the area. Competing bids would achieve the best price for the owner, challenging the design team to creatively solve the engineering challenges unique to the site. Foundations for North Dakota’s new Four Bears Bridge had to accommodate water level fl uctuations of up to 40 feet (12m), along with extreme ice loading and be effi cient in order to be the low cost solution at the time of bidding. All three major criteria were achieved through the use of an effi cient ‘fl oating’ lost precast concrete cofferdam founded on steel pipe piles, which allowed the contractor to achieve the project schedule. The result is an award-winning bridge that is contextually sensitive to the environment. The bridge aesthetics pay tribute to the Three Affi liated Tribes, the Mandan, Arikara and Hidatsa, who reside on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation, adjacent to the bridge site.The original Four Bears Bridge was located over the Missouri River near Elbowoods, the native grounds of the Three Affi liated Tribes. Construction of the Garrison Dam in the early 1950’s created Lake Sakakawea, a fl ood control project on the Missouri River, and resulted in the area being fl ooded. The bridge, along with many tribal members, was relocated to a site near New Town. The bridge provides the primary crossing of Lake Sakakawea and is a critically important transportation element for the residents of the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation. The relocated bridge had become functionally obsolete and not replacing it would require a detour of 170 miles (274km). The North Dakota Department of Transportation determined that it should be replaced. In order to achieve the most effective solution, the North Dakota Department of Transportation selected a design team responsible for the creation of competing steel and concrete designs that were competitively bid. The design team was led by Kadrmas Lee & Jackson, with FIGG responsible for the concrete bridge design, while Lichtenstein Consulting and Kadrmas Lee & Jackson completed the alternate steel bridge design."

This paper presents the results of a study focussed on determining the distribution of cobalt in different types of pyrite of the La Estrella IOCG deposit in Chile. In the IOCG mineral deposits, where copper is the main product, the quantification and distribution of cobalt is required to correctly define the technical and economic viability of recovering cobalt as a by-product. In the La Estrella mineral deposit, seven alteration and mineralisation events were recognised through both optical and automated electronic mineralogical analysis. Of these seven events, five different types of pyrites were identified, each with unique characteristics of the pyrite crystals. Through advanced elemental analysis of these five types of pyrites, it was determined that the concentration and distribution of cobalt within the pyrite crystal is dependent on the mineralisation event. The results indicate high cobalt concentrations in the early pyrite mineralisation events, associated with relatively fine pyrite grains, and cobalt generally occurring in a solid form in the pyrite core. The late pyrite mineralisation event exhibits the lowest concentrations of cobalt, with cobalt predominantly present along the outer periphery of the pyrite. These results are relevant from a metallurgical point of view because the preferential location of cobalt within the pyrite crystal will influence the maximum metallurgical recovery of cobalt. For this, a cobaltiferous pyrite concentrate must be formed which, according to the characteristics of pyrite, must be processed with the optimal solubilisation method. The overall objective is to ensure both good cobalt recovery and a high concentration of cobalt in the leach solution resulting from pyrite leaching. "One of the principal goals of modern industry is to minimize the environmental impact and increase the materials- and energy-efficiency of transforming raw materials into valuable products. This paper will highlight our latest laboratory-scale research in low-energy, low-solvent reactivity of metal oxides and their conversion into popular metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (e.g. Basolite® Z1200 component ZIF-8), and metallodrugs (e.g. bismuth subsalicylate, active component of Pepto-Bismol®). Mechanochemical ion- and liquid-assisted grinding (ILAG) and ""accelerated aging"" techniques will be presented, along with novel low-energy and solvent-free approaches, inspired by geological weathering processes, for converting metal oxides into metal-organic materials. INTRODUCTIONThe development of environmentally-friendly processes, which would in the same time be more materials- and energy-efficient than the existing ones, is one of the central concerns of modern chemical research. In that sense, the focus of the chemist has been mainly on the preparation of carbon-based organic molecules and adaptation of traditional organic synthesis to the recently delineated ideals of Green Chemistry. However, there is a growing realization within the chemistry community that significant energy, materials, and ecology-related benefits can be achieved and, indeed, targeted in the transformations of materials that are typically associated with inorganic chemistry and minerals processing. The principal aim of this highlight contribution is to illustrate how, through the use of approaches associated with solventfree chemistry and mechanochemistry (James et al., 2012), one can develop a clean and efficient system of chemical and materials transformations involving oxide precursors that normally belong to the realm of inorganic chemistry and mineral processing. In particular, this contribution will provide an overview of the recently developed mechanochemical and solvent-free reactivity of metal oxides towards small organic molecules. These mechanochemical reactions, including the methods of liquid-assisted grinding (LAG, Frišcic & Jones, 2009) and ion- and liquid-assisted grinding (ILAG, Frišcic, 2010), have so far provided a radically different means to construct advanced metal-organic materials (e.g. porous metal-organic frameworks, [MOFs] or metallodrugs) by rehabilitating metal oxides as precursors, eliminating the use of bulk organic solvents, and avoiding the use of high temperatures."

The firms in construction industry could not sufficiently adapt the rapidly emerging information technologies in recent years into their corporate structures. Therefore, in an effort to further exploit the benefits of information technology (IT), integration of the experiences and backgrounds of construction industry and the advantages of IT, is one of the most open-ended fields for improvement in this industry. Utilization of IT in the construction sites will positively affect the efficiency, productivity, quality and health & safety issues in the construction sites thus the cost and completion time of the projects. Within this context, augmented reality technology, which brings a new perspective into IT, can be put into the service of construction industry. Augmented reality which has been designed to improve the services in many application domains such as school education, military warfare, military trainings, industrial maintenance, retail and medical, can be defined in the simplest form as augmenting the real world with information from the virtual world. The main aim of this study, which presents an overview of an ongoing project, is to develop an innovative method by making a construction worker, foreman, equipment operator or a site engineer watch a very comprehensive and informative animation which will enable the said staff to perform or supervise all the phases of the activity he or she is in charge for in a more efficient, productive, safer and qualified manner by means of smart glasses using augmented reality systems. In this respect, training material related with the activities in the construction sites will be prepared and with a well-fictionalized scenario, animations exhibiting all the phases and details regarding the related activity (e.g. masonry, formwork and rebar works etc.), method of statement, correct and incorrect applications in comparison-wise manner, will be produced. Therefore, the user will be able to reach the training material, method statements etc. in the animations about the activity he or she is in charge for, enabling him or her to figure out the work as prescribed in the specifications. Basic trainings about the system will be given to target group, i.e. construction workers, foremen, operators, site engineers and managers working in the construction sites to apply the system on sites after all the system was tested. After the testings, to determine the effectiveness of this system, semi-structured interviews and survey questionnaires will be conducted among the mentioned target group. Therefore, the potential benefits of this system to the construction industry can be determined. The main target of this study is to implement an efficient, thorough construction management by orienting the staff in the construction sites to perform efficient, safe and qualified works by means of smart glasses that use augmented reality. There are relatively few studies about the implementations of augmented reality technology in construction. The outputs to be attained in the end of the study have the potential of improvement of time, cost, quality and safety parameters by ensuring a qualified, safe, efficient and productive construction management via augmented reality technology in the construction industry.

The production of iron and steel and non-ferrous metals by pyrometallurgical processes will remain a critical element in meeting the demand for materials in both developed and developing nations. Given the important need to reduce and minimise greenhouse gas emissions the technological focus of future pyrometallurgical R&D by universities and industry alike must concentrate on sustainability issues such as improved energy efficiency, recycling and waste minimization. Continued efforts are also needed on process optimization and new process development with a view to reducing capital and operating costs of the new large “mega” plants. Using the academic and industrial backgrounds of the authors, the present paper reviews the current status of R&D in pyrometallurgy in university departments with a particular emphasis on sustainability issues. The role of industry and government laboratories is also reviewed although primarily for developed countries. The paper also includes comments and suggestions on the future requirements for education and R&D in pyrometallurgy in developed countries to maximise sustainability. It is also suggested that future R&D in pyrometallurgy will be even more concentrated in developing countries – most notably China.

Mineral processing plants include different stages like crushing, grinding, classification and concentration, all of which have partially affect the final product. To identify and solve the related problems of each stage, process audition should be carried out continuously to find the major solutions of improving product and decreasing the maintenance and operating costs. The Iranian Gohar-Zamin iron ore beneficiation plant consists of equipment such as gyratory and cone crushers, high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR), ball mill, dry and wet double-deck vibrating screens, hydrocyclones cluster, magnetic drum separators, thickener and horizontal vacuum belt filters. The defects of initial design as well as current non-standard operating conditions of equipment were monitored and detected and the opportunities for process optimisation were presented as follows: establishing the control loop of power draw for cone crushers, the modification of feeding chute in cone crushers to minimise the non-uniform wear of parts, removing segregation in the fresh feed bin and screen’s circulating load chute in order to provide the proper feed to HPGR, reducing wear rate on HPGR rolls surfaces, decreasing the amount of rejected materials in screen, equalising the solid content and particle size distribution (PSD) of feed in all magnetic drum separators and equalising the PSD of hydrocyclones overflow. This paper provides a guideline for the mineral processing industry to focus its efforts on process design to deliver the efficiency with minimum capital costs. O sistema MgO-NiO é um dos importantes sistemas para o entendimento das reações metal-escória na elaboração das ligas de à base níquel. As ligas à base de níquel usualmente apresentam adições de magnésio com o intuito de melhoria da plasticidade destas o que permite o seu processamento através de processos de conformação mecânica. Neste trabalho foi realizada a modelagem termodinâmica deste sistema utilizando o modelo de células de Kapoor-Frohberg-Gaye e o módulo PARROT® do pacote Thermo-Calc® com objetivo de complementar o banco de dados SLAG®. Como resultado foi obtido um conjunto de parâmetros termodinâmicos que descrevem as fases deste sistema.

Research programs conducted by Allis-Chalmers Corporation are showing that the most efficient energy use in crushers is achieved when the forces applied to particles undergoing breakage are increased. Laboratory bench scale tests have been developed to confirm this phenomena, which was first observed in the field using HYDROCOME crushers with automatic setting controls. A new testing machine is described and methods of maximizing such benefits are postulated. FOREWORD Allis-Chalmers Corporation was founded in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1847 as the E. P. Allis Company, which had an initial interest in manufacturing components in the grinding of flour. As such, its roots were started in reducing material size, which is covered by the generic term, comminution.

The paper introduced bio-oxidation plants of refractory gold concentrate in China and CCGRI cultures. CCGRI cultures are composed of bacteria and archaea. Archaea Ferroplasma acidiphilum is very thick and fills whole mineral surface. It plays a more dominant role in CCGRI process. Several years of practice has proved that the operating temperature in bioreactors between 38~52?,gold recovery is almost same. Pulp concentration has been increased each year and reached to 25%.

Introduction Kootenay strata of Lower Cretaceous age contain much of the highest rank coal produced in Alberta. These strata outcrop in the foothills and mountains of southwestern Alberta and southeastern British Columbia, and the economic value of the coal seams contained in them was evident to the earliest explorers, who refer co them in their journals. Lacer, investigation of the .coal measures was undertaken by prospectors and by a succession of geologists, most of whom were in the employ of the Federal government, but some acted for private interests. Surveys by these men proved chat foothills and mountain regions hold immense quantities of high-grade coal within easy reach of transportation facilities, and their conclusions have accelerated the development of the coal-mining industry m Alberta. Among geologists who have contributed much to our knowledge of the region are J. M. Dawson, G. M. Dawson, R. C. McConnell, D. B. Dowling, J. D. Mackenzie, B. Rose, J. R. Marshall, B. Rose, J. R. Marshall, B. R. McKay, J. A. Allan, and J. L. Carr. The present paper is to a great extent a compilation of the work of the above men and of several others who have investigated the area lying between Bow river and Crowsnest pass. Space does not permit a list of all the sources of information so chat only chose of prime importance are given in the text. Data for the map and ?cross-sections of Figure 1 were taken from the following published maps of the Geological Survey of Canada: Cascade Coal Basin, Pub. 933; Canmore, Maps 322 and 323; Upper Elk River and Upper Highwood Rivers, Pub. l980; Blairmore, Pub. 1584; Southfork Coal Area Map l03A; and of the Research Council of Alberta: Highwood-Elbow Area, Map 20; and Ribbon Creek Area, Map 21. In some cases, the cross-sections have been simplified or otherwise altered, and for these revisions the writer cakes full responsibility. The stratigraphic sections of Figure 2 have been taken from published reports of the above mentioned organizations. The area covered in this paper is shown in Figure l. It is wholly within Alberta, and reaches from township 5 to township 27 and from range 1 co range 11, west of the fifth meridian. Its location is about fifty miles west of both Calgary and Lethbridge. Topography of the area ranges from foothill on the east to mountainous on the west. In this paper' the foothill region is considered to be chat which lies immediately east of the most easterly mountain ranges, such as Livingstone and Highwood. There are two principal coal mining districts in the area, one served by the main line of the Canadian ?Pacific railway and centring about Canmore, the other by a branch line of che same railway and centring about Bellevue, Blairmore, and Coleman.

I. Introduction The experimental work described in this paper was carried out during 1967 and 1968 in an inclined reinforced concrete adit which had been driven during 1965 and 1966 to provide primary access for a new gypsum mine. The new mine was situated near the village of Sherburn-in-Elmet in central Yorkshire in an area of extensive post-glacial plains of deltaic and lacustrine origin. These plains cover a large area of this part of Yorkshire extending inland from the coast for a distance of about 35 miles. The gypsum deposit at Sherburn dates from Permian times and it is considered" to have been associated with the western-most edges of the ancient Zechstein Sea which was also responsible for the formation of the extensive evaporite deposits in north-east Yorkshire. The gypsum deposit, which varies in thickness from 10 to 15 feet, is extremely pure and it occurs quite close to the surface; in the Sherburn area the overburden is only 120 feet thick. The proximity of the deposit to the surface, however, tends to give a somewhat false idea of the magnitude of the problems associated with its extraction. These problems were all related to the nature of the overlying strata. As has already been mentioned, the surface deposits are post-glacial and they consist of an extremely large number of thin layers of varved clays, fine silts and sands extending down to a depth of 75 feet. From the bottom of the post-glacial deposits to the seam, a distance of about 45 feet, the strata consists of a succession of marls, weak sandstones, and siltstones, which although they are inherently incompetent materials, are appreciably stronger

"Nearly perfect spherical shaped water drops rolling-off from the surface of lotus leaf is one of the beauties of nature. This kind of surface is called superhydrophobic, since the water does not like it. Physically, a superhydrophobic surface provides a contact angle (CA) of water over 150°. The combinations of both mico-nanostructure topography as well as low surface energy are essential to have such high CA on a surface. Nano-micro structured superhydrophobic surfaces have been developed in different methods. (i) Monodispersed fluorinated silica nanoparticles have been synthetized via Stöber Sol-Gel process and deposited on various surfaces, such as aluminium or glass, to obtain transparent superhydrophobic thin films. (ii) Similarly, zinc stearate nanocomposite coating has been fabricated by spray process on the same substrates. These thin films are found mechanically robust with drag reduction of coefficient 16% lower than as-received surfaces. (iii) By electrodepositing pure zinc on steel surfaces and further coating it with diluted room-temperature vulcanized silicone rubber, the surface become superhydrophobic. This superhydrophobic surface protects the steel against corrosion by increasing the polarization resistance from 1.5 k? on steel to 44.4 k?. This coating also reduced the ice adhesion on the steel surface 6.3 times as compared to bare steel substrates. Globally, these superhydrophobic surfaces have tremendous applications against corrosion reductions, drag reductions and ice adhesion reductions.INTRODUCTIONSuperhydrophobic coatings are increasingly attractive to the industry and academia due to their unique self-cleaning properties as a result of their water repelling characteristics. Fabrication of superhydrophobic coating is an inspiration from nature as water is seen to repel on many natural surfaces such as those of the lotus leaves, butterfly wings, water striders’ legs, and so on (Gao & Jiang, 2004; J. Huang, Wang & Wang, 2006; Neinhuis & Barthlott, 1997; Zheng, Gao & Jiang, 2007). This non-wetting phenomenon is well understood on lotus leaves, shown on the Figure 1 (a), and it is considered as the basis of the studies of superhydrophobicity. The existence of this binary structure on the surface of the lotus leaves allows a large amount of air entrapment and consequently reduces the contact area of water on it and the presence of low surface energy waxy components with reduced affinity to water together leads to the superhydrophobic properties. The phenomenon is shown on Figure 1 (b). Cassie and Baxter (Cassie & Baxter, 1944) as well as Wenzel (Wenzel, 1936) proposed two mathematical models to explain the wetting phenomena on rough surfaces that leads to superhydrophobic properties. By definition, superhydrophobic surfaces are characterized by a water contact angle value = 150° with the rolling off of water drops from the surfaces (Sarkar & Saleema, 2010). Superhydrophobic surfaces find tremendous importance in the technological world where it can applied in domains such as anti-corrosion, anti-biofouling, electrowetting, icephobic and even in drag reductions (Bushnell & Moore, 1991; Cao, Jones, Sikka, Wu & Gao, 2009; Carlborg & van der Wijngaart, 2010; Carré & Mittal, 2009; Y. Huang, Sarkar & Chen, 2010a; R. Karmouch, Coude, Abel & Ross, 2009). However, the most important challenge faced by industries is their feasibility large scale in an effective an economical manner."

The aim of the project was the development of an electroforming process for the production of medical implants out of gold. To prove the applicability of this technology, tympanostomy tubes were chosen as demonstrators. These barbell-shaped tubes are usually produced mechanically; of silicone or, for higher therapeutic demands, of metal ? gilded silver or gilded stainless steel. Gold electroforming of the tubes as an alternative manufacturing process would reduce the expenditures for the mechanical preparation and lower the corrosion susceptibility significantly. To obtain electroformed gold tubes of the desired shape, the following steps are necessary: fabrication of a negative template by drilling holes with countersinks in an insulated aluminium sheet, electroforming process, removal of the aluminium by using a sodiumhydroxide solution. For the optimisation of the shape and surface quality of the tubes respectively the simplification of the manufacturing process, various parameters were tested, e.g. aluminium quality and sheet thickness, type of insulation layer, substrate processing, hydrodynamic conditions, type of electroforming electrolyte, electrodes position, etc. The manufactured tubes were characterised in view of thickness distribution, hardness, surface roughness and purity in comparison to mechanically produced reference tubes. From the results obtained during the project it can be concluded that electroforming processes can be easily adopted for the manufacture of medical implants. The time-consuming electroforming process is by far compensated by the simultaneous production of an arbitrary number of implants.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a technically feasible continuous single-stage leaching and thickening system for extracting manganese from umber by a sulfuric acid-ferrous sulfate process; the cocurrent leaching and thickening system proved simpler to operate and control than the countercurrent leaching and thickening system developed earlier" Related tests investigated the use of a centrifuge to replace thickeners for separating the product liquor from are residues and compared several chemical agents for removing iron from the pregnant manganese leach solutions. Results of Some exploratory autoclaving tests are also given.
