Salt-type minerals are usually floated with anionic and cationic collectors. Flotation of a number of systems has been reported to remarkably increase above the concentrations where surface precipitation of collector-metal salt is initiated. Some studies attribute this phenomenon to heterocoagulation of oppositely charged collector colloid and mineral particles. In this study, examples are given on boron minerals to demonstrate that the high flotation region occurs when particles, colloidal precipitates and bubbles acquire a similar charge which induces Van der Waals interactions resulting in hydrophobic bonding.

Tata Steel Netherlands (TSN) aims to reduce its CO2 emissions by 35–40 per cent by 2030 and become CO2 neutral by 2045. A first step to reach these targets is via the utilisation of an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), which will run on a mixture of high proportion of Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) and scrap. For an EAF operation, optimisation of slag chemistry is important to achieve the right mix of basicity (for refining especially dephosphorisation), foaming, volume (rate) and refractory life. Slag composition and rate can vary widely depending on the process variables like charge mix, charge composition, feeding rate, oxygen lancing, external carbon injection/addition, fluxing and refractory erosion/corrosion. Moreover, it is important to note that the slag composition and rate are ‘transient’ parameters and change throughout the heat. This makes all the dependent phenomena and/or outcomes transient as well. To describe all these effects simultaneously and be able to realistically simulate the EAF operations, a validated dynamic process model is important in the absence of real plant data. In this study, a validated dynamic EAF process model based on the concept of Effective Equilibrium Reaction Zone (EERZ) has been utilised to analyse the impact of high DRI industrial scale EAF operations on the transient slag characteristics – including slag volume (rate), composition, phases, solid fraction and viscosity. Simultaneously, the model is able to predict the impact on steel and offgas characteristics. Case studies were performed with 70 per cent DRI:30 per cent scrap mix considering both low and high-grade DRI. Both melting and refining aspects of the process including continuous feeding, arcing program, carbon addition, fluxing and oxy-lancing were considered.

Bioleaching of marmatite with various mixed cultures of microorganisms was investigated. The experiments were carried out in shaking flasks with iron-free nutrient and the pulp density of 10% wt/vol at the temperature of 30?. The results show that zinc is preferentially leached before iron. The leaching rate of zinc with the mixed culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans is 62% in 18 days. The leaching rate of zinc with the mixed culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans is nearly the same as that with the mixed culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans (45% versus 50%). SEM and EDX analysis of the leaching residues indicate that a solid product layer composed of iron sulfide, elemental sulfur and jarosite accumulates in the mineral surface and becomes a barrier to the dissolution of marmatite. The bioleaching of marmatite follows the shrinking core product layer model. When the product layer increases and becomes insoluble, the leaching rate is controlled by the diffusion through the product layer and slows down. When the product layer decreases or becomes a porous layer, the leaching rate is controlled by chemical reaction and enhanced dramatically.

"IntroductionWITH THE DISCOVERY of natural radioactivity at the end of the 19th century, and the design of equipment for the detection of this phenomenon, radioactivity surveys bad their inception. Early in the 20th century it was found that almost all rocks are radioactive to a certain degree. This radioactivity is due to the nuclear disintegration of six naturally radioactive elements: potassium, thorium, uranium, rubidium, samarium, and lutecium.The radioactivity of these elements manifests itself by the emission of some concentration of alpha, beta, and gamma 'rays'. Of these, the alpha and beta 'rays' are, respectively, helium atoms and electrons, while the gamma 'rays' are short wave length x-rays generated in the nuclear disintegration by the transformation of mass into energy.The alpha and beta rays, being particles of matter, are stopped ve• easily by material barriers, but gamma rays are extremely penetrating and they will pass through a foot or more of rock or several inches of lead.The radioactivity may be detected by the causing of ionization by the radiation. The radiation detectors may be divided into four classes: ionization chambers, proportion al counters, and Geiger counters, all of which use gas for ionization, and scintillation counters, in which a solid is ionized. The basic principle of all these detectors is the same; the difference lies in the method used to measure the degree of ionization produced by the rays. Over the past several years, Somerset International has successfully installed over 20 patented Sub325® Fine Coal Recovery Systems in the United States, Australia, Canada and Russia. These installations recover between 5 TPH and 40 TPH for the host sites. In addition to the increased revenue from the direct recovery of a recirculating load (Screen Bowl “Insurance”, Direct Recovery vs. Indirect Recovery via Recycle, CPSA 2020), host sites have seen benefits ranging from improved operation of refuse equipment to a reduction in the solids content of the refuse streams. As Somerset has improved ultra-fine coal recovery through the introduction of Sub325® Effluent Flotation and, most recently, the Sub325® Effluent Settler™, the amount of coal that has been recovered from these systems has increased by up to as much as 25%. Many host sites have taken a sense of ownership in the Somerset system and consider it to be a critical circuit in the overall optimal performance of the plant. In the past year, Somerset has taken the initiative to expand upon the capabilities of the Sub325® Fine Coal Recovery System, primarily the Sub325® Solid Bowl Centrifuge, to include Refuse Tailings Dewatering to allow for co-mingled refuse disposal. As slurry ponds and boreholes are becoming difficult to impossible to permit and operate, there is a need for a reliable, low-maintenance, continuous operation that can produce a handleable refuse cake. Refuse tailings disposal applications are by no means limited to coal plants and impoundments. Somerset has successfully tested at iron ore and phosphate locations throughout the world and have begun commercial installations. The ability to dewater -325 mesh material, whether it be coal, coal refuse, iron ore tailings, or something else, is a vital piece of processing capability for the continued production of mining operations across the globe. This paper highlights the success that Somerset has had in the coal industry worldwide as well as the initial successes with phosphate, iron ore, and copper tailings (patent pending).

An environmentally clean and virtually waste-less technology for treatment of domestic solid waste and other toxic chloride-containing materials has been developed and proven on a full scale by the Gintsvetmet Institute in cooperation with some other Russian organizations. The proposed process resolves the acute and globally significant problem of dioxin formation. The purpose of the proposed technology is to ensure such destruction of the structural lattice of toxic compounds that would guarantee irreversible transformation of the resultant substances to prevent formation of dioxins. The preconditions that are required to achieve this purpose are: temperature of >125O0C; an oxidant excess coefficient of >I .05; a certain retention time of the products under these conditions (ADZ s); and thermal instantaneousness of the process involving a transition with no intermediate phase. These conditions were achieved with the experimental development of the Vanyukov furnace design commonly used for sparged smelting processes at non-ferrous metallurgical plants in Russia and Kazakhstan.

Amine collectors with different structures and length of carbon-chain have been widely used in oxide minerals flotation. In this paper, we synthesized one kind of binary amine, N-dodecylethyl- enediamine, and studied its flotation performance. From the results, we can see N-dodecylethylenediamine which has excellent frothability, is a new type of chelating surfactants. And it also has fine catchability to quartz and hematite. The recoveries of quartz and hematite increase with the augment of N-dodecylethylenediamine concentration. When the dosage of collector reaches 100g/t, the recoveries of quartz and hematite achieve 95.30% and 87.89% respectively. Meanwhile, the influence of pH on the flotation recovery of hematite is studied and test results showed that, as pH increases, the flotation recovery rises until pH=9. And the recovery reaches its maximum in alkalescence. The collector has better flotation capability to quartz than to hematite. And the maximum recovery of quartz is gained in alkaline media, which reaches 97.87%. Finally, the flotation mechanism of N-dodecylethylenediamine is discussed through the measurement of infrared spectroscopy.

Bacteria, algae and fungi react to heavy metals in their environment by immobilizing, mobilizing and/or transforming metals. Microorganisms carry out these changes by (1) precipitating metals outside of the microbial cell, (2) binding and complexing metals to the outside of the microbial cell's protective coating, (3) accumulating metals inside of the microbial cell, or (4) transforming metals by oxidation, reduction, methylation or demethylation. Most of these mechanisms are operative in constructed aerobic and anaerobic wetlands for metal's remediation. Several more advanced biotechnologies for metal's removal from aqueous streams have been introduced, but have not been widely accepted commercially.

"More than 400 plants in the world are able to accumulate nickel in their aerial parts at concentrations higher than 10 g per kg of dry biomass. Then, nickel (Ni) can be recovered from the biomass of these hyperaccumulator plants. Agromining is a chain consisting in growing such plants and recovering metal and has been developed thanks to the combined know-how of agronomy and hydrometallurgy. Plants can be grown on serpentine soils, containing rather high concentrations of Ni, on sterile heaps or on contaminated soils. This crop enables us to extract Ni from secondary resources, and to improve soil quality by lowering its metal content. For example, Alyssum murale can be grown at the field scale in the Balkans, at yields corresponding to 110 kg Ni per hectare.Hydrometallurgical processes have been designed from the lab scale to the pilot scale to produce nickel salts: ANSH (ammonium and nickel sulphate hexahydrate), nickel sulphate, acetate, etc. and so on. These salts are used for surface treatment and in the paint and chemical industry. Ni salts are prepared from ashes, after plant calcination. Processes are based on the conventional methods of hydrometallurgy: acid leaching followed by different precipitation steps. These processes will be presented, as well as the pilot scale design. A life cycle assessment has been performed and clearly shows the environmental interest of this approach as a potential part of an anti-erosion strategy. An economic assessment has proved process feasibility and the final step is the launching of a start-up. At the moment, the approach is widened to other metals (cadmium, cobalt) and rare earth elements (REEs)."

O aço inoxidável ferrítico tipo 430 estabilizado com Nb, com e sem recozimento após laminação a quente, foi laminado a frio e submetido a recozimentos isotérmicos em temperaturas de 650, 700, 750 e 800°C por tempos variando entre 10 e 86400 s. A quantificação da fração recristalizada foi realizada pelo modelo de JMAK e pela microdureza ao longo do recozimento. A evolução da textura foi analisada via técnica de EBSD. Ocorreu o refino de grão após a recristalização, resultando em um tamanho médio de 8 mm. A temperatura de recristalização aconteceu a 750°C e esta teve maior efeito na recristalização que o tempo. Os expoentes de Avrami se situaram entre 0.8 e 1.2, significando nucleação em contorno de grão. A taxa de nucleação e de crescimento do grão diminuiu continuamente com o tempo. Em relação à textura, observou-se um aumento da intensidade das componentes (111)[121] e (111)[011] da fibra g e diminuição na intensidade da fibra a de deformação. Um modelo de cinética de recristalização do aço tipo 430 estabilizado com nióbio que leva em conta os processos de nucleação e crescimento foi obtido.

Measuring cyanide in the leach liquors associated with high copper and/or sulfide ores is a non-trivial exercise. It is well known that copper complexes with cyanide and reduces the amount of cyanide available for gold leaching. What is not so well known is that the rhodanine end point overestimates the amount of cyanide available for leaching in the presence of copper. Sulfide ions also interfere with a rhodanine end point titration, although this is less of a problem as the black silver sulfide precipitate formed clearly indicates to the operator that something is wrong. Thiosulfate, which forms readily from the alkaline oxidation of sulfides, causes an overestimation of the cyanide available for leaching due to the formation of Ag(S2O3)-. The net result of these observations is that rhodanine is rarely of value as an end point indicator in complex solutions. It generally overestimates the amount of cyanide available, providing plant metallurgists with a false sense of security. Potentiometric titrations are generally much more capable of accurately measuring cyanide in complex solutions. The interfering effect of copper can be resolved and it is even possible to estimate the copper concentration using the inflexions associated with the titration of CN- + Cu(CN)43- versus Cu(CN)32-. Using the potentiometric method sulfide ions can be determined before the cyanide measurement is made due to the formation of AgS2, although the electrode will foul with repeated measurements. Thiosulfate can also be distinguished from cyanide with a potentiometric titration. Rhodanine and potentiometric titrations are both affected by the pH of the liquor. At pH 9.2 half the cyanide will be present as CN- and half as HCN(aq) with only the CN- being titratable. This does not hold in the presence of a buffer active around pH 9. In the presence of sufficient buffer, both the CN- and HCN(aq) are titrated. Ca(OH)+ may buffer the pH when large amounts of lime have been added.

In this investigation, the aging effect on creep behavior of A12024-10%SiC composite fabricated by powder metallurgy was studied. P/M bars were manufactured by hot powder extrusion method at 450°C with a ratio of 16 to 1. Creep specimens were over-aged at 187 ºC for 43 h. It was found that almost full density composite with relatively homogenous distribution of reinforcing particles throughout the aluminum alloy matrix could be attained by direct powder extrusion process. Creep tests were conducted at temperatures from 275 to 325°C under stresses from 25 to 60 MPa. The analysis of the creep mechanism determined that dislocation glide was the predominant mechanism of plastic deformation. The activation energy of the creep process was found to be higher than that of lattice self-diffusion in pure aluminum.

"Descending several stories down a metal staircase into a shaft spanning a quarter city block -- soon to become Roosevelt Light Rail Station in Seattle, WA -- visitors are greeted with four perfectly round, precast concrete-lined horizontal holes leading deep into the earth. The sound of water trickling out from a small drainage trough can be heard over the faint echoes of construction within. Upon entering, the light is dim, but the air is clear with barely a dust particle flowing through the sunbeams. This type of air quality is only accomplished with diligent controls, and JCM Northlink, the company in charge of building the Northgate Link Extension Project, is taking those measures seriously.Commissioned by Sound Transit, JCM is a joint venture of three companies: Jay Dee Contractors, Frank Coluccio Construction Co. and Michels Corp. The tunnels JCM constructed are intended to provide fast, reliable underground rail service, as well as relieve one of the region’s most congested traffic areas. The $440 million project will connect the Northgate, Roosevelt and University District neighborhoods north of Seattle to the downtown corridor and SeaTac airport further south.The scope of this project includes excavation for two light rail stations, boring of two parallel 5 km- (3.3-mile) long light rail tunnels in six runs and the construction of 23 cross passages. Begun in 2014, Sound Transit estimates that crews excavated more than 382,000 m3 (500,000 cu yds) of soil and installed 7,352 precast concrete tunnel liner rings during the shaft construction and boring phase. Now that tunnel boring is complete, JCM is in the process of constructing the cross passages, which act as maintenance areas and escape routes for passengers. Throughout the entire process, the company has utilized atomized mist to control particle emissions.“Our dust control needs change at every phase of the project and don’t go away until the project is fully complete,” said a JCM safety representative. “We found that different dust suppression technologies were needed at different intervals, but atomized mist seemed to fulfill our needs at every step.”"

"Mining operations generate an enormous amount of data that is difficult to organize, analyze and act on. These data require an extremely broad range of experts to investigate and manage the cross-disciplinary information. The data collects in paper files, diverse databases, historians, stand-alone applications, and excel files. This collection of sources represents everything from monthly, weekly, or daily inputs to real-time feeds or sporadic unscheduled entries. With the operational complexities ever increasing and fewer engineers per mine, an efficient operation is becoming more and more challenging. Engineers are typically burdened with data collection, clean up, and administrative efforts leaving very limited time for engineering assessment and/or optimization analysis. Often optimization becomes limited to the analysis of equipment uptime through existing field automation systems. A great portion of the field data is tucked away in historians seldom reaching those engineers who might leverage the data. Few mine operators have the time or budget to re-architect their operations data collection or management practice, so solutions must enable improvements without requiring expensive or time-consuming implementation. This presentation highlights examples where the aforementioned challenges are addressed using a solution framework designed to enable: 1) data integration and connectivity, 2) monitoring and opportunity recognition, and 3) engineering workflow automation. The initiative extends the concepts and success proven in the automation market segment to all disciplines across the mine operations. INTRODUCTIONThe mining industry by its very nature spends a great deal of its capital on equipment maintenance and replacement. In addition, periodic shutdowns due to equipment failure are typically very costly in terms of interrupted operations. Keeping mining equipment running at peak performance and avoiding costly shutdowns can make a huge difference in the overall return from mining operations. Today, information can be make available that can go a long way towards spotting equipment issues and permitting timely intervention to avoid costly unplanned shutdowns. That said, gathering all of the information from numerous points on many different pieces of equipment necessary to enhance overall equipment effectiveness presents its own daunting issues."

"The use of emf measurements to derive classical thermochemical data has been in use for many years. The reaction associated with electrochemical process is harnessed in a galvanic cell and energy involved measured in terms of electromotive force. The property requirements of sensor electrodes used differ for various aqueous, molten salt and solid electrolyte systems. The electrodes for molten salt electrolytes need special care for construction. This paper describes the studies carried out using an Ag/ AgCI reference electrode. This electrode was used to measure the solubility of compounds in molten salt electrolytes. The results obtained using this electrode are in excellent agreement with the values from chemical analysis method.I. IntroductionThe technique of obtaining a metal from its oxides by electrolysis is more than a century old process now. In these processes, it has been well established that for halide electrolytes, only the dissolved oxides are available for the dissociation at the electrode to release the metal during electrolysis. Therefore, the solubility of metallic oxides in the molten salt electrolytes is an important parameter which determines the economical and technical viability of these processes. The widely used molten salts systems in halides are fluorides and chlorides. The fluoride electrolyte system is used in our present study.The viability of obtaining aluminum alloys by in-situ electrochemical processing has been outlined in our earlier publications[1-8]. Studies on the solubility of various alloying element compounds is a part of our ongoing research efforts for the direct production of Al-Li alloys. As mentioned above, the solubility of lithium oxide and lithium carbonate compounds in molten fluoride electrolyte system have studied using EMF technique. The change in potential of the molten electrolyte was measured by a working electrode against the reference electrode with the addition of lithium compound."

The Cornucopia gold quartz veins form a parallel vein system traversing meta-morphic and granodioritic rocks. Field and petrographic evidence suggests that inetasomatism has played an important role both in the emplacement of the grano-diorite and in the formation of the veins. Structurally the veins appear to be related to the major tectonic features of the Wallowa Mountains and to be narrow shear zones rather than filled fissures. Petrographic studies indicate a complex history of formation starting from initial alteration along fractures or joints followed by recurrent fracturing and a quartz-forming stage, and closing with continued shearing and microbrecciation, which permitted the upward percolation of the later ore-forming solutions. The precipitation of ore minerals from these solutions formed ore shoots. Postmineral effects include the injection of Tertiary basaltic dikes, a shght amount of cross faulting, and some movement along the planes of the veins as well as oxidation. Introduction Cornucopia is in the southeastern part of the rugged Wallowa Mountains of northeastern Oregon. It was founded over 50 years ago following the discovery of its system of gold quartz veins. The major veins are roughly parallel and dip into the western side of Pine Valley, which drains the southern slope of the range. Previous operations had cut the upper portion of four major veins with two tunnels over 1000 ft. apart, when the present operating company drove a third tunnel, called the Coulter, at the level of the valley over 1000 ft. lower to intersect the most easterly major vein at over 6200 ft. from the portal. General Geology of District The oldest rocks in the vicinity are metamorphosed sediments and volcanics. These, for the most part, are presumably Mesozoic in age, although some black argillites outcropping along East Pine Creek are considered to be Permian.l,2 These rocks have been deformed and metamorphosed in general to hornfels at the close of the Jurassic. The kinetics of dissolution of nickel matte in the presence of manganese dioxide with silver ions was investigated. The catalytic silver ions enchanced the leaching rate up to a factor of 17. The effects of stirring, temperature, particle size, concentrations of Mn02, silver and ferric ions, and the experimental procedures were studied. Solid residues at various levels of nickel extraction were examined by SEM, TEM, electron micoprobe and X-ray diffraction. These results indicated that the dissolution reaction was topochemical and fits a surface reaction control model. The activation energy was calculated to be 39.15 KJ/mol. The leaching rate of Ni3S2 was independent with stirring rate, but the reaction rate constant was inversely proportional to the initial particle diameter. The order of the reaction rate are 0.41, 0.69, 0.33 with respect to Ag+, Mn4+ and Fe'+ con-centration respectively. Thus a kinetic rate equation was developed. Moreover, we propose a mechanism of silver catalyzed leaching of Ni3S2'

Domestic byproduct fluorine (in fluosilicic acid) availability at various price levels of aluminum fluoride were determined and a contingency availability curve developed. The supply of byproduct fluosilicic acid is restricted in amount to certain geographic regions, where plants processing phosphate rock are located, and the byproduct can be collected. The maximum possible U.S. annual supply, based on potential plant capacities, is 373,400 tons of fluosilicic acid containing 295,400 tons of fluorine. Based on inputs of 5, la, 25, 50, and 100 thousand tons per year, five levels of producing aluminum fluoride from fluosilicic acid (100 percent) were costed. Based on a 12-percent discounted cash flow rate, including the cost of salvaging the fluosilicic acid, the calculated selling price of aluminum fluoride ranged from $233 per ton to $448 per ton. At the higher price, 98 percent of the potential supply of byproduct fluosilicic acid could be used profitably; at the lower price only 46 percent could be used profitably.

Alkali metal is one of the key critical factors that determine the coke degradation. Previous studies on the influence of alkali metal on coke structure were mostly focus on the catalysis of alkali carbonates for coke gasification reaction. Besides, the difference of alkali metal and coke gasification effects on coke degradation was still not clear. Highly reactive coke developed by Nippon Steel was proved to increase the reaction efficiency and to decrease CO2 emission effectively. Therefore, conventional coke and highly reactive coke adsorbed 5% sodium were studied in this paper. Coke degradation tests were undertaken in atmosphere of N2 and CO2. SEM, EDS and XRD were employed to analyze samples. Results showed that the degradation of conventional coke strength by sodium was stronger than highly reactive coke in the atmosphere of N2.
