New technology for on-line particle size analysis of mineral slurries has opened up new applications for particle size measurement. In some cases the particle size distribution of the final concentrate is an important quality issue. This paper discusses established on-line particle size analysis technologies and presents experiences on the use of a new technique employing laser diffraction in several minerals processing operations. The main innovations in the new instrument are a simple dilution system and multiple scattering correction algorithm, which allows wide solids content variations of diluted sample in the measurement cell. Representative sample for laser measurement is produced by a simple and reliable dilution system. The applications discussed are; Blaine number measurement of Fe concentrate before pelletizing, grinding of variable batches of ore and paste thickener control.

In an underground coal mining environment, a frictional ignition may be defined as the ignition of an explosive air/ methane/coal dust mixture by mining machinery. As the use of power loading equipment has become more widespread, frictional ignition incidents have increased. There have been many fatalities and injuries from this cause including the death of eleven miners in Sydney coalfield of Nova Scotia, Canada in 1979. This paper reports on the findings of a preliminary study carried out under the auspices of the Coal Research Laboratories, Department of Energy, Mines and Resources Canada. The objective of this study has been to identify a Longwall face cutting system that is inherently safer than the conventional shearer loaders used in Nova Scotia.

The objective of this paper is to back analyze the August 6th, 2007, collapse at the Crandall Canyon Mine in Utah, in order to better understand the geometric and geomechanical factors that contributed to that collapse. In this work, the LaModel boundary-element program, along with the best available information, is used for the back analysis. To initiate the analysis, a six-step base model of the mining in the Main West area was developed. This base model included a step for each of the critical stages in the mining of this area. Next, calibrated values for the critical input parameters, rock mass stiffness, gob stiffness and coal strength, were developed and optimized based on the best available information. Finally, the model was used to simulate the final mining scenario. As a result of this back analysis, a number of conclusions can be made concerning the mine design and the August 6th collapse: 1) overall, the area was primed for a massive pillar collapse because of the large area of equal-size pillars, 2) the abutment stress from the active retreat sections and the adjacent longwall panels were significant contributors to the collapse and 3) from the modeling alone, it is not clear exactly what triggered the August collapse, although the active mining is a reasonable assumption.

It is predicted that underground coal mines in the Bowen Basin will have a significant rise in heat problems as mines aim to increase production, depth of extraction and length of longwall panels. At an actual Bowen Basin mine, extended longwall panels greater than 4 km in length are planned to be mined at depths with a virgin rock temperature (VRT) of more than 40¦C. Research has been completed into the reasons for the substantial increase in temperature at the face for underground coal mines in the Bowen Basin. An analysis into heat loads produced at the Bowen Basin mine for the development and production phases shows a significant amount of additional cooling will be required to ensure safe working temperatures. All of the major sources of heat, which included both natural and mine induced heating, were considered for the analysis. Maximum heat loads were assessed, together with peak intake surface temperature to determine the maximum cooling capacity required at a Bowen Basin mine. These maximum heat loads were assessed for a specific longwall panel, Longwall A, which extends to over 4.1 km in length and at a maximum depth of over 330 m, resulting in a VRT above 40¦C. The cooling system positional efficiency was analysed, determining that underground cooling via an indirect heat exchanger was preferred to increasing the capacity of the current bulk air cooling (BAC) on the surface. "Raw material management means not only mining and processing of primary raw materials like ores, but means also collecting and processing secondary sources of raw materials. Recycling is one of the most developing field of raw material management in Europe, and its solutions are derived from mineral processing roots and principals. Complexity and challenges of the field of recycling results innovative solutions of material processing- Since European Union identified 20 raw materials as critical (CRM) due to lack of primary sources within the border of the EU, recycling become more recognised as source of different raw materials. WEEE is the waste streams contains many of the critical elements and along them at least 15 different species of plastics of which recycling is delayed by a lack of effective separation technique. Most paper deals with separation methods based on different specific gravity, triboelectric charge or surface properties of plastic species. Plastics however have differences of thermal properties and thermoplastics, duroplasts and elastomers can be recognised. The experiments described in the paper aimed to determine thermo adhesive behaviour of plastic species often identified in WEEE streams for separation purposes. According to the results, some plastic types as PS, PP. PC or PVC and PET pairs are possible to easily separate from each other, however different additives are changing thermo adhesive properties of most of the plastics that makes industrial process difficult to develop. Along thermo adhesive behaviour, combination of physical interaction can be used to enhance separation selectivity.INTRODUCTIONPlastics has a relatively long term of history as a light, multi-functional material in construction, packaging, automotive industry and electric and electronic products. There are a numerous types of plastic species can be used for various applications therefore they amount are growing from year to year. This quantity however become part of the waste stream and while metal recycling has been done for decades due to its economic value - cheap plastic parts are less desirable as secondary products. In 2013 an annual 5% of plastic production growth has been estimated with a base data of 265 million tonnes at 2010 (Guiqing & Zhenming, 2013). Since landfill requirements are increasing while—especially in Europe where actual regulations are trying to deflect waste from landfills - landfill capacities are decreasing, costs are become more and more expensive, Applications like energy production based on plastics as a fuel or recycling are some of the options can be applied. Direct incineration of plastics are applied at many plants - in most cases where waste consist of dangerous substances are incinerated because plastics high calorific value helps correct average mixture composition enable operators reaching high enough temperature for combined power and heat generation while most of substances—like PAH, PCB or dioxins—are destroyed. Another path is using low temperature reductive cracking due to pyrolysis process, however the chance having higher concentrate of carcinogen substances in the products are higher since it applies around 400°C during the process."

Most of the reported coal spontaneous combustion events occur in surface and underground mines where low rank coals (i.e., subbituminous and lower for this particular studies) are extracted indicating their high propensities for spontaneous combustion. Low rank coals have high moisture content (15 to 45%) and are capable of absorbing more moisture in dried condition. However, it is hard to induce the initial stage of self-heating process for the low rank coal using the current laboratory R70 testing method — a method widely used in the coal industry. Like a sponge, dry low rank coals can absorb water vapor in the air while the heat contained in the moist air is transferred to coal and served as the required activation energy to initiate the coal self-heating process. In order to prove this theorem and quantify the effects, the R70 adiabatic oxidation testing method has been improved to introduce a controlled moist flow into the coal reaction vessel. Tests using the new method and its setup on low rank coals showed that the initial self-heating process of coal sample can be greatly accelerated by the added water vapor — impossible with the regular R70 method. Once the self-heating is sustained, the removal of air moisture can further accelerate the process.

"Underground coal mining in the U.S. is conducted in numerous regions where previous workings exist above and/or below an actively mined seam. Miners know that overlying or underlying fully extracted coal areas, also known as gob regions, can result in abutment stresses that affect the active mining. If there was no full extraction, and the past mining consists entirely of intact pillars, the stresses on the active seam are usually minimal. However, experience has shown that in some situations there has been sufficient yielding in overlying or underlying pillar systems to cause stress transfer to the adjoining larger pillars or barriers, which in turn, transfer significant stresses onto the workings of the active seam. In other words, the overlying or underlying pillar system behaves as a ""pseudo gob."" The presence of a pseudo gob is often unexpected, and the consequences can be severe. This paper presents several case histories, summarized briefly below, that illustrate pseudo gob phenomenon:• Pillar rib degradation at a West Virginia mine at 1100-foot (335 m) depth that contributed to a rib roll fatality.• Pillar rib deterioration at a Western Kentucky mine at 570-foot (175 m) depth that required pillar size adjustment and installation of supplemental bolting.• Roof deterioration at an eastern Kentucky mine at 1300- foot ( 400 m) depth that stopped mine advance and required redirecting the section development.• Coal burst on development at an eastern Kentucky mine at 1700-foot (520 m) depth that had no nearby pillar recovery.• Coal burst on development at a West Virginia mine at the relatively shallow depth of 1100 feet (335 m) that also had no nearby pillar recovery.The paper provides guidance so that when an operation encounters a potential pseudo gob stress interaction the hazard can be mitigated based on an understanding of the mechanism encountered.INTRODUCTIONThe U.S. underground coal mining industry has conducted mining in multiple seam environments, where the active mining has underlying or overlying old workings at varying interburden distances, throughout its history. Often no serious consequences arise from the multiple seam mining. However, sometime mines have been confronted with hazards from underlying or overlying workings that include localized roof and rib failure, pillar system failures through propagating roof falls and floor heave, and also pillar bursts."

The Bureau of Mines studied the purification of commercially available yttrium by melting it in a 100-kw electron-beam furnace. Button-scale melts were made to determine the ultimate purification that could be attained by melting yttrium at 1,733° to 1,770° C at low pressure (0.05 to 0.1 micron) for 1 to 120 minutes. In addition, numerous melts were made to study the effect of doping yttrium with carbon, 17 selected metallic additions, and 3 compounds. Except for nickel and zirconium, the metallic impurities in yttrium were lowered significantly on extended treatment; silicon was lowered only slightly. The nonmetallic impurities} oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon, were not lowered except on short exposures. In isolated instances, the oxygen content was lowered from 5,860 ppm to about 5,000 ppm. In most instances the carbon con-tent was lowered from 545 to about 220 ppm in 20 minutes and then increased again. It was concluded that yttrium cannot be purified by direct heating or by the doping technique employed.

The Pilbara region, located in the north-west of Western Australia, is significant as the second-largest source of iron ore on the planet. Iron ore mines owned and operated by Pilbara Iron are located within the Hamersley Basin. This paper refers to the Greater Paraburdoo mines, the 4WEST and 4EAST pits, located on the southern margin of the Hamersley Basin. The groundwater model refers to ephemeral watercourses: Seven Mile and Pirraburdoo creeks, which are adjacent to the two pits, and Ratty Springs, located upstream from 4WEST and within Pirraburdoo creek. The spring and creeks hold cultural heritage significance for local Aboriginal communities. Two of these, the Gobawarrah Minduarra Yinhawanga (GMY) and Innawonga native title claim groups, initiated hydrological work on the two creeks and Ratty Springs, with the aim of determining the affects of dewatering on the natural water flows of these systems. The numerical model used to simulate drawdown in the Pirraburdoo and Seven Mile Creeks was derived from PMWIN Pro software and covered an area of 77 km2. The modelling period was from January 1998 to December 2004, and the prediction period was from January 2005 to December 2015. The model has four layers and incorporated effects caused by mining voids, 4WEST and 4EAST pits, creek bed material, weathered bedrock below creeks and surrounding banded iron formations (BIF). The model has been calibrated using the trial-and-error method set down by Middelmis et al (2001). The current dewatering schedule (12 ML/day) in the 4WEST and 4EAST mining areas does not affect the water table levels in the adjacent creeks significantly or for any considerable periods of time. However, changes to mine plans may occur, for example, in response to changed commodity price and may lead to significant increase in rates of vertical advancement. This, in turn, affects dewatering schedules, as greater vertical advancement requires increased dewatering effort. When an accelerated mine plan is applied to the model and dewatering rates increased to 18 ML/day, drawdowns in the creeks are more noticeable. The model has therefore helped to indicate the extent to which increased dewatering rates may be acceptable, especially in terms of immediate and longer-term damage to riparian species, ie Melaleuca and Eucalypt. Predictions from the model may also allow mine planners to schedule decreased rates of vertical advancement, where these are required to meet environmental constraints.

"Surface support is a key component of most ground support systems which are applied as a means of reducing the risk of rockfall occurrence and maintaining serviceability of mine development. Surface support has two primary functions: distributing the applied load throughout the system by providing connection between rock bolts retaining smaller rocks that unravel between rock bolts.Confinement is also provided to the rock mass, which may increase its capacity to resist further degradation or loosening.Surface support has been routinely installed in most underground mines around the world for many years, yet the operators are still not always certain which type is best suited for deformable ground conditions. A number of factors need to be taken into consideration prior to selecting the type of surface support liner, such as its capacity, availability, practicality of installation, manual handling and loading conditions (static or dynamic) to ensure the system’s optimal performance in terms of safety and costs.This paper presents an overview of the surface support types currently used in underground mines in Australia. Shotcrete, weld mesh, high-tensile chainlink mesh, reinforced weld mesh and high energy absorption (HEA) mesh are discussed. A detailed description of each system is provided in terms of capacity, energy absorption, installation cycle and costs. The cost of each system has been normalised to the units of energy absorbed. As the gold price, and consequently ore reserves, improved in the late 1970's, a programme of upgrading the gold recovery circuit at the Phoenix treatment plant at Central Norseman was initiated. The introduction of oxidised ore with a high clay content from the North Royal open cut caused a reduction in thickening and filtering capacities, which in turn restricted plant throughput and increased gold losses in the residue solutions. Test work into alternative washing facilities showed that the installation of a five stage counter current decantation system would restore throughput and reduce soluble gold losses. Installation of the system achieved the objectives of increased plant tonnage, increased proportions of the high grade oxidised ore in the mill feed and decreased gold losses in the residue waters.

Carbon injection into metallurgical slag is important in electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking for foamy slag practices and in nonferrous slag cleaning operations. The current publication presents kinetic data for coal injection into EAF slag to understand the interaction between injected carbon and metallurgical slag. Coal particles were injected into EAF slag and the kinetics were followed by gas and slag analysis. The results were analyzed, in terms of fundamental rate equations for each possible reaction step, as a function of temperature and slag composition.

"IntroductionTHE PINCHER CREEK gas condensate field, in Township 3, Range 28, and Townships 3 and 4, Range 29, West of the Fourth Meridian, was discovered in 1947 by the Canadian Gulf Oil Company with the completion of Pincher Creek No. 1 well in the Madison lime-stone of Mississippian age.This discovery was the result of a great deal of detailed seismic work in the area and is a credit to the geophysical personnel of the Company. The depth of the reservoir varies from 7,400 feet to 8,200 feet subsea, with the established water level at -8,200 feet. The predicted depth was but a scant 100 feet from that found in the discovery well, at 11, 705 feet. Since the discovery of the reservoir, three additional wells have penetrated the Madison limestone and have further verified the original •seismic interpretation of the limits of this reservoir.To date, •only a very small amount of gas has been produced from this field. Consequently, the reservoir studies that have been made so far are predominantly based on investigations of the phase behaviour of the fluid and physical characteristics of the reservoir rock. In view of the above limitations, it has been necessary to set up and perform model reservoir studies with the fluids and to recover as much core from the productive Madison limestone as possible in order that it might be analysed by conventional laboratory technique and be subjected to detailed microscopic geological examination."

"IntroductionThe Hat Creek coal field contains low-grade coal deposits which are the thickest in the world. The diamond drilling and geophysical surveys conducted by B.C. Hydro over the last six years have indicated in excess of 2 billion tonnes of sub-bituminous to lignitic coal. The coal field is in the Interior Plateau Dry Belt, about 240 km northeast of Vancouver, and contains two explored, nearsurface coal deposits amenable to surface mining (Fig. I). The No. I deposit contains approximately 740 million tonnes of coal at 17.71 MJ / kg, or 7,600 Btu/lb, at 34.82% ash and 24% moisture. The No. 2 deposit to the south contains appreciably more coal resources at somewhat lower grade, but it has not been explored so extensively because of its higher stripping ratio. Therefore most of the exploration activities to date have been directed toward the development of the No. I deposit. The No . I coal deposit has been selected as the source of fuel for a proposed thermal powerplant to be built about 5 km east of the deposit. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the data obtained from the diamond drilling and the geophysical logging in the No. I deposit between 1974 and 1979. An attempt is made to explain the depositional environment of the Hat Creek coal measures. Because the understanding of the depositional environment in.a particular basin is essentially an evaluation of all the geologic properties of the area, the available geological information in the No. I deposit has been compiled on the basis of consistent criteria. This includes data on the lithology of the coal measures, thickness and areal distribution of the elastic sediments, and on the changes in the megascopic stratigraphic profile based on geophysical correlation. The palynopetrographic relationship and detailed sedimentological aspects are not examined in this paper. Such studies should provide important information relating the causal vegetal and chemical responses of the coals to -environmental changes. Extensive deposition of surficial materials during de-glaciation left most of the area of the Upper Hat Creek Valley devoid of bedrock exposures. Structural and stratigraphic features are hidden beneath glacial deposits and/or post-Eocene volcanics. As a result, the geological interpretation of the Hat Creek coal basin has been based primarily on drilling and geophysical data. Because of this, any explanation of the depositional environment details is tentative until the deposits are stripped for development."

"Heavy metal containing residues are typically hazardous wastes because on the one hand, a deposition gets more and more complicated and on the other hand, the large amounts of metals like Zn, Cu, Fe and Pb represent a significant value. Thus, a post-treatment of these materials with the recovery/recycling of the metals and stabilization of the waste is not only ecological but often also economical. The therefore typically applied recycling processes utilize pyrometallurgical steps, where carbon or carbon monoxide from fossil coal and coke is used as a reducing agent, which results in large amounts of CO2 emissions. An alternative option is the application of a hydrogen-rich gas emitted in biomass utilization processes as a carbon-neutral reducing agent. Investigations in a retort process which were done at different temperatures and times showed excellent results concerning the achievable reduction rates and final contents of the heavy metals for various residues.IntroductionNowadays heavy metal containing residues like electric arc furnace dust (EAFD), dust from cupola furnaces, waelz slag, etc. are declared as hazardous wastes in a growing number of countries due to the leachability of the heavy metals in these residues. For that reason it is no longer possible to landfill these materials or use them for road construction or disposal works. Some land filling activities, carried out until now, have only been realizable because of some process modifications or cost intensive post-treatment steps of these residues. But the disposal capacities for such materials are decreasing, therefore increasing the prices. The second point for the growing disposal limitations is the stringent environmental legislations and regulations, which restrict the number and amounts of materials which can be dumped [1 – 5].From the other point of view these heavy metal containing residues usually have high contents of zinc, lead, iron, etc., which represent a significant value and therefore a big potential to recover these metals. This is why in recent years the number of recycling processes and the amount of recycled heavy metal containing residues have continuously increased. These recycling processes have the target to recover the valuable metals from the residual materials in the form of a saleable product as well as the stabilization of the slag produced in these processes [5, 6]."

High productivity of the equipment employed is one of the key factors in reducing production cost in mining. One of the best ways to achieve it is an increase in availability. In order to identify the most adverse factors affecting it, reliability and maintainability analysis ought to be done. If its results are to be conclusive, a sufficient amount of credible and consistent data is indispensable. Following the experience from field studies done in underground mines, this paper discusses the current status of failure and maintenance reporting, as well as problems encountered. It exposes the importance of adequate data collection on failures and downtime as well as it reviews the benefits of analysis based on such material. The question of benchmarking with regards to mining equipment performance is also addressed. The paper concludes with some recommendations on data collection and processing, as well as stresses the need to standardize the most important reliability/ maintenance notions throughout the mining industry and to conceive appropriate performance measures.

The effect of delay time on fragmentation has been discussed for a long period but rarely in a satisfactory and unbiased way. Despite the efforts of many researchers, delay selection for fragmentation improvement or optimisation remains a controversial issue. Large-scale tests have been plagued with scarcity and scatter of observations, while small-scale tests have been associated with boundary effects and energy losses. Theoretical work is often used to produce explanations for available measurements or tries to simplify wave propagation and wave interaction to guide observation and practical work. The present work analyses results obtained from a relatively large number of small-scale experiments in blocks made of grout, and re-analyses results of previous experiments, to conclude on the effect of delay on fragmentation. It is shown that the main contribution of the delay is found in the fragmentation of the larger fragments of the blast, while the small fractions show almost no effect. Samples, where copper liners were used to inhibit penetration of detonation products in the rock mass, showed effect of delay only when short times were used and steady but poor fragmentation when long delays were used. Based on small-scale experiments, it appears that the fragmentation is optimised when a hole fires prior to the radial cracks, produced by the previous hole, reach the free face of the blast. Gas penetration may result in the development of few more fractures that affect the fragmentation of the largest particles of the blast.CITATION:Katsabanis, P D and Omidi, O, 2015. Based on the 2010-2019 Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident report database, 91% of reported ground control accident in the US longwall mines were caused by gateroad roof instability. This can be related to the significant changes in loading conditions that gateroads are subject to from the development to the longwall abutment loading phases, combined with the thinly bedded shale roof, found in many US longwall coal mines. One of the challenges in designing efficient support systems is to understand the roof instability mechanisms along with support-roof interactions under this complex loading condition. Field monitoring of roof displacement and stress changes coupled with detailed analyses using numerical models are well-documented techniques to study the causes of roof instabilities. However, traditional modeling techniques require additional calibration to simulate delamination and buckling of shale roof, one of the main roof instability mechanisms in longwall mines. One alternative modeling technique is the UDEC Bonded Block Method (BBM) where bedded roof and support interactions can be explicitly captured. This paper presents the development of a BBM model of a longwall entry at a 180 m depth of cover with a three-entry gateroad layout along with roof extensometer monitoring results. The models are validated against the monitoring data, showing the potential for BBM numerical models capturing the complex roof and support system interactions to assist with optimizing gateroad layouts and support systems.

Coal is the most widely used fossil fuel in the world, providing more than 25% of world?s electrical power. Since, the behavior of coal particles in crushing and grinding circuits, concentration operations, and solid-liquid separations is strongly dependent on size, a reliable and accurate measurement of particle size and particle size distribution (PSD) is a vital aspect in coal cleaning. This paper presents a method for the characterization of ground coal particles using image analysis. We utilized a machine vision (MV) approach that used a document scanner as the imaging device and a user-coded ImageJ plug-in that processed the image and automated the PSD analysis and output results in textual and graphical forms. This approach used a sum of volumes (SVolume) as weighting factor for particle length as the primary dimension of analysis and was successfully applied to ground coal. The plug-in was further improved for computational performance in this study. Mechanical sieving (MS) was also used to compare the MV results. MV results showed that the PSD of ground coal followed a uni-modal normal distribution, and the log-normal plot against particle size exhibited a linear trend for most of the range. MS results, however, had three linear segments, when the width-based sieving results were transformed to lengths by applying the shape factor (width/length), but a definite deviation between the PSD plots was observed. This study demonstrates successful application of the MV SVolume approach for PSD analysis of ground coal, which can be extended to similar particulate minerals and products. Most mines using backfill routinely carry out quality control (QC) testing of backfill mixes with unconfined compression test cylinders. This is true for paste operations, hydraulic fill operations, and cemented rockfill operations worldwide. However, a large number of mines simply do not prepare and test the backfill samples in a consistent manner and fail to properly analyze or interpret the test results. Conventional concrete test criteria are not applicable given the differences in the mix constituents and the fact that a large number of the backfill QC test cylinders typically fail to achieve the target strength. Standard industry practices are needed to improve the analysis and interpretation of QC test results and to provide a better means of determining if the backfill is achieving its intended target strength. This paper will attempt to lay the groundwork for standard industry practices and will address several key questions raised by operators, such as how laboratory test data compares to in-stope performance, and how many QC tests should fail before a red flag should be raised. INTRODUCTION Although paste backfill is widely used throughout the mining industry, cemented rockfill (CRF) remains as the backfill of choice in places like Nevada where very poor ground conditions mandate the use of underhand mining. The safety and stability of undercut entries beneath backfill is a function of the quality of the cemented fill, which is typically assured through routine quality control testing. In the absence of a backfill quality standard, most mines rely on concrete standards to design and interpret their backfill quality control programs. In the USA, these standards are developed and published by organizations such as the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) and the American Concrete Institute (ACI). However, the application of these standards to cemented backfills can be very difficult owing to the high degree of variability in backfill mixes and the resulting variability in test results. To illustrate, the concrete industry standards denote that an acceptable (passing) test result occurs when the average strength of the duplicate test cylinders exceeds the target strength and no single test result deviates from the target strength by more than 10% (ACI 214R). Remedial measures must be taken if three consecutive tests fail. With mine backfills, it is safe to say that these criteria are rarely achievable. A further, more dramatic example is the accepted coefficient of variation for concrete QC cylinders. According to ACI 214R, the coefficient of variation (CV) should range from below 3% (excellent rating) to above 6% (poor rating). However, if this analysis method is applied to several backfill QC databases from operating mines, coefficients of variation are calculated on the order of 50%. Clearly, there is a need to develop better industry practices for assessing the quality of mine backfill and to assist mine operators with the interpretation of test results and the development of action plans in the event of undesired outcomes.
