The most important uranium mineralization in the Western Carpathians occurs in the Permian rocks. Low grade stratiform uranium mineralization was formed during the Permian due to adsorbtion and reduction by organic matter, titanium oxides, iron hydroxides, pyrite and clay minerals. During the Alpine orogeny uranium (± molybdenum and copper) remobilized stratabound ores were formed. Dominant ore minerals are uraninite, U-Ti oxides, molybdenite, pyrite and chalcopyrite Two generations of ore minerals are reflected by their textures and chemical composition.

"Direct force measurement for bubble-particle interaction has been difficult due to bubble deformation, which makes it difficult to know the separation distances between the two macroscopic surfaces. In the present work, we have developed a method of monitoring the deformation accurately, while directly measuring the interaction forces. In effect, we can ‘see’ bubbles interacting with mineral surfaces under different hydrodynamic and chemical conditions and determine both the hydrodynamic and surface forces involved. In the present work, a high-speed camera has been used to record the optical interference fringes of a thin liquid film (TLF) of water formed on a mineral surface. The recorded fringes are then used to reconstruct the spatiotemporal profiles, from which one can determine the hydrodynamic pressure using the Reynolds lubrications theory. From the forces directly measured in the present work and the hydrodynamic pressures obtained from the fringes, we have determined the disjoining pressure. The results show that air bubbles interacting with hydrophilic surfaces form stable TLFs with zero contact angles. The TLF formed on a hydrophobic surface thins fast, form a ‘pimpled’ film, and ruptures to form a finite contact angle. The new information obtained in the present work may be useful to better understand the role of hydrodynamic and surface forces affecting bubble-particle interactions."

"IntroductionNOTE.-All figures on the supply and consumption of coal in Canada cited in this paper were collected and reported by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics. The friendly and efficient co-operation of the officials of the Bureau. is the foundation upon which it has been my privilege to rely in the preparation of this and two earlier papers ( 1). My thanks are due also to our own staff on the Dominion Coal Board, who spared neither time nor effort in helping to prepare this paper.STATISTICS are comparatively dull and, to many people, coal statistics are duller than most. Coal is, however, the one basic mineral upon which our whole way of life depends and it may be well if attention is drawn to this fact by an occasional statistical review of the coal position in Canada. The recent furore over the oil and gas discoveries has so obscured the basic position of coal in many minds that a little basic coal information may be useful. It is for this reason that, for the third successive year, a factual survey of the coal position is being presented.In the previous papers (1) explanations have been given of the basic considerations in the preparation of these reports and some special phases of the overall picture have been examined. "ORIGIN OF INVESTIGATIONThe Federal Mine Safety Code for Bituminous Coal and Lignite Mines of the United States, July 24J 1946, contains the following provisions with regard to rock dusting: Article VI. - Section 2. Rock dusting.(a) All mines, except those mines or those locations in a mine which are too wet or too high in incombustible content to propagate an explosion, shall be rock-dusted to within 80 feet of the faces of rooms and entries; however, if the mine or any part of it is wet but becomes dry, the mine or portion of the mine so affected shall be rock-dusted as ·soon as it becomes dry. (b) In mines partially rock-dusted or in mines that are required to start rock dusting, haulageways and parallel entries connected thereto by open crosscuts shall be rock-dusted. Back entries shall be rock-dusted for at least 1,000 feet outby the junction with the first active entry. Inby this junction, the rooms, entries, and crosscuts shall be rock-dusted by generalized rock dusting as provided for in section 2(a).(c) Where rock dust is applied, it shall be distributed upon the top, floor, and sides of all open places and maintained in such quantity that the incombustible content of the mine dust will not be less than 65 percent. In trackless entries and air courses, protection in lieu of generalized rock dusting may be had by using bags filled with rock dust, if they are placed at regular intervals and staggered as described in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3411."

"Physical impurity transfer in solvent extraction (SX) has a significant impact on operating costs, electrowinning (EW) performance, and cathode quality. Some operations use a wash stage to limit impurity transfer by diluting the entrained pregnant leach solution (PLS) to prevent direct transfer to EW. Wash stage operating conditions vary impacting impurity transfer. A number of factors impact dilution efficiency including mixer continuity, wash aqueous acidity, and organic quality. The impact of these variables on dilution efficiency was studied and compared to current industry practice. INTRODUCTION With the exception of iron, impurity transfer in copper SX is due to PLS carryover in the loaded organic via aqueous entrainment and crud movement. The quantity of impurity transfer is influenced by many variables including operating set points, organic quality, and settler housekeeping. Crud management and treatment is a common practice aimed at minimizing transfer of impurities to EW. Crud is a complex solid-stabilized emulsion of aqueous and organic[9]. As such, it contains a large aqueous component and the associated impurities (from the PLS). A common practice is to remove interfacial crud to prevent movement. Additionally, mixer continuity can be altered to enable compaction and improve the efficiency of interfacial pumping[10]. Understanding the factors impacting aqueous entrainment and optimizing the available controls should be a key focus for any operation. Aqueous entrainment in the loaded organic can be impacted by: • Mixer continuity • Mixer organic/aqueous (O/A) ratio • Mixer speed and impeller type • Organic and aqueous depths • Specific settler flow • Use of settler internals (picket fences, coalescing packs) • Organic quality • Design and operation of loaded organic tanks Conventional thought is to run the E1 mixer in aqueous continuity to reduce aqueous entrainment. Generally, O/A ratios close to 1:1 result in improved metallurgical and physical performance. Mixer speeds should be chosen to achieve acceptable stage efficiencies while minimizing over-mixing. Organic depths can be increased in the E1 stage to increase retention time and minimize aqueous entrainment. Settler internals can also be used, but require maintenance to maintain effectiveness. The quality of the plant organic inventory will impact physical performance. Poor organic quality can lead to higher phase disengagement times increasing impurity transfer to the electrolyte. Additionally, the design and operation of the loaded organic tank can impact impurity transfer[8]. Despite the variables that can be used to reduce aqueous entrainment and crud movement, impurity transfer is still an issue in some operations. For these operations with high PLS impurity concentrations, a wash stage may be beneficial to manage impurity transfer. Understanding factors impacting wash stage performance is important to optimize performance and limit impurity transfer."

The use of inferential particle sizing for a closed wet grinding circuit control has been practiced for several years. This paper presents a review of some inferential sizing equations developed for pilot and industrial plants using regression analysis. An analytical development is then presented showing how the general inferential sizing model arises from the nature of the classifier model. The relation between the general sizing model and the individual equations is then discussed.

DURING the early development of blasting with liquid oxygen explosives the trend of experimentation was towards increasing the effectiveness of the explosive. Its characteristic of becoming inert after evaporation of the oxygen content made a strong appeal from the standpoint of safety, especially with missed holes. It later became apparent, however, with practical use of this explosive, that LOX lacked certain other safety characteristics. As its effectiveness was increased, it became more subject to detonation by impact. The object of this paper is to show the steps taken by one operating company to achieve greater safety in the large-scale handling of liquid oxygen explosives.

Mineral Processing Wastes, as defined by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has determined that most of the mine wastes will be regulated pursuant to subtitle D (Solid Waste Regulations) of the Solid Waste Disposal Act while specific mine waste categories will be regulated within the framework of the Toxic Substance Control Act. Though EPA's determination currently relieves the industry of the regulatory constraints mandated by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (Hazardous Waste Regulations) Subtitle C regulatory framework; the industry is not granted immunity from historical or current environmental regulations related to listed or characteristically hazardous or solid wastes. Because of the current regulatory trends and the need to implement cost effective remediation alternatives; advanced currently available on-site remediation technologies are available to minimize, reduce, contain or prevent environmental impacts related to mining and processing activities. In light of industry technical needs, an overview of the research and commercially available remediation technologies will be discussed and a brief discussion of the strengths and weakness of each technology will be presented. Technologies to be discussed includes stabilization, solidification, soil wash, soil flush, thermal distillation, pump and treat, metal extraction, centrifuges, filter presses, bioremediation, and incineration.

Mississippi has had oil production for only the past six years and natural gas production of minor magnitude since' 1926. The search for oil and gas commenced in 1903 and 1496 wells had been drilled in search of oil and gas up to Jan. 1, 1946. As the year 1945 ended, 659 wells were producing oil and gas from 23 separate reservoirs. The production for the year was 8,353,719,000 standard cubic feet of natural gas measured on a pressure base of 15.025 lb. per sq. in. abs., 15.316,009 bbl. of oil¬field water and 19,093,766 bbl. of crude oil and condensate. Production for the year 1944 was 2,636,067,000 standard cubic feet of gas, 14,979,793 bbl. of salt water and 16,420,346 bbl. of crude oil and condensate.

WITHIN the past two years, a number of publications have called attention to the double peaks, or stages, that appear in the hardness and strength curves of certain aging alloys. The author has shown the existence of double hardness peaks during the aging of a high-purity silver-copper alloy;1 and on the basis of electrical resistance, microscopic, dilation and lattice-parameter measurements, he concluded that the initial hardness peak occurs prior to precipitation while the secondary hardening is due to precipitation. It was suggested that the general mechanism of age-hardening involves two consecutive processes, the first consisting of nucleus or knot2 formation, and the second consisting of actual precipitation and particle growth. It was further held that the two stages are interdependent, but because of nonuniform precipitation they may overlap each other to an extent that increases as the aging temperature is raised. At high aging temperatures, the effect of the first stage cannot be detected because of the rapid occurrence of precipitation. The general theory of age-hardening recently presented by Dr. M. L. V. Gayler3 is in close agreement with the picture outlined above. With reference to work done on duralumin, copper-beryllium and copper-silver alloys, Dr. Gayler also concluded that age-hardening takes place in two consecutive steps: first, diffusion (in which the solute atoms migrate to certain crystallographic planes), and then precipitation. However, W. L. Fink and D. W. Smith4 have shown that the double aging peaks that appear in the strength curves of high-purity aluminum-copper alloys may be explained without recourse to pre-precipitation phenomena. By means of very careful metallographic technique, Fink and Smith demonstrated that during aging the precipitation takes place at an accelerated rate along the grain boundaries and slip planes as a result of the plastic deformation caused by the drastic quench from the solution heat-treatment temperature. ? Steel as it is poured, or teemed, into the mold for forming the ingot may be broadly separated into two divisions; i.e., effervescing or gassy steel, also termed evolution steel, and non-effervescing or killed steel, also termed solution steel. Between these primary divisions there are various types having the characteristics of both divisions but really nut belonging to either; such steels are termed semi-piping, rising, or wild, as the type may be. True effervescing steel should contain large volumes of gases, which are evolved while the metal is being teemed from the ladle nozzle into the mold, and continue to escape while the temperature of the steel is falling prior to its solidification the top of the ingot remaining liquid, due to the evolution of gases, until an ingot skin of considerable thickness has been formed. These gases consist principally of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, nitrogen, and ammonia. It is generally understood that nitrogen gases are the first evolved and these form the skin blowliolcs, troublesome at times, in the solidifying ingot. Ingots made of effervescing steel will always contain a large number of blowholes. Such blowholes are not deemed objectionable in certain products if they occur well inside the ingot where they will not be subjcct to oxidation upon cooling, reheating, and rolling or forging of the ingot. Very little top or bottom discard is taken from this type of ingot, as pipes, or large shrinkage cavities, at the upper portion of the ingot do not usually occur, the difference in volume between the liquid and the solid steel (6 to 10 per cent.) being compensated by the innumerable blowholes distributed throughout the body of the ingot. Of the 40,000,000 tons of steel made in the United States during the year 1919, at least 35,000,000 tons of ingots were made of gassy or semi-gassy steel. Killed, or solution, steel is termed true piping steel from the characteristic pipe or shrinkage cavity that usually occurs in the uppermost central portion of the ingot.

Sodium sulfide is used extensively to increase the recovery of oxidized copper and lead minerals by flotation, particularly when using xanthates as collectors. It is generally assumed that the sodium sulfide converts a film of the oxidized mineral to the sulfide, and that the xanthate, while not a very effective collector for the oxidized minerals, is a good collector for the sulfide. On the other hand, Taggart and his collaborators1 claim that unless sulfide minerals are oxidized they cannot adsorb xanthates and do not float. Gaudin2 states that amyl xanthate, used in conjunction with sodium sulfide, gives better results than ethyl xanthate. Rabone3 and Mayer-Schranz4 agree that excess of sulfide functions as a depressant. Owing to the greater solubilities of the oxidized minerals than of the sulfides, the consumption of sodium sulfide is greater than that of most other flotation reagents, up to 10 lb. per ton of ore being used in some plants. Luyken and Bierbrauer5 recommend a water washing to remove soluble heavy metal salts; by this means sulfide consumption may be reduced. It was desirable to determine the limits of the sulfide concentrations between which contact is possible at surfaces of anglesite and cerussite in xanthate solutions. Similar determinations were desirable for the sulfide minerals with which the oxidized minerals are usually associated, since conditions should be chosen, if possible, so that the two types of mineral will float together. Because of the formation, especially in acid solutions, of hydrogen sulfide and of the hydrosulfide ion (HS-), the permissible limits of sulfide addition are obviously dependent upon the pH value. Sphalerite responds to ethyl xanthate only in the presence of an activator; for example, copper sulfate. It was necessary, therefore, to determine whether sodium sulfide interferes with the activation of sphalerite by copper sulfate. The combined effect of sulfide and copper sulfate was determined also for galena, chalcopyrite and pyrite.

While remodeling No. 1 section of the concentrator at the Washoe Reduction Works of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. during the summer of 1912, for the purpose of ascertaining what additional metal recoveries could be made by improvements in concentration practice which had been developed by the staff of the Boston & Montana Reduction Department, at Great Falls, it was deemed advisable to carry on some experiments on the treatment of the regular mill tailings by roasting and leaching, to see whether the losses of metal values might not be still further decreased. In the course of these experiments about 5,000 tons of tailings were roasted, and of the resulting calcine about 200 tons were leached. The results were so satisfactory that it was decided to continue the work on a larger scale, particularly as regards the leaching end of the process, and construction work on an 80-ton roasting and leaching plant was accordingly commenced during the latter part of February, 1913, and is being pushed as rapidly as possible. 80-Ton Leaching Plant. This plant will consist of one 20-ft. roasting furnace of the Mac-Dougall type, specially adapted to the work of roasting for leaching; two leaching tanks, 32 ft. in diameter by 12 ft. deep, together with the necessary solution tanks, air lifts, precipitating launders, etc. It has been decided to precipitate the copper from solution on scrap iron, so as not to hamper the roasting and leaching departments by any weakness that might develop in the precipitating department. It is, however, the intention to experiment with a number of different methods of precipitation; for example, by electrolysis and by hydrogen sulphide. The acid required for the operation of this plant will be purchased, ad the quantity required is not sufficient to justify the installation of an acid plant.
