The in-service degradation of the mechanical properties of steel components through the damage mechanism of high temperature hydrogen attack (HTHA), is a topic of concern in the refining and green hydrogen industry. This damage mechanism occurs in susceptible steels operating in environments at high temperatures and hydrogen pressures. The current investigation deals with the indirect monitoring of mechanical degradation via tracking of the swelling strain in affected structures. An autoclave with an AISI 316 shell was utilized to simulate accelerated HTHA damage at 550 °C and 46 bar for exposure times ranging from zero to 700 hours. The progress of the HTHA damage was tracked using encapsulated high-temperature strain gauges. The correlation between the swelling strain and mechanical property degradation was studied to develop a methodology for the continuous monitoring of embrittlement. The tensile sample orientation of the carbon steel plate was included as a variable, i.e., samples parallel, transverse, or perpendicular to the plate rolling direction were included, since it has been shown that the sample orientation influences the HTHA damage features. For the through-thickness orientation, and upon exceeding a threshold value of exposure time, all tensile properties were severely degraded, with values in the order of a 90 per cent reduction being observed. It was found that the degradation of carbon steel mechanical properties can be correlated to the swelling strain measured during exposure. The critical point for mechanical property degradation in the plate through-thickness orientation, whereafter a severe decrease in the ductility of the material occurs, was found to be in the order of 1% of the total swelling strain measured during exposure, equivalent to 65 microstrain. This threshold was found to be significantly lower than that expected from the literature, where limits of 400 to 1000 microstrain were postulated.

Prior to the commissioning of the Sansu Sulphide Treatment Plant (STP), Ashanti Goldfields' treatment facilities were capable of producing some 700 000 ounces of gold per annum. Ore sources were underground refractory sulphides, surface oxides and old tailings dams. In order to increase the mines production to 1 million ounces per annum and to accommodate the change in ore sources as surface mining moved into fresh sulphides, a part of the strategy adopted was -the construction of a new sulphide treatment plant with a capacity to mill 2.2 million tonnes per annum and produce 400 000 ounces of gold. The STP has been designed, built and commissioned. and has been in operation since February 1994. The Plant boasts the world's largest Bio-oxidation facility which is capable of treating 790 tonnes of sulphide concentrate per day at a grade of 11.4% sulphur and is currently undergoing an expansion to increase its capacity to 1050 tonnes per day. The following sections describe the reasons for selecting the BioX® Process, the plant design, the commissioning experience and the plant performance to date.

The Iron and steel industry is one of the most intensive energy consuming processes. The majority of iron making processes is now directed towards the uses of fossil-based energy sources like coke, coal and oil. Recently, emphasis has been paid to replace part of fossil- based energy sources with renewable biomass-derived reducing agents. In the present work, the possibility of the effective use of woody biomass in carbon-iron oxide composites was investigated. Wood powder was carbonized in N2 atmosphere at 300 up to 450oC. The carbon content in the produced bio-char increased with temperature. The porosity of the char arises from maintaining the cellular structure inherent in wood biomass increases with temperature. The reduction behavior of four iron oxide-bio char composites having different fixed carbon content were carried out non-isothermally up to 1200oC in Ar atmosphere using thermogravimetric anlyser (TGA). Quadruple mass spectroscopy (QMS) was also adopted to measure the CO, CO2 concentrations in the off gases resulted during reduction process. The effect of volatile matter on the reduction of iron oxide was intensively studied. The different phases developed in the reduced product were identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The reduction of composites was found to proceed in a stepwise manner (Fe2O3?Fe3O4?FexO?Fe).

Sperrylite (PtAs₂) comprises about 21% of the platinum group minerals (PGMs) in the Platreef ore and regularly reports to the tailings due to its poor floatability. Hence, improving its recovery will be of great economic value to the South African PGM industry. The reasons for its poor floatability are not yet clear. This paper seeks to understand the interactions occurring between PtAs₂ and common thiol collectors, viz. potassium normal butyl xanthate (PNBX), sodium normal dibutyl dithiophosphate (SNBDTP) and sodium normal mono butyl dithiocarbamate (SNBDTC). By understanding its interactions with these collectors, it is hypothesised that it will be possible to suggest ligands that may help improve the floatability of sperrylite. Mineral-collector interactions were studied by determining the molar energy of interaction using isothermal titration calorimetry and electrochemical techniques. The hydrophobicity of the mineral before and after adsorption of the collectors was determined by heat of immersion and its flotation response determined by microflotation tests. Microflotation tests using synthetic sperrylite at pH 9 showed low collectorless recovery of 34.8% and after adding the equivalent of one pseudo-monolayer of the PNBX collector, the recovery of 32.5% was obtained. Moreover, the addition of up to three pseudo-monolayers coverage of PNBX did not result in any increase in flotation recovery. A small recovery improvement was noted when synthetic plant water with the ionic strength of 0.0484 mol/L was used, but this did not hold for all collectors, with SNBDTP exhibiting higher recoveries in distilled water. PHOSPHATE ROCK is a low- priced commodity. This fact has influenced the choice of mining and beneficiating methods to a greater degree, perhaps, than in most other low-grade mining operations. The fact that many yards of everburden and matrix must be stripped and mined per ton of salable "rock" produced and sold has necessitated he development of relatively simple btneficiating plants having high capacity and low capital and operating costs. The law of diminishing returns must always be reckoned with in phosphate mining and washing, and often recovery must be sacrificed in favor of costs in order to achieve the highest over-all economic efficiency. The phosphate-bearing formation, known as "matrix," is composed of (1) phosphate pebbles, which are somewhat rounded in shape and which vary in size from 1-in, to micron sizes, (2) rounded quartz grains usually smaller than 10 mesh, and (3) clay, of varying "stiffness," which is the binder of the matrix. The phosphate pebbles vary in hardness. Their color, which varies from white to black, is not a reliable indicator of the Bone Phosphate of Lime (B.P.L.) content of the

Phosphosilicate glass films were formed, by reacting gaseous P2O5 with SiO2, over a large range of temperature (800° to 1200°C) and gas phase composition (nearly two orders of magnitude of effective P2Ospressure). The film compositions generally corresponded with the liquidus curve, delineating the maximum solubility of the tridymite Phase of SiO 2 in phosphosilicate liquid solution at the temperature of film formation. It is shown that the P2O5 concentration of the phosphosilicate liquid film tends to decrease by reaction with the underlying SiO 2 layer until the liquidus curve is reached. The validity of the thermodynamic argument used in this explanation is supported by the results of a determination of the composition of borosili-cute films, prepared by reacting gaseous B2O3 with SiO2 at different temperatures. The kinetics of phosphosilicate film formation were described by a model predicated on a steady-state diffusion of P2O5 through the film. UNDERSTANDING of the processes leading to formation of phosphosilicate and borosilicate glasses is of great importance for producing passivating layers on FET devices. Passivating films with optimum characteristics are preferably formed in a separate step, independent of the doping of the semiconductor.' The results of an investigation carried out to gain improved insight into the mechanism of glass formation are presented in this paper. It would be expected that application of the known Pz05-Si02 and B 2 O 3-SiO2 phase diagrams should be useful in extending understanding of the glass-forming processes. However, the question of the propriety of treating thermally grown SiO2 in these binary oxide systems by the methods of equilibrium thermodynamics must be considered when this application is attempted. Although Sah et a1.' and Allen et al. 3 investigated the kinetics of formation of phosphosilicate glass (PSG), they failed to adequately relate their diffusion models to the occurrence of experimentally observed phases in the PSG/SiO 2/Si system. Horuichi and yamaguchi4 investigated the diffusion of boron through an oxide layer and described their results in terms of a model similar to that of Sah and coworkers. More recently, Kooi 5 and Snow and Deal6 reported the compositions of PSG films formed by depositing P2 O 5 onto SiO2. These compositions apparently coincide with those at the liquidus curve delineating the maximum solubility of crystalline SiO2 in phosphosilicate liquid solutions. These authors did not discuss the thermodynamic implications of their results on the structure of thermally grown SiO2 films. The structure of thermally grown Sio2 films and that of vitreous silica are generally thought to be quite similar. Since the solubility of a substance depends on its structure, it is relevant that the solubility of vitreous silica in water7 is highly reproducible, like the solubility of thermally grown SiOz in phosphosilicate liquid. Furthermore, the vitreous silica-water system appears to be in true thermodynamic equilibrium (viz., the same solubility value can be approached from both supersaturated and under-saturated solutions). Sosman7 suggested that a type of two-dimensional lattice may form at the silica/solution interface, resulting in the observed solubility behavior that is characteristic of a crystalline solid. An alternative explanation may be that vitreous silica has a microcrystalline grain structure. Other investigators have suggested that vitreous silica has essentially the structure of B cristobalite,' or is composed of microcrystals of p tridymite or cristobalite, or a mixture of both. Presumably the grain size would be sufficiently large to minimize any appreciable contribution of the grain boundaries to the solubility of the crystalline matrix. The present investigation was carried out to clarify the significance of the boundaries in the Pa,-SiO, and B2O3-SiO2 Systems in determining PSG and BSG (borosilicate) film compositions. Furthermore, the kinetic data for PSG film formation were extended, using a wider range of formation parameters than were previously reported. One model describing the kinetics of film formation will be presented that is compatible with the thermodynamics of the Pa5-Si02 system. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Glass Film Preparation. SiO2 films (1000 to 8000A thick) were obtained by oxidation of silicon substrates in dry O2 at 1100°C. PSG and BSG films were prepared by exposing these layers to gaseous oxides obtained by reacting high-purity POC13 and BBr3, respectively, with O2. ZIRCONIUM has been float-zone-refined in an electron-beam furnace and the redistribution of oxygen, iron, and tungsten has been measured. The iodide zirconium used in the present experiments initially contained both oxygen and iron in the range 100 to 200 ppm by weight, and tungsten in amounts less than 10 ppm. Float-zone refining of zirconium, using induction heating, has previously been attempted by Kneip and Betterton1 and Langeron.2 Kneip and Betterton were primarily interested in the removal of iron and nickel. They achieved some purification, with respect to both these elements, in material given up to six passes at 150 mm per hr under an argon atmosphere. Langeron reported purification for a large number of elements after four completed passes in a static vacuum system operating at pressures less than 10-6 mm of Hg and with rates of zone travel between 30 and 40 mm per hr. He did not report oxygen concentrations, but stated that there was inverse segregation of this element. westlake5 has also used a minimum of four zone passes to remove iron from zirconium. No rates or conditions were given. Belk6 has shown that tungsten contamination can occur during electron-beam melting. He reported an increase from 0.01 to 0.05 pct by weight tungsten in molybdenum after four complete zone passes. The vacuum system for the electron-beam unit used in the present investigation consisted of a single-stage rotary pump backing a liquid-air-trapped oil-diffusion pump. A pressure of less than 10-8 mm of Hg was obtained with Dow-Corning 705 fluid in the diffusion pump. In order to avoid contamination of the zirconium by evaporation from the tungsten filament, a special focusing cage4 was employed. Three rates of zone travel, 114, 38, and 4 mm per hr, were investigated, with the liquid zone moving from the bottom to the top of the bar. The bars used were 3 mm diam and the total melted length was 130 mm. Oxygen was analyzed by neutron-activation analysis using a neutron flux of 10' neutrons per sq cm per sec to form the isotope N16 by the 016 (n,p) N16 reaction. The standard deviation is quoted for each oxygen determination. The iron and tungsten analyses were performed spectrographically, and the precision is estimated to be ±6 pct. Analyses for tungsten were all below the detectable limit of 10 ppm, confirming the protection given by the focusing cage. No significant redistribution of oxygen was found at the two higher rates of zone travel. The redistribution of oxygen and iron obtained after five passes at a rate of zone travel of 4 mm per hr (1.1 x 10-4 cm per sec) is recorded in Tables I and 11. Burris, Stockman, and Dillon3 have estimated the distribution of solutes during multipass zone refining. Using their curves for an effective distribution coefficient of Keff = 1.5 and 2 for oxygen and Keff = 0.3 for iron, the expected concentrations were estimated for the present material. These are shown in Tables I and 11, along with the experimentally measured values. The calculated concentrations are based on a molten-zone length of 10 pct of the total melted length, whereas in the present experiments the molten zone was approximately 5 pct of the total melted length. The effect of zone length on solute redistribution is most pronounced after a large number of zone passes. Comparison with Pfann's published data8 for solute redistribution for various Keff's and zone lengths indicates only small differences at low numbers of completed zone passes. It is evident that the expected distribution has not been realized in the case of iron. Scrapings of material deposited on the inner surfaces of the electron-focusing cage were found to be magnetic. It is, therefore, concluded that redistribution of iron is masked by evaporation. Deposition of iron inside the focusing cage was observed at all rates of zone travel. The results of the investigation may be summarized as follows: 1) Segregation of oxygen is typical for a solute with a distribution coefficient, Keff > 1. 2) No redistribution of oxygen takes place at high rates of zone travel. 3) The distribution coefficient for oxygen lies between 1.5 and 2.0. 4) Purification with respect to iron occurs mainly by evaporation. 5) The focusing cage is effective in preventing tungsten contamination.

One of the primary goals of Bureau of Mines research is to reduce the cost of coal mining by improving the efficiency of longwall supports. One method of achieving this goal is the optimization of stress distribution within the support structure, resulting in a lower overall weight, more fully stressed shield. However, before stress optimization can be initiated, load conditions must be defined that cause maximum stress in the various support components. A finite-element model of a longwall shield was used to identify these critical load conditions. These load conditions were then evaluated in the Bureau's mine roof simulator (MRS) by instrumentation of a longwall shield and measurement of strains in each of the shield components. The critical (canopy-base contact) load conditions were identified that can cause structural failure at less than rated shield (hydraulic yield) capacity. Comparisons were made between full-contact and partial-contact load conditions. Other parameters investigated included the stiffness of the contact material, changes in shield geometry, rate of load application, and effects of horizontal constraint. Conclusions were drawn regarding the structural integrity of the major shield components and potential for stress optimization.

This paper describing the mining practice at the Central-Eureka mine is one of a series of similar papers being prepared by the United Staten Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The mining practices described in this paper are illustrative of the methods employed in the exploitation of comparatively low-grade gold ores under the extremely heavy and swelling ground conditions which occur in the Mother Lode belt of California. The Central-Eureka Mining Co. comprises a group of adjoining mines in Amador County near Sutter Creek. The principal mines of the consolidated group are the Central-Eureka, formerly known as the Summit mine, and the Old Eureka mine, which is also known as the Hayward Quartz mine. The group is situated in the most productive part of tae main Mother Lode belt, the 10-mile portion which lies between the towns of Plymouth and Jackson. The three largest producing mines of the entire belt at the present time are the Argonaut, Kennedy, and the Central-Eureka; these lie within a radius of less than 1-1/2 miles.

The mining industry of the World, and particularly of the United States, has made a complete reversal from underground to surface mining methods since the turn of the 20th Century. This has occurred even as average ore grades were decreasing and strip ratios rising. In the early 1900's there were over 100 underground mines producing from the three iron ranges of Minnesota -- today there are hone. Practically all of our coal prior to 1930 was mined underground; today over one-third is from surface operations and that percentage is increasing. Although world mining has hot changed to surface techniques as rapidly as has the U. S. Industry, the shift is escalating and will approach our figures shortly. A comparison of World and U. S. production figures are shown in Table 1, taken from the AIME Surface Mining volume, and the trend rates for the U. S. are depicted in Fig. 1.

Recent pillar collapses have caused five large airblasts in underground U.S. limestone mines. One of these events injured three miners, but all of them put many other miners at risk. To better understand the hazards, Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) conducted a comprehensive review of the international literature on airblasts. More than 40 airblast cases have been documented, in a wide variety of minerals. Experience shows that miners that are in the direct path of the air as it moves towards the mine exits are at the greatest risk. The paper describes a risk management methodology that can be used to evaluate the level of hazard throughout the mine and aid in the selection of controls to reduce the risk. The paper concludes with a detailed case history of an actual pillar collapse and airblast.

"The captive bubble and sessile drop contact angle techniques have been used to evaluate the hydrophobicity of petrographically identified coal macerals. The magnitude of the contact angle on vitrinite is shown to be a function of coal rank ( %C, %0 and % vitrinite reflectance), increasing with increasing rank to a maximum for low volatile bituminous rank coals then decreasing for anthracite. The least data scatter is found when vitrinite reflectance is used as a rank parameter. Contact angles measured or estimated for other discrete macerals, indicate a variation in hydrophobicity based on coal type. These data correlate well with known flotation results. Coal is a heterogeneous mixture of plant remains and associated minerals that have undergone chemical and physical changes by biological and geological processes. These plant remains form coal macerals, discrete organic entities in the coal which have characteristic chemical and physical properties. As the differing chemical nature of each maceral will affect its behaviour in processes such as carbonization the separation of macerals during coal preparation may provide an important asset in coal utilization.Separation of some of the macerals based on specific gravity has been achieved in the laboratory, and by Sun and Cohen , in a study of two Pennsylvania bituminous coal preparation plants. It was indicated that the lighter exinites report almost exclusively to the clean coal while the denser inertinites are concentrated in the higher gravity fractions. The Longwy-Burstlein process6 took advantage of the difference in hardness or friability of the macerals by using impact breakage followed by screening to remove the more friable vitrain,clarain and fusain. The remaining durain, often high in spore content, was then recrushed. The re-mixed fractions produced the optimum size for obtaining the best coke strength for a particular coal.Separation or concentration of rnacerals by froth flotation largely depends on differences in the hydrophobicity of the macerals. Sun and Cohen 5 . indicated an order of decreasing floatability as exinite, vitrinite and inertinite, while a Russian study (as cited by Brown 7 ) showed that vitrains floated more readily than the duller types. More recently, Hirt and Aplan8 showed that 'pseudovitrinite' floats somewhat faster than does vitrinite while fusinite floats very slowly. Olson and A plan found that vitrinite floated easily while substantial quantities of the non-floated coal contained fusinitic material. Burdon noted that vitrinite is more floatable than semifusinite, and Sarker et a/. 11 have shown that vitrinite is selectively concentrated by froth flotation and oil agglomeration. Sun indicated that flotation, based on his calculated floatability index, should decrease in the order clarain, vitrain, fusain and durain; while Horsley and Smith 13 indicated the decrease to be: vitrain, clarain, durain and fusain. These differences can be attributed to the specific coals used in each study and to the individual macerals composing each coal type within a given coal."

"Behaviour of rebar bolts subjected to combined shear and bending in underground potash mining applications is not well understood. An experimental investigation compared load applied to resin-grouted No. 25 metric rebar to theoretical load, calculated using elastic bending theory. Distributed optical sensing (fibre optic) technology allowed axial strain measurements at 1.25 mm increments along the length of rebar. Experimental procedure, data processing methods, and equipment improvements are needed for field applications of optical sensing technology. "Longwall bituminous coal mining has been practiced in Pennsylvania since the 1970""s. Hundreds of longwall panels have been mined during the last 40 years but only 24 have actually undermined Pennsylvania's Interstate Highway System. The impact to interstate highways are summarized in this paper and the factors that influence the magnitude of these impacts are examined.INTRODUCTIONOver the last 30 years, interstate highways in Pennsylvania have been undermined by portions of 21 bituminous coal mine longwall panels. From 2003 to 2008, three of the panel were extracted by the Emerald Mine and six by the Cumberland Mine both in Greene County and both owned by Alpha Resources. Previous assessments of longwall mining under Pennsylvania’s interstates have identified impacts to the highways but no danger to public safety. In general the magnitude and extent of impacts during the recent undermining of Interstate 79 or 179 appears to be similar as those identified in previous studies. The nine longwall panels are among some of the widest in the U.S. They are supercritical in character with overburdens ranging from greater than 152 m (500 ft) to less than 305 m (1,000 ft).The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) requested that the University of Pittsburgh summarize observations collected by their staff during the recent undermining of 179. Observations and photographs of impacts to the highway were made by PA DEP staff and entered into reports prepared by California District Mining Office (COMO) staff and statements written into the Bituminous Underground Mining Information System (BUMIS) database. In addition to the observations by the PA DEP, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) conducted a series of detailed land surveys along portions of the highway undermined from 2003 to 2008. To characterize the subsidence basin fanned by longwall mining. PennDOT information has been analyzed by another research group within the university (Guticrre7, et al., 20 I 0)."

While apparently the hysteria with regard to silicosis and other occupational diseases has largely subsided and this subject is being more carefully considered and soberly judged, it would be poor policy for any employer to maintain that the storm has ended and that he can relax and revert to conditions as they were 5, 10, or more years ago. The fact is that the plan of paying occupational-disease compensation is now in its infancy and can be expected to grow rapidly. At present, while all of the States of the Union, including the District of Columbia and excepting only Arkansas and Mississippi, have compensation acts, only the following make provision for occupational diseases to some extent or in one way or another: California, Delaware, Connecticut, District of Columbia? Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Silicosis is compensable in one way or another in California, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Wisconsin, and possibly in other States. During the past few months, occupational-disease legislation (largely silicosis) has been considered in some form in Arkansas, California, Delaware, Idaho, Maryland, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah and Washington. It will be surprising if comparatively comprehensive occupational-disease legislation is not on the statute books of nearly every State in the Union within the next 5 years. With this situation confronting him, the farsighted industrialist who has the interest of his organization at heart, if he has not already done so will immediately start to "put his house in order" by studying possible occupational disease hazards to his employees and promptly applying known remedial measures or attempting to devise such measures if none exist. Unquestionably, one of the most important of the surveys to be made relates to dust occurrence, as State laws on occupational disease are almost certain to contain provisions, on silicosis and, with almost equal certainty, the provisions of any State law are not likely to be particularly similar to those of other States.

Steel and iron pipe lined with cement to protect it against corrosion has been used in the municipal water systems of the New England States since about 1870. In most recent years, the petroleum industry adopted cement-lined pipe to forestall corrosion, particularly in those areas where large quantities of corrosive brines and hydrogen sulfide are associated with the oil produced. Many of the oil companies had on hand large quantities of corroded pipe, normally disposed of as scrap, which could be cleaned, lined with cement, and returned to service. It was soon learned that after the so-called scrap pipe was lined with cement much of it could serve fully as well as new cement-lined pipe. The demand for lining used pipe with cement resulted in the establishment of several processing, plants in the Mid-Continent oil-producing area. Today six cement-lining plants serve the areas three in Oklahoma and one each in Kansas, Texas, and Illinois. All of these plants have lined large quantities of used pipe for the brine-disposal systems of western Kansas, Illinois, and east Texas and also for the operators of water-flooding projects in northeastern Oklahoma and southeastern Kansas, where large quantities of brine and fresh water are being injected into the oil-bearing formations as a secondary oil-recovery method. Since war demands during the past 2 years have created an acute shortage of steel, the need of reclaiming used pipe for the expansion of oil-producing operations has become more evident than ever before. Thus the new industry (about 6 years old) - lining used pipe with cement - is saving large quantities of steel at a critical time by reclaiming used pipe and preventing further- corrosion.

I know this is, at best, a frustrating period for the coal mining industry. About 20,000 miners have been laid off, mostly in the Appalachian and mid-western areas, and several mines are working less than 5 days a week; however, the industry is experiencing modern growth and, at least, there is the potential for future growth. The coal industry is probably only operating at about 80 percent of its present capacity, and it is certainly capable of helping this country solve its energy problems. Growth, as a rule, does not come easy, and growth in the coal industry is no exception to this rule. Many formidable challenges have to be overcome. As we all know, mining relies very heavily on the earth sciences, which have advanced significantly in the past few years, but we are always working in a changing environment which in most cases is a hostile environment. Large quantities of material are quickly extracted and rapidly moved in, generally speaking, a very confined area. The very nature of the mining business directly and constantly impacts our environment during this period in which the Nation and the world has become increasingly smaller and more concerned about protecting our environment. In addition, growth brings about an expanding work force which is increasingly younger and less experienced.

Laboratory and pilot-plant tests of spodumene-beryl pegmatites of the Kings Mountain, N. C., area resulted in development of a new and improved method by the Bureau of Mines for separating and recovering spodumene, mica, and beryl. The process was successfully applied to other domestic pegmatites and a spodumene flotation-plant tailing containing about 0.5 percent beryl. The method comprised soap flotation of the spodumene, using combinations of sodium fluoride and lignin sulfonate as conditioning agents to recover 80 to 85 percent of the contained lithia in concentrates assaying over 6 percent Li20. About 80 percent or more of the beryl was retarded in the spodumene tailing. The beryl subsequently was activated, floated, and cleaned in a secondary circuit to yield beryl concentrates containing 6 to 7 percent BeO. The tests also demonstrated that a good recovery of high-grade mica could be produced.
