The sintering characteristics and the change in the compositional distribution in the PbTiO3 PbZrO3-Pb(Mgl/3Nb2/3)O3 system during the sintering process by spark plasma sintering (SPS) method were examined. They were compared with those by a normal sintering method. The densification by the normal sintering was slow even at high temperatures, When SPS method was employed, much lower temperature and shorter period resulted in sintered bodies having almost the theoretical density. As expected in normal sintering, the compositional distribution decreased as the sintered density increased. On the contrary, the change in the compositional distribution by SPS was much smaller than that in the normal sintering. This sintering characteristic of SPS suggested a possibility of fabrication of sintered material having a desired compositional distribution.-

Silver contained in zinc calcines undergoes several phase changes as it proceeds through the leaching circuit of a roast-leach-electrowin zinc plant. In the present study, the flotation response of silver from leach residues prepared under a variety of carefully controlled operating conditions in the pilot plant has been examined. Flotation of neutral leach residue is shown to be technically viable and to merit consideration for those plants without a high acid leach circuit, but having significant silver values in the feed. Residue leach conditions must be kept slightly acidic to promote the formation of Ag2S, (Ag, CU)2S and Ag2S rims on residual unroasted sphalerite, while simultaneously avoiding the hydrolysis of soluble iron which depresses silver recovery and grade. Factors to be considered during integration of a flotation process into an electrolytic zinc plant are discussed.

It is difficult to remove arsenic and bismuth from antimony in the process of crude electro refining. The electro refining of antimony has been studied using ammonium fluoride-antimony sulphate electrolyte system. The Influence of temperature, current density and additives on arsenic and bismuth removal from crude antimony has been investigated in this paper. Optimum process parameters, namely, temperature of 25?, current density of 400A/m2, distance between anode and cathode of 50mm, electrolytic period of 24 hours, oxalic acid dosage of 10g/L and complexon III dosage of 0.2 g/L have been ascertained.

Field testing of GPS mining applications has confirmed the technical and operational viability of GPS for precise, centimeter-level positioning in harsh taconite environments. GPS hardware has provided consistent availability exceeding 90%, with precision in certain applications of ± 0.07 foot at 95% confidence levels. Despite these technical successes though, challenges persist in achieving effective GPS integration. These challenges include the acceptance of new job tasks by mine personnel, the capacity of typical mine data communications infrastructure and the need to design GPS interfaces for new mining equipment.

In situ recovery (ISR) of uranium alters the baseline groundwater geochemistry in order to mobilize and complex uranium to extract and concentrate it. ISR wellfield restoration is often challenging, and primarily relies on groundwater sweep, reinjection of treated permeate, and/or injection of reductants. Greater focus should be placed on injection-based approaches (using existing infrastructure) based on established engineering concepts used for in situ remediation of groundwater plumes. Such injection-based approaches could shorten restoration timeframes consequently reducing long-term operational costs. This paper addresses various types of injection-based approaches to wellfield restoration based on in-situ remediation success with other constituents that require similar treatment. This paper describes necessary design practices for injecting reactive chemicals (e.g., reductants or biostimulants), operations and maintenance (O&M) strategies to prevent fouling of the chemical delivery system and well network, and natural constraints to restoration. Best practices for successful biostimulation strategies that minimize residual uranium, radium, oxoanions, and other trace elements are as described. Advantages of such injection-based approaches could include significant reductions in restoration times, and consequently, lower restoration costs.

"Phosphorus in iron ores is considered as a deleterious component to iron making reflecting in cold shortness of the produced steel. The present study investigates the phosphorus migration pattern resulting from thermal treatment of an oolitic-type iron concentrate with and without additives. To this end focused mineralogical and microscopic observations were performed. The results have shown that roasting with alkaline additive drives phosphorus outside the hematite hosting mineral, however it remains evenly distributed inside the volume of the oolites. It penetrates inside the newly formed cementing phases of Al- Na-Si-Fe-type and also fills the interstices between the crystals. Other than phosphorus, aluminum, calcium and iron tend also to migrate towards the amorphous-type cementing phase. Finally, the possibilities for P removal by means of magnetic separation and acid leaching of the roasted concentrate were evaluated. The obtained final product presents a standard iron concentrate suitable for steelmaking with its phosphorous being dropped from 0.71% to 0.05% and iron grade of a nearly 66% being reached. INTRODUCTIONSignificant proven reserves of iron ores are still not exploitable due to lack of an economically viable and efficient technology for removal of phosphorus. Among them are the oolitic iron ores with high phosphorus which are estimated to nearly 377 billion tons (Hernandez et al., 2012). Phosphorus is a deleterious component giving a cold shortness to steel and often is penalized if exceeding 0.07%. Most of the high-P iron ores are considered refractory since phosphorus is finely disseminated and is evenly met as phosphate groups inclusions inside the limonite structure. Studies on inclusion of phosphorus in artificially synthesized goethite have shown that it is adsorbed as [HPO4]2- groups bridging the adjacent iron ions (Parfit et al., 1975). The high-phos iron ore originating from Lisakovsk deposit, Kazakhstan presents a similar mineralogical issue because the quantity of P, met as solid solution, is substantially higher than the one in P-containing minerals. A potential reason for that is the ore body formation process from the slow deposition of iron-rich precipitates together with clastic erosional sediments in rivers. There is significant quartz and clays inside and around the oolites. The deposit contains about 1.7 billion tons of measured and indicated reserves at 35–41% iron and 1.1 billion tons of inferred ore have been delineated possessing nearly the same chemical composition (Golubovskaya, 2003; Kokal et al., 2003)."

"The first in this series of two papers, on the potential of renewable electricity sources for mining operations in South Africa, investigated the internal structure of mining corporations to evaluate feasible alternative electricity sources that were identified as through earlier research. The purpose of this paper is to combine current knowledge about the external macroeconomic and the internal environments to produce a clear picture of how renewable sources of electricity could perform from the perspective of mining corporations in South Africa. The multi-attribute value theory (MAVT) approach was adapted to structure the research and results. The model was fed with real-time data provided from five different energy companies and four mining corporations operating in South Africa. The results show that the performance of hybrid versions of the currently used electricity sources (diesel generators and Eskom grid connection) with solar PV and onshore wind is favourable compared with the current sources alone. The advantage of diesel generators is significantly greater than that of the Eskom grid connection. By combining the macroeconomic influences with the MAVT results, hybrid solar PV versions are identified as having the greatest potential. In second place are hybrid wind solutions, which have the shortcoming that good wind conditions occur only in coastal regions where there are fewer mining activities. Geothermal hybrid versions are the least favourable owing to the lack of service infrastructure and high initial investment costs.IntroductionRecent developments in the macroeconomic environment necessitate an investigation of the internal structure of mining corporations to evaluate possible alternative electricitygenerating sources (Roehrl and Riahi, 2000). To be able to combine current knowledge of macroeconomic factors and the internal structure of mining corporations, the research process is presented in two papers. The first paper (Votteler and Brent, 2016) investigated the internal structure and argued that a strategic tool should be used to evaluate electricity sources from the perspective of mining corporations. The multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) approach was selected as the most appropriate strategic tool. Based on a literature review of previous similar MCDA approaches in energy planning, it was concluded that no adaptation of MCDA methods could be found from a corporate, mining, or South African perspective. Finally, the paper investigated the internal evaluation structure in collaboration with mining corporations, by identifying the criteria they use to evaluate electricity sources."

?Ellatzite Med? is one of the biggest mining companies in Bulgaria, processing about 12,000,000 t of ore per year. Waste materials left after extraction of copper concentrate are deposited in tailings dam ?Benkovski 2?. The hydraulic structure is built according to the downstream method, through hydrocyclonization where the downstream batter and the body of the wall are formed by the separated coarse sand particles of the separated tailings. In connection with the prolonged concession of Ellatzite Med and the enlarged capacity of Benkovski 2, the tailings dam has expanded on to the surrounding terrain. To guarantee a normal hydrocyclonization and build up of a tailings wall during waste deposition from the ore mill, the technological scheme of the hydraulic transport system of Benkovski 2 has been changed.

A potentially cost effective technique for the reclamation of heavy metal contaminated soils and sediments involves the technique of froth flotation. Heavy metals sorbed to clays in the soil may be sulfidized by the introduction of sodium sulfide and floated using a dithiophosphate collector. Separations were obtained where up to 78% of all copper ion was removed from the system. Selected samples were floated in a column cell but little advantage was seen.

The King-Beaver mine of Asbestos Corporation Limited operates an open pit in the city of Thetford Mines, Quebec. The approximate loca-tion of the open pit is at Latitude 46° 02' North and Longitude 71° 20' West. The general topography is 1020 feet above sea level. Thirty-six percent of the company's scheduled asbestos ore production, for the Thetford Mines area, comes from the King-Beaver pit. The pit operates 24 hours a day, six days a week. Normal production is 10,500 tons of ore per day at a waste to ore ratio of 2 to 1. The remaining ore requirements are mined from the King-Beaver underground mine and the British-Canadian mine.

PUBLISHED data on the solubility of nitrogen in liquid manganese are widely discordant. Ochsenfeldl observed that a Mn-N alloy with 3.6 pct N consisted of solid and liquid phases at 1260°C but at 13 00° to 1340°C the solid phase disappeared and the liquid contained 0.1 to 0.13 pct N. In contrast Saito's measurements at approxhately 1400°C yielded an average value of 0.97 pct N. Sieverts3 volumetric method is not suitable for the determination of gas solubility in manganese because the liquid metal vaporizes readily and condenses in the cooler parts of the apparatus where it can absorb large amounts of nitrogen. The purpose of this investigation was, therefore, to determine the solubility of nitrogen in manganese accurately in the range of 1273" to 1500°C. The experimental method used in this study was as follows. Electrolytic manganese of 99.9 pct purity, and weighing 50 g, was melted in a pure alumina crucible placed in a tubular furnace. Temperature was measured with a Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple and controlled within ± 5°C. Pure nitrogen was bubbled through the melt for 1 hr at constant temperature and then a sample was taken by sucking the metal into a 2-mm clear silica tube and immediately quenching in water. The sample was broken into small pieces and found to be sound to the naked eye. The entire sample was then dissolved and the resulting solution was analyzed for nitrogen by the well-known solution-distillation method. The experimental results are presented in Fig. 1. All the nitrogen solubility data refer to 1 atm of nitrogen pressure; hence the observed values are slightly corrected by using Sieverts' equation when the atmospheric pressure differed more than 5 mm Hg from 760 mm, and further, in the case of the runs at 1500°C the correction arising from the presence of Mn vapor has been made. (Cf. Eq. [3]). Scattering in the data is within ±5°C in temperature measurement and ±3 pct in total nitrogen analysis. Today the world is heavily dependent on petroleum for its energy. In the United States, over 75% of the primary energy used comes from petroleum. Other developed countries are similar. The less developed countries have a lower dependence on petroleum just as the United States did through the early 20th Century. However, these less-developed countries look upon petroleum as one of the primary energy sources for the economic growth required to improve their standard of living. So everyone considers petroleum an essential ingredient in the recipe for the good life. But there is a substantial problem with this recipe, and it is finally getting general recognition. Petroleum is a finite resource, and the world is using it up at a rapid, accelerating rate. Though it won't be exhausted for many decades, the early warnings of ultimate limits have already appeared. The suppliers of the incremental production in the Middle East have threatened to restrict increases in their production rates. And, of course, the short term embargo of four years ago clearly demonstrated the economic impact of reduced access to petroleum as a primary source of energy. World petroleum production will probably peak in. 10 to 15 years and then start declining. When that happens, economics--the allocation of scarce products (also known as the dismal science for obvious reasons)--indicates that the price of petroleum will escalate in real terms. So that's the situation today. We have a serious and growing problem facing us that could substantially alter the quality of our life over the next 25 years. Recognition that the society may face a period of lowered expectations after a long period of upward mobility will be a painful experience, but it is certainly not the moral equivalent of war. And, besides, we have time to take positive actions to avert the most serious consequences. When we consider alternate energy sources, the possibilities are almost endless: coal, oil shale, tar sands, solar, fission, fusion, wind, tides, biomass, etc. Actually, the list is endless because new possibilities are continually being proposed. Of these possibilities, coal uniquely stands out as an attractive substitute for petroleum. Coal can be, and is, burned to generate electricity and provide heat. It can be liquefied to supplement the liquid fuels from petroleum, and it can be gasified for use as synthetic natural gas. Unlike exotic alternate energy such as solar and fusion, coal has successfully been used commercially to produce synthetic fuels. But, the technology does need to be refined and modernized. Thus, coal's role is not to be "America's Ace in the Hole," but to bridge the transition from primary dependence on petroleum for energy to the utopia of renewable sources of energy. But don't be mislead by the prophets--those renewable sources of energy are going to be very, very expensive when they are invented.

"UHE Peixe Angical is a 452 MW hydroelectric power plant located on the Tocantins River in Tocantins, Brazil. In 1999, geologists began feasibility studies to estimate the river’s hydroelectric potential, and the decision was made to proceed with the construction of a power plant. In 2002, after extensive investigation, the studies indicated geological homogeneity at the site for the dam, except for an anomaly detected on the left margin, and construction began on the $1.2 billion project.As the work began, the complex ground conditions presented several serious difficulties. The solution was unlike any undertaken before in Brazil— a 100-m-long secant cutoff wall, with 76 1.8-m-diameter piles of up to 78 m deep. All were placed in a six-month period.In the preparation for the detailed construction plans, further studies in the area of the anomaly better defined the geology so that a treatment program could be developed. The feasibility study had detected silicified rock with high permeability in one area, and an injection curtain was designed with five injection lines. In the other area with an anomaly, further investigation revealed a permeable marble formation that was 50 m thick. Here, a specific injection program with three injection lines was developed.The injections started in February 2005 in the marble formation area. By July of that year, only the primary and secondary holes were drilled from the three lines, resulting in a space between injections of 1.50 m. By the end of July, the drilling was halted. The contractor had identified a thick area of heterogeneous material below the transition zone that was characterized by a mixture of soil, fractured rock and hard fractured rock. The anomalies were detected while drilling, and both the general contractor and the designer concluded that the phenomenon of “piping” was taking place.Constructing a positive cutoff wall became a priority."

This, report presents correlative data on ash and sulfur forms for Pittsburgh seam coal from Greene County, Pa. Prediction equations were developed for sulfur form distributions and washability characteristics. The equations developed were evaluated with an independent set of exploration core samples. It was demonstrated-that both sulfur distributions and washability characteristic's can be predicted from exploration core data ahead of mining. This information can improve the efficiency of selective mining techniques for the production of a uniform metallurgical coal product.
